Hello, it’s been a while! If you missed our announcements, due to the pandemic we made the decision to pause our magazine starting with the April issue. We sprang into action in the digital world, sharing new articles and updating our COVID-19 Rhody Resources on SoRhodeIsland.com, and via our Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter accounts. Making printed magazines is our first love, and we’re so happy to be back. Much has changed over the past few months, but Rhode Islanders are ever-resourceful. As we’ve continued to monitor happenings throughout the region, we’re always heart warmed and assured by the steady stream of examples of resilience, optimism, and forward-thinking. Planning this relaunch issue, it became clear that a theme had developed right under our noses: Hope. In The Hope Issue we share stories of people doing what they do best – stepping up to help their communities in inventive ways. Meet the artist who turned three words from a Governor’s press briefing into a statewide wardrobe essential, the hobbyist woodworker who strategically placed her four marquee

letters at landmarks to brighten our social media news feeds, and so many more instances of people doing virtually anything and everything. There are also tried and true constants, like a beloved seafood spot turning 100 with no signs of aging. As the approaching summer might look a bit different, we offer ideas for making the most of a home-based season – from creating a backyard oasis to finding the freshest oysters, to nautical inspiration for your little corner of the world. In early July, SO Rhode Island and SO Summer will join forces for a special double issue. The magazine will offer town-by-town highlights of all that Southern Rhode Island has to offer throughout the season and more. It is our hope that you will enjoy, be inspired, and stay well! BRING THE ARCHITECTURAL BEAUTY OF RHODE ISLAND TO YOUR HOME Stylish silkscreens of landmarks combine vintage vibes and Rhody pride Gentle colors. Sturdy lines. Proud and elegant facades. The artwork of Adam J. Carriuolo looks like tourism posters from another century, where Victorian mansions mingle with star-studded skies, and the flaming braziers of WaterFire glow beneath the stoic face of the Turk’s Head. But Carriuolo is very much a 21st-century artist, living and working in Rhode Island – and his primary occupation, believe it or not, is developing art designs for video games. A native of Brockton, Massachusetts, Carriuolo has spent much of his professional life in the Boston area. But his series of

vintage-style prints depicts scenes in Rhode Island, particularly our historic architecture; subjects include the Vernon Court mansion in Newport, the Colonial houses of Wickford, and The Towers in Narragansett. Each silkscreen print is handmade and rendered in seven or eight colors; sizes and shapes vary considerably, depending on the subject. Since the printing process is labor-intensive, copies aren’t always available. But with landscapes this dreamy, an original Carriuolo is worth the wait. To Have and To… Put on Hold

Any other year, now would be “go-time” for Rhode Island’s wedding business. Venues, caterers, planners, photographers, bakers, transportation companies, florists, bands and DJs, makeup artists and salons – few of these professionals would see a free weekend spring through the end of the fall. But, as we all know, these are anything but normal times. In mid-April, Allison Barbera, who owns her eponymous onsite makeup and hair

service, co-founded the Rhode Island Coalition of Wedding Vendors Facebook group, a digital space where vendors can voice concerns and seek solutions to the challenges the pandemic has presented. “I expected maybe 50 people to join,” she recalls. “We’re up to 650.” Members are encouraged to contact state leaders to express their business challenges and seek answers about future event guidelines. “Personally, my company’s

revenue is down 60 percent compared to last year,” says Barbera, who employs 18 independent contractors. Some vendors have turned creative to keep busy in lieu of weddings, like Luke Renchan Entertainment, which orchestrates drive-by birthday celebrations with a DJ in tow and backyard movie nights. While hopeful weddings will return to “some sense of normalcy” by November, most of Renchan’s

Members of the wedding industry share their struggles and hopes as they navigate the impacts of COVID-19

