Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.
Providence Media Inc. has been a publishing staple in Rhode Island since 1975. Our team has changed over the years, but our commitment to bringing the best of the Ocean State to local readers has never faltered. Our company began with East Side Monthly and over the years added Providence Monthly, So Rhode Island, The Bay, and Hey Rhody to our line-up of magazines, eventually combining East Side Monthly with Providence Monthly to create a singular resource for the capital city. Our publications cover Greater Providence, South County, the East Bay, and statewide audiences. Along with a brand new look for our regional publications, 2024 is bringing a new name for our company: Hey Rhody Media Co. All the while we’ve also been building our digital presence, with a twice-weekly free e-newsletter, plus Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, HeyRhody.com, and a newly minted YouTube channel (more on that later), allowing us and our valued advertisers to meet Rhody readers where they are. We thought it was about time that our company name
reflected our years of growth and our statewide coverage. What better way to rebrand than utilizing the name of our popular statewide magazine, Hey Rhody? At Hey Rhody Media Co., we pride ourselves on the incredible employees that have joined us over the years. We have top-notch account executives, an incredible editorial team, the most creative production/art department, and an innovative digital media specialist, all of whom have made this company what it is. Best of all, we’re making this name change ourselves – there’s no corporate buy-out or out-of-state takeover – it’s a celebration of our growth and commitment. Happy New Year! orth Kingstown resident Robert Curley has been writing about Rhode Island for more than 30 years, including penning articles for this magazine, so he’s a bit of an expert on the topic. His favorite lane is the odd and obscure, and he shares some of the interesting stories collected over the years in his latest book, Secret Rhode Island : A Guide to the Weird, Wonderful and Obscure. “As you go along , you gather tidbits,” Curley says. “ They don’t always fit what you’re working on at the time, so you store them away for later.” With Secret Rhode Island, Curley gives readers a smorgasbord of facts and stories that clarif y mysteries and myths, as well as introduce new ones. “ This book is a collection of things people often ask me about. They know part of the stor y, but there’s always more underneath. That twist is what I’m sharing with them. It’s right up my alley.”

Curley has written two other books featuring the Ocean State: 100 Things to Do in Rhode Island Before You Die, and Off the Beaten Path Rhode Island, now in its second printing with another edition possibly coming in the near future. to Do Before You Die in the Caribbean. In conversation, Curley is a treasure trove of fascinating legends and lore. He could start every sentence with the phrase, “Did you know…?” and you’d listen in rapt attention for the big reveal at the end. For instance, the first gas-lit street lamp in the United States was installed on Pelham Street in Newport and there’s a plaque to prove it; and during the 19th century, Little Compton
was the US poultry capital and is honored with a monument in that town. Did you know that sideburns originated with Ambrose Burnside, a Civil War general from Rhode Island? “Much of the book comes from me trying to answer questions for myself,” says Curley. “It’s great that I get to share what I find with others.” Curley will be signing books at the International Museum of WWII, Wakefield on January 10.

The Public’s Radio and Rhode Island PBS Plan to Merge
R
hode Island’s two public media outlets, The Public’s Radio and Rhode Island PBS, plan to merge, creating a single entity with nearly 100 employees and an expanded capacity to produce public-interest reporting , following a vote ( Wednesday) in support of the change by the boards of both organizations. Supporters of the merger said it will significantly expand the reach and scale of pub lic media in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. “Both boards feel we’ll be stronger together,” Elizabeth Delude-Dix, board chair of The Public’s Radio and one of the co -founders of the radio station, said in an inter view. “ To gether, we can be more relevant, more trusted, more dynamic and more responsive to the needs of our community. We can make great work go even farther.” In a statement, Dave Laverty, chair of the Rhode Island PBS Foundation Board, said, “By combining resources and talent, we can

build on our respective traditions of trust and integrity to meet audiences where they are, across platforms, to deliver rich programming that is meaningful, accessible, and inclusive. By working together, we will create an opportunity to bring a more powerful and necessar y public media voice to ser ve our community.” The proposed merger is subject to approval by the Rhode Island Attorney General’s office and the Federal Communications Commission. It comes as nonprofit media organizations are playing a bigger role in some states as the internet has decimated the traditional advertising base for for-profit newspapers. “ What’s ver y exciting about this is that we now have an opportunity to invest in things that are going to make a significant difference in the amount of local nonprofit trusted journalism that’s available here,” said Torey Malatia, president, CEO and general manager of The Public’s Radio. “I have dedicated the last 25 years to Rhode
Island PBS because I am a passionate believer in the value of public television,” said David Piccerelli, president of Rhode Island PBS. “ The media landscape and the demands of our viewers have changed significantly in that time, and yet we continue to deliver award-winning programming. I am ecstatic about this merger because it enhances our ability to do just that: tell powerful stories and make an impact on our community.” No significant broadcast changes are expected in the short term as the merger faces reg ulator y approval. Malatia and Piccerelli will continue in their current roles for now. Once the merger is completed, according to a statement from both organizations, “Rhode Island PBS and The Public’s Radio will launch an inclusive engagement process to co -create a vision for a new combined pub lic media organization focused on ser ving our diverse communities with quality journalism through broadcast and digital organizations.” Malatia said talks about the radio station joining forces with Rhode Island PBS preceded his arrival at the station in 2015 and intensified over the last year. Rhode Island PBS, also known as WSBE, has been broadcasting since 1967. Rhode Island PBS and The Public’s Radio have won a number of awards and distinctions, including Emmys, Telly, and Edward R . Murrow awards and recognition from The Public Media Journalists Association, Scripps Howard, and the National Headliners Award among others. The planned merger marks a big step in the evolution of The Public’s Radio, which was launched as WRNI AM in 1998, after Delude-Dix and three other individuals challenged a status quo in which Rhode Island was one of the only states without its own public radio station. From its early years, when it broadcast on three separate signals targeting different pockets of the state, the station has continued to grow. In 2017, what had become Rhode Island Public Radio acquired its current flagship

