Horse whisperer's exclusive visit to Finley

By Marissa Daly Southern Riverina News The Finley Regional Christian Men's Fellowship has secured the talents of America's Horse Whisperer, Dr Lew Sterrett and wife Dr Melodie Sterrett, from June 18 to 20.

he couple, who are widely known internationally as horse trainers and speakers, are making the trip Down Under for the sole purpose of visiting Finley, before flying home. Dr Lew has enjoyed countless opportunities to train and show horses and earn national recognition sharing his message with thousands of people each year both in the United States and abroad. He has had more than 40 years experience in professional horse training, showing and teaching, more than 30 years experience in consulting and more than 25 years in leadership training, youth, family and

marriage counselling and nation wide speaking. Dr Lew combines his impressive horsemanship skills and aptitude for public speaking to create Sermon on the Mount, a presentation not only about the language of the horse, but how it relates to everyday life, leadership, relationship principles, marriage and family. His equally inspiring wife Dr Melodie is also an acclaimed public speaker in areas of family and the many challenges of parenting. She has been actively involved in starting up and running two ranch-style summer camps and working hard to meet the physical and spiritual needs of large groups of all ages. Dr Melodie is a trained nurse, has a Masters Degree in Ministry and a PhD in Counselling. However, she says much of what she learned about parenting comes from her experiences with the couple's two special-needs adopted sons. She is also an author of two books, a counsellor and college teacher, and is described as a down to earth, no nonsense speaker who can relate to real people and real problems.

Event organiser John Everingham from the Finley Regional Christian Men's Fellowship said he has already had calls from King Island and Western Australia from people intending to make the journey to town for the weekend. The group expects a significant amount of interest from within the horse riding community, the Christian community, families and individuals in the region. The couple's time in Finley starts on Saturday, June 18 with an exciting session of Horse Whispering. The weekend also includes a Women's Monster Meeting and light dinner at the Finley School of Arts, as well as a Blokes Barbecue and presentation from Dr Lew. The region is also invited to an interdenominational church service at the Finley High School auditorium. What makes this unusual event so unique is that the Horse Whisperer has chosen Finley as his one and only stop in Australia. American horse whisperer Dr Lew Sterrett and wife For more information contact John Dr Melodie Sterrett will make a one-off presentation in Everingham on 5883 0239. Finley from June 18-20.

Olive oil loaded Dirty Deeds at with goodness the Ski Club T D

he team at Rich Glen are in the middle of harvest at the moment. They harvest the olives with mechanical shakers and the fruit is cold pressed within a couple of hours at their state of the art processing facility which is built smack dab in the middle of the grove. Olives are just like oranges and apples, the juice comes from the fruit, so the sooner the oil is extracted from the olives the better. Precision timing of harvest results in extra virgin olive oil, with high oleic acidity which is most beneficial in helping to lower blood pressure and cholesterol, assists with arthritis and your immune system and is extremely high in vitamin A, D, E and K and valuable antioxidants. One tablespoon a day is recommended for good health, so try a drizzle on your toast in the morning with fresh tomato and cracked pepper. Rich Glen's mandarin or lemon and lime evoo is lovely drizzled on raisin toast and just a splash on your salad, risotto, casserole, pasta or in a salad roll will give you your daily requirements and added flavour. Enjoy! In the meantime you can enjoy their olives, oils, salad dressings, jams, dukkahs, and olive oil skin care range at their little olive shop, just 7km west of Yarrawonga on the Murray Valley Highway.

Entertainment for all ages at Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre From little ones to grandparents, there is something to entertain everyone at the Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre.

2010 Visual Art Exhibition opening.

The annual Chiltern Visual Art Exhibition will celebrate ten years in its current format this June. Opening on Friday, June 10 at 7pm in the Chiltern Memorial Hall, this year’s exhibition promises an eclectic collection of art, sculpture and photography from across Australia.

