ON THE OYSTER TRAIL There’s a buzz around Ocean State oysters, and they’ve become such a sensation that the Bowen’s Wharf Company has brought farmers and restaurants together to form the Rhode Island Oyster Trail (RIOysterTrail.com). The trail connects oyster fans directly with the farms where the oysters are raised by allowing them to take a self-guided tour. After a day of going farm to farm, stop by one of the many restaurants that are part of the trail, which are dedicated to serving at least one RI-raised oyster year-round. Some of the choice stops are:
HeyRhody.com
Newport’s Midtown Oyster Bar (MidtownOyster.com) for their assortment of Venus, Walrus & Carpenter, East Beach Blondes and Quonset oysters; Coast Guard House (TheCoastGuardHouse. com) in Narragansett for Walrus & Carpenter and Salt Pond oysters; Greenwich Bay Oyster Bar in East Greenwich (GreenwichBayOysterBar.com) for Beavertails, Hope Islands and Umami; and McCormick & Schmick’s (McCormickAndSchmicks.com) in Providence, for Matunuck oysters. It’s a whole new level of oyster appreciation. Follow the RI Oyster Trail straight to Greenwich Bay Oyster Bar Dining Guide 2017 |

A Taste of Victorian Hospitality The Lippitt House Museum takes a look at table manners before takeout
Leading a Food Revolution Sue AnderBois, the state’s first Director of Food Strategy, is thinking differently about Rhody food
Sue AnderBois is
Party like it’s 1899 at the Lippitt House Museum in Providence
It’s no secret that America’s favorite pastime is eating, drinking and, well, having a good time. But dinner in the digital age can often look something like two-day-old leftovers and frozen veggies at 8pm, probably more than anyone cares to admit. Of course, the bar is raised a bit when entertaining company. But even at the snazziest of dinner parties, a well-composed three-course meal and a bar stocked with mid-shelf wine and cold beer is about all anyone can ask for (which, let’s be honest, sounds amazing). While modern-day dining trends naturally find their roots in history, mealtime today looks very different than it did 100 years ago. For those who are curious to see how our dining customs have evolved over the last century and a half, Providence’s Lippitt House Museum (PreserveRI.org) invites you to experience their newest exhibit, which spotlights Victorian dining and social practices. The exhibit, titled “The Art of Dining: A Taste of Providence’s Golden 10
| Dining Guide 2017
Age,” runs through October and tells a story of Victorian dining through the real-life accounts of the Lippitt family. Each of the six rooms depicts a specific scene that would have been customary in the Victorian era, with some rooms even recreating specific events hosted by the Lippitt family. Guests can explore the dining room, where Mary Ann Lippitt hosted a gossipfilled, eight-course ladies luncheon on September 28, 1877, or check out the music room, where the men withdrew after dinner to drink brandy, smoke cigars and discuss politics. Visit the butler’s pantry to discover how the household staff produced such elaborate meals, and get a glimpse of the impressive glass and silver collection from which the Lippitts sipped their libations. The exhibit’s decor and elaborate displays outshine even the most Pinterest-worthy meals and tablescapes. For all social beings who put eating and drinking at the center of our culture, this exhibit is not to be missed. –Erin Belknap
Rhode Island’s first-ever Director of Food Strategy, a position introduced last year by Governor Raimondo. In this role, Sue has been tasked with building a comprehensive food strategy to grow our economy and promote health and sustainability across our diverse food-related landscapes: farms, fisheries, urban communities and more. Sue’s appointment was announced during the spring of 2016, but she moved to Providence four years ago with her husband, a professor at Brown. After growing up in the small town of (believe it or not) New Providence, New Jersey, she lived in California for a stretch before moving to Rhode Island. Immediately upon arriving here, Sue joined Farm Fresh RI as a board member and then as a staff member. When the governor announced the newly created position, “I was excited because it was exactly the type of work I’d been wanting to do,” says Sue, who was selected thanks to her background in clean energy, food policy and strategic planning. “It’s been a great opportunity to bring together lots of people across the state – learning, convening and collaborating.”
Rather than simply “making decisions at my desk,” about the food strategy plan she introduced this past May, Sue says she’s chosen to spend her time traversing the state, visiting various groups and conducting public outreach meetings at URI’s Food System Summit and in Providence, Newport, Blackstone, Woonsocket and more. “My little Civic has a lot of miles on it now,” she laughs. “Since I’m not a native, it’s been fascinating to travel around and meet different people; it’s a small place, and everyone can get everywhere, but there are definitely distinct regions throughout.” The response to her work so far has been excellent: “People have been really receptive. They like that the strategy represents the entire food system and not just one part, like restaurants,” she says. “They’re also excited that we’re the first ones doing this, because we recognize that food is important and collaboration is key.” And Sue notes that citizens can reach out to her at any time: “My door is always open. I’m always happy to talk to Rhode Islanders about food and connect them in any way that makes sense to them.” –Amanda M. Grosvenor HeyRhody.com

