A RHODE WELL TRAVELED
With the hustle and bustle of today’s fast-paced world, it can be a challenge to stay calm and centered. There’s one thing that can help keep stress at bay. And no, I’m not talking about yoga or meditation, although I am a fan of both of those. I’m talking taking time out to do something fun — whether it’s solo, with your significant other, or with your squad. With that in mind, I have three terrif local places and things to enjoy. SAINT MONDAY Open since the end of September, Saint Monday on West Fountain Street in Providence is the place to check out right now. Coffee house by day and bar by night, this funky yet cozy space is the perfect hangout for a mid-week coffee date with your beloved or a Thirsty Thursday, Friday, or Saturday with your besties. PERFECTLY NAILED I’ve had a lot of pedicures in my time, but none that incorporated organic green coffee and vodka. Not until this year. The first step of this somewhat surprising, but totally relaxing, treatment is an epsom salt, vanilla oil, & vodka soak. Yes, vodka! The lovely people at Perfectly Nailed tell me it’s a great natural antiseptic that helps break down anything yucky that might be lurking in cracked heels or elsewhere on your footsies. Next is exfoliation with a scrub from JAVA skincare (They’re Rhody based by the way.) that’s made with super clean ingredients (like that green coffee), followed by hot towels, and then a massage with the JAVA serum. And my feet never looked (or felt) better! THE FARMER’S DAUGHTER One of prettiest places around has gotta be The Farmer’s Daughter in South Kingstown, especially during the Holidays! Motor over to scope out the delightfully decorated greenhouses, stroll the festive grounds, and then maybe pick up a beautiful wreath for your front door or a few ornaments for the tree.

CLASSIC, RELIABLE AND ICONIC: THE ROLEX DATEJUST AND DAY-DATE Rolex has a reputation for making watches that last a lifetime, so it is fitting that the company’s classic favorites are models emphasizing the date. The Day-Date and the Datejust are the most prestigious watches in the Rolex Oyster Perpetual collection, and they represent the summit of Rolex’s watchmaking capabilities. The main feature the two models have in common is the iconic date window at 3 o’clock, which changes instantaneously at midnight in a few thousandths of a second and is covered by the Cyclops lens for easy reading. Both are Rolex-certified Superlative Chronometers, a criteria established by the brand in the late 1950s, setting a new standard of excellence for mechanical watches. This certification applies to the fully assembled watch, after casing the movement, guaranteeing superlative performance on the wrist in terms of precision, power reserve, waterproofness, and self-winding. These tests complement the standard set by the Swiss Chronometer rating institute, known as the COSC certification of the movements.

THE PRESTIGIOUS
ICON And of course, both models are housed in a sturdy Oyster case, the world’s first waterproof watch case, invented in 1926. Today’s Datejust and Day-Date pieces are water resistant to 100 meters (approximately 330 feet). The cases are edged with the model’s signature fine fluting and are screwed down with a special tool exclusive to authorized Rolex watchmakers, allowing them that to access the movement. All movements are made in-house by Rolex — including all components, even the hairsprings — using proprietary materials and alloys. The Day-Date contains the automatic caliber 3155 or 3255 (depending on size), a new-generation movement with superior precision and shock resistance. It incorporates the Chronergy escapement patented by Rolex, made of nickel-phosphorus, which is insensitive to magnetic interference. The DayDate has one of the few calendar displays in watchmaking that fully spells out the day of the week, and it is available in 26 languages. Both day and date change simultaneously and instantaneously. While some Rolex models are available in steel, the Day-Date is available only in 18k gold or platinum, a reflection of its prestige within the collection. The Datejust is available in 18k gold, platinum, or Oystersteel, Rolex’s proprietary stainless steel alloy. This year, Rolex introduced a new two-tone version in Everose Rolesor, combining 18k Everose gold with Oystersteel. It is also available in classic Rolesor, 18k yellow gold, and Oystersteel, as well as all-gold or all-steel versions. The new models contain the automatic caliber 3235, with all of the exceptional qualities of the company’s other elite new-generation movements, including Chronergy escapement and Superlative Chronometer certification.

