See works from Painters Over Light at their group show on October 19, like Pati Silvia's painting “Lunch at the National”
ARTISTS ASSEMBLE Painters Over Light shares breakfast, art, and now a show Imagine this: several artists-turned-friends gathered around a table at T’s Restaurant in Narragansett, huddled over art, breakfast food, and lots of coffee. This humble ritual marked the start of Painters Over Light, an eclectic group of artists dedicated to sharing creative feedback like they do their breakfast. “For most artists, sharing your work can be a time of great excitement, but also great vulnerability,” says group leader Kevin Richard, who details the artists’ first encounter at a Wickford Art Association painting workshop led by Anthony Tomaselli, their group mentor. “We soon felt that being part of a group had a transcendent quality, something greater than ourselves. We each maintain our individuality but share a common core through the creative process.” Painters Over Light is comprised of 13 members: Anthony Tomaselli, Kevin Richard, David Bosworth, Susan Dansereau, Shar Hyland,
Lorraine Hynes, Tory Kohn, Didem Kokturk, Stephen Schultz, Pati Sylvia, Jill Tyler, Christine Webb, and most recently, watercolorist Bill Lane. Each artist brings a different technique or school of thought; there is no one style or subject. “The group is not driven by competition, nor does it have an exclusionary point of view about the art world,” explains Richard. There is only one caveat: the group must never extend beyond the limits of their breakfast booth. After four years, Painters Over Light will finally debut together in a group art show at OneWay Gallery in Narragansett on October 19. They intend to display over 80 paintings for guests to enjoy alongside food, drink, music, and conversation. Says Richard, “RI has a history of being rich in artistic expression and we hope to honor this tradition.” Facebook: Painters Over Light - Megan Schmit

Art for All Nancy Scelsa encourages you to embrace your inner artist at Nancy Stephen Gallery and School of Art In a nonstop world, it’s sometimes hard to make time for one’s passions, or even know how to find them. In the heart of East Greenwich, however, Nancy Scelsa has created a space for all passions to run wild. The Nancy Stephen Gallery and School of Art has been tapping into the artistic minds of students of all ages for 23 years – and shows no signs of stopping. “What is important to me is that nobody is turned away,” Scelsa explains, “Art should be
available to everyone interested.” In the mid-1990s, Scelsa was faced with the decision to either continue as a high school art instructor or to follow her dream of opening her own space. “It was always an art school for me more than a gallery,” Scelsa says, as her vision began during her time at Paier College of Art. After receiving her degree in graphic arts and teaching art for years following, she knew her passion needed a home to thrive.
Named in love and honor of Scelsa’s late brother, the Nancy Stephen Gallery and School of Art first opened its doors in 1993. Since then, Scelsa makes it her goal to find new ways to challenge both her students and herself as an instructor. She stresses, however, that her role as an instructor is to unveil what is already there. “I don’t give you talent,” she explains. “What I do is instruct you and pull that out so you can further your creative process.” Offering scholarships year-round that are dispersed on a need basis, Scelsa is dedicated to anyone who shows an interest in the

arts. Her students’ creations line the walls of the studio rooms: paintings, drawings, and sculptures from students aged five to 92. “Everyone experiences their artistic journey differently,” she says. “The Nancy Stephen Gallery is a home for everyone.” With students traveling from opposite ends of Rhode Island and beyond, Scelsa will occasionally face doubtful students questioning whether or not they “have the talent.” Her response? “Well, do you have the interest? Then you do have it.” East Greenwich, NancyStephenArtSchool.com –Ava Callery

History Repeated Charlestown travels back to 1776 at Amos Greene Farm
Amos Greene Farm sits on 70 of its original hundreds of acres, a picturesque setting complete with pastures, rock walls, woods, and a shingled colonial dwelling. The farm once belonged to Captain Amos Greene, Jr. in the eighteenth century. The property was built by his father, and when Greene, Jr. was a King’s County (what is now the South County area) militia captain, he used it as a muster ground for his men to practice drills. Today, parts of the Amos Greene Farm are owned by Carla and Russ Ricci, and the rest, gifted in December 2005, is preserved by the Charlestown Land Trust. The farm remains one of the few undisturbed pre-revolutionary settings left in the country. “When you travel down the dirt path, you’re traveling back hundreds of years to

the birth of our nation,” says Stu Redish, event organizer and member of the Charlestown Historical Society. Alongside President Pamela Lyons and Board of Director Alan Angelo, Redish is involved in the annual militia reenactment held on the farm, which this year will take place on October 6. “It makes history come to life,” says Redish, whose favorite part of the event is hearing the musket fire. “It’s pretty dramatic.” Dramatic, and authentic. Eighty troops supplied by the Brigade of the American Revolution (led by their troop commander, Providence College’s Professor Emeritus Norm Desmarais) camp out over the weekend in canvas tents, cook over open fires, and wear period costume – rain or shine. This month, Amos Greene Farm will burst back to life with their third “Raid on
Charlestown” reenactment. While Charlestown never saw any major Revolutionary War battles, Redish explains, raids by the British were common in South County. The day is complete with a salute to Captain Amos Greene, Jr.’s grave, live drummer and fifer, demonstrations by a weaver and blacksmith, reading of the Declaration of Independence, and intermittent skirmishes between British and French and American soldiers. Redish believes the event is a one-of-akind opportunity to learn about history in a more meaningful way: “There’s a difference between studying history in books and experiencing this ‘living history.’” In the case of Amos Greene Farm, he gushes, “You’re really seeing what it would’ve been like in 1776.” Charlestown, Facebook: Charlestown Historical Society -Megan Schmit