A New Neighborhood Market Farm Fresh RI opens its groundbreaking new Pawtucket cafe and corner store Years in the making, Harvest Kitchen Cafe & Corner Store (Facebook: Harvest Kitchen RI) is the culmination of Farm Fresh Rhode Island’s mission to provide the state with local, delicious and nutritious food and produce. The small cafe and grocery, which opened in July, is a product of the Harvest Kitchen program, which helps at-risk youths develop professional skills and learn about the food
industry from growth and production to sale. It is located on the corner of Main and Bayley streets in downtown Pawtucket, where Harvest Kitchen kids are trained and cook in a commercial kitchen. The cafe features fresh produce from local farms, staple groceries and grab-n-go meals. It will also sell a full line of Harvest Kitchen foods, like their handmade applesauce and
soups. Since one of the goals of Farm Fresh RI is to make fresh food more accessible, the store will also accept EBT/SNAP and distribute some of their prepared foods to local corner stores. Through programs like Harvest Kitchen, Farm Fresh RI has developed close relationships with local farmers and producers that it pledges to always support. “We help farmers and
producers thrive by creating marketplaces for them, but also helping them reach those marketplaces – as well as increasing demand,” says Farm Fresh RI communications director Rebecca Seggel, in reference to the work the organization has done to help local producers sell to the public. “So the Harvest Kitchen Cafe & Corner Store is going to be a great medium of all these things.” –Megan Schmit

Feel the Love Plan a date night at one of Providence’s most romantic restaurants
Cafe Nuovo’s (CafeNuovo.com) patio overlooking the Providence River – and, if you’re smart, WaterFire – is the perfect place to linger over dessert and gaze longingly into each other’s eyes.
With oversized chandeliers and antiques all around, Cav (CavRestaurant. com) in the Jewelry District sets the scene for cozy dinners for two. Even better, most of their appetizers are made to share.
Downtown, Capriccio (Capriccio.com) does old-school service right: think waiters in tuxedos and roses on every table, plus a scattering of rose petals for special occasions, by their romantic fireplace.
Set a romantic mood at Mill’s Tavern (MillsTavernRestaurant.com) by starting off the evening with champagne and oysters at the bar – during happy hour, raw bar is all $1. Where the night goes from there is up to you.
Is there anything sexier than a hotel bar? At McCormick and Schmick’s (McCormickAndSchmicks.com) in the Biltmore, the bartenders mix up delicious cocktails with fresh-squeezed juices.
From the sexy art on the walls to the elegant cocktails, everything at Ten Prime Steak and Sushi (TenPrimeSteakAndSushi.com) is primed for a romantic date night. Share some sushi and a steak, and the rest will take care of itself.

RI Food Fights is on a delicious mission to find the state’s best food
Who doesn’t love a little friendly competition, especially when it involves food? “Pound for pound, Rhode Island has the best food options anywhere,” says RI Food Fights (Facebook: RI Food Fights) founder Jim Nellis, who started the organization with the goal of connecting people with local restaurants. It’s now what he calls Rhode Island’s largest social media marketing effort with a food focus. On average, it has helped draw 315 new customers to its participating restaurants each competition. How it works? Purchase a “passport” – essentially a book of coupons – for $20 and redeem it for free food or a beverage at participating restaurants, then vote on your favorite. They’ve featured HeyRhody.com
everything from doughnuts to pizza – May’s Big Burger Blowout saw 900 foodie participants and 19 restaurants vying to steal the title of “best burger” in RI. “There’s a magic in it that I didn’t create,” Jim says of the spark he’s observed between the people, chefs and restaurants during the competitions. He is proud and pleased to see the impact his organization has had on the community. The 4th annual Iced Coffee Summer Celebration runs through August, featuring at least 20 participating coffee shops. September will bring BagelFest 2017, RI Food Fights’ hunt for the state’s best bagel among at least 15 competing businesses. –Megan Schmit

