64 contestants will compete to become this year’s Wakefield Idol

Searching for Superstars Wakefield Idol wants to find Rhode Island’s next top pop star Sixty-four local singers are putting it all on the line for Wakefield Idol, Contemporary Theater Company’s annual throw down between big-time dreamers with larger-than-life voices. This year’s competition started in January, and the weekly contests are happening every Thursday through March 22, culminating in a final four face-off that will have judges and audience members deciding who will walk away as this year’s Wakefield Idol. And as if the

glory that comes with the title isn’t enough, the winner will find themselves $1,500 richer. If you’ve been craving emotional ups and downs since American Idol went off the air (without the smarmy British poo-pooing, of course), bundle up and get down to the Contemporary Theater. Who knows? You just might be a witness to the birth of the next great pop star. Wakefield, ContemporaryTheaterCompany.com

Novelist at Large Local author Derek Nikitas teams up with literary superstar James Patterson

Not long ago, Derek Nikitas was doing very well for himself. He’d moved to the Ocean State in 2014 to teach creative writing at the University of Rhode Island. He had a couple of novels under his belt and he’d been nominated for some major awards. He specializes in moody thrillers, and his work was winning attention in the US and abroad. Then, out of nowhere, Nikitas received a phone call. According to a representative, James Patterson was interested in collaborating on a book. James Patterson, the world’s most successful living author. To date, Patterson’s 147 books have sold more than 300 million copies. After an exhaustive audition process, Nikitas was invited to co-author two novellas with Patterson, Diary of a Succubus and You’ve Been Warned – Again. The first is about a supernatural assassin; the other concerns the mysterious presence of a girl’s dead brother. Both titles were published as

e-books and are part of Patterson’s “BookShot” series. “I had to stay in keeping with the kind of fiction expected from Patterson’s readers,” Nikitas recalls. “In practice, this means having a hook and a cliff-hanger every few pages, so the story has to keep propelling forward at breakneck speed.” But Nikitas was also able to insert his own experience and personality into the stories. A New Hampshire native, he studied and taught in North Carolina and Kentucky before settling in the Northeast. Nikitas found inspiration in his new home, and he set You’ve Been Warned in South County. “Now that I’ve been back [in New England] for a few years,” he says, “I’ve come to appreciate those unique qualities – the ruggedness of character, the haunted nature of our colonial past butting up against the present, the looming presence of the ocean and the woods. Probably more than anywhere else I’ve lived, Rhode Island almost immediately suggested to me settings, story lines, and characters.” Nikitas grew up watching horror films in the early 1980s, and the genre comes naturally to him. But Nikitas has also learned a great deal from his collaboration with a legend of suspense. “I think of horror and other fantastical genres as extended metaphors for our fears and anxieties, creative ways to conceptualize them,” he muses. “It’s a way to pretend we have some control over our fears, but also a frequent reminder that we don’t. The biggest insight I got from Patterson was

to imagine the narrator is telling the story to a listener, like a campfire storyteller. It’s amazing how that mindset can shift you away from ‘writerly’ lingering on setting or character interiority.” Both titles were released in 2017, and Nikitas is still riding the creative wave. He’s working on another novel set in Rhode Island, as well as a TV pilot. Suspense and horror remain his areas of expertise. “I love the challenge of taking a genre that many people find cheap and clichéd,” Nikitas says, “and giving it new life.” –Robert Isenberg

In Pain? We Can Help. Ray Harrington Gets Hilariously Personal An RI comic talks fatherhood, aging, and getting weird with candy Ask your doctor to refer you to Elite Physical Therapy today.

