Home show supports charities Powell River Home and Garden Show showcases businesses and helps non-profit organizations Booths at Powell River Home and Garden Show are completely sold out for the second consecutive year. Exhibitors are preparing to offer products, information and expertise throughout Hap Parker Arena next weekend. Promoting and showcasing a large number of local businesses, and a select few from out of town, is the main focus for Powell River Home and Garden Association. The non-profit group, formed three years ago to organize the event, also places a large emphasis on giving back to the community. Prior to each show, board members Daniela D’Onofrio, Valerie Griffiths, Marci Gruntman, Melanie Sullivan and Leah Rourke select a local not-for-profit charity to collect admission at the door and keep 100 per cent of the proceeds for its own use. Entry is by donation, with $2 per person as the suggested amount. “We receive quite a few applications from organizations interested in being the charity of choice,” says Rourke. “The board reviews them all and makes a very difficult decision.” With many deserving non-profit groups requiring help, choosing only one is becoming harder every year, adds Rourke. After careful consideration, Powell River Therapeutic Riding Association earned the selection for 2017. “It came down to what they were planning to use the money for and how it will help their programs,” says Rourke. “They have to feed horses and pay for equipment, and they have veterinary requirements. The donations will go toward enhancing the proTCH

grams and that will really benefit their clients.” To help as many non-profits as possible, an area has been added at the show where interested organizations can set up a table at a reduced cost. “We still have room in that section,” says Rourke. “This is a way for those groups to connect with a large number of people.” In addition to non-profit support, the board also provides local businesses with a chance at receiving a free booth for the two-day event. The process is the same, with business owners applying and explaining how they would benefit from being selected. “It might be a new business or an existing business that can reallyal use the exposure,” says

Eat Street, a popular addition to last year’s show, will again feature food and refreshments from a variety of local vendors. “We will have hospitality tent with beer, wine and cider, too,” says Rourke. Other features include door prizes of $250 and $500, a parentsupervised kid zone sponsored by Cranberry Preschool, giveaways from vendors and the return of the Rona-sponsored Lego construction contest. Entry forms for the cash prizes will be available at the door. Registration forms and details regarding the Lego contest can be found on the show’s new website. “People can vote for their favourite Lego build in each of three age categories and the cor-

Rourke. “It’s something we like to offer to help give a boost to a local entrepreneur.” Blue Sky Consignment, a popup consignment shop featuring clothing, jewellery and home décor, was selected from another large group of applicants. According to Rourke, Blue Sky owners plan to use the booth to promote some of its unique home décor items. “Because Blue Sky is a pop-up, it is difficult to get exposure and let people know what and where it is,” says Rourke. “The home show is ideal for pop-ups, because thousands of people come through over the two days; it can help them take things to the next level and possibly become more permanent.”

It’s spring and the sun is starting to shine. You head out to explore some trails in the backwoods during one of our sunbursts and come across a drenched mattress covered in drywall, broken toys and diapers. How did this happen? Who chooses to trash nature rather than taking personal responsibility for the waste they generate? It’s a wonder when you consider the lengths illegal dumpers will take to dispose of trash out of the public eye. Whether through sheer ignorance or blatant disregard, litterbugs choose to use nature as a trashcan when many of the most commonly dumped items can be donated or disposed of responsibly. There are, for instance, options around town for free disposal of furniture, toys and clothing in good condition, lightbulbs, all types of batteries, small household appliances, electronics, scrap metal, used paint, smoke alarms, styrofoam, green waste, kitchen scraps, ovens, scrap cars and more. You can commit to being part of the solution by using these donation and drop-off sites. If you witness someone in the act of illegal dumping, note any personal information that will help identify them and call in an anonymous tip to Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) at 1.877.952.7277. You can also use the TrashOut.me app on your mobile phone to locate and photograph trash. Reported sites are uploaded

