STAYING WARM
Little Compton’s Antique Stove Hospital keeps vintage appliances running hot By Megan Schmit
Imagine this: Snow falling to pad the ground in white while you are nested in blankets taking refuge from the cold, basking in manufactured warmth. For ages, the ideal winter’s day has been spent gathered inside, either in front of a crackling hearth or cast iron heater, while the snow outside adds a tranquil, dreamy backdrop beyond the window. Today, in the era of faux fireplaces and central heat, we don’t think too much about where that cozy warmth is coming from. For two Little Compton proprietors, it’s their business. Emery and Brandon Pineo

The Antique Stove Hospital is a refuge for old-fashioned coal, wood, and gas stoves, ranges, broilers, heaters, and ovens. Father-son duo Emery and Brandon Pineo, self-proclaimed “Paleostoveologist” and “Stove Whisperer” respectively, have been restoring antique stoves since the ‘90s, after Emery tinkered and refurbished his own 20 years prior. The Pineos don’t just clean them up to sell as vintage home decor; they repair each one to working condition to be used for its original purpose. “They just don’t make stoves like they used to,” says Brandon, pointing out the durability of iron stoves compared to today’s limited warranty, mass-assembled appliances. “They were made to last for generations.” He and his father spend hours upon hours, often months, fixing up the stoves brought to them by clients from as far as Alaska and the United Arab Emirates: disassembling, cleaning, welding, caulking, reassembling, painting, installing, and polishing. The finished product is as shiny as day-one, which could have been as long ago as the eighteenth century or as “recent” as the 1930s. The shop itself is a rotating treasure trove: There are between 300 and 400 stoves kept in stock, most filling the barn out back and others spilling into the yard. Tools and spare parts dominate entire rows of shelves inside, and a blanket of black sand marks a workspace dedicated to sanding metal. In the Hospital’s lifetime, the Pineos have doctored around 5,000 stoves, rebuilding between 100 and 150 per year. Most are from clients looking for a practical way to heat their house without electricity, or for a period-appropriate appliance to match their historic home. Some are abandoned at their shop, or salvaged. While the Pineos acknowledge the nostalgia and aesthetic of antique stoves, they are insistent on putting practicality first. Yes, there may be something alluring about the gleam of a freshly polished Glenwood Wood Parlor, but people should also appreciate how it heats a home like it did so many generations ago – and will continue to do. After all, in the middle of winter, there’s nothing quite like curling up with a blanket, cozy and warm. Little Compton, StoveHospital.com

BAH HUMBUG!
Actor Stephen Thorne opens up about playing the holidays’ most iconic grouch at Trinity Rep By Alyssa Anderson
Stephen Thorne has been a member of the Trinity Repertory Company for nearly 20 years, but this may be his most important role yet: He has been cast as Scrooge in this year’s production of A Christmas Carol, which comes with an enormous weight. For 41 years, audiences have gathered at Trinity Rep to witness Charles Dickens’ classic ghost story come to life. Having co-directed the production last year with his wife, Angela Brazil, and appearing in the show numerous times as a cast member, Thorne is more than ready to take on the beloved role.
How do you think this year’s production is different or stands apart from other seasons? I think the truly amazing thing about our Christmas Carol is that it does change from year to year. [We’re] telling a story that everyone is familiar with, and saying, “Okay, let’s start at the beginning, and treat this as if we’re doing it for the first time.” With all of the institutional knowledge and experience that we have with it, let’s put all of that in a room and make something brand new. There are a lot of people in the audience who come year after year, and there are some who are coming for the very first time, so either way, we’re trying to create that experience anew for them. We’re asking ourselves that question every day: “How do we make this fresh?”
version of the character. It’s like Hamlet or any other big role like that; the actor is allowed to put their own stamp on it. It’s not just personality, it’s everything: how I move, how I look, how I sound. He’s a man who’s shut himself off from pretty much most of the world, and, in my mind, perhaps because I’m the one playing him this year, he’s firmly in middle age. In Dickens’ time, that would’ve been pretty far along. But I relate to that very strongly, your youth is not only gone, but long gone, and I think he can look down the road and say to himself, “This is probably what I’m going to do for the rest of my life. Work, eat, sleep. Work, eat, sleep. Don’t make contact, don’t open up, ignore the outside world,” but the beautiful thing about this story is that he realizes that it’s not too late.
Dickens’ story to bring out is that Scrooge doesn’t see anyone. It’s like he’s walking around with blinders on. A big part of what he has to go through is that he has to open his eyes. He has to see what’s around him. That resonates with me at this particular moment, not just this year, but in this current political climate where people are fighting to be seen and acknowledged, and to me, Scrooge represents that part of us that says, “Well, I’m just taking care of my own stuff and I’m not responsible for anybody else.” We are responsible for each other. It takes effort and it takes a choice to realize that we’re all responsible for one another, and that message to me, is especially vibrant and important now with this show.
How is your version of Scrooge going to be different? A different actor is going to bring their own
What is the modern relevance of A Christmas Carol? I think something important and central to

