Twenty-nine acres of the campus now comprise the URI Historic District
Recognizing Rhody History URI’s campus earns a spot on the national list of historic landmarks In January, URI’s main campus was officially recognized as a historic district by the National Park Service. Taking up approximately 29 acres, the new University of Rhode Island Historic District contains 17 buildings and structures that span the university’s 130-year history. Among the buildings included in the district is The Watson Farmhouse, the oldest structure on campus. Originally built around 1796, it was purchased by URI in 1888 and converted into a women’s dormitory. Another is the Robert L. Carothers Library, which was originally spread across seven on-campus locations upon its founding in
1892, before moving to its current location in 1964. The district also includes monuments like the Old Ben Butler Civil War cannon and the WWI Memorial Gateway, built in 1928 to honor the 23 URI students who lost their lives during the war. “This was a major milestone for URI,” says J. Vernon Wyman, a URI graduate and current Assistant Vice President of Business Services, who worked with the Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage commission to nominate URI for the National Register. “These buildings tell a compelling story.” Kingston, URI.edu –Anna Plouffe

Get Dramatic Emerging talent takes the stage in Contemporary Theater Company’s Springboard Season
The final shows of the season include artistic manifestos, an homage to film noir, and post-WWII absurdism
This month, Contemporary Theater Company is staging the last three shows of its Springboard Season lineup. The annual program highlights works created by upand-coming local playwrights and directors looking to experiment with their craft

by staging performances that are inspiring, intimidating, and utterly fascinating. The final three shows will all vary in subject and style, but all share a common thread in allowing the writers, directors, and performers to explore their artistic passions and
excite audiences. Curated by Kelly Robertson, the performances in Hear Me Roar will have real local artists acknowledging their inspirations and fears by sharing their personal manifestos. For some of the actors, musicians,

one level living in town visual artists, jugglers, and designers involved, the March 2 performance will be their first time on stage. Audiences will not only hear these written manifestos, but also see the artists’ creative journeys and get a personal glimpse into the minds of different artists and their mediums and, with that, deeper insight into our own desires and intentions to create. On March 9 and 16, The Big Chase pays homage to the classic film noir, but incorporates a modern twist by solving the who-done-it through a full-length improvisational play directed by Neal Leaheey. One performer will take on the role of Private Detective each night, and must figure out the identity of a dangerous criminal who is hiding among the rest of the cast. Traditional gender roles are turned on their sides as performers improvise their characters and slowly reveal their involvements within this thrilling mystery. As the Private Detective gradually uncovers more about the case and how the other performers play into it, so does the audience. Insect, written by aspiring playwright Claudia Bach with first-time direction by Ryan Sekac, is a one-act absurdist play set in post-World War II England going up on March 30 and 31. Audiences follow aging British women Hattie and Cleo as they search for answers after Hattie is bitten by an unidentifiable bug. Looking to find out what the bite will do, Hattie and Cleo journey through their pasts and start to question what it means to live with the limited time we are all given. The well-being of senior dogs isn’t at the top of a lot of prospective pet owners’ minds, but the sad fact remains that older animals are often overlooked in shelters. Kristen and Marc Peralta, owners of the
nonprofit animal retirement and hospice home Vintage Pet Rescue in North Kingstown, are doing their part to change that. “A few years ago, we took in a little Maltese as a hospice dog,” Kristen recounts.
Escape the Ordinary “She was a little old lady that we named Rue. We only expected her to live for a few months, but she really started thriving in our house. We had her for a year and a half and when she passed we adopted another senior in her memory.” Since then, the pair has worked closely with shelters across the state and throughout New England to offer a comfortable life for dogs in their twilight years. The dogs are given a full checkup from a vet to address any health concerns, plenty of cage-free space in a loving home to wander, and stylish new sweaters: “Our elderly pups need to be cozy!” They also get kitschy beds made from flea market finds like old TVs and suitcases that the Peraltas have repurposed. “We love finding old items and turning them into something that can still be used, so I try to repurpose items as much as possible.” Not all of the residents of Vintage Pet Rescue come from shelters. Some come from loving homes that, for one reason or another, can no longer give them the special care and attention they need. “It is a very difficult decision for owners to make, but we try to help them through the process as much as possible,” Kristen says. “Sometimes we can offer suggestions that will allow them to keep their dogs. For the dogs that do end up coming to Vintage Pet Rescue, we allow the previous owners to come visit.” It’s hard work, but for the Peraltas the joy of having these animals in their lives is worth the pain of losing them. And for the owners and shelters who give their dogs over to Vintage Pet Rescue, there’s an immeasurable comfort in knowing that they’ll be cared for. “We just want to make sure that their last months or years are comfortable and filled with love,” says Kristen. Described as “an ongoing series of cultural happenings,” the Westerly Sound Concert Series is creating the platform for both big and small acts to share the stage in South County, including at The Knickerbocker
Music Center in Westerly. Of course, the Knick is no stranger to the live music scene. Since 1933, the storied music venue has hosted thousands of acts, becoming, a warm wooden haven for folk,
AL LN EW ! jazz, and blues lovers alike. Mark Connolly, the Knick’s executive director, has seen this deep appreciation for live arts grow for generations: “As times changed, the music at the Knick has evolved as well,” he says. And to continue the nearly century-old legacy, Connolly explains, the venue “needed to offer music from a wide variety of genres to attract a younger audience, while still offering the blues.” Sean Spellman, curator of the Westerly Sound Concert Series, had the same vision when he began to imagine musical and cultural events being hosted throughout Southern Rhode Island. Between the club’s intimate setting and its longstanding reputation for the arts, there was no doubt that The Knickerbocker would be the perfect place to start. Spellman, a musician himself, curated the music series to “increase the amount of traveling bands/ musicians that come through the club” and to push these artistic boundaries in and around Westerly. “The Westerly Sound music series helps us continue to offer a wider range of music, bringing in artists that have never played at the club and their fans that will follow,” Connolly says. The series, he hopes, will expose those in the community to acts big and small that they may never have heard of, or would never have the opportunity to see in such an intimate setting. The Knickerbocker Music Center will be hosting Providence’s own Horse Eyed Men on March 8 and Brooklyn songstress Swimming Bell with Drew Victor on March 29. Going forward, the Westerly Sound Concert Series will bring the raw energy of Spirit Family Reunion (April 14) and acts touring nationally and internationally, including Michael Nau (April 25) and Stelth Ulvang from The Lumineers (May 11). “It’s very cool to have folks from larger bands play in the Knickerbocker,” Spellman says. Festivals and parades around the world make the darkest, shortest days of the year easier to get through. China, for example, celebrates with the Lantern Festival: thousands of lanterns of different shapes and sizes are lit and set adrift in the sky and water, some with riddles written on them, some with wishes folded inside them, and some shaped to symbolize family and well-being. Jamestown Art Center (JAC) has created its own tradition to light up the darkest nights: the Lantern Workshop, Parade, and Festival, on March 2. The parade was started by the organization Concrete Couch, which works with kids and community groups to create public art; it pitched a lantern spectacular to JAC inspired by Asian and Chinese New Year celebrations and similar solstice festivals in
England. Three workshops for both kids and adults are offered during the week of the festival, using translucent materials to create lanterns of all shapes and sizes and run by multimedia artist Susie Mathews and ceramics studio manager Jon Baylor. “For us, it’s a great community-building activity involving creations of projects in groups and culminating around a celebration where those creations are ‘activated’,” says Seamus Hames, JAC’s arts education coordinator. On parade day, families will walk down Narragansett Ave with their beautifully glowing lanterns lighting up the sky. After the parade, the festival begins back at the JAC with food and refreshments. The lanterns will shine together, a celebration of the strength of the community through the arts. Jamestown, JamestownArtCenter.org –Katerina Batchelder

