After heart surgery, Tia came back stronger. Tia thought her chest pain and shortness of breath were symptoms of too much holiday stress. It turned out Tia was having a heart attack. She was rushed to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital where the cardiovascular team made the diagnosis and performed a life-saving procedure to open a blocked artery. Since Tia lives in Westerly, she received cardiac rehabilitation and follow-up care at Westerly Hospital. Now Tia feels better than ever, enjoying every day with her family. As part of Yale New Haven Health, Westerly Hospital provides expert, coordinated care so heart patients like Tia can come back healthier. See Tia’s comeback story at westerlyhospital.org.

OTHER SIDE OF THE COIN Special quarter honors the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge In 2010, the United States Mint launched its America the Beautiful Quarters program, producing 25-cent pieces featuring five new back designs each year until 2021, each commemorating a national park or site. At the close of 2018, following Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Georgia, Rhode Island made its debut with a freshly minted coin honoring the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge. This isn’t the first time Rhode Island – and the South County region in particular – has made a shiny, silver appearance. In 2001, as part of the 50 State Quarter Program, the US Mint produced the official Rhode Island quarter. It shows a vintage sailboat cruising through Narragansett Bay, shadowed by the Pell Bridge. Now, the newest addition joins the roll, memorializing another local – and national – landmark. The Block Island National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1973, when

the United States Coast Guard transferred 28 acres of the island; the refuge is one of six such locations in the state managed under the Rhode Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex. The commemorative quarter depicts a black-crowned night heron in mid-flight over Cow Cove beach, the North Lighthouse visible in the background. It pays homage to the now 133 wild acres of land that act as a crucial stopping point for birds migrating along the Atlantic coast. The refuge is famous for bird watching – thanks to over 70 species of songbirds making their yearly visit – and barrier beaches. During the ceremony to launch the coin in November, Mint Director David Ryder expressed that the quarter is not only a tribute to the refuge’s critical use as a safe haven for migratory creatures, but “a testament to what dedicated humans can do to protect our world.” To learn more about the coin’s designers and background, visit USMint.gov -Megan Schmit

STRIDE Adaptive Sports has helped kids and adults with disabilities enjoy winter sports across New England, and finally comes to Yawgoo Valley

Making Strides Thanks to the STRIDE Adaptive Sports program teaming up with Yawgoo Valley in Exeter, more people with disabilities can learn to ski independently at Rhode Island’s only ski area. According to Mary Ellen Whitney, STRIDE’s founder and CEO in West Sand Lake, New York, adaptive skiing uses specialized equipment and training to allow people with disabilities to experience the benefits of skiing. “Skiing and snowboarding provide a sense of freedom that is difficult to duplicate in other sports,” Whitney notes. “Skiing is a fantastic sport for people with physical disabilities or visual impairments in that it helps to develop balance, fitness, confidence, motivation, and social skills. Simply put – skiing is skiing!” Yawgoo Valley previously provided private one-hour lessons for skiers with special

14

needs, but the program was limited. The arrival in Rhode Island of two STRIDE-qualified instructors – Scott Frankel and Christina Skeels – will let Yawgoo offer the STRIDE program, which features two-and-one-halfhour lessons on weekends. The program will expand quickly beyond just two instructors, Frankel points out. “We’re fortunate that there are a lot of people from Yawgoo who are PSIA (Professional Ski Instructor Association) certified,” he says. “They know the teaching method and now all we need to do is teach them about the disabilities and the things we use to adapt to people’s disabilities. It won’t take long for us to get the other instructors up and running.” According to STRIDE’s website, the program will run weekends from January to March with morning and afternoon sessions.

Each adaptive lesson costs $85 and includes private instruction, equipment, and a lift ticket. An additional lift ticket for one person accompanying the student costs $50. Pre-registration is required; contact Patti Davis at Yawgoo (401-294-3802) for details and reservations. Frankel has been volunteering with STRIDE for 14 years and he emphasizes it’s not just the new skiers who benefit, especially when young people take to the slopes for the first time. “I can’t convey the passion of the volunteers and the satisfaction they get at the end of each lesson and day,” he shares. “You let this child realize they could do things that their classmates can do. Sometimes you see the tears in the parents’ eyes as they’re watching their kids.” STRIDE.org -Ed McCarthy

It might surprise you that Grant Maloy Smith – musician, teacher, and recognized guitarist and vocalist – never had a single music lesson in his life

It is too trite to call Grant Maloy Smith a renaissance man. He’s more like a round peg that can’t be forced into a square hole. Not one category defines his pie chart of talents. Billboard charting musician, check. Children’s book author, yep. Winner of four

