PAINTING THE TOWN This month, artists will be coming together to decorate Westerly with a series of public murals. Bricks and Murals (BricksAndMurals.org) will be hosting the Walldogs, an international group of artists specializing in large-scale public art projects, in a five-day blitz that will bring stunning murals to life all around downtown Westerly and Pawcatuck. Local artist and project leader Cam Bortz has worked with the Walldogs on projects in the Midwest, and is excited about bringing them to Rhode Island for their East Coast debut. For their part, the Walldogs are excited about a change of scenery. “They’ve been asking me when I was going to do something out East. They’re tired of looking at the same
cornfields all the time!” he says. After years of conversations and planning, 14 murals depicting the towns’ history will be going up from September 13 to 17. Planned murals include a tribute to Westerly and Stonington’s long-running Thanksgiving football rivalry, Pawcatuck’s industrial legacy and the Great Hurricane of 1938. More than just visually appealing, these works will help to preserve and promote the towns’ local histories. “I liken it to the same purpose stain glass windows serve; there’s a story in every picture,” says Westerly town councilor Jean Gagnier. “I love the history and the art, but in real ways it helps to cement a community.” International artists group the Walldogs will paint murals around Westerly and Pawcatuck

So Happening So & So HISTORY ON FIRE
Local History Abounds at the Jamestown Fire Memorial & Museum In the heart of Jamestown is a memorial to firefighters that’s bursting with history, restored fire engines and stories – the Valmont “Bucky” Caswell Museum. Ken Caswell oversees the collection and building named for his 89-year-old father, who has served the department as Captain of Engine 2 and Tanker 1 since May of 1949. Along with dedicated volunteers, such as 47-year veteran Lew Kitts, the department has steadily built a remarkable collection of firefighting relics, from a horse-drawn “hand tub” to ingenious alarm systems. Originally constructed with timbers reclaimed from two World War II prisoner-of-war camps at Fort Getty and dedicated in 1959, the museum was expanded in 1986 as the collection grew. You can see a 1946 American LaFrance truck stationed behind a working 1894 LaFrance steam-powered pumper purchased new by the station. Before racing to a fire, firemen would (ironically) stoke their own fire with coal beneath the boiler to create pressure, which pushed water through hoses stored on carts all around the island. One of the remaining carts stands outside the memorial’s big red doors, where upwards of a thousand people visit each year. “It’s all volunteer dollars, nickles and dimes,” Ken says. Donations have come from all over the state, including photographs, axes, radios, helmets, ladders, bells and whistles. One donated treasure is the Pawtucket-built 1859

Jeffers pumper. When the bell rang, men pulled the pumper with ropes through the streets; others ran behind it to slow it down, and forty more had to work the two overhead arms in order to pump water. Volunteers are the heart of the memorial and museum,
the 130-member department and, most importantly, Jamestown’s safety. The memorial is located at 50 Narragansett Avenue and is open most weekends – “if we can get someone to open the doors,” Ken says with a smile. –Todd Corayer

BIG SCREEN BRAVERY
Local Filmmakers Celebrate an Unsung Hero Many superheroes made their way onto the big screen this summer, but on September 8, Rhode Island’s Verdi Productions will be sharing the story of a real-life hero with the documentary Man in Red Bandana (Facebook: Man in Red Bandana). Man in Red Bandana follows Welles Remy Crowther, who was working on the 104th floor of the South Tower on September 11 and reportedly saved the lives of many before he passed away that day. Welles’ trademark red bandana, which he wore in his right back pocket, helped eyewitnesses identify him. Through footage and testimonials, the film examines the many individuals who have been inspired by Welles’ actions in the South Tower. “Welles’ story is incredible,” says producer Chad Verdi. “What most people don’t know is that he always wanted to be a firefighter. He gave up his life for others.”
The film is the debut effort of writer and director Matthew Weiss, who first learned about Welles’ remarkable story from Welles’ father. Matthew teamed up with Chad and Joshua Sason as well as Gwyneth Paltrow, who narrates the film, and Lyle Lovett, who performs an original song on the soundtrack. The documentary was accepted into the Napa Valley Film Festival and the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival, and won the International Humanitarian Award last month at the Flickers’ Rhode Island International Film Festival. This month it will open throughout Rhode Island and in major cities across the country, including New York City, Los Angeles and Chicago. “Documentaries aren’t really in theatres, so this is a big deal,” says Chad. “If there was a gentleman who took off his suit and the Superman logo was branded underneath, it would be Welles.” –Morgan Banville

So Happening So & So 125 YEARS AND COUNTING
The Westerly Library Is Evolving with the Times As technology continues to change the way we exchange ideas and information, old institutions are being forced to rethink the services they choose to provide. This is exactly what the Westerly Library and Wilcox Park, two entities that comprise the non-profit Memorial and Library Association of Westerly (WesterlyLibrary. org) and are celebrating their 125th anniversary this year, have learned to do. As traditional print books and news become less popular modes of accessing information, the library has changed its approach to providing services to the public while remaining true to its roots. “Libraries are using technology as just another resource to get information to people,” says executive director Brigitte Hopkins. “We want to preserve our history, but at the same time, we also want to provide our community with what their interests and needs are now.”
The newly renovated computer lab and makerspace are examples of how libraries can cater to the changing needs of the public. Just as printed books were not always accessible commodities, certain forms of technology are simply unaffordable. The makerspace’s amenities include a sewing machine, a 3-D printer, video and music recording hardware and software and media conversion equipment, all available to everyone from coding and robotics clubs to locals in need of mockup fasteners. “We are kind of building it as we discover what our community needs are,” says Brigitte. Thanks to a recent grant from the Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services and the Rhode Island Office of Innovation, the Westerly Library will be able to extend its technology services to artists through the use of products like iPad Pros and Apple TV. As Brigitte explains, the
purpose of the grant is “to bring the arts to our community members.” Programs including animation classes and knitting and crochet groups adhere to the library’s “overall theme,” she says: “that anyone can be an artist.”
The time is ripe for the library to make big, innovative changes to its offerings: “We only have a 125th anniversary once,” Brigitte points out. So far, the year is shaping up to be a memorable one. –Emily Blay
INDIGENOUS CULTURE
When asked why Rhode Islanders should learn their state’s indigenous history, Lorén Spears’ response is straightforward: “There is no history without indigenous history.” Lorén serves as the executive director of the Tomaquag Museum (TomaquagMuseum.org) in Exeter, Rhode Island’s only indigenous history museum and one of only ten recipients of last year’s national medal for museum and library service. The museum houses a variety of fascinating artifacts, ranging from an 1850s birchbark canoe donated by Lorén’s grandmother to running gear worn by Ellison “Tarzan” Brown, a US team member in the 1936 Berlin Olympics and two-time winner of the Boston Marathon. As Lorén says, “We want [people] to know our history but also about our community today.” The museum’s doors open twice a 18