As we were saying... Our couples are postponing or rescheduling to 2021; he’s currently partnered with Artistic Wedding Films to stream small weddings “so that they can connect with their audience outside the limitations.” Venues, too, have been forced to react and adapt. Typically, The Towers in Narragansett has weddings booked every weekend now through the end of the year. Event Coordinator Donna DiCicco says the oceanfront venue has seen few cancellations. “Most we’ve been moving to 2021, but it’s a test to see what we have available,” she explains. Photographer Maria Burton began contacting her couples in April, encouraging them to reach out to their venue to discuss options. More than half of the weddings she had booked this year have rescheduled to 2021, which presents its own challenge. “Some people feel really strongly about getting married on a Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, which I completely understand, but sometimes we’re already booked,” she says. “We’re all trying to make the best of the situation; it’s out of our control and my focus is how I can serve my clients.” Similarly, Karen Tungett, general manager and co-owner of Blackstone Caterers, empathizes with her brides and grooms, who have to make the difficult decision of rescheduling, postponing, or cancelling. “Some clients have said they want to keep their date in 2020 and just downscale it, yet we still don’t know what that exactly means. Is it 20, 50, 100? Who knows, as it keeps changing,” explains Tungett. Like with many, this uncharted territory has been hard on Tungett. “I’m in the business to make dreams come true, to make people happy, create their dream – not to see them all go through this.” But she’s focusing on the silver lining: “My sales team is still very active. Leads and bookings for 2021 are on fire because they realized that 2020 couples are moving into 2021. Soon enough we will be starting to book for 2022!”

STEEL HAND, COLD HEART In Dark Age Scandinavia, teenaged Carina is raised by a clan of warrior women, but she struggles to earn her keep. Scituate author Rachel Menard packs her novel with magic, adventure, and budding romance. Steel Hand, Cold Heart won the Grand Prize at the Writer’s Digest Self-Published E-Book Awards.

BURN DOWN THIS WORLD When Celeste and Reid reunite, there’s a lot of friction between the two siblings. Their wounds run deep, and Celeste’s frustrations with her own life make it doubly hard to deal with her brother’s extended visit. SOMEONE ELSE Sarah is a teenager on the brink. Her parents are unstable. Her small town is brimming with secret inner lives. Her friend, recently dead from suicide, has returned to haunt her. Mary Paula Hunter’s debut novel is an unsettling character study set in the late 1960s. Hunter herself is a veteran dancer and Michigan native who lives in Providence, and her book is a detailed tour of historic East Lansing. WHEN THE BABIES CAME TO STAY Nobody knows where the babies came from, but the local librarian decides to keep them, and the whole town teaches them life lessons. Rhode Island illustrator Jeanette Bradley provided the colorful illustrations for this lighthearted children’s allegory by Christine McDonnell. THE FISH AND THE DOVE Brace yourself: Mary-Kim Arnold’s poetry collection is a no-holds-barred exploration of womanhood, ancient mythology, and the Korean-American experience. Arnold teaches writing at Brown, and her second volume is a layered showcase of her lyrical style. Note: Proceeds from the book go to The Wedding Cake House art center.

Marquee signs are nearly as old as electricity, but they still make us gaze in wonder. Just ask Melanie Jackson: When she got married last September, she spelled out the word “love” in four-foot letters studded with lightbulbs. “They were the ‘it’ thing of our wedding,” Jackson recalls. “People still talk about them to this day. I knew I wanted to bring that same kind of happiness and ‘it’ factor to others, no matter what the occasion.” The result is itsLIT, a marquee signage company that Jackson started earlier this year. If you’re still using a calendar, you may shudder at the thought of founding any kind of small enterprise in March 2020. “I started my business right before the pandemic hit,” says Jackson. “I am a hobby woodworker when I’m not working my day job, so I knew I would be able to make my

vision become a reality.” Instead of bemoaning the strange timing, Jackson found purpose in the pandemic. She created the four letters spelling “hope” and started to photograph them around local landmarks: the State House, Hasbro headquarters, and the Newport Bridge, among others. She then started to post the series on Instagram. For this native Rhode Islander, “hope” isn’t just a nice word; it’s a deliberate reference to the state flag. “I took it as a sign that maybe this is exactly what everyone needs, especially at a time like this,” says Jackson. “Since I had just started my business I didn’t have any inventory – letters – so I started to build them. I figured, if for nothing else, I could take my letters around, spread a little hope and happiness, just like the ‘love’ letters did at my wedding.”

