Dive Into Summer We waited through a very long spring - if you can call
water sports, from beach bag essentials to can’t-miss
it a spring! - but we’ve made it. It’s finally summer, and
festivals. And speaking of the beach (because who
it’s up to us to make the most of it. From now until
isn’t at this time of year?), we’ve got the rundown on
September, it’s nothing but sunny days, salty air and
which are the very best, no matter if you’re looking
sandy skin. In this issue, we’ve got the best of what
for the best one for kids or the one where you can im-
the season has to offer: from waterfront restaurants to
merse yourself in total serenity. It’s going to be a great
yoga on the beach, from the state’s best clam cakes to
summer. Get out there and enjoy it.

From rooftop rosé to riveting reads, here’s your guide to summer in the Ocean State
D OWN ON THE WIND FARM The Block Island Wind Farm – the first off-shore wind farm in the country, no big deal – is a technical marvel most of us have only appreciated from afar. Not this summer. Adventure seekers and green energy boosters can experience the
towering turbines on the Block Island Ferry’s Wind Farm Tours (BIWindFarmTours.com) or Block Island Parasailing’s Wind Farm Tour (BlockIslandParasail.com). Get up close – but not too close – with the future of renewable energy.

Raise the Roof(top) Grab a drink with a view from these elevated cocktail destinations
The rooftop patio at Hotel Viking in Newport
Photo (top) courtesy of Hotel Viking, (bottom) by Tim Siekiera
Is the best way to rosé all day al fresco style? Find out at the Ocean State’s best rooftop decks, whether you prefer a chic urban oasis or a laid-back coastal enclave. The Roof Deck at Vanderbilt Grace (GraceHotels. com) transforms one of Newport’s loveliest decks into a “champagne rooftop” this summer. Watch the sun say goodnight over Narragansett Bay as sailboats saunter by in the distance. Tiffany blue cushions, comfy Adirondack chairs and elegant ambience – sit back and enjoy the good life. You’ll be hard pressed to find a “Wakefieldian” who doesn’t rush to Phil’s Main Street Grille (PhilsMainStreetGrille.com) as soon as the weather cooperates. Enjoy Phil’s full breakfast, lunch or dinner menu overlooking Main Street or perch yourself at the bar placed squarely in the heart of all the upper-deck action. Multiple bars keep the drinks flowing at the Coast Guard House (TheCoastGuardHouse.com) in Narragansett. You can work on your tan while savoring lunch or dinner from the brand-new kitchen. Enjoy live music Monday through Thursday and buck-a-shuck oysters with sparkling wine pairings on weekdays. With varnished wood walls, porthole lighting and the stars overhead, you might think you’re on a yacht’s aft deck when you sit back and relax at The Crow’s Nest at Benjamin’s (BenjaminsRawBar.com) in Newport. Keep an eye out for pineapple or other fruit infusing vodka behind the bar. The Hotel Viking (HotelViking.com) is a landmark in the City by the Sea, and the rooftop patio overlooks all of its coastal splendor. If you want a taste of
HeyRhody.com
local flavor, try the “Arrrrrrrr!!!!!!!,” featuring Newport’s own Thomas Tew Rum, orange curaçao and Amaretto mixed with a splash of pineapple juice, soda water and a squeeze of lime – with a cherry on top. Choose your own al fresco adventure at Newport’s Midtown Oyster Bar (MidtownOyster.com). The second-floor “Burgee Deck” overlooks Newport’s bustling Thames Street. The third floor Loft Deck, Midtown’s highest point, offers views of Narragansett Bay and a cooling breeze, plus tables in this intimate space
have umbrellas for sun protection. Despite being under the stars, the capital city’s only rooftop lounge Rooftop at the Providence G (RooftopAtTheG.com) and restaurant is open year-round. On the patio, glowing fire pits add both warmth and ambiance as you savor craft cocktails, seasonal craft brews or a selection from the well-considered wine list while hovering seven stories above the heart of Providence. –Andrea E. RHODY HAPPENINGS
Summer Rhody Reading List Your beach bag isn’t complete without these five local books
Forks, Knives and Spoons With all the sights and sounds of the ‘80s to pull you into her debut novel, Rhode Island resident Leah DeCesare has produced a crowd pleaser with her coming-of-age novel. As Amy York heads off to her freshman year at Syracuse, her father has a heart-to-heart with her. He tells her that there are three kinds of guys – forks, knives and spoons – and goes on to explain the characteristics associated with each. Armed with this neat classification system, Amy navigates her way through college and beyond. DeCesare is a natural storyteller and her passion, humor and ear for dialogue make this book a delicious treat.
Since We Fell Providence has a supporting role in Dennis Lehane’s latest novel, Since We Fell. Set mostly in the Boston area, readers will be familiar with the drive to Providence that is central to one of the many plot twists in this suspenseful, psychological drama. At the center of the novel we meet Rachel Childs, a once successful journalist who is putting her life back together after an on-air meltdown. Lehane nails it with his first female narrator. This is one thrilling and bumpy ride.
Exes Writing from the heart of the place where he grew up is central to Max Winter’s debut, Exes. Providence in the 90’s, with all its characters, humor and tension, is a veritable breeding ground for complicated, gritty storytelling at its best. This is a haunting tale of brothers and the people in the community who bear witness to their tragedy and beauty, often at the same time. Readers will appreciate the familiar landmarks and the local lingo along with some of the finest storytelling today. Winter will join the Point Street Reading Series (Facebook: Point Street Reading Series) on June 20.
Down City: A Daughter’s Story of Love, Memory, and Murder If ever there were a Rhode Island story, Leah Carroll’s debut memoir tops the list. Carroll does an incredible job blending storytelling with facts, balancing emotional distance and keeping herself in the narrative at the same time. Carroll was four years old when her mother was brutally murdered by two drug dealers with mafia connections. Her father, with demons of his own, was dead by the time she was 18. Piecing together their story to form her own is at the heart of this gorgeous and brave book.
Rebel Mother: My Childhood Chasing The Revolution Think your childhood was a little unusual? Well, you might think again after reading Brown University professor Peter Andreas’ riveting and harrowing memoir about life with his mother (formerly a 1950s housewife from a small Mennonite town) who became a radical feminist and took her youngest son, Peter, wherever she went. This even included kidnapping and living in several different states and five countries with multiple husbands and countless lovers. Andreas attended more schools and lived in more homes in his young life than many will in a lifetime. From suburban American communities to Chile and Peru, this is the stuff of fiction, but it’s true. –Robin Kall

