The Dreams We Dream Together To My Family It was bitter cold on the darkest night And the wind swept through the town There was screaming in the labor room And nurses all around With your big round eyes and solemn face You were light as a feather The dreams we dream together The dreams we dream together The city of blocks had people there I remember now their names In Middletown Grimbledy Trimble And his friends all still remain As the nights ran by the story grew As deep and dark as a river The dreams we dream together The dreams we dream together The children appeared on the field one day It was a bright September morn They found adventure waiting there And a brand new world was born It was a world I knew and could share with you And wish could live forever The dreams we dream together The dreams we dream together Could we build a city there On that field so wide Made of people not of things A city all outside That all who heard could see it there With life that lives forever The dreams we dream together The dreams we dream together

Episode 1

A NEW BEGINNING Back home in Middletown, Phoebe couldn’t sleep. Her knee ached. She couldn’t get comfortable. It had been a hot night even for June, when suddenly the coolness of the forest air began to drift in through the half opened window. The wind had changed. The odor of the Forest Preserve, just beyond the field across the street, began to permeate everything, smelling of leaves and pine needles and some flower Phoebe couldn’t name. The tension of a coming storm filled the air. Excited and scared, she lay in the darkness, her energy rushing and bubbling inside her like a river in flood. Phoebe knew she was taking a big risk. A series of knee injuries had ended her soccer career and she had decided to drop out of college, leaving her with almost no life to lead. She had come home without achievements and without prospects. But she did have a plan, though it was a long shot. The possibility of empty weeks stretching on ahead set her on the edge of panic. She sat up and glanced at the vague gray shapes in the bleak and empty room. A bit of silvery light filtered in through the window. Two bulging 30-gallon black garbage bags full of her clothes and shoes, and her backpack full of books and small treasures, lay in the middle of the floor where she had left them an hour before. She didn’t have the heart to unpack. The great unknown stretched out before her like an endless shadowy darkness. She tried to relax, but fear and excitement raced through her veins. A distant roll of thunder sounded deep in the heart of the forest. The wind was rising, and the leaves trembled in the breeze. Phoebe fell into a daze, still aware of the cool wind on her bare feet, the wind whistling outside the window, and the panic rising from deep inside.

Episode 2

ON A DAY I SEE COMING As Phoebe lay there half-asleep, the sound of the wind seemed to carry a melody, a strange and mournful song. She imagined a procession coming toward her in the night, like a communication from some distant land. The song came closer and closer. She began to understand the words. On a day I see coming Tell you where I’ll be With all of you in sorrow Beneath the ancient tree Then tell me there’s a chance for us Let me hear you say We can find a bridge to cross There must be a way When there seems no tomorrow For the life that we’ve known I’ll take your hand in sorrow We won’t be alone Then tell me there’s a chance for us Let me hear you say We can find a bridge to cross There must be a way Phoebe had an overwhelming impression that the song was intended for her personally. What can it mean? she wondered. Someone was coming in search of her. Suddenly she was stunned by a shattering crash, a roll of thunder that seemed to vibrate through the window. A flash of light glinted on a pair of eyes pressed up against the windowpane. “Wake up!” roared a voice out of the darkness. Phoebe could feel her entire body shaking. She had the vivid sensation that she was lying on the skin of the earth, feeling the pulsing of life beneath her. “This is for you!” pleaded the voice. “Look at me.” 1

THE EVERYTHING DREAM

Episode 3

THE EVERYTHING DREAM Against the window she saw a hand – dark green with a silvery shimmer, like the scales of a fish. There were leaves on the body as if the creature had risen from the ground. The eyes met hers with a greenish glint. “This is for you! Your time is coming! You must remember what I say.” An enormous clap of thunder shook the window. The Green Being pushed against the glass. The piercing stare was unspeakably sad, yet fierce, and urgent, begging her to understand. Phoebe found that she could speak: “What? What is for me?” she asked. “Everything is at stake.” The voice was now hushed. “Everything.” She tried to stand up and run, but found herself blocked by thick pine trees in a dark forest. The rain streamed down her face. “Where am I?” she called out. A violent gust of wind bent the trees, and branches moved like snakes in the air. She could barely see a tunnel through the forest, a path of some kind, and struggled toward the opening. Soon she could make out a building she would know anywhere. The toy store! It’s still there! And the coffee shop! Her eyes filled with tears of relief. And from out of nowhere the eyes appeared again before her. The voice shook the earth: “Everything is at stake! Everything!” Thunder cracked outside the window. Phoebe sat up with a start. Her feet were wet with the rain blowing through the screen. She sat blinking in the darkness, fingering the good luck charm on her necklace and breathing in gasps. My God. What could that be?” she was thinking. Thunder burst again, but far away. She felt the overwhelming power of her dream, as if someone had given her a direction, a vital mission, something only she could do. Then she fell into a deep sleep.

Episode 4

PHOEBE’S SISTER WARNS HER ABOUT DREAMSTONE Phoebe awoke to a delicious warm breeze wafting in through the open window, and sat up in the light of the morning. The strange power of her dream came back in a flood. She thought about the Green Being, and looked out the window at the vast woods and the Half Moon Cliffs in the distance. This view had been a presence in her life as long as she could remember, always visible from the window of her bedroom in the loft over the toy store. She thought of her parents – who had sold the store the year before, and were now living in the greenhouse at the garden center. Phoebe limped down the stairs and joined her sister Penny on the little porch just outside the kitchen door. The warm air smelled of baking bread. “So…” said Phoebe. “I notice almost none of Mom’s stuff is left in the room.” “You know she’s back with Dad,” Penny said. “Now they’re out in the forest. She’s painting landscapes. I think she couldn’t get anything done living at the store…” Any thought of the loss of the toy store stung Phoebe like a wasp, but she didn’t want to quarrel. She took in the beautiful morning, and saw a row of huge, multi-color tomatoes lined up on the wooden railing. “Whoa! Is Dad growing tomatoes like those?” “Sammy sells them at the coffee shop now,” Penny replied. “But look, Phoebe, things around here have changed. You’ve got to be careful. The source of these vegetables is a secret. And your dreamstone charm… keep it tucked under your shirt. People are asking a lot of questions. Especially here in Middletown.” “About what?” asked Phoebe, suddenly very alert. “This sounds interesting.” “Even small pieces are worth a fortune,” replied Penny. “But it’s complicated. Don’t get involved. You’re going back to college anyway.” “Not this year,” returned Phoebe. “Without soccer I’m kind of lost there.” “What happened to Environmental Studies? Weren’t you on a mission?” “I wish I was.” They heard footsteps crossing the gravel driveway from the house next door, and in a moment an older woman in a long navy blue skirt walked up to the porch. 5