BROWSING • BEHIND THE BEARD
SANTA CLAUS FOR A CAUSE Bristolian Michael Rielly is a third generation Santa, for all the right reasons By Alyssa Anderson
Have you ever seen one of those Mall Santas that just didn’t cut it? His beard was falling off or his pillow was poking out of his coat? He tried, but you just didn’t believe him? Michael Rielly is not that kind of Santa.
When you see him, costume and beard expertly applied, and just watch the way he enters a room, you truly believe that he is Santa Claus. Rielly’s grandfather, Jim, began the family Santa Claus tradition in 1927 at the age of nineteen, when he heard that a local family had made their home in an abandoned chicken coup. He was determined to bring a little Christmas joy to them and sought the help of the community. He cobbled together a Santa suit, threw some oranges and toys in a pillowcase, and delivered the small but thoughtful gifts to the family. 24
HEY RHODY HOLIDAY 2018
HeyRhody.com
From that moment forward, Jim Rielly did whatever he could to spread the joy of Christmas year-round. He spent time in churches, hospitals, schools, nursing homes, military bases, and more. Over the course of his life, Jim received several distinctions and letters from dozens of famous people, including First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and even Pope John Paul II, commending him on his charitable work. He spent 62 years bringing smiles and laughter to those who needed it most, and now his grandson carries on the tradition. In 1971, at the age of eight, Michael was asked to portray Santa in a school play. So, armed with his grandfather’s advice, a red snow suit, his mother’s belt, and some cowboy boots, a new apprentice was born. As Michael grew up, he would visit the Veteran’s Hospital in Bristol as Santa to bring some cheer to those who desperately needed it. When Jim passed away in 1991, Michael filled his boots, so to speak, and took on many of the gigs his grandfather used to do. He appears every year at the Bristol Holiday Illumination, as well as the Pancake Breakfast the next morning. He also appears as Santa at private parties and functions, but he doesn’t accept money. He requests that a donation be made instead, to charities that help families and children. He lives by his grandfather’s words: “I wouldn’t feel comfortable accepting money while portraying a saint.” In 2016, Michael started the James D. Rielly Foundation, a non-profit organization that continues his grandfather’s mission to help improve the lives of those who need a little extra cheer. They provide emotional and charitable support to families and children of military personnel, first responders, and veterans in need, living true to their motto: “Spreading Cheer Throughout the Year.” Michael’s son, now 25, has begun to embrace the family tradition as well. Michael and his family have done everything they can for nearly a century to share the joy and love of Christmas with people around the state of Rhode Island and around the country, and it seems that they’ll carry on the tradition for another century to come. SMALL HILL, BIG SHREDDING South County snowboard stars, the Yawgoons, make the most out of RI’s modest slopes By Bob Curley Photos by Andrew Fisher
28
HEY RHODY HOLIDAY 2018
HeyRhody.com
In the annals of winter sports lore there have been some decidedly odd ducks scattered among the Nordic gods of the slopes: the nervous catapultings of British ski jumper/ human cannonball Eddie the Eagle, the iceless Jamaican bobsled team, and even the slow-motion halfpipe meanderings of putative Hungarian freestyle skier Elizabeth Swaney at the 2018 winter Olympics in Pyong-Chang come to mind. And then there’s Rhode Island’s own Yawgoons, the unlikely group of Rhode Island snowboarding superstars who honed their skills at Exeter’s Yawgoo Valley ski area — all 310 vertical feet of it. What sets the Yawgoons apart from some of these other powder hounds is ability. Despite the funny name, the Yawgoons are no joke. In fact, they’ve won international acclaim for their innovative tricks and techniques – captured and shared on video, of course – that incorporate every possible feature on Yawgoo’s modest set of ski runs. Big mountain shredders, you can keep your halfpipes and funboxes: for the Yawgoons, the excitement comes from playing on the ski area’s buildings, idle snowcats, ice blocks, rocks, and even grass (there’s usually plenty of that at a resort that gets an average of less than three feet of natural snow each winter). Rather than focusing on tricks or big air, the troupe is known for their slope-carving skills and quirky approach to constructing terrain park features, like a rail made from a boat anchor chain. “It’s a different aspect of snowboarding entirely,” says Brendan Gouin, who serves as the Yawgoons’ videographer when he’s not peering into mouths at work as a dentist in Charlestown. “We’re not jumping out of helicopters into the backcountry. We represent a style of snowboarding that’s more attainable for people: we’re riding at this dinky hill but look at what you can do with this.” The “Goons” – Gouin, Dylan Gamache, Marcus Rand, Mary Rand, and Brian Skorupski – all learned to snowboard at Yawgoo. The core members mostly remain after nearly a decade of Yawgooning: Mary has moved on to a successful career as a professional snowboarder, but the others continue to carve the slopes at Yawgoo and share their exploits on video and on sponsored trips as far away as Austria and Switzerland. The Yawgoons plan to release their 20th video around the new year, when Gouin and company will celebrate 10 years of redefining what constitutes “fun” in the world of snowboarding. Rhode Island and Yawgoo Valley may be a strange place to find snowboarding pioneers, but the Yawgoons say there’s nowhere else they’d rather be on a winter night than riding the Yawgoo tow rope and coming up with new ways to cut, carve, hit, and grind at Yawgoo. “You make the most of what you’ve got,” says Gouin. PINING FOR
CHRISTMAS From tagging to recycling, your guide to bringing home a live tree
By Elyse Major
W
e go to Nagetuck Tree Farm in Tiverton. Always the day after Thanksgiving. The usual adventure starts, for us, with a walk to the fields. There is a hay wagon ride, but save that for later. We walk up and down the rows looking for our "perfect tree. It has to be around seven feet tall and just as round, very full. We bring bows with us to mark potential trees. After we find the tree, the tree is tagged with our information and we head back to the office to pay and set our pickup date. The trip back is usually the hayride. By the time we get back to the office we have rosy cheeks and a bit of a chill. We get either warm cider or hot chocolate. There is a wood stove and popcorn. They also have a gift shop with handmade ornaments and they also sell wreaths. The part I like best is the petting zoo! For us it's the Christmas season. -Lorraine Miranda
Like the Miranda family, many families visit a farm once or twice each holiday season to secure a live tree for Christmas. According to the Rhode Island Christmas Tree Growers Association, Christmas trees are an important part of the state’s agricultural industry. Whether you decide to tag, cut, or visit a pop-up lot, here is your guide to picking the perfect tree.