Providence Northern creates a miniature world for their model trains
Strong Ties
Photography by Robert Isenberg
The Providence Northern Model Railroad Club builds miniatures and community in Warwick Providence Northern is a world of hills and forests, small towns and railroad depots, where trains ease across bridges and illuminate tunnels with their headlights. There are factories and cottages, gas pumps and traffic signals – and it all fits into the second story of an old grange in Warwick. “We all like trains,” says John Breitmaier, a leading member of the Providence Northern Model Railroad Club. “Some people just want to run the trains. Others want to build them.” True to its name, the club was founded in Providence in 1994. About 12 years ago, the club moved to this century-old social club in Warwick. Shortly after their move, though, neighborhood kids started an accidental fire, damaging the structure. This delayed construction of their new railroad by a year,
but it also enabled Breitmaier and his fellow modelers to carefully design its layout. The club is also a nonprofit organization and education center, and the public is welcome to stop in any Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Behind a heavy wood door, visitors enter a labyrinth of miniature landscapes and narrow walkways. The club claims 35 to 40 standing members, who use the elaborate digital system to navigate trains through simulated countryside and busy railyards. “It’s very diverse,” says Breitmaier of his fellow members. “We have guys with doctorates. We’ve got firemen. We’ve got truck drivers.” And Breitmaier himself? He was a conductor for the actual railroad – for 40 years. He worked with passenger trains, organizing the cars and seeing to their cleaning and
maintenance. As a child, Breitmaier assembled model trains with his father; later, he revived the pastime with his own children. For the club, he’s helped design the vivid scenery that makes the models so photorealistic. Breitmaier is proud of the laidback communal atmosphere and the chance to simply tinker. “I’m definitely a better modeler now than when I started,” he says. “I didn’t know how to solder or wire electronics. We give everybody free range. You get your own key, you can come when you want to. If you want to be here at two in the morning, running trains, knock yourself out. I’ve heard at other clubs, you have to be a member for a year before you can even come in on your own. They don’t want you touching anything. Here, we do it all in fun.” Warwick, ProvidenceNorthern.com –Robert Isenberg

When a tragic fire gutted the Meadowbrook Waldorf School (MWS) in July, the Richmond community immediately knew that rebuilding the beloved school would be in their future. The school, founded in 1979, educates over 140 students ages pre-K to grade 8 through a unique, disciplinary curriculum approach. Situated on 28 acres of beautiful landscape, MWS unites academics, arts, movement, practical work, and a deep respect for the natural world. While the cause of the fire that destroyed the school is still under investigation, the community response has been uplifting. With various school districts providing furniture like desks and chairs, retail chains like Home Depot and Staples donating essential supplies, and local businesses and organizations hosting fundraising events to benefit their GoFundMe page, which has already exceeded its initial goal of $150,000, MWS is on the fast track to reopening.
In the meantime, since the school year started on September 4, classes have been held at the South Road School in South Kingstown, where they plan to stay for one year with the option to extend their stay month by month. Beth Riungu, Development Coordinator of MWS, says “the rebuild team hopes to be swinging hammers in January 2019 and moving back in January 2020.” MWS plans to reconstruct on the remaining foundation with the potential for an extension. Since going back to school, MWS administrators, teachers, and parents have helped students cope with the loss by sharing stories and artwork with messages of overcoming adversity. Both show students the unexpected opportunities that come with change, courage, and kindness. Riungu is grateful for all of the volunteers – including the professionals leading the rebuild process – for their dedication and support.

CROSSWYNDS NEWPORT 6 West Marlborough Street Newport / 367-2255
With regards to the specifics of the rebuild, Riungu assures that student safety will come first, and any recommendations resulting from the fire’s investigation will be incorporated. The school will also not rush any decisions about purchases: “The Waldorf education strives to surround children with beauty and organic materials that stand the test of time,” says Riungue. “What we buy now will last for generations of students.” “MWS is a community [and] the students look forward to being with their teachers and classmates, playing at recess, and celebrating the same traditions they have always known,” expresses Riungu. To them, MWS wasn’t lost – just the building. MeadowbrookSchool.com – Caroline Boyle

Once upon a time, there was a fanciful, fairytale themed amusement park nestled in the woods of Hope Valley. It opened in 1971 to eager patrons and their children, boasting shiny recreations of nursery rhyme characters like Humpty Dumpty, a petting zoo, and kid-friendly rides like a mini roller coaster, bumper cars, and merry go round. Back in the day, it must’ve been every child’s dream to see that bright blue billboard sign on the roadside, The Enchanted Forest of Rhode Island written large in yellow script. Today, the park is anything but enchanting. After attendance dropped, it closed its doors in 2005 and has lay empty and neglected ever since. Thick brush, weeds, and groping tree roots have reclaimed the park for itself so that now only portions of its former splendor peek through the greenery: cracked asphalt remnants of a go-kart track, a chipped picket fence resembling broken teeth, a gutted red barn vandalized with spray paint, and that massive sign now faded and cast in ominous shadow. “Periodically, I go there,” said the last owner-operator Harold Fera to the Providence