week for regular visiting, and it offers a kids-oriented Children’s Hour on Friday mornings. To get everyone
acquainted with each other, a museum educator starts the hour by teaching the kids how to introduce
themselves in the Narragansett language and leads a welcoming dance. Then, everyone goes on a scavenger hunt and takes part in an activity based around a theme, such as “environment” or “basketry.” This month, these activities will include a nature walk and making nature stamps, cranberry ornaments and blankets. Each day ends with a farewell dance. On September 23, the museum will be throwing its Cranberry Thanksgiving Festival. In addition to music, dance and a ceremony conducted by a tribal elder, the celebration will feature authentic indigenous art by members of the Narragansett community and an appearance by Paulla Jennings, a nationally renowned Narragansett storyteller and educator. And, of course, there’ll be plenty of delicious cranberries and cranberryrelated dishes. –Trent Babington

John Swienton Still Has the Best Advice for Block Island’s Visiting Anglers
Writers Celebrate the Ocean State in a New Anthology
Steven Porter founded
Photography (L) by Tracy Finn
John Swienton always seems
to be peering out from under his low-slung hat brim. Back in the day, the classic swordfish hat was his de facto trademark, long before his Eat Fish shirts became a must-have for tourists and islanders alike. John doesn’t always have much to say or time to say it, but he’s quick to smile even when busy with his Twin Maples apartments, the bait and tackle shop, boats, docks, guests and, most importantly, his family. “We don’t really take anyone new” into the apartments, he says. “We use the same charts each year. We just change the dates.” Twin Maples is a throwback, a place where some guests have been staying with his family since the 1960s. Spread across the back side of Block Island’s Trim Pond, it’s a reminder of how the island operated before air conditioning and the constant distractions people avoided by going to the island. Twin Maples was originally built for WWII soldiers who never arrived; John’s parents, Mackie and Madeline, purchased the apartments in 1949, then turned them into guest cottages. Having grown up with the family business, John maintains them just as his parents did: keeping them comfortable, clean and efficient. Even though there’s no heat for cold fall nights, John keeps Twin Maples open through late October to accommodate returning striper fishermen. “The
fishermen who come in the fall, they know it. They fish all night and sleep all day, so they’re warm,” John says with a smile. John always has time to tell a customer where the fish are, who caught what where or what bait has been seen in the harbor, often as the fishermen weigh and photograph their catches, or buy a t-shirt or a bag of eels. Through the summer he’s busy checking his minnow traps each day, changing over cabins for returning guests, retying boats in an afternoon blow, waiting on customers and watching his young granddaughters restock shirts and stick price tags on lures. With a tackle shop out front, a dock out back and John’s constant attentiveness, it takes a lot of work to keep things simple. John graduated from the island school where his wife Bonnie taught for 25 years. While his four children are grown now, they return for summers and visits with their own five children. For years John lobstered from his Repco 37, the Bonnie S, then on short fall days cleared the deck for totes of surf clams to catch codfish within sight of Clay Head. Mornings are the best time to catch John, when surfcasters pull in for some sleep and while he’s out pushing his grandkids in their strollers. While his face might be hidden beneath that hat, it can’t hide his big smile. – Todd Corayer
the Association of Rhode Island authors (RIAuthors.org) to help local writers network and navigate the publishing industry. He expected a few applicants; it turns out, however, that there are plenty of authors in the Ocean State and plenty of Rhode Islanders who really want to read books written by locals. “When we formed five years ago,” says Steven, “it was news to many that Rhode Island even had an active literary scene. Now we have 280 members who work together and appear at libraries, bookstores, schools, expos and other events almost every week.” Upcoming activities include the Calamari Festival in Narragansett on September 9, RICFest on September 30 and the Scituate Art Festival on Columbus Day weekend. Fairgoers can stop by the booth to browse books and chat with their authors. There’s something for every reader, as ARIA counts “poets, historians, illustrators, novelists and children’s writers” among its ranks. The group often stages their own events as well, namely the “Lively Literati” open mic night at the Elephant Tea Room in Pawtuxet Village, where, on the last Thursday of each month, a couple of ARIA’s members recite their work, then open the floor to the audience. And for those of us who’d rather just read an anthology compiled by the association, Under the Thirteenth Star, consisting of “essays and poetry inspired by those things that are uniquely Rhode Island,” launches online and in select local bookstores this month. When asked why ARIA’s authors often choose to set their stories in their home state, Steven replied simply, “Rhode Island is a great place to write. We have over one million people living in a very small place. We have incredible cultural diversity and history all around us… and it seems we have an extra dose of graft and corruption.” –Trent Babington September 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

