FAUX REAL

The Accidental Farmgirl’s wreaths welcome each season with style Jessica Billings began making wreaths as a way to experiment with ideas that her aunt found on Pinterest. Before long, this pastime blossomed into The Accidental Farmgirl Co., a thriving home accent business with over 20,000 followers on Instagram. Jessica’s handcrafted farmhouse goods include wreaths laden with realistic-looking faux fruit and florals, all created in her Exeter home studio. Drawing inspiration from visuals and textures, Jessica also relies on the changing seasons to inspire her designs, and incorporates elements like pomegranates and red apples in the fall and winter, and lemons and green apples in the spring and summer. Jessica believes that every front door should have a wreath, but she also suggests hanging wreaths from mirrors, above mantles, on big chalkboards, or to accent any blank space in need of a little decorative touch. -Kim Tingle Photo courtesy of The Accidental Farmgirl

WELCOME HOME The Front Door Project highlights the entries to historic Rhode Island homes

By Robert Isenberg Wreaths, mats, sconces, transoms, carvings, arches, and iron hinges – if you can use it to decorate an entryway, Deb Cohen has photographed it. A few years ago, Cohen started The Front Door Project as an Instagram hobby, thinking her affection for New England doorways was rare. Now, over 1,300 photographs later, Cohen has a website, 67,000+ followers, and many, many pictures of Providence. “I really enjoy spending time in Providence,” she says. Cohen started the project in her native Connecticut, but the site gave her a reason to roam. “The Downcity and College Hill neighborhoods in particular are spots I admire for the architectural variety and history. Rhode Island is fortunate to have a large inventory of historic architecture in places where anyone can see it, such as Benefit Street in Providence or the various neighborhoods in Newport. Both of those areas are compact and very walkable, and make you feel like you have gone back in time 200 years.” Cohen asserts that most of the architecture in Rhode Island is consistent with design patterns across New England, yet each antique home asserts its own individuality. “In general, historic houses were not cookie cutter, as so many new houses are from the 1950s and subsequent. Every home truly is unique in its own way, whether it be the setting, materials used, size and scale, or architectural details utilized.” TheFrontDoorProject.com

The front door of a home is interesting to me when it makes a visual impact. Its architecture alone might make a statement, but a front door especially stands out when the homeowner makes an effort to create a welcoming focal point through their use of color, hardware, and a bit of whimsy such as a fun door knocker or unique wreath. - Deb Cohen

RUSTIGIAN RUGS,

Rhode Island’s one-stop destination for fine rugs, quality

carpet and expert care, is now an international award-winning store. In January, owner Roz Rustigian traveled to Hannover, Germany where she was hailed as Carpet! magazine's "Retailer of the Year" at the Domotex international flooring fair. The award caps Rustigian Rugs' almost ninety years of excellence in the rug and carpet trade, which all began when "Rusty" Rustigian first hung a modest shingle outside his Benefit Street home. Roz still lives there but moved the business in 1981 to its present showroom, a landmark neoclassical bank building at One Governor Street. From the beginning Rustigian's earned its reputation for service and expertise, helping homeowners and designers select the perfect floor covering to suit their distinctive décor and the demands of daily living. Rustigian's specializes in challenging spaces, spiral staircases, custom projects, and striking just the right balance between luxury and practicality. Their experienced staff is dedicated to the fine art of customer service and well-seasoned in project management. Rustigian’s is Rhode Island’s exclusive dealer of Stark Studio Rugs, Roger Oates runners and other fine brands. A long-standing collaboration with Adler's Hardware enables both stores to blend the advantages of a metropolitan design center with Providence’s convenience and personal touch. We invite you to stop in and see for yourself. Bring photos, swatches or idea boards: Rustigian's will show you an array of rugs and carpets with textures, colors and designs to enhance your home.

BROWSING • AIR PLANTS

BREATHE EASY Jordan’s Jungle in Pawtucket specializes in air plants, the low-stress house plant

By Robert Isenberg One minute, you’re walking down a bland corridor. But turn a corner, and you’ll find Jordan’s Jungle, a lush greenhouse of levitating plants. The old brick mill in Pawtucket may seem like an odd place for a nursery, but owners Darin Wildenstein and Jordan Ford love their 4,000 square feet of semi-tropical showroom. Here they display 150 varieties of air plants – more scientifically known as Tillandsia – a genus of perennials that latch onto larger things. “Air plants are great because they do not grow in soil,” says Dann. “They are epiphytes, which means that they would naturally grow suspended from other plants or objects. They are not parasites, as they do not steal any nutrients or anything from their host; they just use the host as a place to call home. They do not drink through their roots, as other plants do, but instead from tiny little fuzzy spots on their leaves, called Trichomes.” Air plants are mostly native to Mexico and Latin America, and they wouldn’t fare well in a New England winter. But they make great house plants, since they require elementary care and will quickly freshen up stuffy living quarters. “They all take carbon dioxide and nitrogen out of the air and release clean oxygen,” says Dann. “So many people come into the Jungle and as they walk in, they take a big breath, because there is a noticeable difference in the air quality when you have plants cleaning it for you.” 545 Pawtucket Ave, Pawtucket, JordansJungle.net

