is a small former copper-mining town rich in history. LEi Machining, based in a designated HUBZone, offers its mining customers CNC turning and milling, wire EDM, laser engraving, as well as industrial repair and fabrication. With its FFL (Federal Firearms License), the company also manufactures firearms. For those unfamiliar with the term HUBZone, it is a United States Small Business Administration (SBA) program for small companies that operate and employ people in Historically Under-utilized Business Zones, including rural areas like Miami, Arizona, with a goal of awarding at least 3% of federal contract dollars to HUBZone-certified companies each year. LEI purchased its first Haas machine in 1994 and today owns several. Their latest acquisition, a Haas UMC 500, is the company’s entrée into 5 axis machining, and the purchase was made in part because LEi wants to reduce its dependence on employees. Elvin Sr says, “5-axis machining is an effective means to reduce setups and increase accuracy for multi-sided and complex parts. The Haas UMC-500 Series Universal Machining Center will be perfect for both 3+2 machining and simultaneous 5-axis machining of smaller parts.”

They just don’t want to come up from Phoenix to live.” Elvin Sr says, “Recently, I saw the article in the A2Z Manufacturing magazine on Gateway Community College, and I was intrigued with how progressive they were with their equipment and training programs.” Elvin Sr. made an appointment with Dave, and the two met in Phoenix.

Dave Zamora, (pictured with Elvin Jr and Sr), lead faculty for the Center for Industrial Technology (CIT) at Gateway’s Washington Campus, said, “Gateway is known for its hands-on training at our facility, but we have also provided virtual (remote) training as well as onsite training at the customer’s facility. Allied Tool & Die Changes Its Name to ATD Precision Manufacturing LLC

Epic Finance – Focusing on the Buyer AND Seller

Epic Finance (Golden, CO) is taking a modern approach to the machine tool financing industry. Led by Chris Frans, CLFP (President), Epic’s goal is to provide the most optimal customer service to both the customer and the distributor or OEM that is selling the equipment, all while providing aggressively low rates. ATD Precision Manufacturing LLC is the new name for Allied Tool & Die Co., LLC. The company was founded 72 years ago by the Jordan family and over the decades has transitioned from making tools, dies, and jigs to the production of components and small assemblies. A name change has been debated internally for many years. Should we keep the name known for decades or change it because it no longer communicates what we do?

Aerospace, Defense Cos. Strike $4.7b Deal Melbourne, Florida-based L3Harris Technologies Inc. will pay $4.7 billion to buy Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings Inc. off of public markets, reports Isabel Sami of L.A. Business First. By acquiring the El Segundo, California-based company, L3Harris would secure a stronger foothold in the aerospace and defense sector. But L3Harris wouldn’t be the first company to try; Lockheed Martin tried to buy Aerojet for $4.4 billion in a deal meant to close earlier this year, but the Federal Trade Commission sued to block the deal in January. The Lockheed deal would have given the company the ability to deny competitors components needed to build competing rockets,

Industrial Production Returns to Growth After February’s Storms Subside The Federal Reserve reported that industrial production in March rose 1.4%, returning to growth after an unseasonably stormy February knocked it down 2.6%. The report shows total industrial production rose 2.5% at an annualized rate during the first quarter of 2021 despite the losses endured in February by manufacturing, mining, and utilities companies.
