CEO Message O
ur wonderful friends and supporters at Pirtek are once again holding the Pirtek Fishing Challenge. For the sixth year running Pirtek is partnering with Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA) to increase awareness of prostate cancer in the community and also to raise vital funds for our programs in research, awareness and support. The Pir tek Fishing Challenge is Australia’s biggest national fishing competition. It’s open to everyone – mums, dads, kids and grandparents. Competitors catch, photograph, release and upload a photo to the website for judging, to be eligible for the amazing prize pool. Registration is only $20, plus $5.95 postage and handling, and all proceeds go directly to PCFA. This year the event is being held on Sunday 23 March. There are fantastic prizes for you to win. There are 21 target species
nationally with three prize packs per species, plus a cash prize if you catch the mystery length fish in your category. Junior anglers don’t miss out either with Boating Camping Fishing (BCF) gift vouchers for first and second place. You don’t even have to fish to win. By registering you go into the draw to win a Stacer boat and other great give-aways. The idea is to get the family or a couple of mates involved; have a great time fishing and raise a few dollars for PCFA – and hopefully win some big prizes for yourself! Last year 7,500 anglers from all over Australia took part and the event raised $150,000 for PCFA. Please help us to make the Pirtek Fishing Challenge even bigger this year. Around the country Good start of 2014 in South Australia South Australia saw an exciting year in 2013 and 2014 should be even bigger and better. Over 100 Subway stores in metropolitan and rural SA now have PCFA blue ‘baseball cap’ money boxes at each till. Be sure to visit a store near you.
Western Australia It’s been an eventful last part of 2013 in Western Australia. A short overview of just a couple of things that happened: • ProState Active Cycle celebration event for 2013 – The riders came together to celebrate their achievement in completing this event and raising $140,000. • Roughrider Rudling Charity Golf Day 2013 – Held in honour of Peter Rudling who lost his life to prostate cancer, raising $7,300. Perth businessman and founder of Giving West, John Poynton, spoke about his prostate cancer experience. • Blackwoods dedicated their annual Get SAFE Day 2013 to prostate cancer, where employees learned about the disease and made a prostate promise.
In another unique initiative, local photographer Milton Wordley is donating part proceeds of the sale of his wine book A Year in the Life of Grange. Books can be ordered online (www.wordley.com.au) and at events in each state throughout the year. Life has been brimming in South Australia with numerous events for Channel 9’s Telethon and the Barossa Wickets for Wine Fundraisers. PCFASA has enjoyed the endorsement of numerous celebrities, heightening awareness for prostate cancer and supporting our cause.
Thank you and congratulations to all involved.

Shag Islet Cruising Yacht Club Shag Islet Cruising Yacht Club (SICYC) is a rapidly growing social network of cruising yachties and individuals who have a passion for the sea. The concept is to create a network of cruising yachties all with the same title of Vice Commodore and each representing a different location. In the often pretentious sailing world their club is “Exclusively non-exclusive”. Each year club members gather for a rendezvous on Shag Islet in the Gloucester Passage in the Whitsundays. SICYC co-founder Ken Thackeray said: “About 2,000 attended in 2013 and raised money for PCFA.” Gathering in festive season regalia the Club presented PCFA with a cheque for over $40,000.
Family Parks PCFA recently received a Charity Cheque from the Airport Tourist Village Melbourne. Family Parks General Manager, Karl Heyman said: “Family Parks are very proud to hand this cheque to the PCFA - a great effort by Australian and New Zealand Family Park delegates, saw the sum of $13,340 raised at our recent Family Parks conference.” Airport Tourist Village owner, Dominic Bressan stated: “We are proud of our involvement with the Family Parks chain and with those dedicated Family Parks operators who have made this presentation possible.”

