Woof You Very Much

Don’t Forget Our Heroes

On behalf of the Animal Rescue League of Southern Rhode Island, I would like to thank you and SO Rhode Island for choosing us as the beneficiary of the Savor East Greenwich Kick-Off Party. The ARLSRI was pleased that SO Rhode Island invited us to be a part of this wonderful event. It is the support of local businesses like Providence Media that make it possible for us to save hundreds of homeless pets each year. We look forward to partnering with you again next year. The ARLSRI is proud to be a valued member of the Rhode Island community. Not only are we a safe, no kill shelter where owners can surrender their pets, we help the community in so many other ways. Our pet food pantry helps those struggling to keep their beloved pets at home. The varieties of humane education programs we offer help teach the future generations to respect and care for animals in a humane and responsible way. Our involvement in the community and the services we offer are invaluable. We simply are not able to do any of this without the help of people like you. As a private, nonprofit organization, the ARLSRI receives no municipal or state funding and depends solely on the generosity of individuals. Your donation from the event of $3,651 means so much to us. So once again, many thanks for your support! Tammy B. Welter Executive Director

I’m writing in regards to the the article “A Soldierly Salute” in the November 2012 issue of SO Rhode Island. Last month, we had the honor of a call from one of your writers, Marna Krajeski. She inquired about any information we may have on the persons for whom the Town of South Kingstown Housing Authority’s Public Housing complexes were named after. She took the time to visit our offices for an hour or so and look over some documents we have on the history of Champagne Heights and Fournier Estates. These sites were named after the first two soldiers mentioned in this article. It was disappointing to say the least that not once was it mentioned that the names of these public housing sites, Champagne Heights and

Fournier Estates, were named in honor of these two soldiers. These are large properties in the town. These 72 units are the only public housing units in South Kingstown, which encompasses a very large area of Washington County. Additionally, these units are part of the Rhode Island Consolidated Plan. We would have thought it important for residents of the town and Housing Authority to learn about these properties. It was an honor for these soldiers to have had these housing complexes named after them, for these properties help and house the most vulnerable citizens in our community. Perhaps in knowing the history, people would have a greater respect for the property and the take better care in honoring these fallen soldiers on an ongoing basis. Tracey A. A Seaside Holiday This year, decorate with something a little more nautical Christmas is coming and it’s time to start decorating: tinsel and twine, ribbons and bows, and, of course, locally caught mussels. Yes, mussels. Retired teacher Dale Munsill has found a way to bring Christmas even closer to our home state by using the bounty of

our waters to create beautiful decorative mussel shell trees. What began as an imaginative hobby to bring smiles to friends and family led to a business to extend the enjoyment of her fun holiday gift. She has practiced and perfected this craft for five years,

catching all the local shells by hand and putting them through a fourstep process to bring out the natural glow, color and polish of these jewels that she collects from the sand. The aesthetically pleasing combination of Christmas and Southern Rhode

Island love can be purchased at sizes from 9 inches to two feet, from $65 to $535, during the holiday season at the Ocean House in Watch Hill. Keeping with the holiday spirit 15% of the income will go to charities. dmunsill@ cox.net -Alyssa Schiano

Don’t Call it a Comeback Can you believe how well The Warwick Mall has recovered since the 2010 floods? Instead of walking around in inches of water, you can strut your stuff in brand-spanking new stores such as H&M, Off Broadway Shoes and the new wing anchored by Nordstrom Rack, the offprice division of Nordstrom, which opened in November. Explore the

face-lifted Macy’s and bring the kids to the newly refurbished carousel. The trip wouldn’t be complete without a trip to Pinkberry or the incredible laser show at Jordan’s Furniture. With all the excitement from the novelties, you may not be able to stop yourself from splurging on yourself while you “shop” for others. www. warwickmall.com -Grace Lentini

Small State, Big Project Help support the work of a dedicated Rhode Islander who is passionate about her state. Roberta Mudge Humble has just come out with an interactive DVD and a small booklet, both titled The BIG Rhode Island Quiz Show, to add to her long list of published work about the state. The CCRI English professor will be leaving on Sabbatical in January to travel across the country and give presentations on Rhode Island, a state she describes as “a place that has made a difference in our nation and one that has an incredibly deep history. Rhode Island is not on the short end of any state when it comes to contributions to our country.” She is not receiving money

from anyone for the trip, and is relying heavily on the sale of these items as her main form of financial support. If you want to help Humble travel across the country and dispel the rumors that our state is an actual island, stop by one of your local bookstores and pick up a copy of The BIG Rhode Island Quiz Show. Numerous bookstores across Rhode Island, including Barrington Books, Books on the Square in Providence, Other Tiger in Westerly, and Twice-Told Tales in Cranston have the DVD and booklet in stock, with others expected to receive it soon. The DVD is selling for $9.99 and the booklet for $6.99. www.westerlyarmory.com –Nick Cantor

In the Aftermath of the Storm, Here’s How to Help Areas all across Southern Rhode Island felt the devastating force of Superstorm Sandy. Many businesses near to the shore closed their doors due to disrepair, while some residents were forced to flee for higher ground. Now, in the aftermath of such destruction, Rhode Islanders are encouraged to band together to rebuild and assist with the recovery process. When the power goes out, as it did for many Rhode Island families, the first things to go are perishable foods in the refrigerator or freezer. For this reason, the WARM Center, located in Westerly, is asking for Stop & Shop gift card donations. These donations will be given out to families in need of food recovery assistance due to loss of power. If interested, please call the Warm Center at 401-596-9276 or go to www.warmcenter.org. To assist with connecting damaged businesses or homeowners with the appropriate repairmen, the Charlestown Chamber of Commerce is managing a referral system. All carpenters, electricians, painters, tree removers and other specialty trades are encouraged to contact the Chamber to receive a list of referrals needing such trade services. Businesses or homeowners not already on the referral list should also contact the Chamber, which can be reached at 401-364-3878 or at www.charlestownrichamber.com. The actual repair of southern Rhode Island requires manpower, and it takes a special kind of person to dedicate time and sweat to putting back all the pieces of this broken puzzle. Many individuals have stepped forward to help, but Serve Rhode Island is still seeking volunteer help for clean-ups and other services. All interested parties should contact Bernie Beaudreau at 401-331-2298 or sign up at www.