signal, 89.3 FM, which reaches most of Rhode and southeastern Massachusetts, and rebranded itself as The Public’s Radio. The station’s news staff has grown in recent years with the addition of bureaus in New Bedford, Newport and South County, the creation of an investigative desk, and a heightened emphasis on in-depth and investigative reporting on topics including child labor in New Bedford’s seafood industr y, the challenge of overcoming addiction for homeless people in Woonsocket, and how private equity is affecting the business of healthcare in Rhode Island. Once the merger is realized, Malatia said, it offers “the opportunity to really amplif y what we are doing , I think exponentially, considering the kind of resources that would be available. By that, I mean extraordinar y producers and great journalists on our side, the opportunity to do multimedia projects. I think it will increase public ser vice from these two nonprofit organizations now becoming one nonprofit organization in ways that ever yone will appreciate.” This article was originally posted on November 9. Style, function, and prescription come naturally to Anthony Rebello, licensed optician and one of three owners of the family-run business (the other two owners are his wife, Kristen Rebello, and daughter Mackenna). The Novel Eye offers on-site prescription and non-prescription lens fabrication for optical and sunglasses, along with eyewear adjustments, repairs and cleanings, and personalized frame and lens recommendations. The shop specializes in “prescription eyewear from smaller, independent eyewear companies who make their own frames in house,” says Rebello, who has 18 years of experience within the eyecare industry prior to opening the storefront in 2022. The shop was recently recognized as one of “America’s Finest Optical Retailers” 2023 by Invision Magazine. Rebello’s lens finishing lab is right on the retail floor. “This is a seldom exposed area of most optometric practices, and very few of them are cutting prescription lenses on site,” Rebello explains. Exposing the lab “shows our customers what goes into making a pair of specs [and] also allows us to get completed eyewear done within a week!”

Kindness in Every Cup From stovetop to cafe, a coffee roaster brews fair trade beans and authentic experiences By Abbie Lahmers
Photo courtesy of La Belle Peche
T
hough the setting may be your kitchen table, the morning ritual of a cup of coffee has the power to transport – or at least, that’s what Kristin Jahne had in mind when devising La Belle Peche. Ethically grown single-origin beans are sourced from small fair trade farms across the globe, and then roasted to perfection right here in Rhode Island. “Some favorites include Papua New Guinea, a rich and chocolatey dream, and Costa Rica, a bright and floral experience,” Jahne shares. Jahne’s own kitchen is where the idea for the coffee business struck. “Years ago, a friend brought over some fresh coffee beans he’d roasted at home. It was unlike anything I ever had before and I was instantly hooked.” Starting on the stovetop with an old pot, she relays that the process was a “smoky mess but produced delicious coffee.” In 2021, she upgraded to a small half-pound electric roaster, testing and perfecting her brews, and by 2022, La Belle Peche was born – and Jahne made the leap to a bigger electric roaster increasing production five times, while still maintaining consistent products. A local following flocks to places like Wildwood Nursery in East Greenwich, Emma Acres in Exeter, Shickasheen Farm in West Kingston, and The Guild in Pawtucket, where La Belle Peche has been known to pop up, but soon Jahne is expanding with her own cafe in Cranston. With plans to open early this year, Café Sospeso brings a zero-waste mission, and will feature a walk-up espresso counter, classic Italian beverages, and baked goods. “All coffee beans will be roasted on site and brewed fresh to allow for a delicious and authentic cafe experience,” says Jahne. Named for the Italian tradition of passing on acts of kindness, Café Sospeso (which translates to suspended coffee), follows a “a pay-it-forward method of buying a cup of coffee for a stranger. Anyone can cash in the free cup – no questions, no judgements, no stigmas,” explains Jahne. “I’m absolutely ecstatic because this has been a dream in the making for over a decade!” Follow @labellepeche_coffee for updates and pop-ups, or visit LaBellePeche.com.

n East Greenwich’s bustling Main Street, there’s a coffee joint that doubles as a nightlife spot – and it’s an espresso martini lover’s dream. MainStreet Coffee boasts an inviting atmosphere and diverse menu of delectable treats by day, and a unique bar concept after dark. When the clock strikes 5pm each evening, the cafe – which opens at 7am – seamlessly transitions into a martini bar that exudes intimacy and charm, creating a perfect setting for post-work bevvies and conversation. Stepping into MainStreet Coffee on a sunny winter afternoon, I found myself immediately drawn to the lively ambiance. The rich aroma of freshly brewed espresso guided me on a sensory journey, orchestrated by Jordan Owensby, the cafe’s experienced and friendly bar manager.

