Carrying a Torch Beavertail Lighthouse turns to the community to help keep the light on As the third oldest lighthouse in North America, Beavertail Lighthouse has more than its share of history. Preserving and sharing that history is no easy task, but it’s one that the all-volunteer Beavertail Lighthouse Museum Association (BeavertailLight.org) is willing to take on. Since restoration efforts began in 2004, museum visits have nearly doubled to 32,000 annually, and the museum space has tripled. “While most of the rehabilitation has been accomplished, the age of the buildings and the relentless weather on an exposed site means there is always more to do,” says Nicole Contino, a member of the

museum’s board of directors. “We believe in this work of protecting Beavertail Light, an icon of Jamestown.” To keep that work going for years to come, the museum is raising money through a one-time donation campaign. With local historian James Buttrick pledging to match donations up to $500,000, the BLMA will create an endowment fund for maintaining the lighthouse. So far, $218,000 has been raised and donations are being accepted through the end of the year on the museum’s website and at GoFundMe.com/Beavertail.

Fly the Presidential Skies The only Air Force One replica has landed at Quonset Airport

Rhode Island has yet another quirky claim to fame: the first-ever fully functioning Air Force One replica exhibit, which has opened at Quonset Airport in North Kingstown after two years of anticipation. What was once a cargo-carrying Evergreen 747 has been stripped down and given the ultimate makeover to become the Air Force One Experience (AirForceOneExperience.com), built entirely to the specifications of the official White House in the Sky. The entire remodel took place at Quonset, chosen for its long runway and close proximity to the bay, both vital conveniences for the soon-to-be-traveling traveling exhibit. The project was created by The Children’s Democracy Project, which aims to teach children the importance and value of democracy in new and exciting ways.

18

SORhodeIsland.com • November 2017

A highlight of the experience for the exhibit’s organizers has been seeing how excited kids become about democracy and government after seeing it. The remodeled plane features official and fully functional replicas of the conference room, the medical annex, a separate private presidential office, the famously photographed hallway between the press corps and meeting rooms and the presidential quarters for the first family and POTUS to catch some Zs at 40,000 feet. Phase two will involve recreating the second half of the plane beyond the famous hallway, where the current exhibit ends. Unfortunately we have to share the exhibit, which will soon be heading off on a national adventure to inform visitors beyond the Ocean State. –Emily Lemieux

Entrepreneur Bryce McGillivray proves you don’t have to live in the Big Apple to find a place in the fashion industry. With the help of social media, the 24-year-old co-founder of Narragansett-based tech accessory company Fifth and Ninth (FifthandNinth.com) has turned the company into a successful lifestyle brand. Fifth and Ninth designs unique smartphone cases and accessories like the BeautyBank, a compact mirror/phone charger. In just over a year, the style-conscious company had caught the attention of media influencers like professional makeup artist Vlada Haggerty and created co-branded partnerships with industry names like Ted Baker. Bryce credits her experience in public relations as a motivator for Fifth and Ninth’s creative direction. “Females are really harsh out in NYC in this industry, so that’s made me want to create a business that aspires to be kind, and motivating, and push girls to want to be successful.” She shares her story with students at her alma mater, University of Rhode Island, where she finds many of Fifth and Ninth’s employees and interns. “They have the most brilliant ideas,” she says. “I’ve realized that you don’t need to be in New York City to come up with all of these awesome, innovative designs.” –Emily Buonaiuto

Bill Padien understands the balance of life, work and art. On a course from east to west to east, Block Island called him back to paint scenes unchanged for generations. For Bill, the island is a daily inspiration amidst bustling seasonal demands of time, energy and patience; his expressions of land and water begin when summer ends. After graduating from URI and the OTIS Art Institute/Parsons School of Design, Bill was hired in 1981 as assistant curator at Los Angeles’ Gemini G.E.L. From day one he was introduced to exploratory artists at the iconic fine art printmaking studio and workshop. Conversations were inspirations; even so many years later he recalls all their names without pause. After eight years, Bill moved to Manhattan, then to Block Island, with his easel, pursuing new opportunities in color. “The light on Block Island is completely different from the light in L.A.,” he says. He tended bar, married and painted. “I painted like crazy,” he says with a laugh. The island’s magnificent light changes over time, sliding over stones and walls, and helped Bill explore the union of land with sea behind fields of second-cut hay, slumping dunes tanning

beneath a late-day sun, tilting barns and stands of Spartina. Each painting of Bill’s asks the viewer to see everything – not simply tall grasses or block shapes but concepts of a total experience. For six years Bill served on the zoning board and for seventeen on the school committee. For twenty, he’s owned The Post Office Bagel Shop in busy Bridgegate Square, baking in the traditional manner. Through the high season, canvases go untouched as summer does not allow for the focus and emotional commitment Bill’s art requires. Creating is deeply personal, and finding space to develop visions is just as much of a challenge. He’s painted among his growing children, alone in a cold basement, in the late Mary Newhouse’s Sea Breeze Gallery. “I’ve been playing with color, playing with size,” Bill says. “I’m working on three, four, five, sometimes more.” Longtime friend and artist Ellsworth Kelly remains an inspiration. “He talked about color and seeing; he would draw that negative space.” Today, Bill Padien’s art balances relationships of light, color and space, so that we can experience his joy of life on Block Island. “That’s why I moved here,” he says.

