THE BULLS EYE... The floods of North East Victoria put a stop to play for a week but when it was cancelled for a second week the players of Yarrawonga demanded play of some kind, so a drawn doubles comp was put on up at the clubhouse.

Around 30 players turned up to test their luck, see what partner they drew and then put their skills to the test, $5 per double gave desire and made it more interesting. Justin Bakkum and Allyce Bausch met Ray Lindsay in the final with the first team mentioned taking the honours which they have done before in the past. Dean Leonard and Pat Bausch were unlucky not to get there but they still won their board in the round robin format. 180s – Mick Brownlie, Dean Leonard, J. Bakkum and Ray Lindsay (3).

The handicap round was introduced mid-season as a social round to bring players of differing grades up against each other. The more experi- Super League Super League is now in enced players passed on

its second week and has given new players the chance to go up against some better players in higher grades under a handicap system. Teams of 3 players (one from each A, B or B res grade) are going head to head in a best of 3 singles format. A grade starts off 501, B off 401 and C off 301. Most of the time players will get to the pegging around the same time so the game is anyone’s. Keep winning every week your starting score goes up. Some A grade players will be close to starting off 601 next week. John (Scotchy) Walker, Keith Watts, Arron Robinson, Torin Helmore lead the ton tally with Justin Burns, Trent Wood and Dennis Ebbels not far behind. Highest peg so far goes to Shane Rosenow with a 106 and Gary Bausch has most game wins with 5 out of 6. The association would like give a shout out to Jan Rodwell who found herself in hospital last week. Hope all is well Jan and you’re back at the oche singing us a tune before we know it.

Season 2012 is just weeks away and what a big off season the Pigeons have had in 2011/2012. Again what a great effort by the member and players of the club who donated their time to help fill sandbags and assist with the flood emergency which struck the region. Everyone is extremely proud of your efforts and organizers wished to pass on their thanks. The YFNC held their AGM at the J C Lowe Oval on Sunday and all in attendance were able to ask questions and received plenty of information about the upcoming season. It is now time for everyone to stand up and be counted and put your hands up to support the club, and that means the townspeople and busi-

nesses. The old saying “many hands make light work” – don’t wait to be asked, be proactive and get on board what promises to be another successful season for the Pigeons. Also congratulations go to the Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club on making the final of the Wangaratta and District Cricket Association. With Pigeons Development Officer Lee Fraser as the High Performance Manager for the Cricket Club, I am sure the Lakers will put on a show. Also, well done to the C Grade Team on making the final. Be loud and proud – support Yarrawonga in the cricket next week. The A Grade Final will be played against City Colts at the Wangaratta Showground/Norm Minns Oval. Be there! The Pigeons first prac-

Wilby Park motorsports results David Hastings worked hard to gain pole position for the start of the Ovens and Murray ‘B’ class feature race. But lining up against Richard Hay in his XD Falcon, proved difficult as Richard had the lead through the first corner. But David took

a little opportunity, and led the race again by the end of the first lap. At race pace David showed the VS Commodore had what it takes to win. Sharon Rigbye gained some late race speed also to challenge Richard in the final laps, but could not

event success

More than 500 competitors competed in another very successful Mulwala Water Ski Club Splash‘n’Dash over the weekend. Competitors had the option to compete in one or both events including the 1.4km State to State Swim and the Foreshore Fun Run over 1km, 3km, 5km and 10km.

Foreshore Fun Run popular A superb day greeted over 400 runners taking on the picturesque Yarrawonga Foreshore Fun Run with some competitors backing up after the swim the day before. It was déjà vu among the winners with Jarrod Mullavey of Melbourne again taking out the 10km event in 35 minutes and 44 seconds beating his 2011 time by just 20 seconds. Stephanie Elliott, a 15 year old student from Sacred Heart, was again the first female over the line in the 10km event in a time of 43 minutes and 21 seconds.

Another rising local star is junior runner Tyler O’Brien of Yarrawonga who finished the 5km in a sizzling time of 18 minutes and 31 seconds. Tyler battled it out again with another talented local, Luke Doyle, to win by just 12 seconds. Last year the boys were also close together in the same race and finished same order with just 15 seconds separating them. The overall winner of the 5km race was Heath Mullavey of Melbourne in a time of 18 minutes and 2 seconds. Local runner Abbey Hammond was the first 5km female competitor

to cross the line in a swift time of 20 minutes and 20 seconds. Another highlight of the day was the start of the primary school event where eager students displayed some real talent in finishing the 1km and 3km distances. First Local over the, line in the 5km run was Kevin Rock Splash ‘n’ Dash committee member Lynda White paid special thanks to Sacred Heart Parents and Friends, volunteers, local businesses and major sponsors Mulwala Water Ski Club, Thales, Yarrawonga Mulwala Tourism and the Yar-

rawonga Chronicle for their support. “We are getting smarter on how we handle the event as it grows in popularity,” Lynda said. “I would like to thank the volunteers, Friends In Common, the local SES, police, Men’s Shed and CFA who provided assistance during the day. “Many local organisations benefit from the event with a healthy number of competitors coming from areas both in NSW and throughout Victoria.”

minutes and 37 seconds. Jason was almost two minutes in front of the second fastest swimmer, 48 year old Bill Lineham of Cheltenham. His time was the second fastest recorded for the event which has now been running three years. The record is still held by Jason Featonby who recorded a time of 19 minutes and 17 seconds in 2010. Last year’s overall winner, 18 year-old Hannah Hobson of Wagga Wagga, was the first female over

the line in a time of 21 minutes and 57 seconds. Her time was 49 seconds short of her overall winning time last year. The first local to cross the line was Kevin Rock in a time of 26 minutes and 20 seconds just in front of Open and Local Female winner Georgina Brennan. Committee organiser Darren Forrester said swimmers were again full of praise for the event. “We again had a number of competitors who came from out of

town and they were all very positive and full of praise for the course, the organisation of the event and the facilities at the Ski Club. “We would like to thank all the volunteers who gave up their time to assist in the event and the assistance from the local canoe club members, the assistance from Action Bike and Ski, SES and NSW Maritime,” Darren said.

State to State swim a success

Despite all the recent rain and floods almost 100 swimmers took on the 1.4km challenge across the state border on Lake Mulwala from the Yarrawonga Foreshore (next to the Skate Park) to the Mulwala Water Ski Club Lagoon. In what was a warm water temperature of 24 degrees, sixteen year-old Jason Forbes of Melton recorded the fastest time overall with a brilliant swim in a time of 19

Back to back 1.4km swim overall women’s winner 18 year-old Hannah Hobson of Wagga Wagga crosses the finish.
