Brain workout creates balance

Dragonfly Touch offers alternative approach to treat chronic pain and illness For some new businesses, what they provide for clients is implied by the name. For others, including Neurofeedback trainer Alene Norris’s new endeavor, Dragonfly Touch, educating the public on what is offered requires more explanation. “It’s taken me two years of studying and working with my clients to be able to explain what Neurofeedback is in several minutes,” says Alene, an Edmonton native who moved to Powell River eight years ago. Neurofeedback is a workout for the brain, training it to become more flexible and resilient by interacting with the central nervous system. “It creates a balance and settles the whole central nervous system down by picking up on the frequency of the brain,” explains Alene. According to Alene, neurofeedback is beneficial to people suffering from a wide range of health issues, including migraines, anxiety, depression, sleeplessness, addiction, obesity, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis (MS) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), “to name a few,” she says. “We cannot repair things like dementia or MS, but we can slow the process down.” Clients undergoing chemotherapy, who sometimes have what is called “chemo brain,” have also achieved strong results from regular visits with Alene. “Results are astounding for kids suffering with ADHD, seizures or the aftereffects of head trauma, too.” After an initial consultation process, clients come in for a

series of sessions, the number of which varies depending on each circumstance. Sensors are attached to the scalp and connected to a NeurOptimal® braintraining algorithm, which measures and displays brainwaves. Results are used to teach self-regulation of brain function. “It’s holistic, non-invasive and has no side effects,” says Alene. “Some clients come in on their lunch break and fall asleep; you don’t have to be awake for the session, pretty cool in my books.” Alene started her career as a healer in Australia, where she worked for nine years as a care

aide. After returning to Canada, she worked in the hospital and at residential care facilities in Powell River before studying aromatherapy and energy healing. She became a certified NeurOptimal® Neurofeedback trainer in 2014 and completed Reiki levels one and two in 2015. “I’ve worked in the medical world for 15 years and, more recently, trained in theta healing in Brazil, where I opened a clinic last year,” says Alene, who has travelled in Europe, Asia and around the globe for 13 years, which has served to enhance her healing abilities. Alene’s path to the field of

Neurofeedback came as a result of her own issues with migraines and 16 years of suffering with insomnia. At the suggestion of a friend, she visited a Neurofeedback practitioner, despite initial skepticism. “It was phenomenal, after 14 sessions, I could feel my authentic self start to come alive again and I haven’t had a migraine since.” says Alene. “I am living proof that this works.” After seeing the benefits personally, Alene decided to help others achieve the same positive results. “A lot people who come to me are desperate,” she says. “I have given

them hope when they felt certain that hope was merely a word, not a reality. I want to help all those people out there, of all ages.” Alene says she treats causes, not symptoms, and helps clients live more manageable and healthy lives. Although clinics can be found worldwide, Alene is the only Neurofeedback trainer in Powell River. To book a consultation, call 604.483.6643, email alenecottontail@yahoo.com, or search for Dragonfly Touch on Facebook. For more information on neurofeedback, go to zengar.com.

composers including quartet member Côté-Giguère. “Anybody who knows string quartets, we are a bit like that, but with guitars, of course,” says Trépanier. “Most of the original pieces have a South American bent to them. Anyone who would call themselves a ‘guitar head’ would find loads of things to love about our concert. There is lots of intricate, exciting guitar playing going on.” While the show is full of high-energy guitar work, Trépanier says the quartet takes time to talk to the audience between pieces in order to provide background and context. Over the years, he says, the show has become more interactive and fine-tuned. “We work very hard and we do a lot

of work to improve our details,” says Trépanier. “One thing we have in spades is a sense of energy and happiness on stage. We’re just so happy to be able to perform, which is quite regularly. It’s like being on a sports team when you are in top shape and pushing it to the limit.”

For the Canadian Guitar Quartet, there is no such thing as a passive or aloof audience. No matter where the Eastern Canadian quartet plays a concert, there are always classical guitar enthusiasts, fellow guitarists and music students to be found in the audiences. “It does up our nerves if there are music colleagues in the room,” admits Louis Trépanier, member of the quartet and also a University of Ottawa guitar professor. “Playing to other guitarists is great though, because you know that you have people who really speak the language of what you are playing.” Comprised of Trépanier, Julien Bi s a i l lon, Br u no Rou s s el a nd Renaud Côté-Giguère, the guitar quartet plays a classical concert at Powell River Academy of Music on Tuesday, January 24, with tickets on sale now. “We haven’t had a guitar quartet here before, or maybe if we have it has been quite a while,” says the academy’s music director Walter Martella. “Certainly, it’s different than our usual fare of concerts, so we’re looking forward to offering something new.” According to Trépanier, the concert will feature traditional classical repertoire, including Beethoven, Brahms and French composers from the late 1800s, as well as original works by