September 21-24: 12th Annual Newport Mansions Food & Wine Festival
Mouthwatering Events August 13: The 2nd Annual “See Food Differently” Lobster Boil (MakeFoodYourBusiness.org) at Hope & Main in Warren offers lobster and cocktails, made with fresh local ingredients. The best part is, net proceeds go towards starting small food businesses, so you can feel good about going back for seconds. August 21: Think a gourmet meal and a scenic walk can’t fit into the same evening? Think again. The Land and Sea Dinner Series (EatDrinkRI.com) at Potter Pond in Matunuck offers a tour of an organic farm, then a raw bar with oysters harvested fresh from that pond. After, enjoy a four-course meal served by Metacom Kitchen’s Rick Allaire. August 29: The Scales and Tales Dinner Series (EatDrinkRI.com) at Nick’s on Broadway in Providence gives you food and information: a meal of locallysourced seafood, and afterward, a talk by local fishermen and scientists on the Ocean State’s ecosystems and fishing industry. September 9: Considering that it’s our state appetizer, it’s safe to say that Rhode Islanders know how to do calamari right. The Rhode Island Calamari Festival (RICalamariFest.com) at Veterans Park in Narragansett offers a day of fresh local seafood, kids activities and live music - as well as a competition to see which vendor makes the best squid. September 9-10: We would list every food item available at the 7th Annual Rhode Island Seafood HeyRhody.com
Festival (RISeafoodFest.com), but let’s keep it short and sweet: it’s got everything from crab rolls to cannolis. Oh, and live music, too. Providence won’t know what hit it, but they’ll definitely taste it. September 15-17: When they say “Taste of Block Island” (BlockIslandChamber.com), they don’t just mean food. This event offers three days of discounts at businesses around the island, letting you shop, sleep and even take the island taxi for reduced prices. Of course, food events are planned as well - everything from a build your own sundae to a “Build Your Own Bloody.”
October 20: The Beervana Fest (BeervanaFest.com) at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet offers an evening of beer tasting, featuring over 250 world-class brews enough to take up two floors! The ticket includes not just a glass, but also entrance to several educational seminars on the fine art of craft beer.
September 21-24: Experience living large at the 12th Annual Newport Mansions Food & Wine Festival (NewportMansions.org), when the lawns of the Elms, Rosecliff and Marble House become the stage for a gala, dinner and, of course, an expansive, world-class wine tasting. Oh, and look out for some celebrity chefs. September 23: The 3rd Annual Ocean State Oyster Festival (OysterFestRI.com) in Providence is sure to have some of the best seafood around. A ticket will get you half a dozen oysters and a beverage, not to mention access to all of the other great food, live music and the oyster-shucking contest. October 14-15: Head to the 27th Annual Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival (BowensWharf.com) in Newport for one last chance to spend the day at the waterfront before the autumn chill kicks in. The event serves calamari, clam chowder and other Ocean State favorites.

Cultural Festivals with Delicious Eats
October 8-10: Columbus Day Festival on Federal Hill
August 18-20: For the 90th year in a row, the Assumption RI Greek Festival (AssumptionRI.org) in Pawtucket gives visitors a chance to experience Greek culture, with traditional homemade foods such as rice pilaf, moussaka and gyros, and Greek pastries such as loukoumades and baklava. Plus, there will be live music and traditional dancing. September 9-11: Roasted lamb, pastitsio and spanakopita sound great, but that’s just the surface of the 31st Annual Cranston Greek Festival (AnnunciationRI.org) at the Church of the Annunciation in Cranston: visitors can also tour the church and observe traditional dances. September 30-October 1: For two days, Rhode Island has its very own Little Bavaria. Oktoberfest at the Pawtucket German Club (GACSRI.org) combines German cuisine with German culture for an entire weekend of beer and sausage, as well as traditional dances, music and dress. Prost! October 7: Head down to Oktoberfest at Bold Point Park (RIWaterfrontEvents.com) in East Providence for a day of beer, beer and more beer. Choose from dozens of brews - local, imported and craft - and pick up a hot dog while enjoying live music and (responsible) drinking games. October 8-10: The best Italian food in Providence comes to Federal Hill for Columbus Day Festival Weekend (FederalHillProv.com). Combine your pasta obsession with live music, Italian markets and the big Columbus Day parade. All other festivals strive to be as tasty as this one.
Foodie Tours Around the State Sundays, August 13 - September 10: The Federal Hill Food and History Tour (FederalHillTours.com) offers food and history - Italian food and history, to be precise. Tour multiple restaurants and become acquainted with the rich Italian-American heritage of Federal Hill, complemented by a crash course in Italian cuisine.
Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays: Explore Providence with the Downcity Providence Food Tour (RhodeIsland RedFoodTours.com), a survey of downtown’s history and unique architecture, punctuated by eight tastings at some of the city’s best restaurants. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in August: The Rhode Island Brew Bus (TheRhodeIslandBrewBus.com) runs several tours, and each has one thing in common: travelers get to sample some of the state’s best beer directly from the source. The four tours start in Westerly, Providence, Wakefield and Saunderstown, respectively.

Select Saturdays: Cindy Salvato’s Federal Hill Food Tours (SavoringRhodeIsland.com) offer culinary escapades in towns across Northern and Eastern Rhode Island. Fridays and Saturdays: The Newport Neighborhood Food Tour (RhodeIslandRedFoodTours.com) offers a stroll through a city brimming with colonial architecture, picturesque sea-views and great food. Eat (and Shop) Local Stock your pantry with locavore foods found at these cafes and markets By Megan Schmit
Shore’s Fresh Food Market (ShoresMarket.com) has been serving North Providence as a family tradition since 1920. Find all of your RI state favorites here, like Autocrat Coffee Milk ice cream, Nuts ‘n More protein butter truffle bites and Wright’s Farm salad dressings.

