Tracy Prince crafts meaningful jewelry from found beach materials, like paw print pendants honoring pets
SEASHORE FINDS Coventry’s Tracy Prince cleans the beach while making beautiful jewelry out of found materials Tracy Prince of Coventry likes to go hunting for sea glass for her jewelry business, Sea Find Designs. She turns what she finds into beautiful, hand carved necklaces, bracelets, pendants, earrings, and keychains – even belly button rings – sometimes set with rhinestones or gems. In her Etsy shop and on her Facebook page, they sell out quickly. Each item is uniquely individual since every piece of glass, stone, or shell is one-of-a-kind. Prince and her family regularly go out looking on the beach together, but they’re not just hunting for hidden treasures in the sand – they’re cleaning the beach. Though a decline in illegal dumping has made sea glass harder to find recently, Prince still makes it her mission to tidy the shoreline as she searches for interesting stones or shells. Prince’s love of sea glass began when she was a child, visiting her grandmother in Puerto Rico. When her husband found a shard of green glass on a beach in Mexico 23 years ago, her obsession
was reignited, and she began her collection anew. She was trying to find a creative way to use the sea glass she’d amassed, and when she saw her sister wearing a jade pendant wrapped in wire, she thought, “I can do that!” After selling some of her jewelry at a friend’s party, her business was born. Prince’s most recent favorite design has been a paw print, which she carves by hand. She’ll get requests for commissions with personal notes attached, telling her why the piece is important to that customer. “I had no idea how meaningful they’d become to me until people started sending me pictures of their fur babies, telling me how much they missed the ones they’ve lost, or how much they love the ones that are still part of their family,” Prince explains. “Each one is made custom to honor their pet, so they’re all named after their pup or kitty. It’s so fulfilling knowing exactly why they’re purchasing my pieces.” Facebook: Sea Find Designs –Alyssa Anderson

A New Kind of Club The Boys & Girls Club’s new maker spaces help kids pursue their artistic passions
When the Boys & Girls Club (BGC) of Warwick expanded into the Cooper Building, Executive Director Lara D’Antuono knew it was going to have a special purpose. Just a short walk from Warwick Veterans Middle School, D’Antuono wanted to serve sixth, seventh, and eighth graders, a period in

life she believes we can all acknowledge is awkward and difficult – particularly for those kids who aren’t part of a sports team or academic group. “If [those kids] can find their passion, they’re going to glow,” says D’Antuono. This is the mission behind the converted space
that is now The Club at Cooper. Three years ago, the City offered to pay occupational expenses in exchange for the BGC to use the building for recreational purposes. One year ago, The Club officially opened, and just a few months ago, additional rooms were transformed with funding from the

The BGC of Warwick unveils their new art spaces, like this sound recording studio
Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. “We teach [the kids] that their passions and interests can be a future for them,” D’Antuono explains. This means that if a child likes anything from makeup to selfies, BGC shows them how to turn that into something bigger: They can become a special effects makeup artist or professional photographer. With regards to the space, D’Antuono says, “We want it to move and flow and grow and have a heartbeat.” And it certainly does. In addition to their wellness center, virtual gym, and “messy” art room, The Club now has spaces for creativity with a technical twist. A “tech” room contains 3D printers, laptops, cameras, and more for video creation; a new recording studio lets kids experiment with sound boards and make their own beats; and a video editing room boasts state-of-the-art software. BGC brings in professionals to demonstrate how to use the equipment and instruments, a luxury most families can’t afford. The mix of old and new, from VR games to sewing classes, lets kids find not only what interests them, but what motivates them. “It does change lives,” D’Antuono says, recalling many stories of shy and marginalized kids flourishing with their newfound skills, passions, and community. While BGC has other locations in the city, D’Antuono and her colleague, Development Director Eleanor Acton, believe The Club at Cooper stands out. From paid internships in video and sound for young kids – described as a “superprogram” by Acton – to the ever-evolving approach to the arts – like a stand-up comedy program formed by a particularly witty middle schooler – The Club is setting a new standard for community organizations. “I’ve been working [with BGC] for 22 years,” D’Antuono says, “and this place is different.” Warwick, WBGClubs.org –Megan Schmit