Episode 5

A CONVERSATION AND A WALK TO TOWN “Dr Bear!” Phoebe called out in surprise. “You can call me Geraldine,” said the new visitor with a smile. “I’m your next door neighbor now… I do hope I’m not interrupting.” “Not at all,” returned Penny. “Have a little breakfast and it will be time for church.” Phoebe’s mind filled with memories of being cared for by Dr. Bear following her various soccer injuries. Geraldine smiled at Phoebe again and said, “I’m so glad to see you back in Middletown! And speaking as a friend and a doctor, how’s your knee doing?” “Mmm, that’s been hard. I’m on a sort of mandatory rest cure. No sports for months, exercises, knee brace…” “Sounds like good advice to me,” said Geraldine. “You know, when we heard you were coming we planned a welcome home party, right here in the backyard.” “And it’s coming up this Friday,” added Penny. “Pretend it’s a surprise.” “Oh… I don’t know.” Phoebe hesitated. “Please, just something small.” She appreciated Geraldine’s support, but didn’t feel ready for the attention. “This will be a big morning for our church,” Geraldine told Phoebe. “Reverend Tuck’s finally going to present the church’s commitment on climate change. There’s sure to be controversy. He needs our support.” Phoebe knew and liked Reverend Tuck from years of meetings of her parents’ conservation group, the Protectors of the Wood. But that morning she had other things on her mind. She was thinking about her dream, and the promise she’d made to ask for a job at the toy store. So as soon as Penny and Geraldine were gone, Phoebe limped upstairs and put on the neatest jeans and shirt she could find. In a moment she was on her way up Main Street toward town. What’s my strategy with Gilligan? wondered Phoebe. David Gilligan was the uncle of Phoebe’s ex-boyfriend George, and the current owner of the toy store. Thinking frantically, she hit Bridge Avenue, took a left, and walked up toward the toy store and the church.

Episode 6

WHAT HAPPENED IN TOWN Phoebe moved up Bridge Avenue in her speed-limp. No one seemed to recognize her, and she felt like a ghost. The storefronts on her left were all unfamiliar. A whole new façade had been installed over a long area. What’s this? It’s all Scutter’s Gourmet Foods! It’s tripled in size! With her fists clenched in anxiety she skipped in her odd fashion to the toy store across the street, but looking up she saw a padlock on the front gate. She started to head home when she noticed Sammy through the glass door of his coffee shop. He didn’t seem to have changed at all, with his kind face, thin white hair, and old-style white apron. He had run his coffee shop since long before she was born. “So how are you?” He beamed a wide smile as he served her a cup of coffee. “Well, I injured my knee twice, and can’t play soccer anymore. I’m looking for something to do. So what’s with Scutter’s?” “Oh ho! Something called investors. The Geddon Insurance Group, Morphy’s outfit, is moving in. We need you back in this town.” “The Geddon Insurance Group…” muttered Phoebe. “What’s that?” “Bad news for Middletown. They’re after every property they can find.” Phoebe was suddenly silent, thinking about the toy store next door. Sammy noticed her fear. “Give this some time,” he said. “You’ll help us.” She put a dollar on the counter. “I sure hope so,” she said. As she spun her stool to head for the door her glance fell on the wide shelves of plywood and chicken wire covering the back wall of the store. “Now that’s new,” she observed. “That’s right,” returned Sammy. “I’m selling a few local groceries now. I take some of Scutter’s business and help out my friends at the same time.” Tacked to one shelf was a poster board sign, featuring an image of a tree with the words, WORLD TREE BREADS AND MUFFINS. “That must be my sister’s shelf!” She nodded with approval. “Good for her! But I get the feeling I shouldn’t ask about the vegetables.” “The less said the better,” he replied, looking her in the eye.

Episode 7

REVEREND TUCK SPEAKS HIS HEART OUT “By the way,” Phoebe asked Sammy. “What’s up at the church today?” Sammy opened his eyes wide and stared at her. “I should be there myself, but it’s too painful to see Tuck trying to reason with people who won’t listen.” “I’m going to check it out,” she replied. “And it’s great to see you! I’ll be back.” Phoebe walked up the sidewalk just in time to see a stream of people spill out of the church. Many voices were laughing and cursing. Phoebe caught a few words. “He’s a fool,” remarked a short, pudgy man in a dark suit. “So much for his proposal!” He ripped a sheet of paper and let it drift to the sidewalk. “Him and a few others,” added a tall thin man. “They must be defeated! Do you hear me? Defeated! It’s time to take their pieces off the board.” The two men walked off together. Phoebe pocketed the torn sheet of paper. With great curiosity she speed-limped across the street to the church door. At that moment Tuck was preaching in a loud, clear voice: “This is the good news! God loves the world! Every kind of life is precious, every species has a place in God’s eyes. We – even you and I – are called upon to be the faithful stewards of life on earth. And it must be said that it is a sin to wipe out thousands of species of plants and animals every year the way we do. And if we do not change, the payment will be the lives of our children and children’s children.” Tuck’s voice suddenly exploded: “WE MUST CHANGE! WE MUST CHANGE! My dear brothers and sisters, look at the stakes! Soon the stakes will include everything we know and hold dear.” Phoebe felt her heart thumping loudly inside her. The voice from her dream rang through her head: Everything is at stake! Everything! Tuck bowed his head. “Let us pray. Dear God, help us to treasure and nourish the world You have created. One human alone does not make a life. The entire community of humans, and of all species, make the life that God has made. Amen.” Phoebe slid quietly out of the pew and out the door into the glaring sunlight. Whoa! That really cuts deep! But how on earth can we tackle such a huge problem?

THE EVERYTHING DREAM

Episode 8

UNEXPECTED FRIENDS As Phoebe walked home from church she could not get Reverend Tuck’s words out of her mind. She pulled the ripped sheet of paper from her pocket. The two pieces formed a letter from Reverend Tuck asking the congregation to approve a resolution making the stewardship of life on earth a central mission and calling of the church at this time. Phoebe realized that she desperately needed a friend to talk to. She thought of Glenda and her daughter Tiny, who lived nearby in a cottage at the edge of the forest. She limped up a small lane and knocked on Glenda’s door. Glenda and Abby -- a classmate of theirs from high school – were sitting at a coffee table with cups and plates. Four-year old Tiny sat on the floor among toys and children’s books. They soon realized they had all just returned from church. Phoebe said she was surprised that Reverend Tuck had given such a passionate sermon. “He’s been building up to it for months,” explained Glenda. “It was kind of scary,” said Phoebe. “I was outside when a group of angry people walked out. One of them called Tuck a fool who must be defeated. Why would he say that? What does Tuck think we should be doing about climate change?” “Well, it’s not something that can be fixed in a few weeks,” replied Abby sarcastically. “You’ll be leaving town to go back to college.” “Well, actually, I dropped out of college, and I can’t play sports anymore.” “I’m so sorry,” said Glenda. “I’d heard about that, and should have asked you.” “No, it’s okay,” Phoebe hurried to reply. “I’d like to get a job for awhile.” “Well then, maybe we can do something after all,” Abby said. “Let me know if you’ve got any ideas,” offered Phoebe. “Maybe we could work together, form a team...” She held her breath, afraid they would think it a silly idea. “I want to be a part of something like that,” declared Abby. She looked at Phoebe as if she were offering a challenge. “And those people who walked out of church today, I might know some of them. These problems might be…” she took a deep breath, “very close to home.”

