ith blues music in his “DNA”, an influence largely from his father’s record collection, Diesel has blended all styles to come up with a truly unique sound, punctuated with his distinct guitar playing and vocals. Rewind to 2005… ‘Singled Out’ is released - a solo live recording which is the catalyst for Diesel embarking
on a juggernaut solo tour, a tour that will establish him as a solo performer. Eight years on and Diesel has evolved into a solo artist of great diversity. Alongside the hits and rarities people have grown to expect from an artist of longevity, Diesel blends his influences by also playing tracks from Jimi Hendrix, Otis Redding, Neil Young
Steinway on Stage - featuring Emili Rackemann Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre and Wangaratta Arts Council Inc are pleased to present the intimate twilight concerts series of Steinway on Stage with concert pianists playing the Rural City of Wangaratta’s magnificent grand piano on the stage of the Alpine MDF Theatre.

mili Rackemann will perform on Wednesday, December 12 from 6:00pm – 7:00pm. Emili has been immersed in music since her childhood on a remote cattle station in Queensland. She developed an inquisitiveness towards the piano at age four and began composing at age 13. Later she studied at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music. Emili traces her musical lineage to William Rackemann, renowned for exquisite performances of Beethoven’s
work while touring with Clara Schumann in Germany and New York in the late 1800s. With three albums and more than 50 compositions for solo and duo piano, Emili herself will head to New York early next year for a series of intimate recitals of her work. Emili’s compositions are a blend storytelling and visualisations. She describes her work as ‘classical rehashed and reformed’. Whilst fond of Rachmaninoff, she is also influenced by the visuals of film producer, director,
writer and artist, Tim Burton. Currently Emili is sourcing opportunities to compose for film. Be captivated by Emili’s creativity and musicality as she plays original piano compositions from her Vintage Women series – slightly quirky and sonically classical. In 2011, Chocolate Starfish announced they were reforming to continue performing together and work on new studio material. These plans suffered a devastating setback when on March 31 of this year, their guitarist Zoran Romich died of cancer. “It really was a terrible blow, heartbreaking for all of us,” Adam said. Guitarist Tim Henwood of The Androids and Superjesus fame stepped into the breach. “People will probably know Tim by his song ‘Do It With Madonna’,” Adam said. “He has just been a terrific asset. And now, after the reforming of his hit ‘90s band, he will be touring with the popular Red Hot Summer Tour concert series. “It has been a good 12 years since we have all performed to a big audience so it will be quite nerve wracking,” Adam told the Yarrawonga Chronicle. “But we are a really entertaining band with lots of audience participation so we are expecting to put on a good show.” Their first success was with a cover of Carly Simon's Chocolate Starfish.