CRIMETOWN Behind the scenes with the creators of the smash hit podcast By Tony Pacitti
Hosts Zac Stuart-Pontier (left) and Marc Smerling
W
hen Crimetown (CrimetownShow.com) debuted last November, it was an instant podcast phenomenon, a gripping saga of crime and corruption that made the story of Rhode Island’s cops, robbers and rogues a weekly must-listen event. Hot off the success of their HBO documentary series The Jinx, creators and hosts Marc Smerling and Zac Stuart-Pontier proved that truth is always going to be stranger than fiction. While in town for a couple of sold-out Crimetown Live appearances, we caught up with Marc and Zac on Providence’s historic and notorious Federal Hill (obviously) to talk about why they followed up their HBO series with a podcast about organized crime and, of course, Buddy Cianci. So why did you guys choose Providence to kick off Crimetown? Marc: I have family up here through a prior marriage, but I had no idea about Providence other than [that] it was a city between Boston and New York. When I started coming here regularly for family reasons, I really started to understand the weird nature of relationships in Rhode Island, which are very close. You would go to these family picnics and there would be part of the family that’s kind of connected, and then there’s part of the family that are Rhodes scholars. I was fascinated, and my father-in-law introduced me to Buddy. I got to meet him between going to journalism school at Syracuse at Newhouse and graduate school for film at USC. It was a very vulnerable stage – he was in this tortured place. It was right before DeLeo [ED: Buddy assaulted contractor Raymond DeLeo with a fireplace log for having an affair with his wife] because I remember soon after I read about this thing with the fireplace log. So he was brooding at the end of the bar at the Biltmore Hotel over a drink and a cigarette, but when I came over he lit up and we talked for a while. He was a very charismatic guy.

Then when I read that article, I was like, “This is kind of Providence.” Then when he got reelected, it was “Oh, that is Providence.” Zac: We were finishing up The Jinx. The podcast world was kind of blowing up and we were trying to figure out what we were going to do next. I knew Alex Blumberg [ED: Gimlet Media’s CEO, affectionately referred to as “The Podfather” at the end of each Crimetown episode] from my hometown and we had kept in touch over the years, so everything kind of came together. Alex said we should do something crime-related as a podcast and Marc knew about the Providence story, so we started to do interviews. The first interview we did was with [drug trafficker] Charles Kennedy. Marc: [The late Providence Journal reporter] Bill Malinowski was our original contact through a law enforcement person who I knew from years ago. Bill was really helpful. He took me to the courthouse, showed me how to work the system to get trial papers. He was really great. Did you have any concerns about these characters opening up to you? Marc: I think we had an advantage because we were outsiders and because we had come off of Emmy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated [projects]. We had an outside credibility that for some reason… you know how Rhode Island is. This made it feel like it wasn’t going to come back at people. They thought, “We can talk to these guys because we’ve never seen them before.” I would have assumed that it would be the opposite because of that insular nature of Rhode Islanders,
especially the types of people you were talking to. Zac: It still took a long time to develop trust, but I think the outside nature of our approach as journalists was valuable. These are characters that are real people, and a lot of people that write about this are very judgmental. We tried to not say anything one way or the other about their choices, just present their lives. That really appealed to people. With your backgrounds in television and film, what motivated the transition to a podcast? Zac: We were finishing up a project that was super longterm and very expensive. A podcast was something that Marc and I could do together. Marc: This seemed like the best way to create a story where we wouldn’t have people yelling at us about budget and time – we could just do it. We wanted to do something that was about crime, but expansive. Providence was always the story cooking in the back of my mind, this tapestry of corruption in a town where it’s very understandable in a way because of the close connections and the loss of industrial might of the city during the century. We wanted to do something bigger. Try pitching that. “What I want to do is a very intricate study of a city and crime” and people will be like, “Okay, get the next guy in here.” Especially when the city you’re presenting isn’t a New York or an LA. Marc: We got a lot of “it’s too provincial.” But the financial commitment, to Alex’s credit, was not that big in the beginning and Alex was basically like, “I’ll bet on the guys.” Because we heard that: it’s too provincial,
nobody cares about that, the mob’s been done a million times. But for us it was always about mob influence on political corruption. It was about how what was happening on Federal Hill, not just in a physical day-to-day way but in a cultural way, had crossed the highway and was happening downtown as well. What were your thoughts when the mayor said recently that he felt Crimetown was bad for Providence? Zac: To the mayor’s credit, that quote was taken a little bit out of context. When I first read it, I was like, “He said that?” but then I read the quote. And he’s the mayor of the city, I mean what’s the guy going to say. Marc: But that attitude of dismissing the “fake news” or the reality of what happened in the past is exactly what perpetuates that bad behavior in the future. You can’t really fix anything unless you bring it out into the light and show everybody. The title is a little hard to swallow, and we suffered over that, but it ends up being a very sticky title. Ultimately the show is very honest, and it’s a piece of transparency on how history has happened in this town that I think needed to be told in the way it was told. The timing really seemed right because after Buddy died and as the presidential election was ramping up, there were a lot of comparisons made to Trump and their cults of personality. Zac: I don’t know if that’s being fair to Mr. Cianci, if I’m being honest. Marc: Buddy was a very high functioning person.
Zac: And I do think he tried to do good. Marc: I think when Buddy came into office, they were desperate times, and Buddy projected that type of personality that people could get behind to change things. And I think people are desperate, particularly in the middle of the country and the South, and for some reason they’ve latched onto another cult of personality. Was the idea always to have the rise and fall of Buddy be the backbone of the series? Marc: He was going to be a big character, no doubt, and Raymond [Patriarca], but other than that we didn’t really know. Raymond was a challenge because no one talked about him in a personal way until we met Dr. Barbara Roberts. We had a problem trying to round him out as a person. But it’s funny, there are two names you can say in Providence and everybody knows who they are: Raymond and Buddy. Huge personalities, and very polarizing.

Were any of the people you spoke to particularly surprising? Zac: You should have seen our faces when Gerry Tillinghast told us he was a dungeon master. “Like Dungeons and Dragons?” “Yeah, yeah, love it! I got this cat [that] I can see through.” If he made this up we wouldn’t have believed it at all. Marc: That’s Rhode Island. It’s always surprising. The state has a great sense of humor about itself, but it also has a sense of forgiveness. It’s kind of extraordinary.