THE EVERYTHING DREAM

Episode 9

ABBY DISAPPEARS INTO THE FOREST During a silence in their conversation Glenda looked at her watch and said, “Oh! We’re due at Ellen’s house for Tiny’s play date with Kayla! But before we go I want to ask a favor. Could one of you go with me to Teacher’s College tomorrow? I want to enroll in some courses and can never get up the nerve to do it.” Phoebe was all too aware that she would have nothing to do tomorrow. The toy store was closed on Mondays. “I’ll go,” she replied. “I wish I could join you,” Abby said, “but I’m trying to see if my new idea works out.” Phoebe wanted to ask about Abby’s idea, but didn’t dare. “Okay, then it’s decided,” said Glenda with excitement. As Phoebe carried a tray of coffee cups to the sink she noticed the fascinating size and colors of a few tomatoes ripening on the windowsill. They look just like the ones on Penny’s porch, thought Phoebe. Soon they were out the door. Abby left on her bike. Phoebe walked home and sat on the front steps, realizing that she knew very little about Abby’s life. Phoebe recalled that in high school Abby seemed interested in things no one else understood or cared about. She did achieve some recognition by creating a small heirloom apple orchard in the school courtyard. But one September some students started a riot by picking apples and throwing them at each other across the courtyard, making a colossal mess. Phoebe remembered seeing Abby sobbing in a corner alone. She had gone over to her and said, “The trees are still a good thing that you did.” Abby had looked up with her eyes full of pain and said, “I’m so tired of being angry.” Phoebe could not get Abby off her mind, and decided to find a way to become friends with her. Suddenly she saw Abby coming back up Main Street on her bike. She turned left toward Glenda’s house. But near the end of the lane, Abby rode over the field toward the forest. She looked back toward Phoebe and waved, and then disappeared among the trees. “Whoa…” thought Phoebe. “Where could she be going?”

THE EVERYTHING DREAM

Episode 10

PHOEBE MEETS JEREMY FOR THE FIRST TIME The following morning Phoebe joined Glenda in her kitchen. She was scurrying around preparing sandwiches. “I can’t wait to taste one of those tomatoes,” said Phoebe. “Where do you get them?” “Oh… ah…” Glenda didn’t know what to say. They stared at each other in confusion. I should have seen this coming, thought Phoebe. There’s something secret about these vegetables, and Abby must be a part of it. “Oh, maybe Abby has a garden,” Phoebe replied casually. “You’ve got to be careful talking about Abby,” said Glenda in a low voice. “But yes, she has a garden somewhere near that old abandoned house.” They piled into the pick up truck and headed toward the highway. Near the intersection Glenda pulled into her brother Jim’s gas station. Phoebe and Tiny were buying sodas from the vending machine when a teenager walked in from the garage, wearing an odd little reddish jacket and jeans tight at the ankle. His hands were dark with automobile grease. “Jeremy!” screamed Tiny, and leaped into his arms. “No!” he yelled, but had to catch Tiny with both hands, leaving dark grease marks on Tiny’s pale tee shirt. He looked up at Phoebe in embarrassment. “I’m always making a mess of things,” he said. “I thought I was the one doing that,” she told him. “I’m Phoebe.” “Nice to meet you. I’m Jeremy. Can’t shake hands.” “That’s okay. Working with Jim?” “Yeah, I’m his cousin.” Tiny, suddenly still, watched with intense interest. “Here for a while?” asked Phoebe. Jeremy looked up with hope in his eyes. “I’d like to stay. I really would.” “Why don’t you then?” Suddenly Jim swung the door open to say that Glenda was ready to go.

Episode 11

NOTHING FOR ANYONE TO DO In the morning Phoebe walked to the gas station to chat with Jim and Jeremy and find out some news. “So glad to see you!” cried Jim. “I was just feeling a little bored. With Jeremy working on the cars I’ve got some time on my hands.” As if on cue the young man in the faded red jacket and tight jeans appeared at the inside door to the garage. “Here he is,” said Jim. “The artist at fixing car engines.” Jeremy looked down and seemed embarrassed by the attention. “So…” said Jim, looking at Phoebe. “I hear you’re leaving school. What’s next?” “Well…” She hesitated. “I’m not sure what I can do…” “Oh, come on!” Jim exclaimed. “We all know what you can do – should do, in fact. Gilligan has no idea how to run that store. Unless he hires you he hasn’t a chance.” Phoebe looked up in surprise and said, “I’m afraid he won’t see it that way.” “Have you asked him yet?” came Jeremy’s soft voice all of a sudden. “You know,” returned Phoebe, “I’ve just been waiting for a little push. Thanks! I’m going to do it.” Casting her fears aside, she set out for the toy store. Gilligan was sitting behind the counter reading a book. The store was empty of customers. Uh oh… she thought. There’s nothing for anyone to do. “Well,” she managed to say, “I…would like to work here.” “I see,” said Gilligan. “And what would you like to do?” “I could bring in customers and sell things, and organize activities for children. I could create summer and winter carnivals and a Halloween fair.” “That’s…very nice,” said Gilligan. “But business is a little slow. I’ll give it some thought.” His eyes returned to his book. “We’ll talk about it some other time then.” Phoebe realized she had been dismissed. In this very room where she had once been a queen, she was now a beggar. How could I have been so stupid! she asked herself. He didn’t even invite me in! She turned and limped out the door.

