Decades of service combine in new company Providing reliable products ranks high for Powell River Heating and Air Conditioning
A new year brings new opportunities and a fresh start for everyone. For Peter Bordignon and Gary Slootweg, the early stages of 2017 also included a new business endeavour. Powell River Heating and Air Conditioning officially opened January 3. With 35 years of combined experience in the industry, Peter, a journeyman HVAC and refrigeration technician and gas fitter, and Gary, a ticketed gas fitter, offer area residents a new option for all their heating and cooling needs. “We’re the new best choice for heating and air conditioning in town,” says Gary, who also has vast experience as a sheet-metal installer. “We have everything a business or homeowner needs, and certified, trained technicians doing the job right.” Born and raised in Powell River, Gary owned and operated Powell River Carpet Cleaning and Heating Services, Slootweg Brothers and Cranberry Sheet Metal, prior to joining forces with Peter. Although the business name is new, customers can expect the same honest and reliable service Gary and Peter have become known for over the years. “We want to continue helping people, but with our own company and with great service and honest pricing,” explains Peter, who moved to Powell River from New Westminster three years ago with his wife and two young children; eight months ago, the couple welcomed a third child. The new company services and installs gas furnaces, heat pumps, fireplaces and heat re-
covery ventilators. Mini-split (ductless heat pumps) are also available. According to Peter, the wall-mounted units are becoming very popular. “Instead of requiring duct work, you have a unit mounted on your wall connecting to an outdoor heat pump,” he says. “Installed and sized correctly, they work great in almost any home. Compared to baseboards or electric furnaces, mini-splits save money on your hydro bill.” For customers interested in upgrades and looking for an evaluation of their current heating system, onsite visits and quotes are available free of charge. “We go to homes or businesses and talk to clients about what they want and inform them of
options relevant to their needs,” says Peter. “Each situation is assessed and we determine what is best for our client.” Powell River Heating and Air Conditioning also provides options for water heaters. In addition to regular hot water tanks, the company also installs and services Rinnai on-demand systems. “You get as much hot water as you want; you never run out,” says Gary. “They save a lot of space, too. Instead of a big tank in the corner, there is a small box on the wall.” Other products the business sells and services, but is not limited to, include Bryant, Mitsubishi and Daikin heating and cooling systems and Napoleon gas fireplaces.

Propane appliances can also be installed and fully serviced. “We work on any make or model and provide maintenance for all different HVAC systems in older homes or for new residential construction,” says Peter. “Our company is fully certified, bonded and insured, and we provide 24hour emergency service.” Full service is available for commercial businesses as well. “We also work with contractors around town,” says Gary. “If they’re building a house and need an HVAC system, we do all of the work associated with it, from furnaces and duct systems to heat pumps or fireplaces, and much more.” All customers are informed of the latest rebates available with

their new investments and provided with information on how to access them. For individuals without internet access, assistance in filling out the appropriate paperwork is offered. “At the moment, Fortis has a $1,000 grant available for switching from an oil furnace to a highefficient gas furnace,” says Peter. Other rebates, also through Fortis, include up to $1,000 for replacing old water heaters with natural gas models and $300 for a qualifying natural gas fireplace. BC Hydro offers an $800 rebate program for ductless heat pumps. For more information, call 604.489.0030, email prheating@hotmail.com, or search for Powell River Heating and Air Conditioning on Facebook.

Ski Movie Night screens Valhalla Knuckleheads association continue promotion of Powell River winter recreation
Q: What are special or extraordinary expenses? A: Under Child Support Guidelines a court may order that, in addition to monthly child support, an amount is paid toward prescribed costs such as medical/ dental costs, daycare, extracurricular expenses or post-secondary education. The guiding principle is that the expense is necessary and reasonable and that it will be shared by the parents in proportion to their respective incomes once subsidies, benefit plan coverage and tax deductions are considered. Please call us if you wish to discuss your situation.

K nuck leheads W i nter Recreation Association is using an upcoming Ski Movie Night, featuring the acclaimed ski film Valhalla, to raise awareness about winter recreation in Powell River. “Everyone knows that Powell River is a recreational paradise in the wa r mer mont hs,” says Knuckleheads vice-president Roger Artigues, “but, come the colder months, not many realize we have the potential for skiing, snowmobiling and all of the other activities that people enjoy in the winter.” After many years of behind-the-scenes trail building and cabin maintenance, the association is starting to take a more visible approach to promoting winter recreation. By fostering a sense of mountain culture and community, the association hopes to build support for its ongo-