Sail into Summer Five ways to get out on the high and not-so-high seas Sail, Sip and Sight-See on the Rum Runner II Cruise Newport’s (CruiseNewport.com) waterfront on a historic motor yacht, originally built to smuggle cases of rum during the height of prohibition. Tour area lighthouses while enjoying mimosas, croissants and light morning jazz. For a more in-depth experience, the East Passage Express is a narrated tour full of scenic views, cruising past historic Fort Adams as well as the sprawling waterfront estates dotting Newport’s coastline. You’ll also cruise by the private yachts docked in Newport Harbor, some with celebs aboard – wave hello to Billy Joel, Bono or Jimmy Buffett having a cheese(less) pizza strip in paradise. Take the Most Lit Lighthouse Tour in RI with Save The Bay If lighthouses turn you “on,” the seven-hour Ultimate Lighthouse Tour is right in your wheelhouse. From Providence to Newport and back, enjoy expert narration from Save The Bay (SaveBay.org) educators while cruising past 20 lighthouse sites in Narragansett Bay. be well underway, but here at home the action is just getting started, and we’re not just talking about the PawSox. June marks the beginning of the 2017 season for the New England Collegiate Baseball League, a nationally regarded, 13-team amateur league that features two Rhode Island squads to root for. On Aquidneck Island we’ve got the Newport Gulls (NewportGulls.com), who call Cardines Field on America’s Cup Avenue home. The Gulls lead the NECBL in championship wins with six so far, and longtime fans
may have recognized former Gull Danny Otero pitching for the Indians in last year’s World Series. The Ocean State Waves (OceanStateWaves.com) are based (ha!) out of Old Mountain Field in South Kingstown. One of the younger teams in the league, the Waves sent nine players to the major league in the 2016 MLB draft. For a big Rhody showdown, be sure to save the date for one of six matches between these two Rhode Island sluggers. No matter which team you’re root, root, rooting for, we can all agree that there’s no better way to spend a summer night than at a ballgame. –Tony Pacitti Summer Guide 2017 |

Paddle Into the Wild One writer discovers Rhode Island’s flora and fauna by kayak
There’s more to getting on the water in the Ocean State than just the ocean. Narrow River, for example, offers a wealth of the life aquatic and for more than 25 years Narrow River Kayaks (NarrowRiverKayaks.com) has been helping paddlers get out and discover it. Owner Jason Considine took me out for a guided eco tour along with Narrow River Kayaks’ Master Guide and Naturalist Ron Wofford, a Florida native who splits his year between Narrow River in the summer and the Everglades in the winter. Over the course of several hours on the river, Jason and Ron provided an eco-commentary while we paddled and explored the John H. Chafee Natural Wildlife Refuge. Gorgeous egrets stood at the water’s edge, soaring gracefully to a safer distance once we got close. Ospreys called out from their perches high up above the river. Every now and again the head of a cormorant would pop up from below the surface, and later we saw a whole mess of them drying their wings out in the sun. Around them were the shells of devoured marine life, the remains of the freshest all-you-can-eat seafood buffet in Narragansett.

Kayak Centre (KayakCentre.com) in Wickford offers sunset and coastal tours, East Coast Paddle Sports (ECPaddleSports.com) in East Greenwich and Wakefield gets zen with standup paddleboard yoga and Pond and Beyond Kayak (PondAndBeyondKayak.com) on Block Island explores the wildlife of the Great Salt Pond.
Narrow River Kayaks’ guided nature tour “It’s like a living classroom,” Ron said as we drifted along. Jason, who was a teacher before taking over Narrow River Kayaks, sees it that way too. “I’ve always enjoyed Narrow River, ever since I was a little kid,” he says. “I enjoy being able to take advantage of the natural surroundings, getting people out on the water to teach them about the ecosystem and give them an opportunity to appreciate it.” Of course if you just want to rent a kayak for a few hours, pack a picnic and paddle to the mouth of the river for a day on the beach, you can. But if you ask me, there’s a lot going on under the water, in the marsh grass and in the sky that you might miss out on. –Tony Pacitti
Summer Museums Beautiful (and strange) attractions are open for one season only Summers are for the
beach, but if you need to get out of the sun – just for a little while – we’d recommend a day at the museum. Quirky and rich in history, this is the kind of summertime educational experience we can get behind. Enjoy the cool air off the bay as you learn about one of the oldest lighthouses in the entire country at the Beavertail Lighthouse Museum (BeaverTail.org) in Jamestown. Get up close with history through the artifacts that await at this bright little gem. The Southeast Light (BlockIslandInfo.com) on Block Island is a perfect place to visit right now. Towering over 200 feet above the water atop the Mohegan Bluffs, this lighthouse is a spectacle to witness both at a distance and from inside. The South County Museum (SouthCountyMuseum.org) in Narragansett comes to life in the summertime. With a collection of over 20,000 pieces, including antique carriages and cars, 19th-century letterpresses and a blacksmith’s forge, this is a history buff ’s paradise. HeyRhody.com
The Herreshoff Museum (Herreshoff.org) in Bristol is perfect for learning the history of sailing, whether your interest is in shipbuilding, sailboat racing or the Herreshoff ’s contributions to the Navy. Sit in on summer lectures or sign up for sailing lessons to really immerse yourself in the experience. See the birthplace and family home of famed portrait artist Gilbert Stuart (GilbertStuartMuseum.org) in Saunderstown, which now serves as a museum of period life and industry. Furnished with antiques, the mill/home is an awe-inspiring visit that is perfect for a summer adventure back in time. It wouldn’t be Rhode Island without something weird, so spice up your summer with a visit to Musee Patamecanique (MuseePata. org). This appointment-only museum of curiosities is for groups, because with wild displays like a bumblebee’s dream machine or a chandelier of singing animatronics, you’ll need a friend to pinch you every so often. –Jake Turpin