CREATIVE OUTLET

Wireless chandeliers are a bright idea After being unable to find a chandelier without the hassle of plugs, North Kingstown-based designer Nicole Ketchum decided to create her own version without lights. After two years of research and design, Chandelier by NK made its debut in January 2014. The suggestion to use acrylic as the base material came from her husband, also a designer. Acrylic is usable both indoors and outside, and its colorful nature “happily shines and casts fun shadows in the sun.” Nicole sometimes draws inspiration from current design trends, but her creations mainly stem from what she “just loves.” She suggests hanging her chandeliers within the home, such as, “above a child’s bed or crib, in a playroom, home office, or, in a kitchen window.” Last year, Nicole was asked by Disney to design over 20 custom chandeliers to decorate one of their stores. Her creations have also caught the attention of Mattel and People Magazine. -Kim Tingle

NAILED IT

How to source and style your own gallery wall By Megan Schmit

The trend of hanging eclectic collections of art is no longer limited to actual galleries – it’s expanded into homes as a style statement. A gallery wall is an easy way to give a room some personality without wallpaper or paint. Whether you’re working with your own mismatched pieces or starting from scratch, here are some tips and tricks to build your own gallery wall.

1. GO VINTAGE Expand your shopping destinations from galleries and gift shops to include antique stores where you can find old artwork with character. Discover items like this watercolor by Mary Mason Brooks at Re in North Kingstown, or check out other vintage purveyors like White Star Antiques in Providence and Nick Haus in Warren. ReRhodeIsland.com WhiteStarAntiques.com NickHaus.com

2. FRAME IT Choose at least one unifying element to connect all of the separate pieces of art together, like custom frames. This mini oil painting by Karen Murphy in Riverside comes with one, but you can do it yourself with help from Providence Picture Frame or Picture This! Framing and Gallery in Wakefield. Other tie-ins include color scheme, subject, and style. KarenMurphyFineArt.com ProvidencePictureFrame.com PictureThisGalleries.com TIP: Anchor the gallery wall with one large piece, like how we used Rhode Island Tides by Amy Ryan found at Studio Hop in Providence. AmyRyan.net | StudioHopcom

3. MIX IT UP Not every piece of your gallery wall needs to be a painting on canvas or paper. Incorporate different materials, like maps or metal, such as this copper plate by Teresa Mowery of Patina Studio in Tiverton. PatinaStudio.com

4. SHOP LOCAL Rhode Island is a cultural hub for talented artists and makers. So, take advantage and scour your local galleries, shops, and co-ops for art like this Narwhal print from Frog & Toad in Providence. Other destinations include Hotpoint Emporium in Bristol, Yes! Gallery in Wickford, and Lou Lou’s Decor in Newport. FrogAndToadStore.com HotpointEmporium.com YesGallery.com LouLousDecor.com

TIP: For a fool-proof design, plan your layout before you pick up a hammer and nail. Try arranging the artwork on the floor or plot with paper templates taped to the wall. 2019 HEY RHODY HOME

DECORATING WITH Living Coral 16-1546

Local finds to energize spaces with Pantone’s Color of the Year By Elyse Major

For two decades, Pantone, the company primarily known for its color matching system, identifies a Color of the Year. This annually anticipated announcement influences decision-making in industries from packaging to fashion, but is also just plain fun for design geeks. In 2019, that color is Living Coral (PANTONE 161546), described by the company as “an animating and life-affirming coral hue with a golden undertone that energizes and enlivens with a softer edge.” While coral found in the Ocean State is often overlooked for its stony color, its existence alone is reason enough to embrace its brighter tropical cousin. Turn to the next page for where to spot coral accents – no SCUBA gear required.

9 exclusive home stores and ONE GREAT shopping experience

Kim Peterson, Designer

Just because a home is over a century old, doesn’t mean it needs to look dated. For this client, Kim Peterson of KEP Interior Designs knew she wanted the fireplace – original to the 1895 property – to serve as a focal point. “To keep it intact we wanted to use cool soft colors along with the depth and warmth of the brick, all while maintaining the integrity of the home’s age. I came up with the soft palette and then added the pop of brick red in pillows to tie the fireplace into the design,” says Kim.