THE EVERYTHING DREAM

Episode 12

PHOEBE HEADS TOWARD THE FOREST Phoebe limped blindly down the sidewalk, hardly aware of her surroundings. At Main Street, instead of turning right to head home, she continued down Bridge Avenue toward the forest. Maybe it would be dark and secluded there. She didn’t want to go home. She didn’t want to see anyone. At the Half Moon Bridge, an old two-lane bridge with continuous sidewalks, she stopped her angry flight. Gilligan’s not going to help me. What am I going to do now? Phoebe of course knew that she might not get the job, but – as hard as she tried -- could never find any motivation for a plan B. She had spent her whole childhood living and working in the toy store, as if it were the community center of Middletown. She longed to show what she could do there now, as her current self, nearly an adult. Even soccer couldn’t compete with this relentless passion. She tried to peer into the future, but could see nothing. No toy store, no soccer, no college. What could she do? How could she face everyone? People would know that Gilligan had turned her down, and they would try to comfort her. It would be unbearable. She walked out on the bridge and leaned against the railing, looking down into the black water gliding by. The Half Moon River was up near the high water mark, tearing along at the roots of the trees growing out of the steep bank. Gradually her feelings settled into a dull ache. Then she looked further down the road toward the forest, and remembered the old abandoned house. Phoebe knew it from childhood, when her friends had called it the haunted house. Glenda had said that Abby had a garden near there. Phoebe remembered Abby challenging her about climate change and ‘doing something to help Reverend Tuck’. Could Abby possibly be living there? Could she be there, even right now? Suddenly these thoughts drew all her attention, and she decided to find Abby and talk to her. Phoebe limped down the road into wilder country. The streetlights and a few small houses and trailers were soon left behind. A sign appeared that said, “Dead End”, followed by a dirt road. She limped onward into the forest. 21

THE EVERYTHING DREAM

Episode 13

PHOEBE AND ABBY Phoebe found Abby’s bicycle tracks in the mud, and followed them behind the abandoned house. When she looked up, there was Abby down the slope at the edge of the forest. They drank tea together at Abby’s campsite near the stream. “How do you get by out here?” Phoebe asked. “I get along,” replied Abby, “but I still want a place to live in town.” “What’s holding you back?” “Maybe we can help each other,” replied Abby, sliding closer to Phoebe, “if you’re careful enough.” “I can be careful,” Phoebe said. “Do you really mean that?” asked Abby. “Even if you’re not sure why? Because you’re not going to find out everything all at once. There’s a lot to learn.” “I’ll do it,” declared Phoebe. “You can trust me.” “Okay. I’ll start by showing you my garden. Don’t let this turn out to be a mistake.” Phoebe followed Abby across the stream and through pine trees on rising ground. She struggled to keep up, limping through the dense forest. Eventually they crawled through a bank of overgrown brambles with sharp thorns, and then stood on a little peninsula of land jutting out over the swamp. Beyond rose the sheer rocky face of the Half Moon Cliffs. Abby led the way around this piece of land sealed off by the wall of thorns and vines. An overwhelming variety of vegetables gleamed in the bright sun. Tall red plants and fruit trees waved in the breeze. “I’m planning to sell some stuff in town,” Abby said. “I thought maybe you were selling at the coffee shop,” Phoebe replied. “Sammy won’t buy from me. None of them trust me.” “Let’s help each other,” Phoebe offered. “We’ll make a pact that… I don’t know… We’ll figure this out together.” Abby’s face softened. “That would help. At Glenda’s I saw you were serious. I’m going to need help. And so are you.”

THE EVERYTHING DREAM

Episode 14

THE BLACK ARROW Phoebe limped home slowly. Her knee ached. As she entered her sister yelled, “Phoebe! Mom and Dad are back. We’re invited to the greenhouse for dinner.” They walked together to the long greenhouse behind the garden center. Their parents – Peter and Patti Hood – met them at the door. A profusion of flowers, small trees, and hanging plants served to hide the greenhouse windows. A huge painting by Patti covered the far side of the room. Peter sat near a table and picked up a wooden figure with wings. He carved these toys like a strange addiction. “So what’s your plan, now that you’re back in Middletown?” he asked. Phoebe could hardly find words, but finally said, “Sammy says these new investors are trying to buy everything… But what about the toy store?” “Ah! You see the problem already. The Morphy organization is moving in, and Gilligan’s not making money. He might sell, and I don’t know what we can do.” “So you and Mom have are staying out in the forest…” probed Phoebe. “Can I jump in here?” her mother asked. “Remember Wendy?” “How could I forget? She cured my bronchitis over and over.” Patti gestured toward her huge painting. “Long ago, this part of the forest -called Hidden Valley -- was owned by Wendy’s grandfather. Part of the family is still alive and living there, remaining hidden all these years, growing their own food and living surprisingly well. They are related to the Half Moon Valley People, who farmed the land from here to the sea long ago. They are the center of the Protectors of the Wood, our private foundation that supports the forest. We are really working with them. Be aware! These are secrets many would like to know.” Peter’s best friend, Chi Chi, joined them before dinner. They invited Phoebe to shoot a few arrows in the archery range on the far side of the greenhouse. Drawing an arrow from the quiver, Phoebe noticed that it was black. “Only Chi Chi makes those,” Peter said. “We keep them in the forest.” “It’s our sign,” explained Chi Chi. “The sign of our project.” Phoebe studied the black arrow for a moment. The Protectors of the Wood had just risen to the top of her list of things to learn more about.

THE EVERYTHING DREAM

Episode 15

A DREAMSTONE VISION AND NEWS ABOUT ABBY The following day Phoebe’s father showed her his garden hidden in the field of fir trees. She took the opportunity to reveal a secret memory: “When I was little I saw a stone on the table in your room. I looked in the smooth blue part…” “And what happened?” Peter stared at his daughter. “I’ve wondered all these years.” “The Good Fairy hovered over me. She glowed, and she stretched out her wand. The light from her star came shining down.” “Ah!” Peter exclaimed. “I should have asked you long ago! You’ve seen Her, one of the guiding visions of dreamstone. I had no idea… That was a small stone, usually too small produce visions. You have a talent! Something the world needs right now.” “But where does dreamstone come from? Why wasn’t it around before?” “Remember Wendy’s aunt, Teresa?” He replied. “A very old woman now. She owns the only known source of dreamstone, up in the North Ridge Mountains.” Peter thought for a moment and then said, “Do you want your own role in this – this project, this big game we’re in?” “Yes, I do. But I already asked Gilligan for a job. He didn’t even invite me in.” “I hope you try again. You know how important that store is. Think it over.” “I will. And there’s something else… This girl from high school showed me her garden. It’s like this one, with these new vegetables and trees. Her name’s Abby.” Peter’s eyes widened. “Really now!” he exclaimed. “You must be talking about Abby Chapman. She’s Wendy’s niece, and they’re close. Her great grandfather helped work the apple farm in Hidden Valley long ago, and was with the family when a mob burned their house and they all went into hiding. That was over seventy years ago, but many have not forgotten. And Abby has a boyfriend from the Morphy clan, a family whose grandfather helped burn that house in Hidden Valley.” I can’t believe I didn’t know this! thought Phoebe in shock. No wonder Sammy won’t buy her vegetables! They’re afraid someone will pry Abby’s secrets out of her. “I hate putting a burden on you,” Peter went on, “but any way you can protect her from those who would exploit her… Do you see what you’ve stumbled into?”