Post-Sandy destuction at Misquamicut Beach in Westerly

serverhodeisland.org. Thanks to the digital abilities of Facebook, individuals across the state have come together to create a massive one-day clean-up event, happening on November 23. Called the Post Sandy Thanksgiving Cleanup, the event already includes over a hundred people willing to burn off their Thanksgiving meals by cleaning up areas affected by the storm. If interested, search for the event on Facebook and join the event’s page, where more details will be announced as the date approaches. One of the areas hardest hit by the storm is Misquamicut Beach. Debris shut down streets. Flood water washed away walkways. Winds tore down telephone poles. In response, the Misquamicut Business Association established a relief fund to bring the beach and surrounding areas back to normal. All donations help local property owners, businesses and residents. Contributions can be made online at www.misquamicutrelieffund.com. For some southern Rhode Island

businesses, the financial damage from lost revenue far exceeds all resulting physical damage. To help these businesses stay afloat, the Greater Westerly Pawcatuck Area Chamber of Commerce created the Jump Start Small Business Recovery Fund, which provides grants to businesses financially hurt by the storm. In addition to accepting donations, the fund is selling “Bring Back the Beach” t-shirts for $15, with $12 of that going to support the business community. Head online at www.westerlychamber.org to purchase a t-shirt or make a donation. Lastly, many Rhode Island Red Cross blood drives were canceled due to Superstorm Sandy, resulting in a loss of blood and platelet products. These blood donations are extremely important for individuals all across the state, especially for those injured during the storm. People eligible to give blood are asked to schedule a donation appointment by calling 1-800-733-2767 or visiting www.redcrossblood.org. –Dale Rappaneau

CARES, a nonprofit organization that brings volunteers to local schools. The auction will be held from 4-7pm in the Narragansett Pier Ballroom at the Village Inn in Narragansett. Enjoy hors

d’oeuvres and desserts from Meadow Brook Inn. Tickets are $40 in advance or $45 at the door, and can be reserved online at www.skcares.org or by phone at 360-1304. –Devin Fahey

Scientists man the controls of underwater exploration vessels at Inner Space Center’s mission control

Under the Sea

UrI’s Inner Space Center provides a glimpse of uncharted worlds beneath the surface By Bethany Vaccaro

Imagine walking into Mission Control, a busy room filled with screens, buttons and equipment. Images of unknown terrain are projected on multiple large high-definition screens at the front of the room, and a robotic arm can be seen delicately probing at some strange lifeform. Scientists sit in front of control panels and computer screens, watching the real-time footage, intent on the data. This might seem like a scene you’d see if you visited NASA during a moon landing, but in reality it’s the Inner Space Center (ISC) at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography, where the undiscovered depths of the oceans are explored and revealed in real time to onlookers who are safe and dry on land. Ninety-five percent of the ocean floor remains unexplored. “We know very little about the deep sea, where light no longer penetrates,” says Dwight Coleman, director of the ISC. “And it’s on our very own planet.” Much like scientists who explore outer space, the scientists that work with the

ISC are driven by the urge to explore the unknown depths and share their discoveries with the world. The ISC is a pioneer in leveraging new technologies and the connective power of the internet to facilitate col-

laboration amongst experts interested in deep sea exploration. Operational now for three years, the ISC is the vision of Bob Ballard, the oceanographer and deep sea explorer best known for discovering the Titanic in 1985. Years

ago, Ballard, who is now a professor of oceanography at URI, envisioned using telepresence to move ocean exploration to a whole new level. Today, the implementation of his vision through the ISC has revolutionized what is possible in ocean exploration. Telepresence allows someone to participate remotely in a discovery expedition in real-time. Experts can gather at Mission Control in the ISC, or link in through the internet, to observe and participate in on-going deep sea missions. Using satellite equipment on a ship and the internet capabilities on shore, an unlimited amount of people can view and participate. This innovation has resulted in limitless potential in terms of the amount of experts who can collaborate on any particular mission. Previously, direct participation in a mission was limited by the amount of people who could fit on a ship. Now, there are no such restrictions. “Why send just 20 people out when you can bring the whole world with you?” asks Coleman, adding, December 2012 | SO RHODEISLAND

not on the ship.” Plans are already in the making for the next field season. In addition to other missions, the ISC hopes to explore some active underwater volcanoes in the Caribbean, a Meso-American reef off of Belize, and the coasts of Columbia and Venezuela. In addition to ocean exploration, the ISC is committed to educating the public about the oceans and sharing the exciting discoveries it makes each year. It is involved in many educational programs, which aim to bring the general public down into the murky depths in much the same way they allow ocean experts to remain high and dry while participating in expeditions. During the field season, real-time programs were beamed from the ships to live audiences at the Mystic Aquarium. A teacher on the ship runs the presentation via the internet. This gives the audience a glimpse of the work in progress on the ship. ISC also runs live feeds of expedition on its website, allowing the public to tune in anytime to see what the scientists are up to. Also, the ISC has interactive kiosks set up at various educational sites, which compile and display information gleaned from expeditions. “We’re trying to make the public smarter about the ocean and bring them to care about the oceans,” says Coleman. Plans are in the works to expand their educational partnerships in the coming months. Start your journey towards ocean literacy by registering for the next tour of the Inner Space Center on December 4 at 10am. To learn more and to register, surf over to their website, www.innerspacecenter.org. The tour is a great opportunity to check out the various components of the ISC, which is housed at the Ocean Science and Exploration Center at URI’s Bay Campus, including Mission Control, the Studio, Production Control and the Feeds Room. Before you know it, you’ll feel like you’re under the sea and on the verge of an exciting discovery.

“This has never really been done for ocean exploration before. We are the pioneers of this.” The application of telepresence to deep sea exploration has vastly improved the potential for groundbreaking discoveries. “It’s really impossible to staff a ship with all of the experts in each area,” explains Coleman. “We compare it to the on-call doctors at a hospital. You need all kinds of experts standing by to deal with what might come up.” Now, ocean explorers can also tap into a bullpen of experts, including archaeologists, marine biologists, microbiologists, geochemists, geophysicists and maritime historians. The range of experts that can contribute to an expedition ensures that full advantage is taken of each discovery as it’s made. Currently, the Inner Space Center works with two ships, the Okeanos Explorer and E/V Nautilus. The Okeanos Explorer, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration vessel, is the only federally owned and operated ship dedicated solely to ocean exploration. It was updated and renovated specifically to support ISC activities. During the “field season,” which lasts for about two months, each ship visits a variety of locations. They might spend time exploring Greek volcanoes, looking for shipwrecks in the Black Sea, examining methane seeps or exploring an underwater canyon off the Florida coast. With so much unexplored terrain, the potential for exciting discoveries is virtually limitless. The 2011 field season was a busy one. About 50 new shipwrecks, some up to 2500 years old, were discovered in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. There was even enough time to have a look at some previously unexplored underwater volcanic systems. “Often, we might know something is there, but don’t really know anything about it,” says Coleman. “So we then do a targeted exploration into a feature like a fissure between fault systems or a cold seep. We do a comprehensive reconnaissance, which is often directed by scientists

