was born and raised in Providence, R.I. He grew up with and understands the culture of Providence College Basketball. Thus, when he was named head coach of the Friars on March 23, 2011, Friar fans felt like they had reason to believe that Athletic Director Bob Driscoll and College President Father Brian Shanley O.P. had found the person to lead the program to new heights while restoring the passion and pride in Friartown. He will do that with a team that works hard and plays defense. At his introductory press conference, Cooley made a strong impression on Friar fans. “Not only do I believe we are going to win here, but we are going to win big,” Cooley said. “It’s a privilege to come here and play college basketball. As we build that character base and as our squad learns to understand values, we will build this program into something our fan base will be proud of. I want to have every college coach in the country say, ‘man I wish my team was like that.’” Cooley enters his first season with the task of rebuilding the Friar roster. The biggest loss in the off season was senior Marshon Brooks. Brooks had one of the greatest seasons in the history of Friar Basketball. The 6-5 guard was a scoring machine as his 24.6 ppg average led the Big East and ranked second in the nation. He was the only player in the nation to average more than 24 points and seven rebounds per game. Brooks dropped a league record 52 points on No. 9 Notre Dame on February 23, 2011 and set a league record as he scored 468 points in Big East play. He finished his career ranked ninth all-time in scoring at Providence with 1,629 points. For his efforts, he became the first Friar since Ryan Gomes in 2004 to earn Associated Press All-America accolades. He also was named First team All-Big East, an ECAC First Team All-star and a finalist for the John R. Wooden Award. All this helped Brooks become the first Friar since Austin Croshere to be selected in the first round of the NBA Draft. Brooks was picked 25th overall by the Celtics and then traded to the New Jersey Nets. With the loss of Brooks, Coach Cooley will be looking for returning starters junior Vincent Council (Brooklyn, N.Y.), junior Bilal Dixon (Jersey City, N.J.), sophomore Gerard Coleman (Boston, Mass.) and sophomore Kadeem Batts (Powder Springs, Ga.) to lead the way. The Friars also have sophomores Ron Giplaye (Lowell, Mass.), Bryce Cotton (Tucson, Ariz.) and Lee Goldsbrough (Newcastle, England) returning. Redshirt freshman Brice Kofane (Yaounde, Cameroon) also has spent a season at Providence and returns to the team this year. Joining the returnees will be newcomers, freshmen Kiwi Gardner (Oakland, California) and LaDontae Henton (Lansing, Michigan). Gardener and Henton will fill roles at the point guard and forward positions, respectively.

2011-2012

The

Backcourt Head Coach Ed Cooley is fortunate that he has a veteran leading his backcourt this season. In just two seasons, junior Vincent Council, has gained valuable experience, starting 40 of the 63 games he has played, including all 32 last season. Council was relied upon to run the point in each of his first two seasons. He averaged 36.2 minutes per game last season and 27.6 minutes per game as a freshman. He has seen a lot of action and will be ready to guide the Friars this season. He is the teams’ top returning scorer. He averaged 13.7 points last season. He led the team in assists. His 5.9 assists per game average also led the Big East. Council recorded five or more assists in 22 of the 32 games in 2010-11. Sophomore Gerard Coleman had a strong freshman season for the Friars. The slashing wing/guard averaged 10.2 points and 3.1 rebounds while starting the 29 of the 31 games he played. He recorded a career high 19 points in a 72-67 upset over No. 19 Louisville on January 22, 2011. His athleticism and scoring ability will be important to the team. Sophomore Bryce Cotton came off the bench as a freshman and saw action in 31 games. Cotton, who is very athletic, averaged 4.0 points and 1.5 rebounds per game as a rookie. With a small roster this season Coach Cooley will be looking for all his players to contribute. Freshman point guard Kiwi Gardner will need to make an impact on both ends of the court this season. The 5-foot-10-inch, 165 pound guard put up impressive numbers last season at Westwind Prep (Ariz.). He averaged 23.7 points, 7.0 assists, 4.0 steals and four rebounds, leading Westwind to a 30-2 season and a state title. Prior to attending Westwind Prep, Gardner spent three seasons at Manteca High School. As a junior in 2010, he averaged 24 points, 3.8 assists, 3.9 rebounds and 3.5 steals as he helped the Buffaloes register a 23-6 mark. He re-

34

corded an impressive 41-point, 10-rebound, eight-assist and four-steal performance as a junior in an 89-75 win over Weston Ranch. As a sophomore he also had a strong season, as Manteca finished with a 24-4 mark. Gardner averaged 19.8 points, 6.0 assists, 2.1 rebounds and 2.2 steals per game. Gardner has great speed with the basketball that enables him to get to the basket. He also plays tenacious defense.