From desserts and coffee to teas and lattes, the menu at MainStreet Coffee is a well of riches. The space itself is a blend of comfort and contemporar y aesthetics, featuring exposed brick walls and plush leather chairs. Whether you choose to cozy up by the fireplace, enjoy people-watching from the bar and cafe area, or linger outside on a warm day, you’ll be treated to ambiance. MainStreet Coffee’s commitment to artistr y is showcased in its masterfully prepared sweets. Collaborating with nearby bakeries for weekend specials and sourcing beans from a roaster in Pawtucket, the cafe champions lo cally made goods. Owensby treated me to a platter of exquisite bites, including a cannoli, fruit tart, Raspberry and Blueberry White Chocolate Cheesecake, and my two favorites: the Caramel Apple Tart and the Vanilla Bean Cheesecake. The former was adorned with crumble topping and a glistening caramel glaze, enveloping my taste buds in a medley of warming flavors. The cheesecake, with its silkiness and density, offered a divine fusion of subtle sweet hints of vanilla and the harmonious richness of cream cheese, leaving me craving more. And then, the pièce de résistance: the cocktails. While the Salted Caramel Espresso Martini remains a personal favorite, Owensby recommended I try the Cold Brew Whiskey Espresso

Martini. I was captivated by its velvety coffee, providing an instant jolt, while the whiskey added warmth and depth. With every sip, the flavors unfolded in a graceful symphony, complete with a delicate frothy crown. The presentation, including a dusting of cinnamon and a trio of coffee beans, was impeccable. For those craving a fruity sip, the Blueberr y Mule is a must-tr y. With a zing of ginger beer and a burst of plump blueberries, it transports the senses to a sun-kissed orchard. Vodka adds a touch of sophistication, and the presentation and aromatic experience elevate the
beverage to another level. From the ambiance to the refined sips, MainStreet Coffee is a must-visit retreat from the bluster y days of winter. Coffee enthusiasts can access online recipes to capture a bit of the experience at home, but trust me, you’ll want to return to Main Street for the real deal – I’m already looking for ward to tr ying their homemade biscotti on my next visit.

She thought about teaching the culinar y arts herself, but she quickly learned that was not her calling. “I have so much respect for teachers,” she relays. Like many people, when the pandemic hit,
King pivoted. Inspired by chef Haley Rego of The Holistic Trick, she stepped into the world of food blogging, and thus Krunchy Kate was born. Fueled by a passion for wholesome comfort foods, nutrition, and wellness (on the fitness end of things, she’s also a Poliquin Certified Personal Trainer), she created an LLC and, in 2022, threw everything into becoming a personal chef. She attended networking and wellness, catered

“
grew up in the days of the food pyramid, where six to 11 ser vings of bread was recommended,” says Katie King , using the old standard to show how far she’s come to become the health-focused Krunchy Kate of The Rhode Show acclaim. These days, her focus has shifted to eating holistically while maintaining delicious flavors and adding unique spins on classic foods, and she has been on quite the culinary journey. As a native Rhode Islander who grew up in North Kingstown, King’s career actually began in a very different field. After five years of studying and earning a degree in architecture, she realized that path did not afford the type of lifestyle she wanted. “I could not sit in a stuff y office for a living ,” she admits. Throughout her youth and into early adulthood, she held various jobs at restaurants, kitchens, and cafes. “Food has always been in my background,” she says. “For a long time, I thought I wanted to open an eclectic coffee shop with homemade syrups and non-dairy options, like The Nook in East Greenwich.” But King’s desire to cook came from creative dates she and her husband – then boyfriend – would take to the grocery store. “It was like our own version of Chopped,” she explains. “ We would get a bunch of ingredients and try to create a meal from them.” At that time, her expertise revolved around chicken: lemon chicken, pineapple chicken – “barbecue chicken and rice was my go-to,” King recalls. Her husband thought it would be wise to expand her repertoire. Rachael Ray was an early source of inspiration, and soon King started experimenting with different flavors, creating healthy meals that her family and friends could feel good about eating. This passion was backed by experience with the RI Community Food Bank’s Community Kitchen, a culinar y job training program preparing adults for careers in the food industr y. The purpose was twofold : not only did King take a deep dive into nutrition, acquiring new skills and earning her Ser vSafe
small parties, joined the Professional Moms of New England group – anything to put herself into local hubs and meet new people. Her big break came when she made her first (of now six) appearances on The Rhode Show. “I feel like it really legitimized my business,” she says. Inquiries poured in and her business exploded. As an in-home personal chef, she never creates the same menu twice. She works one-onone with clients to learn about their specific dietary needs and preferred flavor profiles. “I’m lactose intolerant,” she explains, “and I learned that changing eating habits changes how you live, how you move, how you feel – it changes everything.” This is what she loves to bring into the homes of her clients. For the new year, one small but significant piece of advice she offers for those who are hoping to shed a few pounds is to change the size of their plates. “Instead of using a dinner plate, use a salad plate – and don’t go back for seconds.” This helps with portion control, and filling a smaller plate actually means you’re getting a more appro priate portion for that meal. “I also recommend adding or exchanging ancient grains into your diet instead of traditional grains [like bread]. Quinoa or barley make great roasted veggie bowls.” Novice chefs will appreciate the step -by-step instructions of her easily digestible recipes. She recommends the Roasted Beet Salad, other wise known as the “Show Stopping Salad,” posted on her blog. “It’s a crowd favorite and the most requested dish for any party or get-together.” Although King and her husband no longer embark on grocer y store dates, some things never change. “I still make barbecue chicken, but it’s a lot better now. I make my own barbecue sauce, for one,” King says. “It’s one of his favorites.”

Food News East Providence’s first taste of craft beer A new craft brewery in East Providence is the first of its kind in the city. Crook Point Brewing is named for the illustrious “stuck-up bridge” which is visible from the tasting room. Owner Ernie Watson acquired the building, on the site of a former hammer factory along the Providence River, right before the pandemic and initially wasn’t sure how he would use the space. “Originally, I was thinking maybe a yoga studio or a cross-fit; then I realized a brewer y would be ver y cool here,” says Watson. “I was a home brewer, and thought, hey, I can give it a go.” Head brewer John Windle operates the newly installed ten-barrel brewing system. “We can only do four at a time; that’s our fermentation cycle. We’ve got a lager, an ale, an IPA, and a seltzer,” says Watson, who is working on providing local food options. “We can send out, and work with restaurants right in the neighborhood.” There’s also an event space adjacent to the tap room, available for rental. Don’t be sheepish about North Kingstown’s new watering hole Diners will discover a warm, cozy atmosphere at The Neighborhood Table and Bah, which opened in North Kingstown in October on the site of the former Sonoma Bistro. “The Neighborhood Table is a brightly lit, family-friendly restaurant, with tables that look like they are plucked from neighborhood homes,” says owner Kerrie Lanoie. The menu spans everything from global flavors to homestyle cooking classics, with popular choices including the top-selling pork belly bowl, a variety of tacos, and Detroit-style deep-dish pizzas.