FOURTH OF JULY FUN SEA FOOD, EAT IT The Ocean State is the best place for a lot of things, but it’s the absolute best for fresh-offthe-boat seafood. Find out how much you can handle at the Charlestown Seafood Festival (CharlestownRIChamber.com) from August 4-6, where there will be lobsters, chowder, shellfish and just about every other ocean delicacy available for your gastronomic pleasure, plus amusement park rides, a midway and entertainment.
DISCOVER VINTAGE TREASURES
It’s a sure sign of summer when the fresh red, white and blue stripes appear on Hope Street. Thousands of people come from far and wide for the Bristol Fourth of July Parade – this year is the 232nd consecutive one! - but true patriots know that in Bristol, the celebration is much bigger than one day. Leading up to the main event (July4thBristolRI.com) are weeks of fun, including 14 days of concerts in Independence Park starting on June 20, a carnival, fireworks, the Fourth of July ball and tons more events. The Pawtucket Red Sox (PawSox.com) are known for their larger-than-life Independence Day celebrations. This year, the fireworks are happening after the game on July 1 vs. Scranton Wilkes-Barre.
The Little Compton Antiques Festival (PreserveRI.org) is turning ten this summer, and in addition to the more than 25 antiques dealers on hand at the Little Compton Historical Society on August 5, they’re adding a Classic Auto Show. Browse through vintage items in need of a new home, and daydream about how sweet that classic car would look in your garage.
DANCE THROUGH SUMMER Newport Waterfront Events (NewportWaterfrontEvents.com) is now calling Bold Point Park in East Providence home, and bringing the Reggae Festival on August 12, a Blues and BBQ Festival on August 26 and more awesome events into the fall. GET DOWN ON THE FARM The Washington County Fair (WashingtonCountyFair-RI.com) has been going strong since 1967. The festival happens August 16-20 in Richmond, and features amusement park rides, tons of music and games, and agricultural and livestock contests - plus a Battle of the Fishermen.
BRING LOVECRAFT TO LIFE H. P. Lovecraft is Providence’s strangest native son, and NecronomiCon (NecronomiConProvidence.com) celebrates all things weird and wonderful about the famed horror writer. The convention, August 17-20 in Providence, includes free events for the curious public and things like the Erdrich Ball for the, shall we say, Cthulhu enthusiasts.
GET BACK TO YOUR MUSICAL ROOTS From September 1-3, celebrate the 20th year of the Rhythm and Roots Festival (RhythmAndRoots.com). The event happens in Ninigret Park in Charlestown, and this year is hosting huge acts like The Mavericks, Roseanne Cash and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy.
Narragansett’s 4th of July Independence Day Beach Party (NarragansettRI.gov) is an annual tradition. The festivities start in the afternoon with sand castle sculptures being built on Narragansett Town Beach by Sandtasia, then a performance by Brass Attack in the evening, followed by fireworks. Tons of places in Rhode Island host Fourth of July fireworks, including North Providence (NorthProvidenceRI.gov), East Providence (EastProvidenceRI.net), South Kingstown (SouthKingstownRI.com), Block Island (BlockIslandChamber.com), Newport (DiscoverNewport.org) and Warwick (VisitWarwickRI.com). Believe it or not, there’s more to summer in the Ocean State than the beach
OUR VACATION PARADISE Call it the great Block Island conundrum: The island is only 30 minutes away by boat, and yet most Rhode Islanders either have never visited, or haven’t been in way too many years. Not this year, Rhodies. This is the year you break out of your summer routine and explore the rest of the state, and our guide to summer day trips is here to help. We’ve taken six drive-worthy
locations (or, in the case of Block Island, sail-worthy), and broken them down into the essential summer components: what to see, what to eat, where to have fun and where to beach. There’s a reason tens of thousands of tourists pour into the Ocean State every July and August: We’re a bona fide vacation destination. It’s time to explore the rest of it.
S U M M E R D AY T R I P S
Summer in the City Providence, the state’s food and arts hub, is cool in any season
Home to our only zoo and the highest concentration of delicious restaurants, Providence is a no-brainer when it comes to having fun in the summertime.
In the summer, you don’t have time to waste indoors, even for watching movies. Movies on the Block (MoviesOnTheBlock.com) is upping their film cred this year, showing Dr. Strangelove (June 29), All the President’s Men (July 7), The Godfather (July 27), the timeless classic Dumb and Dumber (August 10) and Do the Right Thing (August 17). Movies in the Park (ProvidenceRI.com) offers a more kid-friendly alternative every other Friday, beginning July 14 with the animated animals-doing-karaoke movie Sing, followed by The Secret Life of Pets, A League of Their Own and E.T. The Providence Flea (ProvidenceFlea.com) is an urban flea market that happens every Sunday along South Water Street, selling everything from locally made T-shirts to vintage jewelry to terrariums. The Providence Artisans Market (Facebook: Providence Artisans Market) happens every Saturday at Lippitt Park in conjunction with the Lippitt Park Farmers Market (FarmFresh.org),
and offers up RI-made art, furniture, crafts and more.
GET ON THE WATER The Providence River Boat Company (ProvidenceRiverBoat.com) has been offering unique views of the city for 26 years. Take a sunset cruise, or get up close to WaterFire (but not too close). If you prefer to be more hands on with your high-seas adventures, the Community Boating Center (CommunityBoating.com) might be more up your alley. Their fleet of kayaks, dinghies and catamarans offer all kinds of options for leaving the life of a landlubber behind.
WATER + FIRE = MAGIC Summer in Providence isn’t summer without WaterFire (WaterFire. org). Lightings this summer are June 24, July 8, July 20, July 22 and August 5. If you want to really ramp up the romance, spring for a trip on the Providence River courtesy of La Gondola (GondolaRI.com). Each

of the 36-foot Venetian gondolas is piloted by a gondolier, complete with striped shirt and legit gondolier hat.
Feast With the Beast (June 24) and Brews at the Zoo (August 26) are both 21+ events.
THE ZOO CREW
A food truck, that is. Providence has the highest concentration of food trucks in the state, and it’s easy to find a time to enjoy them. Food Truck Fridays (FoodTrucksIn.com) at Roger Williams Park bring a rotating selection of up to 20 food trucks, along with live music and a beer garden. On the fourth Thursday evening of the month, trucks congregate in front of Providence City Hall , and gather every Sunday evening at The Hot Club (HotClubProv.com) for Sunday Funday. Expect to find anything from gourmet burgers at Rocket Fine Street Food (RocketFineStreetFood. com) to wild game at Open Season (Facebook: Open Season Truck) to Thai-style ice cream rolls from Mike’s Ice Truck (MikesIceTruck.com).
The Roger Williams Park Zoo (RWPZoo.org) is a great way to get up close with wildlife. Like really close. Where else in the city can you ride a camel (legally) or feed a giraffe? It’s also a great place to cut loose sans kids – Zoobilee:

It’s a mathematical probability that at least one weekend day will be rainy this summer. Keep your fingers crossed that it’s a Sunday, when the RISD Museum (RISDMuseum.org) has free admission. The Arcade (ArcadeProvidence.com) is also a good rainy day destination, with shopping, a restaurant and a coffee and whiskey bar. HeyRhody.com