Our Physical Therapy fixes pain by correcting the cause safely and naturally. I wasn’t familiar with Rhode Island comic Ray Harrington’s act until I sat down with his new album, Overwhelmed, which is as good a first impression as any. He introduces himself to the crowd in “Boston-adjacent” Somerville as a man made up of “90 percent flannel, 10 percent pumpkin spice,” the type of person who would be found in the woods by a jogger at the beginning of a Law & Order episode. This won me over early, but when he later states, correctly, that the Reese’s Peanut Butter Egg is the best candy in existence, it’s clear that Harrington’s not just my kind of comic, he’s someone I’d like to have a beer with. Harrington covers a lot of ground across this record’s 16 tracks, from his favorite winter activities (Netflix and seasonal affective disorder) to the absurdity of adults with hamsters to his objection to being called a grammar Nazi despite meeting the criteria. What’s overwhelming are the nightmare gigs, swearing in front of his toddler, and the cruel pranks our bodies play on us as we get older. He’s infectiously charming in his delivery, and even when the material gets a little dark or debauched (fair warning, the track “Sex and Candy” has some great spit takes in it), it never feels cynical. There’s plenty of cynicism to go around, so it was nice to get away from it for a bit to spend some time in Harrington’s head, even if he’d be the first to admit that that’s a terrifying prospect. Catch him this month at the Courthouse Center for the Arts in West Kingston (CourthouseArts.org) on February 8 for their RI Advocacy for Children benefit show, Comedy for a Cause. —Tony Pacitti

Your Feature Presentation The Greenwich Odeum is committed to the classic movie business

Even though we all have more movie viewing options than ever before, it’s comforting to know that there are film buffs committed to showing classics the way they were meant to be seen. The Greenwich Odeum in East Greenwich has steadily been rolling out classic programming, with a screening of holiday classics leading up to Christmas and a doubleheader of two essential Clint Eastwood Westerns. But that’s just been the beginning. Steven Feinberg, vice president of the Greenwich Odeum and executive director of the Rhode Island Film and Television

Office, remembers seeing James Bond movies at the Odeum with his dad, so he’s especially proud to bring movies back to its screen. “I joined the board for nostalgic reasons,” he explains. “I love this theater.” For Feinberg, a great film is going to put people in the seats, and upcoming screenings certainly aren’t lacking for quality: think Blade Runner (February 2), The Shawshank Redemption (March 15), and Donnie Darko (April 19). They’ve also got interactive screenings lined up, like a Mary Poppins sing-along (February 3) and an

evening with the villains of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (March 2) making fun of cheesy old monster movies. Feinberg’s hope is that before long, the Odeum will be synonymous with classic cinema. “We want cinephiles to know that there are classic films playing here,” he says. And if his wish list of crowd favorites, cult classics, and essential doubleheaders has any say in it, movie lovers will have a lot to be thankful for in 2018. A guide to off-season fun in the City by the Sea

• by Jackie Ignall •

Newport is most likely your go-to spot in the summer months for its stunning coastline, tasty eateries, and lively entertainment, but it should be a must-visit in the off-season as well. Without the usual droves of tourists, you can easily find a parking spot as well

Lace up and hit the ice at the Newport Skating Center

as score that dinner reservation you always wanted.

Warm Up to Fireside Dining There’s nothing better than having a hot toddy or meal hearthside on a winter day. Overlooking the harbor, every table at 22 Bowens (22Bowens.com) comes with spectacular views. Nab one of the four tables that flank the upstairs fireplace for an extra toasty experience. Castle Hill Inn (CastleHillInn.com) serves up house-made pasta and Nantucket Bay scallops inside the nineteenth-century Victorian mansion overlooking two

wood-burning fireplaces, in addition to the ones featured in the lobby and mansion bar. The White Horse Tavern, America’s oldest tavern, (WhiteHorseNewport.com), plays up the cozy atmosphere within the uberquaint colonial building that it calls home, with multiple fireplaces to warm you while feasting on comfort food like beef Wellington and lobster mac n’ cheese. The old-world charm of the Clarke Cooke House features a

gas-burning fireplace in its wharf-level Candy Store (ClarkeCooke.com), while the bistro bar room, decked out with wood posts and beams, has a wood-burning one alongside a cozy couch you’ll want to snag if available. The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar (MooringRestaurant.com) offers seafood lovers waterfront views along with their shellfish towers, and a few tables by a wood-burning fireplace that stays lit all season long.