S

ince its opening, the staff at the Performing Arts Centre have endeavoured to include plenty of family friendly entertainment in their program to help local families enjoy the varied world of theatre, dance and other cultural entertainment. Many young musicians, dancers and actors have also been able to enjoy the centre’s facilities for themselves by performing on stage during community theatre productions, eisteddfods and concerts. There are several child-friendly productions coming to the stage at the Performing Arts Centre this year. One of these is The Gruffalo’s Child, being performed on Friday, July 15. A sequel to the wildly popular production of The Gruffalo, which was a hit with local youngsters last year, The Gruffalo’s Child tells the story of what happens when the Gruffalo’s child defies her father’s warning and sets out to explore the “deep dark woods” near her home. The Gruffalo's Child brings together physical theatre, music and beautiful puppetry to deliver songs, laughs and scary fun for children aged four and up, and their adults. Also scheduled to be performed at the WPAC this year is the rollicking musical play My Grandma Lived in Gooligulch, which is based on the much loved children’s book by Graeme Base. Nine year old Kate is surrounded by talking animals and magical bushland fun when she

Chiltern Celebrates a decade of art

visits her grandmother in the country. This play is scheduled to be performed on Wednesday, September 7 and Thursday, September 8 2011. Tickets for both productions are at an affordable $15 each, or family groups of two adults and two children can attend for the value for money price of $45. Secondary school age children and drama students are also catered for in this year’s theatre season with two separate Shakespeare plays to be performed. First comes a Bell Shakespeare production of Julius Caesar scheduled for Wednesday, July 20. There will be a special schools performance at 11am as well as an evening performance at 7:30pm.A whimsical interpretation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream presented by Arts Radar and BOB Presents will be performed on Saturday, September 3 at 7:30pm. For more information on these productions or other productions scheduled at the WPAC, look on the internet site at www. wangarattapac.com.au or call the Box Office on (03)5722 8105.

E

xhibition Coordinator Meaghan Louise Aitchison said organisers of this year’s exhibition are more than pleased with the number and quality of entries this year. “Our judges will have a hard time choosing our award winners this year, the photography section in particular,” Meaghan said. “Each year it just seems to get better and better. 2010 saw some 300 artworks on display, and organisers are anticipating even more for 2011.” With $2000 in prize money to be awarded and the

growing profiles of some of its past award winners, it is little wonder this event is so popular. One example is photographer and film maker Andrew Pearce. This talented 20 year old was awarded the exhibition's inaugural Indigo Award for young Emerging Artists in 2009 and has since gone on to both national and international success. He has since been a recipient of the Susan Moorehead award and his photography is currently on display at Albury Art gallery. But you do not have to be a professional artist to exhibit in the exhibition. “That’s the beauty of community exhibitions such as this one,” Meaghan Louise said. “It gives everyone the opportunity to show off their talents with equal standing. We have works from all levels of experience. From award winning visual artists, novice photographers, hobby painters right through to young talent. All work gets hung and assessed by our judges, so everyone has the chance to win, no matter what their level of expertise.” The exhibition is then open to the public 10am – 4pm Saturday, June 11 to Tuesday, June 14. Entry is $4 adults and $2 pensioners and students. All artworks on display will be available for sale. The Official Opening is at 7pm Friday, June 10 at the Memorial Hall, Conness Street Chiltern with the winners in each category to be announced at approximately 8pm.Tickets for the opening are $10 each and will be available at the door. For further information on this or any other event in the Chiltern district, please call the Chiltern Visitor Information Centre weekdays or weekends between 10 and 4pm on 03 57261611.

Stars come out to entertain at Howlong On Sunday, June 19 a unique evening of Irish music and mirth will be held at Howlong Country Golf Club on when two legends of entertainment, Finbar Furey and Brendan Grace, perform live at 7.30pm.

In more recent times Brendan has managed to attract a younger audience mainly because the content of his show is very 'Family' and also because of his hilarious appearance in Father Ted when he played the part of a drinking, smoking, troublemaker extraordinaire Father Fintan Stack. Entry is $35, no concessions and a fraction of the cost to see these two entertainers elsewhere. For bookings phone 02 60265321 or visit wwwhowlonggolf.com.au.