Run For It Nonprofit program Girls On The Run Rhode Island empowers young girls through running
GOTRRI builds self-confidence and empowerment in young girls through running
One afterschool program that is changing the lives of youth across the state is Girls On The Run Rhode Island (GOTRRI), a non-profit dedicated to the empowerment of young girls through running. Unlike a sports-based methodology, GOTRRI is a program focused more on the journey than the destination. “It’s more about the goal you set and how you feel about the progress that you’re making,” Executive Director Jacklyn O’Hara says. Serving girls in third through fifth grades, the Girls On The Run afterschool program runs during the fall and spring seasons, offering a series of connected sessions based on teamwork, self-expression, and the power each student holds to make an impact on their community. “Each session builds off of the last,” O’Hara says. “They are at the core of what girls
are experiencing at this age: peer pressure, self-confidence building, and setting goals.” Heart and Sole is the non-profit’s middle school program where the connection between physical and mental wellness is further explored. “The life-skills portion crosses over to the running component when the girls who once said ‘I can’t’ are running miles by the end of a season.” “We are first and foremost a young girl’s empowerment program,” O’Hara explains, “running is used as one of the mediums to build confidence.” In addition to physical activity, GOTRRI’s program incorporates lessons focused on self-worth and relationship building to help developing youth become the leaders of their own lives. With nearly a third of their students funded
through scholarships, donations, and volunteers, GOTRRI prides itself on being an all-inclusive program throughout the state of Rhode Island and. Their SoleMates is one of the biggest reasons why GOTRRI is able to fund such a generous percentage of their participants. The program gives the opportunity for a team of individuals –whether you can run a marathon or walk a mile – to dedicate their training to funding a student that may not have the opportunity to participate in the program. “While the program is for young girls, the people that are making it happen are the entire community,” O’Hara says. “We’re running with a purpose.” GOTRRI.org –Ava Callery

Herbal Essences Earth comes first at Lily’s Garden Herbals
Photo courtesy of Lily’s Garden Herbals
Lily’s Garden Herbals may have changed location, but Kim Falcone makes sure her dedication to all-natural products doesn’t
In 1999, Kim Falcone continued her family’s line of “herb wives” and created Lily’s Garden Herbals – named, at the insistence of her sixyear-old daughter, after their late kitten, Lily. “I had become enthralled with the therapeutic properties of medicinal herbs like echinacea and peppermint, and essential oils like lavender and rosemary, and realized I could help my kids’ health issues and clean and freshen my home with them,” Falcone remembers. So, she finished her first herbal apprenticeship and traded brand-name chlorine bleach products for all-natural ingredients. “I trust and believe in deriving health from nature because that’s where we all come from,” Falcone explains. “All life comes from the earth itself. So, when we used plant-based materials for healing and cleaning, our bodies can relate. That is, our bodies innately know how to process the constituents in the
plant. This results in a natural healing reaction, whether it’s to fend off germs, build the body’s immune response, or to nourish, through foods derived directly from the earth.” As a community herbalist and business owner, Falcone runs a one-woman show, gathering herbs and flowers and crafting each product herself. She is also available as a consultant for natural health. “I feel empowered that I can make a difference in my life and the lives of others, whether it be via herbal medicine, switching over to green cleaning products for the home after years of using chemicals, or offering support to the community,” she says. Lily’s offers everything you could possibly need for health and home: household supplies like glass cleaner and furniture polish, remedies like poison ivy tincture and chest and sinus rub, and scent spritzers.
Every product, per the store’s promise, is all-natural, non-toxic, chemical-free, biodegradable, and not to mention aromatic. The most popular product is Lily’s Garden Herbals All Purpose Clean, a fresh-scented solution with essential oils like tea tree and eucalyptus. Since its conception, Lily’s operated out of a quaint but charming “Cottage in the Garden” in Wakefield, but it is now on the move with its owner, whose family has transitioned to a new home near Moonstone Beach. While Falcone was sad to leave the site, she knows “that special energy” will follow Lily’s no matter in which coastal town it lands. Says Falcone, “I’m looking forward to getting my supplies and work area all set up once again, so I can pick up where I left off serving the community the best way I know.” LilysGardenHerbals.com –Megan Schmit

If you ask Janelle “Elle” Feigley, owner of Gossip Boutique in Wickford, how long her paintings take to create, her answer would be “a lifetime.” Her art reflects her soul and what circumstance it may be going through or inspired by, which is exactly why she created “The People Project”
last September. After losing two close friends in the previous year, Feigley sought out art, one of her greatest passions, as a means of coping. Since its inception, “The People Project” has evolved into a project that’s about women celebrating and uplifting one

IN BUSINESS 1968-2018
another, instead of being specifically tailored to breast cancer, its initial subject. Every day through the month of October, Feigley painted a nude woman in a one-on-one session. Together, their simple studio visit turned into a therapy session for herself and her model, where intimate details were shared about each other’s lives. While some models are currently battling breast cancer, others are grieving the loss of a family member to it. Others are much different, coming to Feigley to share their bodies for a brief art session while, too, sharing stories of domestic abuse or alcohol and drug use. Every piece comes to life through acrylic paint. They begin on a canvas that was used to mix the previous model’s color palette, which, says Feigley, “connects all of the women from the start of the project until completion.” She adds that “each piece of art is somewhat of a time capsule [of] the issues that women are dealing with on a daily basis.” When her month of painting is behind her, Feigley will host a celebration at her store in Wickford, which will be followed by a gallery show at Sundance in East Greenwich on November 16 from 6-9pm. There, all of the paintings will be on display and for sale, accompanied by the model. All proceeds go to whichever charity is chosen by the public on social media, something she says shouldn’t take away from the beauty of the project and the connection it brings women. To Feigley, “The People Project” is Guggenheim-bound. “It’s inevitable,” she says. “A project this pure in intention and purpose that has come about organically is going to surpass Rhode Island in due time.” She adds, “‘The People Project’ [is] a beautiful story that [demonstrates] a true celebration of women and people in our community.” Follow Feigley’s creative endeavors on Instagram: @elleartdesign and @gossip_boutique. Underdogs Exeter’s Yvonne Curran dedicates herself to creating a happy home for disabled, “unadoptable” dogs
In 2006, Yvonne Curran broke her foot in three places. She was housebound, needing assistance getting to doctor visits, making grocery runs, and other seemingly easy tasks. Having had a sense of independence her whole life, Curran felt helpless. Then, after she’d recovered, she came across a video of a dog named Scooter while searching adoption sites for a companion to her dog, Fifi. Scooter was born paralyzed and had a heart issue. He needed help expressing his bladder, and he wore diapers in case of accidents. “Because I broke my foot and I’d felt so vulnerable, it just hit a chord with me. If I thought I felt bad and isolated… I just felt his pain.” Curran hadn’t seen or thought about a disabled dog before. Who’s giving them the love and care that any other “healthy” dog deserves? After being Scooter’s only applicant,