On January 20, thousands of marchers gathered at the State House to mark the one-year anniversary of the Women’s March on Washington. Evoking issues from immigration and the environment to reproductive rights and health care, people of all ages converged on the State House lawn and steps to “re-commit,” according to the RI Women’s March site, to a world in which “the human rights and dignity of each person is protected and our planet is safe from destruction.” RIWomensMarch.com -Photography by Tony Pacitti

16
ways for kids to stay active, creative, and wild in South County
by Robert Isenberg
1 Sip Your Way Back in Time
Once, the soda fountain was also a fountain of youth. On every Main Street, there was a pharmacy with a soda fountain attracting crowds of kids. Green Line Apothecary is modeled on that vintage vision. “Going to the pharmacy is everyone’s least favorite thing to do,” says Christina Procaccianti, owner and head pharmacist. “We are trying to do it a much more fun way.” The Wakefield location is a functional pharmacy, where you can order meds and flu shots. But unlike the local Walgreens, Green Line has the ice cream-topped soft drinks of yesteryear, and the pump-and-jerk taps are restored 1940s originals. Sweeter yet: Procaccianti concocted the sodas herself, and every shake and float is mixed with all-natural ingredients. The venue is a hit with her three daughters. “We do put them to work a little bit,” says Procaccianti with a laugh. “They have to earn their free ice cream.” Wakefield, GreenlineApothecary.com SORhodeIsland.com • March 2018

2 Get Hands-On With Art
No well-rounded childhood is complete without sculpting a vessel out of clay, coating it in glaze, and firing it up in the kiln. The Kids’ Pottery class is the perfect studio for learning basic ceramics, and children can learn at their own pace in a monthlong crash course. The Jamestown Art Center is packed with youth-oriented workshops, and some cater to kids as young as three. This bright and multifaceted facility offers instruction in everything from painting to digital photography, and some classes let entire families join in. Check out the April calendar for a series of specialized “vacation camps.” Jamestown, JamestownArtsCenter.org
Before they master the intricacies of key signatures and major scales, children like to sing songs and make noise. Offered by the Chorus of Westerly, the Music & Movement Program is designed to introduce kids four to six years old to the magic of instruments and dance. Once they’ve experimented with sound and rhythm, young singers can add their voices to Westerly’s acclaimed chorus. There’s an audition, but kids don’t have to be prodigies; the choir directors just want to assess their skill level. Westerly, ChorusOfWesterly.com
4 Solve Mysterious Mysteries
You have 60 minutes to infiltrate the mob. Will you be the youngest detective ever to go undercover and get out alive? You have stiff competition: one RI Riddle Room upstart was seven years old. A cult phenomenon across the country, this fully interactive game requires a group of players to problem-solve their way out of a room. The Riddle Room in East Greenwich is designed for adults, but children under 18 can join with a waiver, and children under 14 can test their skills with adult supervision. 5 Find Your Inner Crafter
You don’t often get to do crafting with an expert in Lego robotics. But Lynn Murphy is no ordinary crafter: the East Greenwich-based artisan went to New England Tech for software engineering, and she later became a local TV personality with her program Time to Design. When she’s not sewing, quilting, or painting, Murphy is teaching area students how to build and program robots. Craftersnight started as a painting night during the Main Street Stroll, but Murphy’s events have become a touchstone of the East Greenwich arts scene. Murphy hosts crafty birthday parties and arts-oriented summer camps, plus individual lessons and events for adults. East Greenwich, CraftersNight.com

3 Sing it Loud
6 Get Dramatic
When it comes to live theater, there are all kinds of things you can do onstage: comedy, drama, improvisation, even poetry. Your child can learn all these forms at Wakefield’s Contemporary Theatre Company. The company is best known for its adult productions, like the forthcoming Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead in April, but the organization also hosts a variety of after-school classes, including a Saturday morning drama club, a juggling workshop, and even a Shakespeare Summer Camp for grade schoolers. Wakefield, ContemporaryTheaterCompany.com
7 Shake Hands With Marine Life
Everybody loves seals, and the seal-watching tour is just one of the activities that has made Save the Bay such a beloved organization. The Newport headquarters are well trafficked, but science-minded kids will also enjoy the Save the Bay South Coast Center, where they can touch native marine life, hear stories, and use crafting materials to create their own undersea creatures. Westerly, SaveBay.org/SouthCoastCenter
8 Explore the Deep Blue Sea
Photography by Stacey Doyle
Birthday parties are so much more fun when you get to pet a shark. This is one of the perks of Biomes, New England’s only private facility dedicated to marine education: you can rent the entire place and invite 20 young partygoers. If your child has an affection for mollusks and crustaceans, there’s no better way to celebrate a new year than a hands-on tour of the aquaria, where children can caress horseshoe crabs to their hearts’ content. If that sounds a bit epic for your little one, you don’t have to do the full 20,000 leagues – you can just tell Biomes you’re coming during regular hours with a pint-sized posse and get $1 off each ticket. Finally, for toddlers too small to appreciate the full breadth of undersea ecology, there’s Ruby’s Play Center, an aqua-themed rec room. North Kingstown, BiomesCenter.com
9 Act Out… in a Good Way
When the “theater bug” bites, it bites hard. For 30 years, the Rhode Island Youth Theatre has introduced local children to acting and stagecraft, producing over 200 shows and training more than 12,000 pupils. What began as a summer camp called Fantasy Works Youth Theatre is now a pillar of Rhode Island’s arts education scene: the Youth Theatre hosts after-school programs, improv classes, a summer musical series, and the “Young PlayRIYTs Mentoring Network” for fledgling dramatists. Whether your child wants to belt out the songs of Les Misérables or play prop master for The Outcast of Sherwood Forest, RIYT has set the stage. Saunderstown, RIYT.org
10 Take Flight
11 Do a Little Bit of Everything
See if this is familiar: you walk into your child’s preschool, you see a room overflowing with toys and games, and you think, “Why can’t my kid just hang out here all the time?” Enter KidZone, a large indoor playground with hobby horses, inflatable slides, and everything in between. Kids can migrate from one “play station” to the next, and while some may prefer hurling basketballs and high-octane games of tag, others can embrace stuffed animals or quietly paint at the crafting table. Established by veteran pre-K teacher Heather Wyman Wall, KidZone is a warm indoor space for kids up to seven years old. (Note the new location at Hunts River Commons, 80 Frenchtown Road.) North Kingstown, KidZoneRI.Vpweb.com