RESEARCH
PCFA’s Research Program 2014 – What’s new? PCFA’s Research office has again been very busy this year. With generous support from Movember, Cancer Australia, Cure Cancer Australia Foundation and the help of our community, PCFA again funded competitive projects in all areas of the cancer journey, from prevention to diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. PCFA’s National Research Program received 52 stellar applications in the Young Investigator and New Concept Grant categories. Following rigorous peer review PCFA’s Research Advisory Committee (RAC) recommended funding for the top eight applications. Here are some of the successful projects from the 2013 funding round:
Dr Hayley Reynolds - University of Melbourne Advanced image analysis for prostate cancer using functional imaging and histopathology. Prostate cancer is a disease where multiple tumour deposits are often seen in the prostate gland. In this project, advanced image analysis and machine learning techniques will be developed and applied to co-registered histopathology and functional MR images to improve the understanding of prostate tumour location and biology. Ultimately this work will provide a framework for designing improved radiotherapy treatment plans for patients with prostate cancer.
Dr Qian (Kevin) Wang University of Sydney Developing novel therapeutics targeting amino acid transport to inhibit metastasis in advanced prostate cancer. Dr. Wang is studying the role of protein pumps that are highly expressed in metastatic prostate cancer. We have discovered that one of these protein pumps can increase
4
nutrient availability, enhancing growth and migration of the cancer. The pumps are present on the outside of cells, making them excellent candidates for drug targeting. Kevin aims to discover new drugs that block the nutrient flow of these pumps, starving the cancer cells.
Dr Shahneen Sandhu - University of Melbourne Poly(ADP-ribose) Polymerase Inhibitors in Patients with Advanced Prostate Cancer with Germline BRCA1 /2 Mutations and other DNA Repair Defects. Mutations in genes involved in repairing DNA such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 and others can result in development of prostate cancer. Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors have been shown to be an effective treatment for patients with inherited mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2. Shahneen plans to screen and treat prostate cancer patients, who have inherited mutations in DNA repair genes with a PARP inhibitor as part of a clinical trial. Dr. Sandhu hopes that this new class of drugs will be more effective and delay the progress of the disease. Dr Sandhu, a young oncologist at Peter MacCallum Research Institute in Melbourne, is the inaugural holder of The John Mills Young Investigator Award. This award was established in recognition of the outstanding contribution of Professor John Mills to
PCFA as Chairman of PCFA’s Research Program (2007-2013). The John Mills Young Investigator Award recognises and supports the career of an outstanding, young, clinician researcher that shows exceptional promise as a developing leader in the field of prostate cancer. Dr. Sandhu is funded jointly by PCFA and Cure Cancer Foundation of Australia.
Prof Matthew Watt Monash University Understanding how obesity causes prostate cancer progression. Of more than 3,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer each year, some will experience aggressive disease that requires immediate and invasive treatment. Obesity is one of the major risk factors that correlates with aggressive disease. This project will investigate the biological links between obesity and aggressive prostate cancer that will better inform the management of these patients.
Prof Kirill Alexandrov - University of Queensland Development of highly sensitive diagnostic test for active form of prostate specific antigen. Prostate cancer treatments are most effective when the cancer has been detected at an early stage. The currently used prostate cancer blood test relies on a single marker. The proposed research will use bio-

engineering to design ultrasensitive and inexpensive tests for prostate cancer, allowing much more in-depth analysis directly in the doctor’s office.
Dr John Miles Queensland Institute of Medical Research Isolating high-avidity prostate cancerspecific T cells using high definition allogenic pulldown. T cells are the sentries of our immune system. Their job is to scan our bodies and destroy anything dangerous. While T cells are very good at destroying pathogens (foreign) they are taught
not to attack our own cells (self). This training is called self-tolerance and it is a real problem in prostate cancer, where cells are derived from, and look like, normal cells. This project will attempt to bypass self-tolerance by reprogramming T cells to recognise cancer cells as foreign and very dangerous. The Research Program is currently finalising the details of the review of the applications submitted within the Movember Revolutionary Award Category 1 focusing on advanced prostate cancer. Successful applicants will be announced in the first quarter of 2014.
PCFA would like to recognise the Movember Foundation as a key funder of its National Research Program