United We Respond: Jackson and her husband live in Garden City, where she decided to pose the first shot. During walks with her dog, she would brainstorm additional shooting locations. Despite the global quarantine, Jackson is upbeat about her business prospects. The letters are novel and bright, and she expects to decorate a range of events, from weddings and bar mitzvahs to corporate events and gender-reveal parties. Until then, she plans to spread a little more hope on social media. “I’m not sure how many other places we will go,” she says, “but all I know is that seeing the positive reaction and having people reach out to tell me it’s brightened their days keeps me wanting to continue to make this impact.” To find out more about itsLIT, email itslitri@gmail.com and follow along on Instagram at @itslit_ri.

The Nook Coffee House Coffee Shop We’re on the hunt for Rhody Gems! Every neighborhood has that secret, hidden, cool and unusual, or hole-inthe-wall spot that locals love. Email Abbie@ProvidenceOnline.com to suggest yours and we just might feature it! What it is: More than just a community coffee shop, The Nook is also a community supporter, displaying and selling art by Kelsea Piquette, who’s donating 20 percent of proceeds to local COVID-19 relief efforts.

What makes it a Rhody Gem? Known for hosting crafting events, author book chats, and movie nights pre-pandemic, The Nook remains a hub for local art. Find the fruits of the “Come Together” art project created by local students hanging on their windows and Piquette’s nature photography displayed on canvas inside. Owner Shannon Wylie misses the buzz of a busy coffee shop, with neighbors streaming in and out before work for their caffeine fixes and families sticking around for a game of Connect 4, and looks forward to the cheery frenzy in the future. “Our goal is to give people a safe haven from the rest of their routine,” Wylie says, making sure the shop is all positive vibes even during social distancing so customers “can’t help but walk out in a better mood.”

Signs of As South County prepares for summer, signs of hope are everywhere

by Robert Isenberg

“Hope we have as an anchor of the soul.”

Photography by Nick DelGiudice

It was this biblical phrase that inspired our state flag: The word “hope” next to an anchor. In the age of coronavirus and national lockdowns, that sentiment has never been more meaningful. Today, the winter doldrums have melted away, and just as the ground has thawed and the air has warmed, South County is opening up again, preparing itself for its most dynamic season. This summer will be very different, of course. The crowds will be thinner, by design. Beaches will open, but with frustrating restrictions. Masks will be worn. Entire festivals won’t take place, and some of our favorite venues won’t open at all. But everywhere you look, there are signs of hope, little acts of kindness, grassroots efforts, and ideas so ingenious you wonder why nobody ever thought of them before. Many of these hopeful signs will persist, long after beaches have opened and Phase 2 of the state’s reopening has begun. As our staff at SO Rhode Island have watched and waited, these are just some of the South County stories that caught our eyes – rays of sunshine in a challenging time, symbols that, no matter what happens in the coming year, hope will prevail.

Everyday Folks Sew Masks

Local Winery Builds Shields

You can easily find the South County Masketeers on Facebook, a public group dedicated to sewing together masks. What’s astonishing is that the group counts nearly 600 members, and at press time had fashioned more than 10,000 masks. These handmade accoutrements have been distributed all over the state – and they make up just one of countless examples of locals putting their quarantine time to good use. They aren’t the only ones putting their sartorial skills to work, of course; South County is full of volunteer mask-makers. But the Masketeers are easy to join, and they definitely picked a great name. Facebook: South County Masketeers

This year hasn’t been a good one for the wine business, and Wickford-based Gooseneck Vineyards has struggled to reach customers. But that hasn’t stopped owners Liana Buonanno and Paul Fede from staying active. Not only has Gooseneck donated 2,000 bottles of wine to area restaurants – to give away free with curbside pickup – but Fede has also personally constructed transparent shields for local cashiers. North Kingstown, GooseneckVineyards.com

Distillery Makes Hand Sanitizer Distilleries have been unlikely heroes of the pandemic because the process for making liquor is similar to making antibacterial gels. When bottles of Purell vanished from shelves in March, North Kingstown-based Java Skin Care teamed up with Sons of Liberty Spirits Co. in South Kingstown to create a brand-new hand sanitizer. Talk about a can-do spirit! SOLSpirits.com, JavaSkinCare.com