THE GREEN CAR

Episode 16

PHOEBE WORRIES LATE AT NIGHT That night Phoebe sat up late by her open window, thinking over the events of the last few days. She realized she had taken on responsibilities, but had no idea how to fulfill them. She wanted to save the toy store, but that seemed very unlikely; she had already been turned away. Her father had asked her to help Abby and protect the secrets of the forest, but she didn’t know what kind of help Abby needed, or even what the secrets of the forest really were. And to top it off, she apparently had an important ability – a sensitivity to dreamstone – that she didn’t understand at all. She remembered her conversation with her sister over breakfast. What did Penny say? ‘Even small pieces of dreamstone are worth a fortune. And people are asking questions here in Middletown.’ Why especially here? Who is asking questions? Nobody explains these things. The whole problem was very disorienting. After living in Middletown almost her whole life, Phoebe now felt like a stranger. She couldn’t enter the toy store without feeling unwanted, and her mother’s painting of the town and the forest was full of places she’d never seen. And the whole area had a fascinating and frightening history she had never heard of before. She realized that these new seeds and plants represented a heritage that had been forced to go underground, hidden deep in the forest. And dreamstone, an almost magical and incomprehensible wild card, was somehow a part of that heritage. And Abby was a part of that world, now coming to light as a source of hope amidst the tragedy of climate change. The Protectors of the Wood had to be connected to these things. And she, Phoebe, was a part of it too. But what could she really do to help? She wanted to so badly it was painful. She quietly climbed out of bed and peered down the hallway. The rest of the house was dark and hushed. Her sister had long ago fallen asleep. Phoebe tiptoed down the stairs and out on the front steps. The moon would be full in a day or two, and was now high and bright above the forest and the cliffs. She gazed across her own wild wood and listened carefully, trying to hear the river in the distance. It’s a wonderful world, she said to herself. What can I do?

THE GREEN CAR

Episode 17

THE TREASURES IN CHI CHI’S SHED The following morning Glenda drove her daughter Tiny, Phoebe, and Penny to Sammy’s Coffee Shop to buy some of the amazing new vegetables for the coming backyard party. Sammy’s shelves were bare, so they continued on to Chi Chi’s shed behind the greenhouse. “Come in, come in,” he said in a voice that vibrated with excitement. “I knew these treasures would cause a stir, so I’ll present them to you here in privacy.” Chi Chi began to unpack the bags, laying out in the light of the window bundles of basil, arugula and cilantro, peas bursting in their shells, blackberries each over an inch long, bags of finger beans and lemon cukes, a pile of the colossal tomatoes, and maybe forty ears of corn the size of a man’s forearm. The smells, the colors, the sizes and shapes were overpowering. Chi Chi rolled a lemon cuke back and forth between his hands, sliced off the top, and reached across the table to hand it to Tiny. “For you, my dear,” he said with a bow. Glenda smiled as Tiny slurped down the thick lemony liquid. “The first corn of the season!” Penny said in awe. “How do you get them so early? People will talk.” “Don’t worry,” replied Chi Chi. “The farms have been using the new seeds. In two weeks they will flood the town with all of this. Then let everyone talk.” Phoebe watched carefully as Penny stared, her eyes sparkling. “Now just for this occasion,” Chi Chi went on, “knowing who will be attending, I’ll show you something special.” He emptied two more bags, one of wet burlap that spilled silvery fish amid crushed ice glistening onto the table, and another paper bag that Chi Chi turned on its side. Out rolled dozens of small mushrooms with white stems and darkly veined caps like small pointed brains. “Chi Chi! You outdo yourself!” gasped Penny. He smiled gleefully and rubbed his hands together. “Surely the occasion calls for something special? It is a bit expensive though… and don’t forget to be quiet about this little exchange.” Chi Chi bowed his head and they bowed in return.

THE GREEN CAR

Episode 18

THE SCENE AT SCUTTER’S MARKET Carrying many bags, they all returned to the truck. Glenda put the old standard transmission into gear. “Where to?” she asked. “Our next stop will be more boring,” Penny told them. “Just Scutter’s Market.” Deep in the enormous store, as they piled juice into a cart, they were surprised to hear a loud argument coming from the back office. An indignant male voice shouted, “But I’m the buyer! You’ve got to tell me the source of these goods!” To Phoebe’s shock, Abby suddenly appeared, moving quickly into view while speaking back over her shoulder. “You don’t own me,” she said coldly. As Abby hurried by her eyes met Phoebe’s for a moment of recognition, and she was gone. Scutter quickly followed Abby up the aisle, trying to make himself heard without attracting attention. “I’m sorry,” he pleaded. “Please understand…” But Abby continued walking out of the store without a backward glance, and Scutter was left standing at the sliding door. Seeing Penny approaching, he tried to smile and said, “Good to see you, Penny. Rumor has it that you’re having a party.” Penny was staring into space, her face white as a sheet. “Everything okay?” asked Scutter, frowning. Penny’s eyes focused. “Of course. And please come by tomorrow evening.” At that moment a very tall, thin older man in a dark suit walked up the aisle and said, “There you are, Scutter. A quick word privately if I may.” “I saw that man a few days ago,’ said Phoebe in a low voice. “Milton Morphy,” whispered Penny. “So that’s him.” Phoebe just mouthed the words. As Glenda began to unload the containers she looked at the young cashier and exclaimed, “George! I didn’t know you worked here. Aren’t you over at the toy store?” “Oh, Gilligan doesn’t have enough business…” George muttered. Then he noticed Phoebe behind Glenda. “Phoebe!” he cried. “I heard you were coming back.” “Hi George, I’ve missed you…” She could find no more words.

Episode 19

ON THE DIRT ROAD AT THE HAUNTED HOUSE On the way home a cloud of gloom seemed to settle over them all. “I want Abby to come back,” announced Tiny suddenly. Her high, wavering voice broke the silence in the crowded truck. “Can we help Abby to come back?” “Of course we can,” returned Glenda, but no one could offer a suggestion. After a quick lunch Phoebe sat on the front steps. There’s no getting around it, she thought. Abby must have tried selling her vegetables to Scutter. What will keep those Morphy men from coming after every piece of information she may know? I promised Dad I’d try. I promised Abby I’d help her. Now it’s time to do something. Phoebe set off down Main Street with all the speed she could manage. In less than an hour she was in the forest near the abandoned house. As she followed the curve of the road she suddenly saw an old green car a short distance ahead, facing the rusted gate marking the end of the dirt road. She heard a word or two of a man’s voice, and silently crawled under the long pine branches at the side of the road. The voices became louder. “But Will! Why does he want her?” “How do I know? He just said, find her and bring her.” “Yeah. But what if we had found her? What if she didn’t want to go?” “I told you! He said ‘persuade her’. That’s your job.” Phoebe could see the old work boots and jeans of the two men standing by the car. “My job! I don’t even know what he wants with her!” “You’re not supposed to know. Just make something up, Marcus. She likes you.” “You mean lie to her, trap her!” came the angry reply. “You don’t have to see it that way, and you’d better keep those thoughts to yourself,” warned the other voice. “They want that girl bad.” In seconds the car puttered slowly by, making a strange rhythmic clicking noise. Phoebe could feel her heart thumping against the ground beneath her.

