Emergence ‘Young Directors’ Award for 16-25s Youth Theatre Arts Scotland (YTAS), the Saltire Society, and the Traverse Theatre have joined forces to offer a £2,500 award to enable one promising young theatre director to further their career and stage a short production at the innovative Chrysalis festival this November. The winning director’s performance will be hosted as part of the YTAS and the Traverse Theatre’s Emergence platform at Chrysalis festival 2017 which will take place from Friday 17 – Sunday 19 November. Applicants for the Emergence ‘Young Directors’ Award must be aged 16 to 25. Directors working in collaboration with young people have the opportunity to present a short performance in the early stages of growth. YTAS is looking for groups who are making experimental, risk-taking work and attempting to push the art form of youth theatre. The £2,500 Emergence ‘Young Directors’ Award includes a production and travel budget, production and marketing support, specialist training in August 2017, November 2017 and March 2018, and career mentoring and guidance from industry experts. The winner will also benefit from free YTAS membership and attendance at networking events. In selecting the winner of the Emergence ‘Young Directors’ Award, the judges will be looking for a young director who demonstrates a good awareness of their potential and the ambition to create exciting contemporary theatre productions with other young people.

How to apply Applicants for the Emergence ‘Young Directors’ Award must be aged 16 to 25. Please complete the form on the following pages and submit it by email to info@ytas.org.uk no later than 5pm on Wednesday 19 July 2017. ‘Emergence’ is a term used in philosophy, science and art to mean a process whereby larger ideas arise from small or everyday actions. Examples of systems which ‘emerge’ in this way include; snowflakes, ant colonies and social networks.


Emergence Guidelines The guidelines below are for directors and groups interested in their work being considered for presentation as part of the Chrysalis festival’s ‘Emergence’ platform.  Performance participants in the scratch work should be aged 14-25 and part of an identifiable youth theatre group.  The work presented must be new and in development.  The scratch work presented must be under 20 minutes in length. N.B. If your group does not fully meet these guidelines but your idea matches the aims and criteria for the Emergence platform and the Chrysalis festival, we would still welcome an application and further discussion about your work. Please feel free to call and discuss it with a member of the YTAS team!

Background on the Chrysalis festival The Chrysalis festival is staged in partnership with the Traverse Theatre, Edinburgh and will take place on Friday 17 – Sunday 19 November 2017. Chrysalis presents ambitious performances by young theatre-makers.It showcases emerging talent, sparks critical debate and challenges perceptions of youth theatre. The festival is the only platform of its kind in Scotland and offers a new experience for audiences new to youth theatre arts. The festival aims to:    

Positively enhance the public perception of creative work by young people Attract new audiences to youth theatre arts Inspire and raise the aspirations of Scotland's youth arts sector Stimulate critical discussion