Blast from the Video Game Past

WRAP UP YOUR HOLIDAY DECOR NOW AND SAVE

The public’s love for retro video games (think anything that used cartridges, and that you had to blow into to make work) grows stronger every year. We all remember the first game we fired up, which is why the Rhode Island Computer Museum (RIComputerMuseum.org) in North Kingstown maintains a collection of retro games and consoles for curious – and nostalgic – gamers. “Nostalgia is number one with the popularity of retro gaming, and it’s what brings people in,” says Dean Duffy, a volunteer at the museum. “However, the games from that era that were the true masterpieces of design [are] what keep the players engaged. Games like Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda are great examples of that.” The museum has the original NES, Sega Genesis and even the wood-paneled Atari 2600, plus others that can be connected for guests as needed. Their inclusion among the museum’s collections (“Gaming and computing [have] always gone hand-in-hand,” Dean points out) helps to contextualize video games within the narrative of one of the last century’s greatest technological advances. Plus, you know, who doesn’t love Super Mario Bros.? –Tony Pacitti

at least the 2023–4 season. Now, for the first time in years, URI is drawing favorable comparisons to Ed Cooley’s Providence College Friars, who joined them in the NCAA last season, but who went home without a win after falling to USC in the first four. Thanks to strong fundraising, TV deals and practice facilities, the Friars have cultivated the kind of team that makes them a regular presence in March Madness. But when the two teams meet on December 2 at the Ryan Center, it will be anyone’s game. The Friars may have a seven-year streak in their favor, but Coach Hurley has already shown that he can turn out a URI team that does the unexpected. The real question will be how his team adjusts from the incredible highs of March to the ups-and-downs of a long season. In fact, the off-season has already produced one headline that seems destined to detract, at least somewhat, from the Rams’ pre-season preparation.

O

n September 14, during a concert in the Ryan Center, assistant coach Tyron Boswell was arrested on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest and placed on administrative leave by the

university. According to the Providence Journal, he had entered the men’s bathroom to try to break up a fight that involved members of the basketball team, but “started yelling and swearing.” He was asked by the police to leave, but refused and was placed under arrest. As the team moves toward conference play, questions about the impact of losing of an assistant coach a few weeks before pre-season may percolate. After all, the high expectations for URI will soon be tested for the first time, and even those with absolute faith in Coach Hurley recognize the serious challenges of the Atlantic Conference. Conference rivals Seton Hall and Virginia Commonwealth University are expected to present major roadblocks, and St. Bonaventure boasts the only duo with a greater combined career output than Matthews and Terrell. Additionally, the team faces a long road to conference play, including opening against UNC Asheville on November 10, and shortly thereafter a face-off against Nevada, the reigning Mountain West champs. Whether these early challenges dent the momentum that carried the Rams through March may ultimately decide the team’s fate.

Photos courtesy of URI/Alex Subers

hortly before the Rams stepped out onto the Ryan Center court for their first official practice of the 2017–18 men’s basketball season, Coach Dan Hurley debuted a short video of highlights from the team’s unexpected NCAA run the previous year. Flashing clips of the Rams knocking down six-seed Creighton and taking third-seeded Oregon to within three points were the same images that had run through the players’ heads nonstop during the long off-season. They could still feel the energy of that season in their bones, and see themselves back on the court every time they took a jump shot, practiced a free throw or heard those magic words: March Madness. Luckily for URI fans, the squad that finally overcame a nearly two-decades-long NCAA drought is remarkably similar to the one that will take the court this year. The team graduated only one starter, and E.C. Matthews and Jared Terrell, both in their final year, will enter the season with the second-highest combined scoring of any two players in college basketball. Their partnership, which has produced 2,701 points over three seasons, has lifted expectations that the team is better positioned than any in recent memory. Rather than surprise observers with a run in the Atlantic-10 Tournament once again, Providence Journal sports reporter Bill Lynch predicts that the Rams will earn their spot in the NCAAs at the top of the Atlantic 10 Conference, where they finished third last year. According to Lynch, it’s obvious where the credit for the Rhody revitalization lies. “Coach Hurley did a good job early on taking over a program going in the wrong direction,” says Lynch. By offering players like Matthews and Terrell playing time from day one, he was able to attract players and cultivate the kind of team culture that produces championship runs. And, according to Lynch, “we’re seeing the results of that culture now.” Hurley, too, is seeing the results. Just a few months after the end of the season, Hurley signed a two-year contract extension – his fourth extension overall with the Rams – that will keep him in Rhode Island through

H

urley argues that by freeing the team from the specter of a 20-year drought, Rhody’s strong performance last season is not a source of stress, but rather a welcome relief. “Having that long drought, that burden became a little bit heavier ever year,” Hurley says. “Now, it’s less about the expectations of others and more about us wanting to get back, put together a great season, and get back on that stage again.” And Hurley is confident that getting back on that stage will power the team through any upcoming obstacles – even the loss of a dominant senior class in the coming year. “Our goals will be the same moving forward: try to win championships and get to the NCAA tournament,” says Hurley. That’s why Hurley showed his team the video from last year’s tournament on the very first day of practice. He understands that competing in the Big Dance is the ultimate reward for players and coaches. It drives recruitment and defines careers. And once you get a taste, nothing else is quite as satisfying.