NASA innovation awards, why not? Just played in Carnegie Hall? Of course. Smith, a South Kingstown resident, says he’s just having fun. Today, he is an American Roots recording artist, but his tale has many twists along the

ONE VISIT

way. As a child in the Florida panhandle, his mother and grandmother would play bluegrass, folk, and country music while he tinkered with gadgets. “I didn’t like it,” chuckles Smith. “I wanted to listen to the Beatles.” Naturally talented in art and able to play piano by ear, he was always told he would grow up to be an artist. The family ended up in Rhode Island when his father, a navy pilot, transferred to Quonset. After high school, it was on to RISD to study art. At about the same time, he picked up his first guitar and taught himself how to play. “Halfway through college I realized I didn’t want to be an artist,” he said. “I wanted to be a musician.” So, he dropped college, formed a rock band, and performed around New England. But a day job was still needed, so he worked for a company that made scientific measuring instruments. Many hats later, he ended up owning a company in that field while keeping the music going. Eventually, Smith began to appreciate the music of his childhood and left rock behind. Concentrating on American Roots (a mix of country, bluegrass, folk, and pop) the singer/songwriter has since sold his business to devote all his time to music. His latest album, Dust Bowl – American Stories, tells stories of desperation and resilience during the Great Depression. With a plaintive ache in his vocals, history comes alive in this critically-acclaimed recording. His children’s book, based on his single “Fly Possum Fly” (Hint: think reindeer) was so well received his publisher wants another. His latest single, “Man of Steel”, inspired by meeting a wounded soldier, has just been made the theme song of the National Veterans Association. And the man who never had a music lesson in his life now teaches others guitar and vocals. So, in the end, the circle led him back to his roots. For more information on his music or lessons, visit Grant-Maloy-Smith.com or call 401-524-5681 -Marylou Butler

Sandwich Party Sundays not only help the community it serves, but bonds the community that participates

A Slice of Kindness Packing compassion between two slices of bread, Scott James, founder of Sandwich Party Sunday (SPS), is helping the local homeless population by providing handmade sandwiches on the last Sunday of every month. A Rhode Island native-turned-Los Angeles resident James alongside friend Ashley were overwhelmed by the hungry homeless population in their new neighborhood back in April 2012 and decided to make sandwiches to support them. James says that “the feeling I got from that experience changed me,” adding, “from time to time we would [make and distribute sandwiches], but it was a struggle to make it sustainable.” SPS officially launched in January 2018 when James took leftover funds from a

18

SORhodeIsland.com • January 2019

men’s bowling night to the grocery store. With $125.00 in his pocket, he bought the necessary supplies to feed his neighborhood. It was from there that he began seeking volunteers on Facebook. Thanks to friend Matt, SPS was quickly brought to the Ocean State and alongside James’ brother Justin and friend Pat, they spearheaded the first sandwich party in Rhode Island. Primarily a source of PB&J sandwiches (with a few alternatives for those with nut allergies), the SPS crew and their volunteers make over 1,500 sandwiches between three locations in Rhode Island and Los Angeles. Then, they distribute them “anywhere we think we’ll find people who are hungry,” explains James. “We find people where they are rather than ask them to come to us.”

Food donations come from local businesses like Arcadia Pizza in West Greenwich and Backyard Food Co. in Warwick, and sandwiches are made at Cellucci’s Martial Arts & Fitness Kickboxing in West Warwick. As for the local response, James states, “the reaction has been great. It’s been nothing but positive. I think having good energy and intention goes a long way.” As for expansion, SPS is extending its helping hands to Atlanta, Georgia, and Tampa, Florida, in the coming weeks. They’re also looking for more volunteers and encourage those interested to send in their volunteer applications via their website. James and the rest of the SPS crew make it clear that they’re not giving handouts – they are “the community taking care of itself.” SandwichPartySunday.com -Caroline Boyle

