Chairman’s Report 2011 Season 2011 – same old faces, same old results. At least that was the situation in senior football and netball. Albury continued their dominance of senior football with a hard fought victory over a fast finishing Yarrawonga. This was Albury’s third flag in a row and a fitting tribute to coach Paul Spargo. Spargo, who has announced his retirement, is now the most successful O&M coach, with five flags in his locker. In Netball Yarrawonga created their own little piece of history by becoming the first team to win three “A” Grade premierships in a row. They only lost one game during the season and the Grand Final result was a fitting reflection of their performances during the year. The Morris Medal was a close result with Albury’s Shaun Daly taking out the league’s best and fairest in a thriller from teammate Chris Hyde. Albury’s Matt Fowler made it an extra special evening for Albury by winning the Doug Strang Medal as leading goalkicker. Cousins Sara Wollington from Yarrawonga and Lavington’s Sarah Senini were joint winners of the Tony Wilson Medal in “A” Grade Netball. Our interleague campaign once again came to nought. The game against Mornington Peninsula was one of the highest standard games witnessed in the Championships for some time. Unfortunately for the O & M a heartbreaking loss by 3 points means we drop down the VCFL rankings further. A bitter pill for a proud League. While it was disappointment in the senior ranks, the under 18’s hung on for a brave victory. I would like to thank the coaches and all the support staff involved in the interleague campaign. Aaron McGlynn as Operations Officer and General Manager Tom O’Connor have once again been a tower of strength for the League. The smooth running of all things football and netball this season is a compliment to these two hard working gentlemen. The Morris Medal and Hall of Fame functions were once again an outstanding success. The Morris Medal “Red Carpet” Parade is fast becoming one of the social events of the region. I would like to thank the clubs for their continued support of both events. Without this support, the enjoyment and success of the each night cannot be guaranteed. The SS&A O&M continues to enjoy ongoing support from a large group of business partners. I would like to thank all of the following for their contribution to the League, • SS&A Club, • Trotman Accountants • KFC • Jacob Toyota • Roadsafe North East • Prime7 • Commonwealth Bank • 1494 2AY • Coca-Cola • Generations Personal and Professional Advice • Bevmarks • Jayco Albury-Wodonga • GoTafe • Dysons Buses • Qantaslink
• Morris Wines • NAK Hairware • Health Focus • Burley Sekem • Victor Sports • Lyon Sportswear • RPH I must also thank each and every club that makes up the SS&A Ovens & Murray and the tireless work club Presidents, committees and volunteers put in on a week to week basis. Volunteers are the life blood of our clubs, a fact that should never be forgotten. To my fellow board members, may I thank you once again for your ongoing support. Country football is entering some challenging times. The recently released Jackson Report into country football contains many recommendations which will have a significant impact on the administration of the game. As I put pen to paper today, it is too early to make a judgement on how the recommendations contained in the Report will affect the O & M. Suffice to say, the Board of the O&MFNL will be in there to achieve the best outcome for our League. It is a very much “watch this space” for season 2012. Greg Claney Chairman SS&A OMFNL

General Manager’s Report 2011 As the curtain falls on the 2011 year, it is a good opportunity to reflect on the last 12 months of the SS&A Ovens & Murray Football Netball year. The financial performance of the League is once again solid. The company reported a profit of$8,563.00, in a year where the it distributed $15,277.00 in finals rebates, $3,605.00 in medical bonuses and $5,136.00 in awards. Over $24,000.00 was directed straight back into strengthening and supporting clubs. The strength of the League can be driven by the support it receives from its 10 affiliate clubs for the League preferred suppliers in 2011. I refer you to table 1 which displays the clubs who supported the League suppliers: Jumper suppliers, Lyon Sportswear, and RPH and medical / tape supplier, Victor Sports. Thank you to the clubs that supported the League suppliers in 2011. The League strengthened its administration management by recruiting the Albury Wodonga Junior Football League and the North East Umpires Board into O&M house. The league has a vested interest in both organisations being run professionally and is pleased to report that both organisations have had profitable years under the administration of the OMFNL. As a major League in Country Victoria, you strive to lead and be at the forefront of country football and netball. In 2011 I