“FIESTA MEXICANA!” was the theme of Providence Care’s 13th Annual Founders’ Dinner on Saturday, March 24 at Ban Righ Hall, Queen’s University. Organized by our fundraising entity, University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF), the event was supported by many attendees! As the keynote speaker, Dr. David Goldbloom, Chair of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, spoke candidly on the subject of mental illness and stigma.

Dale Kenney and Mark Hurst (CEO, North Bay Regional Health Centre): Dale and members of the Senior Leadership Team made the drive to North Bay earlier this month, to tour their new hospital and learn from their redevelopment experience. North Bay brought together their general hospital and long term mental health care centre into a new facility, which opened in 2011. For pictures from the visit, check out our Redevelopment Blog.
Providence Care’s Spiritual Health Dept partnered with the Southeastern Ontario Regional Ethics Network (SOREN) and KGH to host a panel discussion on mental illness and stigma on March 28. Panelists included: Dr. Heather Stuart from Queen’s University, Mae Squires from Kingston General Hospital, and Karin Carmichael from Providence Care.
Deb Matthews (in yellow jacket), Minister for Health and Long-Term Care, visited Kingston and Providence Care at the beginning of April. Minister Matthews was in town to help celebrate the completion of Phase 1 of the KGH redevelopment project, however she stopped by Mental Health Services to speak with a SE LHIN committee meeting in our Boardroom. The committee includes board members from health care providers from across the region, and looks at ways of strengthening connections across the local health continuum. Providence Care is represented on the committee by David Moore, a Vice-Chair on our Board of Directors.
Staff Forums were held at our three main facilities in April. Updates and announcements were provided to staff on items such as redevelopment, staff scheduling, budget, and date of our Staff & Family Day in June. All Forums were well attended.

Providence Care is embarking on an exciting venture in bringing together the services and programs of St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital and Mental Health Services into one new hospital. Combining rehabilitation, complex continuing care, palliative care, geriatric services and specialized mental health care into one facility is no small undertaking. The requirements of this vast range of services are many and all must be appropriately addressed in the planning, design and building of the new hospital. To guide and assist in this huge process a Redevelopment Team has been formed and taken up office at our Mental Health Services location. Each of the three members of the team belongs to the Project Management Team (PMT) who will guide the new hospital project and act as advisors on policy. They also have their own specific roles within the Redevelopment Team:
Director: Michael Ross “As Director, I oversee the new hospital redevelopment project,” says Michael Ross. “It will come under my role to ensure our objectives are met regarding planning, design, budget, timeframes, etc. and to provide progress reports to senior leadership and Ted Darby, VP of Joint Planning for Providence Care, Kingston General Hospital and Hotel Dieu Hospital.” Michael also acts as Providence Care’s liaison with Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health on a project director level.
Clinical Coordinator: Maureen McGuire Maureen’s main focus is working with various clinical groups to identify frontline clinical needs. She will maintain critical communication links between the
Redevelopment Team and our clinical programs. As Clinical lead, Maureen will help guide the work of the recently established Best Practice Research Group and the Clinical User Groups as these groups work with the design consultants to ensure clinical needs are met appropriately and Ministry of Health requirements are met.
Project Coordinator: Ted Splinter Ted acts as the day-to-day project coordinator. He also works with our user groups, focusing more on support groups such as Infection Control, Health & Safety, Materiel Management, Information Services, etc. to guide the process of identifying their specific needs in the new hospital. He will maintain communication links between the Redevelopment Team and these user groups. During the construction phase, Ted will also act on the hospital’s

behalf for coordination of site activities with the construction team. The team welcomed Marie Turnbull April 24th as Administrative Assistant for the team. They will also receive communications assistance from Jessica Herbison, Communications Officer Redevelopment Specialist, with the Communications Department. As the new hospital project progresses, Redevelopment Team members’ roles will change accordingly. Keep informed of progress on our redevelopment blog and watch for further articles in Connections.