Party at Winter Fest When you can’t take another day sitting inside, head to Newport’s 30th annual Winter Festival (NewportWinterFestival.com). The fun-filled, ten-day festival, from February 16 to 25, caters to all ages and features food, music, and 150 events that are held at multiple locations in and near town. Some of this year’s events include a princess party, a concert by Jimmy Buffett tribute bandChanges in Latitudes, comedy shows, a chili cook-off, a hot drink contest, and two polo matches held on Easton’s Beach.

Take a Soak in Mineral-Infused Baths Work out those cold-weather kinks and spend a few hours at Bodhi Spa (TheBodhiSpa.com), New England’s only hydrotherapy day spa, which specializes in a rejuvenating water journey treatment to boost the circulatory system and get rid of toxins. The hot-cool treatment alternates hot mineral baths, cold plunge pools, wet and dry saunas, and a steam room, all for $55, which also gets you access for the entire day.

Listen to Live Music Newport has its share of intimate live music venues and often brings in some big-name acts. On Fridays and Saturdays, Newport Blues Café (NewportBlues. com) hosts live bands from all different genres starting at 10pm. Check out a slightly more intimate live music scene while you sip the extensive craft beer and wine selection at Norey’s (Noreys.com), which hosts performances on Wednesday nights and live jazz on Thursdays throughout the season. Play a game of pool at popular local hangout Jimmy’s Saloon (Facebook: Jimmy’s Saloon), which also features live local bands on certain nights.

Open year-round for tastings and tours, Newport Vineyards (NewportVineyards.com) offers visitors a behind-the-scenes look at the wine-making process. You can sip on wines by the glass or at one of their tastings, and, if you’re hungry, feast on duck confit pizzas, local oysters, and roasted chicken at their in-house restaurant, Brix. During the winter months, you can find wine and cheese classes, cooking demonstrations, and live music on the weekends. Newport Storm Brewery (NewportStorm.com), Rhode Island’s first microbrewery, offers self-guided tours, beer flights, and tastings of Thomas Tew Rum, named after the infamous Newport pirate.

Get the best of both worlds – yoga and massage – from All That Matters’ Thai Massage treatment in East Greenwich

Thai Massage at All That Matters Massage is equal parts relaxing and healing, but not everyone can lie still for an hour and enjoy it. Enter Thai Yoga Massage at All That Matters, which is a movement-based massage that incorporates yoga stretches, along with rhythmic massage and acupressure, to work the body’s energy lines. The massage is performed fully clothed on a mat on the ground for ease of movement. Wakefield, AllThatMatters.com

Any facial can make you look great, but it takes a truly special one to work on your mind and spirit at the same time. Shimmer Salon and Day Spa in East Greenwich offers gemstone spa services like facials and pedicures that incorporate actual gemstones, used to boost the body’s positive energy. During facials, seven gemstones along the sternum represent each of the chakras; during the pedicures, pink tourmaline and turquoise balance emotional and physical energy and promote healing. So, a bit of background for you. My hair isn’t something I like to “deal” with that often. I usually just let it dry and call it a day. But my color, done four months ago, was getting super grown out and my hair was almost freakishly long – getting stuck in my purse, under my body while I’m sleeping, and even in the car door kind of long. It was really time to do something. When I arrived at Jaclynn Kate Hair & Makeup Artistry Salon, I found out that Jaclynn, who was scheduled to take care of me that day, was unable to make it (you know, just busy having a baby). So one of her stylists, Taylor, very generously stepped up to the plate to take care of my hot mess. Taylor agreed that a balayage treatment, very grow-out friendly, would be best for my color, given my lazy approach to hair maintenance. In balayage, the color is painted on, producing something a bit more subtle than ombre. But before starting to paint, Taylor teased the section she was working on, explaining that this creates varied lengths of hair and therefore an uneven distribution of highlights, which produces a more subtle result. With my freakishly long hair, this process took some time. Taylor continued to section, paint, and foil until my whole head was covered in that oh-so-chic alien look that any woman who’s lightened her hair knows and loves. After the color had time to process and lighten, Taylor rinsed my hair and applied a toner. She went with a mix of neutral and warm tones that would work well with my light (or, dare I say, pale) complexion. That sat for about 15 minutes and with another rinse, we were off the chair again to begin the cut. Taylor graciously listened to my complaints about how long my hair was, and