The light pink color is consistent and fairly saturated and can be found with orange or violet overtones. Morganite, also known as pink beryl, was named after banker and gem collector John Pierpont Morgan.
THE MAGIC OF
COLOR Painter Henri Matisse famously said, “With color, one obtains an energy that seems to stem from witchcraft.” Indeed, color seems to cast a magic spell over everything it touches. In jewelry, it has the power to transform a simple piece into a masterpiece or add just the right finishing touch to an otherwise subdued palette. Gemstones of any color are hot right now in jewelry design, partly because stacking and layering is such a big trend. The art of mixing and matching gemstones, metal finishes, textures, and sizes just wouldn’t be possible without the endless variety of colored gemstones. The look is inherently busy, since the idea is to continuously create unique and ever-changing combinations of color, texture, and scale. Colored gemstones are also the best way to add drama to a cocktail ring and give big earrings the pop they deserve. A particular color of gemstone is also frequently the defining feature of a signature style. It can help define your personality.

BRILLIANT BLUES Pantone also lists Nebulas Blue as one of its top ten colors of the year, which may explain why vibrant fine turquoise is making a big comeback among several top designers this season. Turquoise has been worn as a talisman for thousands of years, and is thought to bring good luck to the wearer. It looks good in all metal colors, and it mixes well with other gemstones. Today, most turquoise is treated with wax to preserve the brilliant, happy color. The best turquoise is a brilliant sky blue. Turquoise plays well with other blue gemstones, including blue topaz, another hot gem this season. There are several types of topaz, all named according to their color properties.

fall into that category. At one point considered the only precious gemstones (the rest were called semi-precious), these three gems, in the highest qualities, always hold their value, and in some cases are priced well above diamonds. Just because they are classic, though, doesn’t mean the big three have remained static in terms of design. Just as pearls no longer come only in strands, the big three have progressed beyond the art deco bracelet of decades past. Modern designs, unusual cuts, and nontraditional combinations have brought them into the 21st century.

PERFORMANCE
DYNASTY THE NEW ASTON MARTIN VANTAGE
Vantage. An evocative name for a magnificent bloodline of thoroughbred sports cars. The Vantage nameplate has been worn by some true icons. First used in 1951 on a high-output engine option for the DB2, Vantage was quickly established as a model in its own right. Highlights include the William Townsdesigned V8 Vantage, spectacular twin-supercharged V600 Le Mans, and the much-loved V8 Vantage. Today this formidable sporting dynasty is poised to hit new heights with the introduction of the new Vantage. Pure, sculptural forms create an athletic, predatory stance, while the minimal front and rear overhangs, muscular flanks, and broad haunches express the agility and dynamism inherent within the car. New head- and tail-lights form dramatic new signatures giving the Vantage unmistakable road presence. Aerodynamic performance is central to the Vantage design concept: the front splitter directs airflow underneath the car, where a system of fences channels cooling air where it is needed, and also ensures the rear diffuser is fed with clean airflow. The design of the diffuser creates an area of low pressure air while simultaneously preventing turbulence generated by the rear wheels from disrupting the flow of air exiting centrally from beneath the rear of the car.