SO RHODE ISLAND | December 2012

Small Town Charm Ring in the holidays the old-fashioned way Our Main Streets are

beautiful at any time of year, but never moreso than during the holidays. During the Wickford Festival of Lights, thousands upon thousands of tiny white lights adorn the quaint historic buildings dotting the town center. The nighttime festival kicks off on November 29 with the tree lighting in Updike Park, which sets the tone for the festivities with performances by the North Kingstown Community Youth Chorus and The Lafayette Band. On November 30, Santa arrives at the town dock aboard the Sea Princess, and then takes hayrides with families throughout the evening. A living nativity, roving carolers and live musical performances happen all night, and stores stay open until 9pm. On the weekend, the fun happens all day, starting with Breakfast with Santa on December 1. After, enjoy an Elf Parade, concerts, a Holiday Kitchen Tour and more. During this time, Smith’s Castle

Christmas at Smith’s Castle

will also be hosting Christmas at the Castle, with live music, refreshments and costumed interpreters discussing the holidays over the centuries. www. wickfordvillage.org In Westerly, Santa arrives in style on November 23 – on a firetruck, accompanied by the Winterlady, elves, reindeer, snowmen and angels, who give out free candy to good little girls and boys (and, just maybe, their doting parents). The town celebrates its Winter Festival on December 15. The all-day event features larger-than-life ice sculptures, performances by the Westerly High School Chorus and hayrides with Santa. During this time, downtown Westerly shops offer holiday gift specials and refreshments. What kind of specials? You’ll just have to peek in and see for yourself. www.westerlychamber.org When the sun goes down, it’s time for a Holiday Stroll in East Greenwich. During these evenings, stores

Santa’s arrival in Westerly

stay open late and offer shopping deals and refreshments. There are three events planned for this month: December 6, 13 and 20 – with a special evening planned on November 29 for Santa’s arrival and the town’s Christmas Tree Lighting. Each evening has a different theme, like Ladies Night or the Holiday Window Display contest. www.eastgreenwichri.com Narragansett celebrates its Festival of Lights on December 2. The all-day festival offers fun for the whole family, and does its part to help others in need. Festivities kick off at 11:30 at the Narragansett Community Center for Arts & Crafts & Pizza (admission is a canned good donation). Throughout the day, there are performances by the Narragansett Middle School and High School Choruses, holiday trolley rides, caroling at the library and festivities in Gazebo Park. Photos with Santa are

available at the Towers (in exchange for one new, unwrapped toy). A Jingle Bell Run happens on Ocean Road in the afternoon. During the festival, the Pier Marketplace offers activities like Christmas storytelling, a luminary stroll, horse-drawn wagon rides and free gelato at Nana’s Ice Cream. www.narragansettcoc.com The Ashaway Holiday Stroll is a day of festive fun on December 8, with events happening all over town. Start early with Breakfast with Santa at the Ashaway Fire Department. Then spend the day exploring: shop at craft and holiday bazaars and a book sale; enjoy a holiday house tour; write a letter to Santa; take a horse-drawn wagon ride or participate in the community carol sing at the Ashaway Free Library. As night falls, a roast pork dinner, living nativity, luminaria stroll and fireworks cap off the festivities. 364-7052

An Artful Way to Shop Local Arts and artisan fairs let you have fun while you shop Charlestown Gallery is maybe the most un-stuffy gallery you’ll ever peruse. The art is accessible, beautiful and affordable. Their Holiday Group Show runs December 1-31, and features paintings, sculptures, rugs, ceramics, jewelry, photography and American crafts. An open house fair on December 8 will feature visiting artists and refreshments. 5000 South County Trail, Charlestown. 364-0120, www.charlestowngalleryri.com Talk about holiday traditions: this year, the South County Art Association is hosting its 42nd annual Holiday Pottery and Art Sale. That’s 42 years of collecting the area’s most talented creators of drawings, photography, ce-

ramics and paintings. SCAA will also offer a collection of handmade Christmas ornaments at the sale, which runs November 23-December 9. 2587 Kingstown Road, Kingston. 783-2195. www.southcountyart.org There’s no rule that says art has to be expensive to be good – in fact, the Wickford Art Association is out to prove the opposite. Their Little Picture Show, running November 25-December 19, features work from local and regional artists, all at affordable prices. 36 Beach Street, Wickford. 294-6840, www.wickfordart.org The Artists Cooperative Gallery of Westerly offers a new show every month. This year, there are two holiday

shows to enjoy. Through December 1, the “Small Treasures” holiday show offers small works that are big on artistic impact. During the month of December, the holiday arts show entitled “Art as a Gift” aims to change your idea of art, which isn’t just for hanging on a wall. Jewelry, pottery, even dinner plates – if it’s handmade with local love, then that’s what counts. An opening reception is scheduled for December 5, and the exhibit runs December 5-29. 7 Canal Street, Westerly. 596-2221, www.westerlyarts.com The historic Fayerweather House hosts its annual Holiday Bazaar/ Christmas in Kingston weekend on December 1-2. Handmade crafts from

local artists and artisans will be available for sale. Free coffee and cider, a Christmas caroling performance and food prepared by Portia Little from her recipe books make the event irresistible. 1859 Moorsefield Road, South Kingstown. 789-9072, www.fayerweathercraftguild.com Enjoy Winter’s Eve at the Library, an evening of art and music at the East Greenwich Free Library. On December 6, browse and shop from a juried art exhibit, and then enjoy a holiday concert. The winner of the art contest will have his or her own solo show at the library in 2013. 82 Peirce Street, East Greenwich. 884-9510, www.eastgreenwichlibrary.org

Be Merry & Bright Get in the spirit at these holiday performances

It might be a bit of a drive, but it’s worth it to see Erika Van Pelt perform live. Our own American Idol finalist – along with Idol alums John Stevens and Jen Hirsch, and jazz vocalist Laura Brunner – is performing with the Beantown Swing Orchestra on December 9 at The Vets in Providence. The lively 18-piece big band will also have a special string section for this festive holiday concert. 1 Avenue of the Arts, Providence. 421ARTS, www.vmari.com The Nutcracker is a holiday mustsee for any kid (or kid at heart). The Island Moving Company stages things a little differently, though, by performing it inside a Newport mansion. The Nutcracker at Rosecliff combines the beauty of this beloved ballet with the period-appropriate architectural beauty of one of the City by the Sea’s most stunning spaces. Performances through November 30. 548 Bellevue Avenue, Newport. 8474470, www.islandmovingco.org

