Logger Sports competitors defend titles International and local participants prime their skills for upcoming weekend event Competitors from around the world will descend upon Loggers Memorial Bowl at Willingdon Beach when Powell River Logger Sports returns for its second show since being revived in 2016 after an 11-year absence. From Friday, July 14, through Sunday, July 16, the sport’s top male and female performers will compete in novice, intermediate and open (senior) categories for a total prize purse of more than $80,000. In addition to drawing competitors from as far away as Australia and New Zealand, the show features Germans, Americans and Canadians in more than 30 events with five world and 13 Canadian championships up for grabs. Powell River participants were prominent in 2016, claiming first place in multiple novice and intermediate events, including Canadian championships in Tree Climb (Julian Welp), Axe Throw (Brett Marquis) and Double Buck (Marquis and Jeff Coburn). Coburn also claimed top spot in Obstacle Pole and Allan Knapp finished first in the Chokerman’s Race. All local winners from 2016 are expected to be on hand to defend their titles, as is Tyler Brody, who has already captured a national title in 2017. “Tyler was just at Port McNeill Logger Sports three weeks ago and won the Novice Springboard Chop,” says Powell River Logger Sports vice president Art Lloyd. “They held the Canadian championship there for that event, so he is the Canadian champion this year.”

A group of local competitors formed Powell River Axemen’s club last year. Its members train together and travel to other logger sports shows, which take place in various communities throughout BC during spring and summer months. “Four of them went to Kaslo for an event in May and five or six went to Port McNeill,” says Lloyd. “They are going to Barriere and Chase for two different shows on July 1 weekend, too, so they’ll be ready for our show.” Logger sports shows take place all over North America, says Lloyd, and can keep regular competitors busy every other weekend, if they are so inclined. “If you are competitive you can earn enough winnings to travel, enjoy the show and not have it come out of your pocket,” says TCH

One of the most popular aspects of last year’s show, MacKenzie was a fixture on the logger sports circuit for more than 40 years before retiring in 2013. “We dragged him out of retirement last year and convinced him to come again this year,” says Lloyd. “Getting him back is a coup because nobody else really does it and the crowd loves him, especially the kids.”

Green cleaning Do you lie awake at night wondering if your countertops are covered in a boatload of harmful bacteria? Does the thought of what could be breeding in your dishcloth creep you out? If so, you might be tempted to douse your household with germ-killing cleaners to keep your family safe. But how safe are the products that line our cleaning closets and lurk under kitchen sinks? Some of the most common chemicals used to sanitize our homes include a long list of items that could qualify for a spelling bee: selenium (linked with neurodevelopment damage), butoxyethanol (carcinogenic), phthalates (linked with hormone disruption), triclosan (an antibacterial connected with disrupting thyroid function) and methylisothiazolinone (potentially allergenic when contacting skin). Even so-called green cleaners can be laced with harsh chemicals that are overkill for the common countertop. When it comes to cleaning your home, if you cannot cook with the ingredients in your cleaners, you should probably avoid using them altogether. Most homemade cleaners can be put together from a combination of lemon, baking soda, corn starch, vinegar, aromatic plant oils (like lavender or eucalyptus), salt and olive oil. With these ingredients, everything from all-purpose bathroom cleaners to air freshener and drain cleaner can be made. The bonus of making your own cleaners is less packaging waste. Ingredients can be purchased in bulk and containers from the

LET’S TALK TRASH recycling box can be used to blend them up. To get started, try these green-cleaning methods: • Add orange peels to some vinegar for a grease-cutting glass cleaner. Add two teaspoons of the vinegar to about one litre of water to make it last longer. • Apply baking soda to a damp sponge to remove mould and marks from most surfaces. Repeated applications go the extra mile to reduce staining. • Plenty more recipes can be found online. Rest easier in your naturally sanitized living space knowing the cupboards are no longer filled with a toxic landscape of chemicals. content with myself, but how to be in enjoyment. So, what do you do when you are single? How do you tap into the sweetness of a relationship when not in a relationship?

Spoil yourself

HEART OF THE MATTER By Niseema Emery turn off my phone and really relish the time I was spending solo. I even found myself flirting with people with eye contact and smiles as I walked home along Commercial Drive in Vancouver. I found pleasure, happiness and comfort in exquisite self-love, which is to say, dating myself was a powerful and fulfilling experience; it was illuminating. I finally realized not only what it meant to feel

For some, a solo date night might sound perfect, and for others it might not be their thing. Find something that works. The idea is to treat yourself the way you want to feel, not because you “should,” but because you want to. Personally, I love to feel special, so tapping into flirty energy and treating myself to all my favourite things really makes me feel special.

Find pleasure in your life If pleasure is hard to find, try something new and stop doing things that do not feel good, or at least try doing fewer of the things you “should” do. Pleasure is about being connected to enjoyment, which can mean slowing down and

taking the whole experience in, or saying “no” a bit more often. Something as simple as eating dinner can be a fully pleasurable (and even sensual) experience if time is taken to appreciate the details of the meal: aroma, visual presentation, flavours and textures.

Get your blood pumping Go for a hike, dancing or for a bike ride. Trying something new can have a positive effect due to happy-making endorphins flooding your system. This is a great way to bring some excitement and pleasure back into your life. So, coming back to those people in my life who inspired me, you can definitely romance yourself. In fact, not only are you capable, I hope you will join me in celebrating it. Niseema Emery is a certified intimacy and relationship coach in Powell River.