ANYBODY THERE? Before visiting a farm, it is best to call ahead for details such as hours, are credit cards accepted, and are there public restrooms. Many farms are also on social media, so check for recent updates and special activities, like hayrides or baked goods.
SHAKEN NOT STIRRED You may want to ask for your fresh cut tree to be shaken to make sure you’re not bringing home a surprise pet, and request netting or baling, which is wrapping the tree for easier transport.
TAG, YOU’RE IT! Offered by some Christmas tree farms, tagging or pre-tagging is when you visit during fall and are led to the lot of living trees and can designate the one you wish to have cut down for you at a later time. Tagging season varies from farm to farm and can begin in October or November. The return visit happens after Thanksgiving. As excited as you are to bring your tree home, you don’t want to risk it drying out before Christmas Day.
THE BIG COVER UP Consider bringing a blanket or plastic tarp along to protect the surface of your car’s roof. Also pack bungee cords, straps, and/or rope to secure the tree to your car’s rooftop.
OFF THE RACK Remember, you won’t have farmhands helping you take the tree off your car back at home – or lugging it up three flights of steps to your apartment – so be sure to enlist assistance from friends and neighbors ahead of time as needed.

TIMBER! Some farms provide a bow saw for customers to cut trees themselves. If you’re up to the challenge, bring a pair of heavy-duty work gloves and goggles.
CHOP CHOP Chances are the farm will do this for you without asking, but be sure an inch is cut off of the bottom of any pre-cut tree or that a hole is drilled at the base, as this will allow the tree to take up water again and prolong freshness. Just like fresh flowers, you want the tree to be placed in water as soon as possible, even a bucket while you prep the stand.

KEEP YOUR COOL While the vision of a Christmas tree beside a fireplace might make for a nice greeting card image, you’ll want to keep your tree clear of any heat source to prevent premature drying.
Scratch and sniff
In Rhode Island, different growers specialize in different varieties. This breakdown can help you find what you’re looking for in a tree: If you like: That Christmas tree smell A picture-perfect shape Sweet scent, soft needles Bright green, long-lasting Blue-green, low fragrance Strong needles, low fragrance
Look for: Balsam Fir Blue Spruce Douglas Fir Scotch Pine White Pine White Spruce
CURB YOUR ENTHUSIASM When you are ready to clean-up from the holidays, your tree can be recycled into mulch. Check your town website or the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation’s website to get the pickup date. Before leaving your tree on the curb, remove any ornaments, hooks, and tinsel.

A TOUR OF
TOURO SYNAGOGUE The oldest synagogue on the continent tells a story of America By Andrea E. McHugh Photos courtesy of Touro Synagogue
N
estled into the heart of Newport’s Old Quarter, Touro Synagogue is, like many of its neighbors, a centuries-old architectural gem, but its distinctive role in both Jewish and American history is one to be celebrated. “We share it with the whole world,” says Rabbi Marc Mandel of the synagogue, best known for being the oldest in North America and the only synagogue from the Colonial period still standing. But Touro Synagogue is as much an American story as it is an international one. As docent Lew Keen explains, the congregation’s origins date back to the 1490s, when during the Spanish Inquisition, practicing Jews throughout Spain and Portugal were forced to convert to Catholicism or be expelled. Leaving their lives and worldly possessions behind, many fled to Amsterdam, which was aggressively exploring or conquering new lands. Among them was Brazil, where many Jewish merchants set up new businesses that flourished until the Portuguese recaptured the colony from the Dutch. Soon after, 23 Jewish families fled to New Amsterdam (today’s New York City) where Dutch director-general Peter Stuyvesant, who rejected religious freedom and banned the building of a synagogue, made Jewish life difficult. So the second wave of refugees from Brazil, 15 families in total, made their way to Newport. In 1677, they bought land to serve as a burial ground where it remains today at the corner of Touro Street and Bellevue Avenue. Around 100 years later, a synagogue was built, dedicated on the first night of Hanukkah in 1763, and the very same menorah where the first candle was lit can be seen by visitors on a tour of this historic and sacred property. The synagogue’s unique place in history is “something I think about every day of my life,” says Rabbi Mandel, who came to Touro Synagogue from Beverly Hills in 2012. “There’s a special feeling when you walk in.” Designed by prominent British-American architect Peter Harrison (who also designed Redwood Library & Athenaeum and the Brick Market nearby), Touro Synagogue reflects traditional Georgian style with an ornate interior including twelve Corinthian columns symbolizing the twelve tribes of Israel made from individual solid tree trunks. Keen explains on the tour that the columns are capped by elaborate ionic capitals on the first floor, while the columns on the second floor, home to the traditional women’s gallery, are capped with Corinthian ones. There’s also a regal balustrade lining the women's gallery and another surrounding the bima – the raised focal point of the synagogue sanctuary. Nearby is the ark, built on the eastern wall facing Jerusalem, site of the first temple. Inside are five Torah scrolls; the books of Moses. A sixth scroll is on display for visitors to see. It was gifted to the congregation for the dedication by the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in Amsterdam and is more than 500 years old. Arguably the most legendary architectural element, however, is the trap door located in the floor of the bima. “That always comes up,” Rabbi Mandel says with a laugh, noting that Harrison did not leave any notes about the trap door behind. “We don’t know much about the reasons and that makes it so fascinating. I think a lot of Touro docents feel it’s symbolic.” Keen says you can look at it two ways: first, the door leads to a practical space for storage; and second, that it serves as a reminder of the congregation’s roots and history, to remind people where they came from. Another out-of-the-ordinary design element is the seat of honor, which notably breaks up the symmetry of the room. Built for the president of the congregation to worship, three American