Journal in 2013. “I’m still sad about it.” Fera is most widely known for owning Rockwell Amusements, the state’s beloved traveling amusement company that’s still going strong today. When he closed the park, he auctioned off most of the rides and placed the property up for sale. While the park is deserted, it is not forgotten. For many Rhode Islanders, Enchanted Forest might have been their first amusement park experience; they might remember slipping in the slide down the Old Woman’s Shoe or screaming with delight on the kiddie coaster. It wasn’t the mainstream tourist trap touting pricey tickets and industrial, overcrowded rides; instead, it took the best of your childhood storybooks and tucked it into a little Rhode Island forest. That forest, once the perfect setting for a fairytale, now adds to the desolate, ghostly air of the park, to be appreciated only by glances thrown out of traveling cars on Route 3. That blue billboard sign protruding from undergrowth is the last trace of the park’s former life, until it, too, is swallowed by the thicket. –Megan Schmit

Curtains up on the
New Gamm As the first new season since leaving Pawtucket is about to begin, the theater reveals the perks of its new spot By Marrissa Ballard Photography by Savannah Barkley for So Rhode Island
“It certainly has a lot of potential for something beyond the usual,” is how Tony Estrella, Artistic Director, introduces the new Warwick location of the Gamm Theatre. In the lobby, they’ve moved the Box Office close to the door and left a small stage in the corner for entertainment acts. Further into the building, Estrella describes all their new amenities: from multi-stall bathrooms and parking to administrative offices and studios. Inside the actual theater, they’ve removed the proscenium arch and built the main stage out. For Gamm shows, they’ll curtain off the rest of the space to create a bigger version of their famous black box. The remainder beyond the curtain will be saved as an opportunity for other artists or organizations to rent for their events, which will add another resource for arts organizations around the state. “What’s important is that in recreating the box, we keep that same intimacy, but we grow. The artists and audience will be more comfortable, and we’ve got more volume,” says Estrella. “It’s
pretty simple, but I think the dual-use is going to be pretty dynamic.” These expanded dimensions will add more depth and height to the space, allowing for more creative freedom when it comes to set design. Right off of the stage is a scene shop where they’ll be able to build pieces and bring them out, rather than building on the actual stage. “Our designers [were] brilliant about overcoming the limitations of the Pawtucket box, but this is giving them a little more room to make their visions happen,” says Estrella. “That’s going to be the biggest change onstage.” Oliver Dow, Managing Director, discusses some of the other changes they’ve made, including the addition of a lighting grid. “It’s a fantastic building with a lot of ability to grow in years to come,” he says. On the upper floors, they discovered unfinished rooms that will be converted into rehearsal space. “A lot of the big work was done, so most of what we had to do was finish it.”
The Gamm's first production in their new space, Tennessee Williams' Night of the Iguana, opens on October 11. Photo courtesy of Gamm Theatre.
Of course, both Estrella and Dow admit that with a project this size, they’ve had to make tough choices. “There’s a lot that could be done, but our goal is to work from the inside out and really make it better for us as an organization,” says Dow. “The key is to make our transition smooth and really learn the space before we make drastic changes.” The team is also on a tough deadline, with their first show, Night of the Iguana, opening on October 11. Despite this, they’re both excited for the opening. “I’m most looking forward to the new experience, the challenge, the ability to give our artists what they need, and having our audience see the space,” Dow says. “Really, more than anything, it’s what happens on stage that really matters.” Estrella shares similar sentiments. “I can’t wait for the audience to come in and walk around and go into the space in a different way. There will be enough of a relationship to the old Gamm that it’ll be ‘oh this is them, but better.’” As for community involvement, they’re excited to continue their well-loved initiatives in Warwick. “This space gives us a central location that makes us a bit more of a statewide organization just by geography alone,” says Estrella. “The impact for Warwick is continuing to have a cultural institution that’s doing serious art.” The plan is to continue and expand their current literacy programs to provide arts education in public schools. “We need Warwick to know that we’re as much a community partner as their YMCA, their food banks, their local businesses,” he continues. “I love the fact that we’re here as the airport is expanding as well; it’s a very exciting time to be a part of it.” Looking to Season 34, the Gamm has planned a full range of riveting shows to play in the new space. “Thematically, we discuss issues and things that are happening in society,” Estrella says. “Right now, there’s a lot of concern about politics, and people are asking – how do we survive? How do we
get through this? So, all of the stories are about what happens when a crisis hits.” Many of the season’s picks ask questions about how we are meant to flourish in desperate times. The opening show, Tennessee Williams’ Night of the Iguana, was a deliberate choice that Estrella felt could best introduce the Warwick theater. “It’s the story of a refuge in the forest in which this minister has a nervous breakdown, running from his problems,” he explains. “It’s also a play that’s right in the sweet spot where the name is big enough but it’s also rarely done, so audiences likely have not seen a stage performance.” From there, the season moves to Gloria, an office-style comedy with a stunning twist. “It’s kind of a metaphor for our disconnection and the consequences of that,” he says. “Not only does it shock, but it moves past that to something more substantive that gives us tools to deal with this kind of alienation.” Next are two premieres – The Night Watch, a national premiere, and Escaped Alone, which is making its New England debut. Both are intense shows that look at subjects like war, relationships, and looming catastrophes. The season will then finish with True West, a modern-day Cain and Abel tale that demonstrates how people are never as different as they might seem. Estrella hopes that the whole season galvanizes and uplifts viewers, even with the heavy subjects. “You always want to give audiences a chance to process their lives,” he says. “Art is a generative act; I always come out of a great production, no matter what it is, feeling inspired.” As for Dow, the performances remain a light at the end of a long journey. “We have much more work to do as we go on, but I look forward to our audience falling in love with it as we have.” Warwick, GammTheatre.org

