SILVER LININGS Westerly’s Tracey Cugno revolutionizes travel accessories Tracey Cugno knows a thing or two about consumer behavior. She had retail shops in T.F. Green as well as Connecticut’s Bradley Airport for a combined 15 years, and spent much of that time talking to seasoned travelers about their packing methodology. She learned the tips and tricks they use to maximize efficiency, from breezing through TSA security checkpoints to the art of tucking your carry-on into those remarkably small overhead bins. She also learned about their wants and needs that weren’t being met – and saw a market opportunity. “That’s how I got into luggage and luggage design,” explains Cugno, who has also owned Shades and Pier Optical, a sunglasses shop in Narragansett, since 2007. “I had a front row seat with thousands of people walking by me every day. I got to see how they picked their bags up, how they carried them, who looked like they were happy carrying their bag and who didn’t.” She interviewed thousands of passengers and then took two years to plan, test, and ultimately launch the LEIGH line of innovative luggage and travel accessories. In early 2020, LEIGH had a twomonth pop-up shop in Providence that Cugno functionally used to dip her toe in the marketplace. She garnered invaluable consumer insights before the COVID lockdown, and last June, opened the LEIGH flagship on Newport’s Thames Street in a designer collaboration with Azzul, a collection of men and women’s footwear handmade in Portugal. By Andrea E. McHugh

LEIGH’s product line is meticulously curated and edited: It’s quality not quantity, and the aesthetic is simple, chic, smart, and understated. There’s a backpack that comes in two different sizes and the signature LEIGH ShoeBag, which comes with a simple “S” clip so you can attach it to the travel bag. There’s a modern duffle that fits multiple pairs of shoes in custom compartments, plus an expansive separate space for clothing and designated padded laptop section with pockets for cords. Then there’s

14

SO Rhode Island Summer • July 2021

the piece de resistance, the Resort ShoeCase, which features a packing system that would make Carrie Bradshaw swoon. With hints of a vintage travel case but thoroughly modern, the Resort ShoeCase can fit up to six pairs of shoes and contains movable dividers to accommodate different shapes and sizes of footwear. Most impressively – and importantly – is that all LEIGH bags include an exclusive antimicrobial silver lining, called Ionic+™ Antimicrobial/Anti-Odor Silver Tech, that

prevents bacteria and odor for the accessory’s lifetime. “I just wanted to provide ease, comfort, and a solution,” says Cugno, who lives in Westerly where the LEIGH warehouse is located. Now in business for two years, she is proud to say that she has not had a single return. And as travel slowly ramps up to pre-pandemic popularity, you’ll likely be seeing more of LEIGH – pieces of our small state jet-setting their way around the world. Shop-LEIGH.com

Live Music Returns If there’s a theme to the 2021 summer music season, it’s “Get Outside” Big Kenny of BIG & RICH performing at Country Fest at Ballard’s

As indoor theaters and music venues continue to make post-pandemic plans, outdoor sites around the state are ramping up for live music this summer. Of course, given continued restrictions, it’s not exactly zero to 60. But after more than a year without live music, concerts ranging from large festivals to local pop-up shows have returned. PICNIC THURSDAYS Enjoy bands on an outdoor stage at this year’s Concerts Under the Elms series in Providence hosted by the RI Historical Society. Pre-order picnic boxes of charcuterie and bevvies to enjoy with live tunes. Guests are welcome to bring their own chairs and coolers. Registration is limited and required. RIHS.org/buy-tickets

FESTIVAL FUN The state’s premium festivals – Newport Folk and Jazz – are returning to Fort Adams State Park under a modified format. The Folk Festival (July 23-28) will be spread over six days (instead of the usual three), with smaller crowds and COVID health and wellness practices in effect. Organizers are essentially running a pair of mini-fests, described as “two unique three-day events of surprise performances, storytelling, and workshops.” The Jazz Festival is scheduled to run from July 30 to August 1 and feature “three intimate days of amazing Jazz performances and surprise collaborations.” Expect crowds to be smaller at both events. NewportFolk.org, NewportJazz.org GLOBAL SOUNDS FirstWorks Live returns with music on the lawn at Roger Williams Park. Genres ranging from global jazz to Americana and hip hop will take the outdoor stage throughout the

First-Works.org MUSIC IN THE PARK At Bold Point Park in East Providence, general manager Katie Spaziano is looking forward to welcoming patrons back to the outdoor venue along Narragansett Bay. “We are very excited to be getting back to live entertainment and we know that many Rhode Islanders have been patiently waiting for us to re-open,” she remarks. A season highlight will certainly be country duo Brothers Osborne on August 1. Spaziano explains that more

shows will be added. “We are hard at work putting together the upcoming season and ensuring we are following local operating guidelines.” A late summer favorite, the Rhode Island Folk Festival (formerly Providence Folk Festival) returns this year after a pandemic hiatus in 2020. The free event takes place on Sunday, August 29 at Larissa Park in Rumford. In Coastal South County, Fire Districts Fight Shoreline Access Instead of Fires Rhode Island boasts of its nearly 400 miles of shoreline, yet the state’s eight public saltwater beaches border less than seven miles of that waterfront. Much of the remaining land along the shore is privately owned. The public has the legal right to the coastal waterfront, but wealthy shoreline communities are getting more exclusive. Special fire districts— which sometimes don’t even fight fires at all—are a big factor in the growing tensions over shoreline access.

18

SO Rhode Island Summer • July 2021

The view towards Charlestown on the Quonochontaug Barrier Beach. never seen anything like the Weekapaug Fire District, which also has the legal authority to raise taxes for public services. “This is very unusual to me: fire districts owning access to the ocean, essentially, and limiting it to their own taxing body, not to the general public,” he said. “The Weekapaug Fire District is a district mislabeled in name. They are a land entity.” Weekapaug isn’t alone. Seven coastal fire districts in Westerly, Charlestown, and Narragansett claim ownership over nearly 400 acres of property their towns have assessed at more than $18 million, and public records show acquisitions have continued in recent years. Only two of the districts, Misquamicut and Watch Hill in Westerly, have fire departments. But the fire districts weren’t originally intended to be land entities. The legislature created them earlier in the 20th Century to provide fire protection services to outlying areas. “Fire districts exist for the purpose of, obviously, providing fire services to the people who live in that district,” said state Sen. Dennis Algiere, who serves Westerly and part of Charlestown. “They’re entities that were established that provide services to a community, and they do provide fire services through contracts.” Not always. The Bonnet Shores Fire District in Narragansett, for example, describes itself on its website as “an exclusive residential village.” Here’s how fire districts evolved: Over the decades coastal districts individually asked the legislature for more powers, and they got them. The legislature gave Weekapaug permission to acquire land, Watch Hill the ability

to operate a business, and Bonnet Shores the authority to have a so-called “private beach” and land trust with tax benefits. “Why they own the property, I do not know,” Algiere said. “That’s before my time. They probably own the property well before—you know, probably mid-1900s, 1960s, 1950s in some cases.” Central to the tensions today over shoreline access is the question of why a quasi-governmental entity is allowed to block the public from the shore. Afterall, the state Constitution says the shoreline itself is public, and case law has defined that as anywhere below the mean high tide line. “Beaches are public land. This has been well established both in Rhode Island and other coastal states,” said Andrew Kahrl, a professor at the University of Virginia and an expert on shoreline access. Kahrl added, “But then the question becomes: How does the public actually gain access to these areas? And here you find towns and communities and individual homeowners searching high and low, and oftentimes utilizing their own political influence and access to clever legal representation and advice, to find different ways to limit the ability of the general public to access these areas.” And that’s why advocates like Ben Weber get so angry about losing rights of way and say public officials too often side with the fire districts and other coastal landowners. “Stuff like this happens, where rights of way were opened up, and then all of a sudden, they’re fenced off, blocked off,” Weber said, SORhodeIsland.com

