After heart surgery, Tia came back stronger. Tia thought her chest pain and shortness of breath were symptoms of too much holiday stress. It turned out Tia was having a heart attack. She was rushed to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital where the cardiovascular team made the diagnosis and performed a life-saving procedure to open a blocked artery. Since Tia lives in Westerly, she received cardiac rehabilitation and follow-up care at Westerly Hospital. Now Tia feels better than ever, enjoying every day with her family. As part of Yale New Haven Health, Westerly Hospital provides expert, coordinated care so heart patients like Tia can come back healthier. See Tia’s comeback story at westerlyhospital.org.

MKindred pairs each pendant with its stone for a powerful combination of energy

CHARMING, WITH GREAT INTENTION MKindred Jewelry puts creativity and soul into handmade pieces that inspire “Manifest what you wish.” MKindred Jewelry’s slogan reflects its philosophy: Owners Melanie Ryan and Keri Marden believe in the power and beauty of natural stones and the ability of intentionally crafted jewelry to inspire and empower. Each piece is made from semi-precious gemstones, sterling silver, pewter, and 14k gold plating. However, as Ryan and Marden would put it, it’s “handmade with a dash of magic by two kindred spirits.” These two spirits, both Rhode Island natives, jointly launched the MKindred jewelry line in 2014 after having met working at a jewelry store. What started as pop-up shops grew into an online storefront selling their beautiful bracelets and necklaces inspired by natural elements and, appropriately, the ocean.

“We want to make something that looks good and feels good,” says Marden, referring to the jewelry’s ability to lift the wearer’s spirits. “We pair each charm with its stone,” adds Ryan. “For example, we pair a heart pendant with rose quartz, which symbolizes love and compassion.” Despite a burgeoning market of handmade jewelry, MKindred sets itself apart with soul and creativity found in everything from their materials, design, and even collection names; you can’t help but feel Ryan and Marden’s spirit in each one. MKindred pieces can be found at top local retailers like JWGraham in Wickford, Sweet Twist in East Greenwich, and The Purple Cow in Wakefield. Wickford, MKindred.com -Megan Schmit

Yes, She’s Got a Voice The Vagina Monologues shines a light on local women’s stories

Twenty years ago, Wickford resident Nancy Rafi was dragged to Boston by her friends to see Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues. “It was pouring rain, it was cold, I didn’t want to be there,” Rafi recalls. “Then we get to the Majestic Theater and I find we’re in the nosebleed seats.” Two hours later, she was transfixed by what she experienced not only on stage, but by the overwhelming sense of community she found in the audience. She decided to bring the show – and its message of female empowerment – to Rhode Island. Nineteen “V-Day” events later, Rafi continues to spearhead the annual production. “Sometimes it’s best not to know what you’re getting into,” she says. Each year, playwright Ensler allows her play to be performed royalty-free from February

12

SORhodeIsland.com • February 2019

1 to March 16 under the “V-Day” moniker. To participate, proceeds from ticket sales must go to local charities that do work supporting women and children who are victims of violence. Each year, new monologues are added that address a significant social issue affecting women. This year’s theme is incarcerated women. It is the first year that Ensler is allowing each production to write their own monologues to focus on stories specific to their local communities. So, Rafi and her cast went searching for formerly incarcerated local women willing to share their stories. “What I love about this event is that it turns us all into social activists,” Rafi explains. “Through our rehearsal process, our conversations move from the issue into activism. I love watching the women bloom.”

Lisa Peterson, a therapist by trade and self-described recovering introvert, is in her second year performing at the V-Day event. “Telling these stories – stories that we all have and we all know – takes the stigma away,” she says. “It’s validating to know we are not alone.” With the distinction of having the most productions of The Vagina Monologues since the V-Day celebrations began, Ensler anointed Rafi “The Vagina Grandmother.” For Rafi, a survivor of both domestic violence and incest, the work is deeply personal. “We don’t have spaces for women to get together, to talk, to not be judged,” Rafi says. “Women need a good listening to. Being heard is our first step towards healing.” See The Vagina Monologues at the Greenwich Odeum on February 23 at 2pm and 7pm. VDayRI.com -Karen Greco

In the southern county of the smallest state, one Wakefield woman is taking strides to connect our community to the greater world through the power of yoga. Midge Kahn first brainstormed OmAway Yoga after an international retreat to

Mexico. “I wanted to do more traveling,” she says. “What better way to experience that than with group of people who all love yoga – and at a fair price.” OmAway Yoga launched in 2014, led by Kahn and local instructors Mel Wegimont

