Foreword Crafting is part of human history and a form of art. From clay pots and baskets to strings of stones and bones used as necklaces, our ancestors used crafting to decorate. Status within a community was symbolized by certain feathers or beadwork. The same can be said today, as we use crafts and fashion to fill our homes. From expensive tapestries to expensive clothing and jewelry, all are a form of crafting. This is an opportunity for you to learn how to decorate your home, clothing and everything you can imagine with beautiful crafts of your own. The bow is a symbol of beauty and status in decoration. In fact, the definition of a bow is: a decorative interlacing of ribbons. Ribbons were once quite expensive in the past and dependent upon which materials you use, still are quite pricey. The fashion industry, crafting industry and accessory industry still use bows in many of their fanciest pieces. Bows are a treasure to have because they are so versatile in their uses. They can be worn daily or on special occasions. They can be used as decorations for your home or for a gift. The possibilities are endless and I hope that your imagination runs wild with new ways to use bows in your lives.

Introduction/Welcome Thank you, for crafting with Bowdabra products! I would like to show you how to create some beautiful bows. I have always enjoyed seeing little girls with bows in their hair, dresses and socks. I think it’s precious! I also enjoy seeing an elegantly wrapped presents with a gorgeous bow on the box. I decided to make my own bows to put on gift baskets for friends and family. Once I began making my own bows, I saw that there were so many ways to use them. Sometimes making the bows perfectly was difficult and I wanted something that allowed me to make bows more easily. I also wanted to create bows that looked the same as the one I made before it. I created the Bowdabra, which allowed me to be creative and accurate on each bow. I want to share with you how you can make different types of bows and styles. The variations used will give you plenty of opportunity to be creative. I always encourage any new ideas to be shared with us at Bowdabra and submit a photo. We like to hear success stories from our products. Once you begin making bows for crafts or presents for friends, you may consider selling them. You will have everything you need in the kit to make bows as a hobby or as a business. I want to show you how you can make your own great gifts and enjoy doing it.

“Ribbons were so identified with luxury that, during the sixteenth century, the English Parliament tried to make the wearing of ribbons a right of only the nobility.” – Gillian S. Holmes

The Joy of Crafting Everywhere you turn there are new styles or accessories being worn. The outfits we wear usually have detail added to catch your eye. Adding designs onto an outfit to match the bags we carry or onto the bag directly create a sense of fashion. Placing small or large embellishments always gives character and beauty to any piece. Even the shoes we wear have the ability to be improved upon to create a great accent to any outfit. There is something about a beautiful bow that brings out elegance in fashion. The cost of adding a few accessories or the outfit itself are very costly and often don’t have the exact color or size you imagined. Have you ever found the perfect jacket and it had one thing that you wished you could change? Sometimes you don’t get exactly what you want when you purchase from a store. Being able to take an idea or use exactly what you want to accentuate a great headband or your pet’s collar is fun! Using your creative side will give you ideas for new ways to use accessories. Use your imagination! It feels good to make something that you thought of and made yourself. It will be a great feeling to be able to personalize gifts. You can offer gifts that reflect your personality. You will be able to begin customizing your own home. Even your own hats for the races! If you have an idea, you can make it a reality. Offer your talent to make someone something nice. The best part is the appreciation you will receive from those around you that you share your talent. Don’t forget that gifts aren’t only for humans. Pets have their accessories and outfits now, too! One of my most favorite things to do when I make my crafts is to personalize each item. I like to get to know what my clients enjoy the most, so I can add that special touch to the bows and baskets I make for them. It makes the biggest difference in the impression that I make and repeat clients when I add something that reflects their style. Often, I like to use my own ideas to surprise my clients and make my crafts and bows unique. I enjoy having a specialized business that I can share with those around me. It makes my days very enjoyable and it show in my work. Don’t be afraid to make your crafts unique and add your own special spark! Find out what your friends, family or clients like and create a bow just for them! Perhaps your daughter likes basketball; you can find a ribbon with basketballs on it and put it on a hair tie or a gift. If you have a client who is into seashells or the beach, you can add seashells to the bows you make for their gift! There are so many ways that you can personalize your bows and add that final touch to your crafts that show the work you put into each one. Even if Bowdabra helps you make bows faster and easier, the detail in each bow you personalize will be sure to show your thoughtfulness! Crafting is a great way to bond with your loved ones. Crafting can be as relaxing or as exciting as you want it to be! Look around you and see where you can add a personal touch. Think about a beautiful wreath for the door or a beautiful bow on a center piece or back of a chair. The possibilities are endless and the same idea applies to great gifts. I will show you how to make crafting you new or favorite hobby. Using Bowdabra for any craft will bring that final touch of elegance and beauty.