The “Bah,” initially named to poke a little fun at our distinctive Rhode Island accent, took on a life of its own as the concept developed. “ We adopted the sheep theme,” says Lanoie. “So when you walk in, the sign says ‘Have fun, make bah’d decisions,’ and ‘last call’ is ‘pasture’ bedtime.” The Bah offers a more pub -like feel with live entertainment on weekends and a game room with old-school video games, board games, and more. A bar in a record store? “Why not?” says Chris Zingg who runs the Upside Bar with partner David Silva in the former 2nd Story Theatre, sharing space with Zingg’s In Your Ear Records. The neighborhood watering hole off Main Street “is intended to be one cohesive unit with the record store,” says Zingg. “We’re calling it The Upside Bar at In Your Ear.” Upside serves music-themed cocktails and craft beers, “eight on tap, including local brewers Proclamation, Long Live Beerworks, Pivotal Brewing, and Origin Beer Project,” says Zingg. In addition to drinks, nearby Taco Box provides a full menu from Friday through Sunday. “We have this huge commercial kitchen downstairs. During the week, we’ll also have light bites and bar food.” The menu features chicken and shrimp tacos, salads, and bowls. You can also check out local musicians and DJs spinning vinyl most weekends. Zingg plans to turn the upstairs theater into a venue to host touring bands, comedy shows, and even a theater group for neurodivergent adults. Warren, @upside_bar JANUARY 2024 | HeyRhody.com

NAVIGATING SUCCESSION IN A FAMILY BUSINESS Running a business and keeping pace with evolving technologies, consumer preferences, and economic uncertainties can be challenging. When that business is closely held or family owned, complexities rise as emotional and psychological dynamics are introduced along with legacy concerns and a need to ensure succession meets financial and business goals. Having advised our own clients through similar transitions, we have learned common threads throughout including a need to think objectively and plan strategically while considering all personalities and dynamics involved. During this process, we offer objectivity and just the right technical toolbox. As parents become company ambassadors, they often hope to bring their children into leadership roles while facing the reality of gifting their corporate baby to their actual babies. Letting go with peace of mind is no easy feat. So, let’s look at three central questions that often arise. 1. How do you secure retirement and your legacy? Owners of small to midsized businesses often rely on their exit as a primary source of retirement income, making retirement strategies a priority. Fortunately, there are opportunities to design plans and leverage various tools unique to each owner. When parents pass their business to the next generation, it is with the vision that the company will thrive under new ownership. Onboarding, training, and legacy building can take years and only happens with education and adequate preparation. 2. What is fair in the family? Many factors play into a family’s determination of the most equitable path including individual values, spending habits, and roles various family members play in the business. Sibling rivalry can complicate this, raising questions about asset distribution and responsibilities. During this time, everyone will need to be open to discussing their goals, business interests, and concerns—ideally with a skilled facilitator or advisor there to mediate. 3. When do you begin thinking about a transition? Regardless of how difficult it may be, it is never too early to think about an exit strategy. Since an unexpected emergency and a rushed succession only increases friction, early discussions should begin with the end in mind. Proactive planning allows time to lay a clear path, let individuals express themselves and embrace their future roles, and cement retirement expectations. All stages should involve a coordinated support team of CPAs, financial advisors, and legal experts for business and estate planning. Family-owned businesses are a long-term endeavor. When handing operations to a new generation and as parents enter a new life stage, emotional issues arise. With the right team by your side, you can create a sustainable path—one that is operationally sound while considering interpersonal dynamics. If you have questions about business transition, please contact Carmen Grinkis.

To determine how much energy you’re actually using and what to do about it, schedule a no-cost home energy assessment where an energy auditor will complete an attic-to-basement evaluation and provide a custom home energy report outlining recommended energy efficiency improvements. They will even install a few no-cost energy-saving products which may include ENERGY STARcertified LED light bulbs, seven-day programmable thermostats, faucet aerators, or low-flow showerheads. COLLEGE AID PLANNING: NOW Considering college? All college students are required to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to receive financial aid from the federal government to help afford college. Each year, over 13 million students who file the FAFSA get more than $120 billion in grants, work-study, and low-interest loans from the US Department of Education. Many states and colleges also use the FAFSA to determine which students get financial aid, and how much they’ll get. The FAFSA asks for information about a student’s family finances, including tax returns. The form was simplified and redesigned in 2023 to make it easier for students applying for federal student aid.

REAL ESTATE There’s a reason flipping houses is a popular pastime beyond HGTV. Investing in a piece of property is smart for many reasons, the first being that it’s a “real asset,” a physical commodity with value. You can rehabilitate and sell for a quick profit, or rent out for monthly income. When the market is low, you can find bargains, and when it booms, you can earn a fortune.
PRECIOUS METALS When the dollar is weak, the coin reigns supreme – at least, the gold and silver kind. While this investment is not the most reliable, as is the rise and fall of the dollar, it’s worthwhile to have precious metal coins on hand in case of an economic or financial collapse, during which they can be used as barter.

