Letter from the MWL President
Celebrating 72 years of Midwest League baseball To Our Loyal Midwest League Fans: After a challenging winter in the Midwest, Spring is here and with it Midwest League baseball. Our game is a treasure and each of our communities in the Midwest League is blessed to be PRIMARY LEAGUE LOGO able to attend games and enjoy the exciting atmosphere, and the young stars who will some day populate the Major Leagues. One aspect of the Midwest League many may not know about, is we lead Minor League Baseball in “GBs”. What is a GB you might ask? It is Give Backs. Last year our Clubs gave back to their communities, donations which amounted to over 7 million dollars. The Cougars in Kane County contributed over 1 million dollars, and Quad Cities led all of Minor League Baseball in cash donations. Lake County has a wonderful Miracle Field right next to their ballpark. The rest of our Clubs have great stories to tell as well. Bottom line, Midwest League Clubs are a shining example of corporate citizenship. Every ticket you buy will yield a return on investment in our own home towns for those who are in need. Speaking of home towns, mine will host the All-Star Game on Tuesday, June 18. It will be in South Bend for the first time in 30 years. I invite all of you to take a road trip or drive down the street to see the premier event of the year in our League. Lansing last year and Midland the year before have set the bar really high. I look forward to how South Bend meets the challenge. PRIMARY LEAGUE LOGO ON DARK BACKGROUNDS

Former Lugnut , Vlad Guerrero, Jr. is Baseball’s Number One prospect by Jesse Goldberg-Strassler Today he is the No. 1 prospect in all of baseball. When the kid’s name was first spoken amongst Lansing Lugnuts, however, it came amid chuckles and disbelief. It was July 2nd, 2015, and the Lugnuts were on the road at Lake County. Tim Locastro, Lansing’s dynamic middle infielder – drafted out of little-known D-III Ithaca College, yet so prone to making big plays that coach Ken Huckaby had nicknamed him “The Magic Man” – received a phone call. He had been packaged with former Lugnuts ace Chase De Jong and traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. For what? Three international bonus pool slots. Oh, and the Toronto Blue Jays that same day had spent $3.9 million to sign the top international free agent prospect on the market, a 16-year-old born in Montreal and raised in Don Gregorio, Dominican Republic: Vladimir Guerrero, Jr.

Guerrero, Jr. was soon joined by another bonus Lugnut, a teenager from Florida carrying the familiar Major League surname of Bichette. They ate all of the pregame and postgame meals and watched the end of the regular season from the dugout. Who knew that they were there? Only the scouts who came early enough to watch batting practice, any interested members of the Lake County Captains, and the Lugnuts themselves. On September 6th, 2016, Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. and Bo Bichette made their unofficial Lugnuts debuts in direct competition with one another.
In Locastro’s mind, his trade was absolutely linked to the signing of the kid. Chuckles and disbelief abounded. A year later, the 17-yearold Guerrero, Jr. arrived in Lansing. It was a secret arrival, following the end of the Bluefield Blue Jays’

Appalachian League season. There was no corresponding roster move, only an extra body traveling on the Dean Trailways motorcoach to Eastlake, Ohio, and an extra batter, his number not listed on the roster, taking cuts in the cage at Lake County’s Classic Park.
The 10th Annual Crosstown Showdown presented by Auto-Owners Insurance was originally set for early April, same as the nine Showdowns before it. Ah, but the usual inclement Michigan weather had washed away those plans and complicated rescheduling options. A gamble was risked by the Lugnuts’ and Spartans’ brass: Why not try playing the game after the regular season? To make the night feel more special, a pre-game Home Run Derby was organized involving three Michigan State Spartans sluggers and three Lansing Lugnuts sluggers. One champion from each team would advance to the final round, where an ultimate champion would be crowned. The sluggers for the Lugnuts would be Connor Panas, one of the team’s best home