The southern Rhode Island coastline is one of the most picturesque stretches of waterfront in the state, but unless you own property or are staying in a resort, it’s often hard—and in some cases nearly impossible—to get to. Earlier this year, Ben Weber and I met in one of those spots: a parking area at the start of the barrier beach east of Weekapaug Point in Westerly. We were feet from the boardwalk down to the beach sand and waves of the Atlantic Ocean, right in the heart of the Weekapaug Fire District. But we didn’t find any fire trucks stationed nearby. “There are none,” Weber said. “There are no fire trucks. They don’t have fire equipment. Now, they call themselves a fire district. But, again: no fire equipment, no apparatus, no trucks, no nothing.” The fire district does, however, own more than 60 acres of coastal property, including this boardwalk. The district allows beach access through the path for its residents, their guests, and people staying at the upscale Weekapaug Inn nearby. But it can restrict the general public, which, beachgoers say, it began doing more aggressively last year, pointing to the pandemic as justification. “They just decided they didn’t want to let anybody use that one,” Weber said. “That is their right of way. That is their land. They stood their ground and said no because of COVID: ‘Now we’re not letting anybody but our own people use it.’ So the public’s not allowed to use the lands that they’ve always used.” The boardwalk is not the only spot where the Weekapaug Fire District is calling the shots. Weekapaug has claimed ownership over a contested stretch of land nearby that Weber and other locals say is really a public right of way. The district also controls much of the barrier beach, a separate beach near the Weekapaug Breachway, and other properties. In effect, it has a near monopoly on the undeveloped land along this stretch of coast. “Weekapaug is like a medieval fortress where they draw up the drawbridge, and if you’re not a member, you don’t get in,” said Mark Rooney, the Westerly town manager. Before moving to Rhode Island from Illinois to take his current job, Rooney said, he’d

during our interview in Weekapaug. “I mean, it’s been happening for decades here, and it happens all over the place.” Westerly Town Council president Sharon Ahern said fire districts have “been the elephant in the room for a long time in Westerly.” She added, “There’s a lot of resentment, and I completely understand it.” Ahern said fire districts should open more coastal areas to the public, but the town itself has limited options to intervene. “People have to understand that those fire districts do have rights, and they do own property,” Ahern said. “Because they’re quasi governmental, it isn’t as if the town council can necessarily override what they’ve established.” But the town council has had the opportunity to do more. Last year, council members sided with the Weekapaug Fire District on the contested right of way locals say is public, despite questions about the property’s history. After complaints, they passed the case along to the state Coastal Resources Management Council, which is reviewing it now. The CRMC did not agree to an interview. The Weekapaug Fire District had no comment on this story. After repeated requests for interviews, state Sen. Dennis Algiere did have this to say on contested rights of way: “I would rather have the parties work together and come up with some type of an agreement. And right now it’s not on my priority list to go after fire districts in the State of Rhode Island that are not providing direct fire services.” Advocates complain the fire districts, with their growing hold over coastal property, aren’t on anybody’s priority list. And taking on the fire districts would be challenging, even if lawmakers wanted to. The legislature may have started them, but they’re all independent—like little towns or villages—and any amendments to their charters could be legally challenged. Even so, in a tiny state with one of the highest population densities in the country, the question of who gets to use the public’s shoreline and how they get there is getting louder among the people who just want a day at the beach. Rhody Pets:

Sea Dogs

Whether your pooch is a seasoned sailor or prepping for her maiden voyage, South County has everything you need to get ship shape!

The summer sun is luring us Ocean Staters out onto our 40 miles of coastline, and naturally we want our dogs to share in the fun. But before you get nautical in Wickford or make waves in Narragansett, check out these essential items:

SUN BLOCK Did you know that dogs are susceptible to sunburn and skin cancer? “Dogs with shaved down fur lack natural protection, as do those with thin or short coats and light coloring,” explains Fetch RI owner Johnna Devereaux. The solution? A Solis UV Cover Up – basically the canine equivalent of a rash guard. Or, if your dog is more fashion-forward than sporty, you can opt for a dapper yacht-motif shirt from The Worthy Dog brand. Richmond, FetchRI.com

20

SO Rhode Island Summer • July 2021

ONBOARD BITES For sea-faring snacks, Devereaux recommends The Honest Kitchen’s protein-packed Ocean Chews, made from wolffish, aka sea wolves. Just make sure your dog has access to plenty of fresh water: “Too much salt water can disrupt the fluid balance in a dog’s body, which can be fatal,” Devereaux cautions. Richmond, FetchRI.com BONE VOYAGE With safety and snacks covered, it’s now toy time. Nothing says Rhode Island more than a plush lighthouse. Get yours, along with a pirate squid squeaker, at Pet Supplies Plus in Narragansett. They also stock a wide range of more economical life jackets by Outward Hound. PetSuppliesPlus.com

Over at Critter Hut in Wakefield, you can find Tall Tails lifesaver rings and Kong’s resilient fishshaped Wubba Finz. Meanwhile, South County dogs are giving two webbed paws up to the unique rubber seal toys which bob upright in the water, available at Fetch RI. CritterHutRI.com Finally, don’t forget to pick up a waterproof collar light, just in case you find yourself sailing into the sunset! SPONSORED BY

GOOD BUOY First port of call, life jacket shopping at The Kayak Centre. Manager Rachel McCarty explains that even strong swimmers tire. “Plus, it’s far easier to haul a dog out of the water using the sturdy handle than it is to grapple with wet, slippery fur, especially if the dog is panicking.” McCarty stocks performance dog gear from RuffWear, and recommends bringing your dog into the shop for a fitting. “Avoid under-belly floats if your dog has short legs as they tend to tip them upside-down – the opposite of the safety goal.” Wickford, KayakCentre.com

CHARLESTOWN A nature-lover’s paradise

With its quiet, sandy beaches and curious wooded spaces, Charlestown offers some of South County’s best natural scenery. SHOP Books on the Pond (289 Narrow Ln.) is a treasure trove of books, games, toys, gifts, and more inside an adorable shingled building with a reading room and outdoor patio. Looking for a bottle of wine to enjoy back in your hotel or bring for a picnic on the beach? Choose from a wide selection, plus beer and spirits, at Charlestown Wine & Spirits (4625 Old Post Rd.). And if you forgot any travel essentials or are looking for a snack, find everything you need – from toiletries to lotto tickets to fresh produce – at Charlestown Mini Super (4071 Old Post Rd.).

Contrary to its name, the Fantastic Umbrella Factory (4820 Old Post Rd.) does not make or even sell umbrellas. This whimsical destination defies description, but is a great place to spend a few hours. Since 1968, the 19th century farmyard has been a sort of artist collective and international bazaar where you’ll find everything from penny candy to local art. The expansive property, reopened with restrictions, is filled with flowers, sculptures, and places to sit and take everything in. The Umbrella Factory Gardens is an on-site greenhouse that sells unique plants and florals. There’s a bamboo maze and a barnyard filled with emus, goats, and chickens.