This Net-Zero House A Jamestown home gets an efficiency makeover By Andrea E. McHugh Photos by Anthony Tieuli

Binge-watch the entire process of restoring the charm of this Jamestown bungalow while also making it energy efficient on This Old House. Find links and details at ThisOldHouse.com.

Architect Donald Powers has designed a number of “net-zero” communities with his firm over the years; that is, communities with homes that over the course of a full year, make as much energy as they use. Finally, he was tired of only talking the talk and sought to walk the walk. Along with his wife Dana and teenage sons Nate and Theo, Donald set out to find a home of their own to renovate and make net-zero. They found a 1,000-square-foot cottage in Jamestown built in the 1920s with two bedrooms and one bath. “That didn’t really matter to us because we knew we’d be completely gutting into the stud and starting over,” explains Donald, who ultimately doubled the size of the home. Although the Powers family already had four home renovations under their belt, this project was different. “The hardest part is getting the whole design and construction team to buy into the goals and pay attention to the details as they are building it,” says Donald. “We had a great team who all really got it.” He says his contractors knew what they were getting into and all the critical areas that needed to be addressed. “It’s all about reducing load and maximizing solar,” explains Donald.

The Jamestown Net-Zero Home features a 5.5 kilowatt solar panel system from Vivint Solar to offset the energy use. A dark, earth tone shingle complements the black panels and keeps them from upstaging the well manicured backyard oasis

2019 HEY RHODY HOME

In the winter, he explains, homes are typically net-negative when you are using more energy than the solar can produce. “In the summer, it switches, and you hope to be exporting energy to the grid. Over the whole year, you are trying to balance production of energy with the use of it.” Donald specifically designed the barn to have a long, south-facing slope to carry a lot of solar panels by Vivint Solar, a residential solar provider. There are other factors that contribute to its maximum efficiency. The house is insulated to about double the required minimum, has triple-glazed windows, and it is sealed against air leakage about three times better than the average new home. “Also, all of the fixtures, appliances, and systems are the highest efficiency possible,” adds Donald. Besides the obvious benefit of little to no electric bill, Donald says the home is very comfortable due to the very little amounts of air flow required from the heating and cooling. “There are absolutely no drafts in the house,” he says. “It’s also extremely quiet — the triple glazed windows and the insulation really cut down on the noise transfer from the outside.” “Even if you do not actually produce any energy through solar, the techniques of building a very well insulated, well air-sealed house requires a very good insulation system to bring in fresh air and manage humidity,” says Donald. “No house, no matter how well built to be net zero, [will be] if the occupants leave the lights on or windows open in the winter or are generally wasteful in how they live.”

White walls, windows, and floors left bare, repeated vertical lines, and natural wood combine to create a sense of flow in the open spaces of the Powers’ home.

THE NEW COASTAL

Put the anchors away! For these waterside homeowners it’s all about the vibe By Elyse Major Photography courtesy of Mark Lohman, styling by Fifi O’Neill

“Since we live at the beach I like to have elements with that vibe, but not in a traditional way. I love things that are worn and loved.” –Nancy Rafi

Visit the coastal decor section of most home furnishings stores and chances are good that you’ll find the typical trappings: navy and white stripes, anchor motifs, and perhaps signs in wood or canvas about life being better at the beach. However, not all lands’ end dwellers have the same interpretation of what it means to provide location cues indoors. For homeowners Gail Greenwood of Little Compton, Nancy Rafi of Wickford, and Nancy Chace of Bristol, living by the water means having digs where it’s okay to enter with sandy feet, comfort is key, views are unobstructed, and color signals all the feels of an endless summer. A common thread for this spin on coastal is that functionality is as crucial as design and ease of use. “It is important to me that a space be practical and stylish, durable and fun – where a balance exists between beauty and comfort,” says Chace of her historic home. “In a cottage most everything is touchable and somewhat bullet proof. There is a certain resignation to sandy feet on the floor and the embracing of imperfection that comes with a livable home. Often cottages have a collected feel where its belongings take on unique personality and meaning over time. A happy place where memories are made, and form, function, and fun reign supreme!”