Yes, the premise of Hell’s Belle is kind of funny: Nina Martinez is a motorcycle-riding vampiress who slays monsters for the government. The writing is hard-boiled. The plots are comic bookish. And the setting is Providence. If you’re not smiling yet, you’re probably undead. But not long ago, Karen Greco received

a note. For a self-published trilogy, Hell’s Belle gets a good deal of fan mail. A mother in Massachusetts had been caring for her son, who had a serious illness and needed to be hospitalized. The mother had routinely read the series aloud by his bedside. The stories meant so much to their family; both mother and father would

spend their date nights visiting locations in Providence that had been referenced in the book. “Everything [authors] do is by ourselves,” says Greco, who writes regularly for SO Rhode Island. “There’s no instant feedback. You put in 2,000 words, and then you’re like, ‘Well that was all crap.’ And then you get this email.” Greco never expected to write urban fantasy, and even her latest effort, a prequel called Sin City Salvation, has surpassed her expectations. Greco grew up in Cranston and won a major playwriting competition at the age of 17; the play was performed at the Kennedy Center. Bolstered, she went to NYU to study dramatic writing. But she stalled in New York. “The critics had a lot of control over the careers of the playwrights. I got gun-shy. I thought, ‘I don’t need to write plays. I think I’m just gonna shelve that.’” After 20 years as a freelance writer and publicist in the Big Apple, Greco moved to Narragansett with her husband and daughter. She still makes a living through copywriting and journalism, but in 2014 she gravitated back toward creative writing. And slowly but surely, Nina Martinez was born. “I always loved the idea of writing a novel, but I never thought I could stick to it,” says Greco. “I always loved urban fantasy and horror. I think it’s growing up in New England, we have a rich supernatural history – witch burnings, old houses.” Greco doesn’t mind her self-published approach, nor does her following – which is why three books became four. “It wrapped up nicely in the third novel, where I really could have stopped,” says Greco. “But there was a push from readers. And it turned out to be great, because I figured out how to wrap up these other ideas that I had into this world, and branch out with some other stories I wanted to write.” KarenGrecoAuthor.com -Robert Isenberg

Dante’s Kitchen Cajun Restaurant

We are pleased to introduce Rhody Gem, a new monthly column in SO Rhode Island. We’re always being thanked for spotlighting the “hidden gems” of the state, and in our ongoing efforts to leave no stone unturned, we’re putting the call out to our readership! Each month we’ll spotlight a Rhody Gem: a business, artisan, or place lead to us by our faithful readers. What it is: A restaurant specializing in American food with Southern flair.

Photography by Grace Lentini

Where to find it: Look for the green house with the purple door along downtown East Greenwich’s Main Street. What makes it a Rhody Gem? If you like Cajun style food, this is the place for you. Named for owner Lisa Altieri’s dog, Dante’s Kitchen serves up “grub” with New Orleans panache. Menu offerings include gumbo, jambalaya, and beignets, and the signature macaroni and cheese dish is topped with bacon, cheddar, pulled pork, and jalapeño cornbread crumble. The breakfast menu is extremely popular with locals, as is the roster of specialty drinks. Altieri and her compassion for all are at the heart of this special place, where most of the staff has been with her since day one, lending to the welcoming vibe.

Big Shredding

SOUTH COUNT Y S NOW BO ARD STARS, THE YAW G O O N S , MAKE THE MOS T O UT O F RI ’ S M O DEST SLO PE S

BY BOB CURLEY P H O TO S B Y A N D R E W FI S H E R

YOU MAKE THE MOST OF WHAT YOU’VE GOT

In

the annals of winter sports lore there have been some decidedly odd ducks scattered among the Nordic gods of the slopes: the nervous catapultings of British ski jumper/human cannonball Eddie the Eagle, the iceless Jamaican bobsled team, and even the slow-motion halfpipe meanderings of Hungarian freestyle skier Elizabeth Swaney at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyong-Chang come to mind. And then there’s Rhode Island’s own Yawgoons, the unlikely group of Rhode Island snowboarding superstars, who honed their skills at Exeter’s Yawgoo Valley ski area – all 310 vertical feet of it. What sets the Yawgoons apart from some of these other powder hounds is ability. Despite the funny name, the Yawgoons are no joke. In fact, they’ve won international acclaim for their innovative tricks and techniques – captured and shared on video, of course – that incorporate every possible feature on Yawgoo’s modest set of ski runs. Big mountain shredders, you can keep your halfpipes and funboxes: for the Yawgoons, the

excitement comes from playing on the ski area’s buildings, idle snowcats, ice blocks, rocks, and even grass (there’s usually plenty of that at a resort that gets an average of less than three feet of natural snow each winter). Rather than focusing on big air, the troupe is known for their slope-carving skills and quirky approach to constructing terrain park features, like a rail made from a boat anchor chain. (They may or may not have also done some tricks off snowmaking equipment and jumped out of an occasional chairlift in their day.) Like many a Rhode Islander, the “‘Goons” – Gouin, Dylan Gamache, Marcus Rand, Mary Rand, and Brian Skorupski – all learned to snowboard at Yawgoo. Gouin credits the ski area’s owners – Max and Patty DeWardener and Tracy and Clay Hartman – for giving the group the latitude to hone their unorthodox brand of boarding. “They’re the reason we even exist,” says Gouin, who serves as the Yawgoons’ videographer when he’s not peering into mouths at work as a dentist in Charlestown. “They let us do things that would never be allowed at another ski area.” The Exeter ski hill is small but mighty, says

