Moira Shire Council voted to adopt a new fee structure for the registration of caravan parks within Moira Shire at the February council meeting. Director Sustainability Development Kaye Thomson said the new fee structure comes as a result of new regulations to the Residential Tenancies Act which came into operation on June 27, 2010. Over 60,000 households across seven council areas will receive new waste information as part of the initiative being delivered by Transpacific Cleanaway Wodonga, Halve Waste and NevRwaste on behalf of local councils in North East Victoria and Southern NSW. Waste audits show that over 20% of the weight of household garbage bins could be recycled. Education Officer for Transpacific Cleanaway in Wodonga Karen Retra said she was enthusiastic about the delivery of the new information for residents. “In our area the average household creates
approximately 300kgs of waste per year,” she said. “The more we can encourage people to recycle, the less of this we send to landfill. That not only helps the environment but also turns that so-called waste into a new resource.” Although the messages within the information packs are the same for each of the council areas, the pack contents and delivery methods will vary. The packs will be delivered by mail to NSW households, including those in Mulwala and Corowa, and hand delivered in Victoria. The hand delivered information packs will include the application of a new recycle bin sticker for residents in Indigo Shire Council, City of Wodonga, Towong Shire and Rural City of Wangaratta. The project will be rolled out in phases to allow for the effectiveness
of the packs to be evaluated. Indigo Shire Council, Corowa Shire and the Rural City of Wangaratta will be the first areas to receive their information in March with other areas to follow in July. Indigo Shire and the Rural City of Wangaratta residents are asked to ensure that their recycling bin is out for collection on their normal collection day so that the team re-stickering the bins can do this easily. Due to advances in technologies more materials can be recycled in our household collections than ever before. The packs are designed to help residents keep up-to-date with these developments. As part of the program research is being conducted into the effectiveness of these educational materials. Residents are encouraged to keep an eye out for the online survey which asks for
honest feedback. As an incentive to complete the survey, respondents will have the chance to win a weekend away at a luxury eco-friendly resort in Bright. “We live in such a beautiful part of the world and we all need to work towards protecting and conserving our region’s natural environment, by taking some simple measures about thinking about the amount of waste we generate, trying to reduce that and recycle what we can we are all taking positive steps to reduce our impact on the environment,” said Regional Education Officer at NevRwaste Kim Mueller. Anyone with questions about the program, or who is concerned they have missed out on their household waste information pack should contact their local council for further details.