5 GOODTIMES Lake Mulwala & Rich pickings at the The Murray River Yamaha Cod Classic 1st - 2nd Dec 2012 YARRAWONGA CHRONICLE/COROWA FREE PRESS - NOV/DEC 2012 - ISSUE 36
Australia’s richest freshwater fishing tournament and the most eagerly anticipated fishing social event of the year, the 2012 Yamaha Cod Classic and Wilson Slick Back Lure’s Junior Cod Classic is drawing near.
D
ecember 1st and 2nd will see Lake Mulwala come alive with an expected 3000 plus anglers of all ages and 1400 boats. Entering its 13th year, the Cod Classic continues to offer an amazing prize pool totalling in excess of $125,000 including seven boating packages. All the normal features remain including Flathead Fred, ‘Cod Talk’ with Rod McKenzie and Gus Storer, casting compe-
titions and the Fishing & Outdoors Expo. You would be crazy to miss this great weekend in Yarrawonga / Mulwala and the chance to “catch a legend” on the twin towns’ famous Cod fishing lake. Fishing hours are 6.30am to 6.30pm Saturday, December 1 and 6.30am to 10.30am Sunday, December 2. Fishing on Lake Mulwala must take place between the junction of the Murray and Ovens Rivers at Bundalong down to 200m from the Yarrawonga Weir. On the Murray River from 200m below the weir wall to Bruces Beach N02 (approx. 12km downstream). Refer to maps for these locations. The Cod Classic is a total catch and release event for Murray Cod and Golden Perch. Entry is $90 for adults and $40 for juniors (15 and under) and includes four meals and automatic entry into hundreds of lucky door prizes including the chance to win boats, outboards and much more. For all enquiries call Tony on 0357 441667 or drop into Lake Mulwala Fish Camp and Ski, the official Cod Classic store with the largest range of Cod specific gear in the country.
David Landmeter holds his 64cm Cod in last year’s event.
History in the making
Andrew Junker (Werribee) was one of the lucky winners of a boat last year.
The Cod Classic is organised and run entirely by a dedicated and loyal band of volunteers from the Mulwala Football Netball Club. The competition raises funds to help keep the club afloat and maintain and redevelop the multi-purpose community centre based at Lonsdale Reserve. The idea of running a fishing competition for the club was first conceived by club president Brian McKee in early 2000. Almost overnight the club was up and running and “The Big Catch” was born. This event was held for the first time in late February 2000 attracting only 44 competitors. From that day on the direction of the competition and the date of the event has changed to make it into what it is today, the Cod Classic Australia’s richest freshwater fishing event. Unofficially, the congregation of trailerable boats at the Cod Classic is a world record of the largest amount of fishing boats ever assembled at the one point at the same time. This is an amazing sight to see but surprisingly there is still plenty of room to fish on the lake and river. Apart from being a major fundraiser for the club, proceeds of the competition are also donated back into the local community. Groups to have benefited in the past have been Mulwala and Yarrawonga Primary Schools, Yarrawonga SES and Mulwala and Yarrawonga Fire Brigades. The committee of the Cod Classic strives to make this the best fishing event on the calendar and guarantee anybody who makes the trip to Yarrawonga/Mulwala for the competition will not go home disappointed. YARRAWONGA CHRONICLE/COROWA FREE PRESS - NOVEMBER-DECEMBER 2012 - ISSUE 36
Australia’s mighty Murray Cod O
f all of Australia’s freshwater fish the Murray Cod remains one of the most challenging. From the time of the early European settlers who came across these inland monsters the Murray Cod’s legend grew. Murray Cod are the largest freshwater fish in Australia and one of the largest in the world, the record Murray Cod recorded was over 1.8 metres (6ft) and weighed approximately 113 kilograms (250lb). Murray cod populations have declined severely since European colonisation of Australia due to a number of causes including severe overfishing including large commercial operations, the introduction of European Carp, river regulation and habitat degradation and are now a listed threatened species. Strict fishing regulations including bag limits, closed seasons and a greater emphasis on catch and release by anglers have seen their numbers remain steady in recent years which augurs well for future generations yet to experience these mighty predators. Lake Mulwala is recognised as one of the best locations to catch a Murray Cod and from December 1 at the opening of the season, now even more famous since the launch of the Cod Classic fishing competition, then until August 31 when the season closes there is a steady stream of anglers testing their skills from the bank or in a tinny. Hopeful they too can have their picture taken with a mighty Murray Cod.
Although bank fishing is quite possible and rewarding, the best fishing is from a boat, which enables access to midwater snags and the use of trolled lures which are very successful in taking Murray cod and golden perch. Fish present in the river are Murray cod, golden perch, trout cod, silver perch, freshwater catfish, bony bream, blackfish, carp, redfin, goldfish, western carp gudgeon, flat-headed gudgeon, Australian smelt, southern
pygmy perch, Murray hardyhead, oriental weatherloach and mosquitofish. Three species of freshwater shrimp are present as well as yabbies. For the best result anglers are advised to obtain detailed information from local fishing and bait shops, most who have dedicated their lives to learning about the elusive Murray Cod, where they can be found and what bait or lure will make them bite.
Ian ‘Painter’ Rogers from Corowa with a 93cm Cod.
Common Name: Murray cod Scientific Name: Maccullochella peelii Legal size: Minimum 60cm Bag/possession limit: 2 per day, 4 in possession, only 1 over 100cm Closed season: September 1 November 30 inclusive.
Fishing the Murray River The Murray River is all New South Wales water and NSW regulations apply. A NSW fishing licence is required when fishing in the river, even if the angler is standing on the Victorian bank. A Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence is not valid for angling in the Murray River with the exception of Lake Hume. The water level of the Murray River is controlled by releases from Lake Hume and the numerous dams and weirs downstream. Fishing is greatly influenced by the resulting fluctuations in flow and changes in water level.

Ryan Gray from Eltham holds the record for the biggest cod caught by his family after hooking a giant 48lb monster at the annual Cod Classic. Ryan caught the cod at Bundalong using a Bardi Grub for bait. It was a tagged fish and the anglers recorded the details and forwarded them to the fisheries department. They released the fish straight after the photo was taken.