Gouin. “Yawgoo is probably the best feeder mountain in the country,” he says. “People don’t realize how easy it is to get to, how easy it is to learn there and to practice things like riding the chairlift. It’s got great snow conditions and grooming, and you can go somewhere that’s five minutes away and do things that some people drive two hours for.” Yawgoo Valley is the perfect match for the Yawgoons, who see themselves as ambassadors for the Rhode Island ski community as well as the accessible aspects of snowboarding, which sometimes get lost in the technical aspects of a sport where big air and ever-increasing rotations get most of the attention. “To me, they’ve pushed snowboarding in a very important direction, showing again that you do not need the biggest mountain, park, or even film budget in order to stand out,” said Swiss Olympic snowboarder Christian Haller. “We don’t take it too seriously,” says Gouin. “We know it’s snowboarding – we’re not changing the world. We just want to get people to come out and have fun.” As it turns out, Yawgoo Valley is more than

big enough for some old-school creativity on the slopes: in fact, the Yawgoons often just play off the rope-tow served bunny hill instead of taking the chairlift to the stunted summit. Gouin says that even if your local ski area won’t let you build your own obstacles, there are ample opportunities to mimic ‘Goon tricks using natural features like fallen logs and the snow “whales” that pile up near the base of snowmaking guns. “It’s a different aspect of snowboarding entirely,” says Gouin, “We’re not jumping out of helicopters into the backcountry. We represent a style of snowboarding that’s more attainable for people. We’re riding at this dinky hill, but look at what you can do with this.” Each snowboarder has their own unique skill set. For example, Gamache, who was featured on the cover of Snowboarder magazine, is an artist at carving turns – “kind of a lost art in snowboarding,” says Gouin – and Mary has moved on to a successful career as a professional snowboarder. The core members mostly remain after nearly a decade of Yawgooning, and still carve the slopes at Yawgoo and share their exploits on sponsored trips as far away as Austria and Switzerland. The passion remains despite the ‘Goons transition into serious adulthood with “real” jobs, houses, and families: Marcus, for example, works as a stonemason; Skorupski is a lifeguard, and Gamache is a landscaper and aspiring firefighter.

Nobody is getting rich being a ‘Goon, but the group has earned some cash and gear with sponsorships from Capita snowboards, the Rhode Island-based Civil clothing shop, and the Vans shoe company. Sales of Yawgoons-branded gear help pay for lift tickets, and the group has been invited on sponsored trips abroad. Rhode Island is a “big fish in a small pond” kind of place, and the Yawgoons draw a crowd when they’re hitting their home slope. “We’re definitely well-known at Yawgoo,” said Gouin. “We hang out and ride with and are among all the young riders.” Even in Austria, the Yawgoons earned some shoutouts. “That really happens all over within the snowboarding community,” Gouin say The Yawgoons plan to release their twentieth video in early 2019, when Gouin and company will celebrate 10 years of redefining what constitutes fun in the world of snowboarding. Rhode Island and Yawgoo Valley may be a strange place to find snowboarding pioneers, but the Yawgoons say there’s nowhere else they’d rather be on a winter night than riding the Yawgoo tow rope and coming up with new ways to cut, carve, hit, and grind the state’s modest slopes. “You make the most of what you’ve got,” says Gouin.

25+ Ways to

love the coldest season in South County

By Elyse Major

Photography by Maaike Bernstrom

ith the flip of the calendar page, there’s no denying that winter is here. Whether you’re Team Winter or not, we’ve talked to some locals and assembled a list that will have you embracing the season or at least grinning while you bear it from the first snowfall to the last. Come on, doesn’t the first glimpse of swirling flurries cause your heart to stir just a little bit? Remember the days of being a kid and the excitement of a potential day off from school (Operation: Snowball, anyone?). Sure, as adults, dealing with the logistics of a snowy day can be a drag, so be prepared as best as you can and you’ll be able to roll with the squalls a bit better.