12 Unleash Your Inner Spider-Man
Climbing walls were originally designed for beefy adults, but preteens and teens are often natural climbers, thanks to their featherweight physiques. And what about toddlers? Once a month, Rock Spot in Peace Dale hosts an intro session for teeny, tiny climbers – because if they’re old enough to walk, they’re old enough to find handholds on a three-foot-tall platform. Other kids’ classes are neatly divided into age groups, such as the Jelly Beans (four to six years old), Stone Runners (six to eight), Super Stone Runners (nine to 12), and Teen Climb (13 and up). With a one-to-four instructor ratio, young alpinists receive close instruction in safe climbing and belay techniques, building their skills from the ground up. Peace Dale, PeaceDale.RockSpotClimbing.com
Photography by Kendall Pavan St. Laurent
Aerial performance is like anti-gravity gymnastics: artists climb long silk sheets, then wrap themselves in the fabric, stretching and posing with the dexterity of contortionists. But most able-bodied people can learn to do aerials, thanks to studios like Arielle Extreme. Seasoned coaches train their protégés in a voluminous gym, and aerial novices levitate above a mat-cushioned floor. All age groups are welcome, and children as young as six have suspended themselves from the Aerial Arts ceiling. Youth classes generally take place in the evenings, but kids can also sign up for private lessons. East Greenwich, ArielleArts.com
13 Lace Up and Skate
Most winter sports take place during, well, winter. But ice skating is a year-round activity, thanks to the South County Skating School at the Boss Arena. Outfitted with a helmet and a trained instructor, young skaters can learn to glide and twirl during hour-long, eight-week courses. The curriculum is designed for ages four and up, including adults. Kingston, BossIceArena.com
14 Bust Out Gnarly Tricks
Woodland BMX is home to a manicured BMX track, a family-friendly atmosphere, and formal racing events on a USABMX-sanctioned course. The Woodland BMX Parents Org is a registered nonprofit, whose purpose is to coach and equip bicyclists of all ages. Adults are welcome to coast the berms, but the closely monitored track is ideally suited for youngsters with quick reflexes and energy to burn. Not sure where to start? The First 10 Weeks Program is a specially designed clinic for training young riders in the art of BMX. West Greenwich, WoodlandBMX.com
15 Gaze Into Infinity and Beyond
Every Friday night, visitors arrive at the Frosty Drew Observatory in Ninigret Park, where they take a gander at the cosmos through the facility’s many high-powered telescopes. Far from big-city light pollution, young scientists can browse the millions of astral bodies that speckle a clear sky. During the summer, kids can also enroll in Nature Week, an outdoor bonanza of bird-watching, aquarium-building, flower-pressing, and the launching of miniature rockets, all hosted by the Frosty Drew Nature Center. Charlestown, FrostyDrew.org
Beginners’ Bowling Bowling might be the perfect cold-weather game: it’s indoors, it’s mildly physical, and you’re encouraged to snack the whole time. South County has three bowling alleys, and they’re positioned in three corners of the region, so the drive is never that far. Each venue is primarily designed for adults, but children are always welcome, and some times are specially
16
geared toward kids.
Throw a Hole in One
A “disc” usually costs about $10 at your local sporting goods store – and the rest of disc golf is basically free. Also known as “Frolf,” this game is played exactly like golf, except that the “ball” is a frisbee and the “hole” is a free-standing metal basket with chains. The Ninigret Park Disc Golf Course is South County’s singular place to play, with 18 different holes and plenty of sylvan scenery. This game is an economical mix of strategy and outdoor play, and kids are so focused on winning that they don’t realize they’ve walked more than 5,000 feet! Charlestown, Facebook: Ninigret Disc Golf
Up north, you’ll find Kingstown Bowl (KBowl.com), which specializes in kids’ birthday parties. Old Mountain Lanes (OldMountainLanesRI.com) also hosts kids’ parties in Wakefield, and there’s a roomful of arcade games as well, catering to all ages. Finally, the young’uns can join the Saturday Kids’ Club at Alley Katz (AlleyKatzRI.com) in Westerly, and the whole family can celebrate the coming weekend at the Friday Fun Club.

Big City Fun Beyond South County: can’t-miss attractions in Providence
Have Fun in Bumper to Bumper Traffic
Photography by Tony Pacitti
The Providence Rink at the Alex and Ani City Center recently unveiled its brand-new bumper cars. The 16 brightly colored cars – the first on an outdoor rink in the country, BTW – take over half of the rink Mondays through Fridays and Saturday nights. And don’t worry, they’ll still be around after the ice has melted for the season. Downtown, TheProvidenceRink.com
See a BIG screen Movie
Take to the Sky
Watching a movie at the IMAX Theater is an immersive, in-your-face-andears experience like no other. The theater features a weekly rotation of what’s playing next door at Providence Place Cinemas, as well as the occasional made-for-IMAX film. A Wrinkle In Time, the sci-fi Disney movie your kids have been talking about for months, premieres this month. Whether or not Oprah will officially announce her plan to run for president during the film is TBD. Providence Place Mall, ShowcaseCinemas.com
If cabin fever is starting to kick in, why not take the kids someplace where they can literally bounce off the walls? Sky Zone Providence takes the thrill of bouncing on a trampoline to new heights by creating a space dedicated to the art of bouncing. Land big air jumps safely into a foam pit, score high-flying slam dunks, monkey across the wobbly sky ladder, and more with high-energy games and stunts for all ages. East Providence, SkyZone.com

Discover Wildlife Some of the stars at Roger Williams Park Zoo might not like the cold, but others love it. Think snow leopards, red pandas, red wolves, and pronghorns. The chillier months give guests a chance to see these curious critters in their element, but that doesn’t mean you won’t run into the zoo’s regulars – no one here goes south for the winter, but the zoo does make sure that its more tropical residents are kept nice and cozy. Free for kids 1 and under, $13 for kids 2–12, $18 for adults. Elmwood Avenue, RWPZoo.org
Visit a World-Class Museum Picasso, Warhol, Monet, Manet, and Van Gogh are just five of the thousands of notable artists represented at the RISD Museum. This year marks the ten-year anniversary of the museum’s opening of the Chase Center, the game-changing configuration that connected the institution’s four buildings with a glass bridge and a downtown-facing entrance. With over 100,000 works of art ranging from ancient artifacts to contemporary paintings in its main collection, the sprawling galleries are sure to keep you and your brood inspired for hours. Free for kids 18 and younger, $15 per adult. North Main Street, RISDMuseum.org
Dress Your Family in Black and Gold First and foremost, a Providence Bruins game is a surefire way to catch some great hockey and see the future stars of the NHL. But it’s not all face-offs and hat tricks. Theme nights add a little extra fun to a family’s time at the Dunk, with cool giveaways and appearances from the Ninja Turtles in March. Whether you’re coming for the hockey or the free thundersticks, you’re sure to leave fe eling like a winner. Family combo tickets available. Downtown, ProvidenceBruins.com
Make Gaming a Reality Your children are the center of your universe, but sometimes you need a break from reality. Base Station VR Lounge, Rhode Island’s first virtual reality arcade, provides a quick and pretty awesome escape. Here’s how it works: select a kid-appropriate game from the catalog, grab a headset, and head to a station that can accommodate up to four players. In an instant, you are all transported to the alternate universe of your choice. Fear not, the rule of parental law still applies in a virtual world. Thayer Street, BaseStationVR.com

When talking with Joanne it is easy to see how much she cares about her clients and how committed she is to helping them take control of their financial future. “I am passionate about helping others become financially empowered and make smart well-informed decisions about their money, especially women,” she says. Joanne’s clientele include individuals, couples, professors, doctors and small business owners, but many of her clients are women who have become responsible for their financial future after experiencing divorce, death of a loved one or inheritance of significant wealth. Joanne knows from personal experience how important it is to be involved in your finances, since Joanne’s mother became a widow when her father died unexpectedly at 45. Joanne saw firsthand the emotional and financial challenges her mother faced, which is why she requires that both spouses participate in their meetings. Joanne strives to ensure that if something happens to one of them, the other will be better prepared to handle their financial affairs on their own. “Of course I will be there for them, to guide them and advocate for them,” she says, “helping them navigate through the overwhelming paperwork and helping them preserve their wealth so that they can live a comfortable lifestyle.” Years ago, she helped her sister as she was going through a divorce after over 20 years of marriage, collaborating with the attorney and CPA to help ensure her sister could continue to live the lifestyle she envisioned. She realized then that many women needed help with managing the divorce process and taking

REBECCA TRAXLER Owner
Rebecca Traxler wants homeowners to fall in love with their homes. “We work so hard to live where we do. My goal is to make people feel inspired in their own homes,” she says. Inspiration comes easy at Ocean Tile Gallery, the beautiful designer showroom Rebecca opened last summer in Westerly. Featuring the latest trends and materials, the incredible 3,000 square foot storefront showcases a seemingly endless collection of tile, flooring, and countertops. “The feedback has been terrific,” Rebecca says. “I love when customers walk in and are amazed by the selection here, and tell me how ‘beautiful’ the space is. That’s exactly what I was trying to achieve with Ocean Tile Gallery.” Rebecca began her impressive career Photography by Savannah Barkley