Together with the new side gills, which have been integrated into the body surface and bleed air pressure out from the front wheel arches, and the pronounced upswept rear deck lid, the Vantage generates a significant level of downforce — a rarity on any production car. The design story continues inside the Vantage, with a dynamic and focused sports car cockpit that rejects long fluid curves in favour of sharp focused lines denoting the more aggressive nature of the car. A high waist interior theme and lower driving position creates a more immersive driving experience and contributes to significant gains in occupant space and significant improvement in headroom compared with the outgoing Vantage. A combination of rotary and toggle style controls have been used for their tactile and intuitive functionality. The heart of the Vantage is Aston Martin’s potent new alloy 4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. Set low and as far back in the chassis as possible for optimal center of gravity and perfect 50:50 weight distribution, this high performance, high efficiency engine returns a CO2 figure of *245g/km yet develops 510PS at 6000rpm and 685Nm from 2000-5000rpm. The Vantage deploys its impressive power and torque to the rear wheels via a rear-mounted ZF eight-speed automatic transmission and is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60mph in 3.5 seconds and on to a maximum speed of 195mph. Aston Martin President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Andy Palmer notes: “It speaks volumes for the outgoing Vantage that it is the single most successful model in Aston Martin’s history. Creating a worthy successor has been a challenge to relish and a huge source of motivation. I’m enormously excited by what we’ve created.”

anton Hathaway is a full-service multi-family office founded by the leaders of two Rhode Island families of national reputation, Malcolm Chace Jr. and James A. Procaccianti. Malcolm and Jim have family histories marked
by success in creating and preserving wealth over time: the Chaces in industry and finance since the early 1800s and the Procacciantis since the modern era began in real estate. In retrospect, success on this scale can appear inevitable, but it takes many good decisions to sustain it over generations. With an eye to the future and the goal to expand the resources available to their own families, Malcolm and Jim joined together with professional partners to form Canton Hathaway. The firm is an SEC Registered Investment Advisor serving a select clientele of like-minded families who value independent advice informed by the sound judgment of experienced professionals. Services include personal investment counselling and custom portfolio management, select sourcing of private, institutional quality opportunities, and access to highly-qualified outside professionals, as needed. We provide attentive service for a limited number of client relationships. There are two Canton Hathaway offices, one in Providence and one in Palm Beach, Florida. DAVID YURMAN SEA SENSATIONS
D
avid and Sybil Yurman, both fine artists, have been collaborating together since 1969,
creating beautiful jewelry that has always been inspired by the beauty that surrounds them. “Everything we design is a reflection of our experiences in life,” says Sybil, who was inspired by a long-ago vacation to create the new Tides collection. The diamond-encrusted designs capture her memories of peaceful ease and solitude during a time on Formentera, an island near Ibiza off the southern coast of Spain. “The collection has the vibrancy of the sun, the sea, and the island,” says Sybil. The ripples of polished sterling silver or 18k gold that characterize the Tides collection are designed to emulate the ebb and flow of ocean tides. They are engineered to undulate with fluid movement reminiscent of the cycles of the sea, creating a meditative moment. Sterling silver hand set with diamonds evokes the luminescence of a moonlit walk along the shore. “There’s something about the warmth of the sea and sun, the ease of floating in the water. It was one of the most relaxing times in my life.” Sybil found herself in Formentera in the 1960s, when she decided to leave California to visit friends in London. After a month or two, she took a job as a junior stylist for British photographer David Bailey, a defining force in the era’s Swinging London scene. After a shoot one

day with the iconic model Twiggy, one of the hairstylists asked Sybil if she wanted to join them on a trip to Spain. Wanting to experience something new, Sybil agreed, and got a haircut along the way. First, they visited Ibiza, and Sybil remembers not only the breathtaking Mediterranean vistas but also the riotous party scene. “It was about dancing and abandonment,” she says. “No one wore tops and everyone was beautiful. I enjoyed living there, but eventually wanted to get away from it all.” That’s when she ventured to Formentera. “I had no idea where I was going, so I and one other person got off the bus at Sant Francesc, thinking it was a town.” The sleepy village had nothing beyond a café and a grocery store. “We both went into the grocery store, and it had only an onion, some rice and a can of sardines. He took the onion and I took the sardines.” After reaching for the same bag of rice, Sybil introduced herself to the other passenger, a Dutch film-and-music critic. She proposed making dinner together, and they became friends. At night, Sybil wandered the island by moonlight, taking in the elemental

beauty of Formentera. “It was just sky, water, pine trees, and rocks.” During the day, she would “have lunch at a little shack on the beach and then just lie in the water as the tides gently moved in and out.” The Tides collection is proof that warm memories provide the best inspiration — a reminder of life’s greatest moments.