Star Light, Star Bright Exploring the galaxy without traveling a single lightyear out of South County

ook! Up in the sky! No, really, we’ll wait. What’s up there? Well, in the big, cosmic scheme of things, pretty much everything. That’s a heavy concept to wrap your brain around, especially when you live in a state where anything more than 20 minutes away is considered a “hike.” Once you start measuring things in light years it really gets squirrely, but here’s the trick. The incredible, infinite wonder of the universe isn’t really as far, far away as you’d think.
This place is really amazing. Everyone goes to the beach during the day then rushes back home, but stay out there. At night it’s a whole other scene. - Mike Cohea Photojournalist

If you don’t believe us, just ask the stargazers at the Frosty Drew Observatory in Charlestown’s Ninigret Park. For them, a trip to Saturn is easier than a trip to Warwick. All they need is a clear, dark night and that big, beautiful telescope of theirs. “Every telescope has a strength and this one is fabulous for Saturn,” says observatory director Scott MacNeill. The telescope – a Meade LX200 Schmidt Cassegrain – is great for seeing the equatorial bands on Saturn, which are weather fronts within the planet’s atmosphere, the planet’s moons, and yes, those striking the rings are very clearly visible. “It blows their mind. People see pictures on the web and they say, ‘That’s great, that’s Saturn,’ but I don’t think they’re really sure what to expect,” says MacNeill. And it’s true. The best thing about the digital age we live in is that all of the wonders of the world are there for anyone to see, but what they can’t ever prepare you for is what it’s like to see a marvel of the natural world with your own eyes (with a little help of course). “When they get that view – they’re not ready to process that. Everyone has a different first reaction. Some people laugh. Some people swear. Some people cry. I’ve been kissed!” Frosty Drew sits in a wide-open park, surrounded by protected federal lands with nothing beyond but the big, wide Atlantic Ocean. What this means for stargazers is the right kind of darkness, a field of stars relatively unmarred by man-made light. You can even get a look at the Andromeda Galaxy – which will be in prime viewing over Rhode Island in October – with your naked eye. Andromeda, in fact, is the only object outside our own galaxy you can see without the aid of a telescope. Speaking of galaxies, the Milky Way is a photogenic star full of them. Photojournalist Mike Cohea has been capturing the thick band of stars and nebulae – the galactic core – with his camera for over a decade, but in the last year and a half or so has attracted the attention of wide-eyed Rhode Islanders on Instagram – follow him @mikecohea if you aren’t already and prepare to have your mind blown – with his dazzling shots of our home galaxy captured over Trustom Pond Wildlife Refuge and Block Island. “You don’t just see the Milky Way, but you see all of the planets, satellites, the International Space Station. There are a million other things to see out there,” says Cohea, who grew up an outdoorsy kid in the Pacific Northwest with appreciation for the treasures hiding in plain sight on a clear night. Ten years after moving to and falling in love with Rhode Island, he’s doing his part to share that wonder of discovery with the rest of us. “This place is really amazing. Everyone goes to the beach during the day then rushes back home, but stay out there. At night it’s a whole other scene.”

One scene in particular needs to be seen to be believed – a lovely long exposure of the Milky Way photobombed by a swarm of fireflies, their electric green lights trailing across and dotting the frame. “I’ve never seen so many fireflies. It’s one of those moments where I have to remember that I’m a professional photographer and not [lose it],” he says with a laugh. Capturing these images requires late nights and a lot of patience, meaning a solid afternoon nap and a willingness to stand out in a field for hours in the dead of night, but the results speak for themselves. Cohea also frequently turns his photographer’s eye to our nearest cosmic neighbor, the Moon. In particular, he specializes in time lapses of full moonrises and stunning stills of the moon over southern Rhode Island’s lighthouses and bridges. Using long telephoto lenses creates the optical illusion of the moon appearing larger than it does to the human eye. These shots require precise timing and positioning, often miles away from the earthbound foreground subjects. “I love sharing Rhode Island’s beauty,” says Cohea. “That’s one of the cool things about this. I think that state’s awesome, and it’s a great foreground.” For Cohea, sharing something as big and distant and weird as the Moon or a faraway part of our galaxy in the same image of something as familiar as Beavertail or the Newport Bridge boils down to one thing – communicating to others that it’s all there, if we know where and how to look for it, and it’s ours to discover. That same spirit drives the men and women who work at Frosty Drew. “We get some little Isaac Newtons,” says MacNeill. “[Kids that] come out and they’re thinking about orbital dynamics, planetary and stellar formation, and they ask questions. We try to tell every kid that’s between five and twenty years old that they’re part of an important generation. The first person to set foot on another planet is walking on Earth right now. They’re a kid, they probably don’t know it’s them, and that opportunity is available to anybody. “When I see these Isaac Newtons walk through the room I sit there and say ‘This kid could be the one to go to Mars.’ Does he even know he has that chance? Does she even know she’s got that opportunity?”

