For a pair of plucky plovers nesting in Yarrawonga, rather than choosing to establish a traditional mound-type nest on the ground they took a liking to the roof of an Acacia Street shed. A keen-eyed passerby noticed the female plover resting happily on her rooftop nest while her wary mate kept a lookout and contacted the Yarrawonga Chronicle. Plovers are traditionally a ground-nesting bird and according to some information will return to the same nesting site year after year if possible. They are found throughout Australia and generally occupy habitats near water. In urban areas plovers have been known to nest on roadsides, sporting fields, parks, airstrips, golf courses or anywhere they can find some greenery and water. Whatever the location choice plovers generally prefer to stick to ground nesting.

However, this pair has made a slightly unusual choice but possibly for a good reason according to Yarrawonga wildlife rescuer Loretta Saunders. “Plovers will choose to nest off the ground from time to time and I would guess that the reason this pair have chosen to do so is because we have had so much rain recently,” Loretta said. “Over the

past few weeks a lot of animals and birds have been forced out of their natural habitats because of the rain and flooding. This can cause disorientation, cause wildlife to wander into town and in the case of these plovers, choose an unusual nesting site.” Loretta said plovers, like magpies, were renowned swooping birds

and would go to great lengths to protect their nest. “Plovers will swoop while they are nesting but as with magpies they are only trying to protect their territory,” she said. “I know it can be hard to deal with swooping birds this time of year but it’s only for a short time, maybe two to three months, and the birds are

only doing what comes naturally.” Plovers eggs incubate for around 28 to 30 days and the young leave the nest almost immediately after hatching. The young are then guarded by both parents while they are small and many plover families stay together after the young can fly. Plovers swoop to defend the eggs or defend their young from predators such as foxes, humans and dogs and have been known to unleash a loud, penetrating call when threatened. Loretta had some advice from people trying to deal with swooping birds in their backyard. “Feed them,” she said. “If you put some food out for them they will quickly learn that you are not to be feared and they literally won’t bite the hand that feeds them. If they learn to trust you they won’t swoop you so put out a little bit of meat on a tree limb and make friends with them. They are our native wildlife and we need to do what we can to protect them.”
