A Wakefield nonprofit aims to make fostering or adopting a rescue dog easy with a series of events

One of many dogs seeking a permanent home through Save One Soul RHODY PET OF THE MONTH: BENEDICT

By Karen Kalunian

Benedict is what we like to call “perfectly imperfect.” He is a sweet Hound-mix puppy with a passion for everything life has to o er; he’s playful, smart, and loving. Benedict is also deaf but works hard learning the ropes. Thanks to his foster mom’s commitment, Benedict’s on his way to becoming the best boy. A unique Benedict trademark is his ear that appears flipped back, which only adds to his cuteness. If you want to give Benedict a shot at living his life to its fullest in a loving home, make an appointment to meet him by contacting Save One Soul Animal Rescue League. The name may be Save One Soul (SOS) Animal Rescue League, but since its founding in 2014, this dynamic South County rescue has actually saved over 4,000 furry souls! It’s a remarkable accomplishment, but, as adoption counselor Trisha Hlastawa explains, their challenges are also numerous.

“Our partner rescues in southern states are at a crisis point with unprecedented numbers of animals desperately in need of shelter and care,” says Hlastawa. “There are so many truly great dogs of all ages and sizes, and we are determined to find them loving homes in Rhode Island.”

A nonprofit group of dedicated volunteers enlisting the help of community partners and folks eager to open up their home to a foster dog companion, SOS’s mission is centered around finding permanent homes for abandoned and at-risk pets. With a notable reduction in adoption applications recently even as more pups come in, they’re sending out an SOS for households who can be a safe harbor for these pooches in need. Here are some of the ways you can get up close and paw-sonal with SOS dogs (in their signature red bandanas) this month:

FERRY TO NEWPORT

If you’ve been waiting for the summer crowds to sail away from Newport, this is the ideal date to head over the bridge. SOS is holding a mini adoption event at The Black Dog General Store, with 20 percent of all sales going to the rescue – a great chance to stock up on gifts for your dog-loving friends. Plus, spend $100 or more, and you’ll be entered into a ra e to win a goodie-filled tote. 33 Bannister’s Wharf, September 10, 11am-3pm

ZOOM IN

Enjoy five minutes of screentime with adoptable dogs via Zoom appearances in their current foster homes. This Virtual Adoption Event is a great way to get real insight into how they would behave in your own home.

BARK ON THE BEACH

Mark your calendars for Animal Rescue Rhode Island’s 11th Annual Bark on the Beach fundraising walk on sunny, sandy Narragansett Beach on September 24 from 9-11am. For $25, you’ll be entered in the milelong walk, with free refreshments, fun competitions, and a blissful blessing of the animals! AnimalRescueRI.org