run hitters from the regular season, taking on Vladdy Jr. and Bo. The result might be mostly forgotten now – the older Panas triumphed decisively in both rounds, capturing the first Home Run Derby title – but those who were in attendance will recall with clarity the laser that Guerrero, Jr., in the No. 17 home white uniform, sizzled off the Mike’s Hard Lemonade advertisement halfway up the Cooley Law School Stadium video board. This was the first memory created by a Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., braces on his teeth, wearing his age on his jersey. (Bo, ultra-competitive as he is, would likely offer a reminder that he beat Vladdy in the contest, as was his stated goal.) Vladdy Jr. had to wear No. 17, you know. The coveted No. 27, his father’s number – a number so proudly associated with his family that it is marked in white rocks on a hillside above the Nizao River, a lasting reminder to all who see it that this is where the first Vladimir Guerrero makes his home – was being worn that day by Connor Panas, as he had all season. In 2017, the No. 27 uniform was handed to Guerrero from Day 1. He arrived off the plane from Spring Training newly elevated to the No. 1 prospect in the Blue Jays’ organization, MLB. com’s No. 3 overall third-base

prospect in the Minor Leagues. The Lugnuts’ manager, his fellow Dominican César Martín, expressed a note of worry about his young star. The Midwest League was a notorious pitcher’s league. Worse, the April conditions in Lansing and elsewhere would be far colder than he was used to, another advantage for pitchers. There was the distinct chance of an early season slump, a tough mental hurdle for an inexperienced player unused to struggling. In his first official game with the Lugnuts, April 7th in Great Lakes, in 51-degree conditions, Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. batted fourth, played third base, and drilled an opposite-field, goahead, two-run homer to lift the Lugnuts to a 7-3 seasonopening victory. He walked twice in his second game; singled, doubled and walked in his third game; and singled and walked twice in his fourth game, finishing the series against the Loons with a quick .417 average and .588 on-base percentage – 10 times aboard in 17 at-bats. So it was that the 18-yearold Guerrero, Jr., batterunfriendly conditions and all, reached base in his first 29 games of the Midwest League season, all while handling himself with a surprising manner and work ethic. “When you see that name Guerrero on the back of
the jersey, you can make assumptions about who he is,” manager Martín told ESPN The Magazine reporter Robert Sanchez. “But he never asked to be treated differently. He doesn’t just want to talk to the Spanish-speaking players. He goes out of his way to include everyone. He doesn’t think he’s special. He works like he’s trying to prove something. He plays like he’s poor.” The more Guerrero, Jr. excelled, the more the question was asked around Cooley Law School Stadium: When would Vladdy be promoted? It wasn’t in May, when he went on a torrid stretch of 10 hits in four games (still finding time to draw two more walks). It wasn’t at the close of the first half in June, when his famed father made a surprise visit specifically on Father’s Day, threw out a first pitch to Junior, and then watched him from the suites. It wasn’t when he was named the starting third baseman for the Eastern Division All-Star Team at the Midwest League All-Star Game, was invited to participate in the Home Run Derby, and then made it to the finals before falling. And he wasn’t promoted immediately after the All-Star Game, when he returned to Lansing and hit back-to-back home runs with Bo Bichette against Bowling Green; slammed the West Michigan Whitecaps in front of the biggest crowd of the year on Independence Day, hitting a single, double and scoring
Vladimir Guerrero, Jr.
three runs in a 10-4 win before a throng of 11,449; and then followed up with home runs on both July 5th and July 6th. It was the MLB Futures Game in Miami at the Major League All-Star Break that at last took Vladdy Jr. away from Lansing, where he went 2-for-4 on national television against the best pitching prospects in baseball, and then stayed in Florida to join the Blue Jays’ A-Advanced Florida State League affiliate, the Dunedin Blue Jays. After a singles-heavy July in Dunedin, Guerrero, Jr. found a
new gear to cap the season. He earned the honor of the FSL’s August Player of the Month after batting .385 with a .483 on-base percentage and a .646 slugging percentage, slugging six home runs, and reaching base 57 times in 27 games. Yes, the Dunedin Blue Jays won the Florida State League championship. But if August 2017 was a new gear, what was 2018 in New Hampshire? Playing in Double-A, in more cold, in another pitcher-friendly league, Guerrero, Jr. hit greater heights. His batting average was .373 after posting

a 3-for-4 game on April 28th, .402 after going 3-for-5 on May 10th, .427 after a 4-for4 performance on May 16th, and a simply awesome, thiscan’t-possibly-be-right, whatis-happening .438 following a 3-for-4 showing on May 25th. It was already his 24th multihit game of the year. An injury suffered in early June tempered enthusiasm somewhat (and allowed Cavan Biggio’s breakthrough season to seize the stage), but Guerrero, Jr. was back on July 19th and hitting again: 10 hits in seven games, with at least one hit a game, sent him onward to the

