Hey Rhody SEPTEMBER 2020 |
HeyRhody.com
We have exciting news: Hey Rhody, your favorite free statewide special edition magazine, is now bringing you big love for the smallest state every month! It’s been quite a year so far but we’re Rhode Islanders, so we’ve kept calm and carried on – with plenty of frozen Del’s and baskets of calamari in hand, of course. Back in March, as we were preparing to send an issue to the press, we received the stay-at-home orders. As many of our magazine distribution points are small businesses who had to temporarily close, we decided to put our printed magazines on hold. During those “dark times” we pivoted efforts into our website and social media, and then phase by phase and one by one, we’ve relaunched each publication in the Providence Media family of free regional lifestyle magazines: Providence Monthly, So Rhode Island, and The Bay. Yup, all sister publications. What’s new about Hey Rhody? Our art department has enjoyed making some design changes that we love and hope you will, too. Our editorial content, while still packed with the useful guides you’ve come to know and enjoy, now also include more stories showcasing the amazing things people are doing around the state. Our Rhody Gem
column – which spotlights a business that may have somehow missed your radar (but you must know about) – makes its Hey Rhody premiere. What’s the same? That down-toearth unstuff y vibe and adoration for all things Ocean State that is an inherent part of everything we do. In this special relaunch issue you’ll find so many things to do to experience fall. Sure, you need to wear a mask, but autumn was made for socially distanced activities! There are farm scavenger hunts, scenic trails, and plenty of pick-your-own. We’ve got a roundup of RI-made school supplies, a new book for kids authored by a local T V personality, must-try food and drinks, and so much more. We love making magazines and we’re so excited to have Hey Rhody back. Enjoy, be inspired, and stay well ! Editor In Chief

D e cor a n d Gift Sh o p What it is: Two floors of curated countr y home decor and seasonal g ifts, rang ing from farmhouse accents to g ourmet jarred preser ves and bath and body products. This month’s displays are decked out in Halloween and autumn accessories.
Where to find it: Located in the charming countr y setting of historic Chepachet Villag e, find the shop nestled among a row of antique stores and the Glocester Heritag e Society.
W h a t m a k e s i t a R h o d y G e m? Step foot inside the double wooden doors and feel transported to a 19th centur y Americana mercantile, complete with a candy counter, soft vintage lighting , and a wall of wax candles. Arg uably the oldest continuously operating general store in America, Brown & Hopkins Countr y Store brings old-fashioned hospitality to selling locally made gifts and artisan wares. In this age of social distancing , a new ecommerce website allows for online shopping , and Facebook videos offer a glimpse inside if you have to stay home. Fortunately, their doors are open for g uests to indulge in the full experience of meandering through displays of honey, maple syrup, and soaps, arranged around countr y home pieces like braided rugs and vintage table linens. Says an outof-state visitor longing for a return journey, “As soon as I walk through the door, something magical would happen. The ambiance of the shop is so therapeutic.”

art bike, part railcar, these whimsically named “explorers” traverse the railways along the Narragansett Bay at a hands-free, leisurely pace. Once you and your fellow pedal-ers get over the thrill of testing the speed of these bad boys (while keeping a safe distance between cars, of course), you might even forget you’re pedaling at all. Starting at the Portsmouth Depot, you can choose between the one-way Northern Ramble route passing private waterfront estates, or the Southern Circuit, an out-andback journey with a waterfront picnic area at

the Bayside Station midway through. But for an authentic autumn experience, your best bet is the lantern-lit Fireside Tour, which is the Southern Circuit route, only at twilight, and reimagined this year for socially distanced camaraderie over private fire pits. “ We used to offer s’mores,” explains owner and founder Mar y Joy Lu. “Now, you can BYO-s’mores!” And if you forget, individual kits will be available to purchase before you hop on your rail bike. Masks and distance ensure safety at the loading station and bikes are wiped down for each g uest. The ride
itself is a mask-free voyage with cars spread far enough apart, you likely won’t see another member of the fleet until pedaling into the campfire site. Fall, especially, reveals unique views along the way. “Once the leaves come off a lot of the trees, you get even more access to the view of the Narragansett Bay. The things you came and saw in the summer will be different,” says Lu. “It’s ver y romantic. It’s a perfect date night or a perfect little family recreational outing.” Reserve an autumn tour online before you visit. Portsmouth, R ailExplorers.net