we agreed on trimming about three inches off the bottom, which would curl up to about my collarbone when dry. As soon as she was done, I could tell that I had made the right choice. She straightened and styled my hair and it looked more glorious than I can recall in recent memory (again, lazy hair lady here). As I put on my coat and thanked the team at Jaclynn Kate, I realized I wasn’t tugging all of my hair out of my sleeves. My purse didn’t even get stuck on it. I was pumped! It felt long enough, even after letting it air-dry. The best part: the poof had returned to my formerly sad curls – not to mention the spot-on color. I’m totally ready to rock this hair, and when my laziness kicks back in again and I need a rescue, I’ve got someone to call.

How a couple and their homebuilding dream team built a summer home atop Green Hill

After 40 years of marriage and a number of homes built along the way, John and Laida Kearney were hardly intimidated when they decided to build a home in one of South Kingstown’s coastal communities. The only question they had was where to do it. After two years of searching for the right property, the couple had given up on their dream of a Rhode Island summer home. Then, one afternoon, Laida strayed from her usual biking route and came across an expansive lot

atop the “hill” of Green Hill, nestled between Trustom Pond National Wildlife Refuge and Green Hill Pond. She quickly hurried home to tell Bob about her discovery. “I told my husband, ‘You have to see the view from this lot!’” With panoramic vistas of the ocean and, in the distance, Block Island, the two knew they had found the ideal location to break ground. The Kearneys turned to Nancy Leslie of Leslie Architects, based in nearby Wakefield, after seeing many of her homes in the area. (To

date, the firm has completed over 525 projects, ranging from small, 17th-century historic restorations and waterfront homes to commercial projects). “I loved her style – the character, the details,” says Laida. The couple also needed an architect with design solutions that would complement their lifestyle. “Nancy was very good about taking feedback,” adds Laida. “We’ve built homes before, but this was different. Talk about building your dream house. This was truly that.”

The “upside down” layout, with bedrooms on the first floor and kitchen and living spaces higher up, allows homeowners to enjoy views during daylight hours.

popular in areas like South County, as many homeowners choose to make the most of the views during daylight hours when they cook, dine, and relax. For Laida, the kitchen is the heart of the home and her favorite place in the house. The rounded, expansive, light-filled space enjoys beautiful views of the pond and the ocean. “And my island is one huge slab of marble,” she adds. She intentionally had the kitchen designed to allow people to easily linger and congregate so that she could be part of the conversation while cooking – whether for two or 22. The third level indulges another of her passions: painting. There she enjoys a studio space, with surrounding views that are nothing short of inspirational. There’s also a deck on the third level where John likes

to relax with a cigar and sometimes a glass of wine. The couple decided during the design phase to add an additional bedroom to the floor, since the space practically begged for it. Their son lives there and enjoys the compelling vista. Today, the couple spends the summer, and even more time than they expected, living in the Ocean State.

Photography by Grace Lentini

The process, though lengthy, was seamless, says the couple. “From the architect to the craftsmen, this home was really a labor of love – everybody did it with love,” explains Laida. “It’s full of a lot of positive energy because of the people who built it.” Builder Steve Lawrence of Lawrence Builders in Narragansett says that the thoughtful design and unique details really set the house apart. “It’s an unbelievable house, one of the nicest in the state,” he says. “It’s not just a big house, it’s a nice home they actually use. They designed it around how they wanted to use it.” This architect-builder-homeowner “dream team” surpassed even their own expectations. “We wanted a house that ‘went with’ the area, one with a coastal New England feel,” says Laida. “That was all Nancy. When I first saw it on paper, I fell in love with it, and when Steve made it come to life, I was blown away.” Colloquially called an “upside down” house, the building’s layout is less traditional: bedrooms on the first floor and the kitchen and living spaces on a higher level. This design is becoming more and more