And that brings us to where we are now, two years after Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. played for the Lansing Lugnuts. The kid with the braces and the big swing is now starring in articles headlined “Is Vlad Jr. the Best Prospect Ever?” as written by Jim Callis for MLB. com on January 28th, 2019. “All Guerrero did last year, at age 19,” Callis wrote, “was lead the Minors in hitting (.381), slugging (.636) and OPS (1.120) while reaching Triple-A. Good luck finding a scout who thinks he wasn’t ready to handle big league pitching as a teenager… [L]et’s ask some bigger questions. Is he the best prospect in history? And if not, is he the best offensive prospect ever? We’ve been posing those questions to veteran evaluators… The consensus: His game isn’t well-rounded enough to call him the best prospect ever, but it’s difficult to find anyone who offered more offensive promise at a younger age.” Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. There had been a rising argument from outside the Blue Jays’ camp to skip Buffalo entirely and ship the 19-yearold directly up to Toronto. Toronto resisted the pressure, to Buffalo’s everlasting gratitude. 9,477 attended the Guerrero, Jr.’s first game at Coca-Cola Field on July 31st and were treated to the sight of three patient walks, one RBI and two runs scored. His first
16
LANSING LUGNUTS
hit came the next day, a single, followed by a double on August 2nd. Less than a week later, he had solved International League pitching, slugging home runs on August 8th and August 9th against Gwinnett, and August 10th and August 11th against Toledo. By the time the season was through, Guerrero, Jr. had five three-hit games, six home runs and a .978 OPS at the highest level of Minor League Baseball.
Before Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., the Lansing Lugnuts had never had a player named the No. 1 prospect in baseball – and neither had their parent club, the Toronto Blue Jays. The top Lugnuts prospect all-time before Guerrero, Jr. is likely Carlos Beltrán, a teenager who opened the inaugural 1996 season in Lansing, struggled, got hurt, and never came back. Three years later, he won the American League Rookie of the Year Award. Now, following a 20-year, 2,725-hit, 435-homer,
Vladimir Guerrero, Jr.
312-steal MLB career, Beltrán has an argument for enshrinement in the National Baseball Hall of Fame. This, a Hall of Fame ceiling, is what pundits declare Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. possesses. He topped two different esteemed offseason prospect lists, Baseball America and Major League Baseball’s own MLB Pipeline. His hit tool was given an 80 grade, the highest possible. “[T]here’s no question that Guerrero is the best prospect in baseball,” said MLB.com’s Callis.
like it. ‘It’s no good,’ he says. ‘Maybe in three years. It makes me sound old. I’m Vladimir Guerrero. I’ve always been Vladimir Guerrero.’ ” It is two years later, not three years. Two years after he tore

up the Midwest League as a Lansing Lugnut, the new Vladimir Guerrero is about to arrive. His number is 27. He is also number 1, and deservedly so.
The 2019 season began inauspiciously for Toronto and its top prospect: a baseballwide discussion about the Blue Jays’ plans to keep Guerrero, Jr. in the Minor Leagues to begin the season, followed by an oblique injury for the now 20-year-old slugger, an early setback. Still, MLB.com’s David Adler predicted Guerrero, Jr. would win the American League Rookie of the Year, as did 19 voters on ESPN. com. There is little doubt, too, that the Blue Jays have planned their future around the phenom, looking to launch their next upward push with him at the forefront. Back in 2017, Robert Sanchez wrote about the elder Guerrero from Lansing, “Only recently have the people around Vlad begun calling him Senior. The word sounds harsh, like the past tense of what once was a really lively verb. Vlad doesn’t