hen you live in a state as beautiful as ours, it’s easy to take places for granted and – even as small as Little Rhody is – miss a few places. Each month, local tastemaker and world traveler Ingrid Brown will take us on a native’s tour of local destinations. Whether you’ve been before or have it on your bucket list, stay tuned for these fun trips, limited travel required! ...... If you haven’t visited Newport in a while, it’s time to return. The City by the Sea is, of course, filled with an incredible coastline, colonial homes, a rich sailing history, unique boutiques, and decadent restaurants. The many mansions, scenic Cliff Walk, and beaches should all be on the top of your must list, but here are a few other ways you can enjoy this coastal community.
FA M I LY A D V E N T U R E En route, take a brief detour for Green Animals Topiary Garden in Portsmouth. The property spans a seven-acre estate that is the most northern and oldest topiary garden in the country. The gardens are a fun adventure to do with kids: We walked around and found different groomed trees that were shaped to look like giraffes, lions, pineapples, and my daughter’s favorite, a unicorn. There are countless pathways and numerous varieties of flowers, an orchard, and an herb and vegetable garden. The 1859 Victorian Brayton house that overlooks the bay was also a show stopper. Pro tip: Pack a picnic lunch to enjoy in the gardens.
T R E AT YO U R S E L F One of my favorite stores is Kimberly Pucci Atelier. Located on Bellevue Avenue, find one-of-a-kind custom leather purses in a variety of colors and textures. Nearby, discover all kinds of shops and eateries, and the Newport Art Museum, which recently reopened and features an Andy Warhol exhibit.

PICS OR IT DIDN’T HAPPEN What’s a vacation without photos? I discovered local photographer Hilary Block and fell in love with her work; she still shoots in film, which I found both exciting and refreshing. Hilary was able to capture my family with a backdrop of panoramic views of Narragansett Bay, while being so patient with our girls for this special souvenir.
A L L A B OA R D It’s not always easy to please the whole family, but a sailing tour was a Brown family favorite. There are many excursions available, and knowledgeable sailboat captains will teach you about the histor y of Newport while pointing out historic buildings and dropping factoids. For photo -enthusiasts, the water offers a different vantage point of the city and sailboats.
I N TO T H E S U N S E T On your daycation, be sure to stick around to catch a sunset. My top location is the Ocean Cliff Hotel. True to its name, you can see the Atlantic and the Newport Bridge with sail boats floating by from the property’s rolling hills. It’s a picture-perfect end to a pictureperfect day.

usic lovers g ather each Labor Day Weekend on the salty shoreline of Ninigret Pond in Charlestown for Rhythm & Roots. The festival “kept the vibe alive” September 4-6, but from an online venue. Over thirty films of past shows, featuring Los Lobos, Rosanne Cash, Keb’ Mo’, and the Mavericks, streamed in hig h-definition on their website for free. “It’s just our way of tr ying to bring a little happiness, and to bring the whole community back tog ether, to keep that spirit connected and alive,” says director Chuck Wentworth. “Really, that’s our main g oal.” Just like the leaves are chang ing , so will this equally vibrant season of festivals. Due to restrictions surrounding COVID -19, many of the state’s beloved autumn celebrations won’t take place, like the Johnston Apple Festival, Woonsocket Autumnfest, Misquamicut Fall Fest, and Warren Folks Fest, among several others. However, fall festivities are far from out of the picture, and while they mig ht look a bit different this year, many of these special events have found creative ways to pivot. “ We immediately started to think about how we can adapt,” begins WaterFire Providence’s managing director Peter Mello, “because it’s important to continue to create art in challenging times like this.” The nonprofit already launched alternative programming like its virtual live stream of the Beacon of Hope and outdoor arts performances Decameron in partnership with the Wilbury Theatre Group. This fall, they will offer dynamic art installations inside the WaterFire Arts Center and Museum in Providence’s Valley Arts District, but will hold off on basin lightings in the river. Also determined to bring art to the people, the 22nd Annual Pawtucket Arts Fest will take place September 4-13, thanks largely to a generous sponsorship donation by the Pawtucket Teachers Alliance. “[The Alliance] saw that the public needs some type of outlet, that art still ser ves an important purpose,” says festival director Anthony Ambrosino, “and that makes me even more appre-