believe the League led a number of initiatives that place it ahead of the rest: Videoing all bar one senior game in 2011 was a great operational achievement for the League. The education resource it provides clubs and coaches is invaluable and will only evolve as the League and clubs utilise it to full potential; Leading country football technology by texting game results for senior football and A grade at their completion. This technology evolved during the finals where the league brought the community ‘live scores’, goal by goal, point by point for all senior finals through the League’s iphone application and streamed on Twitter. While this is not uncommon technology at AFL level, it is certainly ground breaking for country football. 2012 should see this technology evolve further. In addition to the above. the League continued to grow in 2011 with a number of exciting projects, announcements and achievements taking place: Highlights of 2011 through the GM’s desk • Lavington v Albury, Round one football - show piece football. 6 games of football and 3 netball; • Corowa v Yarrawonga - four games of football on one day; • Myrtleford breaking through for their first senior win in 3 years; • 2011 SS&A Ovens & Murray Grand Final Day; • The introductory of Prime 7s Daniel Gibson to the MC of the Morris Medal; • 2011 Hall of Fame Dinner; • 2011 Morris Medal evening; • 2011 Grand Final Parade; • Administration of the Albury Wodonga Junior Football League; • Administration of the North East Umpires Board; • Investigation into a 4th grade of football in the Ovens & Murray. As indicated above, there is some fantastic work being completed at Club level. The entertainment dollar is

becoming increasingly harder to attract and clubs that are taking the initiative to try new and innovative ways to expose more people to SS&A O&M football and netball are to be commended. The focus of the League earlier in the year was playing ‘Live, local, SS&A Ovens & Murray’. The target of this campaign was to use the players of the Leagues as the show piece of the competition. A special thank you must be extended to Neal Kelly (Parkway Productions), Aaron Weathers (Arrow) and Tara Ashworth (Border Mail) for their expertise and creativity in assisting the League. Also, thanks to our media partners in Prime 7, Radio 2AY and the Border Mail. Additionally, the League thanks its numerous media partners in WIN TV, 3NE, ABC, Oak FM, Wangaratta Chronicle and Mid Week Xpress in providing fantastic media coverage to the League. Once again the League sponsors and partners united behind the competition in 2011. Sponsorship for the season is up by 24% with the introduction of Dyson Group of Companies, Go Tafe, Ultra Tune, RPH and Health Focus to the Ovens & Murray community. The League trusts the new partners enjoyed their year in the competition. The association with the SS&A Club still remains the premier partnership in Country football. The League is thankful to the to club President Eddie Dunlop and CEO Tim Levesque for the 12 month extension into 2012 and looks forward to continuing its great partnership with the Club and developing it further beyond 2012. To our other sponsors and supply partners of Trotman Accountants, KFC, Jacob Toyota, Prime TV, Jayco Albury Wodonga, Bev Marks, Generations, Personal & Professional Advice, 2AY, QantasLink, Morris Wines, Commonwealth Bank, Coca Cola, Victor Sports, Lyon sportswear, Burley Sekem - thank you. The official League functions were once again well supported by affiliate clubs. 261 people attended the Hall of Fame function and witnessed Frank Hodgkin (Myrtleford, Rutherglen, North Albury & Wodonga), Mick Bone (Wodonga), Darryl Smith (Wangaratta Rovers), Jeff Hemphill (Wangaratta Magpies) and the late Kevin Smith (Myrtleford) all inducted. Special thanks to Ron Montgomery, the Hall of Fame committee and MC on the night Phil Nolan for their contribution to this great event. A record 334 attended the Morris Medal evening and saw Shaun Daly (Albury) take out the Morris Medal. Sarah Wollington (Yarrawonga) and Sarah Senini (Lavington) tied for the Toni Wilson Medal while Lavington youngster Nico Sedgwick and North Albury Jess Fisher-Curnow won the SS&A Rising and Diamond Star of the Year awards respectively. In concluding, I would like to extend a special thank you to Aaron McGlynn, the Operations Officer for the SS&A O&M League. Aaron has grown into the operations role and led all clubs who sought his support in a professional and articulate manner. The operations of the League endured change in season 2011 with new operation systems implemented. Aaron is to be congratulated on the work undertaken to ensure a smooth transition to new processes. Thank you to the tireless volunteers that assist the League annually with representative football and netball, the league tribunal, gate dragons, Hall of Fame, Morris Medal and League events. continued...