o understand Copa de La Diversión and why the Lansing Lugnuts will be changing their name to the Lansing Locos for four games this season – May 3rd, 4th, 5th and August 18 – go back to January 6th, 2015, the first day on the job for Kurt Hunzeker as Vice President of Marketing Strategy and Research at Minor League Baseball. “I did my paperwork,” recalled Hunzeker, “and then [said], let’s find ways to help our clubs grow their fanbase… The focus on the fans drives commercial revenue. The more fans you have coming to the ballpark, you have a better story to tell.” A day of research led Hunzeker to an enormous untapped market. Though Minor League Baseball was the self-designated favorite sport of Latinx fans living in the United States at a level higher than any league other than Major League Soccer, it was not translating to drawing Latinx fans proportionally to the ballpark. Why not?
Day 2 on the job, Hunzeker set about answering that question. “We undertook a multi-year research project to find out why… had some great feedback, direct feedback from the community, and then we deployed our clubs out in the communities to gain a lot of this feedback,” he said. “It really came down to, ‘You represent the community but there are some things that don’t really speak to me. Sometimes I don’t feel invited.’ Things along those lines. That really led all of us, not just at the league level but at the individual club level, to take an introspective look.” In 2017, spurred by the results being generated by the study, Minor League Baseball introduced Es Divertido Ser Un Fan, translating the English “It’s Fun to be a Fan” campaign. This was planned as the start of a slow, incremental rollout. The next stage was set for 2018: a trial run with the Minor League teams in Charlotte, Kane County, Las Vegas and Visalia conducting outreach to their Latinx communities and revamping their brand with a Latinx feel.
19
How the Lugnuts Became the Locos
“The four teams were selected for a number of reasons,” said Hunzeker. “One of the biggest reasons is I could effectively take the other 156 teams and put them in each of those four categories geographic or demographic segments that those four represent: Las Vegas is a large market with a pretty strong heritage Hispanic marketplace. Charlotte is a large market with more of an emerging second generation Hispanic marketplace, so we’re going to learn a lot there. Some things that work in Charlotte may not work in Las Vegas. Kane County is more the suburban marketplace. Visalia’s more the smaller market. So I can take all the teams and kinda split ‘em up. Then we can have lookalikes. Like this worked here, it could work here.” It not only worked, the success arrived even sooner than Hunzeker expected. The inaugural quartet was so ready to go that they requested permission to begin the program in 2017, rather
2019 Locos
than 2018. Minor League Baseball gave the go-ahead, and the rebrands began. The Visalia Rawhide, it turned out, had always wanted to call themselves the Visalia Toros, but had been denied the opportunity due to a copyright claim. Now, years later, the name was theirs and they eagerly took it. The Kane County Cougars, meanwhile, kept their name but changed their colors, seizing an opportunity to establish their brand in a market they had never penetrated before. For each of the four clubs, the experiment proved a hit beyond all expectations. Latinx fans flooded in to the ballpark, energizing their special nights. With the campaign accelerated by a year, it was now in 2018 – not 2019 as was planned – that the Copa de La Diversión (“Fun Cup”) was officially rolled out. “It doesn’t matter if you speak English, Spanish, French, German, whatever,” said Hunzeker, “fun is fun is fun. Or as now we say it, fun is divertido. So it’s fun at the