Taking in RI Sunshine Picking your own flowers at Wicked Tulips has become a Rhode Island rite of spring – and many were devastated to hear that the flower farm had to cancel its first event in their new location after relocating to Exeter. In response, Elizabeth Almeida of North Kingstown asked locals to send photos of themselves so she could superimpose the shot on a background of blossoms. Almeida partly started RISunshine.com in memory of her late mother, who loved flowers, but also to donate half of the proceeds to Wicked Tulips. The farm itself got plucky and offered virtual tours and curbside pick-ups during bloom time.

Virtual Shopping in Westerly As retailers struggled to bring in customers, the Ocean Community Chamber of Commerce tried a radical tactic: They offered “virtual tours” of local shops via Facebook Live. Proprietors guided viewers around their shops, and items could be purchased by phone or website. The same way scores of sit-down restaurants quickly focused on takeout, myriad businesses have used virtual commerce to make ends meet. The Chamber followed this model by hosting a virtual art show in late May. Now Playing: The Misquamicut Drive-In The drive-in movie theater is one of the great icons of mid-century nostalgia – and it’s practically designed for the pandemic environment: You can watch a blockbuster in a group, but from the safety of your sealed, air-conditioned vehicle. Fans poured into the Misquamicut Drive-In in May to watch the Rhody favorite, Jaws, and thanks to the cinema’s thoughtful precautions, more films are scheduled for this month (along with expanded parking): The Neverending Story (June 12), Rocky Horror Picture Show (June 13), Jumanji: The Next Level (June 19), and Yesterday (June 26). Art Online and Outdoors in Jamestown For many of us, the lockdown prompted us to brush up on old pastimes or try out new skills. Video tutorials come in many forms, including art classes from the Jamestown Art Center. Any child or adult can participate in these online workshops from local artists; you can practice such diverse creative pursuits as drawing, photography, and stone carving. And to celebrate its 10th anniversary, the Jamestown Arts Center plans to host its Outdoor Arts Experience, a (socially distanced) openair showcase of art installations. Ballard’s is Back! All spring long, fans of Block Island held their breath. Would the island open up to tourists? Would local businesses be allowed to welcome visitors from the mainland? And then we got the news: Ballard’s Island Beach Resort would open June 12. As every Block Island regular knows, Ballard’s is a lynchpin of the hospitality scene, and the return of its hotel, restaurant, and concert stage bodes well for New Shoreham – and for us. As always, spend your time responsibly. New Shoreham, BallardsBI.com

We asked locals to offer what uniquely South County experiences are giving them hope right now. Maybe it's knowing the beach will always be there, or the brilliant night sky, or that first sip of a Del's. Read on and be inspired: My family's sign of HOPE here in South County is now being able to stroll the village sidewalks or visit a garden center and see faces again… I know there are smiles of joy behind those masks!

-Marisa Navakauskas, Wakefield All the smiles and waves from all the people walking outside who I never knew lived in my neighborhood.

-Amber Gadde, South Kingstown One big sign of hope for me for this summer is Brickley’s opening! Soon I can devour my favorite large coffee chip ice cream cone (homemade waffle cone of course!) with chocolate sprinkles and that means no matter what – summer is here!

-Laura Rossi Totten, Jamestown Beaches opening up and people out and about enjoying the nice weather.

-Mike Yarworth, Wakefield I like seeing construction work pick up again and restaurants starting to serve outdoors again.

-Doug Birkitt, North Kingstown “Give Hope” by Damian Rufo

It gives me hope to know that the arts nourish the soul of our shared community, most especially now. Art is a way forward to help soothe minds and hearts and express emotions which are often beyond words.

-Kathleen Carland, South Kingstown To see the boats uncovered from their winter shrink wrap one by one is surely a sign of spring but this year, as the first few boats are put on their moorings, it feels more like a sign of hope, signaling that folks are venturing out and will soon feel the wind on their face as they enjoy what no virus can separate them from.

-Chris Bourget, Wickford I feel the most hope when I look at our beautiful beaches! I feel pride in where I live and hope in the fact that we can soon all enjoy what Mother Nature has given us living in the Ocean State.