DINE After you’ve explored the Umbrella Factory, head on over to The Breachway Grill (1 Charlestown Beach Rd.), which offers a

huge menu – pizza, burgers, steaks, and day-fresh seafood in a casual patio environment, plus Vintage Cigar Club & Lounge on the upstairs deck. Gemelli’s Bistro (2 Falcone Ln.) also offers prepared food and Italian cuisine through a uniquely convenient drive thru. The Cove (3963 Old Post Rd.) is a family-friendly restaurant with a huge menu filled with pasta, seafood specialities, burgers, and more. The Nordic (178 Nordic Trl.) is a lakeside restaurant known for bringing in customers by the busload, literally, to get a taste of their legendary seafood; they’re currently open for outdoor seating with a reservation. Dave’s Coffee (5193 Old Post Rd.) serves their own roasted blends in their cafe, and also sells its beans by the bag. The gourmet shop also makes and sells its own coffee syrup – used for making Little Rhody’s official state drink – coffee milk!

which has been around since 1917 and is a goto destination for johnnycakes, the iconic food made from cornmeal ground at Kenyon’s Grist Mill in Kingston.

EXPLORE Until 1854, East Greenwich was one of five state capitals in Rhode Island, one for each county. The seat of the legislature rotated among them. It also claims to be the birthplace of the US Navy, as established by a 1772 General Assembly resolution. Several other towns also stake this claim, but East Greenwich is the earliest and the only one to involve specific governmental authorization.

See East Greenwich’s history for yourself at its two museums. The Varnum House Museum (57 Peirce St.) is a Georgian mansion that is a time capsule of early American life. It houses 17th-century furniture and household items. The Varnum Memorial Armory (6 Main St.) houses a military history museum, including artifacts from the Revolutionary War and weapons from World Wars I and II.

PLAY East Greenwich’s location on Greenwich Cove makes it easy for day-tripping boaters to make a stop. The East Greenwich Marina (28 Water St.) usually offers transient dock-

age by the hour or overnight and has two onsite restaurants. Finn’s Harborside (38 Water St.) has been serving fresh seafood and New England fare for over 40 years, and has live music on the weekends. Blu on the Water (20 Water St.) is the place to see and be seen in the summer in East Greenwich. Goddard Memorial State Park (1095 Ives Rd.) is an expansive green space shared by Warwick and East Greenwich. Not only is its small beach the northernmost way to enjoy Narragansett Bay, but the park has picnic and grill areas perfect for gatherings and hosts Good Eats at Goddard Food Truck Nights July 14 and August 11.

JAMESTOWN A laid-back island getaway Just a bridge away, Jamestown is Rhode Island’s hidden gem. This island has gorgeous, unspoiled nature to explore, some of the state’s best food, and a fraction of the crowds of other tourist destinations. DINE For an island with a little over 5,000 residents, Jamestown has a lot of impressive dining options. Simpatico Jamestown (13 Narragansett Ave.) serves an eclectic menu that blends classic Rhode Island foods with worldly flavors. J22 Tap and Table (22 Narragansett Ave.) is a great example of keeping things small and doing them right; the restaurant is cozy, the small menu changes often, but ingredients are local and at the peak of freshness, and everything – down to the cocktail sauce – is housemade. New to the street, Tallulah’s Taqueria (35 Narragansett Ave.) brings Providence cult-favorite counterserve tacos, nachos, and burritos, plus an outdoor patio. IslandDish Fresh Market To Go (40 Narragansett Ave.) will be a brand-new “groceraunt,” bar, and cafe. If you’re looking for something a bit more casual, Slice of Heaven (32 Narragansett Ave.

EXPLORE #1166) is a European-style bakery that serves breakfast and lunch, plus coffee, pastries, and cocktails. Recently purchased by two women from Atlanta, Village Hearth Bakery & Cafe (2 Watson Ave.) still cooks up wood-fired artisan breads and pizzas made from scratch and baked on-site in their rustic, cozy cafe. East Ferry Deli (47 Conanicus Ave.), open for breakfast and lunch daily, is known for their specialty sandwiches and sweeping waterfront views. The Narragansett Cafe (25 Narragansett Ave.), aka The Ganny, has changed ownership, but will still be hosting some of the area’s best live music during the summer. Bands range from jazz and blues to rock, and are always danceable. Find the same food staples you know and love, including a brunch menu of signature Benedict varieties, Blood Marys, and mimosas.

Beavertail State Park (Beavertail Rd.) is notably one of the most beautiful pieces of scenery in New England. The rocky coastline offers views of Newport and the Atlantic Ocean from any of its four overlooks and from the hiking trails throughout. Beavertail is also home to a lighthouse and a small aquarium with exhibits on local sea life, hours still pending at this time. Director Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums) was so taken with Beavertail that he filmed scenes from Moonrise Kingdom there. Spend an afternoon exploring, or enjoy their environmental interpretive program with guided excursions. Jamestown is only nine miles long and one mile wide, but there’s a lot of history on the island. Fort Wetherill (3 Fort Wetherill Rd.), an abandoned military fort, is a mustsee destination. Besides the fort itself,

Aunt Carrie’s Of course you can’t miss Aunt Carrie’s (1240 Ocean Rd.) and Iggy’s Doughboys and Chowder House (1151 Point Judith Rd.): two venerable seafood restaurants across the street from one another, over which many a debate over personal preference has been had by generations of Rhode Islanders. For fine dining, 1230 Ocean Bistro (1230 Ocean Rd.) has waterfront dining and a huge deck, while Chair 5 at The Break Hotel (1208 Ocean Rd.) has poolside gourmet dining and a more casual menu on its roof deck. The Coast Guard House (40 Ocean Rd.), directly next to the Narragansett Towers, has views for days. A beachwear-friendly roof deck offers casual fare, while downstairs (including a patio and some cocktail-ready Adirondack chairs) offers upscale options.

The area around Narragansett Town Beach (39 Boston Neck Rd.) is bustling with families enjoying lunch on oceanside patios, surfers fresh off the waves, and couples strolling and shopping. If you’re headed there, make sure you have cash – it’s one of Rhode Island’s only beaches that charges admission per head, instead of just charging for parking. It’s worth the few dollars, though: Surfing lessons are available all day long, and the facilities and sand are among the cleanest and best you’ll find. Within view, the Narragansett Towers (35 Ocean Rd.) might be South County’s most Instagrammed

landmark; inside find tourist info. Natural Fitness Yoga (76 Narragansett Ave.) leads early morning beach classes on Town Beach. Narrow River Kayaks (94 Middlebridge Rd.) offers rentals of kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards, as well as guided kayak tours. Warm Winds (26 Kingstown Rd.) is a surf shop that also has surf and standup paddleboard rentals and lessons. Join the fun, friendly cycling community for a spin at So Co Cycle (140 Point Judith Rd., Unit A-14), and you must take the kiddos to Adventureland (112 Point Judith Rd.) for a day of bumper boats, mini golf, go-karts, and more.

As the hub of Block Island transportation, Galilee sees the most tourist traffic; though the Block Island Ferry (304 Great Island Rd.) also sails from Newport and Fall River, MA, the busiest boats come and go from this port. Get there early to ensure good parking, and spend that extra time strolling around and shopping for souvenirs.

George’s of Galilee (250 Sand Hill Cove Rd.) and Champlin’s Seafood (256 Great Island Rd.) are so close together they share a parking lot. Champlin’s, serving traditional New England clam shack fare since the 1930s, has an attached seafood market and a second-floor restaurant where almost all of the seating is outdoors (including the Channel

Lounge where you can watch the boats go by). Founded in 1948, George’s has a walkup window for beach snacks – they also offer service to your beach chair – full restaurant, and even a tiki bar! Jimmy’s Portside Seafood Restaurant (321 Great Island Rd. #5627), a few steps down the road, serves day-caught seafood in their large dining room and outdoor patio.

EXPLORE There’s a reason you see Point Judith calamari on every restaurant’s menu in Rhode Island: It’s simply the best. The state’s freshest, most coveted seafood is brought into this port. Get it right from the source at the fishing docks, where you can pick up lobsters, squid, clams, and more.