DID YOU KNOW? and Paula Levesque, and the business quickly became so much more than just a vacation featuring downward dog. “First, you begin with a group of like-minded people, and, whether you knew each other before or not, you share this intimate space,” Kahn explains. “By the end of the week, you create this atmosphere that you experience all together.” In the spring, Kahn and her groups usually visit the world-class Bodhi Tree resort in the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. Alongside enjoying time in a designated “Blue Zone,” or “one of the happiest places in the world,” participants on this retreat get to fully experience the culture of Nosara while practicing traditional yoga. The yoga sessions take place in one of four studios under the guidance of OmAway’s trained instructors. “It’s not your typical yoga class,” Wegimont explains. “It’s a little more intimate.” On top of guided lessons, those on the Bodhi Tree week-long retreat can enjoy three healthy meals a day and a whole menu of spa services, and island excursions are also available. In the summer and fall, Kahn invites instructors of all different practices – yoga, reiki, meditation – and their students to the OmAway Retreat House in the Green Mountains of Vermont. Six students and their instructor can experience this retreat for up to four nights. The Retreat House is fully equipped with mats, blocks, straps, and blankets, and is located alongside a spring-fed pond, mere miles from the Appalachian Trail. “The objective is to take people somewhere extraordinary, and explore the beauty of the environment as well as the beauty within ourselves,” Kahn explains. OmAway keeps the values and practices of yoga at the heart of its retreats, and reminds yogis of all levels that it’s really about the journey, not the destination. OmAwayYoga.com -Ava Callery

Filling the Job Skills Gap New training labs at the Westerly Education Center develops a better workforce The new labs at WEC focus on STEM skills like chemistry and biomanufacturing to create a more tech-savvy workforce

Employers frequently complain that they can’t find qualified applicants. The Westerly Education Center (WEC), located at 23 Friendship Street in Westerly, is working to solve that problem with its new biology and chemistry training labs that are built to foster workforce development. WEC was founded in 2017 and is managed

by the State Of Rhode Island’s Office of the Postsecondary Commissioner. According to Amy Grzybowski, the organization’s executive director, the idea for the new labs took root when WEC’s building was under construction. A Pfizer employee met with Grzybowski to explain that he had to deal with an aging workforce

OPEN 365 DAYS A YEAR! and no organization was developing job candidates with the right skill set. His firm and others in similar industries were hiring candidates with bachelor’s degrees, but the jobs didn’t require that background. Instead, the positions’ skills could be learned with more condensed and job-specific training in process technology, which focuses on lab and manufacturing skills instead of research. That recognition led to a successful grant application in which WEC worked with 10 local employer-partners to secure the labs’ funding. “We wanted to create something that could better serve people and better serve the employers,” says Grzybowski. “So, we developed a curriculum with CCRI and then built out these laboratories to support the program. But we made the space flexible, so it’s not just for this program – we’ll be able to offer the space to other institutional partners who may need labs for their programs.” The 10-week, 300-hour curriculum includes components of chemistry, process technology, and biomanufacturing; the course uses both labs to teach the required skills. The first class of 16 students graduated in late December 2018; WEC works with employers to arrange job interviews and placements for the students. A second class started in late January and will be followed by another class later this year. The program is part of the Real Jobs Rhode Island initiative, and Rhode Island residents are exempt from tuition and fees. Application information is available online. “Our mission is workforce and higher education, so this creates another employer-driven program that will help adult learners and help employers meet their growing needs,” Grzybowski explains. “We hope to place unemployed and underemployed peoples in jobs, but also help them figure out what their career and higher-ed paths might be.” WesterlyEdCenter.org -Ed McCarthy

Made for More Operation Made is a gift shop for and by veterans and military families

Operation Made is a gift shop with a mission, stocked with art and products made by local veterans

With a mission to encourage and empower entrepreneurship within the military community, Operation Made has certainly been successful in its goal since their Veteran’s Day 2018 opening in Warwick. The gift shop, spearheaded by former military spouse and maker Nicole O’Brien, has had a significant impact on the local military community since their launch. O’Brien, who knows a lot of fellow veteran and military spouse artisans, says that “Operation Made is an outlet for [these] veterans and their families to showcase their talents, to test out their products, and to help them navigate the start-up process of entrepreneurship.” Seeking out unique, one-of-a-kind artisans

and brands, the shop juries their vendors so as to not have too many products in one category. Their merchandise, sourced mostly from local veterans or military spouses, includes products like beard oil by the Wench Tickler, coffee by Black Rifle Coffee Company, handcrafted wood products like flower arrangements and flags, jewelry, handbags, soaps, license plate art, photography, paintings, home decor, grilling tools, hot sauces, and much more. Proceeds fully benefit the vendors, with 70 percent of the sales going back to them directly, and the remaining 30 percent going back to the shop to keep up with operating costs. Locally, the reaction has been nothing

short of spectacular: from day one, Rhode Islanders have welcomed and supported the shop and its staff. O’Brien says, “I am grateful to our vendors who have willingly trusted their merchandise with me,” adding that “without their support and faith in this business, [Operation Made] could not operate.” She is also thankful for Mayor Solomon and staff for the opportunity to launch the store and for those visitors who have already made it their shopping destination. Says O’Brien, “I am humbled by the community’s support and look forward to bringing Operation Made to more communities throughout the nation.” Facebook: Operation Made -Caroline Boyle

The Scoop | rhody gem

Mills Creek Gift Shop

We are pleased to introduce Rhody Gem, a new monthly column in So Rhode Island. We’re always being thanked for spotlighting the “hidden gems” of the state, and in our ongoing efforts to leave no stone unturned, we’re putting the call out to our readership! Each month we’ll spotlight a Rhody Gem: a business, artisan, or place suggested to us by our faithful readers.