WINE Stockpiling fine wines? That might sound appealing enough on its own, but you can make a pretty penny off buying sought-after vintages and selling to wine connoisseurs. Find the right wines, keep track of when and where you purchased it, store in a temperature-controlled room, and reap the benefits of an investment that literally gets better with age.

SAVE SMARTER SOME SIMPLE SWITCHES THAT CAN HELP REDUCE SPENDING AND GROW SAVINGS: * Many of us have auto-pay subscriptions to a plethora of TV streaming services. Can’t let them go? Pick your favorite, cancel the rest, and rotate based on viewing habits. * Look into cheaper cell phone plans and if you still have a landline (and your only call is about prescriptions that are ready), maybe it’s time to cut the cord. * If you’ve got something to sell, whether it’s a pair of jeans or something you’ve hand-crafted, there is an app ready. Determine if any fees or time (taking photos, packaging, etc.) are worth the effort, and if they are, you could make some extra cash. * Look for lower interest rates which could save you considerable sums over the life of your loan, and when it comes to insurance – look around – there may be better deals than simply auto-renewing coverage.

Ask the Expert:
Employee Rights A law firm with nearly 40 years of experience, Sinapi Law Associates, Ltd. represents employees in employment discrimination, retaliation, medical leave, and wage and hour law. Good financial planning should start with looking into whether or not you are being paid by your employer for all the work you perform. Richard Sinapi, Esq. and Danilo Borgas, Esq. share answers to common questions asked by employees.
How much of my work time is compensable? It depends. For those paid by the hour, any time you are required to be at work is compensable. If your employer requires or allows you to work outside your usual hours and you do so, that is also probably compensable. For on-call time, if you are restricted in your ability to engage in other meaningful daily life activities, then you should be paid for the time. Time spent traveling for your employer during the workday (though typically not commute time) is compensable.
Am I an employee or an independent contractor? If you set your own hours and rates and choose who you work for, you are likely an independent contractor. If you have a boss who sets those things for you, you are likely an employee. It is not your employer’s decision, but rather comes down to who controls the terms and conditions of your employment. Even if you sign an “independent contractor agreement,” it does not mean you are not an employee under the law.
Can my employer pay different workers different rates for the same duties? Sometimes, if based on years of service or performance. However, employers may not pay employees differently based on a suspect clas-
sification, which federal law recognizes as race, national origin, religion, sex, disability, age, and citizenship. RI law adds color, sexual orientation, and gender identity as protected classes. Effective January 1, 2023, Rhode Island’s Pay Equity Law prohibits employers from paying an employee at a wage less than the wage rate paid to employees outside a protected class for performing comparable work.
What else does the new Pay Equity Law mean for employees? Employers must now disclose pay ranges on request. The law also makes it unlawful to prohibit discussions of pay among employees. Employers may not reduce an employee’s wages to comply with the law, nor may they inquire into your wage history in deciding what to pay you.
What are my legal rights if the employer does not comply with employment laws? Probably more than you think. In addition to reimbursing you for lost wages, you can often receive emotional damages, reinstatement, and payment of your attorney’s fees from the employer. Some laws also grant “liquidated damages,” doubling the amount of back wages you receive. If you are discharged or otherwise treated adversely by an employer for complaining about violation of laws pertaining to your work or refusing to engage in a violation of the law during the course of your work, you could be entitled to three times the amount of any damages you sustain.
I’m being scheduled for twohour shifts. Can my boss do that? Yes, but if you are an hourly employee, you are entitled to a minimum of three hours of pay for each shift, regardless of how long you are actually assigned to work, unless you expressly and voluntarily agree to be assigned to shifts of less than three hours.
I work on commission. If I leave my position before my commissions are paid out, do I still receive them? Yes. Once you have done the work to earn the commission, you are entitled to receive it. If you are let go just before completing all the work, you may still be entitled to pay.
Left to right: Joshua Xavier, Esq., Michael da Cruz, Shannah Kurland, Esq., Richard Sinapi, Esq., Chloe Davis, Esq., Lori Beagan, Danilo Borgas, Esq., Gregory Mancini, Esq.
Do I lose my unused paid time off (PTO) if I leave my job? In Rhode Island, you are entitled to be paid out for any unused PTO if you have been employed for at least a year. This only applies when you leave; your employer can still adopt a “use it or lose it” policy.

New Year, New Use
From slow fashion to creative reuse centers, Ocean State organizations are turning trash into treasure By Abbie Lahmers
M
ost of us know the dopamine rush that comes with hitting “order” online, and the fleeting thrill of the unboxing that follows, but in a state that harkens to the ocean in its nickname, a shift toward more sustainable consumerism can be even more appealing than the lure of two-day delivery. With this sentiment in mind, Charlotte von Meister and Danielle Sturm founded Rhode Island’s first slow fashion collective, and late last year, The Nest grew into a bigger space on Carpenter Street in Providence, where racks of secondhand styles are complemented by a second floor dedicated to community outreach. “ We’re an educational space first, where people can learn and meet other people,” says Sturm. Through monthly clothing swaps, knitting and sewing clubs, tailoring and mending appointments, and more, events get clients thinking about The Nest’s mission of “combatting overconsumption and waste in the textile and fashion industr y.” Hailing from the midwest where she grew up thrifting , Sturm sought refuge in searching for cool, unique plus-size clothing she couldn’t find in traditional stores. As her collection grew, she realized, “If I’m having this problem finding plus-size clothing , other people must be too, so I started reselling on Instagram.” For von Meister, shopping at Closet Revival in Newport was her first foray into consignment, before working at fashion startups in New York City. “ The longer I worked within the fashion industr y,” she relays, “I really started to see how toxic it was, from production to end of life of the product, and especially the pushy consumerism.” The pair’s journeys converged over a dinner to discuss splitting a booth at the Providence Flea in 2021 and snowballed into finding their first space on Craigslist, where they let their business model grow organically, g uided by what their clientele were seeking : a thoughtful alternative to fast fashion.

