The interactive display aims to educate people that not all snakes are dangerous and venomous snakes do not ‘eat’ humans. They may bite if scared or cornered. Animals included are baby, medium and large pythons, turtles, frog (not a reptile, but everyone loves ‘Freddo’), various lizards and a baby saltwater crocodile. Dale Grey, the popular cropping agronomist based at the DPI at Cobram will be available from 12.30 to 3.30 pm, at the rural Landcare groups’ display at the Yarrawonga and Mulwala District Show this Saturday, October 2. Dale will provide information and answer questions about plague locusts and the government’s program to minimise their impact as well as questions on cropping or weeds. Plague locusts are fascinating insects and the more people know about them, the more likely
they are able to be controlled. They started hatching at Mildura on September 19 and are due to start hatching around Yarrawonga on October 20. Dale does says that can change depending on the temperature. “Eggs due to hatch this spring were laid in autumn,” Dale said. “In cooler weather they remain in the soil in a state of diapause. Plague locusts usually have five growth stages and it’s really important to spray them in their second or third stages.” The three local rural Landcare groups supporting the display are
South Yarrawonga, Burramine-Tungamah and Peechelba- Boomahnoomoonah-Wilby. Landcare are also encouraging you to dig up your weeds. If you have a weed that you can’t identify, or want to know more about, please dig it up and bring it along for identification and advice. Some free books on weeds will be available. Thanks to a grant from Moira shire the local rural Landcare groups have once again arranged for Roaming Reptiles to be at the Show. This petting zoo of reptiles which includes a small crocodile, cute
lizards and some venomless snakes is always very popular with children. Find Roaming Reptiles, Dale Grey and

WOOL
Spring show wool show The Yarrawonga Lions are currently working hard to put together a special wool display at the Yarrawonga-Mulwala Agriculture Show on October 2.
All sheep farmers on properties surrounding Yarrawonga and Mulwala should have received a letter (and wool bag) inviting them to donate a fleece to this year’s wool display. The Lions members have been very grateful for the continued generosity and long time support of many of the local farmers over several years now, and they look forward to their support again this year. All fleeces entered in the display are sold after the wool show and all the proceeds are going to be donated to the Respite House this year. There are lots of prizes and ribbons to be won, with these being presented to the various winners at 3pm in the “Wool Shed” at the show grounds.
The Yarrawonga Lions members would like to thank Permewans and Elders VP for their generous and continued support of the Wool Show in donating all the trophies. Also thank you to Landmark for providing this year’s judge. The Lions members look forward to a successful Wool Show again this year, with fleeces already arriving, and they look forward to the continued support of the community. Fleeces can be delivered to Elders VP main office or to the Elders Wool store any time prior to October 1. Judging will take place on Friday October 1. If you are new to the area, or didn’t receive a letter and wool bag in the mail, and you have a fleece to enter please contact either of the Wool Show Chairmen, Rob Glover on 57443032, or Andrew Toms on 57458269 for entry details and any other information in regard to the Wool Show.
President of the Lions Club Max Austin, Neil Povey and Jock Toms prepare for the show.

New sheep pens will be a highlight of this year’s sheep events The Thom Pavilion will feature sheep from properties across the district and from further afield with strong numbers of entries expected in all classes.
Many exhibitors have been attending for decades and others exhibit through the school system and then continue to show their sheep after completing their educational years. All look forward to the annual event. Head steward Stuart McPherson said the sheep numbers and the high standard of the ex-
hibits are a credit to their dedicated owners. The Show Committee has been successful in applying for a $12,000 community grant from the Moira Shire Council to purchase new sheep pens, to better accommodate the sheep and to meet the sheep health regulations. The pens will hopefully be installed prior to this year’s show. Trade and stud sheep will be judged in a variety of events as well as junior sheep handling and there will be the popular wool display presented by the Yarrawonga Lions Club.
Most Valuable Fleece in 2009 – Graham Sampson (Tungamah).
Entrants of all ages will bring their sheep along for judging.

Moira Shire Councillor and life member of the Show committee, Brian Keenan, is busily preparing four sulkies to be used in the races. Teams of two contestants will pit their athletic and balancing wits against each other for their chance to be crowned sovereigns of the Spring Show Sulky Races. Held over 200m, in the first 100m one person will pull the sulky while the second person rides along, then in the second 100m the competitors will swap positions.
Keenan said. “I think the power to weight ratio could prove to be significant and in the interests of Occupational Health and Safety if whips are used then RSPCA guidelines must be observed.” Cr Keenan said he was thinking of something different for the Show to offer and came up with the idea of the Sulky races. The races will be run on the Friday night then again on the Saturday. “Anyone can enter – male, female, combined, children – we will

Riders have to separate three identified cows from the main mob and take them to a pen at the other end of the arena. Cows in groups of three will have the same ‘colour’ marking among 9 other trios of different colours with a judge nominating what colour cows have to be separated by each rider.