ciative of being associated with them.” A slate of programs includes children’s crafts, dining on Main Street, music from Mixed Magic Theater, a Har vest Kitchen Farmers Market, and an Enchanted Garden living art exhibit at Slater Park by TEN31 Productions. Fall festivals in Rhody also celebrate our love for food, and while we won’t be driving to Narragansett for the annual Calamari Festival, we still get to indulge in some New England classics. The 10th Annual Rhode Island Seafood Festival honored the har vest of the sea ashore Narragansett Bay on September 12 and 13. The festival was nearly canceled, says TJ McNulty of Grand Festivals, but “we’re making the effort for vendors because they’ve been with us for so long , we owe them that.” Those vendors include Matunuck Oyster Bar, Shuckin’ Truck, Redstreet Kitchen, Sunset Farm, and Behan Family Farm, which will all offer takeout. Then on September 26, the Ocean State Oyster Festival, in collaboration with Trinity Beer Garden, will host table seating with access to raw bars from local farms, grills, local brews, and live music at Biltmore Park in Providence. That same day on Aquidneck Island, Escobar’s Highland Farm will host its annual Corn Maze Pumpkin Festival. The maze, shaped like a tractor, celebrates farmers who continue to work despite modern obstacles, says director Stuart MacNaught, “because farmers have to keep going. No matter what, the cows have to be milked twice a day.” Other anticipated autumn events have also adapted creatively, like the Roger Williams Park Zoo Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular which has turned into a drive-through affair all October long. The annual Har vest Fair at the Norman Bird Sanctuary in Middletown also boasts special surprises, inviting folks to pick up hay bales and stakes for a homemade scarecrow contest, attend a drive-in movie on the nature preser ve, and interact with wildlife experts in a virtual lecture series. “Right now conser vation is having its moment,” says the nonprofit’s director Kaity Ryan. Plus, autumn is prime time for a breath of crisp air at this seaside Sachuest Point sanctuary.

The Essential
FALL BUSHEL LIST 100+ must-do’s to experience autumn in Little Rhody
Is any season more anticipated than autumn? On that first chilly night we get giddy over making plans to pick more apples than we could ever consume or venturing to cornfields to get lost, and every drive becomes a leaf-peeping tour. Not even COVID-19 can stop the beauty of a Rhode Island fall. And while things might be different, there are still so many things to do. Find them right here in this useful guide known affectionately as The Bushel List.
FALL BUSHEL LIST
NORTHERN RHODE ISL AND Farmers Markets: Through mid- to late-October enjoy buying fresh produce, flowers, and more from local farms and vendors in Central Falls and Woonsocket (Tuesdays), Pawtucket (Wednesdays), and Smithfield (Sundays). Find more details on times and locations at FarmFreshRI.org Food Trucks: Sip and savor your favorite food vendors, plus enjoy live music and a beer tent, with food truck nights in Woonsocket (October 8) and Harrisville (September 20 and October 18). ’m a city person. When I looked out the window all I could see was greenery and water,” scoffs Anne Holland, as she recounts first moving to Portsmouth, Rhode Island from DC. “The first day I looked out the window of my new house in Providence, I burst into tears of relief because I could see people walking on the sidewalk right outside.” If Holland’s name is familiar it’s because she is co-founder of What Cheer Writers Club, the skyrocketing nonprofit that offers professional support and coworking space for journalists, creative writers, illustrators, and podcasters. Once she and cats Sunny and Freddie moved into