presidents have sat in the seat of honor: Kennedy (who married Jacqueline Bouvier just down the street at St. Mary’s Catholic Church); Eisenhower (whose “summer White House” can be seen at Fort Adams State Park); and Washington, whose name has become synonymous with Touro Synagogue itself. In 1790, President Washington visited Newport and among his many letters of welcome was one from Moses Seixas, an official at Touro Synagogue. Days after his departure, Washington penned what is forevermore known as the “Letter to the Hebrew Congregations of Newport, Rhode Island.” In it, Washington reaffirms two fundamental tenets of American democracy: the separation of church and state, and freedom of religion. Every August, the George Washington Letter Celebration unfolds at the synagogue. Distinguished guests have included Supreme Court Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Elena Kagan. be found at the Loeb Visitors Center on the Touro Synagogue campus. “In the last couple of years we’ve had people join the synagogue mostly because of the meaning and significance of the George Washington letter,” says Rabbi Mandel. “There are a lot of people who feel the letter speaks to them and they feel they want to contribute; to be a part of George Washington’s themes and declarations – his vision for what America was.” Today, there are more than 100 families within the congregation. “We are an active, vibrant community with a Hebrew school,” explains Rabbi Mandel. “We’re continuing in the steps of our founders.” Winter tours of Touro Synagogue (November 4 through December 31) are given on Sundays only from 11am to 1:30pm starting every half hour. Join the many Rhode Islanders knitting and purling their way through winter

ew Englanders are about as fickle over the weather as the weather itself. We’re hot and cold over hot and cold. Many people adore the idea of winter until about New Year’s Day, and then they’re ready for the whole thing to be over. In reality, we know from experience that frigid temps and precipitation don’t really kick into gear until about late January. Instead of getting your thermals into a twist over the wind chill factor, channel your inner bear and prepare to do some hibernating. Many Northern cultures refer to basking in coziness with various terms, like the Danish “hygge” (pronounced “hoogah”) – it’s all about the art of being content and snug. Consider adding hot cocoa mix and yarn to your shopping list this season and learn a new skill to while away the dark hours. You may even have something handmade to show for it. “Winter helps create that space to enjoy the little things in life,” says Jessica D’Avanza, who runs Stitch & Listen: A Knit & Crochet Meetup at Barrington Public Library. “I often feel like I have too much going on. Winter helps

create that space to enjoy the little things in life.” RISD faculty member and fiber artist Polly Spenner concurs, “Winter lends itself to fiber arts through the pure coziness of wanting to be wrapped in fabric that I have sewn, stitched, and hand painted.” Carol McElory, a spinner, weaver, and knitter agrees: “Winter is my absolute favorite time of year! I love snow and cold weather, starry nights and all that!” And the best part: “Being able to wear all my warm wool creations!” Like many, McElory has been knitting most of her life. “My nana taught me when I was a teenager. When my kids were young, we raised sheep and I learned how to take the raw wool and clean, dye, and spin it. I did a lot of spinning before I discovered weaving. I now have a large floor loom and enjoy creating woven goods like house decor, scarves, and baby blankets.” In addition to knitting for herself, McElory sells her handcrafted wares online at Etsy (Red Oak Fiber Arts) and at A Bee’s Buzz, a marketplace of antiques and crafts in Foster. From the comfort of one’s couch, seat on
the train, or soccer bench, there can also be activism. Recently via Instagram, Chitnis of Providence ran a series of auctions of hand knit goods to raise money for families separated at the border. “Knitters from all over the world participated, and we raised over $8,000 for RAICES, which provides free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees in Texas,” she explains. According to the Craft Yarn Council (CYC), more than 50 million people know how to knit, crochet, or craft with yarn. Throughout the years, the CYC has performed countless surveys with hundreds of thousands of participants asking folks why they choose to spend their time knitting and crocheting. Time and time again the results point to relaxation coupled with satisfaction and purpose. A study from Mayo Clinic for the American Academy of Neurology showed that knitters have a reduced risk of memory loss, and another at Harvard Medical School revealed that needlework can elicit a calm, almost meditative state linked to lowered heart rate and blood pressure.