When you think about the way you prefer to be approached by your partner and the way you approach your partner, do you have an idea of how you like to feel? When we were young, we were often fed romantic fairytales of happily ever after, so it is no surprise that romance can play a big role in what excites us and how we like our partners to act toward us. So, what is this romance thing all about? How do you give it and how do you receive more of it? Sometimes, people become scared of romance because they worry it might mean they are making more of a commitment than they are ready for. Romance can also feel scary because it might mean acting mushy, and mushy can feel vulnerable. Also, there are people who just do not feel a connection to romance, and that is totally fine, too. Romance is often advertised as this thing all partners must do begrudgingly for each other, but only on special occasions such as

HEART OF THE MATTER By Niseema Emery Valentine’s Day, birthdays or anniversaries (tip: those special days can be romantic, but do not forget about ordinary “just because” days). When I talk about romance, I like to break it down into three areas of focus: feeling, touch and expression. If I could describe romance with words, I would say that it is all about warmth, connection and this overall glowing feeling in yourself. It is that feeling when you are first falling in love, when you can literally feel your heart expanding

with bliss and everything feels like pink, puffy clouds and perfection. Now take that in and imagine that when you touch your partner. You want them to feel all of that sweetness. Romantic touch is all about light, feathery touch and moving slow. Think about slowly tucking your sweetie’s hair behind his or her ears, with soft eye contact. Now, when we get to expressions, this can include words and actions. Things like “You’re the most beautiful person I’ve ever laid my eyes on” or “I want to be with you forever.” Other expressions can be a sweet text in the middle of the day, a handwritten letter or a surprise of your partner’s favourite chocolates or flowers, just because. No matter how big or small the expression, your sweetie is special and they are on your mind throughout the day. So go ahead and give romance a try. Niseema Emery is a certified intimacy and relationship coach in Powell River.

POWELL RIVER REGIONAL DISTRICT NOTICE TO ELECTORS in the TEXADA MEDICAL CLINIC SERVICE AREA Alternate Approval Process for the Texada Medical Clinic Building Upgrades NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN THAT, pursuant to the Local Government Act and the Community Charter, the Powell River Regional District proposes to enter into an agreement with Municipal Finance Authority to borrow funds for building upgrades for the Texada Medical Clinic over a period of 20 years.

The building upgrades are to remove and replace the existing floor and will include upgrades to the laboratory room (remove some gyproc and plywood cabinets, install storage shelves, supply and install new cabinets, countertops, wash sinks and applicable plumbing). The full value of the upgrades is $307,321 plus taxes. The Regional District proposes to finance $225,278 of this total for the upgrades by borrowing for 20 years. Estimated annual loan payments for the 20-year term will be $14,724.

TAX IMPACTS The proposed borrowing period is 20 years. This expense will result in a tax increase on Residential class properties of approximately $5.68 per $100,000 net taxable value, based on 2017 Converted Completed Roll Values of $25,935,542 for the Texada Medical Clinic. This does not preclude some tax increases for other Texada Medical Clinic expenses. Because the proposed borrowing agreement is for more than five years, the Regional District must obtain the approval of the electors in the Texada Medical Clinic Service Area in accordance with the Alternate Approval Process set out in the Community Charter. Under this process, any eligible elector within the Texada Medical Clinic Service Area who objects to the proposed borrowing agreement may register her/his objection by signing an Elector Response Form and returning it before the May 29, 2017 deadline, as set out below. S K I L L E D S T U D E N T: B r o o k s S e c o n d ar y S c h o o l / Vancouver Island University dual-credit program student Christian Pedersen won a bronze medal in automotive service at a recent Skills Canada provincial competition held in Abbotsford. Two other Powell River students, Kale Wyse, culinary arts, and Maegan Brown, hairdressing, also attended the provincial competition. CONTRIBUTED PHOTO

BECOME A CERTIFIED BEEKEEPER IN 2017 20-hour BCHPA course is a combination of classroom and field instruction. Graduates will have the knowledge and resources to successfully keep bees in coastal British Columbia.

