REMOVAL OF UNWANTED FRUIT TREES IN COROWA, HOWLONG AND MULWALA Corowa Shire will be commencing a free fruit tree removal program from the 5 November 2012, which will assist with the reduction of Queensland Fruit Fly (QFF) in Corowa, Howlong and Mulwala. Landowners/Residents who wish to have their fruit trees removed are urged to contact Council at the Corowa office, Howlong Resource Centre, or Mulwala Civic Centre and complete a consent form, to be included in the program. In order to break the QFF lifecycle, Landowners/Residents are advised to remove all excess ripe fruit from their trees, as well as collecting all fallen fruit, and heat treat the fruit in a sealed plastic bag which will destroy any QFF maggots. The fruit can then be b disposed in the normal rubbish. Vegetables affected by QFF should be collected and treated by the same method. Do not compost excess or infected fruit and vegetables. Information relating to QFF can be obtained from Council’s offices in the three towns or from the NSW DPI website www.dpi.nsw. gov.au/factsheets. For further information please contact Ian Singleton on 02 60338952. SLASHING OF VACANT BLOCKS Due to recent favourable weather conditions, Council has carried out inspections of urban areas for overgrown vegetation on both vacant properties and properties with dwellings. Letters have been sent to the owners of properties which contain overgrown vegetation requesting slashing/removal of the vegetation by the 25 October 2012 after which time a second inspection will be carried out. Property owners who have not complied with the initial letter will be sent a notice under Council’s Local Orders Policy. GRASS SLASHING OF LANEWAYS To enable Council to safely slash vegetation along residential laneways, residents are requested to clear the laneways of any materials at the rear of their properties that may obstruct or cause damage to the slasher or fences. Laneways will not be slashed where an obstruction occurs. Please ensure that trees overhanging the laneway from your property are trimmed to allow slashing along fence line. Regular inspections will be carried out of urban laneways and notices will be sent to property owners not complying with Council’s request. TREE TRIMMING Property owners are reminded that paths and lines of sight be clear of trees and shrubs to minimise the risk of injury to footpath and road users due to the obstruction presented by intrusive vegetation. It is the responsibility of property owners to: (i) Trim back to the building line and to the height of 2.5 metres all shrubs and trees on their property encroaching on and overhanging footpaths. (ii) Remove low branches of trees and whole shrubs growing on their property, which are obstructing the line of sight of turning vehicles. (iii) In the event the responsible person is not able to comply with this request, Council may be contacted to carry out the required works, at the cost of the property owner. Council is currently carrying out inspections of footpaths in Corowa, Mulwala and Howlong and seeks your co-operation in this matter.

GOLF

Local golfer stars on international stage By Fiona Blick

From humble beginnings, former local Andrew Argus has reached international stardom through his love of golf.

Argus recently triumphed at the Asian Senior Masters, finishing six under par and winning by four shots at The Mines Resort in Malaysia. Argus told the Yarrawonga Chronicle his success in the event was a complete surprise. “I haven’t really played any competitive golf over the last three years, concentrating instead on teaching,” he said. “I

started to play golf in Yarrawonga in 1969 so have been playing for 43 years now. I won the Victorian School Boys Championship and started my apprenticeship at Cobram/Barooga under Peter Harvey, my second year under Phillip Droop at Yarrawonga and my final year under Brian Barugh in Melbourne.” Argus turned professional in 1980. “I started playing professional events at that time and my first professional win was the Border Open Championship in Barham. I have had another 30 professional wins in Victoria, NSW, Queensland, Tasmania,

NT, SA, Fiji, Singapore and Malaysia,” he said. After playing with and competing against the likes of Greg Norman, Bernhad Langer, Seve Ballasteros he moved from competing to concentrate on his professional teaching career. “I have a doctorate majoring in The Golfing Machine, a teaching methodology which focuses on geometry and physics and how this applies to golf. It is a more scientific way of teaching,” he said. “I have been the head of education in Asia for Henry Griffiths Club Fitting and have a Masters degree in club fitting, was the national coach

of Malaysia for 11 years and have worked with several of the world’s leading coaches including Tom Tomesello, Dr Gary Wiren and Mike Bender.” Argus has developed his own elite golfing school, Impact Elite Golf Academy, based in Malaysia and specialises in training programs for elite players including national players and touring professionals. “One of our students, Stacy Keating, just won the Spanish Open on the Ladies European tour last weekend,” Argus said. “We focus on biomechanics, physical programs, psychology for

golf, equipment preparations, goal setting and achieving long term improvement programs.” As well as teaching and competing, Argus has also been a commentator for European tour productions, had his own golf series on television, a radio show (Eagles Nest) and was a staff member for several golf publications throughout south east Asia. The Mines Golf Resort where Argus’ Impact Elite Golf Academy is located hosts a US tour event, the CIMB classic, every year and it is on again from October 25 to Andrew Argus with his Asian Senior Masters trophy. 28 this year.