Treasure Island Jamestown Arts Center brings world-class arts to a small community By Megan Schmit • Photography by Blink of An Eye Photography
Providence might be well known for its world-class art scene, and rightfully so, but you don’t have to venture up to the city to find creative masterpieces. The Jamestown Arts Center (JamestownArtCenter.org) has set out to make the world of art accessible to the state’s smaller, rural communities. In 2007, eight Jamestown artists and art lovers noticed a need on the island for a creative hub: a place for individuals to gather, practice their art form of choice and experience the arts as a community. In the following years, the JAC team reached out to the local community for both expertise and support and were greeted with enthusiasm. They launched a campaign to purchase a former boat repair shop to house the center and hired executive director Lisa Utman Randall as the center’s first staff member. After extensive renovations, the JAC opened its doors in July of 2011, and has thrived ever since. “There are so many ways different people can have an entrée into the arts if they have a community center that’s embedded into the community and run and populated by people in the town,” says Lisa. “We really try to have art experiences that meet people at whatever level they are.”

T
he arts center may appear unassuming from the outside, but it is a vibrant home to multiple artistic disciplines. The refurbished space has rooms dedicated to classes in pottery, painting, drawing, printmaking and computer graphics. A gallery space presents rotating exhibits featuring both local and internationally known artists like Barbara Kruger and Lesley Dill. And at its heart is a spacious multi-purpose room that hosts a little bit of everything, including theatre performances, film screenings, concerts and book launches. Accommodating so many different disciplines under one roof has proved to be more of an asset than a challenge, according to Lisa. It keeps the center dynamic, lively and unique. The eclectic programming can be a little chaotic, but the musical chairs of rotating events is made possible by volunteers always willing to lend a hand. “A big part of our mission is the word ‘extraordinary,’” says Lisa. “We want to bring extraordinary, world-class visual and performing arts here to this small island.” Big names have graced the JAC’s stage, including Broadway’s Stephen Wallem and Providence-born actor Tony Estrella who appeared in The Departed and Manchester by the Sea. And in late September, the JAC will be hosting the Manhattan Short Film Festival, a global event for film lovers.

T
he expansion of the center’s reputation has come with its own set of challenges. The JAC has to maintain a balance of professionalism and community feel, offering the quality of art sophisticated art consumers expect, while accommodating artistic newcomers. It is a fine line to walk for a small-town arts center with a big-city vision, but the community’s reception has been overwhelmingly positive. “A lot of people walk in the door and say ‘our arts center’ and ‘we’re doing great things here’,” says Lisa. “That sense of ownership is really heartwarming and necessary for us to continue succeeding.” The community’s unwavering presence as students, donors, fundraisers, volunteers and audience members has had an immense impact on the JAC’s success. The relationship between the JAC and Jamestown is reciprocal, and as the community engages with the arts center, so does the JAC engage with local groups and organizations. “We do a lot in terms of making this space available for some of the incredibly talented people that are in our community,” says Lisa. “And we work really hard to make this place really for everybody.” This means the JAC has screened senior class projects, hosted field trips, partnered with local universities, provided enrichment programming to public schools, invited the senior center to view formal dress rehearsals and worked with the Bridges organization for adults with developmental disabilities. They host members’ shows, holiday arts markets and open studios and rent out the multipurpose room for locals to get as much access to the JAC’s facilities as possible. “We’ve really seen that this has become an incredible gathering space for conversations about the arts,” says Lisa. “There isn’t another facility like this kind around.”
D
espite only being open for six years, the JAC has become a fixture in Jamestown. The team hopes to expand the island’s artistic enthusiasm to other areas of Rhode Island and encourage residents all over the state to take advantage of this access to quality art experiences. With that vision comes some strategic planning,
like partnering with more Jamestown- and Newport-based organizations to draw new visitors to the center. They also hope to fund an exhibit of outdoor sculpture to engage more families from all over the island. “That’s a big, big project,” Lisa says. “But that’s something we would love to do because the goal is to continue to expand the accessibility to the arts.” Additional plans for the center include refinishing the exterior with curbing and trees and adding solar panels to the roof. For now, the JAC looks forward to offering classes for the fall as well as some special exhibits and events in September. These include Natasha Harrison and Maggie Nowinski’s exhibit in Crescita, which will feature a range of media such as glass, pen and ink drawings, collage and transparent light box dioramas. “It’s an exciting place,” says Lisa. “And I think a lot of people feel really proud that they have an organization like this in their town.” September 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Classes start at 6pm with the West Coast Swing Flash Mob, then move on to Hustle and Rumba before the real fun starts at 8pm: a lesson in the dramatic, romantic Argentine Tango. For the rest of the night after these lessons, it’s open dancing and tango practice. Go there with your S.O. for a different kind of date night, or head to the Towers solo - there’s no partner required. Live on a prayer, don’t stop believin’ or pump up the jams - just make sure your pipes are in good working order and you’ve got a great rally song prepared for karaoke at Billy Hill’s Roadhouse (BillyHillsRoadhouse.com) in Wyoming. Tuesday and Thursday nights, bring your most beloved ‘80s jams - whether you actually choose songs from hair bands is up to you, but just know that some karaoke aficionados consider it a party foul to sing sappy songs. On Wednesday and Thursday nights, Club Roxx hosts karaoke. There’s even a stage for you to truly feel like you’re having your 15 minutes of fame. Just remember - even if you totally strike out, you’re at a bowling alley. It’s technically a good thing. What was once The Knickerbocker Cafe is now The Knickerbocker Music Center (KnickMusic. com). ince its impressive renovation, The Greenwich Odeum (GreenwichOdeum.com) has been bringing in huge names in music like Todd Rundgren and Peter Noone. This month, they’re hosting Doug Woolverton’s Tribute to Miles Davis on September 16, Big Head Todd and the Monsters on September 23 and Spyro Gyra on September 30. A word to the wise: check their schedule far in advance. The seating is limited and the big shows sell out fast. Part art gallery, part theatre performance space, part live music venue,
The Courthouse Center for the Arts (CourthouseArts.org) defies description, except to say that there’s something fun and interesting happening there nearly every night of the week. Concerts this month include a September 16 tribute to Bob Dylan, and a performance by the legendary bluesman Duke Robillard on September 23. The tourist season may end for Block Island this month, but that just means there’s going to be even more room to dance at Captain Nick’s Rock and Roll Bar (CaptainNicksBI.com). The kitschy pirate
theme only adds to the good times and laid-back island vibes. The Captain has The Booze Beggars playing on September 2, and Dr. Westchesterson on September 3. You might need to cross two bridges to get there, but the drive to the Newport Blues Cafe (NewportBlues.com) is worth it. The venue is known for curating killer local bands, and has live music every Friday and Saturday all year long. This month features performances by World Premier on September 8, Velvet Skies on September 16 and 7 Day Weekend on September 29.