One Day on Block Island Take a mini-vacation to Rhode Island’s island paradise
People come from all over the world to explore our
Enjoy a pineapple drink on the beach at Ballard’s Inn
tiny island, which has been named “one of the last great places” by The Nature Conservancy. Lucky for you, Block Island is only a half hour away, and it’s easy to make a day trip there feel like a real getaway.
The Block Island Ferry (BlockIslandFerry.com) drops you in Old Harbor, where there are lots of shops and restaurants. Many daytrippers don’t make it any further than here, but you’re no tourist and you’re not making that rookie mistake. In Old Harbor, there are lots of places close by to rent mopeds and bikes – but be warned, the island is very hilly, so a trip all the way to North Light (New-Shoreham.com) will work up a major sweat. You’ll probably want to opt for the motorized choice. On your explorations, make sure to take some time to appreciate the island scenery that makes Block Island such a coveted destination. Nearly half of Block Island is protected from development by organizations like the Block Island
Conservancy (BIConservancy.org), which offers resources on exploring hiking trails around the island. The Ocean View Foundation (OceanViewFoundation.org) leads guided nature tours daily in the summer. Don’t miss the Sacred Labyrinth (BlockIslandInfo.com), marked by a tiny sign off Corn Neck Road, where there is a walking meditation path, a tranquil sculpture garden and a real spirit of mindfulness. Abrams Animal Farm (Facebook: Abrams Animal Farm) is home to exotic birds, kangaroos, a camel, lemurs, water buffalo and a zeedonk – which is exactly what you think it is.
COCKTAIL AND CHILL If you’re going for ultimate relaxation, stop by Ballard’s Inn (BallardsBI.com). The restaurant has its own beach and serves food and
cocktails – in pineapples, no less – right on the sand. They also have live music every afternoon and evening in the summer, and are hosting some major events like Country Fest on July 6 and Rock Fest on September 9. For equally gorgeous views and less of a party vibe, park yourself in an Adirondack chair on the lawn of Spring House Hotel (SpringHouseBlockIsland.com) or The Atlantic Inn (AtlanticInn.com). Both have fine dining restaurants inside, but serve killer cocktails and small bites on the porch and lawn, with significantly relaxed views on attire.
ISLAND EATS The Oar (Facebook: The Oar) is a New Harbor restaurant that’s a must-try: their super-fresh menu includes sushi, and there are more tables outside with marina views than there are inside. Poor People’s Pub (PPPBI.com) serves gastropub fare, and its buzzworthy new sister restaurant TigerFish (Facebook: TigerFish) serves creative Asian fare. A great place to wait out those last minutes between the end of your day and your ferry is The National (NationalRI.com), which has great views of the harbor from its wraparound porch.
A Wagging Good Beach Day As though you needed more reasons to love the uncrowded beaches on Block Island, here are two: 1) they’re all free admission; and 2) leashed dogs are allowed at any time not just before and after lifeguard duty. Crescent Beach (BlockIslandInfo.com) is the biggest and most accessible of all of the island beaches, and has Benson Pavilion, which rents chairs and boogie boards. Drink in the view at the Atlantic Inn

Make a Splash in Newport With food and fun to spare, the City by the Sea turns it up this time of year
There’s so much to do in Newport that it’s hard to narrow it down to just one day of fun. You can’t really go wrong with anything you choose, but make sure you have the fundamentals taken care of: some salt water, some seafood and some sunshine.
When you’re going to be a tourist in Newport for the day, a stop at the Newport Mansions (NewportMansions.org) is practically required. While you’ve probably been to The Breakers before – though if it was on a school field trip, it’s time for another go-round – there are interesting things at the “smaller” mansions, too. Marble House has a Chinese tea house in the yard; The Elms has a classical sculpture garden. The thing to see this summer, though, is Pierre Cardin: 70 Years of Innovation at Rosecliff. The exhibition will feature 42 of the famed designer’s most iconic looks, starting in the 1950s and going all the way through 2016. On June 17, to celebrate his 95th birthday, Cardin will be in town to personally host a fashion runway show with StyleWeek in the great hall of The Breakers, complete with birthday cake and, in
true French style, champagne.
SAIL THE OPEN SEAS Well, the open seas of Newport Harbor. Even if you didn’t yacht in from the Hamptons, you can still experience a little maritime luxury. Bowen’s Wharf (BowensWharf. com) is the launching point for several harbor tours, like Sightsailing of Newport (SightSailing.com) and Adirondack II (Sail-Newport.com), which offers Champagne Sunset Tours. Newport Dinner Cruise (NewportDinnerCruise.com) does lunch and hors d’oeuvres excursions in addition to dinner, and Save the Bay (SaveBay.org) offers Lighthouse Tours from Fort Adams.
LIVE FROM NEWPORT You may or may not want to brave the crowds for Newport’s mega music festivals: the Folk Fest (NewportFolk.org), July 28-30, and the Jazz Fest (NewportJazz.org),
Gilded Age glamour at The Breakers

Seafood Paella at La Vasca
August 4-6. If you prefer a quieter scene, there’s a lot in Newport to keep you entertained, from weekend improv comedy shows by The Bit Players (BitPlayers.net) to dinner theatre at The Newport Playhouse (NewportPlayhouse.com) to live music at The Newport Blues Cafe (NewportBlues.com). Newport also has lots of cultural attractions, like the Newport Art Museum (NewportArtMuseum.org), the National Museum of American Illustration (AmericanIllustration. org), the Audrain Automobile Museum (AudrainAutoMuseum.org) and the International Tennis Hall of Fame (TennisFame.com). Explore them on a rainy day, or any day you
need a break from the beach.
DRINK LIKE A PIRATE Thomas Tew was English-born, but we adopted him as the “Rhode Island Pirate.” Drink to his memory at Newport Storm (NewportStorm. com), a brewery and distillery that offers tastings of their Rhody-inspired brews like ARIstotle and InfeRIority Complex, plus their boozy homage to Newport’s pirating history, Thomas Tew Rum. While Newport Vineyards (NewportVineyards. com) is technically in Middletown, their wines – and their gorgeous new tasting room and cafe – are worth the drive.
THE NEW GUARD OF RESTAURANTS Longtime favorite Newport restaurants like The Mooring (MooringRestaurant.com) and The Clarke Cooke House (Facebook: The Clarke Cooke House) will always draw crowds for their fresh, locally inspired fine dining. But a whole new crop of musttry restaurants have been on the tip of everyone’s tongue, in more ways than one. Winner Winner (WinnerWinnerNPT.com) serves up fried chicken, with creative, upscaled Southern sides. Revolving Door (RevolvingDoorRI.com) is an innovative concept: a different chef in residency every month, who brings a whole different menu and cooking style. La Vasca (LaVascaNewport.com) serves authentically European tapas from the Basque region of Spain. HeyRhody.com