the center-hall Colonial built in 1927 by Zelig Fink, Holland began planning renovations which would include turning the dining room into a library for her massive book collection. However, not long after, a terrible house fire caused by old electrical wires in the attic resulted in severe property damage. Luckily, Holland was working from home that day and was able to save the cats and call the fire department. Also luckily, all the house’s original windows were at Heritage Restoration being restored (she was making do with storm windows only) and her books, along with some art, were in storage. “Pretty much everything else was lost,” says Holland.

The rebuild took nearly a year and once complete, Holland was concerned that the interior would look too new and slick. “I wanted it to feel as though I’d lived there for years – with warmth, color, and layers of intimate history.” To achieve this look, she deliberately sought things of varying styles and periods, doing much of her shopping at auctions and having pieces like $5 chairs reupholstered nearby at Kreatelier. “When I couldn’t find the right thing, I commissioned it. It can be cheaper than high-end stuff, and you get what you want.” Holland also credits Elizabeth Randall Designs for helping with both the rebuild and decorating. For interior spaces, Holland is drawn to rich colors like mossy greens and periwinkle blues; she likes black leather, orange and raspberry velvets, and cites warm lighting as critical to her aesthetic. “I look for light bulbs with warm light, which means preferably 2,200 kelvins; my fixtures are dimmable or multi-setting, and I’m always tweaking to get the perfect warm glow.” “People are always surprised to learn there was a fire and that so much of the house and its contents are new, new to me at least,” Holland says. “It truly feels like I’ve been here for years. That makes me happy.”

Natural Instincts “When your jobs and hobbies mostly involve being indoors, I think it’s important to have plants and fresh flowers. I always have a bouquet on my desk and houseplants in each room,” says Holland who likes The Floral Reserve and Aquidneck Island’s Rockfarm Gardens (they deliver).

hether learning happens in a classroom, on a picnic blanket, or at the dining room table, not even a pandemic can put a damper on the excitement of shopping for new supplies. In the age of Chromebooks, there’s still nothing quite like procuring blank notebooks and unsharpened pencils to fill one’s mind with possibilities, hope, and fresh starts. Of course, this year there’s a new item on the shopping checklist: masks. Like backpacks and lunch sacks, face coverings are the latest utilitarian item to also display personality and style – and ever-adaptable kids will likely be wearing them in stride. Sure, big box stores have constructed alluring towers of school merch comparable to the holiday season, but we hope you’ll also give some love to local shops and makers, and set your students apart with unique and colorful goods. Here are some best bets for prepping for the academic year ahead.

Decorate with Flowers U se l o c a l bl o o m s to a d d f re s h color to a ny s p a ce By Alex Morse, The Creative Gene
F
rom the kitchen to the bathroom, and every room in between, flowers are one of the easiest ways to brighten up a space and add that pop of color and cheer to your home. Until that first frost, you’re bound to find dahlias, zinnias, snapdragons, and other colorful in-season varieties at your nearby flower farm. Some locations, like Dame Farm and Orchards in Johnston or Four-Town Farms in Seekonk, offer pick-your-own at their flower beds, while others like the Dahlia Shed in Middletown or Young Family Farm in Little Compton have pre-made bunches at the ready.
ST E P 1 : C H O O S E A N D P R E P If creating your own arrangement, either decide on a color theme or go for the wild and foraged look. Cutting a variety of large and small flowers in a mix of light and dark colors will give you plenty of versatility when arranging at home. Be sure to cut stems on an angle, remove lower foliage, and get them into water quickly for hydration.
ST E P 2 : D E S I G N Grab a few vases, jars, or bottles, and have fun playing florist. Create a flower focal point in each arrangement with a “dinner plate” dahlia, sunflower, or bright zinnia. Cut stems close to your container for a “full” look. Fill in with assorted smaller flowers and greenery like the buds on stems, which add great dimension.
ST E P 3 : P L AC E M E N T Place arrangements in unexpected places – on shelves, at the bathroom sink. For an effective display, corral filled vases and jars on a decorative tray, use stacked books to add height, and add dimension with elements like lanterns and candles.