SOUTH COUNTY BREWERY TOUR Grab a pint and meet the brewmasters behind these five local breweries By Bob Curley • Photography by Michael Cevoli

Rhode Island is a little state that sometimes has a big inferiority complex, but South County’s brewers are masters of their craft. We don’t just brew great beer down here, but nationally award-winning brews, with more being poured each year. These five breweries sell pure pleasure by the pint; the friendly mugs you’ll encounter along the way are just frosting on the glass.

SOUTH COUNTY BREWERY TOUR

WHALERS BREWING COMPANY

The fortunes of Peace Dale’s Whalers Brewing Company (WhalersBrewing. com) are definitely on the upswing: their Rise was just named the Best American Pale Ale in the U.S. at the World Beer Awards, and it seems like every bar in South County is featuring this mildly hoppy and citrusy beer on draft. Beer, not textiles, is now made and canned at the historic Palisades Mill, where Whalers presents its seasonal and “experimental” brews on tap as well as favorites like their delicious Hazelnut Stout. Kid- and family-friendly, the brewery has pool tables and lawn games to keep guests entertained, and you can order in food from local favorites like Tilly’s Cheesesteaks. Future plans include a new outdoor patio and a lot more brewing: Whalers’ production capacity has increased threefold in the last year, and the company is riding the publicity wave from the success of Rise to expand its distribution to Massachusetts and Connecticut. “We’ve definitely seen a different attitude toward our beer,” says Whalers’ co-owner Josh Dunlap. “It’s proof that there’s a lot of great beer coming out of this state, and I think that’s helping everyone.”

MEET THE BREWMASTER: JOSH DUNLAP Two tours of duty in the U.S. Marine Corps taught Josh a lot about life and a little about brewing beer: after deployment overseas he was stationed in Southern California, an early hotbed of the craft-brewing scene, where he met several fellow Marines who were into home brewing. Josh took those skills home to Rhode Island and continued brewing on the side while working as a commercial fisherman. “Fishing was a lot like the Marine Corps, with long hours and dangerous work, but it paid well and I worked with a really great group of guys,” he recalls. “When I got a day off, I’d brew a batch of beer, and when I got back from a fishing trip it would be done fermenting.” Since Josh and Wes Staschke launched Whalers in 2014, the company has transformed from a 200-square-foot brewery into a booming business with 14 employees. “I’m always going to be a fisherman in my blood, but when I was fishing I never imagined this would grow into what it is today,” he says.

TILTED BARN BREWERY Weekends at Tilted Barn Brewery (TiltedBarnBrewery.com) are a bit of a feeding frenzy, with customers lined up early at the Exeter farm to nab a precious allotment of a dozen or so cans of The Chosen One IPA or whatever else owners Matt and Kara Richardson are brewing up that week. The “tilted barn” in the name isn’t just a marketing gimmick: the barn housing the brewery dates to the 19th century and has a decided lean to it, but it’s definitely in its glory days compared to a past that included service as a woodworking shop, Christmas tree stand and shelter for livestock. Not only is Tilted Barn the only Rhode Island brewery based on a farm, support for local farmers flows through every glass and can of their beer. The hops, pumpkins, maple syrup, and spruce tips used to flavor seasonal brews are sourced onsite, peaches and raspberries used in the new Berliner Weisse come from Narrow Lane Orchards and even the yeast is native to Rhode Island.

MEET THE BREWMASTERS: MATT AND KARA RICHARDSON The Richardsons never intended to open a brewery when they purchased the Hemsley family farm from Kara’s grandparents in 2011. “The plan was to keep the Christmas tree farm in the family,” says Matt, who met Kara when the two worked together down the road at Schartner’s Farm. Tilted Barn is still very much a family operation. Matt, a passionate home brewer, launched the business in 2015 while still working a day job with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “Until March, I did 100 percent of everything” on the brewing end, says Matt, while Kara designed the labels, ran the farm and took care of the kids. The popularity of the beers has the Richardsons eyeing an expansion beyond the jam-packed barn and their current production of about 200 cases a week. But Tilted Barn will always stay down on the farm. “The experience is not being in a commercial or industrial zone but being surrounded by 30 acres of hops and trees,” says Matt. “We don’t want to be anywhere else but home.”

