All Catholic schools across the Sandhurst Diocese took positive action against global warming recently by switching off school lights and heaters for a full day. During Catholic Education Week schools joined together in a combined effort to raise awareness about the effects of greenhouse gas emissions and to demonstrate how schools, homes and businesses can reduce their impact on the environment. Sustainability Victoria estimates this event will save 15.3 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions which is equivalent to 306,000 black balloons of green house gas. Students at Sacred Heart College worked without the lights and didn’t turn on their heaters on Friday, May 20. Students were also encouraged to dress in black as a sign of their commitment to ‘Sandhurst Switches Off’ and taking this positive action against global warming. Students from Grades 3 and 4 came to school dressed in black as part of their support for ‘Sandhurst Switches Off’.

former gun club site, which were identified as having “a significant amount of lead shot”, to be treated with a lead recycling sieve machine. The machine would remove the lead from the topmost 100mm of soil and have it taken away for recycling. However further testing revealed the lead shot problem to be much greater than initially identified. It was revealed lead shot was not only visible on the surface of the Western section of Stan Hargreaves Oval but was also found at many areas across the oval to a depth of around 500mm. Rather than attempting to sieve enough soil to address the oval problem consultants Golder Associates recommended that a more economical and effective method would be to ‘cap off’ the surface of the oval. This required the removal of the grass from the oval surface, installing a “marker layer” of brightly coloured plastic and providing a new surface to the entire area of the oval. Moira Shire Council approved the necessary works and resolved to spend $730,000 to remove lead and restore facilities at Victoria Park. The lead removal aspect of the work has now been completed with around 25 million lead shots removed from the site and recycled. Cr Brian Keenan said the final stages of the Stan Hargreaves Oval upgrade, including the installation of a turf wicket and perimeter fencing, were now underway. The wicket installation will continue in coming weeks, weather permitting, and the perimeter fence will be erected once the oval’s surface is further established. “This is a major redevelopment with wide ranging benefits for user groups and the greater Yarrawonga region,” Cr Keenan said. “Moira Shire Council would like to thank user groups for their patience. Continued wet weather has resulted in a number of delays and we acknowledge the inconvenience this has caused user groups. Once completed the Stan Hargreaves Oval will provide a premium playing field and complement other facilities within Victoria Park.” The next stage of the Victoria Park work will see the capping and landscaping of earth mounds located around the oval and adjacent to the southern boundary of the site. “The netball courts will be officially opened in June with the opening to coincide with the WM Loud Association Championships,” Cr Keenan said.