he Bonnet Shores storefront of Faits Maison boasts vegan crêpes and baked goods, but there’s more to the French crêperie than meets the eye. Owners Elise Massenet and Olivia Wilcox are both from France originally, and pull inspiration from their mothers and grandmothers to create healthy plant-based meals available for pick-up at the shop or delivery to Newport, Jamestown, North Kingstown, and Providence. Weekly menus drop every Friday in their e-newsletter, and the duo gets to work cooking and delivering meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Wilcox explains, “It’s a complete dinner with a main dish, a side of green salad from a great local farmer at Chris & Kristina’s Market Garden, homemade French dressing , and a surprise treat for dessert.” Massenet and Wilcox use French flavors to reinvent classic dishes as vegan fare. Their Eggplant Parmesan is stuffed with creamy cashew “cheese,” and the savory Tomato Tart layered with caramelized onions and fresh herbs features a crisp vegan crust. If you’re in the area, stop by for French Madeleines, lemon poppyseed cookies, fruit-topped crêpes, and other delicacies. “Elise and I started Faits Maison to share healthy and nutritious meals with the community,” says Wilcox, “and making crêpes was a dream of mine for a long time!” Narragansett, FaitsMaison.com

M
y husband and I have started taking our nightly after-dinner walks a lot earlier, and we’re now wearing jackets. For those of you who have been waiting for when you can start flaunting your love of pumpkins, plaid flannels, and all things autumn once again, it’s fantastic news. One local adventure I enjoy thoroughly this time of year is visiting farms in the area and sampling all the delish apple-based treats that they roll out. I think it’s one of the nicest ways to spend a weekday or weekend afternoon around these parts.
Patty J is a RI native, and the founder and blogger in chief at the award winning PattyJ.com. Her site spotlights intriguing people, places, and what’s trending in the Ocean State. It’s a savvy, stylish, and sometimes cheeky look at daily life, courtesy of Patty J and contributions from a variety of current (and former) Rhode Islanders.
D a m e Fa r m , J o h n s to n I first discovered Dame because of its close proximity to the original location of Wicked Tulips. The hubs and I paid them a visit back in July to check out the sunflowers and had such a mar velous time. Starting now you can pop over and pick your own apples (aka, PYO) or pick up some cider along with a package or three of their cider donuts. They also have a corn maze that you and yours can explore while there and at press time, the activity was a go. How’s that for some classic fall entertainment ?
J o h n s o n ’ s Ro a d s i d e M a r k e t , Swa n s e a When I first launched my blog , I hired an intern to help out behind the scenes and it was she who first introduced me to this bustling roadside market. Open for 37 years and counting , it continues to be a popular spot for fresh produce and sweets year round. And in the fall, you can be sure to find fresh, tasty apple pies for everyday eating or Thanksgiving.
P e l l o n i Fa r m , A s h away Looking for the in-cider information about a local gem that you might not be aware of yet ? This family-run farm stand in Washington County has baked goods (ice cream and jam, too) that people absolutely adore! It’s another reason, in addition to the leaf peeping possibilities if you time it correctly, to motor over.
P i p p i n A p p l e O rc h a rd , C ra n s t o n Whether you’re looking for a picturesque spot where your significant other can snap an autumnal photo of you among the apple trees (exactly what we did last September) or you want a yummy pie without having to spend hours in the kitchen fussing with peeling and cutting or crust-making (which can be tricky), you’ll want to add Pippin to your next afternoon excursion. Their made-fresh-daily pies – apple and beyond – have locals coming back year after year.
Yo u n g Fa m i l y Fa r m , L i t t l e C o m p t o n An afternoon in Little Compton is always a treat ! I mean, it’s like something straig ht out of a picture postcard (Do people still send those, btw ?). Young Family Farm, located on West Main Road and dating back to 1997, is usually at the tippity top of our itinerar y. People rave about the quality of their PYO apples as well as their homemade pies, g alettes, and signature honey apple crisp. You can also grab a few pumpkins to decorate your doorstep with while you’re at it.