Feel the (Rock and) Blues It’s hard to put your finger on the best part of The Narragansett Cafe (NarragansettCafe.com) in Jamestown. Sure, it’s a low-key neighborhood bar that serves good food and affordable drinks. Sure, it’s open 365 days a year. Sure, they have a killer Sunday afternoon Blues, Bloodies and Brunch. But on top of all that, The Ganny has live music every
Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, plus Sunday afternoons. And it’s not just any music - it’s bands from all over New England that deliver rock and the blues, the kind of live and loud music you can’t help but dance to, even if you don’t think you’re the dancing type. Maybe the best part is this: there’s never a cover.

Play a Mean Pinball The new trend in after-dark fun around these parts isn’t actually new at all. Vintage games have been taking over bars all over the state, with two barcades opening in Providence in the last year. Flip Side Pinball Bar (FlipSidePinBall.bar) in Westerly is South County’s first gamer bar, with a rotating selection of pinball games
– right now it’s a selection from the ‘90s and ‘00s, with classics like The Addams Family and Lord of the Rings. Tuesday nights are co-ed league nights, and Thursdays are the Women’s League. Both offer friendly competition and prizes, plus craft beers on draft and signature cocktails.
A Splash for a Good Cause Work off those beers at the 27th annual Mist to Mews Canoe & Kayak Race (MewsTavern.com) on September 24, a fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior Project. Participants start at The Ocean Mist and race by water to Mews Tavern in Wakefield. Prizes are awarded in lots of categories, including single and double canoe, standup paddleboard and wounded warrior.

Test your mettle at the RI Riddle Room (RIRiddleRoom.com) in East Greenwich, which is the first interactive escape room in the state south of Providence. Choose from two adventures: The Murder Mystery (a crime drama) or La Cosa Nostra (a police and mafia story). What makes this place unique is that they utilize parts of Rhode Island’s history in their games, like the Ladd Center Asylum and Federal Hill.
The Charlestown Rathskeller (TheCharlestownRathskeller.com) is no ordinary restaurant. This little piece of Bavaria serves German-inspired pub food, including their rightly famous fries. Outside at the Rathskeller, there’s a dining patio, but there’s also volleyball courts - in the summer they host tournaments - and cornhole games, with Thursday night tournaments. They also host regular Sunday Funday festivities and live bands throughout the week.
Show off your hustling skills at Bo’s Bar and Billiards (BosBarAndBilliards.com) in Warwick, which has 25 pool tables, and offers free pool on Sunday evenings. In addition to their full menu and extensive bar, Bo’s also has an arcade with air hockey and enough games to make you feel like a kid again... at least until your alarm goes off on Monday morning.

A WELL-DESIGNED LIFE When the Cosgroves were looking to relocate from their North Kingstown home, they set their sights on East Greenwich, and decided to build from the ground up. Once they
conquered the actual house, it was time to tackle the great outdoors of their yard, working with a landscape designer who created a backyard oasis that’s beautiful in any season.

Coastal Vibes More than seven years
ago, Jen Cosgrove and her husband were looking to move from North Kingstown to East Greenwich. After scanning the local real estate offerings, the couple ultimately decided to have a home built according to their wants and needs. “I wanted a home that had a coastal feel to it with a unique architecture style,” says Jen. “Our builder worked with us to develop the blueprints for the house and I love the way it looks.” First impressions were important to the couple, so the Cosgroves ensured that the moment friends and family pulled into the driveway, they would feel,

well, at home. “The house almost welcomes you to come right to the front door,” Jen explains. Jen is an accomplished interior designer with an eponymously named firm, so it should come as no surprise that her home is meticulously laid out with useful and unique features. With many extended family members based out of town, she and her husband decided that the home would need five bedrooms and seven bathrooms. “I have a thing for bathrooms and we seem to have one everywhere you turn,” Jen admits. “Our daughter was also just being born as we moved into this house, so it
was important that she had her own bathroom separate from the boys.” The couple’s two sons share a bathroom between their bedrooms, Jen and her husband have a bathroom in their master suite, there is a guest half-bath on the first floor, and there is a full bath in the basement. “And at the last minute, we decided to convert a closet in the mudroom into a bathroom,” Jen says. “I wanted the children to have a bathroom to use separate from the guest bath and one that they could access quickly from the yard.” Jen describes the kitchen as “the hub” of the family home. “We do
everything at our island and the windows allow us to see everything going on in the back,” she says. The living room is also a pivotal, hightraffic space. “It’s a hidden gem in the front of our house. It’s nice to have a small cozy space to retreat to when you want to be alone or when entertaining a small group of friends.” As the family got settled in the home, the spaces served them well; the Cosgroves’ fashionable, functional home could easily accommodate their growing family. But years later, they decided that, while the home was warm and inviting, the backyard space had room for improvement.