she realized that it would be up to her. “He set me on another path,” she says. Working full-time, Curran managed to take care of Scooter’s every ailment and began to see his compassionate spirit and personality surface. So much so that when Curran took in a terrified puppy mill survivor named Lilly, he brought out the confidence the other pooch needed to come out of her shell, and the two formed an incredible bond. When, after months, Lilly appeared from her hiding spot under the blankets to steal some treats from Curran’s purse, she celebrated: “When they do little things like that, it really makes it all worthwhile.” In Scooter’s honor, Curran tries to take in the most severely disabled dogs. Since his passing in 2013, she’s adopted four handicapped dogs who range in disabilities from paralysis to severe PTSD. There’s Lilly, who’s blind and suffers
from PTSD; Teddi, who’s paralyzed from the waist down; Trixie, a Chiweenie mix missing front legs; and one pup in particular, Einstein, was forced to stand on chicken wire in a puppy mill and had broken legs. He needed extensive medical care from a lifetime of abuses. Curran dealt with the issues one by one and saw how determined he was to live now that he was under loving care. “He wasn’t supposed to last longer than four months – I’ve had him over five years now.” For Curran, watching the dogs arrive physically and emotionally broken to finally seeing them flourish with genuine happiness is payoff for her hard work and proof that love heals. “They do deserve a life. No matter how old they are,” says Curran. “There’s a place in my heart for the downtrodden and abused, handicapped animals.” –Emily Buonaiuto

Courthouse Center for the Arts is a thriving hub for the arts in Kingston By Karen Greco
Photography by Wolf Matthewson
Preceded by a shock of curly blond hair, Mariann Almonte steps out of her office with a big hello and an even bigger cup of coffee. The Executive Director of Courthouse Center for the Arts in Kingston, she’s running on caffeine and pure adrenalin. Just the night before, legendary country artist Hal Ketchum performed a rare acoustic show to a sold out crowd. Another musical act would swing in the following day. In less than a week’s time, a new gallery exhibit would be installed. Summer camps ended and classes were gearing back up. Even with only two full-time employees, the place hums with activity. Almonte was introduced to the Courthouse Center for the Arts by a friend. She was invited immediately to join their board of directors. In 2016, after a year on the board, she took the reigns of Executive Director, refocusing the Courthouse’s direction into creating inclusive arts learning opportunities for kids, giving the South County’s children access to free theater and music classes. A parent described the experience of her shy and reserved middle school aged son as “transformative,” saying that his increased confidence carried over in all

areas of his life. “He’s more engaged and outspoken,” she says. “The program has done so much for him.” Almonte cites the 2007 study released by the Dana Foundation concluding that kids who participated in the arts were cognitively and developmentally ahead of their peers. “The arts programs are the first to get cut in schools,” Almonte says. “Or there’s one theater class for a school of 1,300. That serves maybe 20 or 30 kids. What about the ones who are left out? We can fill that void.” Almonte’s early childhood was spent in Cranston, part of a tight-knit family. They owned an eight-family home that housed grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins. It was a family member’s struggle with mental illness that prompted an interest in community service. She began volunteering at the age of 13 with an unwavering commitment towards mental health and child advocacy. As an arts hub, the Courthouse is building its name on the music touring circuit. A repurposed courthouse built in 1893, the performance space is located in the largest courtroom on the second floor. Built before the advent of artificial
amplification, the intimate space has spectacular acoustics, making the venue an appealing stop for national acts travelling between large cities like Boston and New York. Before each show, Almonte gets on stage and pitches for the non-profit organization. She cajoles the audience to contribute, “even if it’s just swishing a brush in the toilet bowl after they use the bathroom.” Almonte’s kinetic energy — and her spirit — is infectious. “A lot of the musical acts that come through here are so touched by what we are doing that they lower their performance fees. They love our mission and they want to support it. How cool is that?” Upkeep on the 120-year-old building is a challenge. A grant from the Champlin Foundation allowed the Center to repair the old
slate roof and replace some leaky windows. But there’s still plenty of work to be done. “Our neighbors are amazing. The guy across the street is a landscaper and he just pops over and cuts our grass. Another neighbor is a plumber. He’s here weekly unclogging something from the ancient pipes. Our board president pulls beer behind the bar for patrons during shows.” She laughs. “There is no way we could do this without the community behind us.” Three rooms on the first floor house gallery exhibits, which rotate monthly. They hold openings every first Thursday of the month featuring work by local artists, and offering finger food with a cash bar. Groups can rent out the arts center for parties and events — Almonte raves about a Halloween wedding they put on last year — which helps
fund their free classes. She also offers free meeting space for non-profits like the National Alliance on Mental Illness and various veterans organizations. Almonte’s vision includes renovating a home on the property to house the visiting artists, which will cut down on hotel costs. She is licensing a percussion program developed by a professor at Brown University to add to the kids’ classes. A woodworking program to teach the art of restoration and business management is in its gestation stage. “No child should be denied access to the arts,” Almonte says. “We want to take away that financial barrier. We want to give them a safe space to be themselves, be social, and have fun. Our doors are always open. All are welcome.” CourthouseArts.org