When they were roommates, makeup artist Katie Bouchard and musician Viana Newton formed a deep bond. “We spent so many nights sitting in the kitchen talking about spirituality, folklore, and family traditions,” they say. “We talked a lot about health issues we both had, and came to realize the cosmetic industry is not regulated as heavily as you might expect.” So they started making their own natural skin care products. “We wanted to create a line that was totally transparent about ingredients, and utilized a sort of old world method.” Now, their line, Potion, is available all over Rhode Island, including at All That Matters in South Kingstown, and online. So much of your line is based in aromatherapy. Are you trying to create a spa experience at home? Our shower melts are absolutely aromatherapy for the shower. When we lived together Viana would always hang eucalyptus in the showers during flu season. That eventually inspired the creation of our Sinus Blend Shower Melts, made with eucalyptus and camphor essential

oils. We then created the Calming Blend for winding down at the end of the night, and added Energizing Blend to give an extra burst to people who like to shower in the morning. What’s the theory behind your gem-infused scents? Witches have used crystals for centuries, including making holy water by infusing crystals into collected water and letting it sit for a full moon. We borrowed that idea to make a roll-on perfume to replace carrying crystals around. Each crystal – amethyst, onyx, citrine, quartz, and aventurine – is paired with aromatherapy that mirrors its metaphysical properties. They’re all totally different scents and energies. Choosing for yourself depends on what you need at this moment in time, whether it’s monetary issues, getting rid of negative energy, or simply wanting to connect to the world more. A lot of times the perfume seems to pick the person. Tell us more about your Coffee Eye Serum, made with coffee from The Nitro Cart. Shortly after we launched Potion we had a

conversation about using a local coffee company for our caffeinated products. We immediately thought of The Nitro Cart, but before we even had a chance to reach out, Audrey from Nitro asked if we would like to collaborate. It was meant to be. We love using caffeine in our products: it promotes circulation, bringing blood to the surface of your skin and helping new cell growth. For a product like our Coffee Eye Serum, it’s important to have caffeine as an ingredient to give it the power to get rid of puffy under-eye circles. What’s your favorite product? What do you use every day? That is a hard one. Both of us use our Coffee Eye Serum every day. We’ve been testing our unreleased face oils daily. One of the oils contains handcrafted, calendula-infused oil which helps our skin immensely as we both suffer from eczema and dry skin patches, especially during this winter weather. We’re working on releasing those face oils soon so that we can have a full Potion skin care routine released with our Facial Cleansing Wipes, our Pomegranate Tea Face Scrub, our Rose Water Toner, and our Coffee Eye Serum. In general we like to use all of our products personally, so that when someone has a question, we can give an honest answer of how the product has helped us. What’s special for February? We launched a Love Potion Basket for Valentine’s Day, only available until February 9. There is a Potion Body Scrub (Lemon Lavender, Nitro Coffee, or Orange Coconut), a Rose Quartz Lotion Bar (lavender or rose) with a rose quartz inside, a live plant, and a White Tea & Ginger Homebody candle inside a cute copper basket.

Comfort Food for the Win Back 40 finds the sweet spot with feel-good foods ($12): a tasty blend of Tanqueray, cranberry-citrus simple syrup, honey-ginger liqueur, Prosecco, and a sprig of rosemary for good measure. My cousin decided on the Honey Ginger Snap ($11) made with Ketel One, honey-ginger liqueur, lemon juice, and ginger beer. She enjoyed it. We also enjoyed several beers – Whalers Brewing Rise ($7), Boulevard Tank 7 ($6.50), and a Lord Hobo Glorious. Back 40’s menu features a variety of small plates. First we split the Crispy Brussels Sprouts ($6) – very flavorful with a nice, smoky char. They were served with thick-cut pieces of bacon, red peppers, and a not-too-sweet honey glaze. Next, we had the French Onion Deviled Eggs ($4), and the crispy onions on top made the dish. My cousin also sampled the Butternut Squash Bisque ($7), which was very thick and hearty. It leaned to the savory side and was large enough to qualify as a small meal. When it came time to order our main courses, both my friend and my cousin ordered the Back Mac ($10); my friend added pulled pork to her order of mac and cheese for an additional $5. The large, dinner-sized plates were heaped with cheesy bowtie pasta, and the homemade

