Keith Bellis 90th birthday Woodlands bird With an enjoyable balance of wit, wisdom and gratitude, many family and friends gathered with Keith Bellis to celebrate his 90th birthday recently.

Born on his father’s birthday, Keith has seen many highs and lows during his lifetime. These were displayed on a photoboard in the function room at the Cohuna Retirement Village, where Keith now resides. His daughter and grand-daughter drew upon his years of postal service to design the invitation and birthday cake. Keith’s three surviving siblings travelled long distances to attend, as did other relations and friends, some even from Adelaide. His three children, the eldest being Ann Sloane from Savernake, hosted the afternoon, which included an entertaining trivia quiz instead of a more formal speech. This was followed by the presentation

of certificates from Government representatives such as the Prime Minister and local MPs, from federal, state and local government levels. Keith also received a certificate acknowledging his efforts in WW2, which included the original trek along the Kokoda Track. Two of Keith’s mates from the 39th Battalion also attended, which was very special – these three men represent 5% of all remaining 39th veterans. A note of sadness was felt by many present, as Keith’s wife of 59 years, Vola, has recently passed away and was buried in Yarrawonga Cemetery. Keith responded to the family tributes with much emotion and also humour, his wit and ability with one-liners not diminishing with the years! His family still retains strong links with Yarrawonga, their forebears having farmed at South Yarrawonga, and sister Dorothy Robinson and brother Peter Bellis living locally. Keith with his War effort certificate.

guide launch A spectacular new field guide highlighting woodland birds of north east Victoria will be launched at a community field day to be held at Thoona on Friday, October 7. The field day will feature practical ways for landholders to protect and enhance native vegetation and wildlife habitat on their farms.

“It’s a must attend event for landholders, land managers and natural resource practitioners in north east Victoria,” Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE), Senior Biodiversity Officer, Matt Looby, said.
“Expert guest speakers and researchers will discuss and demonstrate the latest in managing native bushland, revegetation, restoration, pest control, native pastures, cultural heritage and attracting and managing wildlife on your property.”

The launch of the field guide by Birds Australia’s National Regent Honeyeater Team Coordinator and Woodland Birds for Biodiversity Officer, Dean Ingwersen, will be a highlight of the day.

DSE Senior Biodiversity Officer, Glen Johnson, said the glossy foldout guide features spectacular photos of more than 60 woodland bird species.

“It highlights threatened and more common species, but also showcases a large suite classified as ‘declining’ and importantly provide tips on

how landholders and community groups can help to restore habitat for these species,” Mr Johnson said.

“We hope it will become an essential field identification guide for landholders, bushwalkers and bird observers throughout the north east. And best of all, it’s free.”

The Woodlands Birds of North East Victoria brochure is a joint initiative between DSE, Foundation for Conservation for National Parks and Wildlife, and Birds Australia.

The field day commences at 9.30am for 10am start and will feature attendees rotating through four field based presentations covering managing natural recovery, revegetation techniques, managing for wildlife and wild plants, and understanding and managing cultural heritage. It is expected to finish at 3pm.

A gold coin entry donation to the Thoona Country Fire Authority (CFA) will apply and lunch and refreshments will also be supplied.

All landholders and community members across the north east and Goulburn Broken catchments are invited to attend. To register for the field day contact DSE Benalla on (03) 5761 611. Bookings are essential for catering purposes.
The brochure will be available at Wodonga, Wangaratta and Benalla DSE and CMA offices following the launch.