The Sweet Science
Researchers at URI are tapping into the potential of RI’s state tree – the maple

H
ard of wood, tall of stature, and a leaf-peeper’s delight come fall, the maple is the national symbol of Canada, the state tree of Rhode Island, and the only tree adopted as a mascot by a professional hockey team. As hinted in its scientific name, A. saccharum, the sugar maple also is the prime source for the maple syrup we pour onto our morning pancakes and — I can’t be the only one — bacon, too. And while eating strips of fried fatty pork drenched in syrup probably won’t help maintain your youthful appearance, new research from the University of Rhode Island suggests that an extract derived from the mighty maple could. Like the sugar maple, red maples (Acer rubrum, if you want to be formal) can be tapped for maple sugar, but the study unveiled in August at a meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) by researcher Navindra P. Seeram, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences at URI’s College of Pharmacy, was more interested in its ruddy leaves. Seeram, research associate Hang Ma, Ph.D., and colleagues at URI found that compounds in maple leaves called GCGs might also prevent wrinkles by inhibiting the enzyme elastase, which breaks down the elastin that keeps skin smooth and supple. The researchers gave the compound the name “Maplifa” in a nod to its sylvan origins and have licensed it to a botanical extracts supplier, Verdure Sciences, to develop possible cosmetic uses. “You could imagine that these extracts might tighten up human skin like a plant-based Botox, though they would be a topical application, not an injected toxin,” said Seeram at the ACS conference. “Many botanical ingredients traditionally come from China, India, and the Mediterranean, but the sugar maple and the red maple only grow in eastern North America.” “I’d be particularly excited to have that kind of material as we consider developing products going forward,” says Brenda Brock,

founder of Portsmouth-based natural skincare products company Farmaesthetics. “It’s so exciting to have research facilities like those at URI looking into how to harness these crops. I’ll be knocking on their door soon to talk more about this.” Seeram has stumped for research into the uses of the maple tree ever since arriving at URI from the West Coast 11 years ago as an expert in the plant-based foods traditionally used as medicine. “It didn’t take me long to realize that maple syrup is only produced in the eastern part of North America,” thanks to the annual freeze-thaw cycle and the local abundance of sugar and red maple trees from Quebec through New England and south to New York, he said. “I’m originally from South America and we didn’t have pancakes and maple syrup, so this was a learning experience. We look at plants from all over the world, but these were exotic to me.” One of the first things Seeram learned is that there’s a lot more to maple sugar — derived from sap tapped from trees, and later condensed into syrup — than sweet sucrose, including vitamins and minerals pulled from the soil, plant antioxidants, hormones, and amino acids. Publishing more than 50 scientific papers has made the URI College of Pharmacy the leading center for research on the composition and uses of maple products. “We know more about maple chemistry than any other group in the world,” Seeram asserts with confidence. Maple syrup, of course, is the most well-known and commonly maple product; it’s also the largest commercial crop derived from the sap of trees. Tim Perkins, director of the Proctor Maple Research Center at the University of Vermont, said that 150 million pounds of maple syrup are produced in North America each year. Maple syrup is more expensive ounce-for-ounce than olive oil or crude oil — you need to boil down 40 gallons of maple sap to get a single gallon of maple syrup — despite the fact that technology has

helped double sap extraction over the past two decades, according to Perkins. “Thirty or 40 years ago you needed an army of people to make maple syrup,” he said. “It’s somewhat less labor and energy intensive now.” Still, sugaring is not something you’d want to do as a hobby: Perkins estimates that in addition to hours of labor it would likely cost $100 in energy alone to make a gallon of homemade syrup. But you can’t think about money alone when choosing from real maple syrup and so-called “pancake syrup” like Mrs. Butterworth or Aunt Jemima, both of which contain high fructose corn syrup and not a drop of maple syrup. “There’s a demand for a product that is an alternative to corn syrup and, if you’re going to use sugar, has better health benefits,” said Perkins. “We don’t want to encourage overconsumption of sugar, but rather to educate consumers that if they’re concerned about getting vitamins and minerals and antioxidants, this is a natural sugar,” Seeram added. In addition to syrup and maple leaves — which Native Americans used medicinally — URI researchers are also looking at maple bark as a possible source of medicine. That’s not as far-fetched as it might seem: the cancer-fighting drug Taxol is derived from the bark of the Pacific yew tree. Seeram said that one animal study hinted that a maple bark extract could lower blood glucose levels after a high-carbohydrate meal, which could help people with diabetes. URI researchers have isolated more than 67 chemicals found in maple sugar and