In downtown Providence, Eastside Mart (EastsideMart.com) has been owned and operated by Paul Smith and his family for the past six years. Among their selection of local products you can find Del’s famous lemonade, Annie B’s honey from Cumberland and Brown Bear peanut butter from Providence. Tom’s Market (TomsMarket.com) in Warren has no shortage of locally-sourced products, including Fox Point Pickles, Catanzaro’s pasta sauce from Pawtucket, and Warren-based Anchor Toffee. Two additional locations can be found in Tiverton and Coventry, and at each their promise of “fresh, local and exceptional” food holds up.

If you’re in the mood for something sweet, pick up Sweet and Salty Farm yogurt or DeLucia’s jams from Wilbur’s General Store (WilbursGeneralStore.com) in Little Compton. While the general store is over 100 years old, it still provides all the modern variety of a chain grocer – with some local favorites, of course. If you’re environmentally conscious, McQuade’s Marketplace (McQuadesMarket.com) in Westerly and Jamestown is your shopping destination. They offer produce with an eye for the organic and local, like fresh fruits and vegetables from Charlestown’s Earth Care Farm and South Kingstown’s Carpenter’s Farm. South County Food Co-op (SouthCountyFoodCoop. com) in Wakefield nurtures community roots by selling a range of local products. What started as a grassroots co-op in 1970 has transformed into a successful grocery and cafe. In their aisles you can find Windmist Farm eggs, Rhody Fresh milk, Glee Gum and Poblano Farm salsa from South Kingstown. This certainly isn’t your mother’s pantry. Nestled inside a restaurant serving cocktails and New American fare, The Pantry at Avenue N (Avenue-NAmericanKitchen.com) is an upscale market that boasts a selection of local goods, including Granny Squibb’s Iced Tea and Warren’s Biggest Little Popcorn Company. Dave’s Marketplace (DavesMarketplace.com) has been locally owned since 1969, and having opened their newest location in Cranston earlier this year they’re not showing any signs of slowing down. Anyone looking to buy local goods will find plenty in their stores, like Pawtucket-based Chi Kitchen’s kimchi or sauerkraut from Cranston’s Lost Art Cultured Foods.

Swirl, Sniff, Sip, Om Yoga is more relaxing than ever with a local wine or pint By Jessica Bryant

INHALE, EXHALE After a busy day, the only thing more relaxing than sitting down with a cold brew is taking a yoga class to go with it. Yes, this really exists. On the second Wednesday of every month, Foolproof Brewing Company (FoolproofBrewing.com), in partnership with Nanaquacket Yoga Studio, offers a one-hour vinyasa yoga class in the Pawtucket brewery. After the class, enjoy a craft beer sampling of four 4-ounce pours. Pro tip: Make sure to sign up beforehand, as the space can only accommodate up to 20 people downward-dogging on mats at a time.
BUZZARD POSE For relaxation with a stunning farm view – and little bit of a South Coast HeyRhody.com
adventure – look no further than South Coast Yoga’s Yoga & Brew at Buzzards Bay Brewing (BuzzardsBrew.com) in Westport. The class, which happens on August 19 and September 9, runs for an hour and will have you feeling blissed out by the time the brewery opens in the afternoon. The cost of the class gets you a pint of your choice, and a food truck will be on site to satisfy the appetite you’ll have worked up.
LET LOOSE With a building that’s over 11,500 square feet, The Purple Cat (PurpleCatWinery.com) in Chepachet is a perfect spot for letting loose. Every Wednesday at 6:30pm, get ready to shake it like you mean it at Zumba class, hosted in the building’s function room with enough space for 135
people. If winding down with yoga is more your style, catch a class every other Thursday at 7pm. Both classes are held outdoors when the weather is nice.
SAY “OM” With an expansive property of lush greenery and grapes, Newport Vineyards (NewportVineyards. com) is the perfect spot to get your vinyasa on. Hosted once a month by the vineyard with Thames Street Yoga & Shunya Studio, yogis can “wine” down and enjoy a wine tasting afterward. Guests must purchase a ticket beforehand, which covers the hour-and-15-minute yoga class and wine tasting samples. Classes are year-round and held indoors or outdoors, depending on the weather.