Rather than pushing sales, von Meister explains, “ With all the different offerings we have at The Nest, we’re really tr ying to meet people where they are on their conscious consumerism journey. Not ever yone shops second-hand, but if you’re still buying new, come to our tailoring ser vice or come to a sewing class and learn how to make it yourself.” Although recycling can sometimes be a viable option, Sturm emphasizes that sustainability starts with purchasing. “ The fashion industr y hides behind the oil industr y because the majority of clothes and fast fashion are made of plastic, which is derived from oil,” she explains, pointing to polyester, which melts down and releases chemicals. Sheri Griffin, the operations director of the Creative Reuse Center of RI echoes this sentiment. “Reduce, reuse, and repair are so much better than recycle,” says Griffin. “Keeping items from the landfill not only saves space, it saves energ y and greenhouse emissions.” By taking donations of excess materials and making them available at ver y low prices for educators and makers, the East Providence center inspires creativity when it comes to turning trash into treasure. “We keep the price of experimentation low, so that the environmental and social benefit is high,” says Griffin, explaining that their mission is to forge a deliberately anti-racist, safe, accessible space, dismantling barriers to “liberate creative practice.” The Creative Reuse Center opened in October of 2022, following the closure of South Providence’s Resources For Rhode Island Education, which had been an outlet for recycling and reuse for 30 years. “We were able to take on their leftover inventory, and we are seeking to restart their relationships with contributors and customers,” Griffin explains. From crafting materials like fabric, beads, and drawing pads to a collection of film negatives of moon photography from NASA, the Creative Reuse Center sparks creativity with its stores of goods, operating on a membership model, and asks that donors check online to see what items they’re accepting. Griffin shares that classroom supplies – paper, binders, paints, and brushes – are always in demand, along with crochet hooks and wool. Not sure where to begin? Workshops demonstrate how to sew or crochet, make journals, and craft with unique items. “Many of our customers

love to learn techniques,” says Griffin. “Some are interested in how to use unlikely items, such as cardboard tubes, tin cans, and rope in their studios or classrooms.” Oftentimes, sustainability missions go hand in hand with human rights initiatives. Along with keeping furniture out of landfills, the South County Habitat for Humanity ReStore retail space in Charlestown fuels the nonprofit’s mission of building affordable housing. “ We’re just one of the over 1,000 thrift stores located in the US and Canada that takes in gently used furniture and household goods for resale, which gives us the money to purchase land and materials to build houses,” says manager Jason Brown, sharing that they’ve built 58 houses and ser ved 122 families. “A huge component of our customer base are landlords and DIY-ers working on projects and remodels on a budget,” says Brown. “Donating and shopping second-hand is a great way to perpetuate more sustainable

SUSTAINABLE FASHION Dip your toes in more conscious consumerism with these first steps from the pros at The Nest.
ALL NATURAL “Buy second-hand as much as you can. Thrifting is fun,” says Sturm, but if you can’t find what you’re looking for, shop small first and opt for natural fibers like cotton and wool, which last longer, hold less odor, are easier to mend, and eventually decompose.
SHOP YOUR CLOSET “Outfit repeating is such a stigma, especially on social media,” says von Meister. “Don’t be afraid to wear the same thing twice. Play dress-up in your closet” to rediscover pieces you love and get inspired.

An 1875 Mansard Empire home gets a 21st century makeover By Elyse Major
T
he real estate listing began with “Much admired 1875 Mansard Empire home” – and continued citing coveted features like a large carriage house garage, high ceilings, period moldings, and details including a covered brick veranda, patios, a stunning dining room, and more. Yet, this home in East Greenwich’s Hill and Harbor area sat on the market for some time. Says current homeowner Sherri Tracey of the property in which she happily resides with her husband Doug and their two older kids, “Many people I know looked at it and even considered purchasing it. I think it was over whelming for some because it needed a lot of work and would be a huge project.” JANUARY 2024 | HeyRhody.com

In a wise move, the Traceys’ realtor Jodie Neville suggested they reach out to Paul Vespia from Hill and Harbor Design+Build (HHDB) to get an idea of the amount of work ahead. “After talking to HHDB and getting a budget range as well as some ideas to change the layout of the house, we submitted an offer, still a little unsure about what we were getting ourselves into,” says Doug. The day of the closing , HHDB began demolition work.

Ambitious structural plans included transforming a series of rooms into an open floor plan on the main level, which meant removing “a staircase to nowhere” and knocking down the walls of two bedrooms to create an expansive space where kitchen, pantr y, T V room, and dining rooms all flow. With so much house to decorate and to keep things cohesive, the couple turned to HHDB’s interior designer. Says Sherri, “ With their help I was able to use different colors throughout the house that transition seamlessly from one room to the next. Most of these colors I would’ve never picked myself, but we love ever y single color in ever y room.”

ven though Oprah Winfrey no longer has a daily show on broadcast TV, that doesn’t mean she’s not still a true influencer. Each year the dynamic actor-producerauthor’s thoughtfully sourced gift list (AKA “Oprah’s Favorite Things”) appears on OprahDaily.com and in the Winter issue of O Quarterly magazine, driving millions of dollars in sales and putting smaller brands in the national spotlight. One of the current 48 gifts under 50 dollars is the Yanta set by Roam Load, the Providence-based athleticwear brand founded in 2020 by Toyin Omisore. “Our team is unapologetically dedicated to creating a lifestyle that highlights brown skin. Roam Loud strives to support its Wanderers on their journeys with eye-catching pieces that celebrate a variety of body types. Enjoy our collection at the gym, in nature, or on the go,” says Omisore. Winfrey agrees, stating on OprahDaily.com, “The founder of this fitness-wear company has designed pieces with higher waists and tops that feel a little more substantial – plus a pocket for your phone or keys.” Learn more about Omisore in our Influencer column.

or paper lovers, selecting a new calendar for the year ahead is a pretty big decision. Determining factors can include blank space on each day to jot down notes or add stickers, phases of the moon revealed, the inclusion of holidays and observances, peeks at the month before and ahead, and of course, captivating themes and images to help set the mood for each month. Here are seven calendars with uniquely Rhode Island content – some compiled from winners of photography contests, some used for fundraising – all showcasing special interests and talents.

