Letter from the MWL President
To the Millions of Midwest League Fans: I am thrilled to begin my 4th season as Midwest League President. Each day I realize how lucky I am to have the privilege of working with our 16 teams who are the best in Minor League Baseball. We have consistently exceeded 4 million fans coming though Midwest League Park gates each season. Therefore, I have the luxury of welcoming our fans in a way which highlights the fact each of you are not only “1 in a million”, but 1 in 4 million!!! The success of the Midwest League does not happen by accident. Each time I visit the parks around the League I find smiling faces, families holding hands and laughing at the entertainment, and cheering the play on the field. This affordable opportunity each of our Clubs provide to our fans is done with a welcoming smile and a true desire to treat you all as valued guests. What makes me most proud is how our Clubs are excellent corporate citizens and each year either lead or are among the top 2 or 3 Leagues in Charitable Contributions of all of Minor League Baseball. In fact, more than a dollar per ticket goes back to worthy causes in each of our cities. For this philanthropy I thank our Clubs and fans. We had a great 2017 Championship Season with the Whitecaps maintaining the best record for a Minor League Team, the TinCaps fielding the youngest team in Minor League Baseball and making it to the final Championship Series, and our Astros affiliate Quad Cities River Bandits winning it all, just like the parent Club in Houston. So, saddle up, and get ready for another exciting season in the Midwest League; 2018 will be the best ever! A new set of players and teams will be thrilling our fans April through September. Don’t miss an opportunity to take in a Midwest League game, as you’ll experience a lifetime of memories. Play Ball!!! Sincerely, Richard A. Nussbaum, II, President

Midwest League All-Star Game
SHOWCASE OF
STARS The Midwest League All-Star Games returns to Lansing for the first time since 2002
by Jesse Goldberg-Strassler A baseball bat sits in the front office at Cooley Law School Stadium, its barrel marked not in scuff marks but in autographs. It dates to the 2002 Midwest League All-Star Game, the most recent midsummer classic held in Lansing. Here’s the signature of the catcher for the Quad City River Bandits, a Western Division All-Star reserve. There’s the autograph of the third baseman from the Dayton Dragons, an Eastern Division All-Star starter. Those two players were 19 years old in 2002. Sixteen years later, they are both still around, continuing to thrill fans in the Midwest. The Bandits’ catcher was Joe Mauer, then the reigning first overall draft choice, now a six-time American League All-Star and three-time batting champion for the Minnesota Twins. The Dragons’ third baseman was Edwin Encarnacion, now a three-time American League All-Star with the Toronto Blue Jays and coming off a 38-homer season with the Cleveland Indians.

allowing one run and striking out two – Clayton Kershaw. He went on to pitch in the Futures Game at the Major League All-Star Break, followed by a summer promotion to Double-A. He made his MLB debut 11 months after he pitched in the All-Star Game, striking out seven St. Louis Cardinals in six innings. Today Kershaw is the ace of the National League champion Los Angeles Dodgers, a seven-time N.L. All-Star, a three-time Cy Young Award-winner and the 2014 N.L. Most Valuable Player. He is now, arguably, the best pitcher in baseball.

This is the promise and potential of the summer showcase returning to Cooley Law School Stadium on Tuesday, June 19th: the 54th annual Midwest League All-Star Game presented by LAFCU. Today they are the best players in the minors – and soon they will be the best players in the majors.

Freeze-frame the moments. Kane County, IL – June 19th, 2007. The Eastern Division AllStars scored three runs in the third inning, breaking a 1-1 tie, and coasted to an easy 8-2 victory over the West. The win went to the 19-year-old lefty from the Great Lakes Loons who pitched the second inning,
Fort Wayne, IN – June 22nd, 2010. The Eastern Division scored three runs in the first inning and two in the second, on their way to dealing the West a 6-2 defeat. It was a quiet day for the Western Division’s cleanup hitter, an 18-yearold outfielder for the Cedar Rapids Kernels, who went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Don’t jump to conclusions about that performance – Mike Trout has become a superstar with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, reaching the Major League Baseball All-Star Game every year since 2012, winning two MLB All-Star Game MVP Awards, two American League MVP Awards and five Silver Sluggers. He is now, arguably, the best position player in baseball. Miguel Cabrera, Carlos Correa, Albert Pujols, Francisco Lindor, Johan Santana, Adam Dunn,