Skip the national chains and enjoy visiting a local seller of supplies. While you’re there, sign up for a class and learn a new skill. 1. Eneri Knits Exeter

2. Love 2 Knit East Greenwich

3. North Light Fibers Block Island

4. The Mermaid’s Purl North Kingstown

5. Two Dots Wakefield

Photography by Maaike Bernstrom Get outdoors and enjoy the snow all around South County this season

STOCK UP In addition to milk, bread, and eggs, why not add hot chocolate mix and cookie dough to your list? Or opt for healthier but still hygge and simmer apple cider or roast root vegetables. The soothing sweet aroma and flavors may warm your heart to the forecast. TIP: Stock up on non-perishable canned goods like soup and nut butters, bottles of water, and, of course, batteries. Aim to keep devices fully charged. STAY TUNED Back up that robocall by signing up for text alerts from the Rhode Island Broadcasters Association. This service now includes parking ban information. RIBroadcasters.com SIGN UP If you take medication or use a medical treatment on a regular basis, be sure you have what you need to care for yourself for at least three days. If you use life support systems such as oxygen, respirator, ventilator, dialysis, pacemaker, or are insulin dependent, be sure to enroll in the Rhode Island Special Needs Registry. This notification allows first responders additional time to consider how to best respond to that incident. Learn more at Health.RI.gov PLAN AHEAD Most people over forty years old shouldn’t be shoveling at all, especially when snow is heavy on those above-freezing days. Before the white stuff comes down, do your best to line up someone to shovel for you, whether it’s a group of teens, a landscaper, or that neighbor with a plow (who might be willing to help in exchange for fresh baked cookies). TIP: Keep cash on-hand to pay for shoveling services.

For many, winters around Rhode Island just won’t be the same without a visit to the local retail chain for a snow shovel and other storm-ready supplies. Start new traditions by visiting this batch of hardware stores. 1. Compass Hardware, Charlestown 2. Jamestown True Value 3. Jerry’s Paint and Hardware, Narragansett 4. Whether you have a toboggan, sled, saucer, or flattened cardboard box, a fresh snowfall beckons kids of all ages to head for the hills. Most sledding spots are not official places but commandeered golf courses and hills off the beaten path. While it may seem awkward, wear a helmet to protect your head, and bundle up before scouting the following locations: EXETER Yawgoo Valley SAUNDERSTOWN Rome Point for cross-country skiing WEST GREENWICH “Big River Desert” aka the sand hills at 135 Gansett Road WICKFORD Elementary school Find safety tips online at the National Safety Council website at NSC.org.

BETTER THAN AMAZON With a valid Ocean State Library card, you can borrow books, e-books, and even stream movies from member libraries. Search the statewide catalog to request books and more and they’ll be delivered to your local branch. Most libraries also have a stash of free and discounted passes to venues like museums that you sign out and return as you would a book. Libraries also host various classes, events, and meet-ups for all ages with topics ranging from cooking to coloring. Visit OSLRI.org for full list FARMERS MARKETS Wintertime farmers markets are gaining popularity. Set your alarm for Saturday morning and head to the Coastal Growers Winter Farmers Market in Narragansett at the Quest Montessori School, and the South Kingstown Winter Farmers Market in Peacedale. THE BRIGHT SIDE The coldest nights make for the clearest night skies! Mark your calendar for Thursday, January 3, when the Quadrantid Meteor Shower takes place. Bundle up and head outside (or over to Frosty Drew Observatory in Charlestown) for this meteor shower often described as the best and brightest! You can enjoy this occurrence and even wish on a star for an early spring!

Caroline Chang, MD East Greenwich Dermatologist I love mixing high- and low-end items together to create a cohesive, timeless look, such as pairing nude pumps with a dress in a subtle allover print and a vintage Chanel purse. I keep my accessories neutral and let my clothing do the talking. I love mixing prints, textures, and colors to create a unique blend. As a business owner and mom of two, I’m constantly on my feet. On days off, I wear classic modern pieces that look polished, but also allow me to keep up with my two children and their busy schedules. I’m a jean addict and love how the perfect pair can accentuate and flatter your figure. To top it off, I’ll either wear a silk blouse or light cropped sweater and pair of boots. When I’m not in scrubs at the office, I’m usually in a sheath dress and heels. I also love dresses with flared skirts because it creates the illusion of curves. I’m a shoe lover so I always start with a pair of shoes and move up from there. Wearing a sharp pair of heels makes me feel confident, which is important as a doctor and business owner. I love brands like Christian Louboutin, Chanel, and LK Bennett for comfortable pumps. My final accessories are always: perfectly painted nails, a simple necklace, stud earrings, and, of course, glowing skin. I love supporting local businesses with unique items that you can’t find elsewhere. I always find great gifts at Sweet Twist, Providence Diamond for its curated selection of local jewelry designers, and A Fitting Experience for intimates. After years of working in a busy office where patients are just a number, I wanted to bring medicine back to they way it should be — with the focus on the patient. My new office has a discrete entrance and exit so patients have privacy, and has a warm, welcoming environment to feel at ease, comfortable, and confident.