Photography by Savannah Barkley for SO Rhode Island

What it is: Mills Creek is a natural market stocked with assorted goods, much of which have been made by owner Kate Bussey and her family of seven. Lining the shelves you’ll find Waldorf inspired children’s toys, jewelry, flower pressed beeswax candles, and hand knit sweaters, hats and gloves, along with holistic lines of face and body care. There are also homegoods like oyster shuckers, stained glass, and paintings. Bussey has turned a rough-hewn cottage into a thoughtful shopping destination. Where to find it: On Route 1 heading south, across from the Cross’ Mills Public Library. What makes it a Rhody Gem? “It smells so good!” says nominator Julia Riordan Scherer. “It is a beautiful space with thoughtful, purposeful, handmade gifts created by local artisans and Fair Trade. Kate, is a wonderful person with integrity and such a light. I am thankful I can shop there all year long.”

Welcome To The Jungle A brand-new rainforest exhibit at Roger Williams Zoo showcases tropical wildlife – and kicks off a 20-year Master Plan By Robert Isenberg Photos courtesy of Roger Williams Zoo

T

he first thing you feel is heat. Step through the great wooden doors, and your skin turns warm and clammy. Glasses fog up. Winter coats feel heavy. Here, the 80-degree air contrasts starkly with Rhode Island winter. As you strip away gloves and wool cap, the rainforest emerges – tree trunks and palm fronds rise upward, great curtains of green. Monkeys scamper over vines. Birds shriek their greetings from the canopy. Edenic, like the lost valleys of adventures tales, Faces of the Rainforest sprawls beneath a 40-foot glass ceiling. After two years of construction and roughly $14 million, Faces of the Rainforest is now open to the public. The facility is less like a diorama than a slice of actual rainforest: Over 100 species of plants share newly laid soil. Creeks meander along the floor. A sloth lounges in the treetops. A toucan arches its head, and an aardvark scuttles. Some of these animals were already here – the Saki monkey, the elegant crested tinamou, the Chilean flamingos – yet 35 additional species were carefully selected from a national network of zoos, then quarantined for 30 days before being introduced to their new home. The real stars are the giant otters. Native to the Amazon,

Linne’s Two-toed Sloth

they’re far bigger than their North American cousins, measuring five feet in length. A dedicated tank allows them to swim around in endless, mellifluous figure eights. They surface, their whiskers briefly visible above the water’s skin, and then they dive again. At any time of day, you’ll see children pressed against the glass, watching the otters shimmy through the murk. “There he is!” they cry. “He’s coming this way! Look! Look!”

hy a rainforest? Why bring the jungle to a cold, coastal state like Rhode Island? The decision mostly came from the public, thanks to a series of surveys. “Everybody, almost unanimously, said, ‘More primates, more monkeys,’” says Dr. Jeremy Goodman, the zoo’s director. “They wanted a warm spot for people to escape the weather. When you put all that together, it was kind of obvious we needed an indoor, South American area.” But Faces of the Rainforest is ground-

breaking on several levels. The Amazon, with its rapid deforestation and vanishing species, is a vivid reminder of humanity’s impact on nature; the lush color and texture of a rainforest speaks to Earth’s biodiversity, and what is at stake. Outside the building, plaques and interactive installations explain the value of this teeming biome. The zoo’s education team wanted to post simple tips – simple enough for children to follow at home – for lessening our environmental footprint: eating sustainably,

reducing waste, using responsible palm oil products, and so on. Meanwhile, the exhibit is the first step in a 20-year Master Plan, which will bring a brand-new education center, improved infrastructure, and New England’s first reptile house. As long as the nonprofit zoo can meet its fundraising goals, the team will build new enclosures for sea lions and Humboldt penguins, an enlarged primate exhibit, and an upgraded tiger habitat. Roger Williams is the third-oldest zoo in the country, and it already commands national respect among professional zoologists. But Goodman and his colleagues hope to radically enhance its facilities over the next two decades. Any project that involves animals must be carefully mapped out. Creating a synthetic rainforest has unique challenges, starting with the exact animals to display. Many species – tapirs, the arapaima fish, and even jaguars – were briefly considered, then dismissed. “We had some very lively discussions, dating back well over three years ago,” says Goodman. “We look at a number of factors. First and foremost, can we take proper care of them? We’re building brand-new facilities, so we were confident about that. Then there’s availability. Even if we wanted to exhibit a giant armadillo, there aren’t any available at all. There were a lot of things we decided not to go with, because, unfortunately, we can’t put everything we wanted in the building.” This kind of indoor ecosystem also requires animals that will “get along.” One of the exhibit’s most memorable members is the howler monkey, a pensive-looking primate with a heavy fur coat. The zoo picked howlers over spider monkeys, which are far more territorial. “Spider monkeys are very cool and very dynamic,” says Goodman, “but we would have been limited to that one species.” The building itself is also a feat of engineering, since it defies New England’s natural climate and must accommodate many different orders of animal. One waterway must be habitable for a nine-foot anaconda, while a separate tank houses the giant otters. Some birds are allowed to fly freely about the atrium; the toucan is gently contained under a net. Beneath the building, there is a complex labyrinth of pipes and electrical systems, which maintain proper temperatures, irrigate water, and protect against power outages. Faces of the Rainforest celebrated its grand opening on November 30. In the minutes