Adrian Gonzalez, Nelson Cruz, Shin-Soo Choo, Dee Gordon, Ender Inciarte, Justin Upton, Johnny Cueto, Prince Fielder, Carlos Gonzalez and more. All of them came through the Midwest League. All of them suited up as All-Stars.
In the Beginning The very first Midwest League All-Star Game was played at venerable Municipal Stadium – which is still around today, a ripe 86 years old, going by the name of Modern Woodmen Park and hosting Quad Cities River Bandits games in Davenport, Iowa. It was 1964. Rather than Eastern and Western Divisions, the Midwest League’s ten teams were divided into North and South squads. Before a crowd of 1,289, the South came away with a 6-3 win. There was no Midwest League All-Star Game in 1965. A new plan was unveiled entering 1966. Rather than pit the Midwest League’s best players against one another, the All-Stars were all placed on the same side opposing the best team in the league. The game was played in Appleton, Wisconsin, with the hometown Fox Cities Foxes battling the combined forces of the Burlington Bees, Cedar Rapids Cardinals, Clinton Pilots, Decatur Commodores, Dubuque Packers, Quad Cities Angels, Quincy Cubs, Waterloo

run on a Jason Conti single. (Conti ended up playing 182 games in the Major Leagues, collecting exactly 100 hits.)
The All-Stars fared better over the next 12 seasons, winning four of the next five contests, tying Wisconsin Rapids 1-1 in ten innings in 1972, losing to Wisconsin Rapids in 1973, and then triumphing again in four out of five seasons, through 1978. The attendance for the games never topped 2,400.
With such an impressive showing, it was no wonder that the All-Star Game came back to Michigan’s state capital just two years later. The crowd swelled to 10,234 – and the game breezed by in just two hours, nine minutes, as the Western Division tossed a one-hitter in a 4-0 win.
In 1979, the league decided to return to a North vs. South AllStar format, and an improved crowd of 3,427 flocked to Cedar Rapids to watch a 9-2 South romp. In 1980, a throng of 7,413 arrived in Davenport to see the North return the favor, 6-1. That remained the league’s largest Midsummer Classic crowd until 1995, when West Michigan drew 8,483 for a 7-5 East victory, an impressive showing – until the Lansing Lugnuts arrived on the scene.
In 2002, Lansing hosted its third All-Star Game. The attendance set a new record again, 10,334, and the East came out on top with a 6-3 triumph.
Rewrite the Record Book The Lugnuts, who shattered national records by drawing 500,000+ fans in their inaugural 1996 season, hosted their first Midwest League All-Star Game in 1997. An enormous gathering of 10,060 was treated to a classic. With the score tied at 5-5 in the bottom of the ninth, the Nuts’ Steve Medrano laced a triple and scored the winning
Nearly two decades later, Lansing’s 2002, 1999 and 1997 All-Star Games remain the top three best attended All-Star Games in Midwest League history.
Star of Stars The 1982 Midwest League AllStar Game was the first year in the league’s records that an AllStar Game Most Valuable Player was named. His name was Mark Grant, a 6-foot-2 righthander drafted tenth overall in 1981. The 18-year-old Grant went 16-5 with a 2.36 ERA for the 1982 Clinton Giants, tossing 12 complete games and four shutouts. He was in the Majors as a 20-year-old, beginning an eight-year MLB career with the San Francisco Giants, San Diego Padres, Atlanta Braves,

Seattle Mariners, Colorado Rockies and Houston Astros. After announcing his retirement in 1995, he joined the Padres’ broadcast booth, where he continues to serve as San Diego’s television analyst. The list of MWL All-Star Most Valuable Players since Grant is filled with interesting names. Rocket-armed Cubs prospect Shawon Dunston, the first overall pick in the 1982 draft, took home the honors in 1983. In 1992 the award went to Tyrone Horne, who never reached the Major Leagues – but did become the first professional player to hit for the home run cycle, crushing a solo
homer, a two-run shot, a threerun roundtripper and a grand slam in the same game while playing for Arkansas in 1998. In 2006, the All-Star Game Most Valuable Player was future MLB All-Star Jay Bruce, representing the Dayton Dragons, who went 3-for-5 with three runs, a double and a ninth-inning home run to lead the Eastern Division to an easy victory. Only one Lansing Lugnuts player has ever been named All-Star Game MVP, Keith Butler in 2003. Butler went 3-for-3 with three singles, the last one coming in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Eastern Division to a 5-4 walk-off win
at Fifth Third Ballpark in West Michigan.
Unforgettable The aforementioned 1999 and 2003 All-Star Game conclusions may have been dramatic, but it’s likely that the tensest finish to an MWL Midsummer Classic came in 2013 at Dayton’s Fifth Third Field. The game was tied at 5-5 entering the bottom of the ninth. With two outs and the bases loaded, the Lugnuts’ Dalton Pompey stepped to the plate. Unbeknownst to Pompey and the crowd, the two managers

