Whether it’s the makers’ distinctive style, the character of the piece, the inspiration behind its origins, there’s always more to tell than meets the eye. Every product has a story...

our VA L U E S

A passion for travel and culture underpins Nkuku, along with a determination to make a positive impact on the world. It was over fourteen years ago that we (Ali and Alex) set out on what was to become a life-changing adventure, travelling the world and coming across talented craftspeople and their beautiful work along the way. It inspired us to move out of London and set up our own business in Devon, where we started working with artisans throughout the world, supporting and celebrating their skills by bringing their products to a wider audience.

Ethical

We borrowed the name ‘Nkuku’ from a hut in Zambia and wrote our business plan on the cover of a paper back. Our first order was for exquisite leather journals that we still sell today. Our team and products may have grown, but we still have the same hands-on approach, meeting and working with all our artisans personally. We believe this is our point of difference and it’s how we know that every product has a story to tell…

We think that ethical business is good business, that’s why we work to make sure that all the people involved in Nkuku, from producers to employees treat each other fairly and with respect.

Eco Friendly We care about the environment and this has an impact on how we go about our work. We work with natural and recycled materials through sustainable methods of production and this shapes our collections.

Handmade We want to make sure that age-old traditions are handed onto future generations. This is one of the reasons why handmade products create the core of our business. The relationship between an artisan and a beautiful handmade piece creates a story and makes each product not a mass market item, but an individually crafted piece.

our A RT I S A N S The characters and personalities of the artisans we work with are visible in the pieces they make, their experience and knowledge adds to the beauty of our collections. It is easy to overlook the time and effort invested in a handmade product but if you pause for a moment and absorb the textures and details left by the maker, a sense of awe transpires.

Throughout our travels we are constantly inspired and captivated by the traditional skills and techniques that we see. It is these skills that really motivated us to set up Nkuku, allowing us to continue exploring, learning and discovering.

our M AT E R I A L S The materials we work with shape our collections and play a key part in our look and values. We choose to work with natural, recycled and reclaimed materials through sustainable methods of production. We gather the waste left over from other industries including cotton from discarded t-shirts to make paper, as well as recycled metals and glass.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We see the beauty in natural materials, from the grain and character of untreated wood to the golden hues of eco-friendly jute.â&#x20AC;?

Recycling allows us to create new and beautiful products with less impact on the environment. It is important that the natural character shows through in our collections and we celebrate subtle imperfections.

BEAUTY IN SIMPLICITY

Our journals and albums will always be an important part of our collection; they were the first product we ever made and symbolise so much about Nkuku. The collection includes beautiful leather journals with wrap around leather ties. Our rustic journals are handmade from leather by a cooperative of 40 families using traditional methods. The leather is dyed using natural tree bark and vegetable extract.

Our new raw cotton journals take pleasure in paper to a new level. Handmade from recycled cotton rags using ancient paper-making skills, they are a celebration of the beauty in simplicity. Incredible organic texture - one for artists, writers and creatives. As they are not made using wood pulp, they are tree-free too.