Made to Measure A passion for fabric and the planet makes Martha Jackson’s Restored by Design custom clothing a cut above Martha Jackson has always loved clothes and accessories. After years of providing direction and design for top brands, Jackson started her own business Restored by Design, where she creates or transforms apparel using authentic fabrics such as cotton, silk, or wool, and then adds details resulting in unique pieces. This is in line with the Slow Fashion movement, where fewer quality items take the place of owning a closetful of trendy clothes. Recently Jackson closed her retail studio to concentrate on bespoke dressmaking, teaching classes, and building her own collections, all from a cozy studio in Narragansett.
What is the best part of making a custom garment for someone? My favorite part of the [Made for You] process is working with a client to create a piece they love, helping them choose the elements they want to use, such as type of fabric and style, and shape to flatter. A lot of times someone has a treasured piece of fabric they want to incorporate, so I love to listen to their needs and look at the fabric and add design elements that enhance it with embellishments and details, such as trim. Sometimes they have a favorite dress they want to copy. My client is an integral part of the process.

THE NIGHT OF THE IGUANA
When did you become aware/part of the Slow Fashion movement? I have been aware of the Slow Fashion movement for nearly four years, thanks to a RISD presentation showing a film called The True Cost. I was already repurposing and “being green” thanks to a book I read about twelve years ago called Green is the New Black. This enhanced my sense of purpose since I was now aware of a global movement as passionate as me about taking responsibility for making this a better planet. Where do you get your fabrics? From a variety of places: my collected library, estate sales, GoodWill, thrift stores, consignment shops, and donations. I’m a textile “nut” often inspired by just experiencing the fabric, color, and pattern. I touch and feel – I’m not an online shopper when it comes to sourcing my raw materials. What are your favorite transitional items to wear during the fickle hot/ cold fall season? A wider cropped pant, a pair of booties, a lacy feminine blouse (finally long sleeves!), and keeping a jean jacket close by. What is an easy wardrobe item to have you repurpose? A men’s shirt made feminine with added lace, reshaping with darts and new curves. Many times I cut the collar and cuffs and reinvent it into a peasant style Boho look. I enjoy taking a top and turning it into a Boho dress by adding layers, too. I am available by appointment for design services, alterations, and creating special pieces, such as repurposed wedding gowns, patterning of your favorite dress or item, or making something you just cannot find! All giving TLC to your closet and this planet!

A military spouse uses design know-how to make a Jamestown rental feel anything but temporary
Decorators will tell you that to create stylish interiors, pieces should be accumulated over time, not hurried and purchased all at once in matchy-matchy sets. While that is certainly true of the curated look of the Jamestown home of the Marlowe family, matriarch Jewel has furnished the house on the quick. In 17 years of marriage, these current coastal digs are the twelfth address for her resilient brood of six, a military family. In Jamestown, while her husband attends Naval War College, Marlowe explains that they have lived in almost every corner of the country and have even crossed the pond to the United Kingdom. “When
Cloth-covered furniture painted in deep pigments, leafy plants, and glints of gold are elements of Jewel Marlowe’s high-end – low-cost style
someone moves that frequently you can’t help but pick up treasures along the way. What has resulted is an eclectic mix of pieces,” says Marlowe, of the decor du jour she defines as “Colorful Glam with Soul.” With each move, Marlowe

works to make each property feel like “home” without delay. Undaunted by the prospect of where they live being transitory, she sees it instead as an opportunity for experimentation. “I find a rental to be liberating, stylistically,” she says. “Since I knew it wouldn’t be forever, I felt empowered to use colors that I might normally have been too shy to tackle... a hot pink bathroom for example.” Recently, Marlowe has started a blog titled Jeweled Interiors, where she shares tips and inspiration with categories like Rental Home Inspiration, noting that with each relocation her style evolves. The Jamestown home is a spacious split-level built in the 1970s, reconfigured by its owner to double the size with an expansive entertaining space on the second floor. “The natural lighting is unbelievable,” says Marlowe, who also enjoys that the beach is
a two-minute walk away. Like many lifestyle bloggers, Marlowe is no stranger to a needle and thread or bucket of paint, and notes that ten years ago she bought a book on upholstery and has been practicing this skill ever since. “It is empowering to learn basic reupholstering and refinishing,” she says. An expert of infusing spaces with personality, Marlowe is a devotee of Tempaper, a self-adhesive, repositionable wallpaper that can add pattern and panache as easily as it can be removed. Trademarks of Marlowe’s style include antiques “mashed up” against modern and contemporary pieces, noting “that unexpected tension gets me every time!” She cites her days buying and reselling at the British furniture auctions as formative to her aesthetic, recognizing that it was during this time she discovered how she could be
equally smitten with both a weighty Victorian bow-front dresser and a clean-lined mid-century teak credenza. “I probably have England to blame for my eclectic style and decorating obsession,” she muses. Vintage shops and Craigslist are go-to sources for Marlowe, who not only found a zebra rug in nearby Providence for $100 but took a road trip to retrieve a pair of vintage Nordstrom dressing room sofas for $100 total. Seeing beyond their metallic olive-green leather to their intricate details and craftsmanship, she brought them home and fearlessly painted the set a dark navy blue using Annie Sloan Chalk Paint®. She also uses paintable wallpaper to modify rooms in a non-permanent way.