eventual league MVP, scored two runs, drove in a third, and the Lugnut-led East All-Stars laughed their way to an 18-2 pasting of the West. In 2016 in Cedar Rapids, it looked like the Western Division had turned the tables. The West took an 8-1 lead in the third inning – but the East refused to give in. Down 10-7 in the ninth, South Bend’s Eloy Jimenez launched a game-tying threerun homer to center field. The Nuts’ Andrew Guillotte followed with a single to right, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored the go-ahead run on a single by Lake County’s Willi Castro. Final score: Eastern Division 11, West 10. Winning pitcher: Dusty Isaacs, Lansing Lugnuts.

had agreed that the ninth inning would be the final frame. All available pitchers had been used. If the West escaped the ninth, the game would end in a tie. (Both the 1972 and 1991 Midwest League All-Star Games had finished deadlocked.) Not this time. Pompey drove a single up the middle, carrying the Eastern Division All-Stars to the 6-5 walk-off win – and bringing a secret sigh of relief to a select few.

Vladdy Jr. Arrives
As far as late-inning drama was concerned, the least exciting All-Star Game was held the previous year in Kane County. By the time Noah Syndergaard – then a Lugnuts fireballing teenager, now the dominant Thor in the New York Mets’ rotation – took the mound for the bottom of the second inning, the Eastern Division already led, 13-0. They had scored five runs in the first, then followed up with an eightrun second. Future Blue Jays outfielder Kevin Pillar, the
The Lansing Lugnuts have been well represented as a franchise in the league’s showcase event. 109 Nuts have been named All-Stars in team history, from future Major Leaguer Mark Quinn in 1996 to a likely future Major Leaguer, Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., last year. The Nuts have had at least four All-Stars in 20 of their 22 seasons, at least five All-Stars in 12 seasons, and at least seven All-Stars in five separate seasons. In the Lugnuttiest All-Star Game, Lansing placed eight players on the 2004 Eastern Division All-Star Team, including future Major Leaguers

Jake Fox, Carlos Marmol, Adalberto Mendez, Billy Petrick and Clay Rapada. The most recent All-Star Game, last year at Great Lakes, saw Guerrero Jr. and fellow teenage phenom Bo Bichette steal the show. The 18-year-old Guerrero Jr. reached the finals of the ASG Home Run Derby the day before the game, and then plated the 19-year-old Bichette for the Eastern Division’s first run in the game. Throughout the festivities, the duo was heralded for their skills and potential. This was their stage. They were the marquee attractions. Only a few short weeks later, they were named All-Stars of a different sort, representing the Toronto Blue Jays at the MLB Futures Games during the Major League All-Star Break in Miami. It was just the latest illustration of how short the road could be between the Midwest League and the national stage.

Thrill to the slugging exploits in the Home Run Derby – and maybe even catch one of the homers. Snag one of the commemorative batting helmets that the Lugnuts will be giving out at the gates. Collect autographs from each player selected as Eastern and Western Division All-Stars. Then drink in
their performances – every big swing, sinking fastball, biting hook, diving grab, and lightning peg across the diamond. Remember their names. Remember where you saw them. Then – five years, ten years,
maybe even sixteen years from now – point at them, while they’re playing in the MLB All-Star Game or in the World Series, and tell your friends and family the story of how you first saw them play at Cooley Law School Stadium on June 19th, 2018.

Lined up alongside our Delta Dental Kids Days, Dog Days of Summer, Dollar Deal Days, Winning Wednesdays, Labatt Thirsty Thursdays and LAFCU Fireworks Spectaculars, we’ve prepared a lineup of jersey giveaways, bobbleheads, brotanks, Tri-Wizard Cups and more. Commemorative Scarf presented by Auto-Owners Insurance GM TP: “A great multi-use item that is climate acceptable for Michigan’s Aprils.” No kidding, TP! It’s cold outside, but it’s also baseball season, so you have to make sure you dress appropriately. We’ve got your back – or at least, the back of your neck. Welcome back baseball at the Opening Day Block Party starting at 3 p.m., Meet the Team, collect autographs, enjoy food, entertainment and maybe a nice cup of hot cocoa, and then head right to the gates at 5 p.m. to collect your scarf, which was designed by fan contest and chosen by fan vote during the offseason. Plus, we’ve set aside special general admission Temperature Tickets costing just 35 cents, matching the high temperature forecasted for the game, with LAFCU Fireworks after the game.