The intrepid designer’s activewear set is among Oprah’s Favorite Things By Amber Jackson
How do you describe Roam Loud? Roam Loud is a premium feel-good athleisure brand where we encourage you to live and be free and as a brand and community ; we are creating a lifestyle where brown skin is at the front and not an afterthought. How has Rhode Island contributed to your identity as an entrepreneur or the Roam Loud brand? Growing up here, I haven’t always felt seen, and that it had an impact on how I ap proached entrepreneurship, which I believe works in my favor. Invisibility forced me to dream big and beyond the place I lived. I didn’t move with the expectation of support; I just focused on creating a dope brand for a worldwide community that I hadn’t met yet. Roam Loud’s Yanta set is featured in the 2023 list of Oprah’s Favorite Things. Huge accomplishment! What was your initial reaction to the news? Was it a surprise or was there a submission process? I kind of froze in amazement staring at the email. Then I called my sister so we could scream together. The Yanta set did go through a review process but nothing was final, so receiving the congratulations email was an amazing surprise. What are some favorite local restaurants to visit for some self-care time? I don’t have just one when it comes to food but some recent favorites are 4 Seasons and PiANTA Vegan Restaurant in Providence, and D’s Spot in Pawtucket. Learn more at RoamLoud.com; find Amber Jackson at BlackLeaf Tea.com

Meet Toyin Omisore
What inspired you to start Roam Loud, your brand of activewear and athleisure apparel? I was inspired to create the brand around 2018. During this time, I was in the g ym almost ever y day. A friend of mine worked for an activewear company and told me about a sample sale they were having. My activewear truly sucked so I took advantage of the sale. Later that night at the g ym, I had my new set on and I felt amazing. I felt so good, my workout was two hours that night. It was then I knew I wanted to create an activewear brand to recreate that feeling for other peo ple. I also knew if I was going to do this, it had to reflect the women who look like me that value health and wellness.

zen Now and CUT THROUGH THE CHAOS AND FIND YOUR INNER CALM THIS NEW YEAR

G
wyneth Paltrow makes it look so easy – serenity, centering , energ y work, healing , lotions, potions, clean eats, and scandalously scented candles that, well, let’s just say, metaphorically light the way – all suggest the promise of omnipresent inner peace and perpetual balance of mind, body, and spirit. But in a world where the hustle is real, overscheduled is an understatement, the news is a potpourri of heartbreak, global unrest, and rising geopolitical tensions, and your Apple
watch will literally send you a notification reminding you to breathe (read this with the intro to Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” in your head for peak accuracy), it seems harder than ever to find a sense of calm. The good news is, it’s there, perhaps buried underneath the Google calendar or lost in the gridlock of the Route 6/10 Connector, but calmness is attainable, and there are a number of Rhode Island professionals who can help us recalibrate, realign, and reawaken our inner Gwyneth.
“Movement is a beautiful way to find your calm because it gets your mind onto your body and out of your head all the time,” says Laura Nave, a classically trained and certified Pilates instructor with more than a decade of experience in the professional health and fitness fields. Ten years ago, Nave opened Rare Form Pilates, a group fitness studio in Providence’s Jewelr y District. Here, clients of all ages, fitness levels, and experience use Pilates apparatus to do flow-based, core-centered exercises focused on building streng th. “ The workout is built on the principle of centering and control, and breathwork and flow,” explains Nave. “ The intention of the work is to keep your body functioning , well, and free of pain, and that ideolog y never gets old. My eldest client here right now is 90.” Inner calm, explains Nave, is part and parcel to the practice of Pilates. “If you come in and you have to focus on different movement patterns and you give yourself the space to focus on your body for an hour, trust me, you walk out of the room much calmer than you walk in.” Pilates is meeting your body exactly where it is, adds Nave, which means anyone can get started at any time. “Spoiler alert: there is no perfect way to come to the body. You just have to do it,” she says, adding that many people get caught up in the pressures of perfection when it comes to wellness and fitness. Sometimes just a 30-minute walk can reframe your perspective, she says. “Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good,” she advises. “Do what you can, when you can. We live in such a hilariously rigidly structured life that people think if they’re not doing something at 8am on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, ever y single week, 52 weeks a year, that they’re failing. You’re not. It’s just a false premise.” That’s why the Pilates method is typically called a “practice,” much like yoga, as one practices and, ideally, improves.

