Mazak Puts the Strategy in Strategic Workforce Development

Each month 3 to 4.5 million employees quit their jobs, which costs their employers about 33% of the worker’s annual salary to replace them. Fortunately, the bulk of the reasons for such employee turnover is preventable when companies take a truly strategic approach to their workforce development programs. In taking just such an approach here at Mazak, we revamped our workforce development program by first focusing on some key aspects. Those included job descriptions, compensation and business vulnerabilities along with our efforts in recruitment and retention.

Related accessory products to be seen will include; LK’s new SLK20 blue light line laser scanner; a new LK surface roughness probe; and a new LK FREEDOM V2 measuring arm with rotary indexing table. well as any necessary training, then focus on the individual employee. When doing so, the goal is to also identify future potential leaders within company.

Part of our planning was not only to look at succession, but also to realize business vulnerabilities per each department. These can include things like age, lack of talent and how to overcome them. This then leads to what actions have already been taken, if any, and what actions will be planned and executed.

Not taking a strategic approach is like plugging a hole in a dam as opposed to evaluating the whole dam to find out why the hole developed and how to prevent others from developing. You have to ask where are the weaknesses and where do we need to reinforce.

Our strategy, when it came to compensation, was simple and straight forward. We wanted compensation packages that were competitive and would attract new talent as well, and we wanted to position Mazak as a company that doesn’t just offer a job, it offers a career. requisitions – some were promotional opportunities – as result of our recruitment and retention efforts as well as the rest of our strategic workforce development plan.

During Covid, we didn’t lay off any employees, but we also didn’t hire a new employees. Then business picked up fast with surging customer demand. So we had to go into a heavy recruiting mode to gain the manpower to keep pace. We successfully got the workforce to a level that was needed through internal promotions and new hires, many of which included military veterans. CompactFootprint Soware

A Message From Broc Bryson Representing the Northern Utah National Tooling & Machining Association (NUNTMA)

Unless you’ve been living under a rock – and you haven’t been – you are fully aware of the need to recruit, train and retain more people in the machining industry. The NUNTMA exists for a number of reasons but none are even close to the importance of the topic of workforce development.

So now to the ask. NUNTMA is working towards supporting the Skills USA competition for the State of Utah on a much larger scale. NUNTMA will support the competition with all of the many aspects connected to it (Developing the Test, Working with the Schools, Providing Judges, etc.). As a supplier community they are asking if we can organize some serious prizes that will get the attention of the young people and their instructors. The initial thought is a nice tool box with all of the tools necessary to be a machinist for the 3 winning team members in the College level competition. We will want to have smaller prizes for the High School competition but prizes that will be motivating for the students and instructors. Do you have an idea of how your company could support this effort with either products or funds? As we embark on this journey there really is nothing off the table. The better we can make this event and the more attention we can draw to it the more impact that can be had – which is of course the goal.

Thank you in advance for considering this yet one more ask. If you do think that you could support this effort please reach out to me directly and I can help you get involved.

Thanks for your continued support! Broc Bryson – Business Team Leader - Utah

Are You Fully Leveraging Resources Offered By the Idaho Manufacturing Alliance?

Are you an Idaho-based product company/manufacturer that is poised for growth, but hampered by an equipment problem, supply chain issue, or labor shortages? There aren’t

As product companies/ manufacturers work to find answers to new business and economic challenges, the Idaho Manufacturing Alliance continues to offer resources, connections, and support. “No one has all the answers,” says Johnson. Her advice? “Leverage the knowledge that members of the manufacturing community can offer. Your business — and life — will be richer for it!”

Micron To Build ‘Mega Fab’ In Us. Will It Be In Idaho? Here’s What The Company Says

When Congress passed the CHIPS and Science Act, authorizing subsidies for the semiconductor industry, it raised a big question for one of Boise’s largest employers. Will the subsidies entice Micron Technology Inc. to expand near its headquarters in Idaho? Or will it go elsewhere in the U.S., perhaps to the Texas capitol’s booming tech hub?

The Idaho Manufacturing Alliance (IMA) is a membership organization focused on knowledge sharing, collaboration, and advocacy to cultivate an environment that creates benefits for the manufacturing industry and community as a whole.

With passion for the manufacturing world in Idaho, IMA supports and connects manufacturers by building awareness and sharing knowledge throughout their camaraderie of members. They help to provide tangible and economic resources and are dedicated to authenticity, integrity, and service. Rob Beard, senior vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary at Micron, told the Idaho Statesman on a Zoom call that the memory-making company was considering locations in several states across the country, not just Idaho. “What we would like to build in the United States is a massive manufacturing facility,” Beard said.