“I love the outdoors and felt like our current patio wasn’t servicing us well,” explains Jen. “I had a lot of different ideas, including the possibility of a three-season room. After meeting with our contractor, Erin Oden, we started playing around with a lot of different ideas.” A self-confessed “design nerd,” Jen worked closely with Erin to create a space that could serve all the various functions needed by a busy family that often entertained. The dynamic design duo devised a plan featuring a cabana that would include an intimate outdoor
kitchen, dining space and fireplace where family and guests could sit, relax and unwind. The challenge the Cosgroves faced, as any homeowners do when embarking on an addition or significant renovation, was to marry the existing home with the new features. “We wanted the new space to look like it was part of our home from the beginning,” explains Jen. “So Erin worked very hard to match our current architectural style.” The Cosgroves also wanted the new patio cabana to reflect its New England environs,
which Erin executed by using materials common throughout the region, including bluestone. Their diligent planning has paid off exponentially as the family has enjoyed quiet evenings around the fireplace and welcomed extended family and friends to enjoy the new space. A vegetable garden and fruit trees have been added to the landscape as well. “I love our yard, as it is very private,” says Jen. “Now that we have our new cabana, I love it even more.” The old cobbler’s proverb (“The cobbler’s children have no shoes”)
clearly doesn’t ring true in the Cosgrove home, and it’s clear that Jen’s interior design skills allowed her to stay true to the mission she maintains with each client: to create beautiful spaces that enhance the enjoyment and quality of life and reflect the client. Jen offers this advice to anyone considering working with an interior designer to renovate or refresh a space: “Trust your instinct that things need to be updated. Feel confident in your ideas and seek the help of those you love to offer advice.” September 2017 | SO RHODE ISLAND

Skin Care Goes Green The owners of Curious Nature Apothecary on the importance of all-natural self-care Jill Sarmento and Gina Browning of Curious Nature Apothecary share both a friendship and a business partnership rooted in their communal love for nature and self-care. Their line of all-natural aromatic oils, scrubs, serums, butters and balms soothes not only the skin but also the soul. Jill and Gina, who started Curious Nature in West Greenwich, took a moment to fill us in on the benefits of botanical skin care and their own favorite rituals.
Jill and Gina of Curious Nature Apothecary
How did you two get your start turning your love for nature and self-care into a business? It was honestly a very organic process. Using our knowledge of ingredients and formulation led to creating, which led to questions, which led to more learning and more experimenting and more formulation and so on. We were enjoying the process and had the great advantage of knowing some lovely, supportive local business owners who gave us a little nudge to get our product line to market.
Photography by Michael Cevoli
What’s it like being both longtime friends and business partners? Great! It’s a pleasure to work with someone you admire, respect and have fun with. If there’s any disadvantage, it would be our tendency to get a little off track during our work time, using our time to just socialize and hang out. But when we’re both complicit in that, we can kind of scold each other, forgive each other and just move on. What are the benefits of all-natural products? What we truly adore about working with and using ingredients from nature is the exceptional quality of their textures, colors and aromas. For the skin, plant oils offer a wealth of beneficial fatty acids and vitamins to promote softness, while plant
butters and beeswax can help form an occlusive barrier on the skin to help prevent against moisture loss. We always stress knowing your allergies and choosing products carefully, whether natural or conventional. What kind of local ingredients do you use in your products? We love sourcing locally whenever we can. We use some beautiful botanicals like calendula and lavender flowers, as well as beeswax and honey from local bees. How do you get the ideas for different products?
Curious Nature Apothecary CuriousNatureApothecary.com
We tend to have the most fun and get the most creative when formulating and blending the aromatic aspect of our products. Our solid perfume line was inspired by our love of vintage novels and fashions, especially [from] the Edwardian and Victorian eras. Aiming to create a sense of place and personality for each perfume helps them to feel specific, yet unique. What are some must-haves? We’ve been told our Avocado & Lime Lip Balm is addictive, though each of our lip balms has a little niche of fans. Our Juice & Juniper Body Oil is another customer favorite. Do you think you’ll ever invest in a storefront location? We relocated to a larger space fairly recently. It won’t ever be a storefront,
but we hope to start offering some open-studio shopping days on a regular basis, as well as special events and workshops. We do have a place that customers can visit for events or occasionally by appointment. Tell us about your favorite selfcare ritual. Like many people, we’re quite busy, so the things that work best on a regular basis tend to be brief but impactful. Five or ten minutes of mindfulness meditation does a world of good at any time of day, and a little quiet time in nature is always restorative. Wearing a favorite aromatic oil or natural perfume and taking a couple of minutes throughout the day to reapply and breathe deeply is super simple, soothing and grounding. things up you end up with a lot more. That’s exactly what happened at Store Four in Wakefield. In her reimagining of the beloved store, owner Ellen Cesario kept all the favorites while bringing in more lines and items to enhance everyday living. “We’ve always called ourselves a lifestyle store,” says Ellen. “Now I look at us as a lifestyle experience.” Widely known as the best place to go for dressing your table, the store now helps customers dress
themselves. No matter what your style, relaxed to elegant, everything you need is right here. Cesario wants you to feel as if you are in her home, so sit on the wicker couch and sip a frosé (a yummy frozen rosé drink) while she helps you pull together all the possibilities for successful entertaining. In addition to the linens and tableware, you will find soft throws, pillows, candles and frames to complement your home as well as fashionable clothing, jewelry and
handbags for yourself. Or, if you need that perfect hostess or wedding gift, you can get some terrific guidance. Special events are in again as they team with Wakefield Liquors to offer food and wine pairings and tastings. Being right next door has its advantages. If you are bringing wine as a gift, stop in to have it wrapped in a colorful tea towel for a wonderful presentation. The personal touch is important at Store Four. Let it be yours.

So Delicious
THE TASTE OF SUCCESS Call it a sweet dream come true: Anchor Toffee (AnchorToffee.com), the candy company started by husband-and-wife duo Katie and Peter Kelly at the Rhode Island food incubator Hope and Main, has just opened its own storefront on Bowen’s Wharf in Newport. Along with the signature Almond Butter Toffee that launched them into the Rhode Island Candymaking Hall of Fame - that doesn’t exist, but, well, we wish it did - the couple is also offering other confections, like
Naked Toffee (without chocolate), dark chocolate and espresso truffles, and seasonal toffees. But trust us, try the original Almond Butter Toffee, which is so popular that they make about 12,000 pounds of it annually. As with all of their treats, Katie and Peter keep it simple: almonds, sweet cream butter, sugar, salt and dark chocolate - but, as the adage goes, there’s beauty in simplicity. And in the case of Anchor Toffee, there’s deliciousness, too.