SOUTH COUNTY BREWERY TOUR

GRAY SAIL BREWERY Gray Sail (GraySailBrewing.com) is all about family (the company was founded by husband-and-wife team Alan and Jennifer Brinton in 2001), and that includes their Ocean State brewing kin, too. The Gray Sail Tasting Room in Westerly is the only brewery tap where you’ll find beers produced by other local companies in addition to Gray Sail’s own brews. It’s a generous policy, and one you’d expect from Jennifer, who also sits on the executive board of the Rhode Island Brewer’s Guild. But frankly, if we’re setting sail to the former home of the Westerly Macaroni Factory to drink beer, we’re going for Grey Sail’s unfiltered Flying Jenny extra pale ale or the bottle-aged Stargazer imperial stout, one of the limited-run beers you can only get at the brewery. Too far away, you say? You can find Gray Sail all over Rhode Island, and a new expansion has the brewery producing nine times more beer than it did a few years ago – with plenty of capacity to brew even more.

When Gray Sail first opened its doors on 11/11/11, Jennifer Brinton thought her role would be “supportive wife” to her husband (and fellow engineer) Alan, whose dream was to open a brewery. “I wanted nothing to do with any of it,” she says. Just a few years later, she’s the only female brewery owner in the state, although she’s not inclined to make a big deal out of it. “The guys who run these other breweries don’t care if you’re female or male,” she says. It’s just about making great beer. Still, there’s some “girl power” at work at Gray Sail: Jennifer calls her unexpected fourth child, Mary, “a blessing” in part because her pregnancy delayed the couple’s purchase of a brewery building in Connecticut just long enough for the former pasta factory to become available. And longtime brewer Michelle Kirms, one of Gray Sail’s first hires, was recently named the company’s head brewer. “She’s phenomenal,” says Jennifer.

PROCLAMATION ALE COMPANY

“The big beer from a little state” just got a lot bigger: the fun-loving brewers who promise to “strangle your taste buds with goodness” recently relocated Proclamation Ale Company (ProclamationAleCo. com) from Kingston to Jefferson Boulevard in Warwick, where they’ll have six times the beer making capacity. More taps, a greater variety of brews, and a row of pinball machines and arcade games make Proclamation’s new 15,000-square-foot home “a better experience with more room to hang out,” says founder Dave Witham, who adds, “I grew up in the ‘80s in arcades, and all of the guys who work here are gamers.” The description of Proclamation’s flagship Derivative hopped ale is typically quirky (“a unique snowflake; a Unicorn on a farm of Shetland ponies”), as are beer names like the Lovecraftian “Tendril” American IPA and the “Alpaca Magi” sour ale. “We have a pretty high threshold about quality – we will dump batches of beer,” says Dave. “But we also like to joke around about stuff and that comes through with our brand. We’re serious about what we do, but we don’t want to take ourselves too seriously.”

A New Year’s Resolution You’ll Love Start the process today to transform your kitchen in 2018. Schedule a complimentary showroom consultation or attend a free seminar. MEET THE BREWMASTER: DAVE WITHAM A bigger space with more capacity (not to mention the stress involved in moving) inevitably means more work for Dave, who launched Proclamation in 2014. “I got into this because I wanted to brew beer, but I didn’t know what running a business entails,” he says, noting that actual brewing occupies only about one day out of five in his schedule. The rest of his time is spent multitasking (“not my strong suit”) on everything from social media marketing to ordering glassware for the tasting room and ensuring that there’s enough hops to make the beer. It’s a long way from Dave’s past as a musician and music teacher. “I work 14- to 16hour days, I don’t punch out,” he says, “but it’s great that I don’t get mad about having to go to work.” Will things settle down with the move finished? Dave and his wife, Lori (the company’s graphic designer), have a preschooler at home, so perhaps not. On the other hand, Dave has chosen his crew well – among his band of brewers are a pair of drummers, a singer and a guitarist. With performance space already set aside in the new brewery, “we can get some beers off the tap and jam,” he says.

Yes, this Peace Dale–based company is nationally known for producing exquisite whiskey and gin – they were named Best Craft Distiller in America for 2017 by Whiskey Magazine – but as owner Michael Reppucci notes, “The first step in what we do is beer making.” All whiskey starts with what’s called distiller’s beer (also know as “wash”): usually a light, mostly flavorless liquid. The founding genius of Sons of Liberty was to start their distillation process with a high-quality wash and a longer fermentation period, rather than the cheap and quick beer typically used to keep costs and time commitment to a minimum. Sons of Liberty’s Uprising Whiskey starts with a stout, for example, while their Battle Cry begins life as a Belgian triple style beer. In 2016, the company acquired a brewing license and started producing more refined versions of these beers for public consumption, including pairing beers with their whiskey cousins at the taproom. The company now has put out more than 20 varieties of beer (a single batch of wash can be used to make up to eight types of beer and whiskey). Highlights include an extensive line of barrel-aged beers – because who has more access to used whiskey barrels than a distillery?

BEHIND THE BREWS: MICHAEL REPPUCCI A self-proclaimed “Italian kid from Rhode Island,” Sons of Liberty owner Michael Reppucci grew up making wine with his father, cousin and neighbors in Narragansett. A stint in a London business school turned his head from a love of craft beer to spirits (particularly scotch at the time), and a visit to some other distilleries down South left him appalled at the low quality of the mash being used to produce whiskey. “I was always told the better ingredients you start with, the better product you’ll have” – a statement as true for making whiskey and beer as it is for pasta, says Michael. Names like Uprising and Battle Cry hint at a patriotic message behind the company name, but that’s only part of the Sons of Liberty story, Michael says. “I’m a kid who quit school to start a business – what’s more American than that?” says Michael. “The founding fathers took on the British – how dumb was that? All I wanted was to take a shot with my life.”