A self-described “people person,” Rebecca spend nearly two decades in leadership roles in the hospitality business when an opportunity to work in a flooring company came her way. “I jumped at that opportunity,” she says. “I instantly knew that the construction and building industry was for me.” Mixing a love of working with people with a passion for design, Rebecca quickly became enthralled with the highly-creative field. “I especially love how versatile tile can be, and how creative you can get with it.” She opened her first business, Eastern
Connecticut and into Rhode Island. “I began getting more and more inquiries from RI, especially from builders who knew of my work,” she says. When the perfect spot in the heart of Westerly became available in 2017, Rebecca once again took the leap. “I’m committed to community, both as a small business owner and a nearby resident,” she says, adding that she recently joined the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce. “Independently-owned businesses help to

I’m looking forward to developing more relationships with other like-minded businesses.” Staying ahead of industry trends has been one of the keys to her continued success. From attending trade shows to building relationships with local building and remodeling professionals, Rebecca prides herself for staying informed in the flooring industry. “Education is so important, especially in an industry that is always innovating with new ways to use materials,” she says, adding that educating her clients is also a priority. “I value the meaningful relationships I have with my clients, and empowering them to make the right decisions is important to me.” A creative problem solver, Rebecca aims to “marry the people with their house” by taking the time to really get know her customers’ design goals and needs. “I really do look to create a harmonious union between people and homes by finding the right design that matches their lifestyle,” she says. Her goal is to always give the client what they want, regardless of budget. “That’s where I really get creative,” she says. “I always feel like I’m leaving my artwork behind in someone’s home, but at the end of the day it’s their home. I’m committed to making their visions come true.” As she approaches the one-year anniversary of Ocean Tile Gallery’s opening, Rebecca reflects on the determination it took to get here. “I’m proud to have built this company from the ground up, and to have done it on my own,” she says. “The building and construction industry has been predominantly owned and run by men. It’s inspiring to know that I have had a part in changing that.” To that end, Rebecca continues to encourage women to pursue leadership roles in the construction and building profession. “Women are making more of the home-related decisions in their houses, and I’ve found that they are quicker to trust another woman when it comes to aesthetics, budgets and more.” With an unmatched work ethic and a relentless desire to improve how people live in their own homes, Rebecca continues to pave her own path of success.

from URI, and, she says, “a good mix of color and texture is what drives most of my designs.” Being a self-proclaimed color junkie, she loves the process of color placement and coordination. Her training in the psychology of color is a great asset to her ability to match and pair
colors for any given use. Kim is not only able to choose shades, but is always cognizant of color hue, value and saturation, and how colors and textures combine for the greatest effect. The use of textures such as grasscloth wallpaper, heavily woven linens or silks with deep sheens, combined with a mix of patterns, make Kim’s designs visually appealing. Her attention to detail and the mixing of fabrics make each design unique and special. Her concept-to-use design packages include everything from furniture selections and room layouts to accessories, artwork and the final touches that make a space feel “done.” Kim’s work is so well regarded that she has had several projects published, and has won awards from trade shows and magazines both locally and nationally. “Design comes with natural ease to me, and has since I was a child,” she says. Kim runs her business out of her home studio in West Greenwich, but works with clients all over Rhode Island, MA, CT and FL. Currently, she’s working on several projects, some of which are large scale. People often assume that you should only call in design help when doing a major home
overhaul, but Kim often works with clients who are just looking to refresh one room, or even one part of a room, and believes that it’s her job to alleviate stress for her clients. “I like to make people comfortable working with a designer,” she says. “I’m happy to work with anyone who feels the need for help with a design project. I love large comprehensive projects, but smaller projects are fun, too.” For Kim, one of the best parts about living and working in Rhode Island is being able to work on historic buildings. “I enjoy working with all different types of people who have different tastes, budgets and styles of living,” she says, “But I’m most proud of my work on historical properties. I love being part of the further years in homes that have such long pasts and histories.”

Inspiration came easy for business partners Pamela Lutes and Jennifer Serafin, co-owners of Inspire Medical Spa and Wellness. “We both love to make people happy, to make them feel their very best,” Jennifer says. “We opened our spa on Valentine’s Day four years ago. From the very first day, we have been determined to build a business and a sense of community from the heart,” she says. Inspire Medical Spa offers a diverse selection of specialized, state-of-the-art cosmetic treatments and therapeutic spa services. The professional staff includes a plastic surgeon, a surgical nurse, licensed estheticians, and massage therapists. “We are a team of highly-trained specialists with extensive experience in injections, laser, facials, micro-channeling, massage, and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma),” says Pamela. “Our top priority is to offer safe and highly-effective treatments.” The Inspire experience starts with a consultation at their welcoming Narragansett office. Described as personable and comforting, the Inspire team builds a close and honest relationship with each new and returning client. “You’re warmly welcomed by a group of women that are caring, compassionate, and knowledgeable industry specialists,” Pamela says. “We really get to know individuals on a personal, yet professional level. The more we know our clients’ wants and needs, the better we can treat them,” adds Jennifer. “We are quite proud of

the results we produce for our clients,” says Jennifer, adding that the best compliment the spa receives is its 80 percent referral rate. The spa team collaborates together to create personalized, one-of-a-kind care plans for each person to ensure their unique needs and desired outcomes are met. “Our approach is uniquely holistic,” says Pamela. “Our services are often very personal to the client. We always aim to not only meet their expectations, but to exceed them.” Working closely within the spa, the top-notch staff coordinates services with optimal results in mind. “Our team synergistically works together to deliver the highest level of customer service and results,” says Jennifer. “We are each so diverse in our specialties, but as a team we are truly remarkable.” In addition to their team of highly-trained specialists, Pamela and Jennifer both offer a wealth of industry leadership to the spa. Pamela, a RN and BSN with expert experience with injections and dermal fillers, is currently pursuing an Advanced Practical Nursing degree. Jennifer is a Laser Specialist certified in Laser Safety and the biophysics of Laser Application, and uses innovative broadband light (BBL) energy to treat a wide range of dermal issues. Katie Burke, Spa Manager, has taught many of the estheticians in the state of Rhode Island and was formerly the Educational Manager at Sephora. “Education is very important to us, and we
are all committed to staying ahead of industry trends,” Jennifer says. “We are always on top of the latest techniques, and are continually adding new, advanced services to our already expansive menu.” In addition to the recently added micro-channeling and the next generation PRP, Inspire Medical Spa will be offering the most advanced skin tightening, fat removal, and feminine rejuvenation treatments this spring. “We work tirelessly to bring the very best cosmetic and therapeutic solutions for our clients,” Pamela says. “It’s beyond rewarding to make people feel better about their appearance and to help improve their confidence.” Having celebrated their fourth year in business last month, Pamela and Jennifer take enormous pride in the continued support and trust of their loyal clients. “Our clients are just as passionate as we are, and we are so thankful for that. We’re honored to have a positive impact in their lives,” says Jennifer. Pamela agrees, adding that “We are a group of passionate women that are motivated by the empowerment of other women. It’s an inspiring environment I’m proud to be a part of.”