THE SUPERPOWERED BREAKFAST TREND Back in the day, the best you could do for a healthy(ish) breakfast was oatmeal with some fruit in it. But as we’ve become increasingly knowledgeable about better options for healthy eating, the breakfast game has totally changed. Fruit smoothies had a moment, then came green smoothies, packed with kale and other vegetables that are mostly only palatable in liquid form. This year, there’s a new trend emerging locally: acai bowls. Think of it like a smoothie in a bowl, with the maximum amount of antioxidants possible
in a single meal, and totally customizable to your tastes. The new wave of health-minded restaurants in Rhode Island, like Providence’s Kwench Juice Cafe (KwenchJuiceCafe.com), Keenwah in Newport (Facebook: Keenwah Super Food Eatery), Fuel Coffee Bar (HitTheLiquid.com) in Narragansett and Flat Waves (Flat-Waves.com) in Middletown and Kingston, are all serving their own versions of the superpowered meal. Try one out: running on acai feels a lot better than running on Dunkin’. The Acailicious Bowl from Kwench Juice Cafe in Providence has mixed acai, strawberry, raspberry, blueberry and banana

At Wright’s Farm (WrightsFarm. com) in Harrisville, the Galleshaw family has been serving up their classic, family-style meals to generations of hungry Rhode Islanders for over 50 years. The food is simple, but it’s simply delicious: plates of roasted chicken, freshbaked rolls, salad with Wright’s Farm signature dressing, pasta with Wright’s Farm’s own marinara and home style French fries. The original Iggy’s Doughboys & Chowder House (IggysDoughboys.com) opened in Narragansett in 1924, and generations of the HeyRhody.com
Gravino family have been delivering their iconic clam shack fare ever since. Now, the restaurant has two additional locations in Warwick, plus a creamery. At Luigi’s (LuigisGourmet.com), three generations of the Battista family have been serving hungry guests for over 40 years – and they keep coming back to Johnston for more. Think handmade pasta, classic Italian dishes and a huge to-go gourmet store serving sandwiches and prepared dinners. What started as a dining cart in
East Greenwich over a century ago is now Jigger’s Hill and Harbour Diner (JiggersDiner.com). The restaurant, now in a restored diner car, serves delicious twists on classic breakfast and lunch dishes, including johnnycakes, the most classic Rhode Island food of all. On Providence’s West Side, La Mei Hot Pot (LaMeiHotPot.com) offers authentic Sichuan cuisine that goes way beyond the Chinese food you’re used to. Cook it yourself at the table in a hot pot, or try one of their prepared dishes like Chicken with Red Pine Mushroom Stew and Preserved Duck Egg with Tofu Salad. Pasquale Iliano was born and raised in Naples, and trained there as a chef. Now, he recreates Neapolitan cuisine at Pasquale’s Pizzeria Napoletana (Pasquales PizzeriaRI.com) in Wakefield, with all ingredients imported from Italy. Pizzas like the D.O.P. – with Piennolo tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella from the Campania region, EVOO and basil leaves – are cooked in two

Tong-D (TongDSK.com) in South Kingstown is South County’s only Thai restaurant, and serves some of the most authentic cuisine in the state, like Spicy Holy Basil Chicken with Fried Egg and spicy green, coconut red and peanut massaman curries. There’s a sister restaurant in Barrington, with another coming in Providence later this year. Two brothers opened Mosaic Restaurant (MosaicRestaurantRI.com) in Cranston to recreate their families’ Syrian recipes. The only Syrian restaurant in the state, Mosaic serves classic dishes like Kibbeh, Kofta and Shawerma. In East Providence, Madeira (MadeiraRestaurant.com) has been serving traditional Portuguese cuisine for 30 years. Think Camarao (Shrimp) Mozambique, Mariscada seafood stew and Bife a Casa. Drink Trend: Aged Cocktails Barrel- and bottle-aged cocktails prove that good things come to those who wait
Our local cocktail game is on point - but this year, bartenders have been raising the stakes. Barrel-and bottle-aging cocktails brings a whole new (smooth and mellow) dimension to your ordinary libations. Despite its name, Fluke Wine Bar (FlukeWineBar.com) in Newport serves some of the best cocktails in the City by the Sea. They bottleage three different libations: the Bottle-Aged Manhattan, with Woodford Reserve Bourbon, Carpano Antica Vermouth and Woodfordspiced cherry bitters; the Rhum-attan, with Babancourt 3 Star Rhum, grapefruit-infused Punt y Mes and bitters; and the Negroni, with Plymouth Gin, Aperol and Berto Vermouth. KG Kitchen Bar (KGKitchenBar.com) is a new entry to the food scene on Hope Street in Providence. Their Barrel-Aged Manhattan takes Pendleton Whiskey, Aperol and Dolin Rouge, and mellows them together to smooth out the bitter amaro flavors and create a smooth drinking experience. The Dorrance (TheDorrance.com) is one of the standard bearers for great cocktails in Providence. Their Bottle-Aged Manhattan elevates the classic cocktail, combining Rittenhouse Rye, Cocchi di Torino, Sweet Vermouth and Angostura Bitters. In Pawtuxet Village, Basta (BastaOnBroad.
com) takes their cocktails up a notch by aging two in barrels. Their barrel-aged Negroni takes house-infused Pineapple Campari, London Dry Gin and Carpano Antica, and ages them together for two weeks to let the flavors mellow together in this dry Italian classic. Their Blood Orange Manhattan is aged for a month, with Bulleit Rye, Carpano Antica, Luxardo MarS U M M E R F L AV O R S aschino and Blood Orange Bitters. Besos (BesosKitchenAndCocktails.com) in East Greenwich brings some Prohibition-era excitement to their cocktail menu, offering their own house-made Bathtub Gin. Guests can choose from three flavor profiles – light and citrusy, rich and smooth or refreshing and bubbly - and the bartenders will concoct a cocktail to match, using their secret house infusion. At The Boat House (BoatHouseTiverton.com) in Tiverton, they take their nautical nature seriously. Their mellower version of a Manhattan is Ocean State-inspired. The Harbor Cask combines Newport-made Thomas Tew Rum with orange liqueur, sweet vermouth and bitters, then aged in-house and served with a cherry and orange peel.