Contemporary Theater’s GIft of the Magi

You can always count on the Contemporary Theater Company for an entertaining show. This season, CTC presents The Gift of the Magi, the O. Henry tale of what’s truly important at the holidays. The show is being performed through December 1 at CTC’s space in Wakefield, and then throughout December at the Towers in Narragansett. 327 Main Street, Wakefield. 218-0282, www.thecontemporarytheater.com You’ve seen the movie, but It’s a Wonderful Life: A live radio play is a whole new experience. The beloved show takes on a whole new spirit in this fast-paced, creatively staged production that’s done as a 1940s radio broadcast. The Renaissance City Theatre of the Granite Theatre performs the show through December 23. 1 Granite Street, Westerly. 5962341, www.granitetheatre.com Join the Jamestown Community Chorus for A Celebration of Carols. This year, their annual holiday concert

Christmas Pops by the Chorus of Westerly

features Britten’s “A Ceremony of Carols” and a special guest: Hyunjung Choi, principal harpist for the Rhode Island Philharmonic, who has performed with Andrea Bocelli and on Broadway. December 8-9. Central Baptist Church, 99 Narragansett Avenue, Jamestown. 423-1574, www. jamestownchorus.wordpress.com It isn’t the holiday season in Rhode Island without A Christmas Carol by Trinity Repertory Company in Providence. The beloved annual tradition is now in its third decade, but every year, the show is different. This season, see Timothy Crowe as Scrooge, and two different children’s casts. 201 Washington Street, Providence. 3514242, www.trinityrep.com Tap your feet to the Christmas Pops by the Chorus of Westerly.

On December 16, enjoy two performances, conducted by Andrew Howell. This year’s selections include swinging Christmas carols, paired with some beautiful classical pieces, like selections from The Nutcracker. 119 High Street, Westerly. 596-8663, www.chorusofwesterly.org To experience some family-friendly holiday theatrics, take the little ones to the Contemporary Theater Company’s Family Holiday Spectacular. Every Saturday morning from November 24-December 22, bring the family to Wakefield for an interactive show that involves carols, a “snacktivity” by the Goddard School and “a tale of five Santas,” which, hopefully, involves five times the gifts. 327 Main Street, Wakefield. 218-0282, www. thecontemporarytheater.com

“ I’M GRATEFUL TO THE STAFF AT SOUTH COUNTY HOSPITAL’S EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT.

THEY SAVED MY LIFE.”

Joseph Murphy, Narragansett

The pain started in Joseph Murphy’s side and became more acute the next morning. He didn’t have a primary care physician, so he drove right to the Emergency Department for treatment. “I was in agony,” Joseph remembers. It turns out he had a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm – a life-threatening medical emergency that can be difficult to diagnose yet requires immediate attention. Fortunately, Dr. David Coppe had the expertise to identify the problem and the skill to perform the delicate surgery. “I’m grateful to the staff at South County Hospital’s Emergency Department,” Joseph says. “They saved my life. I’m one lucky guy.” South County Hospital’s Emergency Department offers board-certified emergency medicine physicians, the latest diagnostics technology, and prompt, considerate care. I was in desperate need of a manicure. It had been a few months since my last one, and I was attending a fancy wedding that weekend. Now, I’m not one to get my nails done regularly. As much as I love the look of freshly painted fingernails, I just can’t seem to keep them from chipping. Maybe it’s the constant typing I do at my job or the fact that I am about as graceful as a horse in heels. Needless to day, I usually ruin a paint job within 24 hours. I had already invested in a great cocktail dress, shoes and a day-of hair appointment for the wedding, and the last piece of the beauty puzzle was a manicure. I was intrigued by the 3-D manicure offered at Sara’s Glam Squad Salon in Westerly, so I made an appointment with owner Sara Faella a few days before the event. An extra dimension had to be a good thing, right? As soon as I entered the space, a bubbly Sara greeted me. She explained how the manicure worked and looked – it’s basically a solid base coat color of your choice with tiny crystallized beads affixed to the wet polish. Since my dress was black and white, I went with a neutral pale pink base with matching crystals. And knowing how prone I am to manicure malfunctions, I purposely picked a foolproof lighter hue. Sitting with Sara was like hanging out with your best gal pal. She has an easy, breezy way about her that instantly puts you at ease in her chair. With a background in fashion and a penchant for making women look beautiful, Sara opened her first salon – or beauty loft as she affectionately calls them -- in 2010 in Westerly. She quickly gained a local and then a national following, securing a partnership with Rain Cosmetics, an official sponsor of the Miss USA pageants. “I touched up Olivia right before the top 16 were called,” she beamed,

describing the frenzy of this year’s pageant and RI’s own winner. “I was in tears. I was so excited for her.” Last year, she expanded with a downtown Providence space to better accommodate brides that were traveling all the way from Boston. Along with pageants and celebrity cosmetic artistry, Sara and her Glammies – Sara-speak for her staff of hair stylists and make-up artists -- are really known for impeccable bridal services. “I’ve done thousands of brides. I just love to be around the positivity that comes from their awesome day,” she said, smiling. As we chatted, she was filing and buffing my beat-up nails. Once she shaped them, she put on a clear base coat and then a coat of the colored

lacquer. Next came the fun part, sprinkling the itty-bitty beads on the wet polish. I could see why it’s also called the “caviar” manicure, as it looked like tiny pink crystallized eggs had just landed on my fingertips. It also made them look super luxurious, which is the ultimate goal at the Glam Squad. It also met my goal, lasting until my cousin’s big day. Though a few beads slipped off as expected, the bling effect remained for a week. With a variety of colors and even Swarovski crystals, it’s a fun and glitzy way to accessorize your digits for a special occasion, like a wedding or holiday party. It’s a whole new dimension of glamour. By appointment only. www. sarasglamsquad.com. December 2012 | SO RHODEISLAND

find myself scrutinizing my modest and haphazardly furnished apartment, unsatisfied with the look of a room, wondering how I could improve it. After a few minutes of silent pondering, I’ll move a lamp over there and a table over here and hmm… maybe it’s not the furniture but the Pink Floyd poster from college and pile of dirty laundry that are the giving the living room a bad vibe. I may not be a feng shui expert, but I have a good sense of when a space is comfortable and inviting — perhaps a little too comfortable in my case — and when it just needs that “extra something.” Lee Chartier, owner of Inside Style in Wakefield, shares a similar, more sophisticated philosophy on comfort, which she brings to her eclectic home furnishings and interior design store. Her idea is that home decoration and design should be affordable and enjoyable. “For a lot of people, design is intimidating,” she says, “People expect us to be more expensive, [but] I think design services should be accessible.” At Inside Style, you can find anything for the home whether it’s new, antique or gently used. “I don’t care if it’s two minutes old or two hundred years old, I like timeless pieces,” says Chartier. In addition to her store, Chartier offers interior design consultations by appointment. During a typical con-