KATIE MCDONALD Self-Care Strategist You know the feeling: when something isn’t exactly right, but you can’t put your finger on what’s wrong. Katie McDonald has made a career of helping people find their happier, healthier path in life through bnourished, her holistic wellness coaching business. “I have the honor of partnering with clients who know they need to make changes in their daily habits,” Katie says. “Sometimes it’s a tweak, sometimes a major overhaul. Either way, their lives are no longer working in ways that support their dreams and wellbeing.” At bnourished, Katie works one-on-one with clients on a journey of self-discovery, assessing a person’s habits around food, thinking and time management. “We align daily habits with the lives they say they want, but have not been able to create on their own,” she says. “We close the gap between what we know we need to be doing to be at our best and what we are doing in our daily lives.” The result is different per person, depending on what they’re looking to improve - better life/work balance, better health, better sleep, a better mental outlook - but the common theme is a boosted sense of wellness. “Clients know I have their backs as the keeper of a vibrant, healthy and intentional life,” Katie says. “I am a passionate, resourceful, practical and deeply committed advocate for their wellbeing.” Katie knows the process works because she was her own first client. “For decades, I devoted myself to my career, taking care of business but not taking care of myself,” she says. The cumulative stress added up, and resulted in her being diagnosed with serious illnesses. “I got away with self-neglect until I could not get away with it any longer. The stress, sugar addiction, depression, anxiety, irritable bowel, ulcerative colitis, and insomnia that nearly broke me became the very catalysts for change I desperately needed.” All of the energy she devoted to work became the energy she poured into her recovery. Now, she’s a certified holistic health coach and raw food chef and

Katie is also a Bach Flower Practitioner, a graduate of Leadership Rhode Island and a frequent guest speaker at businesses, helping cultivate wellbeing and balance in work environments. “I help empower people to remember that self care is a vehicle for more creative, more focused, and effective work,” she says.
Clients she’s worked with rave about Katie’s ability to help them balance their lives, and how effective and transformative the work they do together is. People come in knowing they need to make changes, but not knowing how - or, at least, how to sustain positive change in the midst of a hectic life. “People leave confident, informed, resilient, intentional,” Katie says. “They are set free from the shackles of inadequate nutrition, destructively mean spirited self-talk, and suffocatingly chaotic calendars.” Katie is in the process of launching a daily planner on her website that helps people manage their time more effectively. “I’m crafting this with the best research in productivity and time tested strategies for successful life mastery in mind,” she says. Her website also has resources for intentional living that are accessible to everyone, not just clients. The initial 30 minute consultation is free. “Seeking support and craving accountability are not signs of weakness,” Katie says. “In fact, only the brave and brilliant understand that the only life worth living is the examined one. Small shifts in daily habits lead to dramatic transformation.”

explains. “We take our time to put our patients’ minds at ease and anticipate their needs, and we follow up with all of our patients the next day to ensure their expectations were met.” Facial Aesthetics Center offers the kind of treatments that make a difference, but that don’t look overdone. “My approach has always been to have my patients look more refreshed,” Dr. Levy clarifies. “I don’t want anyone to know that my patient had anything done. If someone asks ‘who does your Botox’, I haven’t done my job.” In addition to Botox and Dysport, the Facial Aesthetics Center offers extensive options to obtain that “refreshed” look. Dr. Levy is one of the top injectors of Sculptra in New England; she and her staff utilize facial fillers such as Juvederm and Restylane, as well as laser resurfacing treatments and intensive facials, to help heal the skin, not just pamper it. “We’ve developed different techniques for minimal bruising and minimal discomfort,” she explains. “I’m coming into this field as a microsurgeon. Everything that I do has to be very precise. Our fillers are almost exclusively injected with mirocannulas instead of needles, which significantly reduces discomfort and recovery time.” All of the staff receives treatments that the practice offers, so that they can give realistic expectations to patients, and share their personal experiences. “I’ve always loved Dr. Levy’s natural-looking Botox and filler technique, but my new favorite treatment is Amy’s PRP,” Maria adds. The FAC staff also understands that undertaking these kinds of treatments, though they have excellent results, can be nerve wracking, especially for new patients. “The first time I had an aggressive laser, I was so nervous,” Dr. Levy says, laughing. “I had it done on a Friday afternoon, and although I thought I looked quite flushed the next morning at my son’s hockey practice, no one noticed!” And the final result of brighter, smoother skin, makes a world of difference in how a person looks and feels.

Since Dr. Sarah Levy opened Facial Aesthetics Center of RI in 2010, she has quietly established herself as one of the state’s leaders in non-invasive aesthetic procedures. An eye surgeon, a professor at Brown University, and a national trainer for injecting fillers, Botox and Dysport, Dr. Levy is meticulous about ensuring that her treatments are safe, have minimal downtime, and that her patients always look refreshed, but never “done.” When she hired office manager Maria Disimone shortly after opening, the two worked diligently to generate a huge word of mouth following. Since then, Facial Aesthetics Center has grown steadily, and now has three injectors and three medical aestheticians, all who are dedicated to the same original vision of providing optimal patient experience and care. That vision is working. Early this year, the East Greenwich office of Facial Aesthetics Center underwent a massive expansion, growing from three treatment rooms to seven, and adding a large and private waiting room, with a separate reception area, so patients can have as much privacy as they’d like. In addition, the practice was selected to be one of the national SkinCeuticals Advanced Clinical Flagship Offices. “They’re L’Oreal’s medical skincare division,” Dr. Levy explains. “Each flagship is led by a physician, and allows our patients access to the best skin care offered by SkinCeuticals and L’Oreal.” The Facial Aesthetics Center will be the only flagship in all of Rhode Island, as well as parts of Massachusetts and Connecticut. “Our medical aestheticians have always loved the line,” Dr. Levy remarks, and “our patients love it” as well. The practice is planning a spectacular launch party this spring. The practice’s expansion also means more providers on their talented team, Dr. Levy confirms. “Every person on our team comes with many years of experience,” Maria Disimone says. Dr. Helen Livson completed a three-year fellowship at Harvard, and is a member of the American Academy of Facial Aesthetics. She specializes in shaping the perfect lip as well as contouring the lower face. Amy Donaldson, RN, came from a plastic surgery practice in Boston, and has extensive experience with Platelet Rich Plasma (also known as the “vampire facial”), hair restoration, as well as Botox and facial fillers. Licensed Medical Aestheticians Kerri Parks and Jennifer Amaral are experts at laser skin rejuvenation, medical-grade peels, micro-needling, and medical HydraFacials. Patients rave about receptionist Nina and the practice’s medical assistant, Michelle. Behind the scenes two brilliant managers, Maria Disimone and Candy Adams, pull it all together. “From start to finish, we take care of our patients,” Maria

BARBARA CARROLL DOHERTY Realtor A sales executive for Mott And Chace Sotheby’s International Realty in Narragansett, Barbara Carroll Doherty’s passion for real estate came from a lifetime of seeing the world. She has made Rhode Island her home for the past 38 years, now living in Narragansett, but spent her early years traveling. “My parents made a number of long distance moves, leaving Chicago in the ‘60s, landing us in Los Angeles,” Barb says. “My late husband was fortunate to have had exciting opportunities that moved us around the country and then here to beautiful Rhode Island.” Those experiences developed her interest in real estate and the delicate transition that a family makes with these moves. Barbara holds numerous real estate designations that help clients with the complex financial decisions they will be making. “Making a difference in someone’s living situation takes skill and care,” she says. Barb prides herself in putting herself in her clients shoes and helping them to find precisely the right fit for their lifestyle and

“When I was in Mongolia living on a yak farm, I felt a calling to return to Rhode Island,” says Katie Schibler Conn. “Forty eight hours after landing, I started what has become KSA Marketing + Partnerships.” Before setting out on her adventures, she worked at integrated marketing agencies on the East and West Coasts, and was recruited by PlayStation to lead their marketing and partnerships team. “PlayStation was my dream job, yet the late nights and travel schedule left me wanting more,” she says. “I booked a one-way ticket to Peru and took a year off to backpack around the world. Nine months later I found myself in Mongolia, way off the grid, traveling by horse, living in a $10 tent and surviving on a diet of mutton and ramen noodles.” When she returned to the U.S., Pepsi called and asked for help on a project. Then PlayStation. “Those projects led to other referrals, so I hired a bookkeeper and admin to keep up,” Katie says. Seven years later, KSA has a wonderful “HQ” in the oldest building in Warwick with a growing staff of seven. “Time in Mongolia and other developing countries instilled my appreciation for simplicity, authenticity and opportunity,” she explains. “These values are how I built a marketing firm that maintains contracts with a mix of giant global brands as well as non-profit and community organizations, including Gloria Gemma, LIFEcycle, BoldrDash and more. Everything at KSA is rooted in passion and partnerships (and superheroes).”