Beyond the Beach Manisses Restaurant serves upscale seafood fare in a lush garden on Block Island Block Island has myriad options for casual dining and bar food, but what about if you want something a little fancier? Hotel Manisses is a boutique hotel with only 17 rooms, so I was surprised to find that it houses the relatively large, upscale Manisses Restaurant on its lower floor. The restaurant impresses both indoor and out. The recently renovated indoor dining area has a polished beach-house feel, mixing turquoise and gray for a sleek, contemporary vibe. If you prefer to sit outside, which we did on a breezy summer evening, you’ll be pleased to see a number of tables wrapping around the periphery of the dining room. The restaurant doesn’t have water views, but the rest of our Block Island visit was filled with beach vistas, so I appreciated the serenity of the garden, with its beautiful flowers and trickling fountain. As we looked over the cocktail menu, I felt a twinge of embarrassment. My husband wanted to order the Blue Manisses, but neither of us was sure how to pronounce the restaurant’s name. Is the final “es” silent as it would be in French? We had to laugh when our waitress admitted she wasn’t totally sure, either. We forgot our predicament when the drink arrived, a strong martini with lemon vodka, muddled blueberries and basil. I was looking for a refreshing drink without alcohol, so I was thrilled that the
Swordfish a la Siciliana
bartender could make the Spicy Citrus Mojito without the rum. The flavor of grapefruit, orange and lime juices (and the jalapeño, of course) more than compensated for the absence of spirits. Craving ocean flavors after the day’s sun and sand, we both started with seafood-based soups. My husband ordered the Scallop Lobster Bisque and
I, the Spicy Crab and Corn Chowder. I was expecting to feel jealous of his bisque, but my chowder won the soup competition: it was more flavorful and had just the right hint of spice. Next, we shared the Pan Fried Smoked Gouda appetizer. A large portion of breaded and pan-fried cheese was attractively plated with arugula, tomatoes,

pesto, olive oil and edible flowers. I liked the creative use of smoked gouda in this dish. We eagerly made use of any leftover pesto on the warm house rolls, served in a napkin matching the turquoise color scheme. Taking our time, we shared the Strawberry Salad as well. Frisée made a lively base for bright colors and flavors: fava beans, strawberries, cucumber, pistachio and large Parmesan shavings. I was drawn to the description of Seared Day Boat Codfish, which was served over lobster risotto, wilted spinach and checca sauce, a fresh,

uncooked tomato sauce. The risotto contained much more lobster than I expected. My husband ordered the Swordfish a la Siciliana. We loved the bold flavors of olives, capers, raisins and pine nuts in this dish, and the red quinoa made for a creative base. With it, he had a glass of the D’Alfonso Del Sordo Catapanus Bombino Bianco from Puglia, Italy, a bright and lively wine with a slight tropical flavor. We hardly had an appetite left for dessert, but we were enjoying our seats in the garden and wanted to prolong our meal. The desserts at Manisses Restaurant – at least, the two we ordered – are surprisingly large. I chose the Pear Ricotta

Mousse, served between layers of pistachio joconde, a thin sponge cake. The two wedges on my plate were almost as large as slices of pie, and I couldn’t finish them myself, though I did enjoy the traditional spiced pear and cinnamon flavor combination in the mousse. My husband ordered the Warm Hazelnut Brownie. It was satisfying and quite large, but I didn’t mind assisting. After a couple of hours relaxing in Manisses’ garden, we suddenly realized we needed to catch the last ferry back. That’s part of Manisses’ advantage – it’s barely a five-minute walk from the terminal, if you can still walk briskly after those desserts.

Celebrate Local Squid The RI Calamari Festival returns to Narragansett for a third delicious year
The Westerly Land Trust (WesterlyLandTrust.org) is celebrating a big milestone this month: its 30th anniversary. The celebrations will include a farm dinner fundraiser at Avondale Farm Preserve on September 9. Although this is an annual event for the land trust, this year’s dinner will be bigger and better than ever. The Preserve will be transformed into a culinary wonderland, and the event will start with hors d’oeuvres and drinks before moving on to a seated alfresco dinner in a stunning field. The dinner will draw on items grown, caught and raised in Rhode Island, and guests will have the opportunity to learn all about these items from those who procured them.
Brews and Blues There’s nothing better than live music, the ocean and good brews. The Windjammer (WindjammerSurfBarRI.com) in Misquamicut puts all of these together during their Brews and Blues dinner on September 22. Cast your cares away during this supper pairing with local food and over 30 beers and wines to choose from. Listening to live music as the sun goes down is the cherry on top of this foodie sundae.
Nitro Brew On Tap For the third year in a row, the RI Calamari Festival (RICalamariFest.com) will shepherd in the end of summer. The festival pays homage to the internationally renowned squid that’s found right in the Port of Galilee, home to the second largest fishing fleet in New England. During the event, happening this year on September 9 at Narragansett’s Veteran’s Park, folks get to try calamari from 11 participating restaurants for only $10. The Coast Guard House won best overall calamari the very first year. George’s of Galilee took home that honor the following year. This year, Wakefield’s Mews Tavern, Cranston’s Chapel Grille, Narragansett’s Chair 5 and more will vie for the best-of title, as well as awards for most inventive calamari and the restaurant with the most team spirit. All of this translates to a heck of a good reason to stop by and eat as much calamari as you possibly can. There’s plenty more to do once you’ve had your fill. Live music will be playing, local vendors will be selling their wares and a special princess will be stopping by to entertain the little ones. For those who’ve saved room, there will also be food trucks on site to satisfy non-calamari cravings. 58

After percolating on some coffee-related matters, Charlestown’s Dave’s Coffee (DavesCoffee.com) has recently released two new nitro brew blends: Falcon, a light roast, and Red Island Nitro, a dark roast. Both are small batch, artisan brews that have spent three days in kegs charged with nitrogen. The nitrogen adds a carbonation effect to the coffee that in turn makes it ultra creamy. These nitro brews are best served over ice, making it perfect for any Rhody season.