LugLife Bro-Tank GM TP: “You didn’t choose the Lug Life, it chose you.” Lansing. Lugnuts. Bro. Tank. It speaks for itself, doesn’t it? It’s our first annual College Keystone and Salute to Bro-Tanks Night. Be one of the first 1,000 fans through the gate to pick up your one of a kind LugLife bro-tank, then enjoy Keystone specials all game long, and root on the Nuts against archrival West Michigan.

Mike Sadler Jersey presented by WILX GM TP: “This is special. A terrific co-branded item that will generate exposure and funding for the Michael Sadler Foundation.” From the Spartan-green Lugnuts No. 3 jersey we’re giving to the first 1,000 fans through the gates to selling Hey Diddle Diddle, the craft beer dedicated in his name, we’re proud to honor the memory of Mike Sadler, an unforgettable man – and a darn great punter to boot. All proceeds from Hey Diddle Diddle sales as well as from a silent auction at the game will benefit the Michael Sadler Foundation. This is Mike’s night, and we’re honored to come together with his family in paying tribute to his memory and legacy.

5.19
Noah Syndergaard Game of Thrones Bobblehead presented by Sparrow
GM TP: “Not only was Noah in the show, but he would probably be a first-round spear thrower.” Remember young Noah Syndergaard from 2012, the big blond Texan who threw 100 miles per hour? Now he’s doing things like dominating the National League, wearing his hair long, answering to the nickname “Thor,” and popping up on HBO as a member of the Lannister Army! Forget his East Coast baseball exploits, we’re honoring Noah’s cameo on Game of Thrones Night, giving Thespian Thor bobbleheads to the first 1,000 fans through the gates. For one night only, Cooley Law School Stadium is turning into Westeros, and the Lugnuts will be dressed accordingly. Spoiler alert: LAFCU Fireworks follow the game.
5.20
Color Rush Lugnuts Jersey presented by Delta Dental
GM TP: “Flipping the Lugnuts colors, just because we can and it’s cool.” Quick, what color are the Lugnuts’ uniforms? Answer: White at home, black on the road… until now. You’ll be happy to see red, because on this Delta Dental Kids Day, we’re giving the first 1,000 fans through the gates their own red Lugnuts Color Rush Jersey. Why? You heard TP. That’s just how we roll. Come early to make sure you get your jersey, and then suit up and play pre-game catch on the field with your family!
6.17
Guerrero Jr. Father’s Day Jersey GM TP: “Awesome Guerrero connection and Blue Jays are technically our father. Right?” Right, TP. One of the best moments of 2017 came when Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero sneaked out onto the field and surprised Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., our star third baseman, by throwing out the first pitch. What day was it? Father’s Day. Now a year later, Vladdy Junior is the hottest prospect in baseball, skyrocketing his way toward Toronto and soon to be the most popular man in Canada. If you’re one of the first 1,000 fans through the gates, you’ll get your very own Blue Jays-blue Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. Lugnuts jersey. Then play pre-game catch on the field with your dad before sitting back and enjoying the final game of the first half, leading into…

The first 1,000 fans will receive an honest-to-goodness All-Star Batting Helmet – and, hey, if you want to put massive amounts of nachos or Dippin Dots in there, be our guest! The top prospects in baseball are coming to Cooley Law School Stadium, with a pre-game Home Run Derby, amazing guest appearances, two huge autograph sessions with the teams, and LAFCU Fireworks after the game. It’s the Midwest League’s biggest party of the year, we’re hosting, and everyone’s invited. (Even West Michigan.)

Tri-Wizard Cup powered by MI Student Aid GM TP: “Everybody wins a trophy, regardless of wizardry/magic accomplishments.” Maybe not everyone, TP. Only the first 1,000 fans will receive their very own Tri-Wizard Cup on Harry Potter Night powered by MI Student Aid. Last year this was one of the biggest nights of the entire season. We’re going even bigger this year, transfiguring the ballpark into Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Our top Potterphile, Mikaela, will have the butterbeer brewing, the sorting hat sorting, and the Quidditch action revving up. Win the House Cup, show off proper wand technique, and cheer on the Lugnuts’ beaters, followed by post-game LAFCU Fireworks.

