Now in its 6th year running SKILL UP has grown to become one of Scotland’s largest arts training conferences offering a unique weekend of professional development. As an open access event for anyone engaging in performing arts with young people, SKILL UP endeavours to provide quality training that appeals to all levels of expertise and is therefore designed to cater for; theatre practitioners, teachers, arts workers and students.

SKILL UP 2010 offers delegates the opportunity to engage in three workshops delivered by our guest facilitation team who this year include: SECOND WAVE CENTRE FOR YOUTH ARTS exist to develop youth-centred theatre and collaborative performance work by young artists. Associate Director, Talmud Bah, has a multi-disciplinary approach to working creatively with marginalized young men, including drama, lyrics, movement and capoeira. Second Wave has a successful track record of nurturing young artists. Recent graduates include Shingai Shoniwa and Dan Smith, from the chart-topping band The Noisettes POORBOY create stories for spaces, reinventing familiar landscapes and unlocking hidden spaces as they take their audiences on a journey peopled with vivid characters and lasting associations in an experience that is part performance, part experience and always unexpected. Their Youth strand is called RED. RED involves everyone from the very beginning of the process with Poorboy specialists working closely together with groups to create opportunities for children and young people. MARCUS ROMER is Artistic Director of Pilot Theatre based at York Theatre Royal who tour nationally and internationally. His adaptation of Looking for JJ by Anne Cassidy won the TMA award for best production for young people in 2008 and his award winning production of Lord of the Flies performed over 950 shows. BJØRN RAVN CARLSEN is a Stage Director and Leader of the Youth Theatre at Rogaland Theatre in Stavanger, Norway. He has been working there since 1990 and took over as leader In 2002. Educated at the university in Stavanger and the Norwegian Theatre School, Bjørn is on the board for Norway’s version of NT New Connections. SKILL UP is delighted to have Bjorn this year, having been postponed from 2009.
PADDY CUNNEEN is a theatre director, playwright and composer and is an associate director of Cheek by Jowl Company. Credits for his music work run to some 250 productions for theatres all over the world. Credits for his work as a director are also wide-ranging and numerous as are his music credits for work on Broadway. Awards include the Christopher Whelen Award for Music in Theatre, a Critics Award for Theatre in Scotland and the Music Industry Award for Best Cast Album for the Donmar Warehouse production of Company. He composes for radio, TV and film, and was BAFTA nominated for his recent score for the Channel 4 film Boy A. In addition he runs “The Sirens Of Titan” choir, commissioning new works from Scottish based composers and writers. GARY GARDINER is a performer, director and facilitator working in contemporary theatre, education and community contexts. He is the co-founder and Artistic Director of Off The Rails Contemporary Arts where he programmed workshop and performance opportunities for local and national artists working within Cumbria. He also works as an arts consultant developing arts-education practice within schools and community settings. Gary is an advisor and assessor for the nationally accredited Arts Award and now works as the Senior Tutor and Producer of Dramaworks at the RSAMD. Workshop titles and content will be forwarded on booking. Please note that the above programme is subject to change

TRAVEL AND ACCOMMODATION Eden Court theatre is situated on Bishops Road on the banks of the River Ness and is within easy walking distance from the centre of town. Inverness is served by station and bus depot.

HIGHLAND TRAVEL / ACCOMMODATION GRANTS SKILL UP 10 has an exclusive fund available to help support the costs of travel and / or accommodation for Highland based practitioners.