“Very wise friends suggested I learn to knit as a way to cope with my enormous, oppressive grief,” says Ann Hood, acclaimed author of The Knitting Circle, a novel based in personal tragic loss, camaraderie, and knitting. “As a Home Ec failure back in ninth grade, it would never have occurred to me to turn to something like knitting for comfort, but it was exactly what I needed. I’ve been knitting nonstop ever since.” Hood has since authored other books on the craft including Kitchen Yarns: Notes on Life, Love, and Food, and adds that as soon as summer wanes, she begins knitting like mad. “I do like getting snowed in and having hours and hours to knit.” There’s also a social aspect, for those who want to take part in classes or enjoy others’ company while creating. “There are not many places you can go where you can be surrounded by every age and demographic and still have a common bond and language. Knitting and making gives us that ability,” says Erica Smith, an instructor at Barrington’s Knit One Quilt Too shop. “On a Saturday morning during one of our knit-a-longs, the table will
be surrounded by women who all have a similar passion for knitting and craft.” Chances are good that you know someone who can teach you, but if you don’t, Rhode Island is teeming with places where you can learn. Libraries are a great resource not only for books and Internet access, but for classes and meetups. If there isn’t a program at your local branch, don’t be shy to inquire. After patrons expressed an interest in having a group where they could exchange ideas and meet socially, Sheri Gavitt of the North Kingstown Free Library founded A Good Yarn. “Our group is for anyone who is interested in the fiber arts. We have members who knit, crochet, spin, weave, and dye yarn,” she explains. Barrington Library’s D’Avanza learned Sachiko embroidery from a class at The Stitchery arts education studio in Portsmouth, attends a weekly garment sewing class at Meraki Studio in Warren, and drops in for the knit session on Saturdays at Knit One Quilt Two. “[Erica] has taught me everything that I know about knitting. I hope to have her show me how to do cables soon,” she says.
“We knit, crochet, quilt, embroider, make clothing, do punch-needle embroidery, macramé… did we forget anything?” jokes Jocelyn Paquette of Meraki Studio, a maker-space she operates with friends Liz Bessel and Kristin Meranda. “We all learned as kids from our mothers, grandmothers, and aunts. We have lots of happy memories of sitting and stitching with people we love. There is something very satisfying about knowing someone is enjoying a craft because we shared it with them, and we love the idea of passing along skills that are an important part of our lives.” Knitting instructor Pam Sluter is energized by the flourishing scene, citing the annual Fiber Art Conference weekend at Slater Mill, events at shops like Cluck in Cranston, festivals at historic Coggeshall and Watson farms, and an annual retreat in Block Island, among others. Sluter teaches around the state, offering courses like sock making for Trad Arts Studio and shawl construction and color work at RISD’s Continuing Education program. “The main reason I love teaching is because

Known as Casapinka in knitting circles, Bronwyn lives in the West Bay and travels the state and country encouraging knitters to get confident with color at events hosted by yarn shops and knitting guilds. “I also get asked to do knitting cruises,” she says, adding, “You don’t tend to see these knitting fanatics out and about unless you know where to look but they are quite plentiful!” In addition to having a strong presence on social media platforms, Casapinka has a podcast. Thanks to the Internet, discovering like-minded makers both near and far isn’t difficult. One such group is Providence Knits. With nearly ninety members, the group describes itself as an “informal craft circle” and uses its online platform to plan offline meetups. Most every fiber

artist cites Ravelry as an invaluable resource; what started as a blog, the site has grown into a user-driven hub for all things knitting and crochet. “I also feel like Instagram is one of my social fiber art groups,” says Katy Westcott known for her bamboo button and wooden tool business Katrinkles. “I love seeing what people are making and posting and it's so fun to be in touch with so many people there.” And let’s not forget about the local coffee shop. Erica Smith has been meeting with the same group of women for coffee and knitting every Wednesday night at her neighborhood Starbucks for several years now, although her favorite spot to create is in front of the fireplace with a warm apple cider. “There is nothing like bundling up in knitwear head to toe. There really is no bad weather, only poor clothing choices… and hand-knit socks help!” Editor’s note: Find most everyone in this article on Instagram with their name as their handle

