Hotel Sorrento for Allegro Theatre Company The Allegro Theatre Company’s first production for 2011 is Hotel Sorrento by Australian playwright Hannie Rayson.
W
ith a cast of nine performers, the play will enfold the audience into Australian seaside family life where tragedy and hilarity abound with equal measure. Actors include Luke Doyle who recently received the Allegro Theatre Company’s $1,000 Arts Scholarship and Barb Macdermid and John Halfpenny who are making a welcome return to the Allegro Theatre Company family. Julie McBurnie, who played the Grand High Witch in the successful Roald Dahl play Witches, will portray Hilary with Loretta Wood and Mary Harmer (both seasoned Allegro performers) playing Hilary’s sisters. Steve Cole, Yarrawonga College P-12s dramatic arts teacher, plays protagonist Dick and Wangaratta acting veteran Steve Thornycroft plays the English husband of Meg. Finishing up the cast, newcomer Shaun Tanner plays the small but pivotal role of the ‘auctioneer’. Hotel Sorrento’s story centres on the main characters of Meg, Pippa and Hillary Moynihan, Barb Macdermid and Julie McBurnie at rehearsals for the Allegro Theatre Company production of Hotel who are sisters that grew up in Sorrento, a small Sorrento.
seaside town in Victoria. Meg, who has lived in England for 10 years, has just written a critically acclaimed novel which she claims is entirely fictional. The book causes a stir in Sorrento and in her family when it is suspected that the book is not as fictional as she attests. The play’s author, Hannie Rayson, was born in Melbourne and graduated from the University of Melbourne and the Victorian College of Arts. Recognised as one of Australia's most significant playwrights, Rayson's first major success was Hotel Sorrento, which won several prizes including the Australian Writers Guild Award. The play has become an Australian classic, regularly performed by regional theatre groups, and appearing in university courses and on the high school syllabus. The film of the play, directed by Richard Franklin, won an AFI Award for best screenplay; in 2010 the play's London debut won critical acclaim. Hotel Sorrento will be performed at the Yarrawonga Town Hall on April 30, May 1, 5, 6 and 7. There will be a final performance at the Wilby Hall on May 14 with proceeds of this performance going to the Wilby Hall fund. Bookings can be made at the Yarrawonga Visitor Information Centre with tickets $25 per person or $20 concession.

The 2011 Corowa Cup to be on Sunday, March 13 should be one of the best cup meetings seen for a long time according to Corowa Race Club President Gary Poidevin.
Pictured is Corowa Race Club President Gary Poidevin, holding photographs of past winners at Corowa. He is hoping for a big crowd at the Corowa Cup.
”
The Corowa Sunday TAB Meeting looks like it will be run in magnificent weather and will be a great opportunity for horses as a lead-up to the Albury Cup Carnival 12 days later,” Corowa Race Club President Gary Poidevin said. “Because of the heavy rain throughout the district, it has been hard for owners and trainers to get a good gauge on the
performances of their horses.” But improved racing conditions with more recent fine, sunny days will make for a great day out for all ages of people, for this year’s eight-race TAB program. “Our meeting is a great day out with the President’s Marquee, for members and regular racegoers to enjoy a great day of fun and racing,” Mr Poidevin said. “We have over $90,000 in prize-money and lots for the kids to do as well. “I thank all the sponsors for coming on board to make this a special day and we have renowned novelist Keith Rays as a special guest.” Bookings (0459 267 692) are required for the President’s Marquee which holds about 115 people. * Woods Buslines departs for Corowa Race Club from the Yarrawonga Shire Hall at 11.30am and from Mulwala Post Office at 11.40am. $30 cost per person includes entry to cup.