ANN-MARIE GODDARD HOME DESIGNER & DESIGN-BUILD MANAGER “It is always my goal for every space I design to be highly functional for how a client lives in the space, but also just as beautiful,” says Ann-Marie Goddard of Exodus Design Group. Together with her husband Christopher, they run a business that designs and builds homes, and also furnishes and decorates them, with Christopher as the general contractor and Ann-Marie as the designer and project manager. “My husband and I work as a team,” she says. “We plan for and execute every phase of the projects we are hired for, to give our clients, the very best results for every project.” What they’re doing must be working: Ann-Marie and Christopher have been working together at their business for almost 14 years. “As partners, and as a family, we’ve been blessed,” she says. Exodus offers home interior and exterior design and general contractor services, both for renovation/addition work and building from the ground up. They’ve been awarded Best of Houzz for 2016, 2017 and 2018, but their biggest reason to celebrate is the opening of their new showroom in West Kingston. “It is just as much an interior design house – which includes an extensive fabric library and custom furnishings – as it is a showroom,” Ann-Marie says. “We showcase tile, lighting, flooring and plumbing finishes, as well as countertops, appliances, and kitchen and bath cabinetry.” Exodus has a collection of artisan, American-made lines hard to find elsewhere in the state. They offer special accommodations for builders and designers who want to shop at the showroom or order from them – everything from special pricing to different design hours to work with their schedules. She says, “We love to work with people who are working on large home projects and who need help with customization.” Starting a showroom seemed a natural extension of the design services Exodus already offers. “I love the creative process - every part of designing and then watching how it is achieved as it the design is executed through the build process,” she says. “I love bringing together colors, finishes, textures, fixtures and furniture to create a beautiful space for my clients.” The best part, Ann-Marie says, is “the final walk through when it is all in place and cohesive.” By then, she and her clients have spent so much time together, “that often times we have become friends. I listen to what their vision is, and get to know them and how they live in their spaces.” Exodus serves Rhode Island, especially the coastal communities,
but will travel to Massachusetts and Connecticut for projects both residential and commercial. What’s especially nice about having one design-build team is that it eliminates the all too common delays in communicating between designer and contractor. “I work with my husband to manage the schedule of his crew, which ensures the project not just be designed in a timely manner, but a team is available to make that design a reality without a long wait.” It’s also common for Exodus to work with other designers and builders who have their own clients, and they offer trade discounts to outside designers and builders. “Even if a homeowner already has a builder we welcome the opportunity to assist with design aspects such as custom choices in tile, cabinetry, vanities, custom furniture, lighting or any other finish you might need,” Ann-Marie says. “We are excited to be involved, to add value and to help make your home improvement project what you have been dreaming of.” No matter how large or small the project, Exodus treats everyone with the same level of quality, care and attention to detail. “We are a faith-based business,” Ann-Marie says. “The most important thing about what we do is our interaction with our clients, vendors and everyone we encounter through the business.”

Lisa Sienkiewicz and Gail Parella, co-owners and sisters, are proud to continue a tradition of trust, integrity, and value started by their parents, Gil and Sarah Almeida, in 1961. In 1995, Lisa and Gail took over the business and have raised their own families within the walls of Gil’s, just as their parents did. Lisa and Gail were rewarded for their hard work last year in the form of an Excellence in Business Award from the Newport County Chamber of Commerce. A passion for handmade art came at an early age for Craftland owner Margaret Carleton. “I grew up making things with my grandmother, who made beautiful art out of bits of nature she found on her walks,” she says. “I still feel that wonder at all the creative magic happening in Rhode Island.” Brightly colored and filled with oneof-a-kind items, Craftland is a creative superstore. Jewelry, housewares, clothing, and greeting cards are just a sampling of the affordable art for sale. With two locations in Providence and East Greenwich, Craftland offers the largest collection of handmade art in RI. Margaret, who has a BFA in painting and a MFA in printmaking, started making lamps and jewelry out of melted plastic Mardi Gras beads in 2002. Later that year, Craftland debuted in Providence as a pop-up holiday sale. “The outpouring from the community was just incredible,” Margaret says, adding that the holiday-only shop became a year-round shop in 2009. “The goal was to make Craftland a destination for art and craft in Providence that reflects its wonderful character,” she says. The second location on East Greenwich’s Main Street coincided with Craftland’s 15th year anniversary in 2017. “It’s so gratifying to have these spaces that showcase some of the amazing work being done in our community, and that the community support us,” Margaret says. 212 Westminster St., Providence. 264 Main St., East Greenwich. “My philosophy is simple: to inspire, teach, and create art with artistic techniques and subjects,” says Lynn Murphy. Her business, Craftersnight Educational Arts Studio, is a place to have fun and be creative. It started as Time to Design, an embroidery and quilting store, but has grown into a haven for people looking to explore different mediums and learn more about creating everything from jewelry to paintings to textile arts. “The best part of what I do each day is learning something new in the art world and teaching it to others,” she says. At Craftersnight, every Thursday is Open Studio Paint Night, when people can choose any painting in the studio and learn how to paint it themselves. This year, Lynn is launching a new Art Masters Series for Paint Night, where students learn to paint a classic work of art and learn about the artist. Other classes include wreath making, jewelry making, candle making, wine glass painting, and sewing and quilting lessons. Craftersnight also hosts birthday parties for

SIERRA BARTER Co-founder The Lady Project (LPO) started out as a small group of women looking to connect with each other, share ideas, network their talents and support like-minded people. Sierra Barter, a social media coordinator at Johnson & Wales University, and Julie Sygiel, founder of lingerie company Dear Kate, started the Lady Project in 2011. “Our vision was an ‘Old Boy’s Club’ for fabulous women in The Creative Capital to network, connect with other like-minded ladies and to do so over a glass of champagne,” Sierra says. It turns out they were onto something. From those first few networking events, The Lady Project has grown into a huge, vital force. Now, there are over 1,500 members of the non-profit, 600 of them in Providence, and another 900 across the country in other Lady Project branches. Albany, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Los Angeles, Raleigh, Boston, Nashua, Boulder, Philadelphia, New Haven, New York, San Diego, Seattle, Washington D.C., Dallas, Tampa and Portland, Maine all have their own groups, dedicated to bringing women together to share ideas and resources. “It’s an incredible feeling to be able to impact so many women’s lives,” Sierra says. “I love meeting our amazing members and traveling around the country to our different launches.” And, her work isn’t done. “We want to double our current member base,” Sierra says. “It’s our goal to give women around the country a national network of likeminded ladies.” Every month, The Lady Project hosts fun, inspiring events for women to meet and connect. Think book clubs to discuss important, relevant current releases; exercise classes to get women moving on a Sunday morning; after-work networking events to bring together women looking to empower other women. In October, the Lady Project