Method to the Madness Maybe it’s the psychology major in him talking, but Method Fitness owner Amahl Harik says that hiring trainers who can understand and empathize with the gym’s clients is far more important than recruiting fitness experts for their technical skills. Harik, who leveraged his 20 years of personal training experience into opening two Method Fitness gyms — first in Providence, and about a year ago adding a second location in East Greenwich — says he set out to create “a different environment from the typical gym — more cultured and sophisticated.” After working for years in Boston, Harik opened his first Rhode Island gym on Westminster Street in Providence, across the street from Classical High School. At the time, the revival of the West Side neighborhood was still in its infancy, and the gym didn’t quite click with the local vibe. A move to Wayland Square was more successful, promoting Harik to relocate to

a bigger space in Richmond Square about four years ago. Both gyms have a decidedly different feel than a Planet Fitness or World Gym. In place of bold colors and acres of fitness equipment are rich architectural details and ample space for customized workouts. Located in a former mill building, the soonto-be-expanded, 2,400-square-foot Richmond Square gym has a huge former kiln in the middle, now ringed by the reception desk, with the interior converted into changing rooms. Guests at the rustic, high-ceilinged East Greenwich gym are greeted at a desk built from a slab of walnut, built by Harik himself. In place of pictures of jacked, attractive 20-somethings are lithographs taken from Grays Anatomy (the book, not the TV show). People don’t necessarily come to a gym for the decor, but the warm colors and woody interiors are welcoming to “people who want to

Method Fitness’ brings a new fitness philosophy to East Greenwich

get fit, but don’t want to be in a gym environment,” says Harik. At Method, most sessions are one-onone, with personal trainers who are matched with clients after a detailed intake session, where information is gathered on fitness level, goals, and workout and injury history. The emphasis on personalization requires well-rounded professionals, says Harik. “We look for trainers who are technically proficient but also smart, intuitive, and able to talk to adults,” he says. “We are less technicians than support people. You have to understand that this is a people business. I have clients who have been with me since the beginning, and the relationships we build with people is the most gratifying part of the job, along with seeing the changes we can make in people’s lives.” Trainers and clients have access to typical gym equipment like free weights, benches, and exercise balls, but “the equipment is really the most incidental part of the equation,” says Harik. “A good trainer can give you a good workout using just a towel.” “Our focus is on fundamental exercise that is fun and dynamic and interesting and fresh,” he says. Trainers create dynamic workouts that evolve over time, so the body is constantly challenged. A typical session is a mix of strength and conditioning, incorporating techniques drawn from everything from yoga and pilates to Olympic powerlifting. “We don’t believe in chasing all the latest trends,” Harik says. Working out at Method Fitness isn’t cheap: a half-hour workout with a trainer is $45, and an hour costs $80 (there’s a 10 percent discount when buying a 10-pack of sessions). Harik suggests that clients work out two to three times per week to get good results, but that can include running or working out on your own, not just at the gym. “However you want to approach it, we will support that,” he says. “The ultimate value proposition for us is that our clients leave feeling good.”

review | foodie journal | in the kitchen | restaurant guide Grab George’s of Galilee’s chowder for 71 cents through January

CHOWDER ANNIVERSARY George’s of Galilee celebrates 71 years with a special deal George’s of Galilee overlooks the Salt Pond Harbor, and if you sit on a second-floor stool, you can spend all day watching the fishing boats float past. The vista is pure New England: a flat beach, a rocky shore,

month of January. The chowder is usually served in the “clear” Rhode Island style, but you can ask for a creamier version as well. While you’re there, you might grab one of George’s famous Clam Cakes or a Seafood

and a row of Cape-style houses. Two hundred feet from George’s back door, the Atlantic sprawls. For 71 years, George’s has stood in the heart of Galilee, serving both sailors and tourists waiting to board the Block Island Ferry. George’s has survived hurricanes and hard times, and to celebrate its resilience, the restaurant is serving cups of chowder for 71 cents, all through the

Pot Pie. George’s has come a long way over the past seven decades. The establishment started as “George’s Lunch,” purchased by Norman and Edna Durfee in the 1930s. The counter only seated six people at a time, most of them fishermen and dock workers. Nowadays, the restaurant can serve five hundred. Galilee, GeorgesOfGalilee.com –Robert Isenberg