The Beauty of Bows Bows make everything more beautiful! Babies seem to smile brighter with a beautiful bow on their headband! The car given for a Sweet Sixteen present always has a gorgeous bow tied to the roof in all the movies. A bow is a finishing touch and shows effort. A gift without a bow seems incomplete or not as flattering when presented with one. The great part about bows is that they can be unisex and fit any gift. The upcoming pictures are some of my creations and some are from actual Bowdabra users who have submitted photos of their work. These are great to see before you begin, as you will become familiar with what types of bows there are and what is your favorite. You may also get some great ideas for your crafts. I started using ribbons in my crafts as early as I can remember. It wasn’t until I wanted to create my own bows that I really became interested in the different types of ribbon. Choosing your ribbon for your projects is my favorite part of making the bow! The colors and textures bring your mind into action and even some new ideas will begin to form when you’re picking out your favorites. Ribbons are very luxurious to touch and choosing the different types will be a great time spent together. Let your imagination take over as you and your family begin choosing which to use in the upcoming projects I present to you. Did you know that during the Victorian Era accessories from gloves to bonnets had a bow or a ribbon? Even men wore ribbons! Ribbon was often used as a gift or for use in decorating hair, furniture or linens. The status associated with ribbon and bows were the main reason that many would make a business of creating them for the wealthy to purchase.

“During the Napoleonic Wars early in the nineteenth century, the ribbon industry suffered a major decline because skilled weavers from England and Western Europe were recruited for military service. With the supply restricted, the demand for ribbon was even greater, and ribbons were a popular cargo for smugglers.” - Gillian S. Holmes

During the Victorian Era ribbons and bows could be found on dresses, undergarments, coats, ladies hats and baby clothes. Once synthetic and paper fibers were used to make ribbon, ribbon became as commonly used as most fabrics. Ribbon used today still symbolizes beauty and fashion. Ribbon is and will always be eye-catching and a beautiful addition to any outfit, wreath, letter or craft. Many types of ribbon today are colorful, shrink resistant, and able to be washed or dry cleaned. This makes ribbons and bows much easier to use!

Whimsical Flower Bows Materials Needed: • Bowdabra

• Tissue paper in color of choice

• Bowdabra Wire

• Rhinestones or other decorative element

Bring a bit of romance and nature into your home as you add these Whimsical Flower Bows to your wall décor or large vase. These look great in any room as they soften the mood and bring the outside to the inside. You can almost hear the wind and the birds chirping!

80

Step 1: Slice your tissue paper into roughly 3 inch wide strips. This size

can vary and determines how large your piece will be. I created 3 inch by about 12 inch long strips. (**tip, if your tissue paper comes folded in a long fold it may be easier to leave them folded and cut that way!)

Step 2: Set aside tissue paper and cut about a 12 inch piece of Bowdabra

wire (the size may vary depending on your needs.) Fold wire in half, place wire in the Bowdabra (see photo) and tuck loose ends underneath. Whatever size you make your wire it will be helpful if it can be tucked under once folded in half.