before its doors opened for the first time, hundreds of people gathered in front of the shining new structure. Families and school groups filled the lot, along with reporters lugging cameras. The weather was cool and overcast. There were several moving speeches, first by Maribeth Williamson, chair of the Rhode Island Zoological Association, then by Mayor Jorge Elorza. “I can only think of all the young people who are going to step inside and look up in wonder at the amazing flora, and the

animals and the birds they’re going to see here,” said Elorza. “And I would love to think that any of them are going to be inspired about leading a sustainable life.” After their dedications, Elorza, Williamson, and Goodman stood before their audience. Goodman held a giant pair of scissors. But it wasn’t a ribbon they snipped; it was a leafy vine. The vine fell away; the crowd applauded. Moments later, everyone marched toward the open entrance, slipping into a warm new world. SORhodeIsland.com • February 2019

LIVE music venues to catch your favorite local bands By Bob Curley Jason Cardinal performing at Ocean Mist

Photography by Wolf Matthewson

L

ike so many things in Rhode Island, going out to hear live music in South County isn’t just about what you hear, but who you meet. That guy over by the bar at the Knickerbocker Music Center might just be a local fan of the bands onstage – on this night, it’s Maine roots rock road warriors The Mallett Brothers Band and the Joplinesque, Boston-based Say Darling – or it could be Kevin Finnegan, owner of the Ocean Mist, who can hear all the bands he wants at his own oceanfront bar, but still comes out on a Sunday evening to see who’s playing at the Knick. Venues like the Greenwich Odeum showcase national touring acts like rock veterans Blue Öyster Cult and Rickie Lee Jones, but most nights, it’s your friends and neighbors under the lights at local bars and restaurants, doing what they love for a few hours a week after their “real” work day ends. (You might spot North Kingstown school superintendent Phil Auger, for example, playing guitar and providing lead vocals for the Ten Rod Ramblers, a staple act at places like the Oak Hill Tavern in North Kingstown and the Breachway Grill in Charlestown.) “The amazing thing is the amount of musical talent around here,” says Breachway Grill co-owner Craig Marr. “They do it mostly for passion – they don’t make a lot of money – and to have a night out and have some fun.” (For most players, taking home $100 is considered a good night, so please do fill those tip jars if you like what you hear.) The shared sense of community even extends to out-of-town acts like The Mallett Brothers, who have played at venues like the Knickerbocker, Ocean Mist, and even a few backyard parties in South County since forming in 2009. “The Ocean Mist is one of our favorite places to play. It’s got great vibes and really reminds us of home,” says singer and guitarist Luke Mallett of the Portland-based band. “This is a scene to be proud of,” adds brother Will Mallett, readily name-checking a list of his favorite local acts that includes Deer Tick, Smith & Weeden, Cactus Attack, The Silks, and Westerly’s own Wild Sun. With a half-dozen major music venues and a variety of smaller stages at local bars, restaurants, and coffee houses, there’s rarely a lack of opportunity to slip on your dancing shoes in South County. See sidebar for some favorite hangouts.

The Knickerbocker Music Center Blue Öyster Cult performing at the Greenwich Odeum

Bands have been playing in this historic nightclub across from the Westerly train station since 1933, and “the Knick” is going as strong as ever after its recent rebirth as a nonprofit music education center. The room itself is a delight, with elevated seating arrayed in a semicircle around a spacious dance floor; you even have a decent view of the stage from the main bar despite its relative distance from the performers. The birthplace of Roomful of Blues, the Knick still hosts performances by founder Duke Robillard, dance-friendly acts like Superchief Trio and Eight to the Bar on the main stage, and solo acts in the Tap Room. 35 Railroad Avenue, Westerly

The Mishnock Barn You can learn to line dance any night from Friday through Wednesday at West Greenwich’s Mishnock Barn, then put your newfound skills to the test on Thursdays when country bands play in the lakefront barn from 7pm to 11pm. 200 Mishnock Road, West Greenwich

THE GREENWICH ODEUM Born as a vaudeville house in 1926, the Greenwich Odeum spent most of its life as a movie theater before being reinvented as a venue for live music. With just 410 seats (plus another 80 coming when the renovated balcony opens later this year), the Odeum is just intimate enough to provide a genuine sense of connection with performers like Nick Lowe, Graham Parker, The Bacon Brothers, and Evan Dando, as well as a variety of tribute bands covering the catalogues of Queen, Tom Petty, Fleetwood Mac, and other classic rock groups. Odeum President Dan Speca says the location in the heart of downtown East Greenwich, with its many shops and restaurants, adds to the theater’s appeal for performers and patrons alike. “The artists like the charming nature of this town,” he says. 59 Main Street, East Greenwich

Narragansett Cafe There’s never a cover charge at the ‘Ganny, even for the Jamestown venue’s popular Sunday blues show (dubbed Blues, Bloodies and Brunch during the winter months). Plus, there’s live music every Friday and Saturday night year-round and Thursdays in the summer. 25 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown

Oak Hill Tavern Free popcorn and peanuts, fresh smoked BBQ, and live music on Fridays and Saturdays from one-, two-, and three-piece country, rock, and cover bands make this North Kingstown bar/restaurant always an entertaining stop. 565 Tower Hill Road, North Kingstown

The Trap This wildly popular East Greenwich bar has live country and acoustic music several nights a week, year-round. 195 Old Forge Road, East Greenwich

Pump House Music Works Located in a former waterworks and born out of a luthier’s shop and guitar-making school, Pump House Music Works is appropriately eclectic in its scheduling of musical acts, which can range from classical violin performances to jazz and “psychedelic space punk” rockers The Viennagram – and nary a tribute band in sight. The intimacy of the 125-person room is enhanced by community-oriented potluck and open mic events, held each month. 1464 Kingstown Road, South Kingstown

Beaver Brown at Courthouse Center for the Arts

Breachway Grill Local performers – soloists up to fourpiece bands, including house band Russ and Jeff – cover the Beatles, Billy Joel, and more on weekend nights in the winter, plus Thursdays during the summer. 1 Charlestown Beach Road, Charlestown

Chair 5 Guitar-strumming singers provide the soundtrack to summer nights on the outdoor deck at the Break Hotel’s rooftop bar. 1208 Ocean Road, Narragansett

The Charlestown Rathskeller The outdoor stage at the Rat is one of the best places in South County to enjoy live music on a summer night, and in the cooler months, bands like the fantastic Take It to the Bridge and Glenn Kendzia strip it down for more laid-back performances in the tavern. 489A Old Coach Road, Charlestown

George’s of Galilee Classic rock cover band Second Avenue plays at Rhode Island’s venerable dockside seafood restaurant every Sunday afternoon, and you can enjoy your lobster dinner with a side of acoustic tunes on Friday and Saturday nights even in the dead of winter (and nightly in the summer). 250 Sand Hill Cove Road, Narragansett

Perks & Corks This Westerly coffee and wine bar serves up live folk, rock, and blues six nights a week. 62 High Street, Westerly

COURTHOUSE CENTER FOR THE ARTS Feeling good and doing good is part of the fun of attending a show at Kingston’s Courthouse Center for the Arts, where proceeds help fund inclusion programs for young artists with autism, learning disabilities, and Down syndrome. Shows take place in a former courtroom with 265 seats but just seven rows of seating, giving nearly everyone a prime view of a steady stream of tribute bands (Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, Prince, The Doors, The Doobie Brothers) interspersed with shows by the likes of Rita Coolidge and Aztec TwoStep and occasionally more contemporary acts that draw students from the nearby University of Rhode Island. A bonus for attending shows is the chance to browse through the art gallery on the courthouse’s first floor. “There’s music down here in South County,” says Executive Director Mariann Almonte. “You just have to come and find us.” 3481 Kingstown Road, West Kingston

Jason Cardinal performing at Ocean Mist

THE OCEAN MIST Performers at Finnegan’s rambling beach bar turn up the sound to drown out the sound of the surf rolling right under the venue’s outdoor deck and tiki bar, which serve as a refuge for conversation and fresh air when things get hot and rocking, especially in mid-summer. Reggae has long been a staple at the Mist – Morgan Heritage and dancehall legend Yellowman are among the many bands to have played here – but you also can catch up-and-coming local acts, tribute bands, and veterans like Steve Smith and The Nakeds and The Senders onstage, with free shows on weekend afternoons. A few steps down the sand, The Pub is an Irish bar with live acoustic music. 895 Matunuck Beach Road, Wakefield

Entertaining Thoughts The Captain’s Table Valentine’s Day got us thinking about the indulgent treat of coffee in bed. So, we headed to The Captain’s Table in Wickford where owner Chris Bourget assembled everything we would need to make February 14 – or any morning – special. Simply Transformed A once-dark cottage is treated to a contemporary makeover

When Dave and Beth Mercier were looking for a beach house to enjoy with their grown sons Rob and Joe and their friends, they wanted it to have a dock and they didn’t want it to be too far from their Connecticut base. A search lead the family to South Kingstown and a place not only with a dock, but an outdoor shower and beach access. Perfect, right? Except that the property was in desperate need of repair. The small, seasonal dwelling had dark paneling, dated appliances, and zero insulation or storage space. “We actually brought friends to go look at it and their reaction was ‘ugh!’ But Dave could see what it could be and he understood the value of the dock, the shower,

the beach pass,” says Beth. To help make this vision into a reality, the couple turned to Blakely Interior Design out of North Kingstown, a trusted firm they’d used before. “When Dave called us to come take a look at it, we saw the same vision he did. It had good bones, despite being an… well, eye sore,” says Janelle Blakely Photopoulos, owner and principal designer. Photopoulos and her team got busy planning and executing a design that would be “updated and fresh, and could sleep as many people as possible, for lots of summer memories for the