serendipitous stop at Friendly Fruit in New Be dford, where Anna S cott procure d a hug e ba g of pre-pe ele d g ing er for $1, ende d up launching Anna’s Kitchen Shrubs. “ Who wouldn’t buy pre-pe ele d g ing er ? For a dollar ?” S cott asks, adding , “ but then I had to fig ure out what to do with it.” Af ter ma king g ing er a le and g ing er be er (“I nearly blew up my kitchen,” she says, not rea lizing the fermentation process could cause bottle bombs), S cott de cide d to ma ke her first shrub. Before refrig eration, fruit was preser ve d in barrels of vineg ar. The vineg ar with its fruit y essence – the shrub – made a refreshing addition to spirits. Shrubs lost their appea l with the advent of refrig eration but are enjoying a resurg ence from the craf t cockta il movement. Scott was introduced to shrubs at her favorite restaurant in her native St. Aug ustine, Florida , where there was a shrub mimosa on the cocktail list. At first, the combination of champagne, vineg ar, and blueberries made it a no -g o. “But I was feeling kind of spunky, so I tried it and loved it,” she says. “ Then over the next year, shrubs just kept popping up.” When Scott and her family arrived in Barring ton soon after, the former corpo rate exec turned stay-at-home mom spent her days exploring her new ‘hood. That’s how she ended up at Friendly Fruit. That fateful bag of g ing er led to her first flavor : Apple Cider Ging er. It was a big hit.
“ Then I kind of went down the shrub rabbit hole.” It was her husband who encourag ed her to come up with additional flavors. So she dug out her well-worn copy of The Flavor Bible and g ot to work concocting four additional flavors : Cranberr y Mint, Banana Turmeric, Strawberr y Lemon Thyme, and Peach Jalapeño. At fir st h ind ere d by the lack of c otta g e laws in Rho de Island , wh ich a l low sma l l-sca le ma kers to use their home kitchens for c ommercia l fo o d proj e cts, it wa s kismet that fo o d incub ator Hop e & Ma in wa s one m ile down the ro ad . S c ott went throug h th eir in cu b ator pro g ram and use d their c ommercia l kitchen to ma ke one b atch of each of her shr u b flavors . That yielde d ten ca ses of each flavor. She simp ly wante d to brea k e ven : Pay for the incub ator pro g ram, the ing re d ients, and the b ottles . “I ne e de d something to sell so I planne d to sit on the cases and se e how it was re ceive d. And a loca l distributor boug ht it a ll, prett y much imme diately.” Now Anna’s Kitchen Shrubs can be found statewide, at restaurants like Milk Money, Celestial Café, and Mill’s Tavern, and on the grocery shelf at Dave’s Marketplace. Plant City recently added them to their mocktail menu, and Scott just secured her first national account: Her Cranberry Mint shrub will be featured in Delta’s Sky Club Lounges. While she admits that the novelty of shrubs makes it a bit of a hard sell, she points out that “nobody heard of Kombucha” at first, either.