sultation, she will work with a client in the home and give advice on ways to customize and accent a room, or the whole house, moving around furniture (with permission) and offering new ideas. Understanding the cost of home improvement projects, Chartier gives her clients the option to remodel with her assistance or without, if they prefer the D.I.Y. route. Chartier, a Wakefield native who studied art at Brown University, is also a full time faculty member at CCRI where she teaches marketing. Clearly, she knows a little bit about what she’s doing, which explains Inside Style’s frequent activity on Twitter and Facebook where she posts photos about the especially unique and beautiful pieces she finds. She says, “we get new things in every week,” so using social media makes perfect sense in a business where the inventory is as transient and unique as a thrift store and as alluring and exquisite as an art gallery. While you wouldn’t find every piece of furniture at Inside Style in Chartier’s own house, she appreciates the beauty of each item. So, how does she describe her own style? “Casual elegance. I’m really about my surroundings; I know that I’m comfortable in a place that’s beautiful.” 155 Main St., Wakefield. 783-7800. Follow her on Twitter at @InsideStyleRI

Avie’s Ski and Sport must be getting busy. What’s hot right now? We sell a lot of North Face jackets, Uggs, skis, boots, snowboard gear and cold-weather clothing. Believe me, no one keeps you warmer than a ski shop.

Photography: Laurel Mulherin

Tell us a little about the Trip Destinations you offer. We do bus trips for the day to Okemo, Loon, Mount Sunapee, Mount Snow, Killington and Stratton Mountain Resort. The bus leaves from the shop, you ski all day and then relax all the way home. Because these trips are for all ages, we show PG movies only. The cost of the trip includes the bus ride and the lift ticket, which is cheaper than the lift ticket if you drove up yourself. How does your rental system work? The ski rental is for skis, boots and poles. The snowboard rental includes a snowboard, bindings and boots. We rent on a daily basis or we do a seasonal lease program. What’s your insider tip for coldweather gear? Well, SmartWool socks and underwear are the way to go; they are warm and after a weekend of skiing they still don’t smell. Also, the North Face clothing is built to last, and the

new ski technology is the bomb.

The simple answer to the dozen of questions you have about aging is CALL ME

What type of clothing items do you sell for someone who may not be a skier or snowboarder? We sell lots of clothing for none skiers such as hats, gloves, socks, under garments, fleece, scarves and Uggs. How did you get started? I worked for Alpine Ski Sports for 27 years. In 2000, after Alpine closed, I re-opened my store in Westerly and named it after my father. I have been skiing since I was five years old and had gotten into ski racing. I went to college for athletic training and business, so owning a sport shop was great. I also sell SCUBA and tennis gear in the summer. Skiing or snowboarding: which one do you prefer? I am a skier, but people who snowboard really enjoy it. With my retail space, I gave customers a choice. Any skiing/snowboarding plans of your own for the winter? I will do as many day trips as I can with the store, and will probably head out to Salt Lake City, UT again with some friends for a week. Ted owns Avie’s Ski and Sports. 100 Main Street, Westerly. 596-0375

This Narrow River home emphasizes bringing natural influences inside

Chapter Two One couple trades their bustling life for a simpler pace

Photography: Melissa Stimpson

Ask most folks in

the Middlebridge neighborhood of South Kingstown how they came to nest in the tightly knit community on the banks of the Narrow River, and there’s usually a sentimental story they’ll be more than delighted to share. Mark and Rose Gillooly each have treasured childhood memories of spending summers in the picturesque locale. After swapping stories when they first met, the two soon learned they shared the same beach as children. With a mutual affection for Middlebridge, it’s no wonder it is the place the couple chose to start a new chapter of their lives. “[This area] has brought so much joy,” Rose says. “I grew up on the river. I used to do the dishes and look out the window from my parents house. I always said, ‘If that house ever comes for sale, I’d like to buy it’,” Mark says about the riverfront digs that he calls home today. “I

always imagined the potential.” When the original home came on the market just over 10 years ago, Mark and Rose acted quickly. It was the opportunity to finally realize the potential Mark saw in the land, so the couple didn’t exactly get attached to the tiny cottage. “Let me put it this way: we bought the house and never walked inside it,” laughs Mark. Rose concurs, “It was like, just knock it down.” The location was just as ideal as the timing. “We decided it was time to empty nest,” says Rose. The couple lived in Barrington for 20 years, but the place the two summered their entire married life with their daughter came calling. They turned to architect Laura Krekorian of nearby Wakefield to design a warm and welcoming home that made smart use of limited space and capitalized on the tranquil water views. “We knew it was a small lot,” explains Rose. “We wanted to maximize a small

space. It’s a narrow footprint, and that’s one of the reasons we hired an architect.” In fact, it took a small village to fashion a home that brought Mark and Rose’s wants and needs to life. Builder GW Construction of Charlestown, Ernie George of Coastal Engineering in Wakefield, Michael Tetit from Grid Electric in East Providence, landscape architect John C. Cater and Company of Narragansett and carpenter Bruce Powell from A.B. Powell Woodworks of Pawcatuck, Connecticut were just some of the key players that made the house by the river an equally functional and fabulous abode. “It’s our second home, so we thought a lot about the things we wanted that we didn’t have the first time around,” notes Rose. Downsizing from a traditional Colonial, Mark and Rose looked to the pros to help merge traditional rooms into modern, cohesive, multi-functional spaces. The kitchen/dining room

hybrid that carpenter Bruce Powell helped interconnect with exquisite wood detailing includes a sunlit area ideally suited to fit the dining table that seats 10 to 12. An oversized, movable island makes a natural gathering place and comes in especially handy when the couple entertains. “This is a custom kitchen,” says Mark. “We went to a kitchen cabinet place and when we looked at the design, there was a bunch of fillers, but we needed space, and knowing this was going to be a living/dining kitchen area, we wanted a more formal look and I think to a degree we accomplished it.” When it came to the aesthetic, Rose was in the driver’s seat. “We wanted to bring outside colors in,” she says, pointing to the honey yellow walls and candlelight-toned cabinetry. “I wanted something bright and cheerful.” The kitchen flows into the living room, where a wall of tall windows alDecember 2012 | SO RHODEISLAND