PLAY Salty Brine State Beach, named after one of Rhode Island’s most beloved radio and TV icons, is a little patch of shore that’s great for families. Catch some fish from a custom yacht with Seven B’s (30 State St.), plus whale watch with Frances Fleet (33 State St.), both operating at limited capacity.

NORTH KINGSTOWN A charming corner of Rhode Island’s history

Besides refurbished home decor, White Elephant purveys local goods like bodycare

SHOP Driving along Post Road you’ll find the usual strip mall businesses but keep your eyes peeled for eclectic shops like Rē (7511 & 7512 Post Rd.) which specializes in antiques, art, jewelry and more. White Elephant (7535 Post Rd.), which just moved from East Greenwich, is known for giving new life to old things in the form of upcycled home decor.

DINE You won’t go hungry in North Kingstown, that’s for sure. Allie’s Donuts (3661 Quaker Ln.) is a must-stop. Famous for their delicious donuts, the bakery also makes (equally amazing) custom donut cakes. The Carriage Inn (1065 Tower Hill Rd.) offers family favorites in a historic setting, and its owners also recently opened The Frozen Cow Ice Cream Shoppe and Roy Boy’s

Clam Shack (6710 Post Rd.). It’s all about comfort food at the newly expanded Rome Point Cafe (820 Boston Neck Rd.), which serves eclectic breakfast and lunch, plus vegetarian options. Oak Hill Tavern (565 Tower Hill Rd.) is all about big portions at great prices. Upscale dining and sipping can be found at Sonoma Bistro and Wine Bar (7366 Post Rd.), and lunch gets a big city upgrade at The Provisioner New York Deli (7669 Post Rd.). New this year, North Kingstown gets a brewery: West Passage Brewing (7835 Post Rd.) pours pale ales to pair with a curated menu of good eats. For homemade ice cream, Inside Scoop (30 Ten Rod Rd.) impresses with over 64 flavors of soft-serve, nonfat yogurt, and even ice cream cakes.

EXPLORE Smith’s Castle (55 Richard Smith Dr.) is one of the oldest homes in the state, and houses 400 years of New England history. Known for hosting events and tours in period-dress, they’re continuing to monitor and re-assess the scheduling of upcoming events on a regular basis. Be sure to visit SmithsCastle.org for updates.

Never heard of Gilbert Stuart? Check your wallet. Stuart painted the portrait of George Washington that’s on the $1 bill. The Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum (815 Gilbert Stuart Rd.) is a time capsule of Rhode Island in 1750. The gorgeous scenery itself makes the place worth a visit. History and trivia buffs will enjoy a ride into Quonset Point, a small peninsula, once known for manufacturing Quonset huts. The historic area was once home to the Quonset Point Naval Air Station, the northeast’s major base during WWII and the Atlantic Seabees. Today, it’s Quonset Business Park, home to nearly 200 businesses. The Port of Davisville is a major point of entry for shipping on the East Coast, and is one of the top ten auto importers in North America.

PLAY Biomes Marine Biology Center (6640 Post Rd.) is New England’s only private marine education facility and the most hands-on aquarium in the region. With daily kids programming and a touch tank, visitors learn all about what’s living in Narragansett Bay and the Atlantic Ocean.

MATUNUCK Fresh from the ocean

Salt Marsh Pub and Raw Bar serves up seafood and pub faves

This tucked-away South Kingstown village is where you’re most likely to find locals enjoying beachfront restaurants and live entertainment all day and night.

Along Matunuck Beach Road, you’ll find just about everything you need for a breezy seaside fun. Looking for souvenirs? Head to SeaView’s Matunuck Tees (682 Matunuck Beach Rd.), part of SeaView Marketplace, a local fave for grabbing lunch – including SeaView Sandwiches – to bring to the beach. For farm-to-table goods and garden center products, stop at Carpenter’s Farm (522 Matunuck Beach Rd.). And of course, Matunuck Surf Shop (920 Matunuck Beach Rd.) is a must if you plan to hit the waves. Next door, discover the Shaun Rock Art Gallery.

DINE Matunuck Oyster Bar (629 Succotash Rd.) is on the short list of must-try restaurants, not just for its preparations of fresh, local fish, but also because owner Perry Raso raises his own Matunuck Oysters, available

80

from the always-packed raw bar, and grows his vegetables at Matunuck Vegetable Farm. Across the street, Cap’n Jack’s (706 Succotash Rd.) – along with its sister restaurant Salt Marsh Pub and Raw Bar – serves up traditional New England fare, and has an attached bakery that’s impossible to resist. Bring your own wine to Jim’s Dock (1175 Succotash Rd.), where you can pick your own lobster and eat it on picnic tables on an actual fishing dock. Daddy’s Bread (805 Moonstone Beach Rd.) is a hidden bakery where you’ll never see a baker. Choose from baked-daily loaves like Parmesan Dill Garlic, known as the “PDG” or Apple Cinnamon, leave your cash in the honor system till, and just try to make it back to your car before you tear into them. The Ocean Mist (895 Matunuck Beach Rd.) is the quintessential beach bar: great pub fare, cold beers, and easygoing patrons. By day, the O Mist is a family-friendly restaurant; by night, it’s the place to be when

you’re coming straight off the beach and need refreshment. Next door, The Pub has traditional Irish food, as well as several decks, beach access, and lots of live music; across the street is Matunuck Pizza Pie Co. (920 Matunuck Beach Rd). Looking for ice cream? The Vanilla Bean (757 Matunuck Beach Rd.) is a summer staple.

EXPLORE Trustom Pond is a great place for a walk or small hike; locals also traverse Succotash Road, despite there being no paved walkways, which is surrounded by marshes.

PLAY Matunuck is renowned as a quality spot for surfing (check for daily reports at Surfline. com). Not quite a beach day? Take the kids to Brousseau Park (208 Succotash Rd.), which has baseball and soccer fields, lighted tennis courts, a small playground, basketball court, and parking.

Bibliophiles, be sure to head to 10 Canal Street to the Savoy Bookshop & Café, an independent bookstore that feels like a trek back in time with handsome bookcases, high ceilings, and cozy reading nooks. The neighborhood bookstore was the brainchild of investor Charles “Chuck” Royce, best known for spearheading the revival of the Ocean House in nearby Watch Hill. Pro tip: Be on the lookout for fairy doors! Across the street, find Christina’s Ltd. (1 Canal St.),

a boho-style clothing boutique. Check out OMO Jewels & Gifts (95 Watch Hill Rd.) and Compass Rose (271 Post Rd.), a fine jewelry and gift boutique in Spindrift Plaza.

DINE Rivaling Providence and Newport, Westerly is a foodie’s dream town. A large Italian population has given the town its own iconic food: Soupy is a dry-cured Italian pork sausage descended from the sopressata of the area’s Calabrian heritage. Every family has its own recipe, but the sausage is available for sale at places like Dipper’s Packing Co. (55 Ledward Ave.) and Dunns Corners Market (5 Langworthy Rd.). Additionally, Westerly is home to most any restaurant that fits your taste, from farm-tobun offerings at Graze Burgers (127 Granite St.) to creative comfort food at The Shallows Kitchen + Bar (54R High St.) and Irish-American fare at Kelley’s Deli (116 Granite St. #8). Westerly has an emerging and exciting arts and entertainment scene, and it’s brimming during the summer. Granite Theatre (1 Granite St.) usually stages beloved Broadway shows, and is hard at work developing safe strategies to return

for the season. For visual arts, explore The Artists Cooperative Gallery of Westerly, which maintains a fine arts gallery in the town’s train station (14 Railroad Ave.) and typically offers a new exhibit each month, providing virtual tours in the interim.