cheese sauce was outstanding. The dishes were sprinkled with Ritz cracker crumbs to give them a crunch. I’m a sucker for Fried Chicken ($16), so if it’s on the menu, I have to order it. Back 40’s version was not what I expected, but really good: four thin, boneless breast pieces fried to perfection, with a side dish of rich chicken gravy. There was a lot of meat, but I managed to eat it all. A garlicky and excellent serving of red bliss mashed potatoes and dressed arugula salad came with the dish. Every good restaurant manages to serve one dish that everyone wants to order. On the Back 40 menu, you must order the Allie’s Donut Bread Pudding ($7): Allie’s donuts with a homemade vanilla custard base and topped with caramel-whiskey sauce and vanilla ice cream. The result is dessert nirvana. As we each took a bite of pudding, pure joy washed over our faces. I will go back to Back 40 just for this dessert.

During the cold winter months, comfort food is what we crave – and Back 40, which opened last fall, offers some of the best in Southern Rhode Island. Back 40 was opened by Rhode Island celebrity Olivia Culpo, a former Miss Universe and Miss USA born and raised in Cranston who teamed up with her restaurateur father, Peter Culpo, cousin Josh Culpo, and business partner Justin Dalton-Ameen. The name Back 40 refers to the last 40 acres of farmland, often considered the wildest and least tamed. Close to many farms, the restaurant pays homage to them with a rural, farmhouse ambiance, including open seating, a spacious bar area with high-top tables, and a comfortable lounging area around the fireplace. There are several big screen TVs as well to catch local sports teams in action. On a busy Saturday night, I settled into a high top in the bar area with my cousin and friend, and we ordered a round of drinks. It was difficult to pick: the delicious-sounding, hand-crafted cocktails were all made with top shelf liquor and the beer list was just as impressive, with many local options. I started with a Game of Thrones–inspired cocktail, Winter Is Coming

Deliciously Drive-Thru Gourmet Italian cuisine without leaving your car at Gemelli Bistro What gave you the idea for a drive-thru? As I conducted my market research, I learned that many sandwich shops in the Midwest have added drive-thru to their buildings and increased their profits significantly. Our concept is to provide gourmet food fast. My own experience and conversations with other single parents revealed that there is definitely a need for a quality healthy meals to take home without having to get kids in and out of car seats. You’ve featured a number of specials since opening: Pumpkin Ravioli, Escarole and Bean Soup, and so on. How much do you get to innovate in the kitchen? We have a multitude of family recipes that we have lined up to introduce as specials as we grow. We have added items like Pigs in a Blanket, using sweet Italian sausage wrapped and baked in a blanket of fresh dough with a side of marinara for dipping; Spinach Pies that burst with the flavor of fresh garlic and black olives; and Single Serving Lasagna layered deep with both ground beef and Italian sausage. We have some veal dishes and seafood dishes coming soon.

Nicole Manfredo of Gemelli Bistro

If you have time, you can find a table at Gemelli Bistro and enjoy a sit-down Italian meal. If you’re pressed, you can walk up to the counter, pick up some sandwiches, and head back to work. But Gemelli offers a third option: You can drive up and place your order, then pick it up at a window. Instead of burgers and fries, you can grab gnocchi and wedding soup without leaving your car. We talked to owner Nicole Manfredo about her radical new Charlestown cocina. How did Gemelli Bistro get started? I came to a crossroads in my life when my marriage ended shortly after my twin girls were

born. The divorce wiped me out financially and I was at ground zero. An old proverb kept resonating in my mind: find something you love to do and make a living from it and you will never work a day in your life. I remembered how much I loved just being in the moment when I’m preparing a meal and appreciating the smell of the fresh herbs like garlic and basil, a simmering pot of fresh sauce, and a chicken roasting in the oven. How could I continue this tradition as a single mother? The answer to all of these questions was Gemelli Bistro. My twin girls are truly my inspiration, hence the name Gemelli, meaning twins in Italian.