Show Your Stripes in Bristol Discover the hidden gems in this charming coastal town
Everyone talks about Bristol when Independence Day rolls around, but there’s so much more to the seaside town than a parade.
One of the great things about Bristol is that even though it feels a million miles away – in a good way – the town is only 14.5 miles from Providence. That is, as long as you travel along the East Bay Bike Path. The scenic, relatively flat ride takes you from India Point Park on Providence’s East Side to Independence Park in Bristol. Pick up the path at any midpoint, like the Blount Clam Shack (BlountClamShack.com) in Crescent Park in East Providence, for an easier and shorter ride.
STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER - LITERALLY Bristol calls itself America’s Most Patriotic Town for a reason: They’ve been hosting a Fourth of July Parade (FourthOfJulyBristolRI.com) since 1785. But there’s a lot more celebrating in Bristol than just the parade. Festivities start on June 14 and include two weeks of outdoor
concerts, a gala ball, a carnival, fireworks and lots more.
EXPLORING THE TOWN Downtown Bristol, along Thames and Hope Streets, is the kind of place you’re going to want to spend some time exploring. The Mint Gallery (TheMintGallery.com) has local art, and Kate and Company (KateAnd-Company.com) offers a selection of delicious and stylish gifts. Bristol is also a destination for antiquers, with shops like Alfred’s (AlfredsConsignments.com) and The Foolish Fox (FoolishFox.com). All that shopping will probably make you hungry, and there are a lot of delicious options in just a few blocks. On summer mornings, there will probably be a line out the door at Beehive Cafe (TheBeehiveCafe. com) for their house-made treats. Bristol Oyster Bar (BristolOysterBar. com) is the go-to place for super fresh seafood. Statesman Tavern
Bristol Harbor from Independence Park
(StatesmanTavern.com) serves inspired gastropub fare and cocktails. DeWolf Tavern (DeWolfTavern.com) is a classic for a reason: Make sure to try their lobster popover.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS With its rocky waterfront and small beach, plus green spaces perfect for flying kites, Colt State Park (RIParks.com) is a must-visit. To explore a little more nature, take the kids to the Audubon Environmental Education Center (ASRI.org), which is a natural history museum and aquarium with walking trails through the McIntosh Wildlife Refuge. Both are easily accessible from the Bike Path. For serious garden envy, visit Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and
Arboretum (Blithewold.org), which has literally thousands of plants on display throughout the property, and hosts events like gardening workshops, teas and yoga in the garden. Mount Hope Farm (MountHopeFarm.org) is a 325-year-old country estate that’s home to heritage animal breeds and one of the best farmers markets in the state, which happens every Saturday morning year-round. Though it’s technically part of Portsmouth, the only way to get to Prudence Island (PortsmouthRI. com) is via the ferry at Bristol’s Church Street Wharf. The short ride will get you to a totally unspoiled island where there is one store, 150 year-round residents and tons of beach and wilderness to explore.

Ride the Waves to Narragansett The state’s beachiest town has sun and sand for days
When you think “summer in Rhode Island,” chances are you’re picturing yourself in a beach chair somewhere in Narragansett, clam cakes and a Del’s in hand. This season, make it a point to venture away from your old summer habits and try something new in this quintessentially seaside town.
BEACH AND MORE BEACH
Narragansett Town Beach
THE GREAT CLAM SHACK DEBATE
STORM THE TOWERS There are two ways to get into the Narragansett Towers: score an invite to a wedding there (definitely don’t crash one, or at least don’t tell anyone we suggested that), or go to their Ballroom Dancing Lessons (TheTowersRI.com) on Wednesday nights – no partner required.
46
| Summer Guide 2017
The question isn’t whether you’re going to a clam shack when you visit Narragansett; it’s which one you’re going to visit. The closest to Town Beach is Monahan’s (MonahansRI.com), but just a couple of minutes further down Ocean Road are Aunt Carrie’s (AuntCarriesRI. com) and Iggy’s Doughboys and Clam Shack (IggysDoughboys.com), which are right across the street from each other. There’s a similar rivalry in Galilee: Rhody food icons George’s of Galilee (GeorgesOfGalilee.com) and Champlin’s Seafood (Champlins.com), are so close together they share a parking lot. Every Rhode Islander has a preference, and every Rhode Islander is sure everyone else’s is wrong.
BEYOND THE BEACH South County Museum (SouthCountyMuseum.org) is a summer-only attraction that features a living history farm (including a flock of heritage Rhode Island Red chickens, the state bird), maritime gallery, print shop, one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop and more. Their collection comprises more than 20,000 objects, from pre-European settlement to the 1950s. Casey Farm (HistoricNewEngland. org), a mid-18th-century homestead, is still a working organic farm and hosts one of the area’s largest farmers markets on Saturday mornings in the summer. They offer guided tours of the property during the warm weather. Most Friday evenings throughout
the summer, Narragansett hosts Gazebo Summer Concerts (NarragansettRI.gov). Here’s your game plan: Call in sick to work on Friday, spend the day at Town Beach, and then move your chair over by the sea wall for the 6pm show.
DINING FRESH With its super fresh seafood and its views for days, Coast Guard House is a must-taste at least once. Away from the beach, there are tons of other delicious options, like the creative cocktails and fusion cuisine at Chair 5 (DineChair5.com), the paella and sangria at Spain of Narragansett (SpainRI.com) and the waterfront classics at 1230 Ocean Bistro (1230OceanBistro.com). HeyRhody.com
Photography by Blink of An Eye Photography
Just as we all have our staunch beliefs that our favorite clam shack is the very best clam shack, we’re creatures of habit when it comes to our go-to beaches. Narragansett is home to four drive-worthy ones: Narragansett Town Beach (NarragansettRI.gov), and Scarborough, Wheeler and Salty Brine state beaches (RIParks.com). Town Beach is more expensive – you have to pay to park and get on the beach – but it has the most going for it, from surfing lessons to proximity to shopping at Pier Marketplace (Facebook: Narragansett Pier Marketplace) and Coast Guard House (TheCoastGuardHouse.com), which is fine dining downstairs and bathing-suit-friendly on the roof deck. Scarborough tends to be the most crowded and draws heavily from Providence and North Providence. Wheeler is full of families. Salty Brine – and its parking lot – are tiny, but the beach has plenty of room to spread out once you find a parking space.