PLAY The famed Knickerbocker Music Center (35 Railroad Ave.) is a great evening spot for live music and dancing. Vintage Cigar Lounge & Club (47 High St.) serves a full bar and over 375 varieties of cigars. Amigos Taqueria Y Tequila (2 Canal St.) is a lively spot with an impressive selection of authentic Mexican drinks. In need of a little R&R? Olympia Tea Room (74 Bay St.), even at over 100 years old, this spot continues to put a fresh spin on classic New England fare. For sweets, head to The Candy Box (14 Fort Rd.), a quintessential coastal candy shop, and Downtown Westerly’s gelato spot has its seasonal Pompelmo by the Sea (12 Fort Rd.) that’s perfect on a warm

summer day. Feeling luxurious? While staying at Ocean House (1 Bluff Ave.) can be pricey, the hotel is visitor friendly, especially the expansive Verandah Raw Bar that’s perfect for people-watching over cocktails. Restaurants range from a more casual gastropub and patio snacks to a fine dining experience and champagne garden.

EXPLORE East Beach is the little strip of white sand between Ocean House (1 Bluff Ave.) and Taylor Swift’s mansion. Parking can be a challenge, but it’s worth it. Watch Hill’s Napatree Point (Ford Rd.) is a popular spot for beachgoers, and it’s also a nature preserve where endangered piping plovers nest, so it’s a popular bird-watching spot as well. Sandy Point was once attached to Napatree, but hurricane erosion separated the two. The 35-acre island also has a public beach and is a nature preserve.

PLAY The small downtown area of Watch Hill is on the National Register of Historic Places. The Flying Horse Carousel (151 Bay St.) is the oldest continuously operating carousel in the country, and The Watch Hill Lighthouse (14 Lighthouse Rd.), a 15-minute walk from downtown Westerly, dates back to 1856, and its museum is typically open to the public in July and August.

BLOCK ISLAND An island adventure just a ferry ride away

The Oar is a boater-friendly retreat complete with showers and outdoor bar

The National Hotel is Block Island’s flagship Victorian hotel

If you’re arriving on the island by the Block Island Ferry, you’ll land in Old Harbor, which is the busy “Main Street” area of the island. Dodge and Water streets are full of boutiques, surf shops, and novelty souvenirs and apparel retailers, like the Golddiggers (90 Chapel St.) for fine and novelty jewelry, and Blocks of Fudge (459 Chapel St.) for all your sweet treats.

DINE There are so many options for delicious food on Block Island – your only boundaries are your stomach and your ferry time. gluten-free banana bread, and their signature smoothie bowls – the perfect marriage of thickened fruit-based smoothies with granola. The Beachead (598 Corn Neck Rd.) is not only conveniently located down the street from the town beach, but it’s also crazy delicious. Seafood is a must-order here. Poor People’s Pub (33 Ocean Ave.) serves gastropub fare, and its sister restaurant TigerFish (126 Corn Neck Rd.) serves creative Asian cuisine. Boater-friendly restaurant The Oar (off West Side Rd.) has showers on the lower level and a lively dining area with an outdoor bar above (221 Jobs Hill Rd.). The National Hotel (36 Water St.) has great views of the harbor from its wraparound porch. Kimberly’s (238 Ocean Ave.) offers Italian

and American favorites. Block Island Oyster Bar (which moved to The Manisses on 251 Spring St.) offers your favorite menu items. Ballard’s Inn (42 Water St.) has its own beach and traditionally serves food and cocktails – in pineapples, no less – right on the sand. Speaking of cocktails, The Beach Bar at the Block Island Beach House (32 Dodge St.) promises to entice guests with refined pub food and spectacular views. Take a walk on the dock at New Harbor and reward yourself with a mudslide at Trader Vic’s, a rooftop bar where you can watch the boats come in and out of the harbor.

Once a summer playground for the rich and famous, Newport is a thriving cultural center in any season, filled with restaurants, shopping, museums, and plenty of fun. SHOP Within a relatively small footprint, different streets and areas around Newport each offer unique retail experiences. Enter via Broadway to find all kinds of funky stores, turn onto Thames for a mix of national retailers, souvenirs, furniture, and small shops, or head over to Bowen’s Wharf for jewelry, apparel and more along the water. On America’s Cup Avenue, enjoy meandering small boutiques or make your way up to Bellevue for upscale and artisanal businesses – and don’t skip streets like Spring either, which is bustling with a host of new shops.

DINE The dining scene in Newport is – in a word – legendary. From culinary classics to new must-try spots, there is no shortage of

amazing food experiences to be had in the City by the Sea. Longtime favorite Newport restaurants like The Mooring (1 Sayers Wharf), The Black Pearl (30 Bannister’s Wharf), and Brick Alley Pub and Restaurant (140 Thames St.) will always draw crowds for their fresh, locally inspired dining. Seafood is the starring attraction at several downtown restaurants, including the sleek and modern Midtown Oyster Bar (345 Thames St.) and family-friendly Fluke Newport (41 Bowens Wharf). Though Stoneacre Brasserie (28 Washington Sq.) changes its menu on a daily basis, you can count on Instagram-worthy, seasonal-focused dishes. The Fifth Element (111 Broadway) serves creative mains and more in casual-hip digs (including its Outer Element, an outdoor beer garden). Jo’s American Bistro (24 Memorial Blvd. W) offers several gluten-free options and a prix fixe menu Sunday through Thursday. adventure through Newport or Providence. It’s a scientific fact: A cocktail is best enjoyed outside, by the water, in the summer. Newport has many options for oceanside imbibing, like the rooftop bar at the Hotel Viking (1 Bellevue Ave.) and the Lawn at Castle Hill (590 Ocean Dr.). Both have prime spots for sitting in the sunshine, sipping a delicious cocktail, and taking in the view. The Salvation Cafe (140 Broadway), an eclectic restaurant a bit off the tourist path, serves up seasonal mojitos, sangria, and tropical tasting concoctions in its courtyard Tiki Bar. Speaking of exotic drinks, Diego’s (11 Bowen’s Wharf) – which just opened a Providence location in addition to the ones in Newport and Middletown – has a massive cocktail menu, as well as mezcal and tequila libations. Taste the difference between silver, reposado, and anejo at Perro Salado (19 Charles St.), where tequila flights offer tastings of the imported and hard-tofind spirit. Newport’s best known attractions are the Newport Mansions, the larger-than-life “summer cottages” of the Vanderbilts and other illustrious turn-of-the-century families. The Breakers (44 Ochre Point Ave.) is the grandest of all of them; Rosecliff (548 Bellevue Ave.) has been the site of films like The Great Gatsby and True Lies; Marble House (596 Bellevue Ave.) has a Chinese teahouse on the grounds; and The Elms (367 Bellevue Ave.) has a to-die-for classical sculpture garden. There are also many cultural attractions, like the Newport Art Museum (76 Bellevue Ave.), the National Museum of American Illustration (492 Bellevue Ave.), the Audrain Automobile Museum (222 Bellevue Ave.), and the International Tennis Hall of Fame (194 Bellevue Ave.). Also check out Spring Bull Gallery (55 Bellevue Ave.), a co-operative art gallery showcasing work in different styles by an array of local artists.