lows for an uninterrupted panorama of the Narrow River. “We tried to make it somewhat of a formal look while trying to blend in with nature,” explains Mark. A custom sisal rug traces the perimeter of the room, including the rounded wall where a plush settee the color of beach dunes welcomes guests to sit and unwind. “It’s very calming,” observes Rose, taking in the entirety of the room. “Function” is a theme throughout the home, exemplified in myriad spaces including in the living room’s wet bar nestled into an out-ofthe-way wall. “We created a wet bar scenario, but you can see it blends from one room into the other room without clashing,” says Mark, referring to the kitchen. “We do a lot of entertaining. I use this area quite a bit and it works out well because I can mix drinks and still be part of the conversation.” Entertaining is made simple when so many close friends — some they’ve had for decades, live nearby. “We have about 10 couples we get together with on a regular basis. It’s just nice,” says Rose. “And a lot of their parents summered

and then retired in this area, so now the pattern repeats itself.” Vessels of colorful sea glass are found on the way to the second floor and throughout the house, each piece plucked from the shoreline by Rose who describes herself as an avid collector. “I love it. I pick each piece by hand,” she says. Both admirers of antiques, pieces can be found throughout the home, including the guest bedroom where a piece Rose bought the first year of the marriage stands. It’s the room favored by their daughter who now lives in Chicago but adores the Middlebridge home. “She loves it here,” says Mark, and Rose has a feeling why. “The water brings her back,” she explains, “to the memories that she’s had on the beach with the extended family.” It’s a sentiment that can be said for everyone who calls this extraordinary place home.

Long Awaited Cuisine An Italian eatery moves from Federal Hill to Westerly

Photography: Hilary Block

Trattoria Longo is new to Westerly, but I was a big fan of its original incarnation as Café Longo on Federal Hill in Providence, so I was eager to check out its new location. Chef-owner Jerry Longo is a resident of Westerly. After two years of commuting to Providence on a daily basis, he made the decision to bring it all home. His new Trattoria Longo is in the Canal Street place formerly occupied by Bruna’s Table. What sets a Longo restaurant apart from every other Italian restaurant in Rhode Island is that Jerry Longo and his family are from the Philadelphia/ New Jersey area – a very different vibe from anything on Federal Hill, the Little Italy section of Providence. Jerry’s sister Carmela took really good care of us the night we were there, and her distinct Philly accent added to the experience. A parking lot to the rear of the building provides plenty of free space, and you can enter from the rear although you’ll have to make your way through the dining area to get to the hostess station at the front of the restaurant. We had heard that this new spot was doing well, busy from the get go. It being a Saturday, we wisely showed up at 5pm, exactly when the trattoria opens for dinner. We were seated at a table for two that gave us a close-up view of the busy bar and a large flatscreen television where The Godfather movie was playing without the sound. Instead, music filled the air – of course, it was Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra crooning songs from the oh-so-cool 1960s. Within an hour, every table and every seat at the long bar were taken.

Antipasto

This is how it was at Café Longo on Federal Hill so we felt right at home. The menu, too, was very familiar. Most of the food on the menu is what the Longos grew up on. Their mother can often be found in the restaurant’s kitchen, making her amazing meatballs. I can’t imagine going there and not having one of those tender orbs of meat wallowing in a perfect Sunday gravy, just like my Italian grandmother used to make. The Meatball Salad ($6.50) is served on an oblong platter with the meatball on one side of the dish and the basic Longo salad on the other side of the dish. The salad was Romaine lettuce with baby grape tomatoes, cucumbers, and black olives in an extra virgin olive oil and red wine vinegar dressing. Another excellent appetizer is the Antipasta ($8.50), a larger platter covered with slices of buffalo mozzarella and ripe tomato, imported olives, generous chunks of Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese drizzled with aged balsamic vinegar, and Italian meats sliced so thin, you could almost see through them. The menu is the epitome of simplicity with six pasta dishes, two fish dishes, and six classic Italian dishes that can be prepared with either chicken or veal. Some might complain that the menu is too simplistic, but there are plenty of nightly specials that round out the offerings. I’d much rather see a restaurant do a dozen dishes to perfection over one with a twelve-page menu. There are no accompaniments to the entrees, so you can either order a pasta or one of the side dishes (sautéed rabe or spinach, both prepared with olive oil,

Chicken Cutlet and Rabe

garlic and crushed red pepper). We elected to share a penne pasta dish, the decadent Alfredo ($12.50), really just to do something different. At home and in restaurants, we always have a marinara sauce or perhaps a pink vodka sauce. Longo’s alfredo sauce is one of the best I’ve ever had, not soupy or gloppy or overly salted as so often happens in other restaurants. This was perfection on a plate, the kind of creamy pasta that you just keep on eating purely for the taste. My order of Salmon ($18) was placed before me just as my dining companion’s Veal Parmigiana ($18) arrived. In addition to Carmela, other members of the wait staff tended to our every need in a very friendly, but not obtrusive fashion. At one point, my cloth napkin slipped off my lap onto the floor. One of the servers quickly picked it up and brought me a fresh napkin – much appreciated. Simply said, the salmon was superb. At first, I thought it was a rather small serving, but as I ate bite after bite of that pan-seared fish coated with a velvety white wine sauce, I was totally satisfied. The delicate salmon was topped with tender artichoke hearts, briny capers, and sun-dried tomatoes, which added to the buttery richness of this dish. I was lucky to get a bite of the “veal parm,” as we say here in Rhode Island. The tender veal cutlets were topped with a true pomodoro sauce and melted mozzarella, then garnished with fresh basil. The mild cheese was stringy in that wonderful way, dripping down the sides of the fork.

The pasta sat in the middle of our table, and it was culinary bliss as we had a bite of veal, a bite of salmon, and then a bite of the penne coated with just the right amount of alfredo sauce. With a glass of white wine in my hand, it was one of those “life is good” moments. With The Godfather playing just a few feet from our table, what else could I have for dessert but the Cannoli ($6)? Delicious? Yes, but pricey for what was served – one small, crispy tube of delicate fried pastry not even half filled with a sweet pastry cream. You could see the filling on the open ends of the pastry shell, but there was little to be found inside. A minor let down after such a terrific dinner. But Carmela more than made up for this when she brought us complimentary glasses of peach-cello, similar to limoncello but made with peaches – and made by Carmela! It was excellent. It’s good to see the Longo style of Italian food and hospitality alive and well in Westerly. Linda Beaulieu is the author of The Providence and Rhode Island Cookbook, available at stores throughout the state.