SENSE OF PLACE Accents such as a framed print of coral and seaside-inspired art, all give location clues in a chic and subtle way. SHOP LOCAL Infuse spaces with original, local art and accessories. Photopoulos suggests Kristen Coates in Newport and the Candita Clayton Gallery at Hope Artiste Village in Pawtucket. BRIGHT WHITE Worried that white is boring? Think again. A pure white can shine when a mix of textures are used like shiplap, subway tile, and cabinetry. Even a fresh coat of semi-gloss or satin paint works wonders. Merciers and their friends.” “The place was gutted,” says Beth. “As gutted as you could get,” Photopoulos affirms. Structural changes included relocating the side door and widening the kitchen to create more storage and maximize functionality. Once dark and closed in, the design team aimed for the opposite: “A light, bright, and airy space that felt welcoming” says Photopoulos. Walls, shiplap paneling, and tile in pure white were prescribed to maintain an airy

flow in the 750-square-foot property. The use of natural fibers such as open weave light fixtures, baskets, and shades contribute to the breezy coastal vibe, as do jaunty elements like natural textiles, lively wallpaper, and stripes. Washable slipcovers and pillows abound, adding easy-care comfort and color. “We don’t want to worry about being too careful about fancy furniture. We entertain just about every weekend and have lots of guests. For a tiny cottage – the

place can now sleep 12 comfortably,” begins Beth. “It’s only one-and-a-half hours from our home in Connecticut, so it’s easy to get here, but every weekend feels like we are on vacation far away.”

Founder of Lily’s Ladle When my son was three months old, we were in the middle of a cold winter and our whole little family got sick. It was a scary place to be, snowed in with a baby who was struggling to breathe normally. A friend sent an article about bone broth and said, ‘Lily, you already make your own broth, just add more bones and let it cook for another day.’ So that’s exactly what I did. I was hopeful it would help us get over the virus and it did within three days. After that, I started to ‘broth bomb’ friends and family and leave frozen broth on friends’ doorsteps. Then people started asking if they could pay me to make them some and Lily’s Ladle was born. I come from a family of land and food lovers. Everyone in my family cooks: old and young, male and female. Through my family, I learned the difference between vegetables eaten fresh from the ground, versus something picked unripe and trucked to the grocery store. When I started my company I knew I would use local meat suppliers. I source my 100 percent grass-fed beef bones and all my chicken within Rhode Island. It’s fresh and excellent quality, and I don’t need to go elsewhere. When I want a savory snack and a shot of clean protein, I’ll heat up a mug of chicken or beef bone broth and add a little flavor to it (my go-to lately has been several shakes of soy sauce, sprinkles of garlic and ginger powder, and salt and pepper). It’s great after a run outside in the cold or in the evening before bed. It satisfies cravings for something salty and fills me up. And, beef bone broth before bed promotes healthy sleep patterns. I live in East Greenwich and love that I’m equally likely to go to the Hope Artiste Winter Farmers Market in Pawtucket as I am to make a 6:30am group workout with the November Project on First Beach in Newport. Rhode Islanders really, truly embrace food entrepreneurs and want to see us flourish and succeed. And I mean that on an individual level, as well as on a commercial level. All of my suppliers and vendors are all created here in Rhode Island.

Shakespeare wrote in Othello, “Our bodies are our gardens to the which our wills are gardeners,” and while it’s uncertain whether old Will squeezed in any asanas between sonnets, a new yoga studio led by a former Shakespearean actress has been tending to the wellbeing of a growing number of students since opening in Wickford in November. For Radiance Yoga founder Eliza Richmond, yoga isn’t just about community – though that is a central part of her practice – but also family. Richmond took her first yoga class with her mother, Julie Beth Andrews, when she was 15, as a way to offset some of the physical and mental strain of performing ballet. “Going to that class gave me most of the things I loved about ballet, but focused on healing instead of being critical,” she says. The stage still beckoned, however, so the Jamestown native pursued a theater career after graduating high school before deciding to transfer to Naropa University in Boulder, Colorado, the only Buddhist university in the

U.S. “The movement aspect of performing was what I liked best, so I decided I wanted to teach people how to move their bodies better,” she explains. Richmond worked at yoga studios and programs in Colorado and California, as well as the Kripalu wellness center in Massachusetts, for more than a decade, including running classes for people in hospice care and in recovery from addiction and PTSD. She recently returned to her home state with the goal of opening her own studio, and discovered what would become the home of Radiance Yoga on a random stroll through Wickford. The former location of the Mermaid’s Purl yarn shop on Brown Street has a large, open studio space with vintage hardwood floors, where Radiance Yoga runs 3-6 classes daily and workshops on yoga and wellness on the weekends, the latter organized by her mother (Richmond’s father, John, keeps the books). Richmond has nothing bad to say about “exercise yoga,” but wanted her studio to

have a more balanced focus on the physical and meditative aspects of the ancient Hindu healing art. “I wanted to create a space where all of my instructors and comfortable teaching from their own lineage, to let them lead classes in their own authentic style and voice,” says Richmond. “We’re unique in Rhode Island in a lot of ways. We’re not here to provide comprehensive services. We’re small on purpose because we want people to get to know each other and their teachers, not just pass through.” Richmond also sees Radiance Yoga as a way to give back to the community, whether that’s by helping clients become better partners in relationships and coworkers, direct giving through charity, or specialized programs aimed at communities in need. In addition to more typical flow and vinyasa classes, for example, the weekly schedule includes sessions dedicated to the specific needs of athletes and a sliding-scale Community Yin Yoga class, as well as sessions focusing on specific regions of the body, like hips, shoulders, and back. “We offer a lot of meditative and mindful options,” Richmond notes. “Even the most physically challenging classes, we’re still very committed to meditative practice and breath. There’s no point in our practice where you’re moving so fast you forget to breathe.” Richmond hopes that people who miss the community aspect and personal connections of taking a fitness-oriented yoga class at a gym will find a new home at Radiance Yoga. “You need to find a teacher who helps you be yourself and feel your best,” she says. “We can talk to you about your goals and what you love in a class, and connect you with a teacher who can help you with that.”