AWARENESS
Pcfa Ambassador Program PCFA’s Ambassador Speakers program is an initiative to raise awareness about prostate cancer in the community. Ambassadors are community members who deliver a structured program in a variety of different settings.
T
hroughout 2013 the Ambassador program has had some fantastic achievements. PCFA would like to thank all involved for their hard work and support of the program over the past year. 2013 saw training held in all States and Territories for new and existing Ambassadors, with 130 Ambassadors currently out spreading awareness within their communities. The program has had many successes recently; presenting in workplaces, government agencies, at clubs and community centres nationwide. Reaching out to rural communities is a vital component of the program. PCFA Ambassador Malcolm Ellis, of Noarlunga Centre, SA, travelled to BHP Billiton’s Olympic Dam mine site in Roxby Downs, located in outback South Australia, to present on the importance of men’s health awareness to site workers. This presentation was a great way to target workers in rural areas, and the information was well-received by attendees. A helmet,

light and mining attire, Malcolm presented underground to BHP staff on prevention and early detection of prostate cancer. PCFA thanks BHP Billiton for their hospitality in hosting Malcolm. “I was very grateful for the opportunity to present at Roxby Downs, particularly underground as I have worked underground in gold mines in the past in the Northern Territory”, states Malcolm. PCFA plans to continue to expand and promote the program throughout 2014. If your workplace or organisation would like to host a speaker, or if you’re looking for more information, please contact Katie Dundas: ambassadors@pcfa.org.au
“It is important to get the prostate cancer message out to rural areas because more men are dying from the disease in rural areas than metropolitan. I felt very privileged to do this presentation and I am willing to go wherever needed to continue this work.” - Malcolm Ellis
Rural Education Roadshow The PCFA Rural Educational Roadshow is a program funded by the Australian Government to deliver education about prostate cancer management to regional and rural Australia. The program funds small teams of prostate cancer experts to travel Australia, delivering a structured educational program to the local health care professionals and the community. 2013 was a productive year for the Roadshow with 24 sessions held at 12 locations, visiting each State and Territory in Australia. This has meant the Roadshow has been able to be taken to over 300 GPs and health professionals in rural areas. In the last months of 2013 the Roadshow Project visited South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia. It has been pleasing to see so many new faces attending these sessions and the feedback received has been overwhelmingly positive.

HEALTH PROGRAMS & NURSING
Nurses Training Event 2013 In May 2012 the nurses attended a two day induction program to familiarise them with all aspects of prostate cancer care. It was a great success and PCFA has since continued to provide ongoing training for the nurses since this launch. training event for the Afurther nurses was held in Sydney on 26
and 27 November 2013. The main focus of the event was to provide the nurses with information on specialist practice in prostate cancer nursing. The event had workshops and sessions to provide specific training on medical advances and the current management of prostate cancer and a number of guest speakers from the industry. Each of the Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses presented at the event on a project they are working on. They explained how their service is progressing and how patients and families are benefiting from them and these services. It was not all work for the nurses; there were evening activities as well. The nursing team enjoyed a boat cruise around the harbour. On the second night we had the pleasure of being invited to attend the Movember Gala Party at Luna Park. It was a great opportunity for the nursing team to catch up together socially and a great way to finalise a successful two days.
8
PCFA extends Nursing Program The PCFA Prostate Specialist Nursing Service was launched in May 2012, with funding for the program coming from The Movember Foundation. The program has successfully placed 12 nurses in metropolitan and regional hospitals across Australia. The nurses have had a total of 5,732 patient related-contacts in the services first year helping many men who are affected by prostate cancer and their families. PCFA was very excited when the Australian Government announced that an additional $7 million would be granted to extend the program, enabling PCFA to place an additional 13 nurses across Australia. This will double the size of the existing program and will provide help to more Australian men in both metropolitan and regional areas. We are now in the process of recruiting the additional host sites, who will then in turn employ the nurses. The additional nurses will be placed by August 2014 and will be funded until June 2017. To find out more, please visit www.pcfa.org.au.
Tasmania Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses PCFA Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses are trained to work alongside medical teams like medical and radiation oncologists and urologists, to co-ordinate care plans and give men diagnosed with prostate cancer clear and accurate information, so they understand what is happening to them. Here we introduce the Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurses in Tasmania. Each nurse is employed by their host hospital to provide an expert nursing service to patients with prostate cancer attending each host centre for treatment.
Jennifer Siemsen
Ian Henderson
Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse, Launceston General Hospital, Tasmania
Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse, Royal Hobart Hospital, Tasmania
Jennifer works three days a week at Launceston. Her nursing background is in cancer care and she has worked in outpatient day unit as well as at the hospital in the home service. She was attracted to this position as she “finds nursing most rewarding when able to provide care for patients along the entire continuum of care”. Jennifer has a very keen interest in oncology and research and enjoys working with the multidisciplinary team.
Ian is employed in a part-time capacity at Royal Hobart. Ian has a background in a variety of clinical nursing areas, including Sexual Health co-ordinator in Alice Springs, college lecturer for Aboriginal health workers and running men’s health workshops.
Jennifer helps to co-ordinate and streamline care for men with prostate cancer, helping them navigate through the process of decision making and treatments. She provides men with a key point of contact and acts as an educator and support person. She has helped to establish links between patient’s home medical team and their treating centre.
He was attracted to this position because he believed there is a need to provide more support to men with prostate cancer and not just disease management. “I would like to build bridges with similar agencies and organisations to improve the care of those affected by prostate cancer.”, the Prostate Cancer Specialist Nurse states. Ian’s role is proving to be pivotal in increasing the education and support to those men diagnosed with prostate cancer.