PLAY Brenton Point State Park is a green space on Ocean Avenue – its proximity to the windy shore makes it a perfect location for kites, which dot the sky on warm days. Easton’s Beach, also known as First Beach,

has a boardwalk, a killer snack bar – seriously, try the lobster roll – and a carousel. It’s also home to the Save the Bay Exploration Center (175 Memorial Blvd.), an aquarium where kids can get up close and personal with Narragansett Bay’s aquatic life. The Cliff Walk, a three-and-a-half-mile mostly paved trek, offers breathtaking views of the coast. About a third of it is rough or rocky, so proper footwear is advised. Another adventurous way to see Narragansett Bay is on the Rail Explorers (1 Alexander Rd.), a pedal-powered vehicle that rides along the Newport and Narragansett Bay Railroad. Looking to surf? Catch a wave with a board rental from local fave Water Brothers (39 1/2 Memorial Blvd.), open with safety precautions. The City by the Sea’s anticipated film festival returns – at a safe social distance – with newportFILM Drive-In, a series of traveling documentary screenings around Aquidneck Island. Looking to surf? Catch a wave with a board rental from local fave Water Brothers (39 1/2 Memorial Blvd.); also enjoy journeys at sea with Fish n’ Tales Adventures (31 Bowen’s Wharf) and Gansett Cruises (2 Bowen’s Landing).

A CHIC AND HISTORIC COASTAL COMMUNITY

The series of communities east of Narragansett Bay are collectively known as the East Bay. The coastal area – which includes towns Barrington, Warren, Bristol, Portsmouth, Middletown, Tiverton, and Little Compton – is also home to many of Rhode Island’s largest farms, vineyards, and parks.

includes a market cafe and pick-your-own fruit. A small family farm, Sakonnet Farm (4042 Main Rd., Tiverton) offers free-range eggs, fresh produce, and homemade jams and pies. Wishing Stone Farm (25 Shaw Rd., Little Compton) is a modest-sized farm that has historically presented Instagram-ready farm dinners with some of the Ocean State’s top restaurants and chefs. Newport Vineyards (909 E Main Rd., Middletown), New England’s largest grape grower, is a major destination that offers wine tastings, tours, and farm-to-plate cooking at Brix Restaurant. Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyards (162 West Main Rd., Little Compton) is a dreamy space with award-winning wines that has recently reopened and offers wine by the bottle and graband-go foods to enjoy on the property. Find Southern-inspired, veggie-forward cuisine at Hunky Dory (40 Market St.), creative small plates at The Revival Craft Kitchen and Bar (50 Miller St.), and Insta-worthy brunch at Uptown Food & Spirits (437 Main St.) in Warren. There’s seafood classics with nautical vibes abound at Thames Waterside Bar & Grill (251 Thames St.) in Bristol and a view to match at Bluewater Bar + Grill (32 Barton Ave.) in Barrington. In

Middletown, find long-standing legacy Flo’s Clam Shack (4 Wave Ave.) and its sister location with a drive-in in Portsmouth (Park Ave., Island Beach Park). For an on-the-go option, grab a gourmet takeout dinner or groceries to make your own from Hope & Main (691 Main St., Warren) on their weekly What’s Local Wednesdays. Then, don’t forget to check out 15 Point Road Restaurant (15 Point Rd., Portsmouth), an upscale-meets-casual dining destination, and just a minute down the road, Thriving Tree Coffee House (706 Park Ave., Portsmouth) serves hot cuppas, pastries, and more – both on the shoreline. More water views can be found at beloved neighborhood seafood joint Bluewater Bar + Grill (32 Barton Ave., Barrington) and gourmet creperie and coffee shop Cafe Water Street (279 Water St., Warren).

EXPLORE Though this charming waterfront town draws locals and visitors for its hopping downtown dining and shopping scene, Bristol is also a destination for historic sites. Blithewold Mansion, Gardens and Arboretum (101 Ferry Rd.) is an impeccable property that includes the 1890s

Head to the water to discover more shops including The Peyton Company (246 Water St.) for organic bath and beauty products. In Bristol, Caron Jewelers (473 Hope St.) has a stunning collection of fine jewelry and browse local artisan gifts galore at Hotpoint Emporium (39 State St.). Find flowers, jewelry, and more at daisy dig’ins (123 Maple Ave.) in Barrington, or cross over the Mount Hope and Sakonnet bridges for an all-day, quintessential New England shopping experience at Tiverton Four Corners (Main Rd.), with a diverse variety of antique, artisan, boutique shopping, and galleries. summer cottage of Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle. Tours of the mansion and extensive gardens are offered throughout the year along with virtual and onsite programs. Overlooking Narragansett Bay, Mount Hope Farm (250 Metacom Ave.) is a historically significant property that dates back to early American settlement. In fact, some historians believe that the first Thanksgiving feast was held here. Linden Place (500 Hope St.) is also steeped in history as one of the grandest examples of Federalist architecture in New England. Today the museum mansion offers community educational programs, tours, and events. Consider a scenic drive to Little Compton where you’ll find Wilbur’s General Store (50 Commons), the Art Cafe, honor system farm stands, and oodles of simple charm. Or, use that drive to discover new artists in every kind of medium through the self-guided South Coast Artists Open Studio Tour (SouthCoastArtists.org) that runs the weekends of July 17 and 18 and August 21 and 22.

often called the “gem” of the state parks, is a gorgeous public space with panoramic views of the coast, impeccably manicured lawns, four miles of bike trails, hundreds of picnic tables, and a small town beach. Nearby, the Audubon Nature Center and Aquarium (1401 Hope St., Bristol) typically offers visitors interactive exhibits about marine and wildlife and leaves its grounds open for long walks. The natural history museum is located right off the East Bay Bike Path, a 14.5-mile paved and scenic trail that spans from Bristol to Providence. The Norman Bird Sanctuary (583 Third Beach Rd., Middletown) has seven miles of well-preserved hiking trails on its educational campus. Of course, it isn’t summer in the East Bay without the Fourth of July in Bristol. Often referred to as the “most patriotic town in America,” this waterfront community is home to the nation’s longest running Fourth of July parade. The Bristol Fourth of July Celebration is typically a multiweek series of events that culminates into the renowned parade held this year on July 5. Pr o v i d e n c e AN EVER-VIBRANT CREATIVE CAPITAL

Providence is worthy of a full vacation in its own right, but if your schedule only leaves room for a single day trip, here are some must-see highlights.

PROVIDENCE An ever-vibrant Creative Capital

The “Still Here” mural by Gaia stands out against the city skyline

Downtown Providence aka Downcity is home to many of the Creative Capital’s most acclaimed restaurants, along with nightlife, theater, art galleries, and unique shopping. One of the most unique shopping destinations anywhere is The Arcade (65 Weybosset St.), America’s oldest indoor shopping mall, which is home to hip drinking and dining establishments, and a bookstore dedicated to the city’s own H.P. Lovecraft. On the street parallel, find stylish clothing for women at Queen of Hearts and Modern Love (220-222 Westminster St.), artful home goods at Homestyle (229 Westminster St.), and more. On the East Side of the city, Hope Street brims with unique boutiques: Frog & Toad (795 Hope St.) sells quirky RI merch, Rhody Craft (769 Hope St.) offers local artisan gifts, and Stock Culinary Goods (756 Hope St.) has everything your kitchen could need.

DINE Federal Hill is Providence’s famed Little Italy, but over the past decade or so it has become a much more multicultural dining destination. The main drag of Atwells Avenue is still home to many classic red sauce joints like Constantino’s Venda Bar & Ristorante

118

SO Rhode Island Summer • July 2021

and Trattoria Zooma, but boasts Mexican (Don Jose Tequilas), Thai (Thailand), and Japanese food (NAMI), too. For dining and nightlife that’s a bit off the beaten path, head over to the West Side, which is clustered around the two main thoroughfares of Broadway and Westminster Street. This area is home to the city’s vanguard of restaurants serving gourmet food in fun, casual settings, and hip cocktail bars, like eclectic brunch at Julian’s (318 Broadway) or clever desserts from Sin (1413 Westminster St.).