The kids’ classic Christmas tale comes to life aboard Blackstone Valley’s Polar Express
ALL ABOARD!
Blackstone Valley captures the essence of Christmas with their family favorite Polar Express Train Ride From November 16 - December 23, the Historic Blackstone Valley Train Depot transforms into a Christmas Wonderland to present their highly anticipated annual Polar Express Train Ride. Adults and children are encouraged to don their warmest winter pajamas and arrive early to the whimsically decorated Train Depot, which transports guests to a world of red-and-green, snowflakes, wrapped presents, and lots of Christmas spirit. Pose for photos with characters from the show in front of a beautiful, custom-made backdrop of the massive steam engine tugging through falling snow. Watch your little ones color festive illustrations and write letters to Santa in the kid’s area. Stroll through The Polar Express gift shop, which sells official merchandise including teddy bears, santa hats, bathrobes, scarves, and ornaments, amongst other holiday gear.
When the conductor shouts “All aboard!”, however, is when the real fun begins, and you hop on a train to the North Pole. For 90 minutes, you’ll be whisked away to the enchanted world of a Christmas classic: Settle in for a reading of the classic children’s story, sing-a-longs of catchy holiday tunes, hot chocolate served up in a souvenir Polar Express mug, the giving of silver bells and golden tickets, cookies, games, and a visit from Santa where he’ll deliver the first gift of Christmas to every child. When you’ve arrived at your destination and exit the train, you’ll be met with the first “snow” – faux white flurries falling softly in a wintery farewell. A curious sense of wonder captures both kids and parents alike, who leave the station filled with the feeling they’ve experienced nothing short of Christmas magic. A behind-the-scenes look at what goes into decorating historic homes for the holidays By Megan Schmit

Garland wrapped around sloped railings. Trees strung with lights and ornaments. Poinsettias, wreaths, and brightly colored bows. Warm hues of gold, green, and red. This is what the holidays look like in Rhode Island’s most festive historic homes – but how?

“It’s a house, so we’re representing and interpreting its history,” says Kathy Hartley, President of Friends of Hearthside. In the case of Lincoln’s Hearthside House Museum, which has been featured in Yankee Magazine and Early American Life, the Christmas decoration process is completely volunteer: Individuals or groups adopt a room to decorate appropriately. Appropriately meaning period-appropriate; decorations can span through the eras of the house’s lifetime, from 1810 when it was built to when the last owners moved out in 1997. Each room has its own personality, says Hartley. The attic is rustic, the formal room is glitzy Victorian, the kitchen is colonial, and the library is reminiscent of the ‘50s and ‘60s. In total, it takes two-and-a-half weeks and 15 volunteers to ready all ten rooms for the season’s debut on December 2. Hartley wants visitors to learn just as much as they admire: “How did we come about to hang a Christmas stocking? What is the meaning of holly and mistletoe?”
“We all grumble when we’re working so hard, but then when the public comes in and you watch how they enjoy it, it really does make it all worth it,” she confesses. Jim Donahue, Curator of Historic Landscapes and Christmas Coordinator at the Newport Mansions, feels similarly. “Decorating goes on while the houses are still open, so we’ll always get people asking ‘Can you come do mine next?’” Donahue has been in charge of decorating the Mansions for the last ten years, alongside a team of volunteers who dedicate 400 hours of help over the four to five week installation process. For Donahue, however, the planning process for next year starts as soon as this year’s trimmings have come down in January. Like Hearthside, ornamentation is matched to the house: The Elms is French Country, The Breakers is modeled after the Vanderbilt family Christmases, and Marble House is “just over the top.” The crowning jewel on the holiday crown is The Breakers’ massive,

15-foot poinsettia tree, composed of 150 plants arranged on a wooden frame to resemble an evergreen, grown by the Gardens and Grounds Department. All those involved in decorating agree that planning is the most crucial component. “The undertaking of decorating for Christmas at Linden Place starts with a concise game plan in place,” divulges professional landscape artist and board member Daniel Wallace. Like Donahue, he’s been orchestrating the process for the last ten years. He and his “wonderful and creative group of volunteers” stick to traditional decor, but sometimes add a twist with current trends, colors, and materials. This season’s theme, “The Art of Christmas,”

will feature works by contemporary Rhode Island artists. Amazingly, Linden’s installation, due to a strict set of guidelines, takes only two days. While you may have wandered the halls of these historic homes in their usual state, there is truly something special about seeing their glimmering transformation for the holidays, a product of many, many hours of hard work. Donahue insists, “Even if you’ve done [a tour] before, it’s well worth another visit.” Find other historic homes dressed in their holiday best: Blithewold in Bristol, Aldrich Mansion and Clouds Hill Victorian House Museum in Warwick, Lippitt House in Providence, and Sprague Mansion in Cranston.