just cocktail rings with big center gemstones. Primarily metal wide band rings with lots of gold surface are the big thing this season, particularly with a sprinkling of smaller diamonds. The style is versatile because it works in both casual and dressy environments. High profile rings that show the gold from many angles are also an important design element. And to cut back on the weight — and price — large rings can be cut out to create open spaces, retaining a large frame and a big look despite lower gold weight.

he magic of Marco Bicego jewelry is the way the collection has evolved over the years without ever losing its unmistakable identity. Each collection
started as a series of basic classic pieces with clean lines, balanced proportions, and easy wearability. These pieces have evolved incrementally over the years to incorporate new colors, sizes, and design elements that complement existing styles. It is this deliberate versatility that makes Marco Bicego jewelry such a popular and collectible brand.

The Lunaria collection, for instance, started with the simple, organic shape inspired by the Lunaria plant petal, finished with Marco Bicego’s trademark hand-textured gold. Subsequent variations have incorporated black or white mother-of-pearl or gemstone applications, including diamonds. As the collection expands, it becomes even more wearable and collectible, since pieces can be layered or worn separately in many different ways or for different occasions: dressing up, dressing down, adding color to a summer look, and so on. The same approach is applied to the Africa Stardust collection, which is inspired by organic forms, tribal jewelry, and the natural

yellow, and rose gold are equally popular. I love seeing my clients layer their vintage pieces with their new DRD and incorporating the three metal colors in their own way. DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO HAVE A WOMAN DESIGNING JEWELRY FOR WOMEN? Yes, there is no better person to design for a woman than the person living the same lifestyle. In past generations, the jewelry industry was dominated by men. While their designs are beautiful and many remain classics to this day, I’m excited to see many women designers rising in the industry. CAN YOU TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE NEW FOR THIS YEAR? With our collections launching this holiday season, we are adding movement into our pieces. My dad was a bench jeweler many years ago and eventually started his own company. After college, I didn’t jump directly into jewelry. I was on Wall Street for 10 years, and realized I was completely unfulfilled and unhappy in my career. I left Wall Street, traveled around the world to try and find myself, but what I actually found was that I needed something to satisfy my creative impulses. I returned home, joined the family business, and ultimately fell in love with life again. Jackie Cohen

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE? I design things I want to wear and that celebrate life moments. My collection came about after I looked for a piece of jewelry to celebrate becoming a mom. I couldn’t find anything that fit my aesthetic. I became a mom in my 40s through adoption, and naturally after the journey, I wanted a piece to commemorate this unforgettable moment. I created a ring I could wear everyday, featuring Julia’s birthstone. So, it was mom jewelry, but it could be mixed into my traditional jewelry. I found that the ring sparked conversation wherever I went. As I began to share my journey and unconventional road, what I received in return were other peoples’ stories and a connection to them. A few special orders later, and My Story was born. WHAT INSPIRES YOU THE MOST? Hands down, my daughter. I always remember hearing people saying their kids inspire them, and wondering how a four-year-old can inspire you? Then I became a mom. They just do. Being a mom is powerful. It’s a gift, and my daughter has made me a kinder, more patient, gentle person. WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT JEWELRY TRENDS RIGHT NOW, AND HOW DO YOU INTERPRET THOSE TRENDS? Personalization is very on trend right now. My Story is about celebrating those you love in color. The next progression of the brand was dogtags and layering necklaces that can be personalized with dates, names, initials, coordinates, whatever it is that is personal to you. #GIRLPOWER is also huge. Our mantra rings are perfect for a women’s self purchase. They tell your story with words like, BOSS, badass, bossbabe, mama, granny, bestie, taken, hope, j’adore, amour...or make it your own with your favorite sayings. Rainbows are huge right now too. We have our Amelia ring which comes in rainbow but can also be custom done with the birthstones of your family

DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO HAVE A WOMAN DESIGNING JEWELRY FOR WOMEN? For me yes, for a few reasons. For comfort — are the earrings too big, too small, do they have movement to make them sexy? Do they stack, layer, and mix into her everyday wear? The second reason is that I think women who design and run their own companies (#girlboss) are perfect role models for other young entrepreneurs. CAN YOU TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE NEW FOR THIS YEAR? Funny, I never know what’s next for me, I call My Story my accidental passion project. Lockets are new for me, and I hope to continue making special pieces so women can love and celebrate important people and milestones in their life with a My Story piece of jewelry.
Zoë Chicco — Zoë Chicco Jewelry WHAT MADE YOU WANT TO BECOME A JEWELRY DESIGNER? I’ve made jewelry for as long as I can remember. I have memories of gluing together found objects — buttons, keys, beads, coins — whatever I could get my hands on. In high school, my art teacher took me under her wing and taught me the basics of metalsmithing. That was when I became obsessed with the creative process! But I don’t think I realized that I could do it professionally, until I was in college. I decided my sophomore year to major in studio art with a metalsmithing concentration and never looked back. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE? I would say my signature style is modern fine jewelry with a laid-back California attitude. I gravitate towards clean lines and classic forms — in my home, personal style, and jewelry line — and I create what I can see myself or my friends wearing every day. WHAT INSPIRES YOU THE MOST? I am a very visual person, so what I see inspires me. It could be anything — a pattern, a building, a work of art. But I tend to have my best moments of inspiration when I am traveling. I think it’s because I am out of the office and my brain is open, not focusing on work. Two of my more recent collections were inspired that way. The Horizon collection was inspired by a sunset in Hawaii, and our best-selling Paris collection was inspired by an ornate ceiling Zoë Chicco

WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT JEWELRY TRENDS RIGHT NOW? HOW DO YOU INTERPRET THOSE TRENDS? Two trends that I am really loving (and wearing myself) that have informed my 14K necklace with discs by Zoe Chicco, $875.
recent collections include thick statement chains and pops of color. I have always loved the old school ID bracelet — the chunky feel of it along with the classic curb-style chain — but I wanted to give it an updated vibe. Using this heavier chain juxtaposed with fine diamonds seemed like a really interesting way to inject some unexpected edginess. In terms of color, while I do already design with gemstones like emeralds, rubies, turquoise, and pearls, they tend to play a supporting role to the star of the show: diamonds. I was a little hesitant to make any color, let alone the entire rainbow, my main focus until this season, but I am so glad I took the leap! Deciding to mix multi-colored sapphires with my classic bezel styles felt very much in line with my aesthetic. The pieces are vibrant and playful yet classic and minimal in a fun way. DO YOU THINK IT’S IMPORTANT TO HAVE A WOMAN DESIGNING FOR WOMEN? I think there are plenty of male designers who are extremely talented and make exquisite jewelry for women. So I don’t think it is necessary that women design for women. However, after I design each and every piece of jewelry and my in-house team of artisans creates the prototype, I can then take it for a test drive. I see how it feels, how it lays on the body, how it layers with other pieces. I want to know first-hand if the piece works before we add it to the collection. So that is a bit of an advantage — although who am I to say that a male designer doesn’t do the same! CAN YOU TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE NEW FOR THIS YEAR? The Rainbow collection mentioned above is new, as is the thicker curb chain collection with mixed diamonds. Both of those have been doing very well for us.
14K hoop earrings with diamonds by Zoe Chicco, $550.
The other newness is our Mantra collection, born from my desire to live with greater intention. One way I do that is with a personal mantra: Work hard, stay humble, be kind. This phrase has kept me grounded through life’s ups and downs, and I wanted to create something that would serve as a daily reminder of these and other words to live by. Every piece in the collection features inspiring phrases that resonate with each person a little differently. You can choose your mantra and apply it to several different necklace and bracelet options to make it your own. It’s exciting to think that these pieces will be a stylish source of inspiration and intention for each of the women who wear them. Additionally, our charm necklaces have been a huge hit with our retailers, as they like the idea that their customers can build a custom necklace or purchase charms à la carte to add to an existing necklace. There is something for everyone. We specialize in personalized pieces like initials, engraved discs, and symbols, so offering these best-selling styles