“There is a certain resignation to sandy feet on the floor and the embracing of imperfection...” –Nancy Chace

COMMON ELEMENTS OF COASTAL STYLE For most Rhode Islanders, a water view doesn’t require a far drive or even a walk. Our state is lined with beaches and dotted with ponds and lakes. Whether your digs have a dock or you’re on a third floor in Providence, seaside style is in our DNA – after all, we are the Ocean State. Use these tips to bring a carefree vibe to wherever you are. No-fuss window treatments like blinds and Roman shades Furniture that is durable and comfortable Colors that evoke happiness Bare flooring Authentic natural objects such as seashells and stones Easy-care textiles such as slipcovers and tablecloths

LOFTY GOALS A Providence couple makes a large space into a cozy retreat that is anything but run-of-the-mill

Excerpt from Global Bohemian How to Satisfy Your Wanderlust at Home Fifi O’Neill Photography by Mark Lohman Reprinted with permission from CICO BOOKS

In Providence, the impressive complex Rising Sun Mills brings to mind the old saying “Birds of a feather flock together.” Built circa 1800 and named after their former function, the textile mills have been revived as live/work studios and lofts for artists and the once-abandoned buildings are now thriving with creatives of all disciplines, including Courtney Webster, an event stylist and project manager for an interior design studio in Boston, and her husband Brandon Aguiar, a painter. “We needed a space that could accommodate Brandon’s art studio,” Courtney says. “We fell in love with the raw, industrial character of the building with its original large windows, brick walls, and wood floor.” Living in a 1,300-square foot loft with such high ceilings takes some planning design wise. “We struggled a bit with how open the layout is! It was tricky to define spaces without anything feeling closed off,” Courtney admits. Yet within the floorplan concept the couple managed to create distinct areas linked by a neutral palette warmed with pink and blue color accents. “I love how well they pair with one another and how many different shades of each there are,”

64

HEY RHODY HOME 2019

The sofa, which the couple have had for a few years, received a new slipcover in neutral linen, while a shaggy throw from Urban Outfitters injects a bit of color and a lot of texture. When just a small dose is needed, dark wood and a bamboo tray can evoke exotic destinations without going all-out.

LEFT: An indigo blue armchair was chosen to provide contrast to the sofa.“We actually sanded the legs to the raw wood – they had been stained an umber color and were too dark,” Courtney says. The patterned, softly colored rug adds comfort underfoot. As for the shiny gold table, she adds, “We wanted something bold but that would also work well as an end table or a plant stand. We like to juxtapose reflective elements with more rustic ones.” Mission accomplished! A ladder adds vertical storage for globally-inspired textiles.

Courtney notes. Their individual sense of design also comes into play. “Brandon and I have blended a mix of bohemian, midcentury-modern, and rustic styles in our home to create a true reflection of us. We wanted it to feel honest and homey with a mix of functional and stylish pieces,” says Courtney, who mines inspiration from design books, Instagram, blogs, and her job. “I’m always surrounded by beautiful fabrics, and am constantly sourcing and selecting items for clients. I get to envision how things would work in my home and love taking that influence

and making it my own,” she explains. Courtney describes her style evolution to its present-day contemporary bohemian mood. “It has naturally morphed over the years. In our first apartment together, Brandon and I bought almost strictly Ikea and vintage. Then we started buying almost entirely midcentury modern. That felt too cold, so we introduced different textures and colors and it made the space feel warmer and more inviting. Since then we’ve only brought in pieces we truly love and it has felt more and more like home.”

ITCHER PERFECT Easy preparation and local ingredients make sangria the party beverage of choice

By Robert Isenberg • Photography by Brandon Harmon

Sangria is the ultimate party drink. It’s classy, it’s tasty, and it fits almost any occasion. Created in Spain, this festive punch is a host’s go-to beverage, no matter what the weather or time of year. Sangria can also be easy to make: Chop up your favorite fruits, toss them in a pitcher of wine, and maybe mix in some fruit juice and spritzer. Voila! Your back-porch dinner party is a hit! You can also take your sangria to the next level – and better yet, use a medley of Rhode Island ingredients. Gooseneck Vineyards has some lively reds for the task, and local rum doesn’t get better than small-batch maker White Dog Distilling. The finishing touch is Yacht Club soda, which could be Pineapple, Orange Seltzer, Fruit Punch, or any number of other flavors.

ENTERTAINING • CHEESE BOARD

15 MINUTE CHEESE BOARD with Jan Dane of Stock Culinary Goods By Elyse Major Jan Dane is self-professed about being food obsessed. Prior to opening her shop, Stock Culinary Goods, on Providence’s Hope Street, Jan was, among other things, the food forager at The Ocean House in Watch Hill. It was during this time that Jan connected with farmers and purveyors, cultivating relationships and getting to know all about where to get what throughout New England. When we asked Jan to create a cheese board for us, she arrived with market bags brimming with regionally sourced provisions and back stories. For Jan, a cheese board doesn’t need to be perfect, but visuals are everything, so start with a presentation board. “It elevates the whole thing,” says Jan, who compares putting together these tasty assemblages to playing in the sandbox. “Fuss, step back, move things around, and don’t be hemmed-in with symmetry,” she advises. And shop homegrown. “Be as local as possible,” begins Jan. “It’s the easiest way to support your local farmer.”