A Glass Act Beautiful, artful home goods at Clancy Designs Although Clancy Designs’ work can be found in shops and galleries around the world, there is only one place to buy it in RI – straight from the source. At their cozy workshop in Jamestown, David and Jennifer Clancy have set aside room to display and sell their wares. The gorgeous blown-glass designs range from tableware, glassware and stemware to lighting and astounding, one-of-a-kind sculptures. Everything here is handmade by the Clancys: from the hand-sculpted calla

lilies on a clear vase to the colorful circles adorning one of the tableware patterns, everything you see has gone through their hands and kiln. You will find a plethora of items to collect, treat yourself with or give as gifts for weddings, birthdays, holidays and more. Choose a heart-shaped paperweight or a plump little bird, grab a funky martini or wine glass or pick out a glass fish affixed to a metal gear for your wall. If you have a specific vision, the

Clancys will work with you on shape, color and theme to make it a reality. The shop is located next to the Windmill in Jamestown and the sign at the driveway simply says “Glass Blowing.” Stop in and prepare to have your mind blown.

An Oceanside Writer’s Retreat Author Jeanne Blasberg finds inspiration in her Watch Hill home

56

SORhodeIsland.com • November 2017

Watch Hill provided the inspiration for Jeanne Blasberg’s novel, Eden

offered a warm, welcoming feel with cues from its coastal locale. They turned to architect Thomas A. Kligerman of the firm Ike Kligerman Barkley based in New York and San Francisco, not only for their sterling reputation, but because Kligerman might know Watch Hill better than any architect. A Weekapaug native, “Thom had a real sensitivity of the new England

Photography by Grace Lentini

Jeanne Blasberg and her husband John have spent summers in Watch Hill for more than 20 years. The close-knit coastal community, full of family legacy, the spoils of summer and social circles, became the inspiration for Jeanne’s debut novel, Eden, much of which was written in the unique home she and John built in Watch Hill between 2012 and 2014. “The property came on the market – a unique property with water access,” Jeanne explains. Previously, three smaller homes were on the plat on Osprey Point and the property already had CRMC approval, so the couple moved forward on their plan to build one large home there that maximized the views and

shingle style,” Jeanne says. He was also well versed in the challenges that come with building a waterfront home. “We were concerned we’d have a house that looked silly at the end of the day with all of the restrictions,” Jeanne explains. Instead, the home was expertly designed to make good use of the required 15-foot elevation by making the void an outdoor living space framed by architecturally intriguing arches and including a convenient garage. Where the seven-bedroom home vastly differs from many of its Shingle-style brethren is the interior’s palpable contemporary influence. “It’s an open plan inspired by our time living in Switzerland,” explains Jeanne. “[There are] elements of the old and the new: kind of a glass box inside Shingle-style origami.” Jeanne says that while she and John “expressed our desires and what we loved and what we hoped” in terms of the design of the home, the project was ultimately Thom’s vision. “At different points, we modified based on our budget or our preferences.” The couple shared the same approach when it came to the interior aesthetic as well, which Jeanne calls “a play on whites and woods”

throughout. “I wanted it to be simple; to feel sophisticated, but that the kids could put their feet up on the couches,” she explains, even calling some spaces “a little edgy.” The edgy might be the one room in the house which unexpectedly blends in seamlessly with the clean, white palate: the family room/office is a dramatic high-gloss midnight black with deep navy undertones meant to mimic a ship’s hull. It’s no surprise that Jeanne wrote much of Eden here. The home, she says, served as “a place where I can get quiet and do the deep, creative work. [It’s] a haven for serenity and peace, open to the world with all the windows.” The inspiring landscape and seascape made for the creation of the story’s setting in “Long Harbor, Rhode Island,” a fictional Watch Hill. In the kitchen, a long island invites the family to enjoy casual meals, although in the warmer months, you’ll typically find them gathering at day’s end in the screened-in porch, soaking in the sunset during a relaxed, unplugged dinner. “We’re all about collecting at the end of the day,” says Jeanne. Oftentimes, the table will include a dish from the family’s vegetable garden

which Jeanne enjoys tending. As they look to the future, the Blasbergs anticipate spending even more time on Osprey Point, a place Jeanne and John say they created “as a family magnet so the kids can come back, and for us to grow, work and create.”

The Luck of the Find Kathy Wilson of Perennials Consignment on thrifting your way into a stellar wardrobe

When Kathy Wilson ended her previous career, she was looking for something that would give her a flexible schedule and the freedom to pursue the things she loves: namely, consignment shopping. “I realized it was just the thing I was looking for,” she says. Now, Kathy’s Perennials Consignment is so popular that she just moved to an expanded location. “I love being a part of the community in South County,” Kathy says. “I meet and work with so many wonderful people to promote ideas of sustainability and thrift in a world dominated by fast fashion.”