General Manager’s Report 2011 cont. To the netball executive of Paula Cary, Kim Odewhan, Kath Dobson, Toni Wilson, Marion Patterson and Tamara Mathews, well done again on running a tight ship at finals and we all look forward to the introduction of 16 and under in 2012. Thank you to the Board Chairman Greg Claney, Vice Chairman Graeme Patterson and all Board members for their support and vision for Ovens & Murray Football and Netball. The League is very fortunate to have a very experienced and professional board who volunteer their time to lead the SS&A Ovens & Murray Football Netball League. Table 1. Operation’s Report 2011 2011 was a season with a number of major operational changes. At the forefront of this was the move to online team selection and the implementation of the new team sheet and score sheet structure. Without doubt, there were a number of teething issues early in the piece but the feedback from clubs following the season proved he changes are the way forward. I have to thank the numerous club staff and volunteers who made this process a positive step. Your work on a week to week basis and dedication to getting the job done is a credit to all 10 clubs. Player and official registrations also moved to a 100% online process. Again clubs dealt with this change with extreme professionalism and any issues were kept to a minimum fuss. There is no denying there are numerous challenges faced in terms of the amount of operational work for clubs that goes on behind the scenes. It is the goal to ensure this is kept to a minimum and the best way to ensure this is to keep with the times. While change can cause initial heartache in the long run it is for the betterment of the league. The SS&A Ovens and Murray Football Netball League will continue to look forward to the future and utilise technology and new initiatives to improve and grow our competition. With 2011 behind us it’s inevitable we look towards the future, preparations for 2012 are already in full swing. Keeping with the times the SS&A OMFNL has undertaken a complete overhaul of the league constitution and bylaws. This has proved an arduous task but the expertise of board members Gavin Cator and especially David Koschitzke has ensured a more professional document will be in circulation from 2012. The changes will streamline and simplify and make what can be a confusing piece of literature more user friendly.
Permits are a perennial issue amongst the football community. VCFL North East Area Manager John O’Donohue along with assistance from associated leagues including the SS&A OMFNL are working to overhaul the permit structure by the start of the 2012 system. This season there were several noted issues with the current permit agreements, a more universal method is planned for the upcoming season. This will mean a set agreement across all leagues with the flexibility of special considerations where required. I have no doubt this will make things simpler for leagues, simpler for clubs and more importantly simpler for volunteers. As always the prospect of a new season sparks excitement and anticipation, season 2012 will be no different but before we leave 2011 behind it would be remiss of me not to thank a number of people. This season the league put in an audacious plan to film every single senior match of the 2011 competition. Out of 96 games of football we missed half a match. That superb record was in no small part to the talented and hard working group of cameraman that came on board. So to Adrian Bennett, Travis Cartwright, Peter Colwell, Wayne Dear and Mark Duncan a big thank you. To our group of tireless tribunal panel members lead by chairman David Iverson and secretary Neil Murray. This group of gentleman do an invaluable service for the league and it is greatly appreciated. Lastly to the SS&A OMFNL board, thank you for their assistance, skills, experience and knowledge and to general manager Tom O’Connor who’s passion and dedication to the league continues to ensure the SS&A OMFNL is headed in the right direction. The U18s achieved a good win against their opponents, after kicking away in the first quarter and scoring six gaols to one. The first quarter margin was enough lead resulting in a 9-9 to 6-12 victory. The game was played at a fast pace with the O&M bigger bodied players and senior experience holding sway. Better players for the O&M were Luke McNeil, Nathan Rhodes & Lee Dale. What a difference 2 points and 20 seconds of football makes. Following a narrow loss the previous year to the GVFL, we travelled to Frankston ranked 3rd playing The Sharks ranked 4th. A loss would see us slip to 5th ranked overall or a win going back up to 2nd. After being behind all match, O&M hit the front twice in the last term, only to be beaten by a running goal with 20 seconds to go. The MPNFL Sharks had great use of the ball in the first