will host their national Lady Summit at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Providence. The highly anticipated event sells out every year, and has garnered the attention of national media outlets, including Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls at the Party. Workshops cover topics as diverse as how to turn your side hustle into your dream job, how to negotiate in the workplace and taking charge of your financial future. Beyond that, it’s a fun day designed to connect smart, engaged women to other women, and to inspire them to make positive changes in their lives, in and out of the workplace. Before and after the summit, there are lots of ways to connect and be inspired by Lady Project members. Their monthly newsletter goes out to all members of all branches, and includes short, inspiring stories about the great work women are doing in their communities. Each chapter has a Facebook group where women share their successes, promote their good work and ask others for help and recommendations. They recently launched a members-only portal on their website, full of exclusive resources and benefits. “It’s been so wonderful to connect with so many talented, creative, and entrepreneurial ladies who are passionate about their interests and supportive of each others’ growth,” says LPO member Carole Ann Penney. “Lady Project is for anyone who identifies as a female and is amazing,” Sierra says. “I’m honored to be able to impact so many women’s lives.” East Side Monthly readers can use the code “PVDMonthly” for $20 off a business membership. “By being involved with horses, a person confronts their own sense of self,” says Pam Steere Maloof of Faith Hill Farm. “It takes hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Horses demand honesty and kindness, qualities that we, as humans, then continue to uphold in our own daily lives.” Pam and her husband opened Faith Hill Farm in 1991. It has grown into an equestrian facility that not only teaches horsemanship to children and adults, but also bigger lessons about life and character. Pam says “our students take what they learn in our farm and give back. They strive to make the world a better place.” In 2017, Pam opened her nonprofit organization, the Faith Hill Farm Foundation, which works with different groups in Rhode Island to provide equine assisted psychotherapy and assisted learning. The Foundation helps individuals overcome adversity through meaningful interactions with horses. Pam knows, “research has demonstrated that horses are powerful healing partners and can enrich our lives immensely.” Faith Hill Farm welcomes everyone, from competitive riders, to burgeoning students and leisure riders. “We have a real sense of inclusiveness, team spirit, and community here,” she says. “Together we build a caring and positive environment where everyone can meet and exceed their goals.” Riders from Faith Hill Farm regularly qualify for national competitions, such as the FEI National Pony Championship. The brand new covered arena allows for all-weather riding and the farm hosts a summer camp every year with early-bird enrollment through March.

A Bonnet Shores Bungalow

A Rhode Island couple comes back home, with a house built to hold generations of family
Both Jen and Bill Lane grew up in Rhode Island, attended the University of Rhode Island, and summered in the idyllic coastal community of Bonnet Shores, so it should come as no surprise that the Ocean State is where the couple returned after spending three decades raising their family in Massachusetts. “We spent our summers in Rhode Island with family and friends, and considered it our second home,” reflects Jen Lane. “As my three children turned into young adults and moved on, we found ourselves in our ‘big’ house in Massachusetts [that was] very empty. So a year ago we decided

that we were going to sell house a beachy color palette our house, downsize, and and adapting their Massachusetts furnishings to match it move to the beach.” The couple had bought a bungalow in Bonnet Shores 25 years ago and initially hoped to renovate it for full-time living. After hiring an architect to remodel it, they quickly realized their Cape was a teardown. Lane says she spent more than 40 hours online looking for the right builders, but her search was over when she found Heritage Homes in North Kingstown. Nine months later, the Lanes moved into their new old home, delighted with it. “It was important for us to have our master bedroom on the first floor, a great kitchen for entertaining, and plenty of room for my children, grandchildren, and guests,” Lane says. The second floor features two bedrooms, a bathroom, a family room, and a bonus room/workout area, though the guesthouse may be getting the most workout. “Being near the beach brings lots of company, which we love.” Lane says she wanted the house to evoke both calmness and casual elegance, so she turned to Lee Chartier of Inside Style in Wakefield to oversee interior decisions, including colors, fabrics, upholstery, accessories, and window treatments.
“Jen [had] already narrowed things down but wanted guidance to make sure that the whole house – which had an open floor plan – would have a cohesive look and feel,” explains Chartier. “We recommended a color palette that included some pale blues and greens that had a good amount of gray in them. The master bed and bath are done in Benjamin Moore Sleigh Bells and Half Moon Crest, which are soft, beautiful tones. We added gold in silver tones in the draperies, bedding, and chair upholstery for a romantic feel.” As the ambience of their Massachusetts home had been radically different from the Lanes’ new cottage-style stunner by the sea, the couple had to take a closer look at what furniture could stay, what had to go, and what could be reinvented. Chartier set her eyes on the large, traditional dark wood china cabinet, decorated with what seemed to be a white elephant. “We removed the glass doors, painted it inside and out, and changed the hardware. You wouldn’t recognize it! Completely transformed into something they can now use,” she says with gusto. “Older pieces are not only sentimental but they’re often much better made than pieces today. It just takes vision to transform them.” Chartier “really helped me achieve my goals!” Lane says. “All the gals at Inside Style are very talented and fun to work with.” Another critical element in capturing the vibe Lane wanted was lighting. “This was one of my most difficult tasks,” Lane says, “because I believe lighting has to be special to achieve my desired look and feeling.” The homeowner worked closely with Cynthia Lafarier of Harbour Lighting Boutique in Exeter to make purposeful, “illuminating” decisions. “So Bill and I are ‘back home’ in Bonnet and I can say this is our last stop,” says Lane. “But we have many, many more years of family, love, and happiness as our family continues to grow. We look forward to our kids coming home on the weekends [in] the years ahead and this cycle repeating itself year after year.”

experience and skill levels. Sticking with the easiest course on several auto-belay walls, I worked my way around the gym. I summited my first wall on the first attempt, giving me a boost of false confidence. I quickly discovered that even among the low-numbered courses, the difficulty levels can vary greatly. My next attempt was on a wall that jutted out about two-thirds of the way up. Four times I attempted to navigate past it and each one resulted in me tumbling back down to the mat. West urged me not to get discouraged. “The one thing beginners and experienced climbers have in common is that they both fall a lot,” he assured me. After working my way up – and falling back down – several other courses, I needed a break. Rock climbing really tests your grip strength in a way that most exercises don’t. My hands, wrists, and forearms started to fatigue fairly quickly. That’s when West and his co-worker, Eddie, pointed out what in retrospect should have been obvious: I should have been letting my legs do most of the work. With that in mind, I clipped into the next wall and focused on using my legs. I realized that I had been almost exclusively looking up during each climb as my hands fumbled for the next-highest hold to grab; by looking down more and letting my legs climb higher before reaching up for the next handhold, I had a lot more success. After spending most of the session falling, I was suddenly climbing, and quickly reached the top of the wall. I triumphantly lowered myself back to the base with a sense of accomplishment and newfound understanding of the sport. Unfortunately, my feeling of victory was abruptly cut short when I noticed the sign reading, “Kid-friendly climb.”

Brubeck Brothers Quartet Wednesday, March 21, 2018 7:30 p.m. The Forman Theatre Chris and Dan Brubeck, sons of the late jazz great Dave Brubeck, have been making music together practically all their lives. Drummer Dan and bassist, trombonist and composer Chris cut their first record together in 1966. Guitarist Mike DeMicco and pianist Chuck Lamb round out this dynamic quartet. Although the quartet’s style is rooted in traditional jazz, their concerts reveal an ability to explore and play odd time signatures while naturally integrating the influences of funk, blues and world music.