Pasteurized maple water, which flows from maple trees in the early fall, also is sold by companies like DRINKmaple as an alternative to coconut water with similar health claims. And Seeram points out that the bold, rich flavor of maple syrup remains unknown in places like India, a country with a notorious sweet tooth and a $1.5 billion candy market. Seeram’s enthusiasm for the maple is dimmed somewhat by climate change, which could cause Rhode Island’s population of maples to eventually recede. “It’s disturbing to think that a few generations down the road there might not be any maples or maple syrup,” he said. Perkins acknowledges that climate change could shift the maple population north, but said such a change would likely take “thousands of years.” On the other hand, he said, warmer winters could make maple sugaring less efficient and profitable. For now, fortunately, Rhode Island’s state tree still grows strong and proud, delivering a sweet bounty each spring and yielding new discoveries to researchers. Rhode Island currently has but a handful of commercial maple syrup producers — Exeter’s Spring Hill Sugar House is probably the best known — but Seeram sees a huge potential market for maple-derived products in the state. “Maple trees could be a niche North American crop,” Seeram said. “It’s an untapped resource for Rhode Island.”

Bright Idea Designer Nicole Ketchum lights her own way with clever business Chandelier By NK things. Customers use them for weddings, parties, holidays, events, retail spaces, outdoor venues, kid’s nurseries and bedrooms, play spaces, and as home decor accents. We will be debuting our Heart Chandelier in 2019 and anticipate that it will be perfect for teen and tween decor. We have even donated chandeliers to places where kids require mental health observations, and children’s library sections. What makes our acrylic chandeliers unique and one-of-a-kind is the design. We pair modern, chic designs with bright colors and crystals. Acrylic is such a fun medium to work with – it can work inside or outside, it’s luminescent and bold, and with freedom from lights, our chandeliers can be hung anywhere you can position a hook or wire.
Nicole Ketchum proudly displays a piece from her range of whimsical wireless fixtures
Where is the most unexpected but fabulous place for a chandelier? Really anywhere. Outside for a wedding, hung from trees or a trellis. Inside over a bathtub or a crib. In a corner, a reading nook, or playroom. The most playful and unexpected place we have had our chandeliers in has been play tents and teepees for playrooms. So much fun and glamour for little ones!
Photography by Stacey Doyle
One Halloween, the notion of having a chandelier that required no illumination sparked an idea in the mind of Nicole Ketchum. Today, from her home in North Kingstown, she runs Chandelier By NK, a growing decor brand that makes acrylic chandeliers and is used by major companies and celebrities alike. How did your business go from a kitchen table idea to working with major brands? Since our idea is unique and fun, there is and was nothing like it on the market. That positioned us in a great way! We were being featured in major magazines and the Associated Press even ran an article on us. That shifted our business and it attracted major brands. In the beginning we were working with celebrities, Mattel, and Nordstrom. At the same time, we were slowly building brand awareness through social media and using photography
as that vehicle to showcase the chandeliers. Through all that hard work, collaborations and press, we were able to work with Disney this past March to outfit one of their stores in Disney Springs. Our chandeliers have been in celebrity houses, resorts in Thailand and Italy, and now Disney. It is very exciting when your idea takes a life of its own and spreads in interesting and amazing ways. Is your own personal style chic and fun like your chandeliers? My own style is bright, modern, and simple. My favorite accessory is an acrylic rainbow necklace a friend makes and sells. My house, too, is filled with modern decor, color, and fun. In what ways can the chandeliers be used? Our two current product lines, The Fancy and The Octopus, have been used for so many
What are you working on now? I have started scaling our company in new and exciting ways: growing our product lines, repackaging our chandeliers for retail spaces, and positioning the company for growth. I am about to get in our second inventory run with China and am thrilled. We have a new finish coming in and it will be exciting to watch it sell. This gold chandelier is one-of-a-kind and there is nothing like it. Being an entrepreneur is one of the hardest things I have ever done, and there were many times I wanted to give up. The deep belief and faith in knowing your work and idea is valuable has helped me ride the highs and lows. I know this next phase of development will be the catalyst Chandelier By NK needs to grow.