Step 3: Use roughly 3 pieces of your pre-cut tissue paper and carefully

slide into the Bowdabra. Be very gentle to prevent tearing. Use the wand tool that comes with the bow maker to push the tissue paper down

Step 4: Once finished, pull up both sides of the wire. One side will be a loop, the other two loose ends. Pull the two loose ends through the loop and carefully pull up your piece. Gently pull apart the two loose ends as you lift, pull around your piece and tie in a double knot. (You may need to give it a tug to make it nice and tight)

Step 5: That’s all there is to it! I carefully fluffed the flower with my

fingers and hot glued a rhinestone in the center. The photo shows them glued onto a Manzanita tree but these can be used for favors, napkin rings, hair accessories, bouquets, and so much more! Enjoy!

No Sew Rag Baby Bow M at e r i a l s N e e d e d : • Bowdabra

• Scissors

• Bowdabra Bow Wire

• Several strips of cloth

This is a great and traditional bow! The No Sew Rag Baby Bow is a wonderful way to use your fabric and decorate your gifts, baby hair bows and baby rooms. The soft fabric and multiple colors are great for unisex decorations!

106

BAby & big girls Step 1: To begin cut strips of fabric. I cut fabric strips 1” wide and 5”

long. You can easily cut the strips by hand and to prevent fraying you can also use sheering scissors to cut the fabric. I love the vintage look of the fabric fraying so I left it with just the straight cut. You also can add a nofray blocker to the fabric once it is cut if you would prefer. Step 2: Place 24” of Bowdabra Bow Wire folded in half into the center of

the Bowdabra. The Bowdabra Bow Wire is the key to this bow. You need the wire to pull the fabric really tightly and I highly recommend using the wire to hold your bow together. Step 3: Place your fabric strips into the center of the Bowdabra. Try to

keep each strip on center.

Step 4: Continue adding fabric strips until you are over halfway up the Bowdabra towers.

Step 5: Scrunch the fabric strips down with the Bowdabra Wand.

Step 6: Taking your Bowdabra Bow Wire thread the wire tails through

the loop that was formed when you folded the wire in half, at the beginning.

Step 7: Pull the wire tightly. The wire needs to be pulled extra tight to push all the fabric down and keep it all securely in place.

Step 8: Take the rag bow out of the Bowdabra. Bring the wire around

to back of the bow, fluff the bow a bit and separate fabric from each other. Then tightly tie the Bowdabra Bow Wire to the back of the bow.

Helpful Hints: You can starch the bow if you would like to add stiffness. If you do starch it I recommend starching the bow and then hanging it upside so that the fabric falls forward and to the center.

Crafting with Kids There are quite a few crafts that will enable you and your child to get creative and have the opportunity to share your creation with friends. The bows that you will be able to make with your kids will be worthy of placing on any gift. Spending time with your young child or your teenager making their own creations will make for great memories. Bowdabra crafts are a great way to get your kids involved in crafting and creating their own bows. This is an inexpensive way to entertain and enjoy family time. Crafting can also be used as a time to help teach children. In fact, we feel that Crafting can be healthy for a child’s self-esteem and development so much that a portion of every purchase goes to support Crafter’s For Kids. Crafter’s For Kids is a non-profit organization designed to get parents and children to spend more time with each other. The goal is to provide inexpensive ways to make great projects, gifts or décor for the home. Crafter’s For Kids is a great place to get or submit any ideas that cost under $5 and are made in 5 minutes. Get your child started in a fun project that will not only help a great charity, but will enable a child to focus. You can go online and see what the new creation of the month is by going to craftersforkids.com (C4K) and click on Sandy Sandler to see some great ideas. Crafting with and for children creates a sense of accomplishment and an opportunity to bond for a lifetime. When your child focuses and creates something for themselves, it will improve their confidence and attention to detail. These are great traits to have and develop! Get your child involved early in making crafts with beautiful hand-made bows. The memories they have will be warm and sweet. They want to share the same moments with their kids and grandchildren. When you teach your child to do something it becomes embedded within them. They will know that they have the ability to create. Sharing their knowledge and crafts with their friends will be an activity that everyone can enjoy! It is also a great way for your child and their friends to spend time at birthday parties, sleepovers and play dates. Getting your child involved is the best way to peak their interests and creativity. Some great ideas include letting your child pick out what type of bow they would like to make and the color of ribbon. I like to choose the actual ribbon type because it allows me to control the costs, while the child is able to choose their colors. It is a great opportunity to get creative and save money. Two very important lessons for our kids as they grow! *Note: Try to let your child be as creative as they want with the color selection. Unless you are specific about the colors that you want for a gift, then you should help direct their choices. Ie) if your two-year old wants pink for her older brother’s baseball frame, you may want to direct her to a color your son would prefer or from the team. A great way to get your kids involved is: ???????????? Now that you have an idea of how to get children involved to be your “assistants” you can begin some great creations and perhaps a small business for you and your child.