Francesca and Gina of Amalfi Oceanside

What inspired you and co-owner Gina Musto to take ownership of Amalfi Oceanside? Francesca Sarantapoulas: It was kind of on a whim. We spoke to the owner of The Village Inn Hotel and signed a contract on June 9 with the stipulation that we had to be up and running by June 15. Within six days we had found a chef, a full wait staff, full bar and created our menu. Interestingly enough, our opening day was one of our busiest days yet. Tell us about your menu. Gina Musto: It definitely has Mediterranean undertones. We both come from that background. Francesca: There is a full raw bar featuring $2 lobster claws. A favorite on our menu is the Seafood Fra Diablo, a combination of lobster, scallops, shrimp, mussels, and little necks in a spicy red sauce. We are also starting Prime Rib Fridays with queen and caveman cuts available. Sunday Brunch is available from 10am-2pm featuring a la carte options such as lobster benedict, and our build-your-own Bloody Mary and Mimosa bar. Describe Amalifi’s atmosphere. Francesca: Regardless of the time of year, you have beautiful views of Narragansett Town Beach and the Bay. Inside we have a cozy full bar where we offer new-age martinis and local draft beers. Thursdays are open mic night, Fridays offer an acoustic set, and Saturdays have fun, Motown music.

How long did it take to re-open the restaurant after Hurricane Sandy struck? Francesca: We were out of power for four days and when we did get our power back Thursday at 5pm, we had lost everything in our kitchen. By Friday at 5pm, we were completely restocked and ready to serve. We were able to do this because of the local vendors we use such as Belmont Market. How have you contributed to the relief efforts? Gina: We will be holding a Hurricane Relief Day on Sunday December 6 where 15% of all proceeds from brunch, lunch and dinner will be donated to the Red Cross. Francesca: And we have both personally donated clothes and donated to the Red Cross. What has struck you most about seeing Narragansett’s recovery? Francesca: I personally love how communities pull together. Neighbors helping neighbors by having charging stations in their homes and offering hot showers. We pull together for whatever is needed. Being a new business owner and having the challenge of struggling through our first winter compounded with the aftermath of the hurricane has been trying to say the least. A Sweet Victory A North Kingstown woman wins a big cooking competition It took almost 12 hours, but after the quiche came out of the oven and the last fritter was deep fried, the judges declared that Mary Jo Fletcher LaRocco of North Kingstown was the winner of this year’s New England Dairy Cook-Off, sponsored by HP Hood. The winning recipe was for her Cranberry Limoncello Tarts in a Gingersnap Hazelnut Crust. This was the fourth year that the dairy giant conducted this cook-off and the first time it was held in Providence, at the Rhode Island Convention Center. Mary Jo has competed in every year of the competition, doing well but never winning the grand prize of $10,000 until this year. The cook-off began at 7:30 on a Sunday morning, with 30 semifinalists competing in their respective categories: breakfast/brunch; soups/ chowders; appetizers/side dishes; lunch/dinner; and dessert. The amateur cooks had one hour to prepare and plate their dishes. By 6:30pm, the judges narrowed the field down to five finalists from across New England. The dishes that made it to the finals were a late-summer quiche, a chowder, fritters with a vichyssoise shooter, a seafood entrée, and Mary Jo’s tarts. Mary Jo said she wanted to use fall ingredients and fresh local products such as cranberries and maple syrup. On the day of the cook-off, Mary Jo admits she was both nervous and excited. All the recipes had to be original, and include at least one Hood dairy product among their ingredients. The dishes were judged on creativity and originality, presentation and appearance, and taste appeal. According to one Hood official, Mary Jo’s tarts were “a great combination of creativity and amazing presentation.” She came up with her original recipe at the last minute. “The night before the recipe deadline, I sat down and forced myself to come up with something,” Mary Jo said. “Once I knew the recipe was accepted for the cook-off, I had to get practicing it right away. So for three weeks we had a house full of lemon tarts and gave them away to anyone who walked in.” A perfectionist, Mary Jo tweaked the recipe in each batch until she felt it had the right balance of flavors. The hardest

part, she said, was getting the plating to look right. “I plated dozens of different ways and texted pictures to family and friends to get ideas,” she explained. “Everyone had a different opinion, but my husband’s eye is definitely the best, and he had the ideas that brought the final plating together.” Mary Jo lives in North Kingstown with her husband and two children, ages 4 and 10 months. With a Ph.D. in education from a joint program with Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island, she teaches English as a second language (ESL) at colleges and universities in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. She also teaches part-time at URI, helping international and graduate students improve their writing and communication skills. She said she learned how to cook out of necessity when she moved to Bosnia in 1996, and it became her hobby when she moved back to the United States. She’s lived in Rhode Island for the past 10 years. WHAT’S HAPPENING Silver Spoon Bakery has opened a storefront at 58 Main Street in East Greenwich. At best, the average

male views a woman’s handbag as a mysterious vessel out of which springs cosmetics, car keys, and occasionally useful items like breath mints. For women, of course, handbags mean so much more - fashion accessory, personal statement and an oftdescribed place where one’s “whole life” is stored. For Rhode Island designer Kent Stetson, however, making a handbag is not just a work of art, but a labor of love. Some of his unique leather and canvas bags feature his original abstract artwork, including patterns drawn from photos of french fries, bacon, Matchbox cars and even the Johnston landfill. Others contrast affectionate treatment of materials like lizard and snake skin with bright materials that highlight the natural textures in the leather. For example, one of his latest creations is a python bag that uses strips of neon coral lambskin to show off the cut of the hide. “The holes and scales look like lace in some places,” Steton says, adding: “The form emerges from the raw materials; no two bags are exactly alike. I don’t see them as merchandise as much as a way to tell a story.” Steton’s own tale began in rural New Hampshire, where he grew up on a horse farm. His mother repaired horse tack and his dad was a blacksmith, so Stetson was exposed to leather and metal work at a young age. Equally important, however, was his sister’s subscription to Vogue, especially the much-lauded September issue. “I was born with a shaker of glitter and a tube of glue in my hand,” he laughs. Stetson studied as an “artist in denial” for two years at Brown before changing his focus from pre-med and philosophy to fine arts. After graduating, he tried his hand as a visual artist as well as paying the bills with jobs in real estate and retail. About 10 years ago, he decided

to print one of his abstract works on canvas and sew it up as a handbag rather than hanging it on a wall. “I sold it to the first person I showed it to,” he recalls. “At the time, my artwork wasn’t selling, so that was a lightbulb moment.” Designing handbags allows for greater creativity than making clothing or shoes, Stetson contends. “A handbag is a good place to go out on a limb, because you can always set it down,” he says. “With clothing, it’s very loaded because you’re dealing with the body. I really feel like there are no rules with the design of a handbag. It just has to have an inside and an outside.” Stetson has dabbled in selling his bags through big retail stores, but while the potential is there (and online, too) for bigger profits, he sees such transactions as too impersonal. “Each of these bags are like friends

of mine,” he explains. “I have complex relationships with them, and I want to see them go to good homes. One of my biggest fears is that someone will purchase one of my bags and never use it, or want to return it.” Instead, Stetson sells upwards of 1,000 bags each year at fashion shows and art exhibits such as the upcoming Artcraft show at the Courthouse Center Stage (formerly the Courthouse Center for the Arts), held December 1-2 in West Kingston. Among the works of 30-odd artists in fiber, wood, leather, fine art, and gold and silver jewelry, you’ll find Stetson’s bags priced from about $45 to $400. More creative new designs will undoubtedly pop into Stetson’s head between now and then. “I dream of handbags,” he says. “I wake up every day and am genuinely excited to do this for a living.” www. kentstetson.com