What makes an Italian meal “authentic”? Authentic Italian to me means preparing meals the way my ancestors who were native to Italy prepared them. After my grandmother’s family came to America, she nurtured seven children and survived the Great Depression because she was inherently innovative and would make a meal from the scarcest ingredients and season them to taste. Inscribed on the wall above our menu [is] “Amici Benvenuti,” meaning “Friends Welcome.” Our customers have become our friends and we plan to continue to provide them with only the best.

That’s Crafty Shaidzon Beer Co. sets up shop in West Kingston Locals Josh Letourneau and Chip Samson have long been beer lovers. After graduating from the American Brewer’s Guild in 2009, Letourneau amassed over eight years of professional brewing experience at reputable breweries including Mayflower and Grey Sail. Meanwhile, Samson developed a passion and understanding for the business of brewing during the years he spent living on the West Coast. Their combined expertise led them to launch Shaidzon Beer Co. in a newly redone space inside the Arnold Lumber Complex, in West Kingston. The brewery opened its doors in November and is currently offering six meticulously crafted brews on tap. Some beer selections are inspired by Letourneau’s global travels, such as their London Dungeon (a London porter) and the Buffalo Czech (a Czech-style pilsner). Check online for more information about special events and new beer releases. West Kingston, ShaidzonBeer.com

Since 1881, Munroe Dairy has delivered farm-fresh milk in glass bottles to front doorsteps across the region. After 137 years of service, Munroe still specializes in smallbatch milk and reusable vessels. After generations of ownership by the Armstrong family (who purchased the dairy from the Munroes in 1936), an alliance of local families has jointly purchased the company. The dairy will move forward with Tracy and Bill Daugherty as the new managing partners. Much of the company’s traditional operations will remain intact. Customers can still expect to see the charming cow-spotted delivery trucks traveling about town, and the dairy will retain all of its 72 employees. The Daughertys will continue to grow the business and invest in new products, services, and equipment, including a mobile app and a commercial kitchen, which is tentatively slated to open this spring. The dairy will also explore new partnerships with local food and beverage outfits and expand Sacred Cow, its line of baked goods. CowTruck.com

“DANCING ISN’T JUST FUN IT’S REALLY GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH” BY LINDSAY HOLMES

Line dancing promotes the use of both sides of the brain. One side to learn the dance pattern, the other side to recall and repeat the dance pattern. The different tempos and rhytms of music used in country line dancing along with the many choreographies taught and danced proves to increase memory.

Approved Pour on the Romance Dinner and chocolate are Valentine’s favorites, but nothing whispers “romantic evening” like a bottle of fine wine or champagne. On the hunt for fermented perfection, we asked some South County wine vendors about their most seductive selections.

Pier Liquors, Narragansett Recommendation: Rebel Coast Reckless Love “It’s a Cab-Merlot blend. It’s got a great body, it’s velvety, and it’s really easy to drink. It’s more aimed at that 22-to-40 age demographic – the bottle actually glows in the dark. The cork has the phone numbers for the guys who made it, so you can call them and tell them what you think.” -Dina Lindia, Wine Manager

Charlestown Wine & Spirits, Charlestown Recommendation: Broc Love White “It’s a richer white wine made with Rhône varietals. It’s lush, with hints of peaches, melons, and maybe a little tropical fruit. The label is almost like a wood carving, and the white spaces are all hearts. There’s a red Love White, too, but the white is more accessible.” -Justin Hutchins, Wine Manager

The Wine Store, Westerly Recommendation: Meinklang Frizzante Rosé “This is a lightly sparkling Pinot Noir that has a touch of sweet on the palate. It is vibrant and fresh and sure to please.” -Tim Celico, Manager