Rediscover Spain Savor oceans of Mediterranean flavor at a Narragansett classic The Rhode Island restaurant scene is always changing. Restaurants open; restaurants close. Yet sometimes we long for the old, familiar spots – restaurants that have stood the test of time. One example: Spain of Narragansett. I made a visit to figure out the secret to its longevity. Spain was first opened near the Narragansett Pier in 1987 by Salvador Gomes and the late Felix Rodriguez. In 1995, it moved to its current location on Ocean Road near Scarborough Beach. Salvador’s younger brother, Joe, and his wife, Nina, tend to the daily operations while Salvador’s wife, J.J., manages the business end of things. Salvador is still in the kitchen.
The restaurant is known for its fresh, cooked-to-order, Mediterranean-inspired meals. The dining room is bright and open, with decor suited to the nearby beach (think wicker chairs and pastel colors). There is a large bar area and lounge, important for a restaurant that doesn’t take small reservations. In the warmer months, the restaurant also provides a lovely patio for outside dining. On the night I visited with a friend, the restaurant was full, so we gladly sat at the bar. As a bonus, the NFL playoffs were displayed on three televisions. Sangria is Spain’s signature drink, but we opted for cocktails: I tried the ‘90s-style Grey Goose
Cosmopolitan ($9), and my friend decided on a Paloma ($9) made with Patron Silver Tequila, ruby red grapefruit juice, and Sprite. Before we were done with our meal, we also each enjoyed a Whalers Rise ($5.50). All of the drinks, including wine, are generously portioned. Before our appetizers were served, we were given bread with a delicious garlic butter. I sampled the shrimp appetizer ($12.50), which featured medium-sized shrimp sauteed in garlic and olive oil. They definitely had a kick to them and were a nice way to start the meal. The last of our bread sopped up the yummy sauce left in the casserole dish. My friend, a calamari

connoisseur, gave Spain’s version ($11) a try. She loved that the calamari weren’t greasy and contentedly ate them plain, sans cocktail sauce. Spain is best known for its seafood, which is generally caught in local waters. Feeling decadent, I ordered the Baked Stuffed Lobster ($30). It wasn’t a huge lobster, only 1.5 pounds, but it was plenty for me, with sweet and tender meat. The stuffing was chock-full of crab, shrimp, and scallops, and the sides included clarified butter and a dish of rice, spinach, broccoli, and carrots. My friend was intrigued by the night’s Swordfish Special ($32), prepared simply

with lemon and white wine. The price was high, but it bought an enormous portion – more than a pound of fresh fish – with the same sides as my entree. At last, the bartender brought over a tray of six desserts. My friend loves Tres Leches Cake ($9) and spoke highly of Spain’s
version. I had a choice of Crème Brulee or Flan and opted for the latter ($9). This eggy, steamed custard is a staple of Spanish desserts. Spain was bustling, despite the cold winter night. For close to 30 years, Spain has been essential to the Rhode Island restaurant scene. Friends and family have mentioned how Spain is their favorite restaurant in all of Rhode Island. My cousin, who is extremely picky, even got married here on a beautiful summer day out on the patio. The food has remained consistently good over the years, as has the attentive service. If you haven’t been to Spain in years, it’s worth the walk down memory lane.

From Farm (and Sea) to Table How Artur Akopov creates diverse menus with local ingredients at Mariner Grille From the outside, Mariner Grille is an unassuming spot – tucked into a shopping complex off 108. Yet the Narragansett restaurant has a lot to offer: a horseshoe bar that’s busy all day, a modernist dining room for elegant seafood dinners, and a rotation of visiting musicians. At the heart of Mariner is Artur Akopov, executive chef and longtime Rhode Island transplant. Using locally sourced ingredients, Akopov has developed a diverse menu of seafood and terrestrial dishes, from the spicy El Diablo Burger to a magnificent Honey Apple Cider Glazed Salmon. Akopov rarely takes a day off, but we managed to catch him between shifts.
Folks come to the Mariner looking for all kinds of different things: pub fare, elegant seafood platters, and multi-course prix fixe lunches and dinners. How do you accommodate this range of appetites? We try to keep it simple, using classic dishes and old Rhode Island staples, but we also wanted to add some new and different flavors that you don’t see available on as many menus. Having the variety in atmosphere, from fine dining to the lounge, allows us to manage multiple menus with a little crossover, while still keeping up with seasonal changes from our local farms and fishermen. How does the menu change from season to season? How will you pivot from winter to spring? We change the menu at least twice per year to accommodate seasonal changes. In the winter, our dishes tend to lean more towards

comfort food, while the summer will give us a widely different produce variety to incorporate into our menus. What’s your relationship with local fishing and agriculture? We are fortunate enough to be in Narragansett, with the Port of Galilee just a few miles away. Our restaurant partners with local businesses like Narragansett Bay Lobsters, as well as Farm Fresh and Sunset Farm. We love supporting local fishing and agriculture. We also rely quite heavily on these local farms and fishermen who make it possible for us to keep doing what we do.
Libations are a huge part of the Mariner. Do you guests show a lot of interest in pairings? We do get a fair amount of interest in pairings. Our menu has some dishes or flavor combinations that aren’t offered in the area and it seems to interest people to try to pair a beer or a wine with them. We also try to change out our local beers often, and Rhode Island’s wonderful breweries will entice any customer to try to pair a local brew with their meal.

How did you come to join Mariner Grille? I have been working in the restaurant business for over two decades. In 2006, the original owners approached me hoping I would help them open a new business called Mariner Grille. I worked with them to create the business and stayed for five years. After that, I took some time off to travel and eventually came back three years ago to rejoin the team.

Everything’s Better With Butter Butter Cuisine is the latest culinary venture from Jamestown chef Brian Halloran and his wife Lori – and it may just be the “secret ingredient” you’ve been looking for. Finishing butters are designed to melt into recipes and add dynamic new flavors. Halloran’s flavors include Lemon Caper Herb Butter, Honey Roasted Strawberry Butter, and Red Wine Shallot Butter, among others. The butters can be used to flavor a wide range of ingredients, like veggies, rice, pasta, meat, and fish. Non-dairy options, like the Thai Coconut butter, are also available. Each tub retails for around $8.50 and can be found in local grocery chains like Dave’s Marketplace. Chef Halloran maintains a blog on the Butter Cuisine website, illustrating how he uses the butters in his cooking. Jamestown, ButterCuisine.com

The popular Mexican eatery on Block Island, Calaveras, is rapidly expanding: a mainland location opened in Peace Dale this winter, and a third location is slated to settle into the Block Island Maritime Institute in June. So far, owners Julio and Iliana Mendoza have been pleased with their success in Peace Dale. “We are building up a clientele,” says Iliana. “People are still not used to authentic authentic Mexican food, but they love the freshness of the food.” Many of the dishes, including favorites like the fish tacos and the pulled chicken, are inspired by Julio’s family recipes and upbringing in Mexico City. The tortillas have been a particular hit with children, who can watch the flatbread fry. The waterfront Calaveras should be open for the summer rush, and an expanded menu will include ceviche. Bluewater Bar + Grill joined the exciting East Bay dining scene in 2011 with a fresh take on contemporary dining. Chef-owner Brian Thimme, a culinary professional with more than 20 years of experience, envisioned a restaurant that combined his passion for locally sourced foods with his love of family.
The expansive restaurant, which is nestled near the Barrington Yacht Club on the Tyler Point Peninsula, offers gorgeous waterfront views. Open year-round for dinner seven nights a week and seasonally for lunch Thursday through Sunday, Bluewater features New England and American farmto-table classics.

Approved Go Nuts for Donuts donut, we don’t want to know about it. When you’re looking for breakfast that’s also kind of dessert, look no further than these three South County treats.
1. Dave’s Coffee There’s more to Dave’s than just coffee milk – like their small-batch baked donuts. Get there early to snag one of their rotating flavors, like this Chocolate Glazed. Those with dietary restrictions take note: Dave’s donuts are gluten-free. Charlestown, DavesCoffee.com
2. Allie’s Donuts
3. 4corners Coffee
The first name in Rhode Island donuts is Allie’s. We went for the classic honey-dipped and a green sprinkle–topped donut for St. Patrick’s Day. But there’s really no such thing as a wrong choice here, as proven by the line out the door. North Kingstown, Facebook: Allie’s Donuts Inc
How do you reinvent the wheel? You make square donuts. 4corners’ big, fluffy donuts are as filling as they are tasty, but we found room for two. Their menu features tons of fun flavors, but we opted to mix the revolutionary shape with a classic flavor – pink sprinkles. Warwick, 4CornersCoffeeRI.com
