Canoe Club pushes for Lifesaving Club
The Yarrawonga Mulwala Amateur Canoe Club is pushing to have a Life Saving Club here in Yarrawonga on Lake Mulwala and the Murray River. This issue was raised during the organisation for the upcoming Murray QUAD which involves a swim on Lake Mulwala. Tim Roadley from the Canoe Club said as the club had no experience with hosting a swimming race and could not find any other local group to help they approached the Edithvale Surf Living Club to help. “The requirement to run such an event involved equipment and expertise from the state officer of Life Saving Victoria.
This made us look into the possibility of setting up a Life Saving Club here in Yarrawonga and also in Cobram,” he said. “At the same time Moira Shire and the YMCA were also looking into whether there were any interested people in the community in regards to a life saving club. The Canoe Club attend a Life Saving Victoria information session Moira Shire had organised and since then we have had talks with the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club about our paddlers joining their club and becoming members of their kayak team so they can compete in surf competitions. We have also organised an opportunity for students
15 -18 years old to attend a Bronze Medallion course run by the Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club on December 16-21. Anglesea is one of the largest Surf Life Saving clubs in the state and has up to 120 people doing this December course; they have also offered us a scholarship program to help reduce the cost of the course.” Mr Roadley said with the help of the community, Moira Shire and Anglesea Life Saving Club they hope one day to have a club in Yarrawonga. “In the mean time we plan to have a sister relationship with Anglesea where young people can be members of Anglesea and benefit from
being member of Life Saving Victoria, whether that be sport, education, training and of course saving lives on our waters,” he said. For Yarrawonga to have its own Life Saving Club Mr Roadley said community support is vital as to start a club 20 members are required with a minimum of a bronze medallion. “This is just the start of the training that Life Saving Victoria offers, members can go onto an IRB course, first aid, instructors, gold medallion and life guards,” he said. For more information on the Canoe Club or joining a Lifesaving Club contact Tim Roadley on 0417373376.