core, fun is the name of the trophy, let’s just own it.” 29 more teams joined Visalia, Kane County, Charlotte and Las Vegas in the inaugural Copa, spanning 163 Minor League Baseball games. Again, the reaction was a grand slam success. Per-game attendance on those days rose by 12.6 percent, from under 4,000 to nearly 4,900 fans
39 new Minor League teams reached out to join the Copa de La Diversión platform for the 2019 season. One of those teams was the Lansing Lugnuts. The 2019 Copa de La Diversión will feature teams named the Jefes (Brooklyn), the Margaritas (El Paso), the Lowriders (Fresno), the Mal de Oro (“Evil Eye,” Durham), the Música (Memphis), the Churros (San Jose) and the Familia (Trenton). In the Midwest League, there are three direct competitors: the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers introduced Los Cascabeles de Wisconsin (“Jingle Bells”), the West Michigan Whitecaps countered with Las Calaveras de West Michigan (“Skulls”), and the Clinton LumberKings topped both with the Clinton Elotes… delicious Mexican grilled corn. What is the first step to building an entirely new brand, like the Copa de La Diversión campaign asks of each participating team? Is it about choosing a new name, like Visalia focused on? Is it choosing new colors, like the Kane County Cougars, who declined to change their name or logo?
per game. Nationwide retail sales smashed all expectations, bringing in over $3.6 million. And the campaign also received its just due across the country, receiving national coverage from Sports Illustrated and Bleacher Report on its rollout day and capped off with Ballpark Digest’s award for Best Logo/Branding – the first time the award had ever been given to a multi-team effort rather than an individual franchise. In December 2018, at the Opening Session of the Winter Meetings, a special MiLB Latinx Advisory Committee awarded the official Copa de La Diversión trophy to Mariachis de Nuevo México (the rebranded Albuquerque Isotopes), who had set a franchise attendance record with 16,975 fans in their first Copa game, raised over $7,500 for the Albuquerque Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s Education Excellence Scholar Program, and led all Copa teams in revenue gain and commercial partnership revenue.

A special Lansing-based Copa committee – a focus group to aid the Lugnuts with feedback for their branding work – was convened: Sein Benavides, Javier Cavazos, Traci Ruiz, Nino Rodriguez and Guillermo Lopez, offering their thoughts to the Lugnuts’ trio of Tyler Parsons, Ashley Loudan and Stephanie Smigiel. How did Guillermo Lopez feel to be asked to be part of the committee? The Lugnuts were “locos!” he said with a laugh. “No, fue buenito cuando preguntaron si podía ayudar con este proyecto. Estoy bastante content con ser parte del comité.” Translated: It was good when they asked if I could help with this project. I’m happy enough to be part of the committee. “My reaction was a surprise,” said Nino Rodriguez. “But at the same time, knowing what Lansing is all about, and the inclusion that Lansing’s philosophy has, I was not surprised.” “We started off being really naïve,” said Lansing general manager Tyler Parsons, “like hey, we’re just

“As we dove into it more, we understood there needed to be a story, there needed to be a reason, there needed to be an actual emotional response elicited when they saw our name and our brand. As we talked to this group, we really realized we went about it the wrong way and took a total 180.”
“I really like the name,” said Traci Ruiz. “I think it’s entertaining and creative, so kudos to the people that came up with it, Los Locos. I think it’ll be fun for our community and a really good time to celebrate the Latin history and culture.” Nino Rodriguez’s initial reaction: “I think you should be Don Quixote! You should be loco to create a name like that.” The Lansing Locos now needed a central image, like the Lugnuts’ Luggy the Lugnut. “Let’s find something fun,” Parsons described. “Let’s find something that when people see this, they laugh, they smile, it brings out enjoyment. We stumbled across a bird, the potoo bird, an indigenous bird down in Central and South America… It really is a crazy bird!”
The decision-making turned toward the heart of the Lugnuts, back to the team’s newsmaking, controversial start. The nickname was notoriously reported to famously negative feedback, with one fan writing to the Lansing State Journal with a scoff: Should the team be called the Lugs or the Nuts? The implication being – what baseball player would want to be called either one? Yet here are the Lansing Lugnuts entering their 24th season and lovingly called the Lugs or, more prominently, the Nuts. As it is sung in the team’s theme song, itself dating back to 1996, “You’ve got to Go Nuts, Go Nuts, Go Nuts, Go Nuts, Lugnuts, Lugnuts, Lugnuts – Go Nuts! Lugnuts!” And with that refrain of “Go Nuts,” the rallying cry of the franchise for nearly a quarter-century, the team had found its story, its reason for the new brand. “We’ve been telling people since 1996 to go nuts with us,” said Parson, “and we wanted to have that same resonance with the Hispanic community. “ ‘Let’s Go Nuts’ translates to Vamos Locos in