Fresh Outlook A North Kingstown couple infuses their nest with splashes of bright color
In the small village of Saunderstown, you’ll find Barbara and Tim McCormick, empty nesters who live in The Glen neighborhood near the University of Rhode Island. Surrounded by century-old oak trees on 1.5 acres, the couple refers to the property as Ring of Oaks. The McCormicks have lived in the house, built in 1999, for four years. “It’s a great place to walk our dog, steward our Little Free Library, and make some trails in the backyard,” says Barb. “We enjoy this peaceful

setting of South County conveniently close to the campus to take advantage of the activities offered there.” Prior to moving in, the McCormicks wanted to make some structural changes to the ranch style home and searched for a reputable construction company. Their realtor recommended Tegan and Company, who impressed the couple by creating a spacious floor plan by opening up the dining room and kitchen to the living room. “They also expertly renovated our

plain-Jane living room mantle and made it into a fabulous two-story focal point of the home,” says Barb, who adds that Tegan and Company also completely gutted their “scary, dated master bathroom and turned it into a great master ensuite.” Barb likes things that are beautiful and fun to look at. “I love graphic items, old things with wording, new things with witty sayings… graphic anything,” she says. “I’ve collected a number of antique enamel numbers
from around the world, anything in a foreign language, you name it.” She defines her decorating style as “bright and happy,” noting a love of stripes, florals, and graphic patterns, which she likes to mingle with whimsical, quirky accessories, homemade items, and natural objects. Against a backdrop of crisp white, Barb skillfully combines these elements, resulting in rooms that are interesting, elegant, and cheerful. Collecting original art is key to Barb’s personal decor style. “There’s nothing like
the excitement of buying art from an artist you have admired for a while and have a piece hanging on your wall at home,” she says, adding, “You can always start small with a purchase of a small canvas or even a sketch.” Barb cites Shady Lea Mill in nearby Kingston as a reliable source for reasonably priced artwork; the couple also enjoys visits to local galleries like the Wickford Art Association and South County Art Association for inspiration.

When it comes to shopping, Barb recommends local places like Marine Consignment in North Kingstown, Eclectic Bungalow and RE in Wickford, and Jules Antiques in Richmond. For fresh flowers, it’s The Farmer’s Daughter in South Kingstown, and the Dahlia Shed in Portsmouth. Living in the Ocean State, Barb notes having a fair amount of nautical and coastal items on display, including natural objects she’s found on the beach. Things like sun-dried horseshoe crab carcasses, sea glass, and periwinkle and other shells are decorative accents that offer a sense of place. Ever-creative, Barb likes to make things and uses a small corner of the house as her studio. Using shoreline finds she constructs things like sail boats from pieces of driftwood. “I have a habit

of picking up plastic garbage from the shore and then clean and sort to make mosaics on acrylic with them,” she says. Recently, Barb has starting to paint and uses local scenery as her subjects along with rendering more abstract pieces. A visit to her Instagram page (@ Barb1962) offers peeks of graphic acrylic work on wood panels, sketches of cairns along Newport’s Cliff Walk, even drawings on the sand. Says Barb, “Art from anywhere in the world is a great way to make a house a home.”

Have a Ball Realigning expectations and muscles at Laughing Elephant Yoga’s Roll and Recover class I’m no stranger to a yoga studio. An avid Bikram yoga fan in high school, and having dabbled in Kundalini and Ashtanga Vinyasa in college, I know my way around a mat. So, when I got the chance to visit Laughing Elephant Yoga in East Greenwich, I was psyched to sign up for a class and get back into a practice I hadn’t done for months. The Laughing Elephant offers traditional yoga classes – Hatha, Vinyasa, Forrest – alongside one-of-a-kind additions like Funky Flow (done to music) and Tune Up
(to fine-tune your poses). I decided to pick a class I’d never heard of or done before: Roll and Recover. After an extended hiatus from stretching of any kind, I figured this would be the perfect chance to release the muscle tension I’d accumulated, especially after a day at the desk. Roll and Recover promises restoration, alignment, and self-massage to relieve muscle aches and pains. At Laughing Elephant, it was a small, intimate class of ten, including our instructor, Jessie Dwiggins. She started with a quick overview of our

“tools”: a series of rubber balls of varying sizes, a strap, and two blocks. The balls were what intrigued me. There was the Coregeous ball, large and malleable; the Alpha ball, softball-sized and firm; and Tune Up balls, able to fit into your palm and extremely dense. We started with the Coregeous ball, tucked under our navel as we lay face down. We were instructed to gently move side to side, and then “north to south”, to engage the superficial layer of muscle. The sensation was strange and mildly uncomfortable, but when we removed the ball to lay flat again, the result was profound: An open, limber feeling in my stomach. “Be kind to your body,” Dwiggins would remind us periodically as we transitioned between movements. We worked with each ball, placing it in strategic areas and using our body weight to massage even the most deeply rooted tension. The most uplifting experience for me was using the Tune Up balls to roll away tightness in my thighs; when we returned to rest, I could practically melt into the mat. The hour and a half long class worked through the most crucial points of tension: the core, back, shoulders, and hips. Some exercises were more difficult than others; however, Jessie insisted we modify the positions if we encountered any pain. “Listen to your body,” she encouraged. I’ll admit, after not engaging my muscles like I should for so many months, I definitely had to be patient, particularly with regards to knots I discovered in my upper back. The class finished with a familiar pose to all yogis: Savasana. Lying flat on my back, palms up, eyes closed, and every fiber of my body now feeling supple and relaxed, I was easily able to float away into a meditative state. By the time we closed the session with a reverent Namaste and applause for our amazing instructor, I was light, limber, and looking forward to trying another class.