South of the Border Calaveras brings conscientious and authentic Mexican to Peace Dale Americans love Mexican food. There are close to 60,000 Mexican restaurants in the United States that generate close to $45 billion in annual sales. We can’t get enough tacos, guacamole, nachos, and burritos. New Mexican restaurants have been popping up around Rhode Island, and we’ve come a long way since the days of Casa Lupita (remember that spot in Warwick?). One of the newer spots, Calaveras, has generated some local buzz, and I couldn’t wait to give it a try. Calaveras is located on Kingstown Road in the trending town of Peace Dale. It’s within walking distance of Whaler’s Brewing and a quick drive from Sons of Liberty. The restaurant

is small and has only table seating for 14 and an additional five bar seats. It is adorned with Mexican touches, including several images of its namesake Calaveras (decorative depictions of human skulls). The restaurant does not have a liquor license, but it does have a BYOB policy with strict rules in that you still need an ID to partake (likely due to the close proximity to URI). The restaurant opened in 2017 by Julio Mendoza and his wife Iliana. This wasn’t their first restaurant endeavor – they already had a successful restaurant on Block Island. Last season, they had two shops open on BI – one in Old Harbor and one in New Harbor. Julio is from Mexico City and many of the recipes in

the restaurant come from growing up there or from visits back home to see his family. The Mendozas sought to bring the success of their Block Island operation to the mainland. They also work hard to make their food on the healthier side; they don’t fry many things and use as little oil in their cooking as possible. On a chilly Sunday afternoon, my friends and I visited Calaveras. On Sundays, they offer their standard menu all day and a brunch menu from 9am-2pm. While we perused the menu, I ordered a Hibiscus Iced Tea ($2.50) to start. They also had a variety of Mexican sodas and bottled water. In season, they make their own agua fresca. We sampled both the guacamole ($6)

Torta Milanesa Sandwich made with breaded chicken or beef, beans, lettuce, tomato, mayo, sour cream, chipotle, Oaxaca cheese, and avocado

and the chips and salsa verde ($3.50). Alongside the guacamole and salsa, there were freshly fried tortilla chips. The chips were good and deftly seasoned with salt. I preferred the salsa to the guacamole because the guacamole had a few too many off-season tomatoes for my liking, but the avocado was fresh and the bite of fresh lime juice really sang through. (I wish I had seen that you could add jalapeño to the guacamole. Readers: take note!) The salsa verde was really tasty. The zing of lime juice was the perfect addition to the tomatillo and cilantro flavors. We also tried the Street Corn ($6.50). Fresh corn on the cob was coated in mayonnaise, seasoned with lime and chile powder and topped with fresco cheese.

CUISINE: Mexican PRICES: $6-$20 ATMOSPHERE: Casual taqueria

One of the centerpieces of the menu is the “build your own” section. You can choose tacos, a burrito, a quesadilla, a tostada, a salad bowl, or a rice and bean bowl. Then you choose your filling, which includes their signature pulled chicken, carnitas (pork), veggies, or picadillo (ground beef and carrots) – plus more. After that, you add toppings (two are included for free) including pico de gallo, jalapeños, radishes, shredded cheese, sour cream, etc. My friend went with the classic Pulled Chicken Tacos ($8.50), commenting how nice it was to have freshly made tortillas and how they held up well to the pile of fillings. She really liked the pulled chicken and the shredded Oaxaca cheese. Another friend was seduced by the pulled chicken as well, but had hers in a burrito ($10.50). It was huge, and she enjoyed it (even with the unexciting lettuce and tomato she chose for her toppings). I’m a sucker for fish tacos and tend to

order them if they are available. Calaveras Fish Tacos ($10) were made with baked cod and topped with shredded lettuce, pico de gallo, and shredded Oaxaca cheese, and they were good. I especially liked how the cheese melted into the corn tortillas. They had a really good flavor. My other friend had been to the Calaveras in Block Island and liked the Chicken Tortilla Soup ($6.50) so much that she was compelled to order it again. On the cold day we were there, the soup looked enticing. What could be a boring soup of chicken and rice was made exciting by the addition of chipotle, diced red onion, avocado, and cilantro. It was spicy, but not overly so. We also shared a side dish of rice and beans ($4.50). The black beans were well seasoned, but the rice was lacking flavor. On the day we visited, the restaurant was busy both with people enjoying food in the dining room and those coming in for takeout. I noticed they have a nice patio area for the warmer months. The next time you are craving Mexican food definitely make it a point to visit this local, family-owned business. By the way, a Whaler’s Rise would be a good BYOB option, and you could walk to pick it up.