Puppy Love Local TV host releases children’s book exploring life and lessons through a pup’s perspective By Megan Schmit
F
rom page one, playful pooch Tilly will steal your heart as she and her faithful companion Tom adventure across the seashore in colorful illustration and sing-song rhyme. But the darling pup isn’t just a loveable book character – she’s the real-life rescue adopted by Meaghan Mooney, Emmy award-winning T V host at NB C 10 WJAR , Rhode Island native, and author of Tilly Tails: A Day at the Beach. While Mooney originally adopted Tilly – a mini poodle/Pomeranian/Pekingese mix – from a shelter in Colorado, the pup quickly bonded with Mooney’s father Tom here in Rhode Island. “ The concept for the book stems from daily ‘ Tilly Tails’ that Tom would text,” Mooney explains. “[He] would share adventures from their day – which would include photographs – told in Tilly’s voice.” Mooney would share these silly stories with her friend’s two kids, who couldn’t get enough. “It seemed to just make sense to turn this concept into a children’s book!” In June, Mooney’s brand MEAGnetic Media officially published the first installment of Tilly Tails, along with matching merchandise like masks and lanyards, featuring illustrations by California artist Marli Renee. The response so far has been over whelming : Parents across the countr y have submitted notes to Mooney citing Tilly Tails as their kids’ new bedtime favorite. However, the book is not only fun and engaging , but also informative ; A Day at the Beach works in lessons for little ones on water safety, something health and wellness g uru Mooney finds important. “ There’s something special about the reallife Tilly,” Mooney says. “People young and old have been drawn to her, ever since she became a member of our family…To be able to share her with others through this book has been ver y gratif ying !” Learn more and order your copy at TillyTails.com.

The Rhody Drive-In Movie Craze
Spend your nights social distancing with movies a n d con cer ts from you r c a r By Abbie Lahmers

T
he retro summer evening outing of watching a movie from your car is the new social distancing craze all over Rhode Island. Classic spots have reopened this season to carry on the tradition, while other organizations have fashioned drive-ins in their own backyards and lots to make sure movie-lovers can still come together while staying apart. With fall weather creeping in, nothing beats cozying up in a car to watch a campy flick on the big screen.
newportFILM Outdoors continues to bring free drive-in documentary film screenings to Aquidneck Island through October while continuing their virtual streaming program. Films, both drive-ins and virtual, will be released on a rolling basis, so follow along on social media to stay up to date on their events and offerings. NewportFilm.com The Misquamicut Drive-In is a summertime classic, screening favorite films to please the whole family, backdropped by the beach. United Theatre is also teaming up with The Knickerbocker to show concerts on the big screen, transforming the drive-in venue to a live concert setting. Westerly, MBADriveIn.com Rhode Island’s only official drive-in movie theater, the Rustic Tri View Drive-In screens films on summer and fall weekends. Flickers takes over for the week of October 17-25 for their Vortex Film Festival to bring you innovative new flicks in the horror, scifi, and fantasy genres. ith businesses reopening in promising phases, it’s easy to feel like things are going back to normal; however, social distance and masks are still crucial safety measures and a new art program from Rhode Island Latino Arts, a nonprofit that promotes and preserves “the art, history, heritage and cultures of Spanish-speaking people in Rhode Island” is here to remind us. With the help of Latinx artists Tamara Díaz, Rene Gómez, and filmographer Alberto Genao, RILA has created street murals “made up of whimsical designs” around the parameters of Carolina’s Family Restaurant on Ontario and Broad Streets in South Providence. The project is known as El Museo del Barrio, or Sidewalk Museum.

“I have always felt this particular neighborhood of Broad Street – aka La Broá – would benefit from some kind of public art,” says RILA Executive Director Marta Martinez, who has led several community walking tours in the area. “I thought of murals, such as those found in numerous Latino-based neighborhoods in other cities, because I think this sort of public art always brightens a neighborhood and can be a source of pride for the residents.” While the project was funded by the Providence Streets Coalition and the Providence Department of Art, Culture, and Tourism, RILA is coordinating the entire project, which will not only brighten storefronts along Broad Street, but also serve as reminders to social distance since each painting is six feet apart. “People can stand, look down, and enjoy the artwork while they wait in line to go into a restaurant or talk to another person,” says Martinez, adding that both the artists and Broad Street businesses have expressed how proud they are to be a part of the beautification of their own neighborhood.