Textures play an important role in Marlowe’s style and she gravitates toward lush textiles like velvet and silk. Items like curtains and art are among the accents she uses to make her imprint on spaces along with leafy plants. “As a renter I find that plants are the most impractical, yet most desirable ‘splurge’ in a room. I can’t take them with me, but I certainly enjoy them while I can.” Follow Jewel Marlowe’s adventures at JeweledInteriors.com

There I was, floating inside a space capsule filled with the saltiest water I’d ever touched, and all I could think was “I wish it was darker in here.” The space capsule, of course, wasn’t really a capsule - nor was it in outer space. It was a sensory deprivation tank at Float, a wellness center in Warwick that’s part spa, part fitness studio, and part new age energy work center, all towards the purpose of connecting you to your best (and best feeling) self. I started my day at Float with aura photography, where a sensor reads your bio-data and gives you a visual representation of what’s going on with your energy. Think of it like the “before” picture of how I was feeling and a baseline of where my head (and heart and mind) were. As a disclaimer: I believe in the power of energy work and the importance of a connection with the higher self. I meditate - sometimes, not as much as I want to - and I pay a lot of attention to what’s going on inside
myself. So, when Colleen Crowley took a look at my aura and told me where my problem areas were, I wasn’t surprised at all. Too much happening in the heart and throat chakras, not enough in the areas where my sense of selfworth and my sense of grounding live. After, I went into a reiki session with Float co-owner Letitia Latek. Reiki is the Japanese art of balancing the body’s energies - boosting positive energy and clearing negative energy - through touch. As she worked, Letitia talked to me about working through my imbalances. I was already feeling pretty Zen, but I definitely felt lighter and more clear-headed afterwards. Maybe it sounds a little “out there” to you, but whether or not reiki actually works to dispel negativity from your life, the important part is that I believe that it did, and I felt positive benefits from it. So maybe it is all in my head - but isn’t everything anyway? Then, it was time to float. Float therapy is, at its simplest, a long soak in saltwater. But

it’s a lot more than that. You’re inside a pod where all you can hear is soothing music, all you can see is dim mood lighting, and all you can feel is total weightlessness. The water is saturated with Epsom salt to the point that it has the density of the Dead Sea - meaning that when I tried to submerge myself fully, I couldn’t. You float on top of the water, not in it. The idea is that you float in this tank with no real stimulus around you, and you fully relax your mind and go into a meditative state. At least, I did. I even shut off the lights inside the pod because I wanted a more immersive experience. Aside from the mental benefits, there are physical ones too: better sleep, relief from pain, lower blood pressure and cortisol levels. I already enjoy meditation, so it was easy for me to shut off my mind - but before I was even done with my first session I knew I wanted to go back for more. After floating, I had a myofascial release massage with Robin Tanguay. Myofascial release isn’t the scented-oils kind of massage. It’s about applying pressure to areas of pain in the body and holding that pressure for long enough for the body’s fascia (the tissue that holds muscle in place) to release that tightness. It’s a deeper level of massage, and one that I really feel has deep benefits to my body. I leave a massage feeling relaxed. I leave myofascial release feeling like I’ll have long-term relief of that particular pain. I asked Robin to work on my ankle, which had been hurting lately for no good reason, and my low back, which had been hurting, oh, forever. In the week since I’ve had it done, I haven’t felt pain in either area. So needless to say, my aura was in much better shape after Float than before it. But I didn’t need a photograph to tell me that. My sense of relaxation, of inner peace and of connection to my higher self all clued me in to what a beneficial day I had had.