THE GREEN CAR

Episode 20

THE ROAD TO THE TOY STORE Phoebe lay still for what seemed like a long time. On the way back she thought of avoiding the road, but the forest seemed thick, dark, and without a path. So she walked carefully near the trees, stopping and peeking around every bend. Soon she reached the top of a slope where she could see all the way to the Half Moon Bridge, and up the hill into town. The green car was nowhere in sight. It was clear that the men had not found Abby. She was probably somewhere in the forest. But Phoebe’s adrenaline was still pumping. She longed to do something good, to accomplish something. As she approached Main Street she decided that the time had come to pay Gilligan a visit. In what seemed less than a second, Phoebe stood in the courtyard of the toy store. She took a deep breath and swung open the door. Her head was as empty as the open sky. Once again Gilligan was sitting by the cash register reading a book. “Hi,” said Phoebe. “I’m… I’m ready for work.” She thought her voice sounded very loud, as if someone else was speaking in her place. “To tell you the truth,” replied Gilligan, “I’ve thought it over, and we don’t have enough customers now. Maybe we can talk about it again in a couple of months.” “A couple of months!” Phoebe stared at him in disbelief. “I can help you bring in customers, you know!” Gilligan looked down in embarrassment and said, “I’m sorry, but we don’t have much money.” Phoebe continued to stare at him in mounting anger. “Well! If the store were more interesting, more people would come in!” Gilligan finally looked back and shouted, “We can’t all be like your parents!” She took in this new side of Gilligan. “I didn’t mean to snap,” she said. “It’s just that I have my heart set on it. Let me try it for a week. I’ll work for free.” Gilligan sighed. “Well… indeed, that’s hard to refuse. I really do need help.” And so Phoebe got to work, feeling almost as if she were dreaming.

Episode 21

JEREMY MEETS GEORGE The following day Phoebe was working at the toy store when Jeremy arrived in the tow truck to borrow tables and chairs for the big evening party. Phoebe and Jeremy were loading up the tables when George approached them from across the street. “Congratulations on your new job!” said George. “I’m so glad to hear it!” Wow, she thought, he’s not mad, even though he lost the job. She gave George a smile and a quick survey. He looked good in dark jeans and a short-sleeved button-down shirt. He smiled in a charming way, but his voice was hesitant, and there was something in his eyes that seemed sad. A few moments went by where they just stared at each other. Jeremy was standing next to Phoebe and nudged her with his elbow. She grabbed the opportunity to introduce him as if it were a life preserver in the open ocean. Jeremy and George shook hands and smiled. “So what are you guys up to?” asked George. “I’m on my lunch hour.” “We’re carrying tables to my truck for tonight’s party,” returned Jeremy. “Need help?” offered George. “By the way, nice wheels! You fixed it up yourself?” “I did,” nodded Jeremy, accepting the admiration of a small crowd that had gathered. “You know,” he continued, “my cousin mentioned someone named George who plays guitar. Any chance that’s you?” “You play?” cried George. They looked at each other in a new light, and slapped hands. “I’m in between bands,” said George with enthusiasm. “College and jobs broke us up. Let’s get together!” Phoebe stared at them hitting it off with mixed feelings. It was hard to be ignored. She felt as if George was stealing Jeremy away from her, in no time at all. Or was it that Jeremy was stealing George away? She could hardly be sure, except that she felt out in the cold. And to top it off, she was the one on the clock with a boss inside.

THE GREEN CAR

Episode 22

ABBY IN DANGER Late that evening at the backyard party, Phoebe overheard Scutter talking to a drunken stranger in a baseball cap: “I tell you some of this food is the same as Abby’s! What are those cucumber things the kids are drinking? Have you noticed? They’re drinking them! You’ve got to find Abby!” Scutter’s voice rose in frustration. Phoebe retreated into the shadows, and finally saw Abby, Glenda, George, and Jeremy talking behind the next-door garage. She warned them, and they decided to leave immediately. On the way out the man in the baseball cap lurched in front of Abby and peered into her face. “I thought it was you!” came the jarringly loud voice. “Where have you been?” “I don’t have to talk to you,” said Abby coldly. She tried to walk around him, but the man moved to block her way. Phoebe stepped between them, and the man shoved her aside. George and Jeremy stepped in and the man raised his fist to strike. “Mitch! That’s enough!” yelled Scutter frantically. In no time a ring of people surrounded the scene. The crowd wavered, unsure what to do. Suddenly Chief Santiago walked slowly into the circle. Abby and Glenda were slowly backing down the driveway. Chief Santiago carefully watched every movement as if reading a script. “I hope no one is disturbing the peace, gentlemen,” he said. “You’re not bothering these girls, are you Mitch? I wouldn’t like that. What are you doing here, anyway? Were you invited?” “He’s a friend of mine,” offered Scutter. “He’s just had one too many.” “Get him home,” said the chief, with a hint of menace in his voice. Meanwhile Abby turned quickly and ran across the street into the field. “Wait!” Glenda yelled. “Abbyyy! Wait for us!” They came together on the lane under the glimmering moonlight. “It’s no good,” whispered Abby. “I’ve got to go. They’ll come looking.” “We’ll stay with you,” declared George. “We’ll stick together.” She stared at George. “I’m glad you said that. I’ll remember.” And immediately she disappeared into the shadows. 41