A Fun-Filled Day in Westerly Rhode Island’s southernmost town is a summer playground
If you haven’t been to Westerly because it’s too far to drive, well, you’re definitely a Rhode Islander. Just 45 minutes from Providence, Westerly has everything you want in a summer funday: sun, sand and great food.
Westerly is quickly becoming a foodie destination, with restaurants like Ella’s Fine Food and Drink (EllasFineFoodAndDrink.com) making headlines. Noodle Revolution (Facebook: Noodle Revolution) serves some of the best Asian street food around, and the gourmet burgers at B&B Dockside (BnBDockside. com) can’t be beat. The Malted Barley (TheMaltedBarleyRI.com), serves nearly 100 craft beers, along with gourmet pretzels, and Grey
Sail Brewing (GreySailBrewing.com) offers beers like their signature Flying Jenny extra pale ale, Captain’s Daughter imperial IPA and Flagship cream ale at their tasting room. Before and after your dinner, though – or between your first and second dinner – there’s a ton of fun to be had. Flipside Pinball Bar (FlipsidePinball.bar) is a new video game arcade bar serving fun cocktails and pinball action. The famed Knickerbocker Music Center (KnickMusic.com), home to the Grammy Award-winning Roomful
Pretzels and a pint at The Malted Barley
of Blues, is a great evening spot for live music and dancing. The Colonial Theatre (TheColonialTheatre. org) will be holding its 26th annual Shakespeare Festival this summer, staging The Tempest al fresco in Wilcox Park from July 26-August 13.
LOOK SHARP IN WATCH HILL
Cocktails on the beach at The Andrea
48
| Summer Guide 2017
Look, nobody’s going to judge you if you just so happen to show up in Watch Hill over July 4 weekend when Taylor Swift throws the most Instagrammable party of the year. However, if all you do is circle in front of her house, well, you’re missing out. Watch Hill has three pristine beaches – Napatree, Sandy Point and East Beach – but parking can be a challenge. If you can find a space in the public parking lot, make sure to explore the tiny strip of shops and restaurants. Shops along Bay Street and Fort Road offer beautifully curated summer shopping, from the sundresses at Christina’s LTD (ChristinasLTD.com), to nautical home decor at Highpoint Home (HighpointHomeDecor.com). Olympia Tea Room (OlympiaTeaRoom.com) has been a full-service restaurant for over 100 years and has covetable sidewalk tables overlooking the marina. For a real taste of luxury, stop by Ocean House
(OceanHouseRI.com). Dinner at Seasons can run you a pretty penny, but cocktails on The Verandah are slightly more attainable and have the same killer ocean views. This summer, they’re opening Secret Garden, serving champagne and small bites.
MAKE A SPLASH IN MISQUAMICUT If there’s a summer playground in Rhode Island, it’s the sandy strip of restaurants and attractions around Misquamicut State Beach (Misquamicut.org). There’s Water Wizz (WaterWizzRI.com), the state’s only water park, and Atlantic Beach Park (Facebook: Atlantic Beach Park), with games and rides including a carousel from 1915. On Monday and Wednesday nights in July and August, Misquamicut hosts concerts on the beach (TunesOnTheDunesRI. com). Fridays and Saturdays bring Drive-In Movies (Misquamicut.org), featuring classic films. While you’re there, make sure to stop at a beachfront restaurant like Paddy’s Beach Club (PaddysBeach.com), The Andrea (AndreaBeachBar.com) and The Windjammer Surf Bar (AtlanticBeachPark. com). They’re all family-friendly, all have beach access and will all serve you a cocktail while you have your toes in the sand.

Beach, Please Find the best sandy spot to match your personality By Julie Tremaine
Not all beaches are created equal, even in the Ocean State. Of our 400 miles of coastline, here are our favorites - well, some of our favorites. The rest we’re keeping just for ourselves.
Best beach for: Kids Roger Wheeler State Beach, Narragansett The waves are gentle, the parking is plentiful (and close by) and the snacks from the snack bar are never more than one looming meltdown away. Rhode Island’s only state beach with a playground on site, Wheeler (NarragansettRI.gov) is popular among families with younger kids. Once they’re old enough to hit the surf without help, it’s probably time to relocate to nearby Scarborough and leave the baby surf for the babies. Amenities: Pavilion, lifeguards, restrooms, snack bar
This tucked-away beach isn’t easy to find, but that makes it all the more enjoyable. Once you get there, you’re going to have plenty of space to stretch out. Goosewing (VisitRhodeIsland.com) is technically an extension of South Shore Beach, which is where you’ll park - and where your GPS will be able to navigate to. The serene stretch of shoreline is a nature preserve for nesting birds, and has gorgeous views for days, all the way to Martha’s Vineyard and beyond. Amenities: Portable restrooms at South Shore Beach
Best beach for: Surfing Narragansett Town Beach, Narragansett If you don’t associate Rhode Island with surfing, that’s because you haven’t spent much time on Narragansett Town Beach (NarragansettRI.gov). Three places in Narragansett offer lessons on Town Beach, which has the state’s best waves and surf conditions: Narragansett Surf and Skate (NarragansettSurfAndSkate.com), Warm Winds (WarmWinds.com) and Peter Pan Surf Academy (PeterPanSurfAcademy.com). You can book in advance, or walk up to the groups of tanned beach bums convening around surfboard-filled vans from the stores and get a lesson on the spot. Amenities: Pavilion, cabana rentals, lifeguards, restrooms, snack bar, water sports, morning and evening activities

The expansive beach has several restaurants – like The Andrea (AndreaSeaside.com), Paddy’s (PaddysBeach.com) and The Windjammer (WindjammerSurfBarRI.com) – with service in the sand, meaning the waitstaff will bring you some clam cakes and a tropical cocktail while you lounge on a beach chair and soak up the sun.

The best part for animal lovers, though, is that Fred Benson Pavilion (BlockIslandInfo.com) in the heart of Crescent Beach is pet-friendly at any time of day, not just super early in the morning before the lifeguards chase you away. Just make sure Fido stays on a leash and you clean up after him. You can also rent chairs, cabanas, umbrellas and boogie boards, rather than carrying them over from the mainland. Amenities: Pavilion, lifeguards, restrooms, snack bar, rentals, pet-friendly
Best beach for: Foodies East Matunuck State Beach, South Kingstown With three line-out-the-door restaurants nearby, East Matunuck State Beach is a must-visit if you like your beach day to include a delicious waterfront meal. Fine dining Matunuck Oyster Bar (RhodyOysters.com), casual Cap’n Jack’s (Facebook: Cap’n Jack’s Restaurant) and BYO - in a bathing suit - Jim’s Dock (Facebook: Jim’s Dock) are all within walking distance, meaning you can leave your car at the beach, have lunch, and head back for relaxation round two. Fill your beach bag and add some anchors to your wardrobe - it’s summer
YACHT COUTURE Less than a decade ago, Kiel James Patrick (KielJamesPatrick.com) was two people - Kiel and his then girlfriend, now wife Sarah Vickers - dyeing rope by hand in their kitchen. Now, KJP’s signature anchor bracelet is a symbol of classic New England style that’s available all over the country. The company has branched
out into clothing and pet accessories and is opening their flagship store on Bowen’s Wharf in Newport this June. If you follow the “life is shore-ly perfect” vibe on their Instagram feed, you already know what to expect: nautical prep, with pastels, anchors and summer chic in any season.