What’s the style of the store? We have casual, formal and active wear in all shapes and sizes. In South County, we find that the majority of our shoppers are looking for casual wear. We are always on the lookout for great leather shoes and handbags. At Perennials we are not snobby about brands, but we do look for nice quality clothing and jewelry made of good fabrics, leather, sterling, wool and cotton. It is not just about the brand for us… quality and cuteness are everything. We hear you offer styling and personal shopping. We can offer personal shopping experiences for our visitors if they need extra help accessorizing or putting whole outfits together. I think some of our customers feel very comfortable shopping with us. We love providing

our customers with honest feedback and assistance finding just the right looks to make them feel great. Tell us the secret to finding really great deals – do things get marked down as time goes on? We try to keep it simple. We always have a sale that never changes. If it is over 30 days old, an item is 20% off. Over 60 days old, it is 50% off. We then have occasional additional sales. The best way to find out what is happening with us is to like us on Facebook for up-to-date news on sales, events and interesting new arrivals. Pro Tip time: How do consignors make the most money selling clothes? Consignors that do best with us supply us with amazing quality and well-cared-for items from within the last couple of years. We do have a small section of vintage items

Kathy Wilson (right), with her team Laura Kelly, Lisa Blaser and Rory Maynard-Dean

that is now gaining more attention from the younger shoppers. Tell us about your new space. Why the move? Perennials had been in the same location for over 25 years. In the last few years we have expanded our customer base so we found the need to expand our physical space to meet the needs of our shoppers. We needed more room to increase our men’s selection, as well as add some room for our vintage items.

What makes Perennials unique? I think we are most known for our variety and prices. We have a very organized selection of clothing and accessories for women and men of all ages and sizes, including jewelry, shoes, formalwear, active wear, suits, scarves, hats and handbags. We also offer private parties where the host and a minimum of 10 of her friends can have a private shopping experience, outside of our regular hours, with discounted rates and snacks.

A family-owned and operated company since 1998

Adding gemstones makes pretty much anything better: hands, clothing, relationships. What I didn’t realize is that this rule also applies to skincare. Shimmer Salon and Day Spa in East Greenwich offers gemstone therapy in their facials, massages and nail services. In the interest of good journalism, I set out to discover whether adding some sparkle to my spa services would add some shine to my person. I will start by saying that a massage is like pizza (and other things) in that there’s really no bad massage – some are just better than others. Given how quickly my mind went from mile-a-minute to totally checked out, it’s safe to say the massage given to me by Elizabeth Soydemir was definitely in the “better” category. She concentrated on my overworked neck and arm muscles – a writer’s job hazard – and cleared away all of the stress I carried in the door with me. It was the perfect way to prime my body and mind for the infusion of positive energy that came my way with the Gemstone Facial that Maria Martinez did next. Using all natural, botanical products from a French line, Maria was gentle to my skin, but also extracted toxins through a series of masques and a high frequency tool, which is that zappy little machine that alleviates hyperpigmentation. Maria did this while I had

gemstones all over me: seven up and down my sternum, for each chakra, and many over my arms and shoulders, including turquoise, a stone especially helpful in physical healing. I don’t know how much added benefit all of the gemstones gave me during the facial, but I do know that my skin was glowing afterwards, and my dark circles, permanent fixtures on my face for my whole life, had vanished. We finished off my night of pampering with a Gemstone Pedicure by Kate Truman in one of Shimmer’s private pedi rooms, where I sat on what I can only describe as a throne while my legs and feet were scrubbed with housemade botanical scrubs, and I had even more relaxation time with pink tourmaline on my feet, which helps boost physical and emotional balance. Through writing this column for some years, I’ve been lucky enough to experience a lot of different spa services. I can say that this one, hands down, was the one I felt most like a princess, both in the spa, and after, when the face I was showing to the world was decidedly more glowing than usual.

Serious Cider Doughnuts Jamestown’s Hard Pressed Cider Company has fall’s signature foods on lock In the summer, Rhode Islanders debate who’s got the best clam cakes. Come fall, though, the conversation shifts to cider doughnuts. And really, there’s no time to waste: these autumn delicacies only stick around for a few blissful months when it’s warm enough to pick apples but cold enough to order hot cider to dunk your doughnuts in. Hurry up and get yourself to Jamestown’s Windmist Farm (WindmistFarm.com) before Thanksgiving – that’s how long The Hard Pressed Cider Company (HardPressedCiderCompany.

com) will be pressing fresh cider and serving up piping hot cider doughnuts, the recipe for which includes their own cider and fresh apple pieces, plus a healthy coat of cinnamon sugar on the outside. Simply put, these are not just any cider doughnuts. This is only the second season for the food truck; after Thanksgiving, they’ll be heading to The Farmer’s Daughter (TheFarmersDaughterRI.com) in South Kingstown for Christmas tree season. But don’t wait – nothing tastes as good when you’re wearing a winter coat.