Put the Heat On Adrak 2 makes Indian cuisine as spicy as you want it in Westerly Finding good international food in Rhode Island hasn’t always been easy. As a child growing up in North Kingstown, Chinese food was considered exotic. Southern Rhode Island has been especially slow in embracing foods from different cultures, but at last, the long overdue change is coming. I love Indian food, and it was time for Westerly to get its own Indian restaurant. Adrak 2 opened on Canal Street in Westerly last November. The name is slightly confusing because the original Adrak Restaurant in South County Commons has yet to open. Nevertheless, Adrak 2 is located right in the heart of Westerly’s bustling downtown and has its own parking lot, which is a rarity in that part of town. The upscale restaurant is large and open with well-spaced tables, and the comfortable bar seats twelve. There is also an outdoor patio if you wish to dine
alfresco. On a recent Saturday night, my brother, a friend, and I settled into a table by the window overlooking Canal Street. The cocktail list at Adrak 2 is extensive. Although they seem to be known for their jumbo 28-ounce margaritas, I went with a cocktail called the Indian Gold Rush, a blend of Maker’s Mark Bourbon, honey syrup, cardamom bitters, and lemon juice. My friend chose a Whalers Rise from the impressive beer menu. I love Samosas and Gobi 65, so if they are on the menu, it is hard for me to not to order them. The Vegetable Samosas were excellent: the pastry dough on the outside was flaky and crisp, while the inside was filled with well seasoned potato and peas. They provided both a tamarind sauce and a mint sauce for dipping. Gobi 65 is deep-fried cauliflower topped with
sauce. Most versions I’ve tried of Gobi 65 have a sweet sauce, but theirs was more on the spicy side, which we really enjoyed. The cauliflower was double-fried to give it an extra crispness. Since there were three of us, we went all out and got the Bread Basket. Naan is a leavened bread that is a staple of Indian cuisine. In the Bread Basket, there were pieces of butter naan, garlic naan, and onion kulcha. Among the three of us, my brother definitely has the more adventurous palate; he goes out of his way to order the strangest thing on every menu, so he tried the Goat Shukha. Goat can sometimes be stringy or tough, but in this case, the Shukha was marinated in spices before grilling to keep it nice and tender. Most dishes on the menu can be prepared to your preferred spice level; my brother asked for the spiciest possible.

Still, the meat wasn’t so spicy that it ripped the taste buds off of your tongue. My friend is the least adventurous in our group and went with the safe Chicken Tikka Masala. I went with the middle of the road on the adventure scale and tried the Chicken Vindaloo. I asked for it spicy, and it was just right – hot without being dangerous. The chicken was tender, the potato chunks perfectly cooked, and there was plenty of sauce to dip my naan into. All of the entrees were served with their own separate dishes of basmati rice. For people with dietary restrictions, Adrak 2 offers many vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. If you are unsure what you want to order or you have never sampled Indian food before, Adrak 2 offers a lunch buffet on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:30am2:30pm for only $10.99. The Sunny Side of Main Street Karie Myers recalls taking over the century-old Jigger’s Diner
Owner Karie Myers jumped at the chance to restore East Greenwich’s historic Jigger’s Diner
Do you change up the specials? Yes, seasonally. For fall, we have an apple pie French toast, which is stuffed with a sweet cream, Fuji apples, and cinnamon. Winter is all about the pulled pork. We slow roast the pork, shred it, add some barbecue sauce. That will go in an omelet with cheddar cheese. We’ll also do a pulled pork eggs benedict as well as a lunch special. What is the most popular item on the menu? Johnny Cakes. We get our corn meal from Kenyon Grist Mill, which has been around longer than the diner. Our corned beef hash is a close second. We boil the brisket every morning. Same with the potatoes. Nothing is out of a can or a bag. We have a lot of labor-intensive prep to make sure everything is made fresh.
Photography by Ron Cowie
Born from a humble lunch cart purchased in 1917, Jigger’s Diner is one of the few remaining Worcester Lunch Car Company diners in the US. Six years ago, North Kingstown native Karie Myers took the East Greenwich classic out of foreclosure and into the 21st century with her inspired take on diner fare, leading Yankee Magazine to anoint it “one of the 15 best diners in New England.” Myers talks to us about reimagining classic diner food, her go-to breakfast-for-dinner staple, and the thrill of owning a piece of Rhode Island history. Your path to Jigger’s was circuitous. How did you end up here? I owned a restaurant for 10 years but went back into physical therapy after I sold it. I am an entrepreneur at heart and I missed working in the kitchen. I heard from a former restaurant contact that the bank was selling a diner in East Greenwich. As soon
as I saw that was an original Worcester Lunch Car diner, I was sold. I feel such a responsibility towards this place. In the basement, we found a treasure trove of original pieces of the diner, from the original menu that now hangs on the wall. Next to that is a photo of the original owner Vilgot “Jigger” Lindberg. The menu has solid diner cred but there are a lot of twists. When I bought the place I thought, okay classic diner. I have to do eggs, bacon, burgers. But as I got to know my customer base, I learned that they are pretty health conscious. I kept the traditional items for the purists, but I’ve added tons of healthy options. For example, I go through almost 5,000 avocados a week. Just about every dish comes out with an avocado. We also make a black bean sweet potato hash as a healthier option.
What makes the quintessential diner experience? When I see customers come in and enjoy a piece of history. They take pictures, sometimes they want your autograph. Customers who have grown up here are coming back and thanking me for the good food, for keeping Jigger’s open. That’s what drives me. I love this business. I love this town. My staff is amazing. I’m proud of what we built. It’s gratifying. What’s your favorite thing to cook? I’m partial to breakfast, but non-traditional. I think that’s reflected in our food, especially our benedicts. There are nine on the menu and that’s not counting the specials. Does this mean you’re a breakfast-for-dinner person? Can’t go wrong with an omelet. Eggs for any meal!