Tie It All Together I hope that you have enjoyed the new ideas that we have for you and are ready to make some additions to your home. Crafting can be one of the most relaxing or exciting activity. Author Bio Sandy Sandler is often spotlighted in craft segments on local and national TV, and writes craft articles for several media outlets. It is her passion to bring crafting to the family as a way of improving relationships with kid’s, to teach new skills and to foster family fun. Sandy is the owner of several craft companies and first got started by making customized gifts for friends and family. Once her gifts were being inquired about and requested regularly, she began to make gift baskets. Sandy had such a great way of creating beautiful baskets that many began to ask for her to make gifts for their family and friends. Once Sandy began putting larger baskets together for corporate clients, she wanted to find an inexpensive way to add detail. Sandy is a crafting expert and is always looking for new designs from those that use her product. She began using hand-made bows for her baskets and gifts. The time spent on each bow to get it perfect every time is what led to the creation of the Bowdabra! Sandy created the top-selling Bowdabra® because she was having a hard time training people to hand-tie professional-looking bows. She wasn’t alone. When she attended gift and craft trade shows, Sandy recognized that the bow-tying workshops always drew crowds. However, despite the demonstrators’ best efforts, retailers and crafters were still unable to create professional bows on their own. After a great deal of research, Sandy contracted with a design engineer and began working on the Bowdabra®. When it was finished, she had an inexpensive “goof-proof ” bow-maker that made a wide range of professional-looking bows. With the help of an angel investor, production began on the Bowdabra® and Sandy prepared to begin presenting it to retailers. American retailers turned down the Bowdabra® in favor of competitors’ bow makers, even though they admitted that they were inferior. Frustrated with the paltry response by the U.S. market, Sandy headed overseas to market the product she so believed in. The Bowdabra® began to sell container loads in Europe, Brazil, and Australia. Sandy decided it was time to bring the product back state side and created HPA Enterprises, inc. In December of 1998, the Bowdabra® debuted on QVC, selling out 5,000 units in less than 10 minutes. Over time, QVC reached $2.5 million in retail sales of the Bowdabra. Now, the Bowdabra® can be found in craft retailers all over the country, with sales and customer loyalty continuing to rise. Earning her degree in Psychology from the University of Southern California and a MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management, Sandy started her career as a product marketer in 1989, when she introduced the “Klika” to the U.S. market. Over 3 million Klikas sold in just nine months. Sandy and her companies are based in Las Vegas, Nevada, where Sandy shares a home with her beloved Husky, Nouvelle. In addition to marketing and performing demonstrations of her bow-making

tool, Sandy is active in the community. Sandy is committed to doing everything she can to help those less fortunate, through volunteering and with her non-profit Crafters 4 Kids. It is a firm belief of Sandy that quality time is a necessary activity for a healthy family and in turn, a healthier community. Sandy believes that children deserve a childhood filled with beautiful bows and crafts made by their own hands. We hope you feel the same way and will share your creations with those in your neighborhood, as well.