DASHING THROUGH THE SNOW Where to ski, sled, and skate across the state By Caroline Boyle
Just because the temperature has dropped doesn’t mean all the fun has to move indoors. What better way to embrace the season than to try your hand at one of the three S’s: skiing, sledding, and skating. Whether your preferred mode of winter transportation is hitting the slopes on skis or gliding over snow and ice on a sled or pair of skates, one thing’s for sure – the frozen Ocean State has plenty of places to let your love of winter fun run wild.
SLEDDING Don your warmest winter gear and climb the biggest hill you can find to indulge in your favorite childhood winter pastime: sledding. SAVORING HOLIDAY FEASTS • TURKEY FARMS • HOT DRINKS • KOSHER EATS A&J Bakery has crafted allergen-free gingerbread fun for the holidays
THE HOUSE THAT ALLERGEN-FRIENDLY GINGERBREAD BUILT A&J Bakery in Cranston makes a safe gingerbread house kit for all
There are a lot of holiday traditions: trimming the tree, stringing up lights – and, for many, decorating a gingerbread house. Kids and parents have a sweet time putting together cookie walls, piped frosting, and sugary candy elements. And yet, asked A&J Bakery in Cranston, what about the kids who can’t indulge in gluten-filled fun? The establishment is known for their nut- and gluten-free goodies, and they have even crafted “The World’s Only Allergen-Friendly Gingerbread House Kit.” A&J’s kit comes with all the fixings to make a traditional gingerbread house, minus the allergens: Ingredients do not include tree nuts, peanuts, gluten, wheat, soy, dairy, or sesame – plus they’re vegan. You get pre-baked gingerbread house pieces (hand-cut to prevent cross-contamination), a display
board, five types of allergen-friendly candy (jelly beans, fruit discs, lollipops, rainbow tarts, and spice drops), and non-edible decorations (toy figurines). If your family is a newbie to cookie construction, don’t worry; instructions for assembly and two easy frosting recipes are included. Otherwise, dive right into the whimsy with your little one and have fun making a one-of-a-kind edible home, however haphazardly designed and decorated. “These gingerbread house making memories can last forever,” A&J promises. These “do-it-yourself” kits are made-to-order and available for purchase online or in-store through December 24. If you’re curious to learn more, look on their website for a list of all ingredients, allergen facts, and FAQs. AAndJBakery.net –Megan Schmit

For many people, this is the best time of year – those weeks between the first day of autumn and New Year’s Eve. Everything about this season speaks to tradition, especially the food. Pumpkin spice devotees go on the hunt. An uncle insists that cranberry sauce be served straight from the can, ridges intact. There’s likely chouriço or salsiccia in your dressing. And whether your night before Christmas features sugar plums or plum sauce, chances are good you buy it at the same place every year. But sometimes these family rituals are hard to keep up. Budgets, distance, and schedules may get in the way. Old-fashioned feasts are a hard thing to pull off on your own, but there’s almost always a local institution to help holiday orphans celebrate in style. So, in the event you need to break out of your traditions, here’s a list of events that should coax you out of your familiar den. (In an appropriately chunky sweater, of course).

GOBBLE THIS
Just in time for Thanksgiving, find your bird from a local turkey farm
A rafter of turkeys mill around Baffoni’s Poultry Farm in Johnston
By Isabella DeLeo
Photo courtesy of Baffoni’s Poultry Farm
Once you arrive at Baffoni’s Poultry Farm in Johnston, past the storefront that sells processed turkey and chicken and up a grassy hill, the turkeys are clucking away. Paul Baffoni, the farm’s self-described turkey whisperer, houses the birds in “porches” – wooden structures with gabled roofs, elevated a few feet from the ground – and the birds light up when he starts “speaking” to them. He puts his lips together, lets out a long whistle, and the flock begins clucking almost in unison. It’s a glorious, gobbling symphony. The farm has been serving the community since 1935, making it a fourth-generation, family-run operation. Many of the customers have been coming there for decades, entrusting Baffoni’s with the important task of turning a turkey into a Thanksgiving showstopper. Birds arrive as day-old “poults,” soaking up sunlight in their open-air porches, and are hand-fed an all-vegetarian, antibiotic-free diet. They eat grains and munch on kale and Swiss chard every three days, leafy-green nutrition that also keeps their minds and bodies engaged (Baffoni says that turkeys, even more than chickens, can sometimes be rather “finicky”). Baffoni has the luxury of spending quality time with the turkeys, since the high season comes during the week before Thanksgiving. Then, he’s busy processing up to 450 animals a day, as the farm provides only fresh, unfrozen meat. Even the USDA officer who certifies the farm often remarks that his are “special turkeys.”

HOT SHOTS
Local ingredients enhance these cold-weather drinks – whether for a New Year’s party or a snuggle by the hearth By Robert Isenberg
For many of us, winter nights in New England are a dreamy time – of steaming mugs and boozy sojourns on the sofa. If nothing else, we look forward to hot chocolate and spiced cocktails. How to make it even better? Putting a Rhode Island spin on timeless classics, thanks to local spirits and ingredients.
Coffee Milk White Russian The traditional White Russian is a simple mix of vodka, Kahlua, and cream. But you could easily swap a drizzle of Autocrat or Dave’s Coffee Milk for the Kahlua, and if you want to try some smooth local spirits, procure some KEEL Vodka. Go easy on the coffee syrup; that powerful taste is packed with sugar, but luckily KEEL vodka is only 58 calories per serving. KeelVodka.com DavesCoffee.com

