DSE
NE planned burning program The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) has released the details of planned burns and other fire prevention activities intended for the north east region during the next three years.
DSE North East Land and Fire, Regional Manager, Alan Dobson, said the Fire Operations Plans have been finalised after DSE and Parks Victoria reviewed feedback from communities and stakeholders on the draft plans. “The Fire Operations Plans outline where planned burns, slashing, track works and construction of fire breaks are intended to be carried out over the next three years, depending on weather and other conditions,” Mr Dobson said. “Each year we talk to communities and a range of stake-
holders to update the plans with the latest local information.” Across the north east region DSE has met with the community and stakeholder groups to ensure local knowledge is included in the planning phase. “Reducing the potential impacts on communities and businesses is an important part of the planning process and DSE has made changes to the plans where these changes will not impact on the primary goal of reducing risk to communities,” he said. “Ultimately the decision to burn is driven by the need to reduce bushfire risk to human life, communities, essential and community infrastructure, industry, the economy and the environment.” Mr Dobson said planned burns can only be carried
out with the right conditions. “The plans are designed to be flexible so burns can be moved forward or back over the threeyear period to respond to weather and other conditions. The 2012-13 planned burning program for north east region is 67,700 hectares,” he said. “This includes burns near communities which will help protect homes, properties and other assets, as well as burns in more remote areas of forest which reduce the size and intensity of future bushfires.” The Fire Operations Plans can be viewed online at www.dse.vic. gov.au/burnsor at local DSE and DSE has finalised its three year fire operation plan which details where fire prevention works on public land will be undertaken across the north east region.