The Menu Redefines Comfort Food
Omeletes. Wraps. Burgers. These are all-American breakfast and lunch staples, and Rachel’s Cafe delivers with its own unique twist. Think Chicken and Waffle Sliders or Breakfast Pizza in the morning, or their Inferno Pannini or Fig and Onion Burger for lunch. Rachel’s takes old favorites and gives them a creative – and delicious – update.
Food You Can Feel Good About
Fresh is the name of the game at Rachel’s, with local eggs and produce used whenever available. The menu reflects that dedication to fresh and healthy, with options like Avocado Toast and Acai Berry Bowls, as well as the Block Island Wrap – hummus, avocado, veggies, and sharp cheddar cheese in a grilled wheat wrap.
3
The Perfect Drink Pairing
For customers looking for a bit of bubbly with their breakfast, Rachel’s Cafe has sparkling wines and late morning cocktails like Mimosas and Peach Bellinis. For that burger and a beer combo, Rachel’s proves its commitment to locally sourced products by serving South County’s own Whalers Brewing Company Rise APA.
4
Cozy, Calming, Comfortable
Rachel’s was designed to be a place for friends and family to sit back and enjoy each other over a tasty meal in a relaxing setting. The simple decor, consisting of banana leaf wall coverings and light green accents, keeps customers focused on what they came for – a great meal with their favorite people.
5
A Reputation You Can Trust
Owners Greg and Chris Stevens have been serving – and satisfying – customers in Rhode Island for years at their family owned and operated Frankie’s Italian Bistro in North Kingstown, Pat’s Italian Restaurant in Johnston, and Wickford on the Water, as well as Seacoast Sweets, a chocolate company they partnered with to relocate from Massachusetts to Pawtucket. They bring the same dedication to quality and service that have defined their restaurants to Rachel’s Cafe.

One Night in Narragansett A midweek deal at the The Break Hotel is a perfect getaway for two
The name of the deal is Wine, Dine, and Doze Wednesdays, and if you happen to be free for two consecutive weekdays, it’s an incredible bargain: The Break Hotel is one of the most recognizable hotels in South County, a stone’s throw from the coast. Describing itself as “surfer chic,” The Break still offers luxurious rooms all winter, when the rest of Narragansett goes quiet and only a handful of surfers dot the ice-crusted beach. Many couples would jump at a $200 get-

away, but the package goes well beyond accommodations. You are also admitted to Wine Wednesdays, a tasting with paired hors d’oeuvres, and receive an $85 credit to your meal at Chair 5, the hotel’s acclaimed restaurant. And as if that weren’t enough, you can order a bottle of wine with your dinner for half-off. While there are some holiday conflicts and blackout periods, the deal is good for most Wednesday stays between now
and March 31 of next year. This is a pretty chill time for Narragansett – in every sense of the word – but guests with spare cash may also take advantage of the hotel spa, natural gas fireplaces, and a covered rooftop lounge for seasonal cocktails and coastal views. Narragansett may be quieter this time of year, but for a little solitude (and off-season discounts), this is a hard deal to beat. Narragansett, TheBreakHotel.com

Welcome House received financial assistance from a range of South County restaurants this year
Photo courtesy of Welcome House of South County
50% OFF YOUR FIRST WEEK WITH CODE SORHODY Last year, Welcome House served 18,000 meals to hungry people in South County. Some were homeless. Others had issues with substance abuse. Whoever they were, whatever their circumstances, Welcome House provided food and recouperation, thanks to its 17-bed shelter. Now they’re getting a boost from local restaurant owners, who have been raising funds and making donations to Welcome House. Sponsors include Aunt Carrie’s Seafood, George’s of Galilee, Matunuck Oyster Bar, Mews Tavern, Monahan’s Clam Shack by the Sea, Ocean Mist, Phil’s Main Street Grille, Spain of Narragansett, and Two Ten Oyster Bar and Grill. “Many people think of South County as a tourist destination, with its beachfront summer homes and renowned restaurants, but are unaware of the acute hunger and homelessness that also exist here,” said Allison Martinez, Welcome House’s director. “Our area’s high cost of living has more and more people struggling with basic needs like food and shelter.” Welcome House celebrated the new sponsorship program with a banner over the front door, thanking each restaurant.