The Locos’ colors came next, vibrant and joyful, contrasting the Lugnuts’ brash red, sleek silver and intimidating black with the Locos’ eye-catching turquoise, marigold and pink – colors that virtually demand an exclamation point, the same way that ¡Vamos Locos! must be shouted, not whispered. And there is the potoo, in all of its large-eyed, singing grandeur, at the center of it all. Four games were chosen to serve as the Lugnuts’ Copa de La Diversión contests: a three-game series hosting Beloit, May 3rd through May 5th, and a Sunday at the end of the season on August 18th. Each day will be its own special event, going beyond a simple name and brand change. Friday, May 3rd, is Education Night, with the theme stretching from bilingual Spanish and English classes being taught during the game, to college booths for high school students from Michigan State, Central Michigan, Grand Valley State, LCC, Olivet and Adrian College, to trade booths, plus player autographs and a Meet and Greet with the Lugnuts. Saturday, May 4th, is Heritage Night, beginning with a free youth baseball clinic on the field,

followed by a special pre-game Softball Game and a slide show of former and current Latinx Mid Michigan athletes. Sunday, May 5th, caps off the weekend with a spectacular Cinco de Mayo Celebration, with a Street Festival starting at 3 p.m. leading up to the 6 p.m. first pitch, live music from Gabriel Burciaga & The Bad Boyz, food trucks, local vendors, an outside bar, a mariachi band, and a jalapeño-eating contest! Three months later, the Lansing Locos re-don their turquoise uniforms for Latino Day: mariachi music, dancing, and more, with all of the beloved elements of a Delta Dental Kids Day, including pregame Catch on the Field and post-game Kids Run the Bases. “I’m excited to see the community come together for even more progress in Lansing,” said Traci Ruiz.
2019 Locos
“We’ve had a lot of progress, but it’s exciting to see the Lugnuts bring even more culture to our community and the progress, diversity, inclusion, and have all of our community come together. It’s going to be exciting.” “It’s an opportunity for all the Lansing area to get together and celebrate our diversity,” Nino Rodriguez said. “We are here for many years, we’re gonna be here for many more, then it’s good to celebrate and increase the number of Latinos or any other groups that want to participate in these kind of activities. We are here together to grow the dream, the future.” Added Rodriguez, “Thank you to the Lugnuts, the Locos, for having the courage to have these festivities for three days, to celebrate all together the way it should be celebrated forever. Thank you. Gracias.”

Season Review
2018 Scorecard The 2018 season was one to remember in Michigan’s state capital, as the Single-A Lansing Lugnuts hosted the league’s top players, broke records and made their return to the Midwest League postseason. Opening Day starter Yennsy Diaz was the first Lugnut to seize headlines, earning the honor of the Midwest League’s April Player of the Month after allowing only one earned run in 26 2/3 innings (a 0.31 ERA) and just six hits in 95 at-bats (a .063 average against) in the season’s opening month. The offense featured its own breakout star, shortstop/third baseman Kevin Smith, who posted a .355/407/.639 slash line in 46 games before a
rightful promotion to Dunedin. The Lugnuts finished the first half with a 43-27 record, capturing the wild card in the Eastern Division. On June 19th, Lansing hosted its fourth Midwest League AllStar Game, headlined by five Lugnuts: starters Maverik Buffo and Maximo Castillo, closer Dany Jimenez, infielder Kevin Vicuña and outfielder Chavez Young. The game drew an attendance of 9,396, one of the largest gates in the Midwest League all season – but it was topped by the 4th of July, when a throng of 11,302 cheered on the Lugnuts against West Michigan at Cooley Law School Stadium.
The Nuts finished the year with an 80-60 record, tying for the most single-season road wins (39) and posting the second most singleseason wins in franchise history. That record was built on the back of a league-leading 720 runs scored thanks in large part to 203 stolen bases, the most in Minor League Baseball. Young, one of three Lugnuts with at least 37 steals, further distinguished himself with 50 extra-base hits and a leagueleading 88 runs scored. And then there was first baseman/outfielder Ryan Noda, the picture of patience and power, who led all Midwest League hitters in wRC+ (160) while topping Minor League Baseball