Touchdown!

How a retired NFL player and former aerospace engineer opened the first brewery in East Greenwich What does a football star do once he’s retired from the NFL? How do you follow up an eight-year career as a center for the New England Patriots, including two Super Bowl wins? If you’re Dan Koppen, you move to East Greenwich, meet a future business partner through your child’s kindergarten, and decide to establish the town’s first brewery. “I tried a number of other things that didn’t work out, or I wasn’t passionate about,” says Koppen, who opened LineSider Brewing Co. with Jeremy Ruff last November. “When you retire young, you try to find that next step. Koppen’s wife is a Cranston native, and they decided to make Rhode Island their post-football home. Koppen met Ruff a few years ago, because their children attended the same elementary school. Ruff was an aerospace engineer who had a fondness for home brewing, and the two started making beer together. LineSider Brewing Co. opened on Black Friday, and crowds poured through the

door. “It was crazy,” Koppen recalls. “We wanted to establish something in the community, and be part of it. It was a no-brainer. [This location] was our first choice. And it really blew away our expectations. ” The 4,200-square-foot facility is capable of brewing 1,000 barrels of beer every year. The tasting room is already buzzing on Fridays and Saturdays, partly thanks to food truck partnerships. LineSider will stay open for the Super Bowl on March 3, and Koppen and Ruff are considering keeping the tasting room open on Sundays thereafter. The bar has nine beers on tap, which will rotate regularly, and a limited number of cans are available for carryout. “We’re still young, and we’re still finding our balance,” says Koppen. “We want this to be a place where families are welcome. Beer drinkers are welcome. Non-beer drinkers are welcome. We want to put something on the menu for everybody.” East Greenwich, LinesiderBrewing.com

Tequila Canvas mixes spirits and art in Westerly About five years ago, Wendy Carr had an idea: She wanted to host a painting class at her restaurant, Amigos Tequila Y Taqueria, and help participants loosen up with Mexican spirits. The result was Tequila Canvas, a regular painting workshop for artists of all skill levels. The two-hour class is taught by local artist Jeanette Vertentes. While you paint, you can

select from a wide range of tequilas, or order a margarita from the bar. Class sizes are usually 20 to 30 people. And you don’t have to be Frida Kahlo to participate; all you need is a valid ID and a good attitude. Amigos hosts Tequila Canvas every month, along with weekly Taco Tuesday specials and recurring pop-up pasta nights. This month’s class is held February 28 at 6:30pm. Westerly, AmigosRI.com

The Surprise Pizzaiolo

Photography by Robert Isenberg

When Ron Ramieri started working at his brother-in-law’s bakery, he never imagined Colvitto’s would become a Narragansett institution

Life is a funny thing. Ron Ramieri grew up in Providence and earned an MBA in accounting from Bryant University. He was groomed to crunch numbers for the rest of his life. “I was fine with accounting,” he recalls, “but it just ended up being not the right thing.” Then he started helping out his brotherin-law, who owned a bakery in Cranston. Curiously, the bakery was named after Ramieri’s mother, whose maiden name was Calvitto. They worked closely together, and

in 1992, they took over a lackluster pizzeria in a Narragansett shopping plaza. Two years later, Ramieri and his family moved into town. And not long after that, Ramieri took over the South County location, renamed it “Colvitto’s” – after his daughter’s adorable mispronunciation – and today, nearly three decades later, his little shop is a pillar of the community. “To me, it was a no-brainer,” recalls Ramieri. The space that became Colvitto’s was

located right next to a Blockbuster rental store, which struck him as a perfect pairing. Meanwhile, his brother-in-law’s specialties were new to the area. “There was no bakery that sold what we sold. There was no cold pizza down here. There was no place that sold Italian bread.” Ramieri’s whole family has cycled through the business; before they even opened, his wife Jeanne was placing mysterious teasers in local publications. His sister Rosemary has served as general manager, and his children have all been active in the kitchen. Over the years, they have created a diverse menu of baked goods, from cannoli and sfogliatella to multigrain bread and Mediterranean orzo. Colvitto’s popularity spikes during Christmas and the Super Bowl, and a tidal wave of customers flows through the restaurant every summer. Ramieri is proud of his “cold pizza” strips, which are portable and beach-ready, plus the many calzones and savory pies that await the hungry tourist. Yet the most legendary dish is the party pizza, a sprawling rectangle of homemade sauce and dough. After so many years in town, Ramieri has seen an entire generation of people come through his establishment, and he’s been able to sponsor local organizations, particularly the local Lions Club. Ramieri is talkative and upbeat, and he’s quick to compliment his youngest employees, who labor dutifully all through the high season. It’s hard to imagine him slumped over a calculator, tabulating accounts; here in the Colvitto’s dining room, waving to familiar customers, Ramieri is in his element. “The community’s obviously been good to us, too,” he says with a chuckle. “I mean, we’re still here.”

South County Scenes Discovery Bay

Winter is the best time to walk the beaches of South County. Not only are the beaches so serene and peaceful, but you can discover the most interesting natural things washing up along the shore, like this intricate channeled whelk egg case.