-Tricia Pan, Narragansett What gives me hope in these times? The creative people I'm surrounded by in Rhode Island! The arts are still alive in Rhode Island!

Everybody Loves Lobster There is nothing more New England than a fresh, locally caught lobster delivered to your front door. That’s exactly what Narragansett Bay Lobsters decided to offer – and the South Kingstown fish market will continue the service into the summer. The company offers a variety of fish and shellfish, as well, and it’s just one example of the many local food purveyors who now provide delivery or curbside pickup. Narragansett, NarragansettBayLobsters.com

Local Markets to Table South County is largely rural and a great place to retire – which is great under normal circumstances, but nightmarish for seniors in need of pantry items. Belmont Market in South Kingstown conscripted an army of volunteers, with the help of the South County YMCA, to deliver groceries across the region (and even to Block Island), saving hundreds of customers the hard and risky trip. Belmont was among many local businesses reaching out to homebound customers, including Pat’s Pastured farm in East Greenwich, which has delivered for numerous local growers. South Kingstown, BelmontMarket.com; East Greenwich, PatsPastured.com

The Return of Sit-Down Dining Eating outside on a warm day is one of the trademarks of life in South County. Local restaurateurs were biting their nails all spring, organizing curbside pickup and adding online order forms to their websites. When outdoor dining was again permitted in late May, everyone exhaled a sigh of relief – the reservations started pouring in. Many eateries already had expansive verandahs and patios (or their own stretch of shoreline, like George’s of Galilee); others are creating them out of yards and parking lots. You’ll still have to bring your mask and stay six feet away from other diners, but it’s a small price to pay for scrumptious local fare on an actual plate.

Nothing says summer in New England quite like the first lobster

Sit down for a bite at George’s of Galilee

Late May, South County Tourism Council released an upbeat, might we say "so Rhode Island" video: Aerial views of our favorite beaches and hotel getaways, shots of summer essentials like lobster rolls and cold beer, beach towels and sunsets. This is the kick-off of their #FindYourWayBack campaign to welcome visitors back and showcase the vast outdoors, from dining to hiking and biking. While most of the footage was shot pre-Coronavirus, we're reminded that we will once more be with our toes in the sand, cocktails in hand, living our best life by the water – together.

Backyard Oasis Enjoy the water from the comfort of your own lawn with this custom, nature-inspired swimming hole Picture a pool of crystal water edged in stone or sand. You might imagine it nestled under a canopy of trees in the woods, or filling with the tide along the shore of some private beach – but in reality, it is steps from your back door. That is the idyllic setting David San Antonio tries to create with what he calls “Nature’s Swimming Hole”, a custom, low-maintenance, and nature-inspired pool in which his (appropriately named) company A Piece of Paradise specializes. “Swimming holes take us back to childhood memories of exploring creeks and swinging on ropes in the water of a lake or pond,” says San Antonio. “Summertime and swimming holes are one in the same in our mind!” And since summer might look a little different this year with many of our favorite beaches restricted, creating that personal paradise in your backyard sounds all the more appealing. Meet Maret Bondorew The illustrator who turned “Knock It Off” into a fashion statement