EXPLORE The East Side is full of both beautifully preserved history and vibrant young energy. For the former, check out the Benefit Street Mile of History, the most impressive concentration of colonial homes in the country. For the latter, visit Thayer Street, the epicenter of College Hill’s food and nightlife scenes. Home to Brown University, the Rhode Island School of Design, and the RISD Museum (20 North Main St.), this neighborhood attracts the bright and creative. Colorful murals and structures can be spotted throughout the city’s center, most of

them courtesy of The Avenue Concept. The cutting-edge public arts program has quite literally transformed the cityscape, including the larger-than-life Still Here (32 Custom St.) installation with acclaimed artist Gaia. Of course, a trip to PVD wouldn’t be complete without a day at Roger Williams Park Zoo (1000 Elmwood Ave.), which is hosting special adults-only Sip & Strolls on July 15 and August 12, complete with Zoo-themed cocktails, live music, and plenty of photo ops.

PLAY Explore the city from a different vantage point – while social distancing – by paddling with rentals from Providence Kayak (15 Bridge St.). Tour the Providence and Woonasquatucket Rivers, the Pedestrian Bridge, Waterplace Park, and more. Guided tours are also available. Around mid-August pack your camera or charge up your phone and head to where Wickenden Street meets South Main for 10,000 Suns. This empty parcel of land turned public art project dazzles visitors each bloom season with dense rows of tall wavy sunflowers and there’s even a red chair or two for picture-taking fun.

A trip to Warwick isn’t complete without a doughboy from Iggy’s Boardwalk

If you’re arriving by air, Warwick is your gateway to the Ocean State. SHOP Warwick is home to the sprawling Warwick Mall (400 Bald Hill Rd.), which features more than 80 shops. Find your favorite big department stores, plus a movie theater and several surrounding dining destinations. You can shop artisan gifts made by local veterans at Operation Made (1060 Toll Gate Rd.) or wander across town to the quaint boutiques, cafes, and more in Pawtuxet Village.

SO Rhode Island Summer • July 2021

DINE Iggy’s Boardwalk (885 Oakland Beach Ave.) is a Rhode Island classic, which features clam shells stuffed with a seasoned breading and minced clam mixture (aka “stuffies”), clam cakes, and chowder, and their famous golden-fried “doughboys”. Top of the Bay (898 Oakland Beach Ave.) offers a view of the Bay alongside casual New England fare. If you’re a beer lover, try the brews at Apponaug Brewing Co. (334 Knight St.), and if you’re looking for something with atmosphere, try the whimsical Tree House

Tavern (1094 Centerville Rd.) located in a converted 19th century farmhouse.

EXPLORE While this central Rhode Island hub is best known for T.F. Green Airport (2000 Post Rd.), there’s still plenty else to discover. Rocky Point was a large amusement park back in the day, drawing crowds until it closed in 1995. Now, Rocky Point Park (1 Rocky Point Ave.) offers natural trails and unmatched views of Narragansett Bay. Oakland Beach is a sandy getaway with a boat ramp and saltwater swimming.

The Seaside Victorian Cottage is RI’s newest reality (or realty) star

Long Live the Queen Victorian Sweenor Builders heads a long list of local talent that went into refurbishing This Old House “I saw the house for sale and knew it would be a great This Old House project but there was no owner at the time,” recalls Jeff Sweenor, president and CEO of Sweenor Builders in Wakefield. Sweenor called the listing agent to discuss the Folk Victorian he spotted, located in Narragansett’s historic district. A true diamond in the rough, the home, then-known as the Daniel A. Caswell House, had a deteriorating porch and rotting roof but also boasted prized features like a sunburst detail at the front of the house, “rising sun” patterned clapboards, an original decorative stained glass window, among other details prized by admirers of old architecture. “When they procured a buyer, I reached out to This Old House. They came to take a peek and knew it was a great fit for the show.” Photography by Nat Rea for This Old House July 2021 • SO Rhode Island Summer

For those just tuning in, 20 years before there was HGTV, there was This Old House. The PBS show truly launched a new television genre and four decades later continues to garner high ratings and empower home remodelers both pro and DIY. Sweenor explains that four years ago Tom Silva, a general contractor for the show, visited a Sweenor site for a brief tryout. “We built a custom curved deck with him. They filmed the segment and about a week later I got a call from the CEO. They said they’d like to incorporate Sweenor Builders!” Known today as the Seaside Victorian,

Sweenor relays that the first thing his crew did “was go around and document every little detail with photos, videos, sketches and notes” of the house built between 1887 and 1890. The intent of these records is for reference, to keep the original home’s integrity on file and cite elements large and small, such as front gable rake, siding and trim detail, bay window bracket detail, and door roof overhang and bracket detail. “The list goes on, and we did actually bring certain items back to the shop to either repair or replicate exactly, but the documentation process allows us to look back at every little detail to ensure the home keeps

LUNCH BREAK “Every filming day includes a lot of laughs!” says Jeff Sweenor, who notes his personal favorite place for lunch is Auntie’s Kitchen. “I go every day at ‘Kale O’clock’ and if you haven’t been, I recommend getting the ‘Jeff Salad’.” Gansett Wraps is another favorite of the crew. its historic architectural detail.” Along with mindful restoration projects, the property was treated to new construction, including a garage with master suite above, with the middle of the home joined by a mudroom, bathroom, and hallway. The wraparound front porch was completely rebuilt and VaproShield, a barrier to the salty air, was installed to the framework; fresh cedar shingles, now painted in two contrasting shades of blue, cover the exterior. A new shed complements the Victorian architecture, the driveway was refreshed with cobblestone work, and there is an outdoor kitchen with a fireplace.

Good Vibes Only Refresh body and soul this summer with holistic services available around Southern Rhode Island

Even as the pandemic begins to wane and vaccination rates rise, your body and soul may be in need of a well-deserved reboot after a long, taxing year (to say the least). Holistic health practices tend to the mind, body, and spirit with techniques cultivated over centuries, offering alternatives to Western medicine and treatments. These techniques, born across the globe, have found increasing popularity in the United States and right here in Rhode Island. Reiki is a Japanese energy therapy discovered in the 1800s, during which a practitioner lightly places their hands on or just above a patient’s body to initiate an energy transfer. “It’s allowing your body to really enter into more of a restful state,” says Reiki practitioner Elaine Dejoy, who owns Awaken Your Health Naturally in Narragansett. “And once your body can relax, with permission to totally check out, it can really heal.” Here is a list of some local practitioners offering reiki and other holistic treatments to ease tension and soothe your soul.

A REIKI WORLD Perfect the art of reiki yourself. From novice to master, this center caters to all levels of experience through in-house classes. If you’d rather sit back and relax, opt for a 25- or 50-minute treatment instead. South Kingstown, AReikiWorld.com ALL THAT MATTERS With over 80 weekly in-person and virtual yoga classes and a comprehensive menu of treatments – reiki, cupping, acupuncture, and more – there’s no shortage of options to choose from here. Rx for Summer Sun For many of us, the notion of sidling up to a druggist’s counter for a chocolate shake is something we’ve only experienced vicariously through movies like It’s a Wonderful Life, but generations ago a visit to most pharmacies also meant a made-to-order soda or a mocktail like a Lime Rickey or an Egg Cream (which contains neither egg nor cream) enjoyed right on the spot. Ken and Christina Procaccianti, Pharm D, have equipped each

of their two Green Line Apothecary locations with this throwback feature. Named after the MBTA line where the couple met, along with Rx services, the brand has its own line of goods like soaps, shampoos, vitamins, and supplements. Perfect for July, there’s also scratch-made ice cream in both original and vegan varieties, the shop’s own coffee blend, and branded insulated tumblers. “Summer at the fountain is sweet for all generations,”

says Christina. “One of my favorite moments is watching a grandparent bring their grandchild in to share the drugstore soda fountain experience for the first time,” adds Ken. Whether you’re sitting at the soda fountain, shopping for summertime essentials like sunscreen and bug spray, or taking advantage of their free delivery service to avoid the beach traffic, Green Line has quickly become a Rhode Island warm-weather staple.