ELECTOR RESPONSE FORMS • Electors wishing to OPPOSE the proposed 20-year borrowing agreement must use the Elector Response Form supplied by the Powell River Regional District. • Copies are available at the Regional District office [address provided below]. • Only one signature is permitted on each form. • It is permissible to make copies of the Elector Response Form to distribute to other electors, provided the form is copied prior to being signed so that only forms with original signatures are submitted. • Only eligible resident and non-resident property electors within the Texada Medical Clinic Service Area are entitled to sign an Elector Response Form. DEADLINE FOR RECEIVING FORMS Elector Response Forms may be submitted in person or by mail to the Corporate Officer, Powell River Regional District, #202 4675 Marine Avenue, Powell River, BC V8A 2L2, and MUST BE RECEIVED AT THE REGIONAL DISTRICT OFFICE NO LATER THAN 4:30 PM, MAY 29, 2017. Postmarks WILL NOT be accepted as date of submission. Forms MAY NOT be submitted by fax or email.

AREA TO WHICH THE ALTERNATE APPROVAL PROCESS APPLIES The Texada Medical Clinic Service Area includes all of Electoral Area D, Texada Island.

DETERMINATION OF RESULTS If, after the deadline, the Regional District Corporate Officer certifies that Elector Response Forms have been signed by less than 10 per cent of the eligible electors in the Texada Medical Clinic Service Area, the Regional District Board may proceed with the borrowing agreement as proposed above. If, after the deadline, the Regional District Corporate Officer certifies that Elector Response Forms have been signed by at least 10 per cent of the eligible electors in the Texada Medical Clinic Service Area, the Regional District Board may not proceed with the borrowing agreement unless it receives elector approval through a voting procedure, i.e., referendum.

For the purposes of this alternate approval process, 111 elector responses must be received by the deadline of 4:30 pm on Monday, May 29, 2017, in order to prevent the Regional District from proceeding with the 20-year loan without first receiving the assent of the electors by voting. ELIGIBLE ELECTORS An eligible resident elector for the purpose of this Alternative Approval Process is a resident who meets all of the following criteria: • is age 18 or older; • is a Canadian citizen; • has been a resident of British Columbia for at least six months; • has been a resident of the Texada Medical Clinic Service Area, for at least 30 days; and, • is not disqualified from voting by the Local Government Act or any other act.

James “Douglas” Holmwood It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of James “Doug” Holmwood. He was born in Powell River on March 6, 1931, to Allan and Marjorie. His father was the first principal of Cranberry Lake School. Doug leaves behind his wife Bunny, sons Scott and Allan, daughter Lee-Ann, and two grandchildren: Christopher and Sarah. Doug spent his working life in the woods on the west coast. There will be no service by request. A family activity will follow.

In memory of John Kenneth Peebles Let’s raise a glass of rum and Pepsi to a cool cat called Jack who touched the hearts of so many with his wit and wisdom. He was born in Vancouver on January 25, 1926, and left us April 5, 2017. He will be deeply missed, not only for how he lived to laugh, but for the way he loved. He will joke on in the memories of his wife, children, nieces and nephews, grandchildren, greatgrandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and many friends. A special thanks to Dr. Rossouw and the wonderful staff at Willingdon Creek Village.

We hope you have found greener fairways; keep riding that lightning until we meet again.