“Knock it off.” Just three words, and they’ve made history. They were first uttered by Gina Raimondo, when the governor implored Rhode Islanders to stay home during the pandemic. Then they returned – as jolly letters on a T-shirt next to a bobbing anchor. Frog & Toad Press received hundreds of pre-orders before the shirt was even printed, and a scrubs top soon followed. The design now adorns Knock It Off IPA, a new beer from Proclamation Ale Company; the Knock It Off Stay at Home Brew from White Electric Coffee; and a Knock It Off hand sanitizer from The Industrious Spirit Company. The smile-inducing image was created by Maret Bondorew, graphic designer for Frog & Toad Press. Bondorew studied illustration and art history at Hartford Art School, and after she spent some time working retail at the Frog & Toad gift store, co-owner Asher Schofield recognized her talents and invited her to start a press in 2014. “I feel really lucky to have Asher as a boss-co-conspiratorcheerleader,” says Bondorew. “With his design background, he’s able to serve as an art director on all our projects, and we both have the same off-kilter sense of humor, so a lot of our strangest ideas actually manage to see the light of day.” And there are a lot of strange ideas. Bondorew has drawn and designed untold numbers of cards, patches, banners, and shirts. Examples: A greeting card with George Washington wearing sunglasses and the caption, “You’re old, but like, cool old.” Or a portrait of fungi and skulls: “Poisonous Mushrooms. (Try not to eat these).” “I approach each project first by thinking about who my audience is and what the feeling is that I want to convey in the piece,” says Bondorew. “I do a lot of problem solving and trial and error through pencil sketches – some pieces come easier than others. As with any creative endeavor, creating a final piece comes with highs and lows and moments of frantic work and self-doubt. But somehow I reach the final piece!” Bondorew has been managing well during the quarantine, despite being five months pregnant, and she’s spent much of her time gardening, walking her dog, and keeping up with the news. When Schofield proposed the “Knock It Off” shirt, she couldn’t have anticipated the craze that followed. She notes that 20 percent of T-shirt sales benefit the Rhode Island Foundation’s COVID-19 Response Fund, and at press time the shirts had raised more than $42,000. “We have been overwhelmed, blown away, and humbled by the response to ‘Knock It Off,’” she says. “[Asher] foresaw the community latching onto ‘Knock It Off’ in a way I couldn’t. Rhode Islanders sure know how to rally together, and that’s one thing I love about this state.”

As with any creative endeavor, creating a final piece comes with highs and lows and moments of frantic work and self-doubt. But somehow I reach the final piece! - Maret Bondorew

Nesting Instincts How a storied Wickford Colonial became a forever home

Photos courtesy of Erin Batten

Splashes of navy add nautical appeal to calming neutrals

Many homes along Wickford’s main drag have had many lives. Take the home of Nicholas and Erin Batten, a Greek Revival Colonial initially spotted for them by a friend who knew the couple adored older homes with charm and were looking to move into the Village. “Our friend sent us the listing and said the house actually used to be her hair salon but was the perfect project for what we wanted,” begins Erin. “Well, that old hair salon is now our home, full of light, warmth, and character.” In the four years since taking ownership of the 1839 house, the Battens have heard many tales, including the time a former

retail tenant took the shutters along after vacating. Says Erin, “We wondered why there weren’t any – now we know!” Erin’s father, a master craftsman, was able to recreate period pieces to match. Having been a family home, then partial commercial space, then mixed occupancy, the family embarked on a long list of projects to make the entire property – inside and out – a residence of their very own. From landscaping

to renovations, the couple completed most projects themselves. One significant modification was removing an unsightly and unused downstairs bathroom shower stall, and using the space to create a small walk-in pantry. Through this process of both structural updates and decorative changes, Erin discovered a knack and a passion for interior design and recently launched her business, Bespoke Staging. “I have been a stay-at-home mom for two years and decided I wanted to start doing something I loved, which has always been styling and decorating

the home,” she says. Signature elements of Erin’s style are neutral wall colors with white highlighting architectural details like window frames and interior shutters, molding, and fireplace surrounds. Larger furniture pieces are also neutral, with color and pattern introduced through textiles like throws and pillow covers. “I like pops of color and pieces that have special meaning,” says Erin. “I like mixing different styles and finding commonality in bringing it all together. In my own home it’s a bit eclectic.” Erin enjoys living in Wickford and seeks pieces that imbue a waterside vibe. “I love using the outdoors to inspire the inside; it creates a nice flow,” she says. “Seeing the ocean is all the inspiration I need to create a warm coastal feel. Things like driftwood, sand tones, and a bowl of shells I found on the beaches here. Navy blue is one

FOR HIM

By Chuck Stanton

SORhodeIsland.com • June 2020

If you’re someone who has been working from home or furloughed since mid-March, chances are good that your style has quickly devolved from that of Casual Friday attire – perhaps an untucked shirt and jeans – to yogaor sweatpants, to pajama bottoms and an old T-shirt. We asked creative duo Gina Mastrostefano and Chuck Staton to share what they’ve been sporting from head

to toe. Why them? Because the Warren-based couple are both regular contributors to our magazines, plus Staton is also a comedian, filmmaker, and half of the Chuck and Brad Podcast, while Mastrostefano is behind the beer- and beauty-focused Instagram account @abeautifulbrew. We knew they’d nail the task. GenXers might recall the inspiration for this piece, the “Are You a Preppie” poster circa 1979. Now, go brush your teeth.