ing plans to increase access and available infrastructure for winter recreation. Screening Valhalla, the genre-defying ski film from Sweetgrass Productions, is intended to raise awareness and also help fund the planned construction of a new high-elevation alpine cabin in the Knuckleheads Winter Recreation Area. This is a first step toward establishing a family-friendly lodging where people can comfortably spend the night and enjoy their choice of snowsports, says Artigues. “A lot of people in the association have young kids and they’d like to be able to take their kids up there to share
their passion for the snow and mountains with the next generation,” he says. Valhalla was selected for the Ski Movie Night because of its storyline and message, says Artigues. “It’s not your typical ski movie; it fits in with what we are trying to promote about mountain culture,” says Artigues. “It’s all about the freedom and joy that you get up in the mountains in the winter.” Hoping to keep the momentum rolling from the recent Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour event and the topic of winter recreation on residents’ minds, Artigues says those who attend Knuckleheads’
Ski Movie Night will come away inspired. “Ex pect an enjoyable celebration of mountain ski culture with friends,” he says, “and a movie that has great ski footage, but also a lot of culture and soul.” Preceded by a “beer hour” in association with Townsite Brewing, the film runs 64 minutes.

Cure for gardening blues
Neurofeedback is available
LET’S TALK TRASH
Here are a few ways: 1. Gather seaweed after winter storms. Kelp is rich in minerals and nutrients and can be used for sheet mulching, adding to compost or making compost tea. Ensure the seaweed is not home to fish eggs or other sea life prior to harvesting. 2. Connect with friends who have livestock and offer to take any manure or used bedding off their hands. In spring and summer, these become hot commodities and may be harder to find. Chicken manure needs time to cure, so collecting it early will give it time to cool and avoid burning sensitive rootlets. 3. Cardboard is in ample supply in the form of boxes and can be a perfect garden base to suppress weeds. You can remove all the tape and staples while listening to your favourite tunes on a rainy evening. 4. Burlap sacks come in handy for mak-

ing paths, suppressing weeds and storing harvested root vegetables. They are in high demand during gardening season, so hunt for them now for best results. 5. Coffee grounds are nitrogen-rich and make a great addition to a compost heap. Many local cafés separate out their grounds and give them away to gardeners for free. 6. Creating biochar can be a great winter activity. Collect untreated waste wood, tree trimmings and woody weeds and burn them at high heat. Dousing with water before they turn to ash leaves pure charcoal. It is a great soil amendment that helps soil hold moisture and house microorganisms. Cure your winter blues by putting your green thumbs into action. Let’s Talk Trash is Powell River Regional District’s waste-management education program

In the depths of winter, avid gardeners can become itchy for a project. Planning vegetable beds, organizing seeds and researching plant pairings are a few ways for the green thumb to capitalize on these short days. Another way to prepare for spring thaw is gathering soil amendments that will feed plants as well as materials to suppress weeds. It is surprising how many resources can be stockpiled by becoming creative at this time of the year.

Saving a life through organ donation We’re getting ready for an exciting change!
HEALTHY LIVING
Coming February 1
By Paul Martiquet Here is something to think about: Would you donate a part of yourself to help someone else live? That is the central question of organ donation. Choosing to offer your organs to be used for transplant upon your passing is an important question to consider, and worthy of a decision. Most people have thought about organ donation and some have volunteered to be donors. In BC, we have an opt-in system whereby a person, or their families,

must choose to become a donor when the time comes. This is in contrast to an opt-out system, also called presu med consent, i n which every person at time of death is considered for organ donation unless they have specifically stated
they are against doing so. At first blush, this sounds like a good idea for increasing donation rates, but there are reasons why it is not used in BC. It turns out there is little solid evidence to support that presumed consent increases the rate HEALTHY LIVING » 16

but are ALL your ducks in a row! • BC has the second highest PROBATE fees in the country. Learn what probate is and how it will effect your executor and estate. • Power of Attorney, Rep. Agreements and Joint Ownership. Which planning tool will help your family the most? • Cremations and Burials not pre-planned lead to overspending. Learn how pre-planning makes things easier for loved ones. • Most Canadians do NOT have a proper Living Will! Ensure your family is protected from the anxiety of forced medical decisions.
The Recreation Complex will be transitioning to a new registration software system on February 1, 2017. Please allow a few extra minutes for our team to assist you with your program registration and membership renewals during this transition.
NEW FACILITY ACCESS CARDS
During a regular visit after February 1, our reception team will take a new photo and issue you a new access card. When you set up your new facility access card in February, you will be automatically entered to WIN AN ANNUAL RECREATION ACCESS PASS. Draw will occur March 1, 2017
SPRING/SUMMER 2017 REGISTRATION Program registrations will open February 10, 2017. All program registrations will be processed in our new software. As this is a completely new software program, we will be creating new customer accounts during your first registration. Please allow a few extra minutes for our reception team to create a new account for your family.