Margaret Mills Margaret passed away peacefully on Easter Sunday, April 16, 2017, at the age of 82 years. She was born on May 24, 1934, in Sudbury, Ontario. In 1974, Margaret moved to Powell River, where she raised her five children and was known and loved by the community. She is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter Linda Young and son-in-law Rockie of Powell River, grandchildren Kiley and Zachary; her daughter Karen Adler and son-in-law Marc of Toronto, grandsons Cole and Taylor; her daughter Natalie Cade and fiancé Thomas Leimer of Vancouver, grandchildren Dakotah (Kendall Richardson) and Dustin (Emily Johnston); and her son Wade Mills and daughter-in-law Kathy of Calgary and granddaughter Presley. She was predeceased by her devoted son Douglas Mills in 2010. Margaret is also survived by her siblings Dorinda Manning, Mildred Payette, Jackie Halonen and Nelda Wachnuk and was predeceased by her siblings Bernice Ball, Maurice John Eno and Jean Eno. Marg was a warm and nurturing person who was dearly loved by everyone who had the good fortune to know her. She was known for her happiness, sweet personality and smile. She will be greatly missed. The family wishes to say a heartfelt thank-you to Dr. Douglas Toole, Dr. Peter Uhlmann, Bonnie Johanson and all of the wonderful caregivers at Willingdon Creek Village and Kiwanis Garden Manor. Please join us for a celebration of life for Marg from 1:30 to 3:30 pm on Saturday, April 22. The event will be held at Shinglemill Pub and Bistro, overlooking beautiful Powell Lake.

Margaret Anastacia Lowther (née McVicker) Margaret passed away peacefully at home in Powell River early on April 12, 2017, after a long illness. She was 71 years old and is survived by her husband Brent, her daughter Denise McCullough (Kevin), her son Daniel Snell, and her sisters and brothers June Doolittle, Barbara Mullis, Richard McVicker, Mary McVicker and George McVicker. She was predeceased by her sister Nancy Pitt and brother Terry McVicker. There was a light in her eyes that told the story of a life lived with loyalty, strength, humour and grace. She was beautiful inside and out. A celebration of Margaret Anne’s life will be held at 1:30 pm on Saturday, April 22, at Powell River Town Centre Hotel. Donate to your favorite charity, in lieu of flowers, please.

Paul Emmanuel Giroday 1964-2017

On April 16, we lost our beloved Paul. He passed away at Powell River General Hospital surrounded by family. Paul was born in Dawson Creek on July 2, 1964, but was a Powell River resident from July 1968 ever after. He was predeceased by his dad Michael (2002) and is survived by his mother Shirley, siblings Lesley (Greg), Ian (Sheryl), Neil, Patrick (Rita) and Robert, and his nephews and niece David, Blair, Daniel, Matt, Nolan and Cara. Paul loved his nephews and niece dearly and they always looked forward to receiving his unique Christmas and birthday gifts. Until the last few years, Paul was a great walker and was seen and well-known around town. He also loved his drives around Powell River with his dad, and in more recent years with his mom and/or siblings. With his passing, the Eagles have lost their greatest fan, and shares in Coca-Cola will dip quite a bit. Paul looked forward to his daily Coke and newspaper. He also liked the occasional Labatt’s Blue. Paul loved rock and roll music and had a vast record collection. He also loved America and often expressed his wish to live in California. He had some great trips to New York City, California and to Aunt Dolly and Uncle Bill’s acreage outside Toronto where he spent many hours “teaching the shickens to crow.” Paul suffered many illnesses and setbacks throughout his life. He endured them with a stoic courage. He spent most of his adult life in community care with Inclusion Powell River (formerly PRACL). Paul’s family is forever grateful for the love and care he received from his caregivers, past and present. A big thank-you as well to doctors Dohm, Burns and Murphy for their care of Paul over the years, and to staff at Powell River, Lions Gate, Vancouver General and St. Paul’s hospitals, where he spent far too much time. To those of you who gave Paul a kind word or gesture over the years, we thank you. A gathering in remembrance of Paul will take place between 1:30-4:30 pm on Friday, May 5, at Jean Pike Centre, 7055 Alberni Street, Powell River. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Inclusion Powell River. Peace, Paul. Take It Easy.

Willingdon Beach Easter egg hunt

2

Hundreds of children waited, some patiently, others barely able to hold back, to swarm over the grass at Willingdon Beach on the Saturday, April 15, for City of Powell River’s annual Easter egg hunt. The Easter bunny was on hand to pose for pictures and when the “ready, set, go” announcement finally came, it was a mad rush for as many coloured eggs as the children could collect in their baskets and turn in for prizes.