SUPPORT
PCFA Support Network continues to grow As readers of Prostate News know, we received funding from Cancer Australia in 2011 to support men with prostate cancer through evidence based resources and support.
S
ince the star t of the Agreement we have established 55 new suppor t groups. 15 of these are specific purpose groups, including groups for gay/bisexual men (6), younger men (2), men with advanced prostate cancer (2), par tners and carers (4), and one group from our Greek speaking community. PCFA continues to explore how we can suppor t those affected by prostate cancer. Currently, only about five per cent (5%) of men with prostate cancer access our suppor t groups. Many, such as those who live in remote areas, find it difficult to access suppor t groups or prefer other ways of accessing suppor t, for example, through telephone or online suppor t. In 2014, we are continuing to grow the number of our suppor t groups, including establishing additional gay/bisexual groups in regional cities. We are hosting gay/bisexual men’s health forums in Canberra, Newcastle and Lismore between March and May 2014. These forums will talk about prostate cancer, the valuable suppor t
10
offered by PCFA’s suppor t groups, and identify par ticipants interested in forming a suppor t group. We are excited to have our very first support group from our culturally diverse communities, the Clayton Greek Cancer Support Group in Victoria. PCFA collaborated with the Australian Greek Welfare Society (AGWS) to share expertise and resources and to establish a support group. A forum held in August 2013 on the topic of “What is Cancer?”, attended by many of our network members in Victoria and Tasmania, had a positive response leading to the establishment of the group. This is a significant milestone for PCFA as it continues to develop information and support for our culturally and linguistically diverse communities.
PCFA is also engaging with the State-based Cancer Councils to look at how we can collaborate to develop accessible support for various communities, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
Exercise It is known that exercise can assist recovery from prostate cancer treatment and is helpful as an adjunct therapy to assist recovery from depression and anxiety. In South Australia, a support group is being developed with a focus on exercise after treatment offering peer support to each member and will be guided by a fully trained and qualified physiologist. As with any exercise after trauma, it is important to gain expert advice on what one can do to maximise recovery.
Telephone & Email Support The Blackwood Districts Support Group has been exploring ways to better support men and their families in their community. The Blackwood District comprises of several small townships and farming communities many kilometres apart, making it difficult to attend regular group meetings held in one location. The group is piloting telephone and email support with regular meetings in various locations across the regions. It is anticipated that this will ensure information and support is more easily accessed by people, whatever their circumstances.
Chapter Training Conferences Following a very successful inaugural National Training Conference in May 2013, PCFA is hosting five Chapter Training Conferences this year, the first of which will be held in Wagga Wagga for the NSW /ACT Chapter 29 and 30 March 2014. A key theme of the events is engaging with diversity in the different ways mentioned above. Chapter-based Support and Outreach Co-ordinators are working with the Chapter Councils
to deliver what we hope will be five very successful events. These events are a great opportunity for members to connect with and support each other, and further develop their knowledge and skills in facilitating support groups. Three support group training modules, approved by Cancer Australia, will be delivered by PCFA staff. A number of guest speakers are also being organised for each event. Keep an eye out for the call for registration for these events throughout the year.
Katie Rowe, Administrative Assistant Support Network, also joined our team on the 21 January 2014. She has primary responsibility for working with the Chapterbased Support and Outreach Coordinators and Chapter Councils for the planning of the Chapter Training Conferences. Katie is an experienced event coordinator, bringing strong administrative skills.
New Staff We have a number of changes to our support network staff team: Marie-Claire Cheron-Sauer was appointed as Director, Support Network, commencing on 25 November 2013. Marie-Claire has a background in social work, policy and management, having worked previously in a number of roles in government and not for profit organisations. Matt Jones replaces Carla Demos as Operations Administrative Officer for the Support Network. Matt joined us on the 21 January 2014. Matt comes from the United States and has worked in administration in a number of organisations.

Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride PCFA was lucky to be the beneficiary charity for the highly regarded Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride in 2013. The event was a motorcycle ride that took place in over 110 cities worldwide on 29 September 2013. The ride is all about dapper, classic bikes, laughter and creating awareness for men’s health issues while raising funds for PCFA. A truly outstanding $250,000 was raised. This will support a New Concept Grant funding Dr John Miles research into reprogramming T cells to recognise cancer cells as foreign and very dangerous, and destroy them. We are extremely grateful to Mark Hawwa and his committee in producing such an outstanding event and for choosing PCFA as their charity of choice again in 2014.

Partnerships Golf Fore A Cause
PCFA is excited to announce that we have been chosen along with National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF) as the charities which will benefit from a three year partnership with Drummond Golf. Drummond Golf will be raising funds with the support of customers, franchisees, business partners and charity golf days.
Kicking goals for Prostate Cancer
PCFA is again thrilled to be named as a charity partner of Melbourne Victory. This partnership is into its second year, with the Victory dedicating a home game on 29 March 2014 to raise awareness of prostate cancer. Against longtime rivals, Sydney FC, this game is known as the “Big Blue”. Victory supporters have traditionally provided near capacity crowds for home games at AAMI Park and hopefully on the night this will be no exception with the crowd to be a sea of blue.
Go the Blue Dog
PCFA is proud to announce an exciting partnership with Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), not only to raise vital funds for research, but also prompt awareness through metro, rural and regional Victoria. This will occur through GRV’s normal racing program, with additional assistance through the provision of their extensive facilities and the Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP). We have also been lucky enough to secure the number 4 rug (blue) in a number of races to assist awareness campaigns. Together with the McGrath Foundation, PCFA will be the charity of choice for the next two years and we look forward to a fruitful and rewarding association.
Know Your Score
Western Australia Football Commission (WAFC) has partnered with PCFA to dedicate a WA Football League Round to prostate cancer. In 2014 this will be Round 12 held on 14 June 2014 to coincide with Men’s Health Week. All WAFL games played in this round will be dedicated to raising awareness of prostate cancer. Players will wear blue arm bands to honour those men who have lost their lives to prostate cancer and 280 blue balloons will be released into the air at the beginning of each game to honour those men in WA who have died from this disease. This round will be called the ‘Know Your Score!’ round, encouraging men to be proactive about their health. It’s a call to action for men to talk to their doctor about testing for prostate cancer as part of their annual health check.
Waratahs Rugby
We are excited to announce that the NSW Waratahs have chosen PCFA as one of their seven charity partners in 2014. Waratahs Rugby CEO Jason Allen says: “Our aim for this new charity partnership program is to build on this and provide a platform for rugby to make a real difference to a number of communities across NSW. We are very proud and privileged to work alongside these partners, whose work is already making an incredible difference to the lives of so many people in NSW. We’re also really excited by some of the ideas and initiatives that are already in the pipeline for 2014.”