quarter with the breeze and had 10 scoring shots to 5. They maintained a narrow lead most of the match and proved a formidable opposition. The final score was 13-15 to 13.13 with better players being Michael Stevens, Scott Meyer, Matt Pendergast, Luke Packer, Jake Spiteri and Daniel Boyle. Congratulation to those players selected from the game that represented the VCFL at both senior and junior levels against the amateurs. On behalf of the Board of management of the OMFNL, thank you to all clubs for the excellent support provided to the campaign. Appreciation and thanks also go to all coaching, support staff and particularly the players who willingly made themselves available and represented their clubs and league with professionalism. The board recognise the contribution made by the Operations Manager Aaron McGlynn and General Manager Tom O’Connor. Thanks to the various media outlets for ongoing support to football and netball and the extensive coverage we received. The game this year was telecast on the intranet and from all reports was considered an outstanding game to trial under the new technology. Congratulations and thanks to the VCFL major sponsors Worksafe Victoria, our local sponsors in SS&A, Road Safe NE, Trotman Accountants, KFC, Prime TV, Coca Cola, Jayco, Qantas Link, Health Focus, Victor Sports, 1494 2AY, Jacob Toyota, Bev Marks and Generations Personal & Professional Advice.

The League also recognises the efforts of the Board Members of the MPNFL & VCFL in conducting a successful match. It is anticipated that in 2012 the OMFNL will play Hampden in a 5th Vs 6th ranking match. Graeme Patterson Vice Chairman & Interleague Director SS&A OMFNL

2011 saw the Ovens & Murray Football Netball Open & under 17 Representative Netball teams experience further success in both grades. Such was the talent within the league, two O&M 17 & under teams were selected for the first time to compete in the North east Zone tournament; whereby both progressed through to the final to play against each other. This was an outstanding effort by everyone involved, and highlights the depth of talent within the league. From this tournament both the 17 & Under team and the Open team progressed through to Melbourne to the Association Championships. The Under 17 teams were once again coached by Paula Cary and assisted by Tamara Mathews. It brought together a large and very talented group of players who represented the O&M league with great enthusiasm. Both teams competed at the North East tournament in Yarrawonga; it was here that the O&M established their dominance of the region by finishing first and second on the day. As only one team were allowed to progress to Melbourne the coaches had the difficult task of reducing the squad to one team. This team unfortunately bowed out in the Semi Finals to the eventual winner in Geelong. The Most Valuable Player Award for the Under 17’s team for 2011 went to Gemma Grimmond. The Open side was once again coached by Fiona Boyer & ably assisted by Kylie Tyrell who was a late withdrawal from the team with her second knee injury. The team welcomed several first time O&M representatives this year; and yet again established an exceptionally talented side, made up of the best players in the league. The side progressed straight through to the Association Championships in Melbourne, where they played outstanding netball over the course of the day. For the
fourth year running the girls played off in the Grand Final, however they were unfortunately beaten by an outstanding Geelong side. The Most Valuable Player Award for the Open team was Sarah Meredith. Congratulations to all the players and officials who represented the Ovens & Murray Football Netball League in 2011. It was yet again another example of the hard work, determination, and commitment so many contribute towards the league. Thankyou to the clubs who supported representative netball in 2011, and who continued to encourage their players to take part in it. A sincere thankyou to the following people who were part of the representative campaign – Fiona Boyer, Kylie Tyrell, Paula Cary and Tamara Mathews for coaching; Kim Odewahn, and Marian Patterson for managing the teams; Steve Senini for providing first aide; Kelly Reaburn, Geoff Mallows & Jarrod Hibberson for umpiring; Tom O’Connor and Aaron McGlynn for organising and supplying food and drink, and for videoing the games; the local media outlets for their ongoing reporting and exposure of O&M netball; and the O&M Board for their continued support of representative netball. Without the hard work and assistance provided by all of these people the league would not experience the success that it does year after year. Once again the league is very proud of the achievements of 2011, and looks forward to ongoing success in 2012. Tamara Mathews Interleague Netball Co-ordinator SS&A O&MFNL