CRACK OPEN A COCKTAIL South County Distillers offers a spin on vodka sodas with a summery cocktail line Nothing beats a tall vodka soda with a wedge of lime to stave off the heat and humidity of summer in the Ocean State. It’s simple but refreshing, gratifying yet low-calorie. Add South County Distillers’ craft vodka to the mix and you have yourself a treat, and this sister company of Grey Sail Brewing makes an easy cocktail as effortless as opening a can with their line of Sugar Reef Vodka & Sodas. “This summer, people are looking forward to being on the go again, and we wanted to offer a cocktail that can go with them,” explains co-owner Ryan Gwozdz. “Our canned cocktails are all-natural, made from real fruit, and only have 1.5 grams of sugar.” They also come in fruity varieties, like pineapple, mango, dragonfruit, and watermelon-lime, that complement the crisp, smooth flavors of grain-to-glass distillation you can expect from SCD spirits. A new Mojito Sugar Reef cocktail blends a little bit of sweetness, lime, and mint in a carbonated bevvie, and future releases are on the way featuring a new spirit. “Southern Rhode Island is known for its beach and boating culture,” says Gwozdz, who takes cues from the coastal landscape and recreation to create a refreshing line of cocktails perfect for unwinding after a day on the water or back porch sipping and dreaming about that next beach day. Find Sugar Reef four-packs in retail stores throughout the state or at Grey Sail Brewing in Westerly. Farm Fresh Fare in a Stellar Experience Exeter’s Celestial Café serves up five courses of locally sourced, elevated comfort food usually how I think about whiskey. The soup was an asparagus bisque, which was so outstandingly good, it deserves an ode: “This perfectly savory balance / of garlic and salt and fresh cream / extracts the essence of asparagus / better than I could have dreamed.” It takes a lot for asparagus to woo me into poetry. Chef Branden won me over at course one. Our second plate was a light and refreshing salad with feta, pickled beets, and a lemon and olive oil dressing that I would love to buy in bottled form. The appetizer also highlighted in-season asparagus, along with shiitake and portobello mushrooms, sauteed in chili oil and served with rice dumpling pasta. The spiciness of this course complemented our add-on Sweet Potato Wontons, which I highly recommend. Mark said it’s one of the most popular appetizers. “I’ll go to check on a table and the wontons will already be gone,” he explains. “People eat them like candy.” The main dish – a smoked brisket, shredded and topped with pickled slaw, green garlic mayo, and housemade BBQ sauce on a toasted brioche bun – is served with a green onion, saffron, dill, and turmeric potato salad. Simply put, it’s the definition of “elevated comfort food.”

Rhubarb Meringue Pie

SO Rhode Island Summer • July 2021

I felt transported to my youth, eating Sloppy Joes in my backyard, except this was a refined adult experience. That brisket! I’d like to start a petition to make it a permanent menu item. To end, we had Rhubarb Meringue Pie, which I could have sworn was topped with toasted marshmallows instead of meringue. Light and sweet, it was the kind of dessert you can trick yourself into eating even when you’re full because it’s not too heavy. It was the perfect way to conclude our meal. If I had to rate this dinner on a scale, I would say Celestial Café earns its name: I’d give it all the stars.

Each month for over a decade, Branden Read, chef and co-owner of Celestial Café, has been hosting a local farm dinner series highlighting the bounty of Rhode Island’s farms, fisheries, and food purveyors like vineyards and creameries. Five courses and a craft cocktail are served in a spacious open dining room with wooden floors and nautically blue walls. When my friend and I visited, large picture windows doused the space with that perfect “magic hour” lighting. Though the evening’s prix fixe farm dinner menu of a soup, salad, appetizer, entree, and dessert sounded like it would be plenty, our server provided us with an a la carte menu, too, just in case. After seeing Sweet Potato Wontons, we were sold on a bit of indulgence. But first, drinks. Even these were local Rhode Island to the core, including an ale from Tilted Barn and a prosecco from Gooseneck Vineyards. The cocktail, called The First Encounter, was made with Sons of Liberty whiskey, mixed with honey liqueur, muddled mint, and a rhubarb-lime reduction. It tasted like a whiskey mojito. “It’s the amount of sweet I want in a summer drink without being overwhelming,” my friend said. It was refreshing and perfect for day drinking, which is not

New vineyard tills SK soil for estate wines to come Lush fields of grapevines, sweeping views of bucolic South Kingstown, and a pristinely restored manor: These are the sights you’ll take in over a glass of wine at Shepherd’s Run vineyard and venue come August once everything is just right. Says general manager Susan Denice, “Our winemaker Mike Harney has been making wine in New England for over 15 years, so he understands the soil, the New England weather patterns – or lack thereof. As a team, Ryan Schoen, myself, and Harney want to grow varietals that grow well in this climate… The terroir of each vineyard we find is unique and we aim to express that through our winemaking process.” As the vines are just beginning to grow, it will be four to five years before estate wines are on the shelf, but in the meantime their first season will include selections from places like the Finger Lakes, Sonoma Coast, and Wahluke Slope in Washington. Grapes sourced both regionally and globally will go into a diverse portfolio, and food truck nights, a pig roast, and meal pairings will round out the experience. Shepherds.Run

Famed PVD taqueria comes to Jamestown Now Tallulah’s taco fans don’t have to trek all the way to Providence for a fix, as the popular taqueria has opened their second location on Narragansett Avenue in Jamestown. “Our ultimate goal is the same as it has always been,” explains co-owner Kelly Ann Rojas, “to serve flavorful food made with quality ingredients to our guests from our kind-hearted, motivated team and make a positive impact in our community.” This includes staples like Carnitas Tacos, Camaron Burritos, and Papas al Chipotle Nachos, plus house margaritas, veggie options, and refreshing Jarritas sodas.

With a commissary kitchen coming later this year in the Farm Fresh RI hub in Providence, chef and co-owner Jake Rojas says, “These new spaces significantly expand our kitchen space, so I’ll have more room to experiment and add other offerings... Expect even more creativity from our kitchen and operations! One taco at a time.” These new creations will find their way to the Jamestown eatery, too, which will also expand to outdoor patio dining on a first-come-first-served basis this month, with new days and hours added for summer. Gourmet mini pancakes on-the-go On the one hand breakfast, on the other dessert, Lulu’s Little Pancakes dares to take a beloved diner staple a step (or three) further by sparing no indulgence. From riffs on actual sweets like Strawberry Shortcake or Banana Cream Pie to fruity Mango Tango with mango puree, fresh blueberries, and white chocolate chips, owner Adrianna Webster seeks to devise variations for everyone’s taste to create “a whole new pancake eating experience”. She explains, “There’s the convenience of them being bite-sized and the creative, gourmet topping selection… We aim to be more of a dessert option than breakfast, although I admittedly wouldn’t mind eating these delicious mini pancakes in the morning!” Though based in a recently opened brick-andmortar in Cranston, Lulu’s main beat is the food truck circuit, with plans to post up on Bridal Avenue in West Warwick along with events across South County and the state. Watch for the purple truck and get ready to trade maple syrup for the likes of cookie butter, Crunch Berry cereal, and fresh fruit. Facebook: Lulu’s Little Pancakes
