A Parkland College Student-Produced Publication 2400 W. Bradley Ave. | Champaign, Il. 61821

From its start in 1981, iMAGES has continued to improve to include the best that Parkland College has to offer. iMAGES was first supported by Joe Harris, then chair of the Department of Humanities. After several editors and an extended hiatus, theProspectus has taken over the production and promotion of the magazine and has worked with a small team to produce a high quality magazine. iMAGES encourages students to submit their visual arts, graphic design, poetry, fiction and non-fiction work for review and publication in this magazine. The iMAGES team is excited to present another year of great art and design from Parkland’s best and most creative. Special thanks go out to the Office of Student Life Activities Program, who make the production of the magazine possible through their continued financial support. Thanks also goes out to the faculty of the Department of Fine Arts and Department of Humanities, who encourage students to submit work. We would like to specifically thank Director Tom Caulfield and Activities Program Manager Chaya Sandler for their continued support of iMAGES Magazine. Art & Design Director Billi Jo Hart Editors: Tim Anderson Humna Sharif Adam Vilmin Kelly Youngblood

iMAGES Guidelines: Submissions are accepted by students registered during the 2014-2015 academic year. Interested students may submit a maximum of (6) works. Questions? Email: images@parkland.edu.

Snow White’s Revenge

Shooting in the snow is never easy but can be very rewarding. My inspiration came from two different t.v. shows Once Upon A Time and Merlin. I wanted to capture the purity of the snow while adding a dark fabric to darken the image. Shania Sears Photography

The morning, pale, drifts through the window of my new room. Grey walls never looked so inviting. So understanding. The morning, still, fills my lungs with a sense of calm. Memories never seemed so close. So precious. The morning, broken, absorbs the sound of the telephone. Distress never seemed so ready. So knowing. The morning, sad, brings tidings of her. 7 am never seemed so sobering. So honest.

A dark tidal wave Rushes across an otherwise Peaceful ocean My waters have rarely Ebbed past even the closest Rocks upon the shore I am scared of her hurricane I bunker down in the Stronghold of my seclusion She batters my windows Assaults my entrance Then the winds calm It’s the eye It’s her eye In the midst of it I am safe The debris settles She walks toward me Her white dress billows Our hands touch Only for an instant Her storm rages once again Her eye can no longer be seen A dark tidal wave recedes And my waters Become calm once again

As a boy, when curiosity overthrew me. I stole a spring-legged acrobat up quick from the ground, leveled it, Then condemned it upon an anthill. I watched as nature enacted, I, oblivious to my part, Captured by what is – Becoming what was – Now I, here, watching the blossoms melt steaming in the sun, Turn these greyed eyes from the future, For aspiration to a man healthy is reminiscence to a man sickly. I, here, transition, on an anthill of my own, Feeling mortality crawl it’s way around me, out me. Pondering, He who placed this Grasshopper, Me. For should I harbor ill will towards my transporter, When my mother’s creed cries Proud, Predestined, Preordained. Or weep at karma’s spinning wheel, The cookie, which crumbles reciprocal ways. The Watchmaker’s unequivocal gears left ticking, Stained stoic, finishing third, rusted. The lap of God, lemon field of wheat, Left waiting, waving. No, He, Thee – Omega, Alpha, All, Seems more a standing child oblivious, Stating, Excuse Me My Misgivings.

Here, sitting in silence, The hum of the heater my only friend awake, The pipes chatter rushed verses to one another. Breath, not my breath, fills the other room, While I, I sit and watch the snowfall. Behold, the eraser of sidewalks, Creator of the sea frothing white, Maker of men and artillery, The silence on a silent night, The patriarch of the seasons, The tester of roofs and of thickness of wool, Bringer of cold cruel fading breaths, Bringer of freshness, maintainer of flesh. Bender of branch and shaper of tree, Subject of many musings, thee, Fractions of billions and millions effulge, Here a whole, Softening the steps for my soles.