Hip to Be Square Our small state has certainly kept caffeinated with a boom of artisanal coffee and donut shops, but 4corners Coffee brings a new (right) angle to the table. Paying homage to Hoxsie Four Corners, the well-known Warwick neighborhood it’s nestled in, the coffee shop has become popular for a new trend-worthy staple: square donuts. We sat down with head chef Andrea Leonardo to talk about those sweet treats, popular menu items and more. Let’s start at the beginning. How’d you get into the culinary world and baking? A lot of people in my family – my grandfather, uncle and father – are bakers. My dad got out of the business, but my uncle opened up a bakery called Baker Street Bakery in Rochester, New York, and my grandfather was helping him part-time. When I needed a summer job, I got thrown into it because we’re family, so why not help them out? When my grandfather’s doctor made him retire, my uncle needed more help, so I learned European pastries and how to make bread. When I was looking into colleges, my friend gave me an application to Johnson & Wales. I was accepted and studied the savory side of food since I had already learned the sweet side.

What other local kitchens have you worked in? I was with the Marra Restaurant Group for a while and worked up to become their corporate executive chef. Ed Brady, one of the owners of this company (Justin Erickson and Jeffrey Quinlan are also co-owners), was a promoter for Marra at the time. When Ed was looking for an executive chef, I was looking for a job, so I jumped in and helped them open multiple restaurants. Our company owns The Thirsty Beaver, Milk Money, 4corners Coffee, McBlarney’s, Say Cheese and Pink Pig BBQ.

4corners is known for its square donuts. How does that work? I found a company in the town I grew up in that makes customized cutters and anything metal-related, so they fabricated two special square cutters for me. What are some of the most popular flavors? As in any craft bakery, I think, maple bacon is the number one seller. Following that, the classics are always good. People love our s’mores and ice cream sundae flavors. We recently did a take on a blueberry muffin old fashioned, and that did really well, too. We always keep a few standards on the menu, like a simple glazed donut, but we do rotate the donut menu every Monday. It’s based on what’s going on around the area; sometimes it’s whatever we feel like. In July, we focused on different holidays. We featured a Mountain Dew flavor for National Geek Day, which had Sour Patch Kids on it. We also did Christmas in July, bringing back a lot of classic winter flavors.
You also offer a full breakfast menu. What can customers look forward to on the food menu? We have breakfast sandwiches every day and make all of our own English muffins (our most popular bread option) and biscuits. We use local eggs and cheeses. Our square breakfast comes with two eggs, bacon, sausage, toast and our home-fried wedge potatoes, another popular item. The drive-thru opened this summer. Tell us about that. Our drive-thru opens every day at 5am. We have a steady crowd that visits us on their way to work, and the drivethru is, of course, busier on weekends and during mid-afternoon. Drive-thru customers don’t need to worry about missing the weekly donut menu: we left a blank spot on our menu board and write them in every day. What can we expect in the near future from 4corners? We’re going to start doing some popup events with other local businesses around the state. If you’re not in the Warwick area, you’ll be able to check us out at different locations. It’s still in the works, but we’ll be posting all of those on our Instagram page.

Pasquale’s Pizzeria Napoletana It’s not an overstatement to say that Pasquale’s Pizzeria Napoletana has the most authentically Italian pizza in the state. Chef-owner Pasquale Iliano was raised in Italy and trained as a chef in Naples, at the Neapolitan Pizza Academy. His pizzas are baked in an ultra-hot brick oven, built in Naples, and are ready in two minutes each. But because one cannot live on pizza alone – though one can and maybe should try – Pasquale’s serves other delicious Italian options, all made with a simplicity and elegance that lets the quality of the ingredients shine through, like Spaghetti Pomodoro, Linguine alla Vongole and Pasta e Fagiole, paired with exclusive wine from Sorrento. They also serve New York and Grandma-style pizza to go (the Neapolitan is dine-in only) and sandwiches.

So Entertaining
FEEL THE RHYTHM Spend Labor Day weekend dancing your heart out at the Rhythm and Roots Festival (RhythmAndRoots.com) in Ninigret Park in Charlestown on September 1–3. Celebrating its 20th year, the three-day music festival is bringing in major talent, including Roseanne Cash, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy,
The Mavericks and The Squirrel Nut Zippers. There’s also a Cajun Music Camp for kids, and a Family Stage with kidfriendly performers. All that, plus an international food court and an artist marketplace. It’s the closest you’ll get to New Orleans in Rhode Island, so laissez les bon temps rouler.

So Approved Rhode Island on a Roll The number of hot summer days might be winding down, but our craving for classic summer food is still going strong. And if you haven’t had a lobster roll yet this season, you haven’t truly had a Rhode Island summer. So before September ends, be sure to make time for a delicious seafood favorite.
Monstah Lobstah For one of the biggest lobster rolls in the smallest state, head to Finn’s Harborside (FinnsHarborside.com) in East Greenwich. Their Ultimate Lobster Roll comes with two pounds of lobster meat on a bun that is over two feet long. If that sounds daunting, try it in three other sizes, all served in a grilled torpedo roll on lettuce and tossed with mayo and celery.
Bite-Sized If you’re getting bored with the classic lobster roll, switch it up and order yours as sliders at TwoTen Oyster Bar & Grill (TwoTenOBG.com) in South Kingstown. They takes six ounces of fresh lobster meat and combine it with Old Bay seasoning, celery, light mayo and a twist of lemon zest, all resting on shredded lettuce in a toasted hoagie roll.
Classic New England
A Beachside Favorite Aunt Carrie’s (AuntCarriesRI.com) in Narragansett makes the kind of classic lobster roll you want to enjoy at the end of a warm beach day. Fresh creamy lobster overflows from a buttery toasted bun with enough lettuce to give it an extra crispiness – a simple, satisfying taste of summer in Rhode Island.
Photography by Tony Pacitti
The roll at the Cooked Goose (TheCookedGoose. com) in Westerly starts with a New England split top hot dog bun grilled with real butter. They add a soft romaine lettuce leaf and top it off with fresh shucked lobster and a tiny amount of celery and mayo. Served with a side of potato chips and lots of love.