Lantern Light Tours

seeing the Light December 1-27: Entering its 33rd season this year, the Lantern Light Tours at Mystic Seaport has become a local holiday tradition. Bringing audiences back to Christmas Eve in 1876, this year’s production centers on the legend of St. Nicholas as the Patron Saint of sailors, thieves and young women seeking marriage. Each performance is a 70-minute walking tour through the 19th century village where visitors stop at designated locations to watch the story unfold. Enjoy a tale of lost love, temptation and Christmas miracles; tours begin at 5pm and leave every 15 minutes. Group sizes are very limited, so reserve your tickets in advance. $21-30. 5-8:30pm. 860-572-5331, 75 Greenmanville Avenue, Mystic, Connecticut. www.mysticseaport.org.

SO RHODE ISLAND | December 2012

Islanders get to unwrap the gift of a new theatre. The fine folks of Ocean State Theatre Company (OSTC), former producers of Theatre by the Sea in Matunuck, open their state-ofthe-art Warwick space this month. Unlike a certain bearded gentleman, they don’t judge whether we’ve been naughty or nice this year. Instead, they offer options for both, staging the devilishly funny Santaland Diaries and angelically sweet Winter Wonderettes. And this theatre is a gift that keeps on giving, with a full line-up of great shows scheduled through the spring. “There are 409 seats and, really, not a bad seat in the house,” Producing Artistic Director Amiee Turner tells SO about OSTC’s new home on Jefferson Boulevard. At the time, the dramatic transformation of the repurposed building, previously a vacant garage, nears completion. Turner reports, “The seats are almost ready to be installed, all of the walls are put up, the stage has been laid, and the pit’s been dug, so it’s well on its way.” Turner and her team spent the last five years at Theatre by the Sea, producing large-scale summer seasons of musical theatre and comedy. They originally planned to continue there, operating their Warwick location during the months that the historic barn theatre closed. But, since owner Bill Hanney has decided to take over the production end of Theatre by the Sea next season, he and OSTC have parted ways. Turner takes a positive stance on the change of plans, noting,

“Everyone is focused on this new tradition that we can start here in RI.” That said, she adds, “It’s always going to feel a little bittersweet.” Remaining on the bright side, Turner hopes that the central location of the Warwick theatre will translate to better accessibility and the potential to reach broader audiences. She also expects some of the challenges and limitations the group faced when mounting plays in a barn to be eliminated in this new, more conventional theatre space. Plus, she enthuses, “The staff has been unbelievable. They’ve been splitting their time between packing up the Theatre by the Sea property, building the sets for the winter shows, and also helping to facilitate a great deal of the construction.” OSTC kicks off December with a finger-snapping musical revue, The Winter Wonderettes by Roger Bean. Similar in format to the popular Forever Plaid, recently staged at Theatre by the Sea, the show features a quartet of fun gals who sing in sweet four-part harmony as the entertainment for their company’s party. Though set in 1968, the music spans decades, from traditional “O Tannenbaum” to retro “Santa Baby,” swinging “Jingle Bell Rock,” and contemporary “This Christmas.” While Wonderettes celebrates the spirit of the season, The Santaland Diaries gets giggles out of Grinches everywhere. The oneman show, based on a clever essay by humorist David Sedaris, stars Lennie Watts as a disgruntled — and hilarious — Macy’s Christmas elf. “We thought it would be fun to do

something eye-catching but also to give people a whole range of different things they could see. That’s why we went with the ‘naughty and nice’ [theme],” Turner explains. “It’s not too nice and it’s not too naughty, but there’s really something for everybody.” Following the winter shows, the notfor-profit OSTC plans an ambitious schedule. Neil Simon’s funny Fools opens in January, Jonathan Larson’s rock opera Rent in February, David Mamet’s provocative Race in March, and Rodgers & Hammerstein classic The King and I in April. As far as casting goes, Turner notes, “We have chosen to use folks that have been with us since our inception, so there will be a lot of familiar faces on stage.” With professional talent, passion, and a new home in Warwick, OSTC brings tidings of good drama to Rhode Island audiences.

Minty Fresh Nothing quite says holiday cheer like the fresh, sweet bite of mint. It just tastes like December. This month, we tested peppermint treats, with some

Updike’s Newtowne

delicious results. They just might be the perfect end to any holiday meal.

If you want something you could drink every day this holiday season, warm yourself up with Updike’s Mint Mocha, complete with whipped cream, chocolate drizzle and a fresh mint leaf from Wickford Gardens. It was a unanimous delight: with its ability to retain its separate flavors of coffee, chocolate and mint, yet not be overly sweet, this was clearly a case of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. 4820 Old Post Road, Charlestown. 7726 Post Road, North Kingstown. 295-5300, www.updikesnewtone.com

Sweenors Chocolates The mint lovers among us “want our toes to curl” when we eat mint, and that is exactly what happened upon biting into this peppermint patty. This was the ultimate in dark chocolate covered mints. From the thickness of the shell to the texture of the filling, this mint took the cake. 21 Charles Street, Wakefield. 7834433, www.sweenorschocolates.com.

Good things come in small packages, and this Peppermint Leaf was no exception. While we all admired the obvious quality and thickness of the dark chocolate shell, the crazed mint lovers among us could have used a stronger mint flavor, while those of us who prefer a subtler mint enjoyed this the most. 160 Old Tower Road, Wakefield. 783-8423, www.jenschocolates.com.

Sweet Twist We loved this chocolate-covered Oreo dotted with candy cane pieces. Although the cookies could have packed a mintier punch, the treats are a feast for the eyes and the senses. 5707 Post Road, East Greenwich, 885-7579, www.sweettwist.com.