Right now as your eyes, sweet eyes, Meet with each these words, Know. That I am here with you. The silence you hear around you, Those interruptions of clanks and clatters, Those! There! Can’t you hear them? Listen – They are mine, and those they are yours. The grass that stretches its scents to me, The loaves of which my nose enjoys, free, Given here to me, While given here to you. See there out in front of you, Past our grass a ways? Not the broken dying table Dead its sitters, and singers, and meals. But behind, Yes! There! You see them! Those birches! Those sisters! White! Stretching out bent arms to us, An invitation to the Sky. Will you come, Here, and join me? Come and have at that which is Yours? I will sit and smile, And wait till you are ready, Even though, I know that you are.

We are the leaves upon the tree We grow weary and die Only to be born anew We prepare

We guard ourselves

We turn dark and brittle Then we are scattered We lose our way And all that we have known

We are filled with ice and pain We lay dormant

We bide our time until A familiar déjà vu washes over us The rain’s warmth thaws us We bud

We grow

Our green blood is replenished Someday the Mahogany Of our lives will cease to breath

Forever we will remain in the wind Never to return home again

Louis L’Amour layering the floor With old-dust smell and cowboy swagger; You, in your chair, cocked brow ready To deliver a glance to match your satire; Nicotine nails and a laugh gone rusty from always being out; Too-sweet coffee - the sneezing shout could never be as loud as all this hurting. The feeling of about-to-crumble swirling thin rainbow layers On top of the water of ‘I’m still living.’ But that’s always louder, isn’t it? Against the ‘I’ll miss you, for all, and for always’ Sometimes by a stretch, and sometimes by a sliver; after your death, life’s what you’re still giving So I’m still living.

To read poetry is to dig. To dig into to the soil, and into the self, into the self of soil and solids, To break earthy flesh and to dump it over head, deepening and entrenching. To dig into the universe dark and uncover the stars, that core ruby and molten that erupts and expels as laughter and blush amidst friendship and courtship and hardship, To open the doors of the building body and to walk inside, losing yourself among the halls and among the portraits that adorn them. To read poetry is to hear. To hear the songs of birches and bridges and cities and storms, To hear the songs of those songs still, sang from all corners around and from graves underneath, To hear as God densely sleeps in a cup of tea, milk, and honey, and To engorge on the whispers of life as the stream echoes and the clay canyon creeks. To read poetry is to honor. To honor thy self and thy spirit, thy comrade and foe, To gaze gaping towards bodies and stars while they lace and helix in dance, craving only to unravel once more, To let exist naked that which does and has and will, eternal, Before man ever stumbled upon it spilling a name.

This is yours This is yours I can’t carry it anymore This is yours You’re the one who slammed the door You act as if I’m the one in the wrong But these were your insecurities Not mine, all along I have this hurt and this ache I want to be done with this pain I’m placing this at your feet And I am walking away I’m not to blame For this breach of attachment You once told me you cared I believe at the time you meant it Now you can’t even look me in the eye How can you care one day And the next Not even try I wish you would tell me the truth I guess you don’t know how I was comfortable and trusted you But look at us now I’m still hurting for now Because of what you did I wish you could see my pain I wish you could feel it

I am forgiving you like dawn. A gray, dark and terrible like death, and the grass, tall and cold, give way in a pink burst buried low in me. You are still out there somewhere, and someday you might grab another girl’s hand and drag her, giggling, to the roof of an old theater. She may gasp for love of you, breathing hot stars that forget to hurt. I hope you learned how not to break her and that you can cradle trust, egg-shelled and beautiful.

This scribbled canopy both grey and quiet Laddered above rooftops pleated and chimneys stoned Great wooden capillaries on unseen lungs Breathing and swelling Shrinking, expelling. A blanket of wool cast over the landscape Has settled some places and bundled in others While sitting beside my window staring Does evoke a cry for summers. Come sun, come gold, come glistening, A lover’s hand lay tender on cheek When leaves cast down in dusky shadows A ballet performed on the streets. Sing out dragonfly softly That aria of the season, when tulip Lilac, chrysanthemum and orchid Expect no delay without good reason.