Last month I wrote about romance and passion as two ways to enjoy showing up in a relationship. Some feedback I received, half jokingly, from some of the single people in my life, was about how they needed to romance themselves because they have no one in their lives to receive romance from. This made me think about being single and how it can feel like romance and passion do not exist unless we are coupled. I cannot accept that. First of all, just because a person happens to be single does not mean they cannot experience the pleasures being in relationship can bring. Regularly taking myself on dates was one of my favourite things to do when I was single. I would spend some time picking fresh flowers for a beautiful bouquet, pick up dinner (and dessert!) from my favourite restaurant, grab a movie,

1105 Obituaries In loving memory of Kenneth Peter Sheldon October 7, 1954 - June 12, 2017 With sadness we mourn the loss of our brother Ken. He is survived by his siblings Tom (Sylvia), Brenda (Glenn), Rick (Marjorie), Frank (Janice), Robyn and Ryan (Elizabeth). Ken was predeceased by his parents Tom and Mary Sheldon. He loved being outdoors and gardening. Love you and miss you. May you be at peace.

Rose Andrews Rose was born on February 4, 1929, and died peacefully in her sleep on June 17, 2017, at Powell River General Hospital. She was predeceased be her husband Russ. Rose is survived by her son Roy (Davina), daughter Ginny (Shawn), son Mike (Laurie), grandchildren Suzanne, April, Corey, Jill, Riley and Nova, and greatgrandchildren Jordan and Mila. Rose enjoyed her sports and volunteered for many years in minor hockey and baseball as her children were growing up. She curled and lawn bowled for many years. Later on in life her passion was playing bridge; she attended many tournaments over the years. The family would like to thank the nurses, hospital staff and doctors on the fourth floor, in the ICU and at Willingdon Creek Village. Also, thank you to Doctor Rossouw, Rose’s family doctor. As per Rose’s wishes, there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Powell River Health-Care Auxiliary would be appreciated.

Aaron Matthew Rushant October 29, 1986 - June 15, 2017

It is with heavy hearts we say good bye to our son, brother and friend. After a year long battle with cancer Aaron slipped away the morning of June 15th with family by his side. Aaron was born and raised in Powell River, BC. When he was 17, he moved to Pemberton, BC, and spent the last 13 years living up and down the sea to sky corridor. Both locations allowed him to indulge his love of sports and outdoor recreation. From snowboarding, climbing, hiking with his dogs to playing soccer, basketball and softball, Aaron was always active and out in the community. His big smile and generous heart will be sorely missed by all his family and friends. Predeceased by his father, Don Rushant. Aaron will be missed by his partner Louise Jeanneau, his mom and stepdad, Peggy (nee Egberts) and Al Lacourciere, sister Joslyn (Steve) McDonald, nephews Archer and Declan, brothers Darcy Rushant and Joel Tait, his housemates Jethro, Angela and Thea and his beloved dogs Dosia and Monkey. He also leaves behind a large extended family of Aunts, Uncles, and cousins as well as many friends. In lieu of flowers, donations to Save Your Skin or BC Cancer Agency would be appreciated. "The heart remembers, one who is loved never dies"

Braxton Rodney Richard Leask June 24, 1996-June 17, 2017

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Braxton Leask. He was just 20 years old when his life was tragically taken from him, alongside his best friend Dylan Buckle. Braxton and Dylan were bright, jubilant individuals who were inseparable as a pair. As avid soccer players they formed tight bonds with their teammates and other community members. Their travels touched lives across multiple countries and continents. We will all miss Braxton’s and Dylan’s exuberance and positivity. They both had many family and friends who all cared for them deeply. Braxton leaves behind his mother Nichelle Guignard (Calvin Hicks), his father Rodney Leask (Jikel Keys), his brothers Kane Leask, Taylor Lance (Ariana Sian) and Calum Leask (Rose-Lynn Wadden), his sister Miranda Leask, and his niece Sophia Spencer. A joint service for Braxton and Dylan will be held at 12:30 pm on Saturday, July 8, at Evergreen Theatre in Powell River Recreation Complex. The family asks that family, friends, and community members pray for Braxton and Dylan – as well as the survivors of this tragedy, and their families. In lieu of flowers the family asks the community to please donate to Powell River Mental Health and Addiction Services.

Andree Bryce McKenzie Andree Bryce McKenzie, born August 11, 1926, on the family farm in Langley, BC, passed away quietly on the evening of May 11, 2017, at Evergreen Care Unit in Powell River. Andree was the youngest of eight children of the late Sven Nordman and Sarah Nisbet. She is survived by her daughter Geri Lee McKenzie of San Diego, sons Neil Bryce McKenzie (Nancy) of Powell River, Scott Christopher McKenzie (Lisa) of Denver and Todd William McKenzie (Janis) of Vancouver, four grandchildren and one great-grandson. Andree received her teaching certificate at Normal School in Victoria, BC, where she met her future husband Kenneth Lee McKenzie. The McKenzie family moved from Victoria to Regina to Winnipeg, and then back to the west coast in North Vancouver. In 1965, Andree and her four children moved to Powell River to be closer to her sister Lillian Gold and she continued her teaching career. She loved being with the youngest children and was a beloved kindergarten and primary grades teacher for many years. Andree had various interests but was well-known for her love of purple. In her late 60s she was reunited with her friend Harvey at their 50th high school reunion. They made a lot of fond memories together with their love of gardening and travelling. Andree was a true lady with the purest of hearts. She will be remembered as an extra special and loving woman, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother and teacher by all who knew her. Thank you to the nurses and staff at Evergreen Care Unit for all your loving care.