with a remarkable 109 walks, a new Lugnuts franchise record. Noda did not hit his first home run until late May yet finished with 20 homers, third most in the league. The day before the Midwest League postseason, Blue Jays pitching prospect Nate Pearson returned to the mound from injury, striking out four in two innings and touching 102 mph in an exhibition victory over Michigan State University. But in the postseason itself, the Lugnuts bowed out in two hard-fought onerun defeats to the Bowling Green Hot Rods, who went on to capture their first MWL title.

The Lansing Lugnuts are a part of the Toronto Blue Jays organization. The Lugnuts are the Low A affiliate of the Blue Jays. That means they are near the bottom of the Toronto farm system, slightly higher than the Bluefield Blue Jays (another A affiliate) and the Gulf Coast Blue Jays (Rookie). Baseball players work their way up through the organization in hopes of getting to the big leagues. Toronto is in the American League and pulls its talent from these teams.

2019 LUGNUTS
Taking great pride in your community is a characteristic evident amongst so many in surrounding areas. That same sense of pride permeates the Lugnuts’ offices at Cooley Law School Stadium, creating a strong desire to give back to the greater Lansing region. As the season approaches, members of the Lugnuts’ staff head out to elementary schools throughout the area to stress the importance of education and spread the message of baseball by the numbers – highlighting the importance of math in the game. Nine players on the field, three strikes, ninety feet to first base, going 2-for-5 from the plate for a .400 batting average – everywhere you look, numbers and math define the game of baseball. “We’re illustrating to kids that math is a part of our everyday lives, even when we’re playing—like in baseball. Stressing the importance of math in a fun way keeps learning exciting,” said General Manager Tyler Parsons. “Our game of baseball trivia incorporates math, and Big Lug is right there to help the kids. It’s a great combination of education, baseball and fun.” In addition to visiting with students, Big Lug makes his way to all corners of Mid-Michigan – attending hundreds of local events while carrying with him a sense of Lansing Lugnuts pride. “Our goal is to bring smiles to as many faces as possible at events throughout the area,” said Lugnuts co-owner Sherrie Myers, “and Big Lug’s big smile does that in a big way.” While Big Lug is often the most popular attraction at every event he attends, he is happy to step aside as the Lansing Lugnuts players themselves make appearances at events and clinics throughout the season. In 2018, Lugnuts players made hospital visits, appeared at numerous group outings
and helped lead on-field clinics at Cooley Law School Stadium. “We are proud of the support the Lansing community has for our Lugnuts,” said Myers. “They invest their time in our team, and we love being able to reciprocate and show our players the impact they make in Mid-Michigan.” Outside of appearances, the Lugnuts are actively involved with supporting youth through Lugnut Charities. Lugnut Charities is dedicated to supporting existing programs to benefit youth in the greater Lansing community. For the 2019 season, Lugnut Charities are proud to partner with Impression Five Science Center, Capital Area United Way and the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Michigan. The organizations all have a custom designed package with the Lugnuts, using ballpark inventory to meet their key objectives. “We want to maximize the impact of minor league baseball and our active fan base to get their messages out to our fans,” Myers said. “Every season affords us an opportunity for new ideas and ways to focus our
time and talents on giving back to the charitable organizations throughout the community.” One of the highlights every summer is Lugnut Charities Night, sponsored by Dan Henry Distributing. The annual event celebrates the efforts of the Lugnuts’ partners in the community. This season’s festivities commence on August 30th and will again feature the popular “Jersey Off Their Back” silent auction. Fans can bid on authentic, game-worn jerseys from Lugnuts players. All proceeds from the evening will benefit the Capital Area United Way.
Visit lansinglugnuts.com for more information. By the end of the season, if we use our math skills to add the Lugnuts’ appearances in the community to the Lugnut Charities’ efforts, the end result equals the great sense of pride exhibited by Lugnuts players, front office staff and Big Lug in ensuring the Mid-Michigan community is well taken care of.