- ELLEN BLOMGREN MUDSTONE STUDIOS
“Battlecat” reveals that pottery can be more than bowls at the wheel
Photo (top) courtesy of Mudstone Studio, (bottom) by Mike Cevoli
Ellen Blomgren also finds inner calm in her practice, but it’s a practice of a different kind. The professional ceramic sculptor and artist educator founded Mudstone Studios at Cutler Mill in Warren 16 years ago so that she not only had a place to create, but could also teach others how to make breathtaking artistic expressions. Last year, she opened a second studio in Pawtucket at Lorraine Mills. “Any medium takes years to hone. Sculpting just came more naturally to me and I have been evolving over all these years, stretching further with every new project,” says Blomgren. Born out of a desire to support artists across the South Coast and now, around the Capital City and Blackstone Valley, Mudstone Studios serves as a communal workspace for artists and novices working in ceramics. She’s committed to creating an affordable and nurturing environment for all levels, for both adults and mature teens. The craft is one that lets her detach from life’s demands. “Sculpting takes me to a meditative space where I lose all track of time and the busy stuff that makes up the rest of my life,” she says. “ The work lets me express how I see the world, and how I hope others can see it. It’s almost a vacation from the real world.” Blomgren’s inspiration is the natural world, and she often sculpts animals and wildlife in engaging poses, which also gives her a sense of calm. “I love the outdoors and how sunshine feels, even on the coldest days,” she says. Whether in her yard or out in the woods, walking the East Bay Bike Path, wandering down to the beach with her dogs, or exploring the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium in Bristol, Blomgren finds a serenity in the outdoors that translates seamlessly into her work. “I’m so lucky to live so close to all of this natural space.” In a society that thrives on digital connectivity and so cial sharing , Blomgren prefers to let her actions do all the talking instead. “I’ve never been ver y good with words, but sculpting allows me to tell an entire stor y with no words at all,” she explains. “I have this ability to see the piece that I want to create in my mind as I sculpt and it just builds itself into the space before me.” But that doesn’t have to be the methodolog y for ever yone – especially beginners. Blomgren makes clay sculp ture approachable, and encourages all to discover the joy, satisfaction, and calm that comes with creating. “ With the right teachers, anyone can do this. It doesn’t matter how much experience you start with; you’ll still end up with something that will make you smile – and the pro cess is so much fun, that just practicing gives you joy and the desire to do more.”
SCULPTING TAKES ME TO A MEDITATIVE SPACE WHERE I LOSE ALL TRACK OF TIME AND THE BUSY STUFF THAT MAKES UP THE REST OF MY LIFE.

5 Ways to Reduce Phone Time Less can be more when it comes to communication and information
Spending time mindlessly scrolling feeds and watching videos can seem relaxing until it isn’t. Suddenly hours have disappeared, or perhaps a post makes you feel left out, upset, or disturbed. As poet William Wordsworth wrote in 1802 in response to society veering toward materialism during the First Industrial Revolution, “The World Is Too Much with Us.” What would ol’ Willy say about iPhones? Here are some tactics to detach IRL. 1. Disable notifications, either by turning them off or using a “do not disturb” focus setting. 2. Do an activity that requires both hands, like knitting, beading, or painting. 3. Put down the e-reader and leaf through books and print magazines like this one.
Take a News Fast
It is important to be informed, but for the sake of mental health, consider taking a pause now and then. “Doomscrolling ” is an actual thing where checking news can become compulsive and upsetting.
74
Hey Rhody MEDIA CO.
4. Communicate with friends and family by writing letters and sending postcards. 5. Aim to store the phone away in a drawer for one day a week. Let others know on this day, you can’t be reached via app.

• FACIAL REJUVENATION
For others, finding a true sense of calm involves very little activity at all. Spa visits are often considered the pinnacle of indulgent luxury and frou-frou pampering, and while not entirely untrue, treatments can legitimately help soothe both mind and body. Inspire Medical Spa and Wellness Center in Narragansett offers BroadBand Light (BBL™) technology, which uses intense pulsed light therapy to treat different skin conditions. “BBL is a photothermal energy that will reduce the amount of fine vessels and unwanted melanin that produces pigmented lesions and redness,” explains Pamela Lutes, Inspire’s owner. “What’s really cool about that is that the device that we have here, they used in a 12-year Stanford University study, and it proved actual RNA and DNA change. So when you change the gene expression of the skin to that of younger skin, your skin doesn’t just look younger, it is younger. It is protective, it goes down deep, and it eradicates damage before it can turn into anything.” More than just beauty-driven, Lutes says the spa has doubled in size over the past year to accommodate growing demand and expand wellness services. IV therapy, for example, is an increasingly popular wellness trend that Inspire offers in which a high dose of minerals and vitamins are administered directly into a client’s bloodstream. “You can choose your cocktail of vitamins, antioxidants, minerals, and amino acids. We’re looking to strengthen immunity, and people feel more energetic. You can recover from a workout – or a night out – rehydrating, replenishing your body… People always tell me they just feel so much better after that,” says Lutes. She adds that the spa is seeing more appointments by men than ever before. “They’re just as stressed; it’s just different kinds of stressors,” Lutes explains. Facials, massage, and multiple treatments are designed to reduce stress, optimize relaxation and quiet mind and body. “One of the big things that I was learning when I went back to nurse practitioner school is how much stress influences every system in our bodies,” notes Lutes. And many spa treatments can be extended with self-care at home, whether that’s aromatherapy, sheet masks that moisturize, detoxify, hydrate or apply retinol or vitamin C, or, if you’re brave enough, cold plunges in the tub, which are said to potentially decrease inflammation, increase circulation, and boost endorphins. Finding your calm in a harried world isn’t always easy, but it’s well worth the pursuit.

REDUCE CLUTTER Keep, recycle, toss, or donate?
Most of us are familiar with professional organizer Marie Kondo’s famous question: “Does this spark joy?” But the act of actually posing this query to each site of clutter in your home isn’t so simple. Discarding things you don’t need can serve the dual purpose of freeing up mental bandwidth to focus on what’s important. Here are some services to help you take the first steps toward calmer spaces that spark joy, and once you’ve sorted “keep” from “discard,” donate lightly used garments and goods to nonprofits like Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Rhode Island (BGSRI.org).