Steak It Out

Jo Jo’s

Good restaurants know that in order to stand out, they need to start with high quality ingredients. The “farm to table” movement brought this theory to the forefront, but that’s what good restaurants had been doing all along. For the most part, people have come to expect this in higher-end restaurants, but don’t look for it in more casual spots. The exception: Tilly’s Cheesesteaks in West Kingston. Management wanted to bring Rhode Island quick service and a casual spot that highlighted local ingredients, and they have succeeded. Tilly’s is located on Kingston Road, close to the train station and URI campus. The space is warm and inviting, due in part to its friendly staff. There are wooden booths on one side and a bar that looks out over the street. On a nice day, outdoor seating is also available at picnic tables in front. When dining in, you order your meal from the cashier located close to the entrance, but instead of a pager, you are given a playing card. When your food is ready, they call your card: “King of Hearts, your food is ready!” The restaurant does not have a liquor license, but they do serve some thick, awesome milkshakes. Their

decadent flavors often come topped with an Allie’s Donut, and they also have cold brew New Harvest Roaster iced coffee. The last time I was at Tilly’s, I picked up a to-go order and brought it with me to Whaler’s Brewing, a quick ten minute drive away. In addition to great cheesesteaks, Tilly’s also has some good side dishes. I usually start with an order of their excellent Deviled Eggs. The eggs are filled with a creamy mixture of egg yolk, scallion, and hot sauce, and topped with crispy fried onion strings. Try to eat just one; it’s impossible. I have also started with a bowl of their Spicy Pickles, because I’m a sucker for good pickles. These are definitely not for the faint of heart; there is a nice mix of pickled cucumbers, radish, carrots, and banana peppers. For your first visit to Tilly’s, you should start out with the Tilly’s Philly (half or whole). Tilly’s brings in fresh bread every day, so the rolls are perfect – crispy on the outside, soft and chewy on the inside. The meat is hand-shaved Angus beef. The cheese sauce is house-made from Cabot cheddar cheese. This homemade cheese sauce is like the traditional Philadelphian Cheese

Tilly’s Philly

Whiz, only better (not a surprise if you know what’s actually in Cheese Whiz). The only other addition to the sandwich is caramelized onions. You can upgrade your sandwich with fry bread instead of a roll, which is equivalent to eating your cheesesteak on a doughboy. The other sandwich I love is the PB&J. This is not your mother’s version, and there is neither peanut butter nor jelly. First of all, “PB” stands for pork belly and “J” for jalapeño. The pork belly is tender, flavorful, and not at all chewy. It is topped with jalapeño queso, pickled onions, jalapeño mustard, lettuce, tomato, and cilantro. Sandwiches are served with a side of housemade tortilla chips, or you can upgrade to fries for an additional $1.50. If you’re getting your meal delivered or taking it to go, I recommend sticking with the chips. They’re excellent and good for scooping up the cheese sauce that most likely oozed off your sandwich. The shoestring fries are good, but they have to be eaten immediately. On Mondays, Tilly’s offers a special of Prime Rib sandwiches, and on Tuesdays,

Spice It Up Bombay Flame brings Indian cuisine to Wakefield There are few things more spectacular than a weekend Indian buffet. Those creamy, flavorful, often-spicy chafing dishes are the stuff that dreams are made of. So when a new Indian restaurant opens in South County, it’s as exciting as when the waiter asks if you would like a second basket of naan. Meet Wakefield’s Bombay Flame, co-owned by a triumvirate of culinary masterminds: Muthaiah Subbaiah, Farhan Hussain, and Manoj Raveendrainnair. “I’ve always wanted to open up a restaurant in Rhode Island,” says Raveendrainnair. The restaurateur was born in India and earned a management degree there before he came to the Massachusetts Berkshires to work at Mint Indian Lakeside Dining. He eventually bought Mint himself, and that restaurant’s success led to his new venture in Rhode Island. Once he saw the property in Wakefield – the old home of Chen’s Restaurant, which closed its Wakefield location in August – the site seemed ideal, partly because of the lack of Indian cuisine in the area. Bombay Flame, which had its grand opening

on October 22, serves up a combination of South Indian and North Indian dishes and offers a range of vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free options. Among Bombay Flame’s signatures are the Garlic Chicken (crispy chicken sizzling in a garlicky sweet chili sauce), Shahi Murg Adraki (chicken, ginger, and mushrooms cloaked in a cashew cream sauce), and Lasooni Gobi (cauliflower florets simmering in a garlic chili). Other specialties include Bhamia Koota, “a Calcutta Jewish specialty” of lamb, okra, and tamarind tomato sauce, and Bagari Jhinga, shrimp in a creamy tomato sauce, with onions and curry leaves. You can sample some of Bombay Flame’s favorites at its daily buffet, and every Monday night you can try one of the “Chef’s Special” buffets, which showcases a smorgasbord of South Indian cuisine, along with an Indo-Chinese night. Wakefield may have lost a beloved Chinese restaurant with Chen’s, but they have gained an opportunity to try Indian and Chinese fusion at Bombay Flame. Wakefield, BombayWakefield.com –Isabella DeLeo