A Comfort Food Haven

This spring, Safehouse took the place of Chianti’s in East Greenwich. On a recent Saturday night, my cousin, my friend and I took refuge there to try it out. Still owned by the Martucci Group (which also owns the attached Trap Pub & Grill), the restaurant is designed to evoke the upscale ski lodge feeling of Jackson Hole. The night we were there, the restaurant and bar area seemed to be wall-to-wall people (we were glad to have made an online reservation). Safehouse’s cocktail list is creative without being too weird. I tried the Main Street Margarita ($12) with Sauza Blue Tequila, triple sec, blueberries, fresh sage and lime juice, finished with a salted rim – excellent, although the blueberry and sage flavors didn’t come through as much as I had hoped. My cousin got the North Kingstini ($10) with banana rum and orange juice and finished with sprinkles of cinnamon and nutmeg. The restaurant offers a variety of beers, including several local options, and a small but interesting wine list. With our cocktails, we enjoyed the house-made focaccia bread, baked fresh every day and accompanied by garlicky

sundried tomato butter. From the list of delicious-sounding appetizers, we chose the Stuffed Mozzarella ($10) – fresh mozzarella rolled with thin slices of prosciutto and topped with diced tomatoes, basil oil, pesto and a sweet balsamic reduction – and the Potato and Red Quinoa Tater Tots ($9). Both were outstanding – and you know it’s a good restaurant if they can make quinoa taste good. The mashed potato filling in the tots was rich and buttery, and they were served with a tasty cheddar cheese dipping sauce. The dinner menu is varied and includes many of the most popular entrées from Chianti’s. My friend ordered the Seasonal Pasta Envelopes ($28) – on this night, stuffed and topped with tender lobster meat, with a tasty pink vodka sauce. My cousin ordered the Butternut Squash Pappardelle ($11), thinking it was pasta – it was actually a salad, with butternut squash shaved into pasta-like ribbons and mixed with arugula, gorgonzola cheese, candied pecans, focaccia croutons, jasmine rice and apple vinaigrette. The salad was large enough to serve

as an entrée or to be shared as an appetizer, and she loved it. I decided on the Center Cut Rib Eye ($29) because it came with potato bacon hash. The steak had been rubbed with espresso before being cooked, which gave it a nice crust, and it was nicely marbled. The dish was topped with a roasted shallot compound butter, which was just as good as it sounds, with some crispy fried shallots sprinkled on top for good measure. The potato bacon hash was decadent in all of the right ways. To sop up some of the fat from the steak, butter and hash, this dish came with a small arugula salad dressed with a simple vinaigrette. We decided to forget our diets and ordered the Fried Dough Buttons ($7) for dessert. The fried dough balls were stuffed with Nutella and mascarpone and sprinkled with cinnamon sugar – a sweet way to end our night.

CUISINE: Italian-influenced comfort food PRICES: Appetizers: $9–$13 Entrées: $10–$29 Desserts $7–$10 ATMOSPHERE: Casual but upscale

Second Time’s the Charm A relaunched Back 40, Olivia Culpo’s new North Kingstown restaurant, is an instant hit Rhode Island native and former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo has said that ever since childhood she’s had aspirations to open a restaurant. Late this summer, those dreams became a reality as the beauty queen – along with her father Peter Culpo, cousin Joshua Culpo and local business partner Justin Dalton-Ameen – opened Back 40 (Back40RI.com) in North Kingstown. The Culpos, who own several other restaurants in the greater Boston area, aren’t strangers to the business. But that didn’t mean Back 40 opened without a hitch. The highly anticipated restaurant drew huge crowds on its opening weekend in late August, with hundreds of hungry guests turning up to share in the celebrity buzz. As a result, the restaurant briefly closed in order to regroup so that they could better meet the overwhelming demand. Sarah Wade, previously the head chef at Lulu’s Allston, was brought in as the new executive chef, and the menu was adapted based on early feedback from customers. Since reopening in September, they’ve been serving up New American comfort food inspired by the seasonal flavors of Rhode Island. Like a true homegrown girl, Culpo has said her favorite is the lobster roll.

Farm-to-Table Turkey Is the Secret to a Winning Thanksgiving Menu Whether you like baked or deep-fried, stuffed or smoked, white meat or dark, a delicious, juicy, sleep-inducing turkey is the hallmark of any good Thanksgiving dinner. This year, opt for a fresh, ethically raised bird from South County. Pat’s Pastured (PatsPastured.com) in East Greenwich offers free-range Standard White Turkeys, a type of turkey known for having a generous amount of juicy white breast meat. To complement your beautiful Thanksgiving centerpiece, Pat’s also offers their homemade

turkey gravy and chicken bone broth. Turkeys are sold frozen and can be picked up in East Greenwich or Pawtucket. Exeter’s Wild Harmony Farm (WildHarmonyFarm.com) is one-stop shopping for your Thanksgiving table. In addition to fresh fruits and vegetables, they raise cattle, dairy sheep, chickens, pigs and – during the fall season – turkeys. A small, family-owned farm in Wakefield, Thorns and Acorns Farm (FarmFresh.org)

specializes in free-range poultry – specifically, chicken and Heritage breed turkeys. This breed has more in common with its wild ancestors than it does with turkeys raised for industrial agriculture, and is known to be especially juicy and flavorful. Founded in 1657, Browning Homestead Farm (BrowningHomesteadFarm.com) in Wakefield has been family owned and operated for eleven generations. They’ve transitioned from milk and dairy production into raising livestock, including wonderful Thanksgiving turkeys.