Beer Stein presented by LSJ GM TP: “Awesome Guerrero connection and Blue Jays are technically our father. Right?” No argument here! It’s Craft Beer Night on a Labatt Thirsty Thursday, meaning that in addition to the usual fantastic $2 wine specials, $2 beer specials and $2 pop specials, we’ll be serving the finest in Michigan craft beer throughout the stadium. The first 1,000 fans will receive their own Lugnut-themed beer stein – we’ll drink to that! Here’s to friends, Nuts, craft beer, and great times while surrounded by all three.

presented by Farm Bureau Insurance GM TP: “We love the great state of Michigan and we’ll shout it from all ends of the ballpark.” Hey, TP’s a Dansville guy and a Chippewa, he knows what he’s talking about: Mid Michigan, the Thumb, the U.P., the beaches, the ballparks, the cherries, the fudge, the dunes, and more. We’re saluting the Mitten on Pure Michigan Night presented by Farm Bureau Insurance, complete with a Michigan-inspired jersey for the first 1,000 fans! And we’ll also be inducting the newest members of our Michigan Baseball Hall of Fame class, recognizing the best in our national pastime at every level of baseball from around the state. (Get ready for some more CMU love.) LAFCU Fireworks follows the game, a perfect capper to the evening.

Pablo Sanchez Bobblehead powered by MI Student Aid
GM TP: “The GOAT. Enough said.” Babe Ruth? Barry Bonds? Mike Trout? No. Pablo Sanchez. We’re celebrating the greatest of them all on Backyard Baseball Night powered by MI Student Aid. The Backyard series began with baseball in 1997, meaning the time is right to celebrate The Secret Weapon himself on his 21st birthday. The first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive their own Lugnuts-themed Pablo Sanchez bobblehead. There’s plenty more up our sleeve as we haul out all the stops to give Pablo the bash he deserves, followed by LAFCU Fireworks.

Lugnuts/MSU Baseball Cap presented by Auto-Owners Insurance
GM TP: “Adding to the hat swag collection since 2007.” The Crosstown Showdown presented by Auto-Owners Insurance heads into its 12th year, bringing together the Lansing and East Lansing communities on the day after the Midwest League regular season ends for the grand exhibition contest between the Lugnuts and the Michigan State Spartans. The teams may be facing off in a Home Run Derby and ballgame, but this commemorative cap will combine the two sides beautifully, presented to the first 1,000 fans through the gates.
That’s 13 dates that aren’t to be missed this spring and summer at Cooley Law School Stadium – and we didn’t even mention Comic-Con Night on May 5th, the Helicopter Drops on May 6th and August 12th, the Beer Mile at May 17th, Pride Night on May 18th, Eat-A-Paloozas on May 26th and August 29th,
Swipe Right Night on May 31st, Star Wars Night on June 16th, Salute to Service Night on July 20th, Stranger Things Night on July 21st and the Cottage Inn Pizza Party on August 10th, let alone the 4th of July LAFCU Fireworks Spectacular, which combines each year with all of the fireworks shows
in the area to make Cooley Law School Stadium the best spot in Mid Michigan and the Midwest League to spend your Independence Day. An All-Star summer? It’s a full All-Star year, from April through September, making certain you won’t come away empty-handed.

Season Review
2017 Scorecard The left side of the 2017 Lansing Lugnuts infield was the talk of Minor League Baseball. 19-yearold SS Bo Bichette and 18-yearold 3B Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. amassed hits, headlines and hardware, representing the Lugnuts and Blue Jays in both the MWL All-Star Game and MLB All-Star Futures Game. Bichette, who batted .384 with 109 hits and a 1.071 OPS in 70 games in Lansing, finished the year by capturing the Minor League batting crown and both the Midwest League Most Valuable Player Award and
Prospect of the Year award, earning the honor of Minor League Baseball Offensive Player of the Year. Guerrero, the toughest batter to strike out in the circuit, added a .316 average and .888 OPS in 71 games – and caught a surprise ceremonial first pitch from Vladimir Guerrero, Sr. on Father’s Day. As a team, the 63-73 Lugnuts threw an Opening Day Block Party, won their 1500th game in franchise history, dropped Easter Eggs from a helicopter, celebrated craft beer and the
Oldsmobile legacy, paused play to watch the Solar Eclipse and drew the largest July 3-4 crowd for any team below the Triple-A level: 11,449. Alongside the Bo and Vlad Jr. Show, the Lugnuts received memorable performances from INF Bradley Jones, who posted a .560 slugging percentage in 49 games and was named the MWL April Player of the Month; OF Edward Olivares, who hit for the fifth cycle in team history on April 24th; OF Nick Sinay, who set a new Midwest League

The Lansing Lugnuts are a part of the Toronto Blue Jays organization. The Lugnuts are the Low A affiliate of the Blue Jays. That means they are near the bottom of the Toronto farm system, slightly higher than the Bluefield Blue Jays (another A affiliate) and the Gulf Coast Blue Jays (Rookie). Baseball players work their way up through the organization in hopes of getting to the big leagues. Toronto is in the American League and pulls its talent from these teams.