JAN DANE’S STOCK TIPS & TRICKS Begin with a presentation board, like this North Kingstown-made Gratitude board (availabe at Stock Culinary Goods). A wood cutting board is ideal; avoid ceramic or glass that are hard on knives. Keep cheese at room temperature. “Include something for everyone,” says Jan, who advises including meats, crackers, nuts, and fruit. Adorn with edible flowers. Consider using a theme. Don’t worry about perfection. Enjoy the process, and then dig in! Find most items displayed at Stock Culinary Goods, or ask Jan! 756 Hope Street, Providence 521-0101 • StockCulinaryGoods.com

How does blown-in mulch work? We deliver and install the mulch without it ever touching your driveway. When the truck arrives at the property, long hoses are pulled from the truck around the property to install the mulch directly into the beds at the depth the customer requests. The operator uses a remote control that allows materials to be precisely applied. It is very uniform and creates an even application. Normally, the process involves bringing wheelbarrow after wheelbarrow over to the beds one at a time. Having the mulch blown in saves time, and a lot of hard work. Our process is significantly faster and more convenient. What types of properties do you service? Can you do small properties? If mulch needs to be installed, we can do it! We service both commercial and residential properties throughout Rhode Island. And yes, we can install our products on smaller properties with a 10 yard minimum.

What kinds of products and other services do you provide? We have all kinds of mulches: brown, black, pine,

cedar, and more. Many are all-natural, some are color enhanced or organically enhanced. Our other services include Soil and Compost applications, Terraseeding, Certified Playground Chip installations and Erosion Controls like Silt Sock. When is the best time to install mulch? Spring for sure. Mulch is not only a fast way to make your property look its best, it’s also very beneficial to your soil and plants. It helps suppress weeds, retains moisture, adds nutrients, and moderates soil temperature. How long does a typical mulch installation take with this service? Well, every property is unique; it really depends on the layout and size of the beds. A 10-20 yard job can typically be completed in about an hour. What do you say to skeptics? We have always told potential customers, “Give us your most difficult job, the one you dread doing every year. Once they see us pull that off fast and efficiently, we have that customer for life. They’ll never touch a wheelbarrow again.”

Experience. Integrity. Results. “I’m committed to listing any type of property as well as matching buyers with the home of their dreams,” says Gerri Schiffman, an award-winning realtor celebrating her 26th year with Residential Properties LTD. A career professional with the leading agency since 1994, Gerri has an unparalleled level of institutional knowledge, expertise, and personal experience about the Providence area market. “My husband Fred and I raised four children on the East Side. I know firsthand what buyers are looking for and how to help sellers make their properties appealing to these buyers.” Having built and renovated several homes of her own - along with working closely with contractors on many projects - Gerri really understands the potential of any property. “I love all kinds of houses - large or small, old or new, traditional or contemporary. I find beauty, purpose, and opportunity in all of them.” Gerri also has a keen eye for preparing a home for sale, using staging, floor plans, professional photography, videos, individual websites, and digital

media. “When I list a property, I am very particular about how that property is presented to potential buyers on the internet, in written advertising, during open houses, and for private showings.” She is totally dedicated to her clients, always making herself available no matter the day or time, whether providing insightful feedback to sellers, or reviewing the necessary steps in the buying process with first time homebuyers who might need more guidance. “Selling real estate is such a rewarding experience. It is a great feeling to help sellers find the right buyer who appreciates their unique property or to help buyers throughout the often arduous and competitive process of finding that special house that will become their new home.” Client Testimonial Gerri’s reputation as the best realtor in Providence proved to be spot-on for us. Thanks to her insights and knowledge about the neighborhood, the real estate market, and the tactics to use in successfully presenting a property, we entered into a contract for the sale of our East Side condo within 48 hours of being listed. Gerri is simply a top notch professional, and we recommend her enthusiastically. - Don H

GO FOR THE GOLD They say that all that is gold does not glitter – and in the case of Rhody Gold, that’s certainly true. The Original Gold is a compost made from a mixture of local materials: food scraps and coffee grounds to sawdust and wood chips. It’s produced by The Compost Plant, a commercial operation based out of Providence that is dedicated to making sustainable soil enhancers for local farmers and gardeners. But you don’t have to have a green thumb – use it as a top dressing in your home or kitchen garden. CompostPlant.com -Megan Schmit Photo courtesy of The Compost Plant