RHODY QUARANTINI Cheers to good health and better days with this refreshing recipe We’ve teamed up with The Industrious Spirit Company to create this subtle porch (or roof) sipper perfect for an evening spent social distancing with the windows open. Whether the ingredients come from a garden or market, what better gin to use in this summer bevvie than the botanical new release from ISCO? For this Rhody Recipe, all you need is four ingredients and you’ll be ready to toast a summer sunset!

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTIONS

• 2 oz Ornamental Gin from The Industrious Spirit Company

1. Create mint syrup: Muddle a handful of mint leaves with 1/2 cup of sugar until they’re well crushed. Add 1/2 cup of water. Pour all into a pot and bring to a gentle boil; strain into a glass container and allow to cool.

• 3/4 oz lemon juice • 1/2 oz homemade mint syrup • Mint leaves

(for garnish and syrup)

2. Add the syrup and the rest of the ingredients to a cocktail shaker full of ice. Shake like crazy. 3. Strain into a Nick and Nora glass, or whatever you have on hand – we won’t judge! – and garnish with mint.

100 Years of Seafood

The story of Aunt Carrie’s reads like an epic novel: Carrie and Ulysses Cooper lived in Connecticut but spent summers in Narragansett. They get the idea to sell lemonade to fishermen. Carrie teaches herself to cook seafood and then, in 1920, they set up a restaurant. Customers flock to Point Judith. Generations unfold in its kitchen. “Aunt Carrie’s has been part of so many lives,” says Elsie Foy, the restaurant’s most recent owner. “One of the things we want to celebrate is all the staff that have worked here over 100 years. Most began here with their first job. Some kids started at 14 or 15 and worked through college, and some beyond.” Centennials wait for no pandemic, and Foy has been overseeing a profound renovation process. The dining room will retain its historic appearance, but when all

WEDDINGS • BIRTHDAYS • PARTIES • SPONSORED EVENTS the work is done, Aunt Carrie’s will gain an upgraded kitchen, an addition to the building, and a fresh coat of paint. “It’s taken so much longer than we expected, due to the old building, needing to reinforce floors and such,” says Foy. “We went all the way back to the studs. Electric, plumbing, and gas lines are all new.” Under normal circumstances, Aunt Carrie’s hums all summer, serving fried clam rolls and clam cakes, fish sandwiches, local lobster, homemade ice cream, and apple pie a la mode. The building itself stands on the shore, outfitted in wood shingles and an art deco-lettered sign. Aunt Carrie’s closure had little to do with coronavirus, but the restaurant now faces the dual challenges of renovation work and statewide restrictions on dining. At press time, Foy couldn’t pinpoint a precise opening date, but she hoped it would be soon. Still, Aunt Carrie’s has survived a century of events, including a World War and a handful of hurricanes. Foy has bundles of photographs depicting the restaurant through the decades, and the story of Aunt Carrie’s extends far beyond her own bloodline. “The love stories that have started here are also amazing,” she says. “That’s what I want to celebrate. Everyone already knows me and my family. It’s time to celebrate everyone else.” Narragansett, AuntCarriesRI.com

Aw, Shucks! Oysters are the pearl of Rhode Island shellfish, and you can still (safely) get them Oysters are the Ocean State’s pride and joy, and our appetite for them grows exponentially during the summer months. These days you can even pick them up directly from South County fishermen. Naturally, all of these companies are taking extra precautions to safely deliver their product to oyster fans. Most will provide curbside pickup, and some will even deliver them to your door. If you want to visit in person, you can do so – but please, for Neptune’s sake, wear a mask. Don’t forget to consult The RI Oyster Trail (RIOysterTrail.com), an online guide to local oyster-mongers, which includes a handy map.