Fitness by the Shore Trade the gym for the beach with these waterfront workouts By Jen Senecal
in the Ocean State wants to be is, well, near the ocean. Skip the gym and get your body going with these waterfront classes. DOWNWARD DOG AT DUSK While it’s no secret that a good glass (or six) of Pinot will peel away stress, there is a natural alternative that omits the hangover and still leaves you feeling elated. Natural Fitness’s (NaturalFitnessYoga.com) Full Moon Yoga on Narragansett Beach gives you the opportunity to receive lunar energy and its powers of fulfillment, wholeness and renewal while practicing directly under it.
SALUTE THE SUN It’s true that most of us need coffee, an extended vacation or three million dollars to get us jumping out of our beds at dawn, but morning yoga with All That Matters (AllThatMatters.com) on South Kingstown Beach is the next best way to get your day started. Salute the sun and its beautiful beach-y surroundings with set intentions and a vinyasa flow that will
leave you clear-minded, energized and mentally prepared to tackle your to-do list.
BATTLE ON THE BEACH The Navy SEALs say, “The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in combat.” The no-nonsense sentiment is the same with Pulse Newport’s (PulseNewport.com) Beach Bootcamp. Sprint into summer with your strongest self with a mix of bodyweight and equipment based drills on picturesque Second Beach of Middletown and enjoy the camp extras like body composition analysis, workout plans and nutrition planning.
ON BOARD Let’s be real: Whenever you can get a good workout in while also scoring a killer photo for Instagram, everyone wins. That’s what’s sure to happen at
Paddleboard Rhode Island’s (PaddleBoardRI.com) SUP Yoga. Venture out to a new aquatic location each class and hone your mental, physical and spiritual balance while balancing on a paddleboard over water. With serene scenery and focused coordination, your downward dog will clear your mind and crowd your friends’ feeds.
DANCE LIKE NOBODY’S WATCHING If dance is the hidden language of the soul, then Zumba is a conversation your body will want to have. Join Bristol Parks & Recreation (BristolRI. us) for a calorie-burning dance fitness party alongside scenic Narragansett Bay in Colt State Park, where mixed beats and rhythms guide your feet for an all-over workout.
GARDEN OM You don’t need a green thumb to hang out in this garden. Instead, grab a towel, water and mat and head over to Blithewold’s (Blithewold.org) Yoga in the Garden in Bristol. Your spirit, energy and awareness will be awakened as you spend your morning flowing under the canopies of greens in the soothing setting of the waterfront foliage.

staple in Narragansett for 23 years, Crosswynds Traders (CrosswyndsTraders.com) has expanded, crossing the bridge (two, actually) into Newport. Now successfully nestled in two coastal communities, the team here has their finger on all your nautical needs, including awesome, compact waterproof bags by Macbeth Collection. “Keeping the cell phone in a case in your beach bag is just a quicker and easier way to locate it instead of at the bottom of a big tote!” says owner Chris Woodbine. Salt (Facebook: Salt Tiverton), in Tiverton Four Corners, exemplifies a curated collection of must-haves, but when you’re headed to the shore, where you definitely need good tunes, you must have Salt’s SunnyLife Beach Sounds Speaker Case. Not only does it have a radio tuner, volume dial and bass control, but flip it open and it has a 3.5mm jack to hook up your phone. It’s sand-resistant and water-resistant and comes in an array of fun and funky patterns. Among the Lilly Pulitzer frocks and whimsical Free People finds at Christina LTD (ChristinaLTD.com) in Watch Hill, you’d hardly expect to find the (gasp!) positively irreverent collection of Bitchstix, but they’re here, and they are awesome. Bitchstix lip balms are SPF 30 and are made with certified organic ingredients in addition to being GMO-, palm oil- and petroleum-free. Best of all, 100 percent of net proceeds are given to domestic violence and sexual assault prevention programs. So basically, it’s the balm! Robin B. Clothier (RobinBClothier.com) in East Greenwich wants to
make sure your beach look is equal parts sensational and sophisticated with silk and cashmere scarves by Blue Pacific that do double duty as sarongs. Yes, they make an elegant evening wrap, but on the beach, the luxuriously soft, tissue-weight large scarf is the perfect multifunctional must-have. Head wrap, body wrap, beach tote accessory — however you want to “tie one on,” it’s your call. With its straight fit and shirttail hem, Zuzu’s Petals’ (Facebook: Zuzu’s Petals) owner Lois Hollingsworth says the Alison shift dress by Jude Connally is the perfect beach ensemble, versatile enough to be a simple bathing suit coverup or to pair with sandals for popping in the beach club for a spritzer — provided you’ve dusted the sand off your toes. Flip-flops are a beach bag staple — but SwitchFlops by Lindsay Phillips are a game changer. “They are a super comfy, wedge flip-flop with interchangeable Velcro straps available that can change the total appearance of the sandal!” says Wakefield’s Seaside Style (ShopSeasideStyle.com) owner Cathy Gorham. From Greek key or polka dot patterns to animal prints, the stylish straps take you from shoreline to champagne sipping in a snap. There’s nothing quite like a cool refreshment after a body surfing sesh. The Stay Salty travel cups from Newport’s Pink Pineapple (PinkPineappleShop.com), with a frosted look and gold script, come in a set of eight so everyone can be the cool kid by the sea. HeyRhody.com

RHODE RULES FOR SUMMER EATING First: stop at the sign of the lemon on the first sunny summer day. Next – break out the clam rake. Run on dunkin’... clam cakes into chowder. Cool down with a cabinet, or a cold pizza strip. Order a dozen oysters from your favorite grower. Pair with bubbly and a view of Narragansett Bay. Repeat. Crack a lobster in record time. Ask for extra drawn butter and lemon (with everything). Start every meal with
calamari, the official state appetizer. Don’t forget an order of stuffies - the unofficial state side dish. Watch the line for doughboys curl around the block. Mark every clambake on your calendar. Show a newbie how to eat steamers. Drink your iced coffee before the ice melts. Get the Saugys grillin.’ Get the ‘Gansetts chillin’. It’s summah. Don’t waste a single bite of Rhode Island’s most delicious season.

1 DELICIOUSLY CLEAR The doughy clam cakes from Warren’s Blount Clam Shack (BlountRetail.com) are chock-full of flavor and perfectly crispy on the outside. The clear broth of the chowder is rich and every clam- and potato-packed spoonful was bursting with New England flavor.
2 OCEAN FRESH The clam cakes and chowder from Champlin’s Seafood (Champlins.com) in Galilee are an absolute delight. The clam cakes, fresh from the fryer, and the wicked awesome chowder will be everything your summer-starved appetite could hope for.
3 CLEARLY PERFECT George’s of Galilee’s (GeorgesOfGalilee.com) perfectly crispy-onthe-outside, fluffy-on-the-inside clam cakes are a true taste of summer. The clear Rhode Island-style chowder will wow you with every delicious spoonful.

4 DYNAMIC DUO With locations in Warwick and Narragansett, Iggy’s (IggysDoughBoys.com) chowder and clam cakes are a combo that will have you clam-oring for more. The chowder is so good you won’t be able to have just one cup.
5 DELECTABLE RED The red chowder from Anthony’s Seafood (AnthonysSeafood. net) in Middletown has the tiniest bit of kick to it. The spices in the broth are heavenly and the potatoes and clams melted in our mouths. The crispy clam cakes are the perfect companions to this savory broth.
6 PERFECTLY CREAMY The chowder from Quito’s (QuitosRestaurant.com) in Bristol is a perfect example of a true New England classic. Each bite is loaded with fresh clams, and the clam cakes – whether eaten alone or dunked into the delicious broth – are fantastic.

