All about the music Jimmy Barnes is a man of contradictions.

T

he majority of us would see him as a screaming rock god belting out his hits during 30 years of performing. An inner circle would see him as a dedicated family man who has passed his love of music onto his children. Very few would associate Barnes as a person studying poetry at a prestigious music college in the USA, but that is precisely what he has returned to Australia from doing. “My son just graduated from the Berklee College of Music in Boston and has got a gig travelling on a world tour with the Ten Tenors,” Barnes told the Chronicle in a recent interview. “While he was there I thought I would also attend and do something I have always wanted to do, study poetry and how it is used in music. It was a wonderful opportunity for me because I

Ian Moss.

was asked to teach as well. I had a group of young musicians and I helped them develop a rock band and it was a real thrill to help get their skills up and happening. Studying was quite hard, it was the first time I had been back at school since I was 16 so that was very challenging.” Barnes will be the headline act at the upcoming Red Hot Summer Tour at the Mulwala Water Ski Club and said he loves performing at these festivals because the crowd is incredibly receptive. “There is a wonderful mix of country folk and city people who have escaped the hustle and bustle and are on holidays; they all let their hair down,” he said. “As well as this there are parents introducing their children to music they grew up with so there is just a great vibe. All the bands complement each other and they are a really nice bunch of people; all incredibly talented musicians.” Barnes said he will be performing all his hits and is looking forward to the possibility of performing with fellow tour member and former Cold Chisel band mate Ian Moss. “There is a 90% chance of a collaboration on the night, we really can’t help ourselves, we love playing together,” he said. “Moss is a fantastic musician and songwriter and it will be a privilege to tour alongside him again.” Jimmy Barnes will be appearing at the Mulwala Water Ski Club’s Red Hot Summer Tour with The Baby Animals, Ian Moss, Chocolate Starfish and Dragon on Saturday, January 19. This will be a sell out so book early. Tickets start from $79.90 (+BF) and are available from Ticketmaster 136 100, www.ticketmaster.com.au and Mulwala Waterski Club (03) 5744 1888, www.mulwalawaterski.com. au.

Jon Stevens returns to the Ski Club DEC 28 Popular rocker Jon Stevens and his band returns to the Mulwala Water Ski Club on Friday, December 28 .

S

tevens has been a regular performer in the region supporting acts such as Jimmy Barnes on the Red Hot Summer Tour, headlining on his own or with his band.

Stevens can rock with the best of them as well perform classic blues and soul numbers as shown on his latest album Testify, released in November last year. Stevens also received critical acclaim for his performance as Judas in two productions of Jesus Christ Superstar. Don't miss Jon Stevens and his band, live and free at the Mulwala Water Ski Club on December 28.

The unique Diesel - the Kate Miller-Heidke velvet curtain tour FEB 2

We all know her voice by now.

With a career spanning 25 years (35 singles, 13 albums, 6 ARIA awards) and record sales edging 1 million, Diesel, the journeyman of music, is on his way to Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre on February 21, 2013, as part of The Velvet Curtain Tour.

W

DECEMBER

ithout question, Kate Miller– Heidke has some of the most gloriously elastic vocal chords in contemporary music. In one song, she will sound as hushed and intimate as a lover before sleep, before reverberating with an operatic force so great, it seems possible walls might collapse and time will fold in on itself. Across the Pacific and Atlantic—from Australia to Asia, the US and UK—stunned audiences have been mesmerised and transformed, one at a time, by the extraordinary talent that is Kate Miller-Heidke. Now, following double-platinum sales for her last album (2008’s Curiouser), sets at Coachella, international dates supporting Ben Folds, acclaimed opera performances in Australia and the UK, and catching US critics—from the New York Times to the New Yorker—off-guard, Kate Miller-Heidke returns with Nightflight, her first solo album in three years. Over 11 songs, Nightflight signals a newfound sophistication in songwriting that sees Kate meditate on homesickness, mortality, love and surrender, in an album that is both sonically lush and emotionally stark, deeply personal and yet utterly panoramic. Kate will be performing at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre on February 2. For tickets contact the box office on 03 57228105, between 10am-4pm Monday-Friday, 33 - 37 Ford Street, Wangaratta.

ith blues music in his “DNA”, an influence largely from his father’s record collection, Diesel has blended all styles to come up with a truly unique sound, punctuated with his distinct guitar playing and vocals. Rewind to 2005… ‘Singled Out’ is released - a solo live recording which is the catalyst for Diesel embarking on a juggernaut solo tour, a tour that will establish him as a solo performer. Eight years on and Diesel has evolved into a solo artist of great diversity. Alongside the hits and rarities people have grown to expect from an artist of longevity, Diesel blends his influences by also playing tracks from Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Neil Young (to name a few) combined with the unique ‘theatre’ environment, it makes for an all encompassing musical experience. All tickets $55. Contact the box office on 03 57228105, between 10am-4pm MondayFriday, 33 - 37 Ford Street, Wangaratta.