Episode 23

A LETTER FROM ABBY A few days later Phoebe organized a painting session for Rose and Rob’s new pre-school class, with Tiny among them. During the session Glenda came up behind Phoebe and spoke softly in her ear. “There’s something I want to show you,” she said, “if you get a spare couple of minutes.” As the children and parents were ready to leave, Glenda suddenly put an envelope into Phoebe’s hand. Phoebe retreated to the back room and read: Dear Glenda: I just wanted you to know that I’m fine and not to worry. I can’t visit because I don’t want anyone bothering you, so don’t expect me. I really need to find a safe place to live. I wonder if Phoebe could help me live at the toy store. Her family all used to live there. Another idea I have is maybe I could live at the church. Do you think Reverend Tuck ever has anyone live there? Please speak to Phoebe, and let her know anything that could help me. I will visit her at the toy store in a few days. I’m fine where I am but I can’t stay here forever. I’ll try everything I can. I believe that somehow help will come for me. Thanks for being there when I’ve needed you most. Your friend, Abby Chapman Phoebe scanned the letter and thought, Thank God! At least she’s okay. Then she read it slowly a second time, and the details began to sink in. It’s like she needs a bodyguard to walk around! This is worse than I thought. Anger boiled up inside Phoebe, and her responsibilities hit her with a shock. It’s up to me now. She found Glenda and Tiny in the book corner, and handed back the letter. “Walk me to the truck,” said Glenda. On the way, as Tiny skipped up the sidewalk, Glenda said, “Someone’s been watching my house. A pudgy guy, maybe a teenager or a little older. He waits behind the trees on the other side of the field.” “Should we get Chief Santiago on it?” asked Phoebe. “Or do you want us to do…” “Do nothing!” interrupted Glenda. “My strategy is to let them look! I’m out of this now. It’s just something I thought you should know.” Phoebe nodded. “I’m on my daughter’s side before anything else,” Glenda declared. 43

Episode 24

A TEAM OF DETECTIVES The following evening Jeremy met Phoebe to discuss the mysteries that surrounded them in Middletown. They took a long walk on the quiet streets under the trees. As the night fell the moon rose. Phoebe explained Abby’s surprising letter, and Scutter’s obsession with finding the source of the vegetables. “I think I know,” Jeremy replied, “the place where these new vegetables come from.” “Jeremy!” exclaimed Phoebe in surprise. “How did you find that out?” “I’m pretty good at exploring the woods, and I’ve discovered a secret zone in the forest, a place you can’t get to. Some sort of genius has spent years disguising it. I’ll take you there on you’re next day off – this Monday.” “I’ll come!” replied Phoebe. “But let’s concentrate on Abby for a minute.” “I’d like to know why these men are after her,” returned Jeremy. “These new fruits and vegetables are fabulous, but there’s got to be more to it…” The moon was shining over fields of apple trees, their twisted and strangely human branches making shadows on the grass. Jeremy smiled. “I was hoping we could talk this way,” he said. “Let me ask you one more thing. I told George I was going to speak to you about all this, and he’d like to be in on it too.” “Why didn’t he talk to me himself?” responded Phoebe. There was an edge to her voice. “Phoebe, you might be a little hard to talk to sometimes.” “Look, we’re not going to solve this problem tonight.” “I see,” replied Jeremy. “What do you mean by that?” she asked, surprised by her own angry tone. “It’s been going on a long time,” answered Jeremy. “It may be hard to fix.” “Is that okay?” “Yeah, it’s okay.” But all Phoebe’s instincts told a different story. Something was clearly not okay. She sighed to herself in the dark.

A TEAM OF DETECTIVES

Episode 25

THE QUEST FOR HIDDEN VALLEY Early Monday morning Phoebe and Jeremy set off hiking through the swamp toward the Half Moon Cliffs, and the forest beyond. They both treasured high hopes of reaching the secret zone that Jeremy had seen once before from a distance. In the back of her mind, Phoebe hoped to find Abby, and understand the strange mysteries that surrounded her life. Jeremy moved with the focus and alertness of a forest animal. By noon they reached the Half Moon Cliffs, a giant wall of rock that seemed to Phoebe a hopeless barrier blocking their path. But Jeremy led the way to the far side of an enormous gray boulder, and rolled a tall thin stone out of a crack between the boulder and the cliff. Phoebe stared with her mouth open. “We go in there??” After a long dark climb up a narrow split in the vast wall of the cliff, the light gradually improved until the wall to their left was only about eight feet high. Phoebe struggled slowly on her bad knee, one step at a time. Jeremy waited for her in a cozy little spot, hidden as if they were in a nest of stones. He brought out a bottle of water. As they passed it back and forth he said, “I’ve been afraid to ask you something. Were you mad when I mentioned that George and I are planning the concert at the coffee shop?” “Oh…” she sighed. “Let’s not go into that. It’s not your fault.” “But you don’t need to feel bad. There’s nothing to feel bad about.” “Some things aren’t so easy,” answered Phoebe. They were both silent. “Come on, Jeremy,” she said. “Let’s put that aside.” “You’re right. Let’s get moving.” They came out into the open on a ledge about four feet wide. Phoebe took one glance out at the wide valley below and was overwhelmed by the sight. “Phoebe…” said Jeremy slowly. “This next piece is dangerous. It’s not hard if you follow everything I do, but you can’t, absolutely can’t, make a mistake.” He watched her carefully. “We don’t have to do it,” he said. “I’m fine with going back.”

Episode 26

HIDDEN VALLEY Phoebe looked at the ledge ahead of her. It appeared to be a safe path if she just stayed away from the edge. “I’m ready,” she said. “Let’s go.” “Stay on all fours,” said Jeremy. “Follow everything I do.” Phoebe took one glance out at the wide valley, and was rendered dizzy by the sight. Don’t look down, she told herself. God in heaven, a person could die here! Her knee brace became a dangerous hindrance during this part of the climb. She had to drag her right leg as she crawled. Gradually the cliff became more horizontal, and finally they lay panting on level ground. “You did it!” exclaimed Jeremy. “I’d overlooked your brace in planning this climb. I was more scared than you.” We’re up here with the hawks and vultures! How am I going to get down that thing? It was late afternoon by the time Phoebe and Jeremy climbed up a long ledge of stones and small trees. They came to a high, sharp ridge running ahead of them like a crossroads. Picking their way up over some rocks, they finally stood at the top the enormous wall of rock and pine trees. An incredible view opened up ahead of them. They saw a narrow valley roll forward like a long green road bounded by rocky hills and ridges. Its velvety green texture glowed like jewel in the afternoon sun. “Hidden Valley,” said Phoebe. “You found it! But how do we get down there?” “I don’t know,” Jeremy replied. “I can’t find a way forward from here.” Phoebe could see the steep cliff just a few feet away, and felt a sharp sting of disappointment. Suddenly a new voice appeared out of nowhere, saying, “I’m here to guide you!” Phoebe turned and stared. “Chi Chi!” she cried. “Where did you come from?” “I’ve known you were on your way for quite a while. You’re invited in! We are bidden to hurry. Follow me…”