Rick’s Roadhouse (RicksRoadhouseRI.com) in Providence’s Jewelry District has one of the best whiskey selections in the state, and has something fun happening nearly every night. The Providence legend is hands-down one of this state’s favorite pizza restaurants, and has been since it opened on Federal Hill in 1953. And the more things have changed (for the better) in the capital city, the more traditions and values have stayed the same at Caserta. As the saying goes, you’re not eating pizza if it’s not

Be it dine in or take out, the out-of-this-world Caserta experience is always a memorable one.

There are spinach pies, and then there’s the Wimpy Skippy. The Caserta original is famous in Rhode Island and beyond, and for good reason: it’s simply delicious. Here, an ordinary spinach pie is made extraordinary with its unique homemade Italian blend of mozzarella cheese, pepperoni and black olives. Another authentic house speciality is their infamous Pig in a Blanket, dough rolled with sweet Italian sausage and tomato sauce. Add green peppers and it’s a Pepper Pig.

CBRIDE’S PUB, a local favorite in the heart of Wayland Square, is full of unexpected surprises. Housed in the former garage of a funeral home, the spot serves crowd-pleasing American and Irish comfort food. Brothers Mark and Bob Russell, owners of the funeral home, were inspired to open a restaurant during a family trip to Ireland when they came across a pub named McBride’s. Behind the pub was a funeral home with the same name, and also owned by brothers. With a vision to bring great pub fare stateside, they repurposed the underused garage space to create the lively pub. Their sizeable menu offers delicious pub food with an Irish twist, like the Irish Nachos, Angus Beef Sliders, Fish and Chips and Corned Beef and Cabbage. Housemade desserts, like Agnes McBride’s Apple Pie, are devilishly good.

Of Land and Sea Coastal New England cooking is the charm at Bluewater Bar + Grill
T
here’s plenty of ways to be charmed by BLUEWATER BAR + GRILL, an offthe-beaten-path gem nestled near the Barrington Yacht Club. An East Bay favorite for years, the waterfront restaurant recently unveiled a chic, nautically-inspired renovation. The interior – a mix of modern and classic New England – beautifully complements the cuisine. With a focus on locally-sourced ingredients from nearby waters, farms and their own garden, the menu features signature dishes that highlight the best of the season’s bounty. Fresh seafood, pasta, burgers, grilled pizza, steaks and free-range chicken entrees are just a sampling of the expansive menu. Inspired by the seasons, the chefs modify signature dishes a few times a year to highlight fresh-picked ingredients. The scratch kitchen also creates one-ofa-kind daily specials that truly showcase Bluewater’s farm-to-table commitment. In addition, more vegetarian, gluten-free and healthy options are being added by the creative (and also vegan) chef. Casual atmosphere yet upscale cuisine, a dining experience here is just right.

t LUIGI’S, three generations of the Battista family have been serving hungry guests for over 40 years - and they keep coming back for more. Maybe it’s because of the thoughtful details of their cuisine, like handmade spaghetti and gnocchi. Maybe it’s because all of the desserts are made fresh, in house. Most likely, it’s because of Chef Ralph Battista’s perfectly authentic Italian cuisine, ranging from classics like
Frutti di Mare and Pappardelle Bolognese to healthy selections from the Amalfi Coast, like Grilled Chicken Caprese and Amalfi Coast Roasted Scrod. Pair all of that with craft cocktails like a Tuscan Pear Martini or Sicilian Lemonade, and enjoy a handmade cannoli or some tiramisu for dessert. Their loyalty app even rewards diners for coming back to enjoy again. Does it get any better?

ross the road and head to the state’s favorite chicken restaurant, WRIGHT’S FARM. The Galleshaw family has been serving up their award winning, family-style meals to generations of hungry Rhode Islanders for over 50 years. The food is simple, but it’s simply delicious: plates of slow-baked chicken, fresh-baked rolls, salad with Wright’s Farm signature dressing, pasta with Wright’s Farm’s own marinara and home style French fries. Adding a sirloin steak is optional. It’s the kind of place that’s easy to go with a big group, and relaxed enough for you to sit and enjoy – as many plates as you like, because they keep bringing food as long as you keep eating it. Started from Scratch At the beginning, it was just one small restaurant. Anthony and Tina Tomaselli, then a young couple, shared a vision and strong desire to shape their own future. Today, with three locations and over 100 team members lead by Tina’s brother Mark Blanchard and second generation Tomasellis Anthony and Tara, T’s looks forward to sharing their journey for another 35 years with the same passion that drove the early days.