things in life happen by chance. Pearls were discovered incidentally by divers gathering seafood, and, in fact, pearls themselves are an accident of nature — they are formed as a defense mechanism when an irritant, usually a parasite or a grain of sand, works its way into an oyster or mussel. The oyster secretes a fluid called nacre to coat the invader, and that is what we call a pearl. Up until the late 19th century, pearls were found only haphazardly — you had to open up hundreds of thousands of oysters to find one — so like diamonds, they were worn only by the wealthy. That changed when man began cultivating pearls by deliberately introducing irritants into mollusks in organized pearl farms. The lustrous pearl thus became available to the masses. Today, the democratization of pearls is complete. Not only are they more accessible in terms of price,

but also in terms of design, having evolved beyond variations of the traditional strand to more creative, contemporary configurations. Pearls have a universal appeal that suits any occasion or level of formality, and they seem to have become a favorite of millennials. The variety of types, colors, sizes, and applications

make them one of the most versatile gemstones available, easily applied to any jewelry trend or price point. This year we are seeing them as the focus of everything from long, shoulder-duster drop earrings to Y-necklaces and bolos. They also look good with virtually any other gemstone. Here are a few trends that stand out this season:

CARE Pearls are organic, which means they can absorb other substances and, therefore, should be stored and handled with a certain amount of caution. They can

be damaged if they come into contact with perfume, cosmetics, hairspray, or household cleaners. As such, it is good practice, to put them on last and take them off first and then store them in a soft cloth pouch, but never in plastic because it can emit a chemical that damages the pearl’s surface. Pearls should also be worn often to let them absorb moisture from the skin, which prevents them from drying out. With a little care, these popular, prized and precious gems can be enjoyed forever.
KNOW YOUR PEARLS Cultured pearls are pearls cultivated by inserting a nucleus into a mollusk living in either fresh or salt water.
Limited Edition 18K Lace South Sea Pearl and diamond drop earrings by Mastoloni, $9500.
AKOYA PEARLS are cultured saltwater pearls from the Akoya oyster. FRESHWATER PEARLS are any pearls, cultured or natural, from freshwater dwelling mollusks. BLACK TAHITIAN pearls are large, dark pearls grown in French Polynesia. SOUTH SEA pearls are large pearls cultivated in the warm South Sea between northern Australia and southern China. MOTHER-OF-PEARL or nacre is the compound secreted by the oyster that forms the pearl. Cultured

freshwater pearls are solid nacre. Cultured saltwater pearls have a nucleus and then many layers of nacre, the number and thickness of which influence the quality of the pearl. Solid nacre is not necessarily better; freshwater pearls are still inexpensive despite being solid nacre since they are easy to cultivate and are often baroque instead of round. BAROQUE pearls are off-round, spontaneous growth pearls that have irregular shapes. They are favored by many jewelry designers looking for something less formal (and less expensive) than a perfect round.

TRADITION Despite the newfound modernity of pearl jewelry, there is a surprisingly strong return to traditional looks this year, including top-notch Akoya strands, chokers, and even tiaras. Ironically, millennials are bringing back some of the formality to pearl designs.

SKIN HEALTHY
SUPER FOODS
A clear and healthy complexion is the foundation for all your beauty efforts. While creams, lotions, and potions can do a lot to improve your skin health, they’re often only repairing the damage caused by pollution, weather, and the other stresses of modern life. It’s far better to give your skin the support it needs to resist this damage in the first place. That means eating a diet which works at improving your skin health. Here are seven key foods that will give your complexion all the help it needs.