Dinner With a View 10 waterfront restaurants for your must-try list By Andrea E. McHugh
Coastal Cruisers
Every mile of gorgeous coastline is a reason to keep the water within eyeshot. Of course you’ve got to eat sometime, which is where these restaurants with stunning ocean views come in.
1 BABSetc.com
Gulfstream Bar & Grille (GulfStreamBar.com) in Portsmouth is housed in an original 1942 Quonset Hut that was built as part of the US Navy’s PT boat training center. Here you’ll find coastal recipes from regions along the Gulf Stream with a New England twist. Dine with your four-legged friend on the patio.
2
Though The Chanler (TheChanler.com/Dining) is undeniably elegant, you don’t have to roll up in a Bentley to dine at the Newport hotel’s Cliff Walk Terrace. Overlooking the ocean, the terrace is one of summer’s best kept secrets in the City by the Sea where you can savor lunch, dinner and lovely light bites.

As the name implies, Jim’s Dock (Facebook: Jim’s Dock) is, in fact, at the docks, and this decidedly casual, BYOB morning-to-night spot is a local’s favorite. Though the address is technically Wakefield, anyone will tell you that the restaurant is in Jerusalem in Narragansett. Tip: Seek out the day’s specials as you’ll likely enjoy something from the local fishing boats.
only thing fresher than the seafood on your plate is what you’ll see the local fisherman hauling in.
6
For almost six decades, George’s of Galilee (GeorgesOfGalilee.com) has served boat-to-plate seafood to generations of Rhode Islanders. With its enviable location overlooking the Block Island Sound, diners have six different dining rooms to choose from, the restaurant’s private beach, live entertainment, competitive volleyball and buck-a-shuck every weekday afternoon.
7
The Oar (BlockIslandResorts. com/Dining-2/The-Oar) on Block Island’s Great Salt Pond is known for its countless personalized oars, killer lobster rolls and legendary mudslides. And sushi. And maybe Christopher Walken sightings. They don’t take reservations but if you do have to wait,
you can play a round or two of corn hole.
8
Family-owned and -operated, Quito’s (QuitosRestaurant.com) in Bristol started as a fish market. A brand new outdoor bar and patio have just been unveiled featuring a savory raw bar menu and we predict that the views of Bristol’s quaint harbor will make it trés popular this summer.
9
Evelyn’s Drive-In (EvelynsDriveIn. com) is a Rhode Island institution and has been the beloved place for fresh (and freshly fried) local favorites since 1969. This humble hotspot on Tiverton’s Nanaquaket Pond celebrates classics (fried clams and fish & chips) and fusion (lobster chow mein) fare.
10
Sometimes overshadowed by its high profile waterfront neighbor, The Safari Room at OceanCliff (NewportExperience.com/Dine) in Newport merges sophisticated surroundings with a relaxed vibe. Tropical plants and swaths of fabric flowing in the bay breeze overhead – all illuminated by glowing lanterns – set the mood within the open-air restaurant while the patio and Adirondack chairs peppering the lawn are completely laid-back.
4
With its modern-meets-nautical motif, Trafford (TraffordRestaurant.com) in Warren’s waterfront historic district is a relaxing respite loved by seafood aficionados and landlubbers alike. Killer sunsets over the Warren River and Sunday brunch make drinking and dining here memorable.
5
A sometimes-overlooked hidden gem, 15 Point Road (15PointRoad. com) in Portsmouth is set along the Sakonnet River. Dine on the main floor, upstairs, at the bar or on the patio. The

Where There’s Smoke… A slew of new restaurants get Rhode Island fired up for barbecue By John Taraborelli
Here in Rhode Island, we’re justifiably proud of our outsized reputation for great food. But barbecue has traditionally been a notable gap on our culinary resume. Sure, there have always been a handful of places that know their way around a plate of ribs – we’re thinking Wes’ Rib House and Rick’s Roadhouse in Providence, Oak Hill Tavern in South County, Becky’s and the Smoke House on Aquidneck Island – but Rhode Island has never been a detour on anybody’s barbecue road trip. That might finally be changing. Over the past few years more local chefs are lighting up smokers and going slow-and-low on ribs, pulled pork, brisket and all the fixins. There might even be – dare we say it – an emerging barbecue scene here in Rhode Island.
GOTTA Q As a food truck, Gotta Q (GottaQ.com) was voted the #3 barbecue truck in the country by Mobile-Cuisine.com. Capitalizing on that success, they’ve opened not one but two brick-and-mortar locations in Cumberland, serving slow-smoked meats with either Kansas City or Eastern Carolina style sauces. Try it: Tri Tip Sirloin with a dollop of cole slaw.
PORK & STARBOARD
BINGE BBQ Binge (BingeBBQRI.com) is Newport’s newest late-night craving, cooking slow-and-low over an all-wood fire every Friday and Saturday until 2am. (They’re open until 9:30pm the rest of the week.) Try it: Thick-cut Smoked Pork Belly.
SAVE THE DATE (AND SOME ROOM) As if you needed another reason to become a believer in Rhode Island barbecue, last year we got our very own festival dedicated to slowsmoked meats (and fish – this is the Ocean State, after all). The Ocean State BBQ Festival (Facebook: OSBBQ Fest) returns to the Steel Yard in Providence for its sophomore outing on June 9-10. Check the Facebook page for news and updates.

PINK PIG BBQ Priding themselves on 10- to 14-hour cook times, the folks at Pink Pig (PinkPigBBQ.com) know that nothing creates demand quite like limited supply: Once they run out of juicy, smoky goodness, they’re out. Hurry to their Warren or Jamestown location early to get your fix. Try it: They’re called the Pink Pig, but if you must try something other than pork, we recommend the Jamaican Jerk Wings.
DURK’S BAR•B•Q The fine folks who brought The Eddy – and its decadent chicharrones nachos – to the downtown Providence bar scene are now pairing Texas-style barbecue with craft cocktails at Durk’s (DurksBBQ.com) on the East Side. Try it: The Ridurkulous Sandwich, with chopped beef and smoked sausage.
GREAT NORTHERN BBQ CO. Who says the South has an exclusive claim on good barbecue? The guys at Great Northern (Facebook: Great Northern BBQ Co.) beg to differ, with slowsmoked meats served out of The Point Tavern, a great neighborhood bar on Providence’s East Side. Try it: The brisket, which won best in its category at the inaugural Ocean State BBQ Festival last summer.

What goes better with barbecue than a nice, cold beer? Pork & Starboard (PorkAndStarboard.com) serves “pitto-plate” cuisine combining classic barbecue techniques with local ingredients on Saturdays at Pawtucket’s Bucket Brewery. Try it: The menu changes weekly, so trust your chef.