from page 15 of donations. In many jurisdictions, the policy is not enforced, so the family of the deceased still has to make the decision. Instead, BC has increased donation rates by building awareness, educating families and medical staff. Whatever the model, the wait list for an organ transplant far outweighs the number of organs available for transplant. The first organ transplant performed in BC (a kidney) occurred in 1968 a t Va n c o u v e r G e n e r a l Hospital. Since then, almost 7,000 t ra nspla nt s have been per for med in the prov ince. Today, all transplant surgeries in BC take place at one of the three transplant centres: BC Children’s Hospital, St Paul’s Hospital and Vancouver General Hospital. Organ donation in BC is managed by BC Transplant (transplant.bc.ca), which provides oversight for all aspects of organ donation and transplantation across BC. The most commonly transplanted organs are kidneys, liver, heart, pancreas, lungs and small intestine. Transplants can be whole organs, or segments (nodes), as in the liver or lung. Organ donation need not be from a deceased person. Living donors may donate a kidney, a lobe of a lung, a lobe of the liver (which will grow back to normal size over time, in the donor and recipient), a section of intestine or a part of their pancreas. Other donations include bone marrow, umbilical cord blood and peripheral blood stem cells. Living donors can donate to a specific individual, such as a family member, friend or to a person they know who needs an organ, or they can donate to someone in need by donating to the provincial organ donor organization. There are few acts more selfless than providing the means of life to another person. Think about it, make a decision and visit the BC Transplant website to register. 1100 In Memoriam
1105 Obituaries July 12, 1939 - January 14, 2017
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Mary-Lou Vella, on January 14. She is joyfully gone to be with God; Domenic, the love of her life; and, in her words “Elvis.” Mary-Lou was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba, in the summer of 1939. She moved to Powell River in 1958 after meeting and falling in love with Domenic on a visit. They kept in touch via love letters for eight months until she and her mother moved to Powell River in 1959. Three short months later, Mary-Lou and our handsome dad were married in September of 1960. Less than five years later, by May of 1965, this prolific couple had four children. When her youngest was school age, Mary-Lou became secretary at Assumption School, a position she held for 39 years. She loved her job and it showed. In the words of a recent Facebook post by a former student: Mrs. Vella’s beautiful smiles were one of the aspects that lit up Assumption School and days of the students who attended. The warmness of her heart helped to create that magical family-oriented environment that made Assumption School a beautiful place to be. Mom was blessed with boundless energy. This manifested itself in daily five-mile walks, knitting, baking bread and desserts, winemaking and always trying new recipes at her frequent gourmet dinners. Her infectious “joie de vivre” knit our family together. The thread that ran through Mary-Lou’s life was her love of family. She was happiest when she could say, “I have all my children around me.” This is exactly how she passed away. Mary-Lou was predeceased by our dad, her husband of 47 years, and is survived by her children: Gay, Dan (Pauline), Jo, Sam and Marc (Nancy); her grandchildren: Aeryn, Braden, David and Zandra; Colin, Chris, Dehl, Leo, Victoria, Miranda and Sophia; her greatgrandchildren: Kaydence, Hazel, Nya, Livia and Fynn (with another due in March!); and four of her siblings. The family has tremendous gratitude to the following: first and foremost, Teresa Bennett, for her tireless dedication to both our mother and ourselves; to the medical community: Doctor Dohm and Doctor May; the homecare nursing staff, including Sheena and Kathleen; occupational therapist Jennifer, the home support staff; and finally to all her friends who visited, sent cards, flowers, goodies and prayers. Mom so enjoyed the time spent with each and every one of you, and we enjoyed the goodies! Mary-Lou’s funeral Mass will be held at Church of the Assumption on Saturday, January 21, at 1 pm, followed by a celebration of life at Carlson Community Club at 2:30 pm. Mom wanted a casual, blue-jean affair for her celebration of life.

August 7, 1965 January 15, 2017
It is with heavy hearts that the Huetzelmann family announces the passing of Roland, or, “Rollie.” Rollie was involved in a tragic workplace accident in Saanich, BC, on January 10, that ultimately resulted in his passing at Victoria General Hospital. Rollie was the youngest of six boys. Born in Victoria, BC, he was raised in James Bay as well as Powell River, where he graduated from Max Cameron Secondary School. Rollie will be remembered for his contagious million-dollar smile, his ability to make you laugh, his happy-go-lucky and free-spirited attitude, his sense of adventure and his enthusiasm for his bike. Rollie is survived by his parents Gerhardt and Hildegard Huetzelmann, his brothers Gary (Sharon), Roy, Brian, William and Joe (Brenda), numerous nieces and nephews, as well as his partner Coreen Desjarlais, her son, Isaiah, and her mother, Dolly. A drop-in celebration of life will be held at Rollie’s brother Joe’s place, 3904 Manitoba Avenue, on Saturday, January 28, from 12-6 pm. All those who knew and loved Rollie are welcome to attend. Those who wish to attend may call Joe at 604.483.8119 or email him at jhandco@telus.net for further details.