Mulled Wine Come winter, many of us swear by a mug of warmed-up wine with spices. Most Rhode Island wines stand on their own, and there’s no reason to taint them with cinnamon sticks and orange slices. But if you have a bottle of local red to spare – say, a Newport Vineyards merlot, or a Rhode Island Red by Carolyn’s Sakonnet – you’ll probably relish the result. Sweeten the deal with honey by Annie B’s or Aquidneck Honey. NewportVineyards.com, SakonnetWine.com; AnnieBsFarm.com, AquidneckHoney.com
Hot Cacao There are a zillion ways to make hot cocoa, but Enjoyful Foods offers a very original take: cacao, the bulbous plant that is the base for chocolate. Not only do Enjoyful cacao packets come in four varieties, but they’re nutritious and easy to experiment with. Enjoyful-Foods.MyShopify.com
Cider Hot Toddy Contrary to popular belief, you don’t have to make a hot toddy with apple cider – but this is New England, so why wouldn’t you? There are a dozen orchards across the state that produce apple cider, and you’d be – well – hard-pressed not to try them. The main ingredient, though, is the whiskey, and here we recommend a bottle of Sons of Liberty bourbon. Meanwhile, Sons of Liberty also released an Apple Cider Cocktail in a can. SolSpirits.com
HeyRhody.com
Hot Buttered Rum Rum was once a hallmark of the New England coast, but Rhode Island is down to one major rum-maker: Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Co., which produces Thomas Tew. Buttered rum is quite the concoction, but once you’ve boiled the water, cinnamon, ground cloves, and, of course, butter, you’ve got yourself a savory cold-weather treat. NewportCraft.com
Eggnog What do you spike your eggnog with? It’s a heated topic, even if you drink it cold, so you might consider visiting White Dog Distilling in Pawtucket, which makes small-batch whiskey, rum, gin, and even moonshine. Plus, a White Dog bottle makes a great gift. WhiteDogDistilling.com

HOLD THE SHELLFISH! Where to buy Kosher in the Ocean State By Robert Isenberg
Keeping kosher isn’t easy. The Torah is full of laws, or mitzvot, about the proper way to eat, and this dietary regimen becomes especially important around Jewish holidays. Some rules are strict (who can pick your grapes) and some rules may seem arbitrary (eating leavened bread around Passover), but there’s good news: Kosher diets are generally good for you, no matter what your religious persuasion. After all, what doctor wants you to guzzle milk with your pulled-pork sandwich? There are lots of restaurants in the state that serve kosher meals, but what about making it yourself? Where do you find the ingredients for bubbie to assemble the perfect Hanukkah meal? Rhode Island is no Brooklyn, but we do have a handful of skilled kosher purveyors. If this ancient biblical diet sounds like it’s for you, consider a chat with Rhode Island Kosher (RIKosher.org), a Providence-based organization that offers free consultations for the kashrut-curious. RIK not only explains the nutritional benefits of keeping kosher, but consultants offer a step-by-step guide to finding local products that even King David would approve of.

Ahava Catering Rhode Island is overflowing with caterers, but only one of them specializes in sweet potato latkes and challah bread. Ahava Catering serves all of Southern New England, and Chef Freda Baer is especially keen on Jewish celebrations – Bar Mitzvahs, high holy days, and even shabbat specials. AhavaCatering.com Bottles Fine Wine Bottles sells just about everything, from local craft beer to obscure brands of cognac, so it should be no surprise that the Providence liquor store also sells a nice selection of kosher wines. And this isn’t just the usual Manischewitz; you can find Mademoiselle rosé, crafted in Israel, and the Sparkling Muscat, made by The Butcher’s Daughter of France, among others. 141 Pitman Street, Providence. BottlesFineWine.com Davis Dairy Products It doesn’t get more authentic than this: a corner shop on Hope Street, with a little awning that reads “Davis.” The store sells kosher dairy products, but you can also find jars of gefilte fish, slices of corned beef, and piles of cured lox. 721 Hope Street, Providence. Facebook: Davis Dairy Products Eastside Marketplace To be fair, most major supermarkets have their share of kosher products, usually stocked in the ambiguous “ethnic foods” aisle. But Eastside Marketplace has its own kosher butcher, who spends Monday and Thursday mornings carving hunks of meat and fish, all under the supervision of an official mashgiach. 165 Pitman Street, Providence. EastSideMarket.com/kosher Rhody Fresh Rhody Fresh is best known as a hyper-local dairy, producing butter, cheese, and ice cream from the udders of Rhode Island cows. (They also abstain from artificial growth hormones). But the best news is that every single product at Rhody Fresh is kosher-certified – and it even tastes divine. Available in a variety of grocery stores. RhodyFresh.com

The showroom, a 20,000 square foot space conveniently located in Pawtucket, features over 400 scratch-and-dent appliances. “There is no shortage of anything,” says owner Michael Gaffin. FIRST SPLASH
2019 AND CHILL Psych yourself up for the coolest - and coldest – beach tradition of the year No matter where you end up crashing after the ball drops on New Year’s Eve, there’s a good chance there’s a polar plunge close by. Here in New England, where the ocean only ever gets “warm enough,” a New Year’s Day dip can be an arctic nightmare or a mildly unseasonable folly depending on how Mother Nature decides to play it. Never taken the dive yourself? Here are a few things to know: the worst part is actually standing in freezing cold sand while barefoot; the actual plunge is way more fun than it sounds; the icy water will
shock that New Year’s Eve hangover right out of you. Down in Newport, the New Year’s Day Polar Bear Plunge is making frigid waves to benefit A Wish Come True Inc., a local organization that’s been serving sick children and their families for more than 30 years, while Narragansett’s Penguin Plunge for Special Olympics RI happens at Roger Wheeler State Beach. Others will announce registration as we inch closer to the New Year, but in the meantime, start acclimating yourself to the bone-chilling cold. –Tony Pacitti Photo courtesy of Polar Bear Plunge