It is time for an honest survey of your fridge and compost bucket. As a nation, approximately 40 per cent of food grown for human consumption finds its way to the trash or compost pile unnecessarily. While significant wastage occurs at the agricultural level and grocery stores, much of it happens in our homes. Beyond the cost to your wallet is the cost to the planet. Resources required to transport a banana to your fruit basket to become a fruit-fly habitat are considerable. It all starts at the farm, where human labour, fertilizer and copious amounts of water, not to mention pesticides, are consumed. Transportation, marketing and refrigeration are then required to deliver fresh food to our plates. When we add the reality of food insecurity in our nation, it can motivate us to consider changing some simple habits to reduce our contribution to this global issue. Here are our top tips for avoiding food waste: Create an “eat me first” shelf in your fridge for food about to go off. Plan meals after scanning what is already in your pantry. Eat before you shop to avoid over-purchasing. Create a grocery list. Consider shopping for so-called “deals” carefully. Will you really eat all that cereal before it goes stale? Professional facial threading

PIECE OF PARADISE

Until January 31, receive a complimentary tint with a brow shape

7229 Cranberry Street • $339,000

What is threading? Threading is an ancient method of hair removal originating in the Middle East. A thin thread is doubled, then twisted, then rolled over areas of unwanted hair, plucking the hair at the follicle level. Threading removes short lines of hair instead of single hairs, like tweezing.

This 1-acre property is tucked away behind Cranberry Lake, just five minutes to downtown. The 4-bedroom home has great road appeal and a gas fireplace. Paint and carpets would really freshen this home up.

The advantage to threading is that it provides more precise control for shaping and is gentler on the skin.

Hypertension poses risk Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a significant health risk for many people. This is because it makes the heart work harder than it should and hardens the walls of arteries. Hypertension can lead to hemorrhage in the brain or cause kidneys to function poorly, or not at all. Uncontrolled, high blood pressure can lead to heart and kidney disease, stroke and blindness. Given the extensive dangers of hypertension, those frequent reminders to use less salt (sodium) and pull back from high-fat meats make more sense, don’t they? Various medications can help, even control, high blood pressure, but there is a first line of attack to consider that involves no medication, just healthier eating habits. The Dietary Approaches to Stopping Hypertension (DASH) eating plan was devised in the early 1990s by American-based National Institutes of Health to prevent and control hypertension. The result was a medication-free approach that

HEALTHY LIVING By Paul Martiquet lowers, even prevents, high blood pressure. DASH is not so much a diet, but rather a method for healthy eating. It focuses on fruits and vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products. It also means a reduction in sodium, sweets, red meat and other foods high in saturated fat. DASH also emphasizes getting potassium from food because a potassium-rich diet may help to reduce elevated blood pressure. The goal behind creating DASH was to help with hypertension, but since

then, research has identified more benefits than originally expected. DASH improves blood cholesterol levels and other coronary risk factors and may help protect against diabetes and kidney stones. Numerous studies have also shown that the diet reduces the risk of many diseases, including some kinds of cancer, stroke, heart disease, heart failure, kidney stones and diabetes. Mor e r e c ent l y, s t udies from Johns Hopkins University identified other potential benefits. Gout, a very painful form of arthritis caused by the buildup of uric acid, may be helped by DASH. Another study suggests that people adhering to or being close to a DASH plan are less likely to develop chronic kidney disease. So far it looks good for DASH. And there is no bad news. Your eating will be more healthy and you will feel better. The question to ask then is, “How do I DASH?” Good news there, too. The DASH eating plan re-

quires no special foods and has no hard-to-follow recipes. It simply calls for a certain number of daily servings from various food groups. The number of servings depends on the number of calories that should be consumed each day, which depends on age and how active a person is. For example, a moderately active male aged 31 to 50

should be taking in 2,4002,600 calories daily. A sedentary female over age 50 should consume 1,600 calories daily. The next step is to convert those numbers into portions from the DASH menu, easily done as it is available online at hypertension.ca/en/hypertension/what-can-i-do/eat-ahealthy-diet, or from your

health-care provider. A heart-healthy diet such as DASH offers far more benefits than reducing hypertension and provides an excellent model for healthy eating for everyone in the family. Paul Martiquet is the medical health officer for Powell River and Sunshine Coast.

Roses and

RASPBERRIES

Brightly lit Roses to whoever is responsible for erecting the star on the mountainside in Wildwood every December. The display brightens the neighbourhood, and my holiday spirit, each and every year. Roses to the clerk at a local grocery store who saw an elderly lady with a large order and went out of her way to help her on a busy day. Raspberries to the transportation providers for being rude and refusing to do an advanced booking, even though it was available. Roses to a family who invited a choir to lunch on the day of their last concert and even had two gentlemen sing. It was lovely. Raspberries to dog owners who let their animals loose in the neighbourhood. That’s what fences are for! Roses to the many people who stop and offer to assist or hold doors open for people who need extra help. Many Roses to the food distribution centres that manage to collect so much food and other resources, and for the many volunteer hours that make it possible on very low budgets. Most of the work is done by volunteers and the food comes from generous donors who prove daily that this community cares. I am grateful. If an annual kickoff to Powell River’s social scene exists, this was it. Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour rolled into town Friday, January 6, and Saturday, January 7, for two sold-out nights at Max Cameron Theatre. For the 12th time, organizer Jim Palm brought the event in as a fundraiser for programs at Brooks Secondary School. Many people involved in the region’s outdoor, backcountry, adventure and recreation activities were on hand, including Jillian Amatt, whose father, John Amatt, founded the festival in 1976.