A TEAM OF DETECTIVES

Episode 27

THE MYSTERY OF THE CAVES Chi Chi led Phoebe and Jeremy back down the ridge to a dark doorway into the rocky cliff, fully concealed by mountain laurel. They proceeded by candlelight to an underground stream, and finally emerged into the sunlight under a grove of willow trees. Chi Chi hurried them on across the beautiful valley to another concealed entrance into a long wall of rock, and showed them an enormous room with sunlight coming through an opening in the ceiling. They saw a stone fireplace flickering with small flames. Nearby an old man with keen gray eyes sat in a carved wooden chair almost like a throne. His wrinkled face was framed by long white hair. “Father,” said Chi Chi with a slight bow. “I’ve brought Phoebe and Jeremy.” “Wonderful! Thank you all for taking this trouble for an old man who does not get out to see the world.” After some introductions, the old man told them, “I will come right to the point. A group of us are carrying this treasure, this life’s work, and we have reached a stage where we must hand our hopes to the next generation. And behold! You find us – here on our mysterious island in the midst of the modern world.” Phoebe and Jeremy said they were honored to be there. “Then with your permission,” said the old man, “we will take a step today. You, Jeremy, will begin to learn from Charles the duties of a Protector.” Jeremy followed Chi Chi to a wall displaying a map of Hidden Valley and the caves beneath. Meanwhile the old man told Phoebe, “I’m trusting you with a dangerous secret.” He led the way to very small doorway lying back in the shadows. Phoebe followed him into a narrow tunnel, slanting downward deep into the earth. Soon the old man rolled a large stone a couple of feet to reveal a dark opening. “This way,” he said. Phoebe felt as if the earth were squeezing in upon her. “Look out for your head,” came the old man’s muffled voice. “You’ll have to crawl.” “Crawl? No, no!!” Terror filled her like boiling water. “I’m afraid!” she cried. “I am too,” he replied, “though I’ve been here a thousand times.” They crawled forward…

Episode 28

THE SECRET OF DREAMSTONE The old man and Phoebe crawled downhill through the tunnel. A breeze smelling of water wafted by. The rocks in the wall were large and glistening, with silver streaks glowing in the darkness. The tunnel grew wider and higher, and the old man rose, and walked normally ahead of Phoebe. She stood and loped ahead to catch up. Soon they entered a vast cavern. The light of the old man’s candle found hundreds of tiny mirrors in the crystals in the far off walls and ceiling, and created a moving and changing light of many colors. It seemed that the night sky and the magic of the stars were also here, deep inside the earth. The sight gave Phoebe an overwhelming sense of relief, a feeling that this adventure was going to reach its goal. “Come over here,” said the old man, and pointed to a couple of old wooden crates. “Take a seat and compose yourself.” Phoebe had never been so tired, but her mind was on fire. “You wear a piece of dreamstone,” he said, “your own charm made here in this room. Would you like to look into a large piece? There is some risk. Not everyone is ready for the challenge or the burden that may come of it . . . Would you like to look?” “Yes,” answered Phoebe. Her thoughts were racing. “Dreamstone!” she said to herself. It comes from here! This is what people are hunting for! This is the secret my family is hiding from me! He lit three new candles, and the light blazed up like the sun. She realized that the wall ahead of her was covered by a large curtain of thick, dark material. “Are you ready?” asked the old man. She stared ahead, noticing the dim blackness of the heavy fabric. “I hope so,” she said. He took the curtain off the wall. The candlelight gleamed on a colossal jewel of dreamstone as large as a church door. One smooth blue surface occupied the central area. It trembled and moved like a living thing, and opened into a measureless depth.

PHOEBE COMES HOME

Episode 29

PHOEBE’S DREAMSTONE VISION Phoebe looked deeply, and began to flow into the stone, as if she were swimming in the deep blue sky. She found herself in the sky far above Middletown. The sun was setting behind her. She glided down lower, attracted by the sight of her high school soccer fields. The players were gone, and shadows covered the wide fields of grass and dirt. Phoebe noticed a dark spot on the edge. Walking in the fading light she could see a hole, a large circle of darkness maybe eight or ten feet across. “I never saw this before,” she thought in shock. “Someone could get hurt.” The hole had sides of dirt and stones with roots sticking out, but no visible bottom. Her heart jumped as she saw a flicker of light on a reddish hand. A figure climbed out over the edge and began walking over the grass. Small and bent over, it appeared to be an old woman. Long gray hair spilled over what might have been a dress, but a dress reduced to rags. Phoebe ran after her, desperate to offer help. “Hello, are you okay? Is there anything I can do?” The woman turned, and Phoebe saw a light shining like stars from her dark eyes. “Then follow me,” the woman said. Phoebe tried to keep up as the woman walked down a side street. Soon Phoebe realized she had lost her in the darkness. A black shape moved in the shadows. She jumped back, her heart pounding. “Phoebe?” came a familiar voice. “Abby?” They embraced in relief. “Quick,” said Abby, “she’s gone this way.” They ran down the dark avenue, heading toward the forest. Around the bend they came to the edge of the clearing, and the haunted house arose ahead of them. It too was glowing, but with a pale, flickering light. On the lawn pale shapes were whispering and laughing, with a terrifying undertone of fear and anger. There were hundreds of them. The voices became menacing. Just ahead the old woman moved forward. With all her being Phoebe wanted to follow. She fought against the rage and took a step.

Suddenly hands gripped her shoulders. She found herself standing back in the cavern. The old man stood before her and looked into her eyes. “I’m here,” he said gently. “Come back, it’s okay.” “Oh!” Phoebe cried. “The old woman! She said to follow her! Please. . . was that the woman they call Her?” “Yes, that’s Her, our leader in this great struggle, the crisis of our time. We have a leader when we need one the most, a champion for the earth.” He put his hand on her shoulder. Somehow it was a formal gesture, like a blessing, a sword on the shoulder conferring knighthood. Phoebe hardly noticed the way back, or her exhaustion, or her fears at all. She focused on following the old man, and on treasuring a feeling in her heart. She felt that no fear could be greater than what she had overcome already. Soon she was back in the great room, and it was nighttime. Her parents and Jeremy were there, and she knew her eyes were shining. Chi Chi brought her tea, and she sat by the fire. Her father came and sat near her. He was fighting back tears. “Phoebe, I’m so sorry I had to…to lie like that. I wasn’t sure you were ready. That story about the mine in the North Ridge Mountains… it’s been an elaborate hoax for decades, a way to protect the truth.” “It’s okay. I understand, I really do.” After a quick meal Phoebe was falling asleep. She had never been so tired When she opened her eyes again she saw an old woman in a neat dark dress, her gray hair pulled back from her forehead. Her luminous eyes were staring at Phoebe. “Oh!” Phoebe exclaimed, startled by the resemblance to Her. “Are you no longer a dream? Are you really here?” “Now, now, dear…” came the singsong old voice. “It’s ooonly meee, Wendyyy. We’re old friends.” Phoebe stared back in surprise. Completely unembarrassed, Wendy continued to examine her carefully. “Sooo… I see you’ve grown up. Yesss… I’m so happy! And now Abby’s friend! Isn’t fate kind!” The old woman leaned forward and touched her lips to Phoebe’s cheek. “There there, you need the sleep. Close your little eyes. Fear nothing.”