Simply Sensational Food Sonoma Bistro’s Christian Lanoie cooks up delicious meals without the fuss

When owners Christian and Kerrie Lanoie bought Sonoma Bistro and Wine Bar in 2012, they closed on the sale over breakfast and were open for lunch. Given this continuity, regulars might take walking through the doors for granted, but from my conversation with Christian, it’s clear that he certainly doesn’t. Steady improvements to the menu and an unwillingness to cut corners in prep have built an even larger crowd, making the restaurant a bit of a sleeper hit in North Kingstown. My conversation with Christian revealed a self-described humble cook focused at all times on his patrons. We talked tweezers, title inflation and taps.

Photosgraphy by Ron Cowie

For a place called Sonoma Bistro and Wine Bar, there’s a lot of beer! We were actually just joking recently that we should have called it Sonoma Bistro and Beer Bar. We have 36 beers on draught, and 25 of them come from Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. So when we say local, we mean it. We’re definitely a craft beer bar. Still, we have 30 wines by the glass. Drinks are a big part of the business, but one of the things that we love about this restaurant is that our bar guests are here to eat. At the bar or in the dining room, the liquor and food mix is the same. What changes have you made since buying the restaurant? The first thing we did was really improve the quality of the food both from the execution standpoint, in terms of what was being done in the line, and also by improving ingredients. We immediately got rid of stuff like butter blend and used real butter. By improving everything coming in the door, we improved what was getting to the table. The next phase was to take the menu and bring it into a more consistent theme, listening to the guests and finding out what they really wanted. Tell us about your seasonal menus. We’re a neighborhood joint, so a lot of the

menu carries over because there are a bunch of items that our regulars want to see, but the presentation changes. For instance, last winter we had a pan-seared salmon with butternut squash risotto, but for the summer the salmon is served with shaved brussels sprouts hard-sautéed with lardons, served with mashed potato and topped with fresh herb butter. What does your menu say about you as a chef, and your background? First of all, I don’t consider myself a chef; I’m a humble cook. Years ago, executive chef was an administrative position. Nowadays, if you flip an egg, you’re an executive chef, if you’re the head egg flipper. My Canadian and Syrian heritage has never played a huge role, so once in a great while a dish will pop up, but I’m not out there to make nouveau-Syrian cuisine. I don’t think my menu reflects me so much as what our guests want. A lot of the stuff on the

While 36 beers on tap are a nice bonus, the real star at Sonoma Bistro is owner Christian Lanoie’s simple-is-better menu

menu is us as owners reacting to our market and the people we know. My influence on the food has more to do with what goes on behind the scenes. I’m not about having tweezers in my kitchen to place a single micro-green, but I am about making sauces and stocks from scratch, I’m grinding whole spices when I want to season things; I use all of my ingredients, rather than throwing away scraps. These are the foundations of flavor for me. I never thought of myself as being very creative, but I can make food taste good and build great flavors. I employ my French techniques, but I keep it Italian simple.

Inside the chic boutique Break Hotel, Chair 5 serves incredible seafood in an art-filled space that feels at once upscale and totally relaxed. Chef Tyler Demora has created an entirely new, expanded menu, and makes everything in-house – even the pasta and bread. He brings an elevated farm-to-table sensibility to his cuisine: he

personally selects the seafood off the boats in Galilee and from local oyster farms, and sources his produce as close to the restaurant as possible. The menu ranges from crudo, raw bar and charcuterie to inventive fine dining steaks and seafood, and casual beach classics. Inside this gorgeous restaurant, it’s always summer.

Approved Get a Piece of the Pumpkin Pie

A Teatim e Treat Sweet Cakes Bakery (SweetCakesBakeryRI.com) in Peace Dale offers up a custardy puree that goes down like pudding and is just as comforting. With a shortbread crust to round it off, this pie is perfect to accompany that after-dinner tea or coffee when you’re caffeinating for the drive home.

There’s no better way to wrap up Thanksgiving dinner than pumpkin pie. If you don’t know your way around a pie pan, these South County bakeries will have you covered come Turkey Day. Just make sure you get an extra one for you and all those leftovers.

Keep C a lm a nd Pumpkin On

Pelloni Farm (Facebook: Pelloni Farm) in Hopkinton knows that you might need something a little milder after a particularly tart cranberry sauce or gravy that was more of a bechamel than a vinaigrette. Their pie’s subtle flavor will help you cool down after that flavor explosion. We all know pumpkin works just fine on its own.

The C la ss ic Carpenter’s Farm Stand (CarpentersFarmStand.com) in Wakefield keeps the puree smooth and pumpkiny, offering up a pie that’ll perk you up without weighing you down (let’s avoid last year’s post-turkey collapse). Perfect for the pie traditionalists among us.