ARE YOUR INVESTMENTS IN LINE WITH YOUR VALUES?
Wouldn’t planning your future be easier with a trusted advisor by your side?
How are the companies you invest in impacting our society and environment? In the 1970s, during the Vietnam War and apartheid in South Africa, investors tried to prevent their money from supporting policies they did not agree with. Since then, socially responsible investing has continued to evolve and incorporate modern day concerns. According to the US SIF Foundation, Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) investing has grown by over 200% in the past decade. Today, many businesses, foundations, hospitals, colleges, universities and individuals continue to encourage investment strategies that incorporate responsible business and environmental practices.
What is Socially Responsible Investing?
Mission-related, sustainable, responsible, and even “green” investing are examples of the terms used to describe a Socially Responsible Investment (SRI) strategy. Some mutual funds can offer socially conscious investment options. The funds can be domestic, international, global or broad-based investing in multiple sectors, from green bonds and equities to balanced funds. Part of a mutual fund company’s SRI strategy is to incorporate ESG factors in their analysis of potential portfolio holdings. ESG factors include issues like climate change, human rights, clean water and energy, and business ethics. An ESG analysis is a way for companies to not only be screened based on finances, but on specific measures that can have a positive impact on society.
Kathleen Ringler is committed to understanding your challenges and goals, and to developing customized, comprehensive financial plans that align with your hopes for the future. Give her a call at 860-572-4047, or visit chelseagroton.com to understand the benefit of working with a seasoned financial advisor who will work with you every step of the way.
When thinking about investment options, consider investing in companies whose ESG factors align with your personal values. SRI does not require forgoing competitive returns. In fact, investing in businesses that want to positively impact society may provide you with a competitive return, while shaping the world for generations to come. Investors should be aware that a lack of diversification within a portfolio may limit returns. If you’re interested in learning more about socially responsible investing, and to see if it could fit into your overall investment strategy, contact Kathleen Ringler, Chelsea Groton Vice President, Infinex Investments, Inc. Narragansett Avenue in Jamestown has quietly become home to Jamestown’s restaurant row. Between Simpatico, Jamestown FiSH, J22, the Pink Pig, and the Narragansett Cafe, you are sure to find something delicious to eat. Yet the grand dame of Jamestown restaurants is Simpatico. Allured by the charm of its twinkling lights and sprawling restaurant, I brought a friend along to experience a quintessential Jamestown night. Simpatico has long held its spot on Narragansett. Since 2013, the restaurant has been owned by Amy Barclay (who started as a busser at Simpatico in 1993) and Newport’s Ben Brayton. Originally known as Trattoria Simpatico, the new owners dropped Trattoria from the name and renovated the space. The restaurant is a series of small rooms, sprawling terraces, and nooks easy to lose yourself in. On the Saturday night we visited, the restaurant was hopping. Rather than wait for a table, we settled into seats around the upstairs bar. The trees surrounding the restaurant provided a sense of seclusion. Downstairs is more open to the street, perfect for people watching. The doors were all open and the sea breeze blew through.
We started with two cocktails – the Hendricks Refresher and the Blood Orange Spritz ($13). My Hendricks Refresher was made with Hendrick’s gin, elderberry, cucumber, and lime with a splash of soda. It hit the spot on such a warm night. My friend’s Blood Orange Spritz was a mixture of Stoli Ohranj, triple sec, lime juice, blood orange juice, and finished with a spritz of soda. Food allergies are tricky. I have been allergic to coconut oil for a good 10 years now. My options for appetizers were limited, but I had been craving a Wedge Salad, so I went with that. I could have eaten the gorgonzola dressing with a spoon, and the salad itself was a hefty portion of iceberg lettuce sprinkled with a smattering of grape tomatoes, diced peppers, diced red onion, crumbled bacon, and sliced hard-boiled egg. My friend ordered the No Frills Calamari. The Calamari Antipasto is the dish that has garnered the most attention, but my friend just wanted the calamari, sans all of the accompaniments. The calamari tubes were perfectly fried with a side of marinara for dipping. My friend was also asked if she would like to add some banana peppers, which she gratefully did.
Glazed Salmon
Even with my allergy, when it came time for entrees, I had plenty of options. The menu is all over the place with Mediterranean, Asian, and American cooking styles. We did think it was funny how our server mentioned several times not to order the chicken, because customers complained it was dry. Being so close to Narragansett Bay, I thought the Swordfish seemed like the best option. I was given a huge piece of well-cooked swordfish; the chef was able to get a nice sear on it, and the fillet was served over a white bean ratatouille. My friend went with the customer favorite, Glazed Salmon. The salmon filet was coated with a strong, maple-soy glaze and served with a small portion of jasmine rice and sautéed vegetables. All of the desserts were off limits to me, but I did catch a glimpse at the menu. I was most intrigued by the Chocolate Sushi. Sushi and chocolate are two of my favorite things. In this version, a chocolate truffle is rolled in toasted coconut and then served with caramelized banana, strawberry cocoa sauce, and chopsticks.

Sweet Success
“How do you describe a spritzer that’s sweetened with maple but doesn’t taste like your morning pancakes?” It’s questions like this that face the new CEO of MapleMama Beverages, LLC, Jeff Weston. This Bristol native recently returned to the Ocean State for a quasi-retirement after a successful 20-plus-year career in sparkling beverages. MapleMama was founded in Wendell, MA by parents Joe Laur and Sara Schley, who wanted to create a healthier alternative to soda for their kids. They weren’t trying to discover a niche market between unsweetened seltzer and soda loaded with refined sugars; but that’s exactly what they did.