Anchor Pete’s serves diner fare on Kingstown Road Who is Anchor Pete? A new billboard in Wakefield depicts a bearded man in a brimmed cap – with his long hair and affable grin, Pete would look at home at a Jimmy Buffett concert. This is actually a picture of the owner, Panagiotis Trikoulis, the past proprietor of Athens Diner in Providence. The new venue serves classic American diner food with some Hellenic flair, including gyros and Greek omelettes. Anchor Pete’s has replaced the old sports bar Rhody Joe’s, and the interior is now more nautically themed: The walls are lined with fish, mermaids, and bearded mariners. Anchor Pete’s had its soft opening around Thanksgiving, and it’ll kick off the New Year with a full menu and fully stocked bar. Wakefield. –Robert Isenberg

Hooked on Seafood The seminal cookbook by a South County author is brought back for a second release

range of dishes, from Clams Casino and Basic Steamed Shellfish to Monkfish Kabobs and Oyster Bread Pudding. Her goals are twofold: to diversify ingredients and to make seafood less intimidating. “Friends would say, ‘My parents never cooked fish at home,’ or, ‘It’s so expensive, and I have to wait for a special occasion,’” says Murphy. “And some of it is a little expensive. But you don’t need a bunch of lobster to turn out an interesting dish. I wanted to show people you could do fun stuff with seafood, like put it on a pizza instead of pepperoni.” Murphy acknowledges that seafood is now a hot-button environmental issue, with hard-working fishermen on one side and endangered marine life on the other. The issue is complicated, she says, and she hopes for balance between industry needs and

government regulation. But Murphy also offers some thoughtful advice. “One way to address overfishing is to broaden the variety of seafood that you eat,” she says. “There are lots of fish that land in this country, but they immediately go to Europe or Asia. Mackerel, for instance, is really delicious, and it’s readily available in the Atlantic waters. It’s extremely popular in Europe. They eat it smoked, pickled, in many different ways. I include recipes for mackerel, and if you start asking for it, there will be a demand. There’s lots and lots of variety. My advice is to eat a little bit of everything.”

Martha Watson Murphy knows the ocean. Her father was an officer in the U.S. Navy. She’s lived on both coasts, in the maritime provinces, and in Hawaii. Her husband is a veteran fisherman, and their century-old house overlooks the open sea. As a past professional chef, Murphy loves to cook seafood, which is one reason she wrote The New England Catch: A Seafood Cookbook. If anyone knows the culinary possibilities of fish and mollusks, it’s her. Murphy also knows books. For years, she has worked as an author, ghostwriter, and writing coach. She spent years as manager of marketing and communications for South County Hospital in Wakefield, and she’s also co-written several books, with subjects as diverse as self-help and the lives of surgeons. After running her own B&B, Murphy wrote How to Start and Operate Your Own Bed and Breakfast. That early title was first published in 1994 and is still in print. But The New England Catch is close to her heart. The pictorial cookbook was first released in the late ‘90s as A New England Fish Tale, and it combined recipes, anecdotes, and a history of commercial fishing. Now, Globe Pequot Press has released a handsome new edition, with updated passages and photography. “To me, it’s not a brand new book,” says Murphy. “There are many new recipes in there – between 50 and 75 new recipes. As I look back at the original book, I thought, some of these recipes are a bit time-consuming to make. I also noticed that my friends, who were savvy people, most of them good cooks and adventurous eaters, were not cooking seafood at home. Seafood is fresh and pretty affordable, but they were saying, ‘We just have no idea how to do that.’” Murphy’s encouraging prose extends to every paragraph of the book. Most of Murphy’s recipes are accessible to cooks with basic skills, and the appendices include helpful tips, such as a seafood purchasing guide and step-by-step instructions for filleting fish. Murphy covers an astonishing

South County Scenes Morning on Moonstone

This scene was shot [in December]... saw some great colors in the sky as the sun was setting and this little corner of the dune with the partial fence was calling me for a picture, so I hunkered in and snapped a couple! South County is a photographer’s dream, hidden treasures everywhere all throughout the year... but I’m definitely a fan of the warmer weather! Submitted by Frank Caraccia.