His book covers visits to 900 taverns, so he’s perfectly positioned to offer some top-notch recommendations. “Gaffney & Son is a local suburban pub renowned for its Guinness. I’ve never had a bad pint there,” says Moloney. “The staff talk to the customers about sport and the day’s news, and if you want a quiet pint, they may offer you a newspaper. They don’t serve food and no children are allowed and, from my experience, it’s one of Dublin’s best locals.” But it’s not his only favorite. In the city centre, the Brazen Head claims to be Ireland’s oldest pub with a history stretching back to 1198. There’s daily live music, superior pub grub, and popular Irish storytelling dinners. “The tourists mix with the regulars here, and there’s great banter from the staff, making everyone feel at home,” says Moloney.

Joe and Amanda got engaged in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. At dinner, she was led out of the restaurant to an elegantly decorated table located on the pier. After a few moments, Joe popped the question, and Amanda said yes with no hesitation.
THE PROPOSAL
Erica is a huge Red Sox fan. Chris told her that he had a suprise planned, but she thought the tour at Fenway Park was it. After the tour, they were invited onto the pitcher’s mound. Chris told her he had one more surprise, and before she knew it, he got down on one knee.

DIAMOND SHAPES AND CUTS The 57-facet round-brilliant cut is the most popular diamond cut for solitaire diamonds because it produces the most pure white light return. It is cut with specific mathematically calculated angles that optimize the shine and sparkle of the diamond. But it’s far from the only choice! There are many different cuts and shapes to choose from, all of which have their own unique charms. Fancy shapes such as pear, marquise (a long rectangle with pointed tips), emerald (a rectangular

SETTINGS

Coast Diamond platinum .47ctw double prong engagement ring featuring multiple diamond rings in the gallery.
Prong setting is the most common setting in jewelry and is often used in solitaire diamond rings because it uses the least amount of metal to hold the stone, thus showing off the diamond to its best advantage. Generally, it is simply a number of gold posts (usually four or six), called prongs, that are fixed at the base and arranged in a shape and size to hold the stone. After the stone is inserted between the prongs, a tool is used to bend the prongs gently over the crown of the stone. The halo setting, a center stone surrounded by a “halo” of smaller stones, is the biggest thing to hit engagement ring design since the prong setting. The halo adds visual interest to a single stone, while making it look much bigger. Designers have recently morphed the halo into square and hexagonal frames, featuring colored stones and diamonds, as well as baguettes. In a bezel setting, another popular choice, the metal is rounded or bent into the shape and size of the stone. The diamond is then inserted into the bezel, and the metal is rubbed over the stone, holding it in place. This method works well for either cabochon or faceted stones. Rings are sometimes surrounded by smaller diamonds on the shank that are pavé set — closely set together with minimum visibility of the tiny metal beads or prongs that hold them in place. The effect is of a surface “paved” with diamonds. Some women prefer a so-called east-west setting, when an elongated stone such

as an oval, radiant cut, or marquise is set sideways across the finger, as opposed to the traditional north-south direction up and down the finger. This modern setting has reignited the popularity of cuts like pears and marquises.

MARK OF THE
VIPER
TAG Heuer’s Tête de Vipère Chronograph
Tourbillon Chronometer is the first TAG Heuer watch to receive the Besançon Obervatory Tête de Vipère (Viper’s Head) stamp of approval. Besançon Observatory was one of the strictest of the two or three observatories in Europe that assessed and graded Swiss watch movements for accuracy back in the days when timepieces were used in marine navigation. This type of testing was largely abandoned in the 1970s when quartz, a different technology, became popular, but the lab was relaunched in 2006. Since
then, only 500 mechanical watches have passed the observatory’s 16-day accuracy test in five positions at three different temperatures. “The Viper’s head stamp,” says TAG Heuer, “is more than simply proof of quality and accuracy. It is confirmation of technical expertise that borders on perfection.”