Weekend Upgrade Eleven Forty Nine takes Sunday brunch to a whole new level

T
here is consistently great dining, and then there’s ELEVEN FORTY NINE RESTAURANT. Not many get it all right the way Eleven Forty Nine does, and has masterfully done since it opened ten years ago. The sizeable restaurant – with a gorgeous collection of dining rooms, private spaces and a metropolitan-style lounge – hits that sweet spot between upscale and casual. The service from the detail-obsessed waitstaff though, is all fine dining level. There’s no better way to get a feel for this dining experience than with their Sunday brunch.
Nothing short of spectacular, the brunch features a seemingly endless buffet, made-to-order omelets, pasta and Benedicts, and a carving station with prime rib, turkey or pork loin. Belgian waffles, French toast, baked haddock, chicken marsala, salads, desserts... the options go on and on. The culinary team delivers the same level of exceptional cuisine every day, handcrafting an expansive selection of seafood, prime cuts of meat, pasta, burgers, vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. Be it lunch, dinner, brunch or cocktails at the bar, an experience here is always remarkable.
2 Braised Short Rib Slow cooked and served with avocado whipped potatoes 3 Chicken Milanese Lemon, arugula, cherry tomatoes and shaved Parmesan 4 Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf Brown sugar ketchup gravy, haricot verts and whipped potatoes 5 Basil Crusted Cod Fennel, broccolini, polenta and heirloom tomatoes in tomato broth
Sip in the Season
>> The handcrafted cocktails are always in season
The kitchen isn’t the only team at Eleven Forty Nine that is inspired by the seasons; the bar also takes a cue from the weather. The speciality cocktail menu features a creative and seasonal line-up martinis, margaritas and sangria. In the summer, it’s all about fruitinfused and tropical tasting libations. Come fall and winter, look for ingredients like apple cider, cinnamon and peppermint. Reasons to Try Aquilante’s Bistro and Tavern
1 The food is amazing. Italian favorites, but with modern touches. “We serve traditional Italian with a unique twist,” says co-owner Mary Aquilante. The menu is full of grilled pizza, pasta, seafood, steak, chicken and veal - both in classics like saltimbocca and francese, and with new, exciting flavors. Think Chicken Sienna, sauteed with artichoke hearts, roasted red peppers, olives, lemon butter and wine; or Marie Antoinette, which is eggplant parmesan with meatballs and sausage. 2 It’s run by a husband and wife duo. Owner Mary and John Aquilante started the restaurant seven years ago. John is in the kitchen, and Mary runs the front of house. Maybe that’s why the restaurant has such a welcoming, family vibe to it. 3 They’re so popular, they had to move to a bigger location. “We outgrew our space,” Mary says. “Three years ago we moved, and doubled the number of people we can seat.” Hungry customers come back again and again for their creative Italian comfort food. They can also host private events of up to 50 people, for any special occasion or family gathering.
Problems in the kitchen got you down? No worries! Our experienced technicians have been servicing restaurant and home kitchens for over 85 years.

changes according to what’s fresh and in season.” Seeing what’s new that day is just one more good reason to come back again and again.
5 They’re adding brunch in the fall. In addition to their current weekday lunch and daily dinner service, Aquilante’s is adding Sunday brunch in October. On the menu will be creative options like lobster benedict