The

Front Court The Friar front court will be led by a pair of 6-9 forwards. Junior Bi l a l Di xon a n d s o p h o m o re Kadeem Batts bring a lot of experience to the court. Dixon, who is a redshirt junior, is entering his fourth year at Providence College. He has started 61 of the 63 games he has played during his first two seasons. As a rookie he was named to the Sporting News Big East All-Freshman Team in 2010. Over his two seasons of action he is averaging 6.9 points and 6.6 rebounds per game. The team will need his rebounding ability in the always physical Big East. Like Dixon, Batts also spent a season as a redshirt improving his skills. Batts is entering his second year at Providence. The 2010-11 season was his first year of action. He started all 32 games for the Friars, and averaged 7.1 points and 5.8 rebounds. Batts registered two double-doubles last season, including an impressive 19-point, 11-rebound effort at USF on January 16, 2011. Batts can play the physical game down low and step out to the perimeter and hit jump shots. Sophomores Ron Giplaye and Lee Goldsbrough came off the bench last season for the Friar front court. Giplaye has the ability to rebound and play a physical game of basketball. The 6-foot-6-inch, 230-pound forward saw action in 27 games in 2010-11. Goldsbrough, a native of Newcastle, England, saw limited action last season appearing in 18 games. The 6-foot-9-inch forward can play on the perimeter and hit the three point shot. Rounding out the returnees to the front court is freshman Brice Kofane. Kofane, who practiced with the team last season, used the 2010-11 campaign as a redshirt season. The

6-foot-8-inch Kofane is athletic and active on the boards. The Friars will need his energy this season. A native of Cameroon, Kofane attended the Miller School in Charlottesville, Va. In his final season at The Miller School, Kofane averaged 12.1 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.2 blocked shots. Kofane has a knack for blocking shots and creating opportunities around the basket. The lone newcomer to the front cour t will be freshman LaDontae Henton. The 6-foot-6-inch, 220 pound forward had an impressive career at Eastern High School in Lansing, Michigan. Henton, who was mid-Michigan’s first four-time All-State selection since 2000, scored 2,000 points in 90 career games at Eastern High School. He averaged 22.2 points per game for his career and is one of only 33 players in Michigan High School Association history to score 2,000 or more points. He also is just the fourth player from mid-Michigan to score 2,000 points, joining Marcus Taylor (2,448 points), Earvin Johnson (2,012 points) and Zane Gay (2,004 points). Henton also was impressive on the boards, grabbing 1,210 career rebounds, which ranks fourth all time in the history of the state. Henton never averaged fewer than 14.5 rebounds per game in a season. In four seasons, he paced Eastern High School to a 62-28 record. In 2011, Henton averaged 25.2 points, 14.5 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 3.1 blocks and 2.2 steals per game while helping his team post an 18-7 mark and capturing the district title. He scored 20 or more points 18 times and 30 or more points in six games. Henton also recorded a double-double in 19 of 20 regular season games, including a triple-double of 39 points, 19 rebounds and 11 blocks versus Saginaw Arthur Hill. For his efforts, Henton was Michigan’s Class A Player of the Year, the Lansing State Journal Player of the Year for the second consecutive season and runner-up for Michigan’s Mr. Basketball.

Overview Head Coach Ed Cooley brings a new passion and attitude to Friar basketball this season. “We will be the most physical and toughest team that people have seen in a long time,” Cooley said. “It will be like a dictatorship defensively. Offensively, it’s a lot of democracy. On defense you cannot make a mistake. You make a mistake you become a $54,000 cheerleader and if you’re a cheerleader too long you become an old player. I want the best defensive team in the country every night. And if you can play defense, you’ll win championships and that’s why I’m here.” With the loss of Marshon Brooks to the NBA, Cooley will be looking for some experienced players to step up and fill the void on offense. Vincent Council has displayed over two seasons that he has the ability to run the point in the highly competitive Big East. He also can score and will need to increase his production this season. Talented sophomore Gerard Coleman had a strong rookie season. In addition to his offensive abilities, Coleman can be a defensive leader for the team. Bryce Cotton and newcomer Kiwi Gardner will both look to contribute this season in the backcourt. Bilal Dixon and Kadeem Batts will bring experience and size to the front court. Their ability to defend and rebound will be integral to the team’s success. Ron Giplaye, Lee Goldsbrough and Brice Kofane have experienced the Big East and will need to provide depth and balance on both ends of the court. Newcomer LaDontae Henton may need to adjust quickly to the college game as the team has a small roster this season. Fans are excited about new Friar Head Coach Ed Cooley and the brand of basketball that he promises to bring to Providence College. With this excitement coupled with returning veterans and several talented newcomers, the Friars could be one of the surprise squads in the Big East this season.