Originally signed by the Blue Jays at age 17 out of San Pedro de Macoris, Dominican Republic, he played three years in the Jays’ system, advancing as high as Auburn in 2002. After one year as Bluefield Blue Jays hitting coach, Martín was named the manager for the rookie-level Gulf Coast League Blue Jays in 2015 and 2016 and posted impressive 39-19 and 39-17 campaigns. Under Martín’s lead last season, 22 different Lugnuts received promotions, with Jared Carkuff and Griffin Glaude each reaching Triple-A Buffalo. The Nuts posted a 37-29 record in the first half behind Midwest League MVP/Prospect of the Year Bo Bichette and fellow top prospect Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., finishing 63-73 for the year.

An outfielder and second baseman, he played nine seasons professionally, reaching the Majors with the Braves in 2011 and the Detroit Tigers in 2012. After several years of working insurance following the end of his playing career, Young opened the Top Prospect Academy in Grapevine, Texas, where he serves as general manager. He currently resides in Carrollton, Texas.

LANSING LUGNUTS
Lugnuts Charities
Taking great pride in your community is a characteristic evident amongst so many in surrounding areas. That same sense of pride permeates the Lugnuts’ offices at Cooley Law School Stadium, creating a strong desire to give back to the greater Lansing region. As the season approaches, members of the Lugnuts’ staff head out to elementary schools throughout the area to stress the importance of education and spread the message of baseball by the numbers – highlighting the importance of math in the game. Nine players on the field, three strikes, ninety feet to first base, going 2-for-5 from the plate for a .400 batting average – everywhere you look, numbers and math define the game of baseball. “We’re illustrating to kids that math is a part of our everyday lives, even when we’re playing—like in baseball. Stressing the importance of math in a fun way keeps learning exciting,” said General Manager Tyler Parsons. “Our game of baseball trivia incorporates math, and Big Lug is right there to help the kids. It’s a great combination of education, baseball and fun.”
appearances at events and clinics throughout the season. In 2017, Lugnuts players made hospital visits, appeared at numerous group outings and helped lead on-field clinics at Cooley Law School Stadium. “We are proud of the support the Lansing community has for our Lugnuts,” said Myers. “They invest their time in our team, and we love being able to reciprocate and show our players the impact they make in Mid-Michigan.”
“Our goal is to bring smiles to as many faces as possible at events throughout the area,” said Lugnuts co-owner Sherrie Myers, “and Big Lug’s big smile does that in a big way.”
Outside of appearances, the Lugnuts are actively involved with supporting youth through Lugnut Charities. Lugnut Charities is dedicated to supporting existing programs to benefit youth in the greater Lansing community. For the 2018 season, Lugnut Charities are proud to partner with Impression Five Science Center, Capital Area United Way and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. The organizations all have a custom designed package with the Lugnuts, using ballpark inventory to meet their key objectives.
While Big Lug is often the most popular attraction at every event he attends, he is happy to step aside as the Lansing Lugnuts players themselves make
“We want to maximize the impact of minor league baseball and our active fan base to get their messages out to our fans,” Myers said. “Every

season affords us an opportunity for new ideas and ways to focus our time and talents on giving back to the charitable organizations throughout the community.” One of the highlights every summer is Lugnut Charities Night, sponsored by Dan Henry Distributing. The annual event celebrates the efforts of the Lugnuts’ partners in the community. This season’s festivities commence on August 31st and will again feature the popular “Jersey Off Their Back” silent auction. Fans can bid on authentic, game-worn jerseys from Lugnuts players. All proceeds from the evening will benefit the Capital Area United Way.
Visit lansinglugnuts.com for more information. By the end of the season, if we use our math skills to add the Lugnuts’ appearances in the community to the Lugnut Charities’ efforts, the end result equals the great sense of pride exhibited by Lugnuts players, front office staff and Big Lug in ensuring the Mid-Michigan community is well taken care of.