Reasons To Go To Feast Sandwich Company
1 It’s changing the dining scene. When Feast Sandwich Company opened its doors in December, the local dining scene was immediately changed, and for the better. Joining an already impressive line-up of great restaurants on East Greenwich’s Main Street, Feast offered a brand new experience – classic sandwiches with a major gourmet makeover. The simple yet amazing menu of burgers, hotdogs, pressed sandwiches and salads instantly won over locals and not-so-locals. Open less than a year, Feast has also won over critics, taking home the top award at RI Food Fight’s Big Burger Blowout, three Best of Rhode Island nods from RI Monthly and recognized by Trip Advisor for its Best American Cuisine. 2 Local ingredients are the focus. Everything is delicious here because it’s all made in the scratch kitchen with the highest quality ingredients. Locally-sourced farm and specialty foods are utilized throughout the menu, and can be savored with every juicy bite.
zoeandcompany.com
r u o y t Pu Up! s e k u D
3 It’s gourmet food for everyday people. Feast might be next-level gourmet, but the mood here is still laid-back and casual. Open every day, their offerings have something tasty for everyone, including a kids menu, gluten-free options, healthy salads and more. 4 Sandwiches are much better with cold drinks. The beer and wine selection is just as curated as the food here. A great selection of local craft beers – all from the Northeast – is available, as is wines by the glass. Local craft sodas blend classic flavors like vanilla and black cherry with unexpected flavors and herbs.
5 The ordinary is extraordinary. If the devil is in the details, then a meal here must be sinful. House-made dressings, condiments and spice blends make all the difference here. Every dish includes a side of their signature sauce, a tangy blend of red pepper and basil. The handcrafted burgers are topped with unexpected ingredients, like grilled pineapple, avocado, roasted pulled pork and fried eggs. The appetizers range from fried pickles to poutine. Daily seasonal specials are creatively made with in-season finds, and shared only with their Instagram followers. Every item on the menu is under $15. The list goes on and on… Feast is simply doing everything right.

What started in 1917 - 100 years ago! - as a little lunch cart is now a dining institution, serving hungry crowds every day. The Best Pizza This Side of Italy Pasquale’s Pizzeria Napoletana brings Naples to South County
Must-Try Neapolitan Pies D.O.P Piennolo tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella from Campania region, EVOO and basil leaves Carbonara Crispy pancetta, egg, cream and mozzarella Calabria Spicy sopressata, mozzarella, San Marzano and EVOO Ripieno Napoletano Stuffed with fior di latte, ricotta, ricotta, prosciutto, salami and basil >> Pasquale’s pizza was voted one of the best in the US by Italy’s top food magazine
I
t’s not an overstatement to say that PASQUALE’S PIZZERIA NAPOLETANA has the most authenticially Italian pizza in the state. Chef-owner Pasquale Iliano was raised in Italy and trained as a chef in Naples, at the Neapolitan Pizza Academy. “I started working in kitchens at 15, at some of the most recognized restaurants in Naples,” he says. “That’s where I learned most of my techniques that I use
here, and learned my recipes.” His pizzas are baked in an ultra-hot brick oven, built in Naples, and are ready in two minutes each. Pasquale imports nearly every ingredient in his kitchen from Italy – everything from 00 flour to Sicilian sea salt, and piennolo tomatoes grown on Mount Vesuvius. “I want to be an ambassador of Naples,” Pasquale says. “That’s my fun.”
Ninco Nanco Imported buffalo mozzarella, yellow piennolo sauce and sweet capicolla Arturo Fior di latte, EVOO, prosciutto, arugula and shaved parmigiano
Beyond Pizza GET A PIZZA THIS Pasquale’s is only one of 600 restaurants in the world to be certified by Associazione Vera Pizza Napoletana, an association in Naples that preserves authenticity of true Neapolitan pizza.
Because one cannot live on pizza alone - though one can and maybe should try - Pasquale’s serves other delicious Italian options, all made with a simplicity and elegance that lets the quality of the ingredients shine through, like Spaghetti Pomodoro, Linguine alla Vongole and Pasta e Fagiole, paired with exclusive wine from Sorrento. They also serve New York and Grandma-style pizza to go (the Neapolitan is dine-in only) and sandwiches.

P
HIL’S GRILLE is a totally unique dining destination in Wakefield. Inside the Main Street building there are two restaurants: a downstairs diner serving breakfast and lunch favorites, and an upstairs restaurant serving more upscale brunch, lunch and dinner. The star of the show, though, is the third dining area – the third floor roof deck,
AT THE BREAKFAST COUNTER Creative omelets, pancakes and French toast are on the breakfast menu at Phil’s Diner. There’s even a $2.75 early bird special for very early risers.
overlooking scenic downtown Wakefield. Food from both restaurants is available upstairs on the deck, which also has a bar perfect for enjoying a beverage. It’s a scientific fact: cocktails taste better when enjoyed outside. It’s a good thing the bartenders at Phil’s get creative with specialty cocktails so there’s always something new to try.
4 A Mermaid’s Mojito White rum, fresh lime, mint, Clement Sirop de Canne and club soda 5 Phil’s Old Fashioned Sons of Liberty Battle Cry Whiskey, fresh muddled fruit, soda and bitters
Lofty Dining Above the first floor diner, The Loft serves creative brunch, lunch and dinner daily. Brunch has options like Salmon and Eggs – roasted salmon topped with basil pesto and panko, served with two eggs and homefries. For lunch, try their signature Fish and Chips, or the Cowboy Burger, with barbecue sauce, cheddar, bacon and onion rings on top. Lots of seafood and creative comfort food is on the dinner menu, but make sure to stop by on a weekend for Prime Rib, served in Queen and Caveman cuts, with Yorkshire Pudding.