After extracting the low-glycemic sugars from the sap, you get a sweetener that is packed with 54 anti-oxidants, is gluten-free, and is a natural anti-inflammatory. Throw in organic, non-GMO, and sustainable growing practices, and they’re ticking all the boxes. (Maples can be tapped annually for their full 300-year life span but sugar cane fields are burned after harvest.) The two original flavors of Fair Trade Vanilla and Cold Brew Coffee were joined by two of Weston’s collaborations: a tart Raspberry Lime and a peppery Ginger Lemon. With a switch from glass packaging to 11.5-ounce “sleek cans” planned for late 2018, two new flavors slated for 2019, a
website redesign scheduled, and the building of a Rhode Island-based sales team on his plate, it’s clear that Weston’s definition of quasi-retirement doesn’t involve slowing down any time soon. Currently stocked at Whole Foods supermarkets across the state, you can use the “Find Us” feature on their website to locate more stores close to you. Locally, you can find MapleMama at Albie’s Place in Kingston, Roch’s Fresh Foods in Narragansett, and McQuade’s Marketplace in Jamestown. So, run out to try the only sparkling beverage sweetened with maple; it’ll be the only time a tree will ever hug you back. MapleMamaBeverages.com –Ann O’Neill

People may go to Matunuck to sit by the water and enjoy the beach, or to catch the ferry to Block Island from Point Judith, or maybe even to visit the famous oyster bar. But once summer is over and the tourists pack up their beach umbrellas for the season, the true Rhode Islander knows that Matunuck still has fun in store. The Taste of Southern Rhode Island will return to Clark Farms, an epicurean evening with over 40 vendors, from Tapped Apple Winery and Back 40 to Whalers Brewing Company and George’s of Galilee. Sample food, beer, and wine from some of the more revered culinary experts in South County. Presented by the Southern RI Chamber of Commerce, this year’s event is expected to draw 1,000 attendees. While Thursday promises to be all about the food and drink, Friday night is all about the dance floor. Make sure to wear your dancing shoes as the band Sugar plays. But don’t worry if you just like to tap your toes and listen with a plateful of goodies or maybe a cocktail, there will be a cash bar and plenty of food available. October 18, Clark Farms, Matunuck. Cheese, Please A new gourmet shop in Westerly imports treats from all over the world

SORhodeIsland.com • October 2018
How do you teach people about foods they maybe haven’t tried before? Our goal when opening The Cheese Corner was to give Westerly a cheese shop where education and customer service are a priority. We encourage our customers to ask questions about the cheeses and take a small taste of almost anything. They can keep track of the cheeses on note cards that are kept on file near the cash register, and on their next visit they can retrieve their card to see what they have purchased in the past. We try to locate hard-to-find
products for our customers to add to our inventory, and we can also recommend great wine pairings from next door. Where do you find all your insanely delicious cheeses? We use an International Food Distributor, we started with a base and have brought in cheeses that our customers have asked for. We also take part in an air pre-order program where we get specialty cheeses that have been flown in from Italy and France - but the

There’s only one thing better than wine: wine and cheese together. So when Lisa Vuono, co-owner of Dick’s World of Wines, and Paula LaBarre, a manager at the store, started thinking about new projects, it was only natural they’d venture into gourmet cheese. The Cheese Corner, which opened at the beginning of the summer, is their new store, carrying delicious - but not at all pretentious - gourmet foods. We sat down to talk cheese plates and international surprises.
Look Your Best This Fall Season! surprise is that we never know what we’re going to get until we get it. Walk us through your ideal cheese plate. What would be on it? Lisa: Yum - where do we start? I love sheep and goat milk cheeses - some of my favorites are Billie’s Goat Cheddar, Bonne Bouche, and LaTur to name a few - and I like to add some fig spread, cranberry and orange crackers, and a great bottle of wine. Paula: I like to use a variety of milks and textures, and cheeses with different colors as well. Add some pâté, olives, nuts, crackers, and a cluster of grapes, and you’re good to go! You’ve also got a great local selection. We do! From Rhode Island, we carry Dipollino’s Supri, and gifts from Kay Dee Designs and Vuono’s Handwoven Baskets. From Connecticut, we’ve got foods from StoneWall Apiary, Farm True Ghee, Melinda Mae Cheese, and Capizzano’s Olive Oils. Besides cheese, what other delicious edibles will we find at the store that you can’t find elsewhere locally? We have a great selection of artisan crackers, chocolates from Knipschildt Chocolatier in New York City, and bread from A&M Bronx Baking, along with a unique selection of jams, jellies, and chutneys to accompany your cheeses.

How much cheese do you eat every day? No judgement here. Lisa: I have to admit that I probably eat three to four on most days. We try to bring new cheeses in weekly and being a newbie to owning a store I need to refresh my taste buds to remind myself what different cheeses taste like. Paula: I have to stop myself from eating cheese all of the time - I try to limit myself to tasting the new cheeses when they come in - and treat myself to a cheese platter every once in a while.

South County Scenes Galilee Homecoming
Fishing boat Second Wind returning home through the Port of Galilee on a beautiful day. This is such a great spot to sit and watch boats of all types coming into port. If you get here at the right time you’ll even see the Block Island Ferry make its way through. Submitted by Sue McIntosh. Follow her on Instagram at @suemc11
